How Innovative Technology Improves On-the-Job Training – Entrepreneur
Posted: September 6, 2022 at 4:28 am
Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.
Since the dawn of time, methods have existed for training employees to perform new or unfamiliar tasks. From facilitating mentorship between highly competent colleagues and other employees to developing user manuals for technical skills, most companies already have the resources necessary to train their workforce.
But the question arises: Why are companies now choosing to develop new-era on-the-job training programs?
Adaptability is crucial in the modern business world. New platforms, markets and technologies appear to emerge every quarter, making each new venture risky, because the environment is susceptible to change at any moment.
A rise in the number of employees working remotely or through a hybrid model has necessitated these rapid changes in the workplace and industries. Even if a company can adjust its goals and strategy to accommodate these changes, it is an entirely different challenge to ensure that its employees have the skills necessary to adapt rapidly.
Related: 6 Ways to Keep Your Employees Learning At Work
Companies incorporate technology into training programs in a variety of ways. Three of the most innovative include:
Opening up future-oriented education to all:
Offering free training via the internet is part of a larger movement to make information readily available and empower individuals to determine their futures. From Khan Academy to YouTube tutorials, it is evident that the internet is revolutionizing education, particularly skill-based education.
Companies have noted this change. They have begun offering skill-based training programs to talented individuals outside the organization.
TheSoul Publishing is an example of a company that has previously opened up its on-the-job training programs to offer educational experiences to everyone. It transformed its internal Boost Academy into three future-focused camps open to the public. This allowed TheSoul to provide practical training methods that have helped individuals learn skills such as social media management, animation and video production.
Immersive technology:
Immersive training utilizes the power of next-generation technology to develop human-centered on-the-job training programs. They are individualized and do not assume that all employees learn in the same manner and at the same rate.
Immersive technologies combine the physical and digital worlds, including virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). This technology enhances the elements of the most effective forms of on-the-job training, such as gamified online platforms and demonstrator videos aimed at particular skills.
Additionally, VR and AR experiences increase employee engagement to new heights. Employees participate in a hands-on, practical manner by manipulating objects in a digital environment. Thus, employees can perform tasks independently while being permitted to make mistakes from which they can learn and enhance their skills.
Remote onboarding:
A 700-page training manual with a mile-long table of contents may be exhaustive, but it is not engaging for employees.
Another complication is that it is becoming increasingly common for new employees to be onboarded without ever setting foot in a company's office if the company even has a physical office space. Companies have started re-onboarding employees in response to the rapid technological change occurring across all industries to ensure they can utilize the new technologies they have implemented.
Companies can make training significantly more engaging, exciting and digestible by leveraging the dynamic and integrated nature of the latest tools. Employers can ensure employees are truly absorbing and contextualizing content by incorporating entertaining and informative videos and gamification into their programs.
Related: Gamified Training: An Infallible Way For Employee Engagement
Workforces become progressively more flexible:
New technology permits the company-wide implementation of more effective training programs. Digital methods for teaching employees skills are significantly less expensive than traditional, pre-pandemic methods.
A workforce can become flexible and adaptable to whatever the business world throws at it if training is facilitated at the level of the individual employee and the entire organization.
When you have well-trained employees, the attitude that "this is not really part of my job" will disappear. Although you shouldn't train each employee to do everything, training can expand an employee's capabilities beyond the minimum requirements of their initial role. When it comes to unfamiliar tasks, the "no-can-do" philosophy disappears. Instead, employees ask, "Where can I learn how to do this?"
Then a new issue arises: Employees wonder, "Will my boss be upset if I take the time to educate myself?" Therefore, companies must foster an environment in which employees are encouraged and empowered to pursue additional on-the-job training so that employees feel comfortable acquiring new skills. It produces long-term benefits for both the employer and the employee.
Progress evaluation is streamlined:
When it comes to ensuring that employees comprehend complex technical procedures, adhere to essential guidelines and comply with health and safety protocols, companies must do more than simply provide lengthy documents and assume that employees will retain all the information.
This information must be assimilated thoroughly. Companies must determine whether employees have comprehensively understood the topic. Using technology's adaptability, companies can evaluate an employee's progress in real-time using multimedia tools such as games, quizzes and videos. The company can then determine if the on-the-job training was effective or if modifications are required.
Related: Where to Deploy Innovative Tech to Create a More Flexible, Engaging Organization
Employers must adopt the philosophy that if you continue to train, teach and develop your employees, you will always have the most qualified candidates in the roles this is especially beneficial if the company's industry makes it challenging to recruit skilled workers.
On the other hand, this type of philosophy is also attractive to potential employees who not only want to get paid, but also want to develop their own sets of skills via the on-the-job training opportunities the company provides. Improving and expanding access to skill-based training will always benefit both employers and employees.

