US Online Casinos And Trends In 2022 – VideoInk
Posted: September 7, 2022 at 5:43 pm
As there have been steps toward technological advantages, there are many trends revolving around each industry. The same is the case for the gambling industry, which is subject to numerous transformations. The gaming industry has been mushrooming for a decade, and the 21st century has been more than advantageous.
The modern tinge is coping with the changes and the trends along with technology. For example, the use of digital solutions has been a widening concept. Also, the different games welcome players of all ages, platforms, and countries to try their hand at different games.
As per the forecasts, even though the world was dealing with the growing pandemic in 2020, the casino industrys revenue rose and reached a market value of $227 billion. That precisely shows the craze of casinos. And for obvious reasons, it is here to stay.
So, if you plan to take steps into the casino world, here are some trends you need to know.
It turns out that their minds help you take a comfortable path that makes you win big.

Cryptocurrency has been making rounds now and then. It has also entered the gambling world and will continue to dominate the industry for some time. Also, there has been a rise in online platforms that have started to accept this form of payment. Many players worldwide are referring to the use of this currency in the form of withdrawals and deposits.
There are other currencies, too, that are propelling in the market. Using such a format helps in maintaining security and anonymity in the transactions that happen at the global level. However, if you dont want to switch to crypto, you should know that some of the best US online casinos, like the ones listed on CasinoUSA.com offer the traditional ways of betting and winning.
Many players might think that crypto has been an introduction of anonymity to the casino world and might find it untraceable owing to its virtual nature. However, the rising access to gambling games in restricted areas is another trend emerging as an edge for new players.
For example, countries like Taiwan have introduced strict regulations and norms. But, recently, there has been a rise in online gaming sites. If people dont want to be a part of physical trading, they can choose to explore the options at online sites. The online presence and demand will expand in the upcoming years. The rising access is working as an immense opportunity that is tapping the under-served markets.
The past trends highlight that casino games have become more realistic. It adds to the relatability quotient, especially for the Gen Z population that is new to the casino world. The onset of computer technology is magically high, and the game developers have a significant hand to play over here.
Lets take the example of smartphones. They have apps that draw excessive-performance power. So, if you happen to explore the new games that have entered the casino world, you will notice a commendable improvement in the graphics, and they are mobile-friendly, too. Apart from this, computing power is an added advantage to casino game developers. They have the benefit of targeting modern networks. 5G technology is a relevant example of the same. They can amalgamate both of these to deliver games with proper speed and quality.
This is not the end. There are many other things that you can expect under this head like the following:
Smartwatches have been subject to changes, and avid watch wearers will understand them better than anyone else. Also, the rising competition in brands benefits the consumers in the end. For example, the launch of the Apple Series 7 or the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 is equipped to work with smartphones. The trends that are widening in the US online casinos are proving to help conduct various kinds of tasks. It includes some of the following:
The regional developers are co-relating these with smartwatches that add to the degree of compatibility. It helps bring more innovation and convenience to various users of online casinos in the region.

Another trend that is increasing is the mix of live functions in a casino and the development of VR technology in this field. The rising modernity is revolving quickly and has an added advantage of a good internet connection. Live casinos have live dealers that cover the lag provided by a poor customer experience and physical facility.
The concept of virtual reality is emerging, which is being accepted as a mature technology. There are standalone devices that give a broader look to the current niche. The best example of the same is NerEnt. This is a brainchild of the VR version of the casino games like Jack and Beanstalk.
The pushing trends are extraordinary and have different advantages in the store for players in the US and other regions, too. Also, the broader acceptability of trends makes many events possible in various regions. Therefore, there is a lot of scope for both new and old players of the market that will render an excellent gambling experience.
The unstoppable rise of casino games has become possible because of the trends surfacing in 2022. Thanks to the internet, the 21st century has a plethora of options that they can choose from. Be it the physical casinos or the online ones. There is a lot of ease for the players. With improved technology and expanding scenarios, the concept of gambling is taking a competitive turn and will continue to benefit players from across the globe.

