‘Supernatural’: Ex-Gay Hollywood Insider Becket Cook Reveals 2 Women Were Pivotal to His Salvation – CBN.com
Posted: August 25, 2022 at 1:58 pm
Former gay atheist Becket Cook is revealing new details about his remarkable testimony, showing how God can use anyone, anywhere to plant a seed that can lead others into the Kingdom of God.
'Surprising Encounter'
In a recent episode of "The Becket Cook Show", Becket introduces Joy Durham-Schafer, a Christian model, who was instrumental in his conversion to Christianity.
"On the set of a shoot in 2004, I heard that the model was a Christian. I thought it was gross," Becket explained. "Years later, after I came to faith in Christ, she and I had an incredibly surprising encounter."
Quick Start Podcast: Biden's Controversial Move to Transfer Student Debt
In his book, A Change of Affection: A Gay Man's Incredible Story of Redemption , he shares how he moved from Dallas, Texas to Hollywood and launched a successful career in show business.
"At this point in my life, I was very successful in my career as a set designer, production designer. I mean, I was doing covers for Vogue and for Harper's Bazaar. I worked with a lot of pop stars like Katy Perry and Paris Hilton and Oprah. Like, everyone you can imagine I worked with them. And I also started my own men's fashion line that was successful. Our clothes were in, you know, L.A., New York, Paris," he told CBN.
Despite all of his success, Becket said he still felt a deep emptiness.
"I went to all the shows. I went to all the after-parties. I was at this one after-party in Paris, and I remember, just everyone was there from the fashion world. I think Kanye was there that year, and I was kind of looking out over the crowd, it just struck me so profoundly. I was like, is that all there is to life? Just going to parties for the rest of my life, is this what it's all about? And I really started to panic that night. I was overwhelmed with a sense of emptiness."
During that time, Becket met Joy, a brand-new believer. On his show, he says her story of breaking off an engagement with a non-believer became a "seed" that would help turn him from a practical atheist to a believer.
"It was literally the first time I had met a Christian in Los Angeles," Becket recounts. "That was kind of a turning point for me because I remember you and Frankie started dating and then you got to a point where you were like 'he's not a believer, this can't go anywhere else'. And you made a really tough decision to break up with him."
"It really touched me and kind of freaked me out in a way," Becket continued. "[Frankie]told me the story of you breaking up with him and he said you collapsed on the floor and you were weeping. And he went to hug you and he said he could feel like the Holy Spirit on you. He sensed something supernatural was going on."
"It was a frequency and a vibration of the Spirit moving and indwelling in me," Joy explained. "I was so completely transformed. I didn't even know who I was anymore."
"I remember when he told me that story it was, maybe, the first spark of me thinking... 'There must be something real to this kind of Christianity-thing.' ...It definitely planted a seed in me."
But that is not the only "seed" God used that ultimately led Becket to turn his life over to Jesus and leave his gay lifestyle.
'Desperate Prayers of Petition'
Ten years before meeting Joy, his sister-in-law, Kim Cook, felt a burden to pray for his salvation.
"I was doing a Bible study on Revelation and...that all of a sudden became my concern that if the rapture happens, you are not going to go," she recounted. "I just remember being so burdened that you would not be in eternity with me."
Kim says the Lord gave her Acts 16:18 as the scripture to stand on for Becket's salvation.
"'Lord please just save him,'" she had prayed. Appearing in a separate episode of his YouTube show, Kim explained, "I really wasn't worried about you being gay. I just wanted you saved, and then let God deal with that when the time came."
"God wants us to come with those desperate prayers of petition and bear everything to him," she continued. "And then let him go to work...and then I have to trust [His]timing."
"Your battles are won by being on your knees," she added.
Becket gave his life to the Lord at a Hollywood church on September 9, 2005.
"It was like the road to Damascus moment," he told CBN's Faithwire. "God's like 'I'm real. Jesus is my Son. He's real. Heaven's real, hell is real. You are now adopted into my Kingdom. You are my child now.' And I was so blown away I couldn't stop crying for the rest of the time. I was crying because of two things: the joy of meeting God, and my sin. It was my most intense cry since I was an infant."
Grace and Redemption
Cook said at that moment he knew who he was, and being gay was not part of his identity.