Auckland University of Technology staff and students in limbo as cuts loom – New Zealand Herald
Posted: at 4:28 am
AUT has asked four faculties to reduce staff levels by between 30 and 50 each. Another 80 general staff are also set to lose their jobs. Photo / Michael Craig
Students and staff at Auckland University of Technology are anxious about their futures after the university proposed cuts to jobs and courses.
AUT has outlined plans to cut 150 academic staff and 80 general staff, with the changes taking effect in November.
David Sinfield, a senior lecturer in art and design, said he was "in the firing line" but would not know of his fate for at least four to six weeks.
"It's extremely stressful and worrying. Everybody that I know of at AUT other than the Deans and the VC office are all in the same position of not knowing whether they will have a job at the end of the year."
Sinfield, who is the AUT branch president for the Tertiary Education Union, had been at the university for 17 years, and said this was his third round of restructuring.
"I know many people that have been there for 20 years plus, so there's a lot of people that have given their lives and their careers to AUT. And to be treated like this is actually appalling, in my view."
He said academic staff had adjusted to increased workloads, online teaching and other pressures during the Covid-19 pandemic.
"There are a lot of staff that are extremely exhausted from doing that over Covid. And to be faced with this now is really a kick in the teeth."
AUT Vice Chancellor Damon Salesa said yesterday that the proposed restructure was driven by a large fall in international student numbers, rising inflation and other economic pressures.
Universities New Zealand CEO Chris Whelan said New Zealand universities were facing the "perfect storm": flat domestic student numbers, hugely reduced international student numbers, and high inflation.
"Every university is balancing the same challenges right now wanting to retain as much of their workforce as they can for the time when we do get the students back but having to get through a period of time.
"We don't know whether it's three years, we don't know whether it's five years, we don't know whether it's longer, but basically reducing costs now, by a small amount, means that we avoid larger cuts later on."
The borders reopened on July 31, but it was not known how many international students would return or how quickly.
"We know that numbers are not going to be for 2023 anything like they were pre-Covid," Whelan said. "It's going to take time for students to come back in some cases just the flights are not available yet. There are countries like China, which have yet to fully open up and allow their students to travel."
Seven out of eight of the universities had already reduced staff by a total of around 700 during the pandemic, mostly on a voluntary basis. Massey University began a restructure in August which the union says could affect another 150 jobs.
Tertiary Education Union national president Tina Smith said AUT's latest restructuring did not necessarily foreshadow further, broader cuts across the university sector.
As a relatively new university, AUT did not have the same financial reserves as more established institutions, she said.
It also has a relatively high rate of international students, meaning the border closures have had a greater impact on its financial situation.
Smith said many students were concerned about the proposed cuts and were trying to decide what they would do next year.
"These moves to cut staff are not encouraging students to stay or go to AUT. It is such a lose-lose situation."
AUT has asked four faculties to reduce staff by between 30 and 50 members: Design and Creative Technologies; Culture and Society; Business, Economics and Law; and Health and Environmental Sciences,

If youve ever listened to or watched the video for Panteras 5 Minutes Alone and thought hm, Phil could use more nipple pasties and less knowledge of the songs lyrics and rhythm, then boy howdy do we have something for you. Also who hurt you?
Earlier today, King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp and his wife, actress and singer Toyah Wilcox released the latest iteration of their Toyah & Roberts Sunday Lunch series with a rendition of that classic Pantera tune. While theres not much to say about the musicality of the video, theres still the revealing attire and she at least understand the songs about punching someones lights out with those boxing gloves.
As we mentioned earlier, these two are apparently planning to go on tour together in the future. I wonder whose entire list of dates will come out sooner Panteras or theirs. Only time will tell.

