Paper: Train future psychologists to dismantle racism, injustice in society – University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

Posted: August 30, 2022 at 11:49 pm

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. A team of psychologists representing several universities has created an anti-racist training model for psychologists that will prepare them to dismantle racism in society, as opposed to only teaching coping skills to individuals. The team is also calling upon the psychology discipline to acknowledge the racist theories and practices in its history and the inequities they created.

While the training, called the Public Psychology for Liberation model, was designed for public psychologists those who work in public settings the team says it would have universal benefit for everyone in their discipline, regardless of field.

Educational psychology professor Nidia Ruedas-Gracia co-wrote the study, published in a special issue of the journal American Psychologist that focused on public psychology.

In a recently published paper, the team outlined the new training paradigm, saying that it challenges the anti-Blackness, racial oppression and myths of white supremacy embedded in society and built uncritically into our training and discipline.

We want to transform with whom, what and how we teach, research and write by centering on the people most marginalized in society and the experiences and topics that they want to research, said Helen A. Neville, a professor of educational psychology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and the first author of the paper.

The model also represents a commitment to provide mental health services in the public sector to, by and with some of the societys most oppressed people. Grounded in the principles of liberation psychology which emphasize collective well-being, consciousness of social injustices and resistance to the normalization of discrimination and oppression the PPL model has the potential to transform community members lives, the team said.

It includes centering social problems and the concerns of the global majority in our work and engaging diverse communities in knowledge creation from the very beginning to the very end, said U. of I. educational psychology professor and co-author Nidia Ruedas-Gracia.

Doctoral student Amir H. Maghsoodi was a co-author of the study.

Another part of public psychology is better communicating psychology knowledge. We have our journals that are oftentimes behind paywalls or embargoes, and we tend to keep that knowledge in this box and only open the door to certain people.

Under the PPL model, psychologists and community members would codevelop and share relevant and accessible tools to promote healing and well-being, enabling marginalized populations to rise above systems of oppression and social isolation, according to the paper.

Historically, Western psychology that practiced in North and South America and Europe has pathologized the individual for the mental and emotional wounds inflicted by systemic racism, said co-author B. Andi Lee, a predoctoral candidate in clinical-community psychology.

A lot of our treatments are so individually centered that they dont take into consideration what might be causing unwellness, Lee said. People end up internalizing a lot of their struggles as self-issues when really, they are natural responses to structural inequality and oppression. We end up teaching our clients to adapt to oppression rather than working to transform these surrounding conditions for liberation.

A spider web illustrates the interconnectedness of the skills and lifelong practices that compose the PPL training model.

Although their paper focused on the global majority those who are Black, Indigenous or other people of color team members said the framework they propose would apply to other groups in the U.S. that experience the greatest systemic oppression the poor, immigrants, women from all backgrounds and those of diverse sexual and gender orientations.

The PPL training encompasses five foundational domains or areas of expertise to help psychologists develop capacities such as ethical consciousness, facilitating human and community relationships, and creating empowering learning sites skills that would benefit colleagues in nearly all psychology fields, such as developmental and general psychology.

They also outline 10 lifelong practices including relationality, which involves connections to family, the community and nature; responsibility to learn from and alongside people from the global majority; and respect for community members strengths and gifts.

Published in a special issue of the journal American Psychologist that explored the concept of public psychology, the paper called for substantive changes within the discipline of Western psychology itself including its white- and Eurocentric-oriented perspectives.

In its current form, Western psychology is not a multicultural endeavor, said co-author Nimot Ogunfemi, a doctoral intern in counseling psychology at the university.

When we start to include and really value the information from other communities, we have to welcome and be really open to different worldviews, Ogunfemi said. Often, there are similarities in these worldviews. As more people enter the space and find voice, well begin to see that and experience these different approaches to psychology.

Along with addressing the harms inflicted by societal injustice, the team suggested that Western psychology must confront its legacy of inequities such as those created and perpetuated through the eugenics movement and intelligence testing, Neville said.