Becket asked Kim how she would encourage Christian parents and grandparents believing for the salvation of a loved one who is living an LGBT lifestyle.
"The most important thing that we have to do is love, and we have to have grace," she replied. "You have to have truth, but I think the grace has got to be before the truth and that love."
"Embrace prayer, do not turn your back, and keep loving them," she continued.
Becket believes God is the ultimate writer of his redemption story, but he credits believers, like Joy and Kim, as being instrumental in opening his heart to the Lord.
"God is sovereign over all of it," he shared during his podcast. "If you can rest in God's sovereignty and know that it is his timing. It's his will."
"You can't bludgeon or badger somebody into the kingdom of God," he added. "It's God's work. It's a supernatural act from God."

Perhaps the strongest antidote for optimism or for misplaced faith in our fellow man is watching the news. Of course, much of the media we consume is voyeuristic, so in a sort of supply-and-demand scenario, bad news makes headlines more than good news. At the same time, this is more than a problem of clickbait filling our newsfeeds. A series of events in recent years suggests that our cultural center cannot hold much longer.
Not decades but just a few days ago, prominent novelist Salman Rushdie was stabbed, not in some shady part of the world, but in public at a lecture in upstate New York. Also, dogs in San Francisco are becoming hooked on meth. Apparently, human excrement is so common in public areas, pets have learned where to go for a quick high from the residue of addicted residents.Radical ideologies continue to dominate headlines, which few outside of ivory towershad heard of until a few years ago. They are now compulsory at some schools. And, those who challenge the new orthodoxy are oftenostracized from what is an increasingly impolite society.Healthcare now involves practices that, until yesterday, wouldve rightly been considered abuse, including children having otherwise healthy organs turned inside out.
Clearly, the state of our world is largely rotten. For some Christians, this indicates that the end is nigh. Particularly in the last century or so, many books and sermons have declared that we are living in the last days, so the best we can hope for is to go down fighting this increasingly fallen world.
Its easy to forget in all these headlines that things have been bad before, in some ways even worse than today. In that time and place, God called His people to keep the faith, commit to the tasks at hand, and steward the time they were given by remaining faithful. Sometimes they won against the forces of darkness and death. Sometimes they lost. Either way, their calling remained the same, and Gods Kingdom marched on.
William Wilberforce was among those followers of Christ who faced down great obstacles. He deserves all of the recognition he receives as an archetype for faithful Christian engagement in the world. Eventually, because of his efforts, he won a long battle over the entrenched power of slavery in the British Empire, what he called one of the great aims that God had set before Him. But none of it happened in a day.
Wilberforce began his fight against human bondage in the late 1780s, but he did not see the fruit of his work for decades. The slave trade wasnt banned until 1807 across the British Empire and was not fully brought to an end until 1833, just days before he died. How often must he have wondered at his impossible task? How often did he consider giving up?
Closer to our own time and less well known is a story out of Russia. Detailed in a new book by Matthew Heise, The Gates of Hell: An Untold Story of Faith and Perseverance in the Early Soviet Union tells of the trials of Lutheran Christians living under the newly founded Communist tyranny. The book is encouraging and heartbreaking at the same time. The constant determination of these Christians to be faithful to their Lord in the midst of some of the 20thcenturys most intense persecution is encouraging. Yet, by all earthly terms, their resistance absolutely failed. They fought to retain their freedom and their faith, but few managed to even retain their lives.
They had no way to know their storys endthat all were wiped out by atheist totalitarianism. Regardless, they were faithful to the end.
Our task is no different. We dont know if ours is a Wilberforce moment, when the enduring faithfulness of Gods people standing athwart the tides of history will push this world back to reality. Or if this is a Russian Lutheran moment: We will lose our lives in our quest to be faithful. What we do know is that Christ has called us to this time and this place. As Gandalf said to Frodo, when he wondered why he should have to live in such times, beingmeantto be here and now is a very encouraging thought.
So, whatever comes, great victories or the full evaporation of progress, our task is the same: faithfulness, not success.

FanDuel Readies Launch of Cable Network Focused on Sports Betting – Variety
Posted: at 1:57 pm
Kay Adams is getting ready to roll the dice on a new opportunity.