This Band Made a $3.44 Music Video. Then They Went Viral – Wired.co.uk
Posted: at 4:24 am
Smoko originally blew up when a local surf shop posted it on its Facebook page. By the time the video surpassed a half a million views, the Chats were being profiled on the local news. Soon after, they started touring the world. Its just a constant pinching-yourself moment, Sandwith says. How do these people know about us? Let alone like us enough to come watch us?
And all this for a band that is almost calculatingly insular. The band name came from a term drummer Matt Boggis picked up in Sydney. All of a sudden, he was like, thats chat, this is chat. We were like, What the fuck does that mean? Boggis explains, Its just something you say when somethings really shit. So they named themselves the Chats. Then they kept pumping out songs informed by the particular world view of their friend group. Their latest single, Ive Been Drunk in Every Pub in Brisbane, spends a good chunk of its 97-second run time naming said bars. It was almost an in-joke, Sandwith says, to use all manner of vernacular that only certain people from our area would understand. Not even Australian people! Just people from our town.
When touring abroad, particularly in the US, Sandwith says, theres a bit of weird tokenism. People are very much like, Oh, can you say Gday? I guess Australia is almost a mythical place they imagined. What differentiates the Chats in particular is that theyre a rare media representation for the Sunshine Coast, or Sunny Coast, in the northern state of Queensland. Queensland in general is seen as more of a redneck kind of place, especially to people from the southern states, Sandwith explains. But to me, its just like, a place. And its their eternal muse. The more insular they go, the more the world loves it. Its just our world. Its what we see and what we do. I mean, it wouldnt make heaps of sense for us to write a song about fucking Paris or something.
When Smoko first started doing numbers, Sandwith didnt get carried away. I remember thinking, I know how the internet works! Somethings cool for a bit and then its like pffffft. Everyone could just go back to not giving a fuck about us next week. But here they are, five years later. I didnt think it would stand the test of time, where people would still care about us, he says. But they still do!

Cheshire ‘big cat’ sighting as animal ‘bigger than Dalmation’ sat on roadside – Cheshire Live
Posted: at 4:23 am
A woman has reported seeing an animal "a bit bigger than a Dalmatian" sat on the side of a rural Cheshire road.
She was travelling as a passenger in a car when she spotted the 'big cat' at around 12.30pm on Sunday, August 21.
What is thought to have been a brown lynx was sat at the side of the A550 Welsh Road at its junction with Ledsham Hall Lane near Little Sutton.
READ MORE: Possible 'big cat' sighting in Chester as commuter spots black animal running across road
Izzy told Puma Watch North Wales: I was a passenger in a car and as we turned onto the Welsh Road I saw the big cat sat in the road against the bushes. I held my view for about 5 seconds and the animal looked just a bit bigger than a Dalmatian. It was brown with hints of black and pointy ears. It was sat about 15 meters away from any cars.
The latest sighting comes two months after a 'fairly large, black' animal was reported near Blacon, just outside Chester. A commuter reported seeing a 'streamlined' animal on Sealand Road, near to the Texaco garage. The commuter, Davidson, was driving home from their place of work in Chester at around 12.30am last Saturday (June 18). They reported that the animal ran across the road and into the fields nearby.
In 2021, no fewer than 20 sightings of a 'big cat' or a 'puma' were reported to Puma Watch North Wales from the Cheshire area. These sightings included footage of an alleged puma stalking through fields in Frodsham, a big cat on the Chester meadows, and another pouncing in front of a car on the Tarvin roundabout.
In February, the UK Government set out the steps it takes to investigate such reports, after the Welsh Government announced that reports of wild big cats are "taken seriously and investigated thoroughly."
A spokesperson for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), said: "If Natural England (NE) were presented with credible information to suggest there was a big cat living wild and posing a threat to agriculture (such as predating livestock), it would work with Defra to take appropriate action. Evidence would be assessed on a case by case basis. Natural England would analyse any evidence presented to them, at first internally, and take expert external advice as and when its needed.
"Likewise, if NE were presented with credible information to suggest there was a big cat living wild and posing a threat to public health and safety, it would report the matter to the local police. Rare cases of escapees, such as a Lynx from Dartmoor Zoo in July 2016, tend to involve the local authority as the escape is likely to have resulted from a breach of the keepers Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976 Licence or Zoo Licence.
"In all cases reported to Natural England in recent years, there has been no credible evidence supplied that would justify any action by Defra/Home Office/police."

I went to take a photo of an orca at SeaWorld but it had a DEAD trainer in its mouth when it came to the… – The US Sun
Posted: at 4:23 am
A VISITOR to SeaWorld recalled the terrifying moment she went to take a photo of an orca only to see a dead trainer in its mouth.
Dawn Brancheau was attacked by notorious killer whale Tilikum after the huge creature dragged her into the water by her hair and brutally battered her to death.