If at its roots the theories, perspectives and empirical research are designed to pathologize a group of people and to hold another group of people superior, it is reinforcing inequalities in society, Neville said. Its so important that we transform ourselves in order to transform the discipline. And part of transforming ourselves is unlearning what we learned during our training in psychology.

Other co-authors were U. of I. doctoral student Amir H. Maghsoodi; psychologist Della V. Mosley, of the Wellness, Equity, Love, Liberation and Sexuality Healing, Research and Consultation Collective and Radical Healing; counseling psychologist and professor Teresa D. LaFromboise, of Stanford University; and social psychologist and professor Michelle Fine, of the City University of New York.

Croydons Pearson feels the pressure in MasterChef kitchen – Inside Croydon

Posted: at 11:49 pm

Celebrity MasterChefs latest series enters its final round of heats tonight, featuring one of Croydons most recognisable figures: actor, presenter and disability rights campaigner Adam Pearson.

Inside Croydon last encountered Pearson in person in the Royal Standard, the pub under the Flyover, where he helpfully handed us a menu from their recently re-opened kitchen. We wondered whether he had been doing a spot of moonlighting to get in some practice ahead of his appearance on one of weekday tellys most-watched programmes.

If you ever see me in the kitchen at the Royal Standard very much the wrong side of the bar it means a lot of things have gone very, very wrong in a very specific order, Pearson said in an exclusive interview.

I wouldnt want to do that to my friends who drink there or to the staff.

Pearson is one of 20 contestants in the latest series, alongside the likes of former world champion boxer Chris Eubank, Birds of a Feathers Lesley Joseph and comedian Richard Blackwood, who are trying to create some delicious dishes and impress the judges Gregg Wallace and John Torode.

Pearson has a disfigurement as a result of Neurofibromatosis, a genetic condition that causes excess body tissue to grow on nerve endings, causing non-cancerous tumours (called fibromas) to occur.

Pearson worked as a researcher for the BBC and Channel 4 before becoming a strand presenter on the first series of Channel 4s Beauty & The Beast: The Ugly Face Of Prejudice. He has fronted a variety of documentaries including Eugenics: Sciences Greatest Scandal (BBC Four), the critically-acclaimed Horizon: My Amazing Twin (BBC2), and The Ugly Face Of Disability Hate Crime (BBC Three), as well as being a reporter on The One Show (BBC1).

In 2013, he appeared in the BAFTA award-nominated film, Under The Skin, directed by Jonathan Glazer.

Pearson is an ambassador for The Princes Trust, Changing Faces and Us In A Bus. He has won a RADAR Award and a Diana Award for his campaigning work.

But appearing on the celebrity cooking show, now in its 17th season, and being watched by more than 5million viewers, can be a bit of a stretch even for the most accomplished home cooks.

I do very little cooking at home, Pearson admitted.

Im semi-competent when it comes to my culinary prowess, though with all that being said, a combination of a very house-proud Mummy P coupled with a dangerous short attention span means I find cooking to be a mildly stressful endeavour.

Once I got the call from my agent confirming the booking it became this massive scramble to learn and upskill as much as possible in as little time.

The programmes two presenter-judges, Torode and Wallace, come with a well-deserved reputation for being tough to please. Although with the show in celebrity mode, the chef and the south London greengrocer go out of their way to help the contestants as much as they dare in the against-the-clock cookery challenges.

John and Gregg were both lovely, Pearson said.

Of course, theres a high level of both intensity and pressure that comes with being in the MasterChef kitchen. Its exactly how it is on the TV apron on, clock starts and you either fly or die under the weight of your own culinary brilliance.

If anything, having John and Gregg there calms you down!

Pearson revealed a particular quirk of the MasterChef kitchen which caused him extra anxiety as a novice cook.

Induction hobs and ovens are the most annoying invention since the Tamagotchi, Pearson said.