The former NFL Network host is launching a new morning program that will rely heavily on chatter about betting, all on a cable network operated by one of the biggest facilitators of betting in the business: FanDuel. She might talk about the over and under on her getting a speeding ticket in Los Angeles or on the types of things that might show up in HBOs new House of Dragons series. But she also stands ready to mix it up with knowledgeable guests and experts on odds making and wagering on upcoming sports games.
Betting on sports is a part of our game. Its the future of the industry, says Adams. I want to be on the right side of that.
Her new show will serve as one of the signature offerings of FanDuel TV, the launch of which represents the first foray by one of the industrys major legalized sportsbook operators into the media business. To be sure, ESPN2 features a regular show about betting, The Daily Wager. DraftKings, one of FanDuels biggest rivals, produces a series of podcasts. And Caesars Entertainment struck a deal in June with Peyton Mannings Omaha Productions to produce podcast and digital series.
But none of them operate a 24-hour TV schedule. FanDuel is betting on the power of linear TV (with broadband accompaniment) at a time when that business has more skeptics than in the past. General-entertainment and sports outlets that rely on cable for distribution have seen their subscribers drop and audiences dwindle and more consumers move to streaming venues to watch their favorite programming.
FanDuel launches its network amid a push to legalize certain types of gambling across the nation. The market for legal sports betting is seen as growing from $4.3 billion in 2021 to $19.7 billion in 2026, according to estimates from Ellers & Krejcik, a market-research firm. Already, 36 states allow legal betting, with 58% of the adult U.S. population residing in one of those states. Advertisers who want to lure the gambling crowd could make use of a national media outlet that caters to them.
As digital companies win sports rights, they are making the games more interactive. Amazons Prime Video, for example, will surround its Thursday Night Football streamcasts with alternate fees and the chance to explore stats and highlights, all with the click of a button.
FanDuel isnt starting from scratch. It has owned the TVG cable network largely focused on horse-racing and once part of TV Guide Inc. for years, part of an acquisition made by a predecessor company. But its efforts might just create, if not the next ESPN or Fox Sports, then certainly the next ESPN or Fox Sports of sports betting.
I am rebuilding TVG as FanDuel TV to be the first network built from the ground up that is designed to be watched with a phone in your hand, says Mike Raffensperger, FanDuels chief commercial officer, in an interview. Every single frame on the screen will have something you can interact with.
Both FanDuel and its broadband counterpart FanDuel+ will go live in September. Adams new 11 a.m. weekday program isnt the only offering. Pat McAfee PMI Network will produce content that will be used in FanDuel TVs weekly block of programming. The Ringer, the sports and culture hub backed by Bill Simmons, will provide material from its podcasts and digital networks. More Ways to Win, hosted by former ESPN anchor Lisa Kerney, will continue to run on the network. FanDuel TV will also showcase international basketball thanks to a new licensing agreement with Sportradrar that will give it more than 3,000 hours of live international sports to show And FanDuel TV will continue to highlight horse-racing coverage that has long been available on TVG.
FanDuel hopes to break the mold, says Raffensperger. The world does not need more very analytic, pick-based touts of the Xs and Os of gambling. There is a lot of that out there, and frankly, I dont think it can always be that interesting, he says. Im interested in creating something that features voices like Kays that are unique, authentic and have real engagement with their audience, and can thread gaming into broader editorial narratives in sports and culture.
Adams, the sportscaster, expects to talk to a new type of sports audience, one that plans on interacting with the games they see rather than passively taking them in. To me, success on this show will be building a community that is ready for the future of what sports content looks like, she adds.

Handful of companies express interest in Mass. sports betting license – Axios
Posted: at 1:57 pm
At least half a dozen companies have formally expressed interest in a Massachusetts sports betting license since regulators started soliciting information last week.
Driving the news: Six companies have submitted notices of intent to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission as of Tuesday, spokesperson Thomas Mills told Axios.
Yes, but: The new market won't take off until the commission finalizes regulations and issues licenses to prospective operators, which must be vetted.
DraftKings: The Boston-based sports book pushed state legislators for years to legalize sports betting in Massachusetts.
GAN Nevada: GAN is a Las-Vegas-based online gaming software company. It's worked with Station Casinos, a hotel-casino company, to help develop a "one-stop shop" for retail and online sports betting throughout Nevada.