What do you need to have to work in the online sports betting industry? – Onrec
Posted: at 5:43 pm
If the answer is yes, you are most likely interested in working in one of the most interesting online industries in the world. Since websites such as Efirbet provide lists of sportsbooks and betting offers, we can read professional reviews of iGaming operators and learn more about the things they offer. Needless to say, the information found on such sites helps us realize how big is the gambling business and what kinds of things it offers.
To help all new clients who start using their platforms, online gambling operators need new employees. Thats why you can find many jobs about things like croupiers, data analysts, admins, customer support, and so on. Even more impressive is that third-party companies are also working alongside bookies and casinos by offering them different things. Hence, people have access to even more job opportunities.
Unsurprisingly, finding a job in the industry is not that easy, especially for some positions and in some countries. Whats more, not everyone has what it takes to succeed in online betting, so lets go through some of the things you must be prepared for.
The first thing probably applies to pretty much any job out there, but it is very important for some positions in online betting. It probably doesnt come as a surprise that there are usually at least a few open customer support positions whose job is to talk directly with clients and help them resolve their issues.
Being a customer support representative is not that hard, but you need to know the ins and outs of the casino/bookie you represent. Furthermore, you need to be patient because not everyone who uses the site knows as much as you. Hence, you have to be able to explain whats the answer understandably. Sometimes, you may even have to repeat the same response multiple times.
Sadly, not everyone is suitable for the customer support role because some people are just impatient. Hence, they might get annoyed or even become aggressive, which is unacceptable for any role in an online betting website.
It probably doesnt come as a surprise that people who work in online betting have to understand everything about this industry and how it works. Gambling is an interesting business model that can be highly profitable. However, some people are not okay with the fact that they work for a company that wins when others lose. This is more of a moral problem, but it is something that people have to decide whether they are fine with before they start working.
Aside from the moral aspect, every employee must be familiar with the companys rules and how it operates. Although most gambling operators are similar, there are many exceptions because some companies pay more attention to responsible gambling and other options.
Another thing that many future iGaming employees underestimate is that this business changes pretty much every month. Since gambling is heavily regulated in pretty much every country, even the slightest changes to some of the gambling laws have an effect on the industry and every bookie/casino that works in it. As a result, people who are a part of the business need to be able to adapt and change to survive. Sadly, most companies have recruiting challenges because some people cant do that.
Even though this may not seem that hard, some people have a hard time learning to do something new. In fact, many employees out there think there is no need to learn and get better at their job because it wont give them any benefits. As you can imagine, this is wrong because others will eventually replace people who dont get better.
The last thing wed like to include is completely different than the other ones, but since the home office is the new norm, it is important to point it out. Many iGaming jobs can be done from home, so if you want to be a part of them, you need to have a good internet connection.
This may not be a problem for most people reading this, but there are many countries where the internet is just not as good as it should be. Hence, it will affect those who want to be a part of the online betting industry.

Who Loses and How Much With Legalized Sports Gambling in Kansas? – Flatland

With thearrival of legalized sports bettingon Sept. 1, Kansans have a new way to gamble away their money.
A few people will win, most will lose, but the house will always win. Just how much people will lose and at what social cost has those who try to help problem gamblers on edge.
Were worried that the need (for problem gambling counseling) is going to just increase, said Stephenie Roberts, a Wichita social worker and certified gambling counselor.
Roberts is chairman of the South Central Problem Gambling Task Force and one of the people callers to 1-800-522-4700 problem gambling hotline are referred to.
A lot of people who get into serious problems with gambling may develop suicidal thinking, and thats one of the things we try to address too, make sure people have that help they need when theyre in a crisis, Roberts said. Because when you are betting all your money and you suddenly lose it, you get in a very dark place, and having a number you can reach out to to get some help is important.
Roberts and others in her field believe the funding for addressing problem gambling is grossly inadequate. Under current Kansas law, just 2% of tax revenues generated off gambling at casinos, lottery ticket sales and now sportsbooks is allocated to theProblem Gambling and Addictions Grant Fund.
Roberts office gets about $60,000 a year to serve the Wichita metro area and believes that is higher than what the southwest and southeast task forces receive. There was a northeast task force, but Roberts says its no longer active. Efforts to reach the northeasts task force chair, Peter Gusman, were unsuccessful.