Im used to gas, Id practised on gas, the numbers on an induction set up are utterly meaningless to me the instructions could have been in Latin and Id have still had the same level of bemusement.

Also the whole cooking thing was a bit of a struggle.

Which is a bit of a problem for a contestant on a high-profile cooking show

The publicists working for the broadcasters went to great lengths to avoid giving away any spoilers, even the slightest hint of how Pearson might have got on in the recording of tonights heats, where he appears alongside actor Ryan Thomas, presenter Lisa Snowdon, drag act Kitty Scott-Claus and dancer Katya Jones.

They even refused to share any of Pearsons recipes used in the show, or to say whether Call The Midwifes Cliff Parisi, who got through to the semi-finals in an earlier round after appearing to serve up proper London pie and mash, used eel juice in preparing his green liquor.

But they did allow us to ask what was Pearsons toughest moment on the show.

All of it, he said, without hesitation.

Dont mishear me, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, learned a lot and met some cracking people (Ryan Thomas baybay!).

Its an intense competition and truly based in skill as someone who loves to eat but has a complicated relationship with cooking, I was stunned at how intense it was, but also how much I got into it.

UK Government Bodies Behind Nanotechnology Research Funding – AZoNano

Posted: at 11:47 pm

UK universities are world-leading nanotechnology research centers, backed up by strategic public investment.

Public funding for science and technology in the UK is overseen by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), and funded through the UK Governments Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. The funding landscape is dynamic and changes frequently, but the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) is responsible for much public investment into nanotechnology research, while other councils such as the Medical Research Council (MRC) also contribute.

The EPSRC is a UK research council that directs government funding in the form of research grants and postgraduate degree funding for (mostly) UK universities. Public funding for nanotechnology research undertaken at universities is largely granted with EPSRC funding calls.

Nanotechnology development is also privately funded in the UK in an active venture capital environment.

The UK is a world leader in graphene and carbon nanotechnology research, with the University of Manchester, in particular, remaining a focal point for international research on graphene since the two-dimensional material was first described by its own researchers a few decades ago.

In this research area, EPSRC funds research to advance theoretical knowledge, characterization, and synthesis of carbon-based nanomaterials such as graphene, graphene oxide, and carbon nanotubes.

Funding is intended to help researchers understand carbon nanomaterials properties, develop new methods for growing these materials, understand how defects influence their properties, and explore applications for nanoscale carbon-based electronics.

EPSRC is focused on funding projects with strong end-user orientated research embedded within to establish strong links with the manufacturing sector and good routes to commercialization.

Other applications for this research area include biomaterials and tissue engineering, energy storage, microelectronics, and manufacturing technologies.

In 2022, EPSRC is investing approximately 29 million in graphene and carbon nanotechnology research through university grants, with the University of Manchester receiving the largest share with nine grants totaling 10.7 million or 37% of the total funded.

The University of Cambridge, and Norwich, Nottingham, and Bristol Universities also receive a relatively large share of graphene and carbon nanotechnology-based EPSRC funding.

Functional ceramics and inorganic materials is another defined area of EPSRC funding activity that awards grants for nanotechnology research.

Areas studied include electroceramics, complex oxides, solid-state materials, inorganic 2D materials (other than carbon-based materials like graphene), and inorganic framework materials.

The council believes that advanced materials like these can have a significant impact in the UKs economy, environmental costs, and on society as a whole.

As a result, proposals that develop potential applications in areas such as microelectronics, radio frequency and microwave technology, biomaterials and tissue engineering, and materials engineering are encouraged.

EPSRC is currently investing about 68 million here, with a significant proportion of this for projects with applications in energy and manufacturing. This reflects the UKs industrial ambitions.

The Universities of Cambridge, Leeds, and Manchester, Imperial College London, and UCL receive much of the EPSRC funding under this theme. However, investment is split relatively evenly between a lot more institutions than in graphene and carbon nanotechnology.

Polymer materials is another area of EPSRC research funding that provides grants to researchers working on nanotechnology in UK institutions.

