IBM and VMware expand their technology partnership – SiliconANGLE News

IBM Corp. and VMware Inc. are expanding their long-running partnership to better support customers information technology modernization initiatives.

The companies announced the move today at the VMware Explore 2022 conference in San Francisco. The expanded alliance places a particular emphasis on public sector organizations, as well as private sector companies in regulated industries such as healthcare and finance.

As part of the expanded alliance, VMware has named IBMs IBM Consulting division a Global Systems Integrator partner. IBM Consulting will provide services intended to help organizations modernize their workloads and move them to newer technology infrastructure. Additionally, the division will assist organizations with the day-to-day maintenance work involved in running applications.

This ongoing collaboration will enable us to better streamline the user experience for our mutual enterprise customers looking to run VMware mission critical workloads that require higher levels of security, resiliency and compliance support in financial services and regulated industries, said Mark Lohmeyer, senior vice president and general manager of VMwares cloud infrastructure business.

Another focus of the expanded partnership is the VMware and IBM Joint Innovation Lab. Originally launched in 2018, the lab is a hub where employees from the two companies collaborate on joint engineering initiatives. IBM and VMware will provide additional funding for the hub that will enable it to continue developing new offerings.

The company companies today that the VMware and IBM Joint Innovation Lab has completed 20 hybrid cloud and artificial intelligence projects since its launch. As part of its work, the lab has produced multiple reference architectures, blueprints that make it easier to use IBM and VMware products in the same technology environment.

Last year, IBM expanded its product portfolio with a platform called IBM Cloud Satellite. The platform enables customers to deploy key services from the companys public cloud in their on-premises data centers. IBM today stated that it will equip IBM Cloud Satellite with improved support for on-premises workloads that run on VMware software.

Together, IBM and VMware are supporting our mutual clients in regulated industries by offering something no two other companies are delivering to more easily leverage hybrid cloud services securely wherever and however they wish to run them, said Howard Boville, the senior vice president of the IBM Cloud Platform.

Last year, IBM spun off its managed infrastructure services division into an independent company called Kyndryl Holdings Inc. that is now traded on the NYSE. A few weeks after the spinoff, VMware announced a new collaboration with Kyndryl focused on the virtualization providers Tanzu suite of multicloud products. As part of the collaboration, Kyndryl will provide advisory, implementation and IT management services to help companies run Tanzu in their technology environments.

Cohesity Research Reveals that Reliance on Legacy Technology Is Undermining How Organizations Respond to Ransomware – DARKReading

SAN JOSE, Calif. Aug. 29, 2022 (BUSINESS WIRE) New global research commissioned by Cohesity, a leader in next-gen data management, reveals that nearly half of respondents say their company depends on outdated, legacy backup and recovery infrastructure to manage and protect their data. In some cases, this technology is more than 20 years old, and was designed long before todays multicloud era and onslaught of sophisticated cyberattacks plaguing enterprises globally.

In this survey, we found nearly 100 respondents who said their organizations are relying on outdated data infrastructure, and this raises the question, how many other businesses are in the same situation around the world?

Challenges pertaining to outdated infrastructure could easily be compounded by the fact that many IT and security teams dont seem to have a plan in place to mobilize if and when a cyberattack occurs. Nearly 60% of respondents* expressed some level of concern that their IT and security teams would be able to mobilize efficiently to respond to an attack.

These are just some of the findings from an April 2022 survey, conducted by Censuswide, of more than 2,000 IT and SecOps professionals (split nearly 50/50 between the two groups) in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. All respondents play a role in the decision-making process for IT or security within their organizations.

IT and security teams should raise the alarm bell if their organization continues to use antiquated technology to manage and secure their most critical digital asset their data, said Brian Spanswick, chief information security officer, Cohesity. Cyber criminals are actively preying on this outdated infrastructure, as they know it was not built for todays dispersed, multicloud environments, nor was it built to help companies protect and rapidly recover from sophisticated cyberattacks.

Backup and Recovery Infrastructure That Could Be Considered Archaic

Forty-six percent of respondents said that their organization relies on primary backup and recovery infrastructure that was designed in, or before, 2010. Nearly 100 respondents (94 out of 2011) revealed that their organization relies on backup and recovery infrastructure that was built before the new millennium in the 1990s.

Enterprises are utilizing this legacy technology despite the fact that managing and securing data environments has become much more complex, not just because of the exponential growth in structured and unstructured data, but because of the vast array of locations where that data is stored. Forty-one percent of respondents stated that they store data on-premises, 43% rely on public cloud storage, 53% utilize a private cloud, and 44% have adopted a hybrid model (some respondents are using more than one option).

In 2022, the fact that any organization is using technology to manage their data that was designed in the 1990s is frightening, given that data can be compromised, exfiltrated, held hostage, and it can create massive compliance issues for organizations, said Spanswick. In this survey, we found nearly 100 respondents who said their organizations are relying on outdated data infrastructure, and this raises the question, how many other businesses are in the same situation around the world?