Legalized gambling brings major revenue to the state, but the amount allocated to treating problem gambling is minor and completely dwarfed by the broader collateral social costs of gambling addiction.
Kansas is projected to make$185 million in total tax revenue from gaming and the lotteryduring the 2022 fiscal year, but only about$8 millionwill be transferred to the Problem Gambling and Addictions Grant Fund. The fund is projected to have $726,000 on hand at the end of the 2022 fiscal year and another surplus of $532,000 in 2023, according to budget datareported by the Kansas Legislative Research Department.
In 2018, a limited-scope audit report of the Problem Gambling and Addictions Grant Fund found that 32% of the money earmarked by law the previous three years was transferred to other funds that were not used to provide services to individuals with gambling or other addictions. Programs and services for problem gambling within the fund fell 54% because staff positions were left vacant, which made it more difficult to coordinate education and awareness programs which may have led to fewer people seeking treatment.
In 2020, the National Council on Problem Gambling told the Kansas Legislaturethe estimated social cost of Kansas adult problem gamblers is $829 million a year, from gambling-related bankruptcy, divorce, crime and job loss. Using the same methodology, adjusting for inflationand thenew population census, The Beacon found that problem gambling would incur an estimated cost of $1.126 billion for Kansas taxpayers, families and communities in 2022.
The toll of gambling losses is not readily visible. The governor is the first to place a sports wager in Kansas while wearing the sportsbooks jacket with its insignia and smiles for the photo-op. The state distributes photos of lottery winners, not losers. At casinos, slot machines make noise when gamblers hit the jackpot. Silence comes with losing. But the impact of a gambling addiction is in full view of bankruptcy lawyers.
Wichita bankruptcy lawyer David Prelle Eron estimates about every 1 in 100 cases he sees involves a problem gambler.
Weve seen cases where folks get into trouble with credit cards, or they will take out cash advances and things like that, Prelle Eron said. Weve seen cases where people are operating businesses, and the business ends up failing because theyre pulling money out of the business. Not all debtors with gambling problems gamble in casinos, a lot of them are gambling in poker rooms and things that kind of run underneath the radar.
Just how many more people might get referred to Roberts after calling the hotline or might Prelle Eron see filing for bankruptcy now that sports betting is added to the mix? The state doesnt know or doesnt want to know.
In estimates provided to the Kansas Legislature in April, the Kansas Lottery estimated the state would receive from sports betting revenues $1.8 million in 2023, $6 million in 2024 and $10 million in 2025. But lottery officials say those estimates are already off because the legislation changed after they were made, most notably when the tax rate was proposed at 20%instead of the eventually passed 10%. No new projections have been made since.
The2017 Kansas Gambling Survey, which determined that 2.7% of Kansas adults are at high risk for suffering from a gambling disorder, will not be administered this year by the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services (KDADS) per its five-year rolling schedule.
Gambling addictions are not a new problem, a KDADS spokesperson said via email. As it has done for years, the KDADS will continue promoting and delivering recovery resources for anyone who may see themselves or others facing addiction. KDADS also works with casinos to promote responsible gaming.
The survey found that of the high-risk group, 52% have had suicidal thoughts and almost 20% have attempted suicide.
I think its important to know what the prevalence and potential of problem gambling is for our state so we know how we were and how we need to provide help resources and treatment for those that truly experience problems with gambling, said Lisa Chaney, who served as the project lead for the 2017 Kansas Gambling Survey.
More alarmingly, the survey found 42% had never heard of the 1-800-522-4700 gambling helpline but nearly 80% had recalled hearing, reading or watching an advertisement for a casino located in Kansas within the past 12 months of taking the survey.
Casinos and sportsbooks have vastly larger advertising budgets.Ads for sportsbooks alone measure in the hundreds of millions annuallynationwide, showing up on television and social media feeds primarily. The problem gambling hotline, meanwhile, is advertised on the back of city buses one of the lowest-cost advertising avenues available.
We keep trying to advocate for more for problem gambling because with sports betting coming were worried that the need is going to just increase, Roberts said.