The 40-year-old died from drowning with her spinal cord severed and was scalped by the "psychotic orca, which killed two other people during its 30 years in captivity.
Haunting video taken in the minutes leading up to her death shows Dawn performing with the massive Tilikum - who weighed six tons and was 22ft long - in front of the crowd at SeaWorld.
Dawn's death led to major changes at the parks - and now trainers do not get in the tanks with the orcas.
One of those watching was Susanne De Wit, a tourist from the Netherlands, who witnessed what unfolded and gave a statement to investigators.
After lunch at around 1.30pm she said went to a viewing area where she was told Tilikum would come to a viewing window for photo.
De Wit says she attended the Lunch with Shamu event referring to the stage name given by SeaWorld to multiple orcas.
On the day she visited, the show was performed by Tilikum but she refers to him as Shamu in the statement given to the Orange County Sheriff's Office, which The Sun Online has seen.
"We saw Shamu at the window straight up," she said.
They told us he was playing with the trainer. Suddenly I saw Shamu grabbing the trainer by the shoulder and pulling her down in the water near the window.
It did not look normal. It was scary. He was very wild with the trainer still in the whales mouth. The whales tail was very wild in the water.
The tour guide pulled us out and there was a full alarm. We then saw them throw a net into the water.
The whale was underneath. We didnt see the trainer at this point.
De Wit was also interviewed by a detective from the Sheriffs office and the grisly details also formed part of their report into Branchaeus death.
Susanne De Wit saw Tilikum swimming down holding the trainer in his mouth, says the report about Dawn's death in February 2010.
Tilikum was holding the trainer by her shoulder and neck. Susanne DeWit could see the trainers legs.
"Tilikum was shaking the trainer and moving extremely fast.
A timeline of events using video taken by another visitor shows that Brancheaus lifeless body was seen in Tilikums mouth at around 1.43pm.
The time of death given on the Sheriffs department report is "approximately" 1.37pm.
Dawn was an experienced trainer seen as a 'poster girl' for SeaWorld and her shocking death ignited heated debates around whales in captivity and spurred changes to SeaWorld's safety practices.
Her sister Debbie told The Sun Online animal lover Dawn was devoted to the whales she worked with and she is still trying to process her death.
Tilikum was torn away from his family in waters off the coast of Iceland in 1983 and put into a concrete holding tank at Hafnarfjrdur Marine Zoo near Reykjavk.
After months spent swimming in circles, the orca was shipped off to Sealand of the Pacific in 1984.
In 1991, Tilikum was still cooped up at the Sealand park in Canada when a young part-time worker slipped and plunged into the pool.
Onlookers watched on in terror as Tilikum and his two tankmates repeatedly dragged marine biology student Keltie Byrne underwater.
He ferociously dragged her around the pool and stopping her from surfacing as the 21-year-old was heard saying I dont want to die.
Staff frantically tried to throw her a life ring but she was unable to reach it as the whales treated her like a "plaything".
In a terrifying 10-minute ordeal, Keltie managed to reach the surface twice as her haunting screams echoed around the pool.
When she came up for the third time, she had tragically drowned.
Eight years later, Tilikum struck again.
On the morning of July 6, 1999, horrified trainers found the body of a 27-year-old man over Tilikum's back.
Daniel Dukes had visited SeaWorld the day before and stayed after the park closed - somehow escaping the watching eyes of security.
He entered Tilikum's tank unclothed and by the next morning had been mauled to death.
SeaWorld said in a statement: "That tragic situation happened more than 12 years ago.
"Trainers have not been in the water training with killer whales for many years.
"We have extensive protocols and training in place to protect the safety of our trainers and animals.

Staff Reports| Lubbock Avalanche-Journal
Shavez Hart, an Olympics sprinter from the Bahamas who ran collegiately for South Plains College and Texas A&M, died early Saturday in a shooting in his home country.
The Bahamas media companies Tribune242 and the Nassau Guardian reported Hart was killed as he tried to intervene in a physical altercation between a group of men in the parking lot of a nightclub in Mount Hope, Abaco. He would've turned 30 on Tuesday.
Hart won the 100 and the 200 meters for South Plains at the 2012 NJCAA outdoor track and field championships and finished third and second in the same events the following year. He achieved all-America status 10 times for Texas A&M.
He ran personal bests of 10.10 seconds in the 100 meters, third fastest all-time by a Bahamian, and 20.23 in the 200. He was a four-time national champion in the 100 between 2014 and 2019, Tribune242 reported, and a four-time national champion in the 200 between 2014 and 2018. He competed in both events at the 2016 Olympics.
He also won a silver medal at the 2016 IAAF indoor World Championships on a Bahamas 1,600-meter relay team that included Texas Tech ex Michael Mathieu.
Blaine Wiley, a former South Plains assistant coach now on staff at Alabama, called Hart's death "absolutely devastating news."
"I had the honor of coaching 'Sparkie' at South Plains College where he remains the school record holder and won many NJCAA championships. RIP," Wiley wrote on social media.
Hart was the second former Texas A&M track star to die this year at age 29. Deon Lendore, his former teammate at A&M and an Aggies volunteer assistant coach, died in an auto accident in January in Milam County.