What Keeps IT and SecOps Teams Up at Night

Respondents highlighted what they believe would be their biggest barriers to getting their organization back up and running after a successful ransomware attack. The findings are as follows (respondents were asked to check all that apply):

What Do Survey Respondents Want Management to Prioritize?

Respondents revealed that modernizing data management, protection, and recovery capabilities, in addition to increasing collaboration between IT and SecOps, offers a path to strengthening their organizations security postures and multicloud operations. Both IT decision-makers and SecOps should co-own the cyber-resilience outcomes, and this includes an evaluation of all infrastructure used in accordance with the NIST framework for data identification, protection, detection, response, and recovery. Also, both teams need to have a comprehensive understanding of the potential attack surface, said Spanswick. Next-gen data management platforms can close the technology gap, improve data visibility, help IT and SecOps teams sleep better at night, and stay one step ahead of bad actors who take great delight in exfiltrating data from legacy systems that cant be recovered.

Murphy calls for investments in technology, diplomacy to curb drug and gun trafficking – Connecticut Public

U.S. Senator Chris Murphy from Connecticut recently returned from a visit to Colombia and Mexico, where he discussed the "vicious cycle" of drug and weapons trafficking across the U.S.Mexico border.

There is a vicious cycle of guns moving South and drugs moving North, Murphy said.

Drug overdoses are the leading cause of accidental death in Connecticut, and 86% of overdoses involve fentanyl.

Murphy, who chairs the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security, said that Congress has authorized $700 million for new technology to help identify fentanyl at the border, but that only 10 percent of it has been used. He added that most of the fentanyl seized by the U.S. government arrives at the border through legal ports of entry.

He also called on the Biden administration to work with the Chinese government to crack down on the illegal export of ingredients used to produce fentanyl.

Murphy said he plans to propose additional investment in x-ray and thermal scanning technology that could help detect firearms in vehicles moving south. Experts say that a large portion of the firearms in Mexico come from the United States.

Physical inspections were never going to be the solution, Murphy said. If you inspected rigorously every single car or truck that shows up at the border, you would stop commerce between the United States and Mexico. But the non-intrusive inspections allow you to inspect every single vehicle while allowing traffic to move relatively freely.

Leading global tire manufacturer to invest $612 million in phase three expansion

Project represents the creation of nearly 400 new jobs in Clarksville

NASHVILLE, Tenn. Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee, Department of Economic and Community Development Commissioner Stuart McWhorter and Hankook Tire & Technology Co., Ltd officials announced today the company will invest $612 million in its third major manufacturing expansion since breaking ground on the companys state-of-the-art Clarksville facility in 2014.

Located off International Boulevard, Hankook Tire will create 397 new jobs in Montgomery County over the next five years.

Through this project, Hankook Tire will complete its Phase Two expansion in order to double its production of passenger car and light truck (PC/LT) tires while simultaneously conducting its Phase Three expansion to add the companys first U.S. production line of Truck Bus and Radial (TBR) tires to the Clarksville operations. Upon completion, Hankook Tires Tennessee plant will house the companys production, warehousing, building, equipment and utilities.

The more than two-million-square-foot facility is expected to begin tire production by the final quarter of 2024, reaching full capacity by early 2026.

Founded in 1941 and globally headquartered in South Korea, Hankook Tire has been a part of the U.S. tire market since 1981. In 2016, Hankook Tire America Corp. relocated its North American headquarters to Nashville, Tennessee, following the companys decision to locate a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Clarksville. Hankook Tires newest expansion will bring the companys total investment in Tennessee to nearly $2.2 billion and with the addition of nearly 400 new jobs, the company will employ roughly 2,300 across the state.

Studies show that depletion of negative ions in a closed space can heavily affect concentration. It can cause somnolence, fatigue, slow reactions and increased irritation.

A brief look at negative ions

When you apply energy to an atom, it becomes electrically charged. These atoms are called air ions and when they gain an electron they turn into negative ions. The technology that uses them is called negative ion technology, or electron technology. It has been around for a long time and applied in various ways.

One example is correcting the lack of negative ions in a sealed place like a car. Another is wearable tech, such as silicone wristbands and athletic kinesiology tapes, that help maintain health, balance energy, and improve emotional well-being. It has also found application as sterilisation technology, which uses a large number of negative ions to effectively kill bacteria in stored food.

In the post-COVID world, the innovation found a new application in ionisers, proving an extremely potent shield against all types of viruses, including the coronavirus.

The science behind electron technology

The electric charge of ions attracts and then captures suspended particles. What an ioniser does is generate and emit these negative ions. The ions collide with any particulate matter in the air, transferring the negative charge.

The collector plate in an ioniser, which has a positive charge, traps the particles. Thus, eliminating viruses, dust, particles, droplets, etc., and suspending further transmission through the air.