The most common resource for problem gamblers is the national gambling hotline 1-800-522-4700, which will connect you to a local call center and be able to answer any questions you may have and refer you to additional resources in your area. Be aware if youre a transplant with a non-Kansas area code phone number, as the call center youre connected to is determined by those three digits. They might not be able to give you the best resources in your area, so make sure to tell them where youre located.
Gamblers Anonymous also has a hotline, 1-855-222-5542, and your phone numbers area code will also determine who youre connected with. Gamblers Anonymous has local meetings in Kansas every week that are accessible by clickinghereand searching your city, state or ZIP code.
Almost every casino in Kansas has a voluntary self-exclusion list, which gamblers can use to ban themselves from a casino. You can sign up by calling one of the numbers below. Every casino has its own procedures regarding its self-exclusion program, but generally, the gambler will be excluded from entering the casino, cashing checks or using a credit card and will be taken off the casinos mailing list. A variety of apps, meanwhile, offer to block a user from accessing online gambling sites.

DraftKings Responsible Gaming Campaign Features Tony Hawk, The Miz – Casino.Org News

Last updated on: September 7, 2022, 01:09h.
Sports betting and iGaming firm DraftKings continues to expand its responsible gaming initiatives. The gaming firms latest campaign coincides with the American Gaming Associations (AGA) inaugural Responsible Gaming Education Month this September.
Titled Practice Safe Bets, the spot is seemingly a play on the practice safe sex motto that ran in the wake of the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s and 90s. DraftKings is employing two celebrity ambassadors to get out the message that gambling responsibly is the cool way to gamble.
Inspired by the 1990s-era The More You Know public service announcements, DraftKings responsible gaming campaign features skateboard legend Tony Hawk and former reality TV star turned WWE wrestler The Miz in retro PSA commercials.
Hawk wears a helmet and kneepads as he discusses deposit and time limits available on the DraftKings app. The Miz, clad in a metallic costume, exudes a cool factor by making the point that its cool to cool off from betting.
Responsible gaming advertising is a tremendous opportunity to reach DraftKings players in a fun and educational way, said Stephanie Sherman, DraftKings chief marketing officer. We chose The Miz and Tony Hawk for the Practice Safe Bets campaign because of their extensive fan bases and because their personalities will break through the noise to reinforce why using responsible gaming tools is so important.
The National Council on Problem Gambling says about 1% of the US adult population has a gambling problem. Another 2%-3% are estimated to meet the criteria for having a mild or moderate gambling disorder.
With more younger people entering the industry through sports betting, the AGA and leading iGaming/online sportsbook operators believe more encouragement of responsible play is needed. For many millennials, their first mobile sports bet is their first encounter with legal gambling.
Betting without a game plan is a little like skating a giant ramp without a helmet or pads, Hawk says before a gray backdrop and a stack of antiquated television sets. DraftKings Sportsbook provides you with tools to set a realistic budget and time limit so youre ready to bet responsibly.
In The Mizs spot, the celebrity oozes a wrestlers persona from the 1990s. The character is seemingly loosely based on Randy Macho Man Savage. Have a realistic budget, and bet within your means, The Miz tells viewers.
Both DraftKings commercials conclude with a parody take on the iconic The More You Know comet trail graphic that instead reads, Practice Safe Bets.
The responsible gaming PSAs follow DraftKings June announcement that it would implement software allowing its customers to schedule cooling-off periods directly through the app.
BetBlocker is a responsible gaming tech firm that provides blocking software free of charge to consumers. BetBlocker can limit access to online gaming websites with a simple click. BetBlocker on DraftKings allows patrons to temporarily disable the iGaming and sports betting app for a period that the user determines.
The responsible gaming initiatives are part of the DraftKings S.E.R.V.E.S. corporate social program, which stands for Service, Equity, Responsible Gaming, Vitality, Entrepreneurship, and Sports.

Finland’s Gambling Operator Veikkaus Ready to Give Up Monopoly Gambling Industry News – Gambling Industry News
Posted: at 5:43 pm
State-owned gambling company Veikkaus has stated in its interim report that it is ready to give up its monopoly position in Finland in the hopes that the government will open the market to privately-owned betting companies.