There is currently about 53 million of public investment going towards polymer materials research, with eight grants totaling 5.2 million (nearly a tenth) specifically directed for research combining progress in polymer materials with graphene and carbon nanotechnology.

Funding is to gain a better theoretical understanding of novel polymer materials such as polymer nanocomposites, develop improved synthesis and characterization approaches, and explore applications, for example, in soft nanotechnology.

The UK is a leader in polymer materials research internationally, contributing approximately 17% of research to the top 10% of highly cited publications in fields like polymerization methodology.

Nottingham and Durham Universities receive more EPSRC funding in this area than other institutions, with about 9 million each in 2022, or approximately 17% of the total amount funded for polymer materials research.

As well as EPSRC, nanotechnology research is sometimes funded by other UK government bodies. A key example is the Medical Research Council (MRC). The MRC funds research that can change lives through improved health outcomes.

The Molecular and Cellular Medicine Board (MCMB), a part of the MRC, in particular tends to fund nanotechnology research with health applications. The MCMB is focused on developing chemical, physical, and biological tools for studying and manipulating biological systems including nanotechnology, synthetic biology, and chemical biology.

MCMB also funds pharmacology research to gain a better understanding of drug delivery mechanisms, which are increasingly using nanotechnology methods to improve patient outcomes.

The board also funds research into risks posed by nanoparticles on human health.

Nanotechnology research for health and care is also funded by various charities and NGOs (non-governmental organizations).

Bar-Ilan University researchers produce nanodiamonds capable of delivering medicinal and cosmetic remedies through the skin – EurekAlert

Posted: at 11:47 pm

image:A novel approach, developed by researchers at Bar-Ilan University in Israel, provides an innovative solution to overcoming two major challenges in delivering medicinal and cosmetic remedies through the skin. Combining techniques in nanotechnology and optics, they produced tiny (nanometric) diamond particles so small that they are capable of penetrating skin to deliver these remedies. Next, they created a safe, laser-based optical method that quantifies nanodiamond penetration into the various layers of the skin and determines their location and concentration within body tissue in a non-invasive manner eliminating the need for a biopsy.Image: Nanodiamond applied on skin samples and penetrated through all skin layers: nanodiamond concentration reduces as the layer is deeper view more

Credit: Prof. Dror Fixler, Bar-Ilan University

The skin is one of the largest and most accessible organs in the human body, but penetrating its deep layers for medicinal and cosmetic treatments still eludes science.

Although there are some remedies -- such as nicotine patches to stop smoking -- administered through the skin, this method of treatment is rare since the particles that penetrate must be no larger than 100 nanometer (one thousandth of a centimeter). Creating effective tools using such tiny particles is a great challenge. Because the particles are so small and difficult to see, it is equally challenging to determine their exact location inside the body information necessary to ensure that they reach intended target tissue. Today such information is obtained through invasive, often painful, biopsies.

A novel approach, developed by researchers at Bar-Ilan University in Israel, provides an innovative solution to overcoming both of these challenges. Combining techniques in nanotechnology and optics, they produced tiny (nanometric) diamond particles so small that they are capable of penetrating skin to deliver medicinal and cosmetic remedies. In addition, they created a safe, laser-based optical method that quantifies nanodiamond penetration into the various layers of the skin and determines their location and concentration within body tissue in a non-invasive manner eliminating the need for a biopsy.

This innovation was just published by researchers from the University's Institute of Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials, in cooperation with the Kofkin Faculty of Engineering and Department of Chemistry, in the scientific journal ACS Nano.

Nanodiamonds -- a millionth of a millimeter in size -- are produced by detonating explosives inside a closed chamber. Under these conditions high temperature and pressure cause the carbon atoms found in explosives to fuse together. The nanodiamonds created in the process are small enough to penetrate tissue and even cells -- without inflicting harm.