WynnBet: The sports betting arm of Wynn Resorts, the parent company of Encore Boston Harbor.
Fanatics: The Florida-based sports merchandising company started expanding into online sports betting last year, hiring FanDuel CEO Matt King to lead the company's gaming venture.
PointsBet: The New-Jersey-based online sports book operates in 11 states.
Massasoit Greyhound Association, aka Raynham Park: Raynham Park's representatives told regulators weeks ago that they wanted to throw their name into the mix.

Sports betting in Georgia: When it will be legalized, how to bet online, where to find picks, solid promos – CBS Sports
Posted: at 1:57 pm
Georgia sports fans shouldn't have to wait too much longer to join in on the legal online sports betting craze that is sweeping the country. Efforts to get a measure on the 2022 ballot regarding legal Georgia sports betting were unsuccessful, but it's believed those efforts will be renewed in 2023. Since the Peach State is passionate about its sports teams, there is no doubt that Georgia mobile sports betting will be very successful. The question is when sports betting in Georgia will become a reality.
If Georgia sportsbooks get the green light, the latest Georgia sports book deposit promo and Georgia sports book promo code could be a big hit with first-time bettors. Now is the perfect time to brush up on sports betting terminology with this helpful guide from SportsLine so you can wager like a pro if Georgia legalizes online sports betting.
There are several ways you can make sports wagers both online and in retail sportsbooks and plenty of bet types you'll want to familiarize yourself with.
Money line: Georgia's pro baseball team is gearing up for another deep playoff run, so fans would be placing money line bets to get in on the action. If Atlanta is a -200 favorite, you'd need to bet $200 to return $100 on that side to win. If Atlanta is a +200 underdog, that side would return $200 on a $100 bet if it wins.
Against the spread: You can't bet on football without first knowing what a spread bet is. If Atlanta is a 7.5-point favorite against New Orleans, that side must win by eight points or more to cover the spread. New Orleans can cover the spread by winning outright or losing by seven or fewer to cover.
Parlay: A parlay bet is when two or more bets are included in one wager, so there is both greater risk and higher reward. If you bet $100 on a four-team parlay at 11-1 odds, that bet could win $1,100 if all four sides win.
If you're looking for the best values on the board in Georgia or elsewhere, be sure to check out SportsLine, which specializes in Vegas picks, DFS advice and season-long fantasy sports projections.
An industry leader, SportsLine.com provides advanced computer modeling, expert picks, news and analysis of all the biggest events in sports. It can help you identify in which games you'll have the biggest statistical advantage. Plus, you'll get access to a team of over 40 experts.

Glossary of common sports betting terms: Parlay, against the spread, money line, prop bet explained – CBS Sports
Posted: at 1:57 pm
Online sports betting is now legal in more than 30 states and more sports fans than ever will wager on their favorite teams. Pro baseball gets ready for the postseason while football, basketball and hockey all get their new seasons underway. With more opportunities than ever to try out legal sports betting, it's important to know some basic sports betting terms and sports betting lingo. To get you prepped for placing your first wager, we have put together a quick and helpful guide so you can place your first legal sports bet like a pro.
At Caesars Sportsbook, there are more ways to play than ever. In fact, if you are a new registrant who is 21+ and located in an eligible state (AZ, CO, DC, IA, IN, LA, MI, NJ, NY, TN, VA, and WV)*, you can register, deposit, and get your first bet up to $1,250 on Caesarswith the code GAMEFULLC. If your bet doesn't hit, don't worry. Caesars will give you a single free bet credit you can use within 14 days. (Terms and conditions apply. See details here. Offer expires 11/1/2022). All told, there are plenty of ways to take advantage of your sports book deposit offer.
Before you play, make sure you know the common betting terms you'll see. There are dozens of ways to bet on sports, and this handy sports betting guide can help you figure out what some of the most popular sports betting terminology means.
Money line: Baseball is the main focus in the sports world right now, and the most popular way to bet on it is with a money line bet. If New York is a -250 favorite, a $250 bet can return $100 if they win. If Boston is a +260 underdog, a $100 bet could return $260.
Live betting: You haven't missed the chance to place a bet if a game has already started. Sportsbooks adjust certain odds as a game unfolds so you can place your bets in real-time. You can even wager on the outcome of the next at-bat in a big baseball game.