In an interview with Ylen Ykksaamu on Wednesday, Veikkaus deputy CEO Velipekka Nummikoski pointed out that gambling regulation in Finland only applies to Veikkaus while foreign gambling companies are allowed to operate with no apparent oversight.
Our competitors do not operate under Finnish regulations and their license would change. Then everyone would work with the same rules of the game.
Nummikoski said that it is important that the market is competitive but that all operators are also on an equal footing. Currently, foreign iGaming companies pay no taxes to Finland and have no obligation to comply with Finnish gambling regulations.
Finlands online gambling market was worth around 520 million in the first six months of 2022 whiole Veikkaus share of this figure was reported to be 260 million. According to Veikkaus interim report, 50% of all money wagered online in Finland goes directly to foreign companies that are unregulated by the Finnish government.
Nummikoski added:
In Finland, we formally have an exclusive rights system, but if we look at digital gaming, Veikkaus market share is only half. You can already ask if we really have an exclusive system anymore.
He then cited Swedens example of a licensed market before explaining:
Channelization has reached 90 percent there, which was the goal of the system. And that is the most significant measure of whether the system has been successful or not. It is not worth creating such a license system, which is not capable of channeling gaming into itself. The regulation must be drawn up to its level.
Nummikoski believes that Finland would be an attractive option for foreign gambling companies if the market were opened and a license system was introduced.
The fact that we are currently offering games to Finnish customers shows that we are an attractive market. We would certainly get a significant number of good operators to Finland.

Back-to-the-office moves leave tech uneasy – Axios
Posted: at 5:42 pm
A lot of CEOs are itching to get workers back to the office, but tech CEOs who want that face an extra uphill battle: After all, theirs is the industry that made remote work possible.
Why it matters: The tech industry was built on "dogfooding" the idea that companies should use the products they push on the public and every effort by a tech leader to hound reluctant employees back to the office park seems to betray that ideal.
Driving the news: This week Apple, tech's most valuable company, began requiring its workers to report to the office at least three days a week.
Apple CEO Tim Cook has walked a careful line between acknowledging the appeal of remote work but praising in-person "serendipity" and "collaboration" and making clear that he and Apple would really like to see more of the troops at the company's $5 billion, beached-flying-saucer headquarters.
The big picture: Apple's stance is unusually uncompromising among tech's giants.
Between the lines: In tech, every fight boils down to numbers. But arguments over the relative levels of productivity workers can achieve remotely vs. in-office are tough to resolve with data.
Inevitably, managers who favor in-office work rely less on statistics and more on invocation of culture and creativity.
Also: COVID is still very much with us, frequently sending "back to the office" workers right home again.
Of note: Apple TV+ had a streaming hit this year with "Severance," which depicts a world of office workers profoundly alienated from themselves via a neural technology that ropes off their work experiences and memories from the rest of their lives.
Our thought bubble: Apple led the personal-computer revolution with an appealing pitch to personal empowerment. The company's reluctance to fully embrace remote work is not only likely to demoralize some of its employees it feels surprisingly off-brand.

Neustar and LiveVox Join Forces to Improve Outbound Customer Contactability – Business Wire
Posted: at 5:42 pm
RESTON, Va. & SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Neustar Inc., a TransUnion company and LiveVox Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: LVOX), a leading cloud-based provider of customer service and digital engagement tools, are collaborating to help improve outbound customer contactability. The partnership integrates Neustar Caller Name Optimization (CNO) and SmartDial solutions into LiveVoxs four separate outbound dialing solutions that help increase contact rates and improve engagement while helping to mitigate compliance risk.
In todays complex and highly regulated digital communications landscape, our goal is to continuously improve the ways our contact center customers connect to their consumers to make the experience as quick and seamless as possible, said LiveVox CEO and co-founder Louis Summe. Communicating with consumers, however, is becoming more difficult because contact information is continuously changing and people are not answering their phones if they dont know or trust who is calling. The integration of CNO and SmartDial into our platform will help enhance our capabilities with identity-based solutionsand enable organizations to connect with consumers and get the most out of each dial, saving time and resources.