Nanodiamonds and drug delivery

Much like trucks that make deliveries, artificial diamonds can deliver various medications to intended targets, and their distance and location may be controlled due to the minute size of the nanodiamonds. The approach to drug delivery using nanoparticles has already proven successful in previous research.

The nanodiamonds newly-developed at Bar-Ilan University have also been proven effective antioxidants. This property ensures that particles penetrating the body are both safe and therapeutic, as their chemical properties allow them to be coated with medication prior to their insertion into the body.

Tracking nanodiamonds through optics

The optical method developed by the research team enables them to identify relative nanodiamond concentrations of particles in the different layers of skin (epidermis, dermis and fat) through safe and non-invasive sensing based on a blue wavelength laser, a unique finding in itself given the fact that red wavelength lasers are generally used in human medical exams and treatments. To determine their location in the skin and in what concentration, patients are briefly exposed to the blue laser beam. An optical system creates a photograph-like 3D image through which optical changes in treated tissue can be extracted and compared to adjacent, untreated tissue using a specially-created algorithm.

"This is a significant development in dermatology and in optical engineering," says Prof. Dror Fixler, Director of the Institute of Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials at Bar-Ilan University and a member of the research team. "It could open the door to developing drugs applied through the skin alongside modern cosmetic preparations using advanced nanotechnology." Fixler's research, assisted by researcher Channa Shapira and others, demonstrates the importance of optical innovation in clinical application.

In blow for N.Y., Micron wants to build chip fab in Texas – Times Union

Posted: at 11:45 pm

ALBANY - Micron Technology, the largest U.S. memory chip manufacturer, appears to be leaning toward picking Texas for a massive $40 billion chip factory that Gov. Kathy Hochul has been trying to attract to the Empire State.

Micron filed an application earlier this week with officials in Texas requesting property tax breaks to build a massive memory chip factory outside of Austin.

The project would be built in phases, with 5,000 employees initially, although Micron has said it intends to spend more than $150 billion eventually to expand its manufacturing blueprint in the wake of the passage of the $52 billion CHIPS Act, a federal subsidy program designed to encourage expansion of the domestic chip manufacturing sector to counteract China's growing prowess in that market.

Hochul has been looking to capitalize on the new federal funding for chip fabs by creating a new tax incentive for chip companies that build in New York that would help the state's economic development office sweeten any potential offers to companies.

GlobalFoundries, which operates its Fab 8 chip factory in Saratoga County, has said it plans to build a second at the same site because of the CHIPS Act and Hochul's new tax breaks.

Although both Samsung and Intel, two of the world's largest chipmakers, decided not to build new factories in New York, it was believed that Micron was looking at a site outside of Syracuse based on comments Hochul made earlier this year.

Micron's corporate aircraft was also spotted at Albany International Airport earlier this month when both Hochul and U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer were in town for an event at Albany Nanotech.

Robert Maire, a semiconductor analyst based on Long Island, said that New York state hasn't had any major wins attracting new chip firms like Texas and even Ohio.

"I think we're just not that competitive," Maire said.

Empire State Development, Hochul's economic development arm, is still hoping to land a new chip factory upstate. The agency's spokeswoman Kristin Devoe said that "we have seen growing interest in semiconductor ready sites across the state" since the CHIPS Act passed.

Digital distribution key to fixing travel’s "weak link" – PhocusWire

Posted: at 11:44 pm

The digital transformation of ground transportation is under way, and as the world opens up again, the demand from travelers for a seamless ground transportation booking experience is growing.

But some suppliers are missing out on this market opportunity. If a bus operator does not have digital distribution capabilities it cannot sell its seats online. Without a brand dotcom or agreements with third parties such as OTAs or retail agents, a suppliers reach and revenue is limited to what it can sell locally, offline. Commercial partnerships with other travel providers such as airlines are not possible.

To change this, operators need a transport management system (TMS), which acts like an airlines Passenger Service System, storing all the operators available seats, prices and availability. This is a prerequisite to being able to make that inventory available for sale by OTAsand third-parties in a scalable way.