Prop bet: Try placing a prop bet if you're looking to wager on something other than the final score of a game. Popular prop bets across the major sports include how many strikeouts a pitcher throws and how many rebounds a basketball player tallies.
Against the spread: Gear up for football season by learning how to place a spread bet. If New York is a 7.5-point favorite against New England, that side must win by eight points or more to cover the spread. New England can cover the spread by winning outright or losing by seven points or fewer.
Outright: This is the easiest betting method and can be used across all major sports because it requires you to pick one player to win an entire sporting event. Outright bets are very popular when wagering on pro golf, which has a major tournament this weekend.
Parlay: With a parlay bet, you can wager on multiple teams and even on multiple sports with one bet. This betting style is risky because all sides have to win or else the bet is a loser. But if all sides win, the reward is much higher.
Teaser: This method pays lower odds than a parlay, but remains popular because handicappers still find them profitable. If you don't love a particular spread or spreads being offered, a teaser allows you to buy a certain amount of points in either direction to increase the likelihood of you hitting your bet. Let's say you believe two seven-point favorites will win their games outright but you are unsure whether they can cover the touchdown spread. Using a six-point teaser would reduce each team to a -1 favorite, meaning they only have to win by two points. This reduces the payout but deployed correctly, it can be a profitable strategy.
Push:This is when neither team can cover the spread because there is a tie. If Kansas City closes as a three-point favorite against Las Vegas and wins the game 27-24, neither team covers the spread and all bets are returned.
Over-under: This is an easy way to wager on sports with high score totals, so it's perfect if you want to bet on basketball. Sportsbooks will predict the final total of the teams' combined points and you simply pick whether you think the final total will be over or under the sportsbook's number.

Sports betting in North Carolina: When it will be legalized, how to bet online, where to see picks and promos – CBS Sports

North Carolinians love their sports teams, so state legislatures are doing their due diligence to make sure legal North Carolina sports betting will work in their state. Legislatures voted down a bill this spring that would have made North Carolina mobile sports betting legal but would have banned betting on college sports. Since college sports is such a major piece of the North Carolina sports landscape, the best solution was to wait and come up with a different bill that will include betting on college sports. A new bill to legalize sports betting in North Carolina will likely be voted on in 2023, bringing North Carolinians closer to their favorite sports and teams.
Once North Carolina online sports betting is legalized, sports fans across the state will be able to wager on their favorite sports and teams from the comfort of their own homes. That means the latest North Carolina sports book promo code and North Carolina sports book bonus code could be very popular. If you haven't tried sports betting before and want to be familiar with the terms, check out this helpful guide from our friends at SportsLine to some see of the most popular ways to wager.
There are several ways you can make sports wagers both online and in retail sportsbooks and plenty of bet types you'll want to familiarize yourself with. Here are just a few.
Against the spread: Football is the most popular sport in the country, so of course placing a spread bet on games is big in the sports betting world. If Carolina is a 7.5-point favorite in a game against Atlanta, that side must win by eight points or more to cover the spread. Atlanta can cover in that game by winning outright or losing by seven points or fewer.
Over-Under: The Tar Heel State loves its basketball, so over-under bets will be very popular as well. If the over-under for a game between Charlotte and Miami at 200, you would wager whether you think the total of both teams' final scores will be over or under that number.
Prop bet: If you are looking to bet on something other than the final score of a game, prop bets are perfect for you. Popular props include how many rebounds a basketball player will have or how many touchdown passes a quarterback will throw.

Mountain West Sports Betting Guide Week 0 – Mountain West Connection
Posted: at 1:57 pm
College footballs week zero is now less than two days away, and fall camps for the Mountain West teams who will compete in the August 27 slate of games are wrapped up. While the depth charts will continue to shake out over the next few weeks, it is a great time to dive into the betting opportunities that exist for these games.
Betting on the first games of the season can be seen as a double-edged sword: On one hand, there can be a lot of shakeup through player attrition or coaching changes (hello Nevada and Hawaii), which makes it difficult to use any type of historical data to factor into your wagers.
On the other hand the fog of uncertainty that the general public sees can be a huge advantage to bettors with close knowledge of the team. Those close to Utah State last year, for example, were keen to bet the over 3.5 on the season win total based on observations from fall camp and the clear impact transfers would have on the field.