LiveVox customers can now more easily mitigate compliance risk, and minimize dials, by automatically leveraging the right number, day and time to reach the right party. In most cases, the solutions take just two weeks to implement. These capabilities will be available to LiveVoxs customers in the financial services, healthcare, telecom, lead generation, and collections industries, among others.
Collectors that employ intelligent contact solutions position themselves to connect with consumers faster, improve revenue recovery and reduce compliance risk, with organizations experiencing an average 25% increase in right party contact rates, said Robert McKay, senior vice president of customer identity and risk solutions for Neustar. The intelligence that CNO and SmartDial provide to enable better customer contactability regardless of the industry helps enhance both consumer trust and efficiency.
CNO helps enterprises designate verified business numbers for all outbound calls, ensuring they are not mislabeled, tagged as spam or blocked. 5 Organisations We’ve Teamed Up With to Empower Africa’s Young People – Global Citizen
Posted: at 5:42 pm
The number of young people in Africa is rising quickly. Africa was home to 226 million people aged 15-24 in 2015 almost a fifth of the youth population worldwide. According to projections, there will be 42% more young people in Africa by 2030.
Already, Africa is home to the worlds largest youth population with 70% of the population of sub-Saharan Africa being under the age of 30.
In Ghana, meanwhile, young people make up just over 35% of the population meaning theres huge potential for young people in Ghana and across sub-Saharan Africa to empower their communities and bring about transformational change. But first, they must be empowered themselves.
So far, however, this empowerment is yet to happen in Ghana (although the government did launch its YouStart programme in March this year aiming to tackle the issue), and it shows in the nations rates of youth unemployment. Ghana has a youth unemployment rate of 12% and an underemployment rate of over 50%, according to the World Bank this month higher than overall unemployment rates across other sub-Saharan African countries, and compared to an average national unemployment rate of about 6%.
Ghana's youth employment challenge is vast and requires an all-round, deliberate, and consistent response, said Pierre Frank Laporte, World Bank Country Director for Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.
The very good news, however, is that there are activists, advocates, and organisations already out there working to empower young people and set them up for the futures they need and deserve. As part of our Global Citizen Festival campaign, and in the run up to Global Citizen Festival: Accra on Sept. 24 find out more about the festival and how you can get free tickets here were working closely with five organizations in Ghana and across sub-Saharan Africa that are empowering young people and changing lives.
Lets dive in to see who these organizations are and what they do.
The Ghana Education Collaborative provides support to exceptional students who are living in poverty in Ghana. As well as academic scholarships, the nonprofit also provides mentorship opportunities, access to a strong peer community, and guidance for students all year round, focusing on leadership development so they can impact their communities too. The organization envisions a time when education is accessible to all Ghanaian students.
Africa Matters Initiative is a youth-led organization that believes Africas large youth population is an opportunity for the continued development and growth of the continent.
To this end, they upskill and empower young Africans through capacity building and community impact projects. The objective is to see all African youth become change-makers who empower those around them.
LEAP Africa is a youth-focused leadership development nonprofit on a mission to inspire, empower, and equip a new generation of leaders with the skills and tools for personal and community transformation.
It provides capacity building for young people in leadership, education, employability, entrepreneurship, and civic participation to enable citizens to demand good governance and creatively address social issues.
Joy Olivier and Makhosi Gogwana founded Ikamva Youth in 2003, working to provide a safe space where students have access to after-school care, including homework support and other services. Having grown from humble beginnings, they now have more than 15 branches across South Africa and support over 5,000 learners yearly.
Junior Achievement Africa empowers and enables youth to thrive in a global economy. To allow young people to own their economic success, they strongly emphasise entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and work readiness.