As things stand, ground transportation is fragmented. There are some big players on both the supply and distribution side but the vast majority of operators are small and independent. In fact, a vast majority of the businesses in APAC and LATAM are offline and analogue.

Travelers expect online capabilities and booking a bus ticket or ferry ride in advance should be as easy as booking a flight or a room. Until TMSs are more widely taken up by these small, independent businesses to make seats available online, ground transportation will remain the weak link in the travel ecosystem.

The ultimate travel tech goal of end-to-end/one-stop-shop/super-app remains elusive if the bus from the airport to the city center or the ferry to the boutique hotel has to be booked offline and in the moment.

Subscribe to our newsletter below

Solving this ongoing obstacle to seamless booking is one focus for TMS providers, but there is more that can be done. TMSs can help ground transportation suppliers to grow their business by transitioning many operational requirements from offline to online. These include: loyalty schemes and rewards, logistics, maintenance, vehicle readiness, mobile office, onboard sales, cargo pickup, staff schedules, route planning, yield management, financial reporting and last but certainly not least data and analytics.

The fragmented nature of the global ground transportation industry means that TMSs need to serve local market needs at the same time as connecting to global systems. There are layers of difference between countries in the same region, and even a single country operator might have different needs from its TMS for different routes. Similarly, operators will want their TMS to give them some degree of autonomy when it comes to third-party sales. The data and analytics functions, for example, can allow an operator to compare and contrast the value and volumes of tickets sold by their distribution partners.

The net result of bringing in a TMS is that operators can sell more seats to travelers, while travelers are likely to have a better experience because the business is run more efficiently. This will lead to higher standards across the industry and also give ground transportation the chance to share its sustainability credentials with a wider audience.

Looking ahead, there is potential for bus operators to position themselves as a more climate-friendly option than flying, but to do this effectively travelers need to be able to book online and to have the information needed at the point of sale. Elsewhere, ground transportation can encourage visitors to experience remote destinations, helping to address overtourism and to spread the economic benefits of tourism more widely.

For ground transportation to get the attention it deserves within the digital travel ecosystem, transport management systems will need to be center-stage. All these benefits the sector can bring to travelers are predicated on speeding up its digital transformation so that operators are more efficient and travelers are better served. With so much of bus and ferry business sector ripe for conversion, the TMS sector will be (the) one to watch.

SteveWillDoIt reveals YouTube removed his channel over gambling concerns – Dexerto

Posted: at 11:43 pm

Popular YouTuber SteveWillDoIt has revealed that YouTube removed his main channel after he promoted his second channel that he used to upload clips of his gambling.

On August 1, 2022, SteveWillDoIt revealed in an Instagram post that YouTube had permanently deleted his channel which had over four million subscribers.

The NELK Boys member uploaded a wide variety of videos spanning from comedy to philanthropic videos where Steve gave away hundreds and thousands of dollars to people.

Just two weeks later, the influencer claimed that his channel had zero community guideline strikes which are often required for the punishment to be elevated to the point of channel removal.

In the August 30 episode of Bradley Martyns Raw Talk, Steve revealed the reason behind the removal of his channel.

After explaining that YouTube didnt give him a heads up about the removal of his channel, Steve revealed that his second channel, where he posted gambling clips, had influenced its removal.

I had a second channel where we traveled to Mexico and I post gambling clips on my second channel, he explained. Youre allowed to show yourself playing Stake.com and post it on YouTube, and youre allowed to say Im playing on Stake right now.'

He went on to explain that if the full website domain is visible in the video, however, YouTube will remove the upload. Steve also revealed that due to not having the domain fully blurred on a video, his second channel was deleted.

Steve revealed that he made a new channel, and spoke to a YouTube rep to confirm that the removal wouldnt affect his main.

My mistake was that I went on my main channel, and promoted my second channel, he revealed. The whole issue I have with this is that theyre gonna delete my entire channel because stake.com [was visible on my second channel.]