So here at Mountain West Connection, each week this season I will dive into the betting trends and data around each Mountain West matchup, and help identify whether there are ripe opportunities for the Mountain West fan to make some money. With odds and trends provided by DraftKings, I will share my perspective, call out the weeks best bets, and keep track of the success of my recommendations over the course of the season.
Before we dive in, though, it is important to note that this analysis is for informational purposes only and only you are responsible for any wagers you ultimately place. All odds current as of the evening of 8/22 and subject to change.
Please note: DraftKings does not provide betting lines for games against FCS teams (for example, UNLV vs. Idaho State)
As I mentioned, first games can be hard to predict when new coaches are helming a program, and this game gives us two new head coaches, with Ken Wilson leading the Wolf Pack and Jerry Kill taking over a New Mexico State program that has had almost everything going against it for seemingly two decades now.
But things are looking up in Las Cruces, and Jerry Kill is a terrific coach, and will look to implement a strong running offense that will get a good opportunity to test itself against a Nevada defense that lost a lot of talent.
Both programs were respectable against the point spread last season (8-5 for Nevada, 7-5 for NMSU), but this is one of those areas where it is hard to put a lot of faith in recent history given the personnel turnover.
What I love, though, is the Over 50.5. And when I say this let me disclose that I originally wrote this column two weeks ago when the o/u was at 55, and I loved it then. The game total has steadily dropped so if it remains in the 50.5-52.5 area, I would recommend pouncing on it. I think a lot of points will be scored in this game.
For what it is worth, these two teams met in Reno last season with Nevada winning 55-28. New Mexico State covered the 28.5 spread and the game total sailed over the line of 65.
I mentioned I originally wrote this two weeks ago and have updated with the latest odds. The game line has moved in Nevadas favor over the last 14 days, dropping from Nevada -11 to -9. My recommendation is the stay off the line at this point. I liked NMSU +11 as a casual play, but at +9, it is best to be avoided by any except the most aggressive player.
THE PICK: Over 50.5 - 2 units
UConn has been a beyond awful program for a decade now, and the hope in Storrs is that hiring Jim Mora Jr. as head coach will defibrillate the program whose sole win last season was a six-point victory over Yale.
Utah State, meanwhile, enters the 2022 season with extremely high expectations for themselves after a magical 11-3 season, which included its first-ever Mountain West Championship, a bowl win over Oregon State, and another long-overdue road win against a Power 5 team in the season opener at Washington State.
In addition to finding a lot of success on the field last season, the Aggies provided those who bet on them a high return, going 10-4 ATS. Utah State may see such favorable spreads from bookmakers this season though given last years impressive performance, and the first evidence we see of that is the 28-points theyll be asked to cover on what should be a brutally hot Saturday afternoon in Logan.
There hasnt been much line movement in this contest with the total only dropping from 60.5 to 60 and the line moving from 28 to 27.
Its a virtual guarantee that Utah State will win this game but last seasons lack of dominance at home last season (3-3 record, with losses to BYU, Boise State and Wyoming, a two-point squeaker over Colorado State and 20- and 24-point wins over Hawaii and North Dakota respectively) gives me pause about recommending touching the Aggies -27.
Massey Ratings has this game pegged as a 35-17 win for Utah State, reinforcing my fear of the spread. There is likely some value in the under, with 60.5 being the highest game total of Week Zero. If you need to have money on this game to feel an interest, the under is the way to go. My original recommendation here was going to be a small parlay of UConn +28 and Over 60.5, but the uncertainty of the UConn QB situation (they will not name a starter until gametime), some drama with the Huskies defensive coordinator taking a leave of absence, and the general vibe out of Logan that the Aggies are locked in has me recommending to not bet against the Aggies.
If you must wager on this game, take the over and cheer for a rout.
THE PICK: Over 60 - 1 unit
Most Mountain West fans know that Wyoming was hit hard by the Transfer Portal on both sides of the ball, so opening the 2022 campaign on the road as underdogs doesnt give a lot of hope of things getting off to a happy start, but will there be an opportunity to emotionally hedge the game for Cowboy fans?