Through our global campaign and with stages in two iconic locations NYCs Central Park and Accras Black Star Square we will unite leaders, artists, activists, and Global Citizens around the world on Sept. 24 to achieve an ambitious policy agenda focused on empowering girls and women, taking climate action, breaking systemic barriers, and lifting up activists and advocates. What is Witchcore? The Aesthetic Gaining Popularity on Social Media, Explained – The Mary Sue
Posted: at 5:42 pm
If you ever feel lacking in personal inspiration, you need to only look on the internet. On social media, there has been a huge wave of aesthetic trends. The various aesthetics group together an appearance or vibe that people can use as guidelines for fashion or home decor. Some people go a bit more extreme with their adherence to their core aesthetic and forget that there can still be problematic aspects to it.
In 2020, Cottagecore (a celebration of cottage life/simple country living, lots of floral prints, and pastels) made it to the mainstream news. A more recent trend focuses on the neon pink vibe with Barbiecore. Another one on the rise celebrates all things Stevie Nickswait, no, I mean all things witchy (but Stevie is close enough). Lets dive into the moody and beautiful world of Witchcore.
During times of worldly troubles, humans turn towards witchcraft. Overall, it gives us a sense of control and a way to understand the seemingly random (and usually negative) events in the universe. Using potions, herbs, and rituals calms us. So, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, Witchcore (and people identifying as witches) grew into an internet subculture. Who doesnt want a magic potion (salts and herbs) in their baths to relax instantly? And almost everyone has wanted to see into the future by having their tarot cards or palm read at least once.
Even before 2020, a witchy theme had been stirring since the 2016 election. Using witches as an empowerment symbol among women worked to rebel against the patriarchy. One example was the widespread appearance of the phrase we are the granddaughters of the witches you werent able to burn on protest signs on t-shirts. Although witchcraft (and all things related to it) is not a gender-specific practice, it is something that draws in a huge amount of women. With the focus on goddesses (and Mother Earth), self-empowerment, and lack of a condescending father figure, it only makes sense why people who feel powerless in other aspects of society love it.
Witchcore is for everyone, not just people who identify as witches. If you are familiar with the ongoing list of specialized aesthetics, Witchcore is like a combination of Naturecore and Dark Academia with a dash of the mystical. There are dusty tomes, crystals, overgrown plants, glass bottles, herbs, and candles. Brooms, cauldrons, tarot cards, and celestial-themed items also pop up often. Most animals are welcome, such as snakes, crows, and owlsand of course, cats. Lots of cats, especially black ones. Basically, anything that you think a witch would own or be associated with will appear in Witchcore.
For clothing choices, black is always in (but other colors are acceptable). Flowy clothing, large-brimmed hats, and silver jewelry round out the look. Inspiration for outfits can come from popular media like American Horror Story: Coven, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and witchy classic The Craft. Or you can try getting ideas from The Owl House. It may be billed as a kids show, but it is full of super cute witchy stuff and is one of the best shows on television.
A popular aspect of Witchcore is the act of sage burning or smudging. Many do not realize this is cultural appropriation. The use of white sage to smudge a person or an area is a tradition specifically from Native American cultures. Not only is it now trendy to do something indigenous people were once punished for practicing, but such mainstream use of the plant is causing over-harvesting, leaving those who use it for spiritual ceremonies with a dwindling supply. Instead of sage burning/smudging, do a smoke cleanse using homegrown sage, incense, or other herbs. People used smoke cleansing practices all over the world, so you are more than likely to find something that fits with your personal heritage.
For me, the trend is kind of a mixed bag. I have been a practicing witch since I delved into the craft around the age of twelve. This means I have traveled down the path for over twenty years. On the plus side, I can now find clothes and housewares that fit my tastes at mainstream stores. I mean, they are now selling Wiccan books at Target. It also makes witches much less scary and off-putting. Witchcore may even be a way for people to explore witchcraft in a non-threatening way and become full-fledged witches.
However, I would like to remind people that some of us are witches who have not had a lot of community acceptance for our aesthetic. In the past, wearing a pentagram or dressing witchy made you a target rather than cool. Teachers, strangers, and co-workers have harassed me for my beliefs over most of my life. So, please remember that for witches, we dont wear certain symbols because they look cute; it is because they hold power and meaning to us.
Overall, if it makes you happy (and doesnt hurt anyone), do what you want. We can all wear big hats, light a candle, and dance under the full Moon while Rhiannon by Fleetwood Mac plays in the background.