(Topic starts at 1:28 in the video)

He went on to explain that if he knew not having Stake.com blurred on his video would result in his main channel being removed, he would have been more financially responsible.

Its unknown what Steve will do in the future now that his channels gone, so well have to wait to see what happens next.

Why do people pursue a job in the online gambling industry? – Onrec

Posted: at 11:43 pm

Needless to say, the gambling industry is one of the most attractive options out there. Once you take a look at the reviews you can read on Nostrabet.com, you will discover that there are hundreds of iGaming operators out there. The reviews will show you what to expect from them and will even highlight when some brands are looking for new employees.

While we are talking about employment and online gambling, we have to mention that this is among the fastest-growing industries in the world. The legal regulations in some countries allow gambling companies to offer their services. This means sites need more people to help them operate.

Lets go over some of the reasons why people would want to pursue a job in the online gambling industry.

One of the things that HRs do before they decide whether a given person is suitable for a specific position is to ask them about their expectations. Employees usually expect a high salary (more about that later), and security. The latter is often overlooked, but it is incredibly important in todays world when financial crises, pandemics, and wars are just around the corner.

Even though no one can predict the future and guarantee that a given job is safe, if we take a look at iGaming, we can assume that this industry is relatively secure. Aside from its massive growth in the last couple of years, many experts expect the business to become even more popular. This means that more gamblers will use these sites services.

The number of online casinos and bookmakers that go out of business is small compared to those that grow massively. After all, most of the old-school iGaming operators that are available in many countries have been around for years, and it seems like they are here to stay.

Lets face it, most employees dont care about anything else other than the amount of money they get. Some people are willing to put up with pretty much anything as long as they get more money at the of the month.

Although every gambling website is different, most of the top-rated sports betting platforms and online casinos know that offering a competitive salary will attract a lot of people, which is why most employees are happy with what they get. Of course, the amount of money they earn depends a lot on their positions. Unsurprisingly, managers make a lot more per month than those in the customer support industry.

Aside from the flat amount of money given each month, some companies offer intriguing bonus systems. Things like referral programs and revenue share are common in this business because they stimulate employees to be more productive.

The last reason why some people are willing to start working in an online betting industry is that it is challenging and interesting. As one of the fastest-growing businesses worldwide, people have to keep up with the latest trends and always implement hot options. This means the devs are always trying to come up with new games, whereas managers have to keep track of loads of additional aspects.

Although the term interesting is subjective, most people in the iGaming industry are also betting themselves. As you can imagine, it is exciting for some of them to learn what it is on the other side of the fence. Thats why they are more than happy when they have the chance to work for some of the top-rated online betting companies.

Keep in mind that some positions in online gambling are demanding, and you need a specific set of skills in order to work there. For example, being an iGaming developer is not easy because you also must adhere to various regulations.

Legal sports betting is just a few days away from becoming a reality in Kansas. Gamblers will start placing bets later this week.

It's a good bet that you've seen signs and advertisements that legal sports betting has arrived in Kansas.

"It starts off innocently," said addiction specialist Suzanne Taylor, of Midwest Recovery Centers.

Since legalizing sports betting, the area has been inundated with promises of free money, but Taylor said that free money can come with a huge cost.

"They say they are going to give you $200, and they know they are going to get you hooked. They absolutely know it," Taylor said.

The temptation will be even greater now that you can go to the casino to place bets or choose to gamble from home or anywhere else; it's as easy as a click or two on your cellphone.

"Casinos are extremely effective at what they do," she said.

Taylor said the lure of quick cash and the rush can lead to addiction.

"There are certain things that give us dumps of dopamine, and those sorts of things are substances because they actually change our brain chemistry to produce more dopamine and then gambling," she said.

Taylor said that the chemical rush tosses rational behavior out of the window and what is fun and recreation for some, turns into addiction for others.

"They saw there are three stages to addiction: Fun, fun with problems and then just problems," Taylor said.