Lets start with the game total, which at 44 is the lowest game total by 6.5 points of the seven bettable games on DraftKings board. Why is the total so low? First, Illinoiss offense is bad, coming off a 2021 season where they were 115th in the nation in total scoring and 112th in total offense. Wyoming, on the flip side, has lots of uncertainty with new personnel, having lost offensive weapons Isaiah Neyor and Xazavian Valladay to the Portal, and with former Utah State backup QB Andrew Peasley leading the charge.
This is Brett Bielemas second year at the helm of Illinois and we can expect to see some improvement from his squad, so I have little doubt that Illinois will win this game, and am reasonably confident they will cover the spread of 10. If you see the spread drop below 10, I recommend taking a good look at Illinois. One thing to note is that even with last years disappointing season, Illinois was 8-4 ATS (versus Wyomings 5-7-1 record.)
As for the game total I actually like under 44. Ive always felt that this low game totals are thrown out to bettors like candy and the bookmakers want to tempt people to believe the total is so low, it only makes sense to bet the over. You will see two teams struggle to score in this game and if youre brave enough to bet the under, you will be rewarded.
THE PICK: Under 44 - 1 unit
With Rainbow Warrior QB legend Timmy Chang taking over the Hawaii program, things can only be looking up for a team that has been gutted on the islands. Will Coach Change get things off to an exciting start by defeating an SEC team?
When that SEC team is Vanderbilt, theres a chance, and a chance is all Hawaii needs.
If Hawaii is to win, it will be the offense that gets the job done as last years conference-worst defense will continue to have a lot of questions. Assuming Brayden Schager leads the Hawaii offense, he will have some good targets available to him and the passing game which there will be a lot of should be a highlight for Hawaii, assuming the offensive line gels and gives the QB time to let plays develop.
Vanderbilt listen, this is just flat out a brutal bit of traveling for a team that went 2-10 last year (a two-point win over an awful UConn team and a three-point win as six-point underdogs at Colorado State).
I dont quite understand how Hawaii is such a big underdog here other than the turmoil surrounding the program turmoil that I think a lot of us who follow the Mountain West believe that Timmy Chang will expedite getting the program through.
With Hawaii, throw last years ATS stats out the window (they were 6-6) and get ready to have some fun. I think Hawaii will win this game outright, so if youre looking to more than double your money before the season even gets going, you have the +260 moneyline available to you. But with that said, Hawaii +6.5 feels like a great wager, and I was delighted to see that the Ken Massey ratings agree, with Hawaii predicted as a 30-28 winner in the Massey system. Theres a lot of value here and I recommend going two units on the Rainbow Warriors. (Note: When I originally wrote the column, I loved Hawaii at +6.5, and the line moved between Tuesday and Thursday to +8.5. Hammer it.)
THE PICK: Hawaii +8.5 - 2 units
Part of the fun of this column this season will be tracking my success. If I fare poorly, you can rest assured I will retire from giving advice.

Kansas to kick off sports betting in September – The Derby Informer
Posted: at 1:57 pm
People in Kansas can start legally betting on sports Sept. 1, with gambling beginning in time for the start of football season.
On Aug. 18, Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly announced the states four state-owned casinos can begin accepting wagers on Sept. 1 as part of a soft launch of the new gambling method.
The Kansas City Chiefs season-opening game is Sept. 11.
I want to thank all our partners for working with us to get this done in time for football season, Kelly said in a news release.
The start date comes months after a new law went into effect July 1 allowing people over the age of 21 to bet on sports. Kelly signed the bill into law in May. Kansas lawmakers narrowly approved the bill this year after close, late-night votes in both the House and Senate in April.
The start of betting was delayed because the Kansas Lottery needed to finalize regulations, including creating a specific process for casinos to apply to offer sports gambling in certain ways, such as through a smartphone app.
The four casinos are Boot Hill Casino and Resort near Dodge City, Kansas Star Casino in Mulvane, Kansas Crossing Casino and Hotel in Pittsburg and Hollywood Casino at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Kan. Boot Hill Casino previously announced it has partnered with national gambling apps DraftKings and Ballys Corporation to provide online sports betting in Kansas.
Republican Sen. Rob Olson said in May he was excited to finally legalize it because many Kansans wanted it.
Its something that Kansans are already doing, and it will bring additional tax revenue to our state to help with our needs, Olson said. My constituents have pushed for this legislation for years, and now, the next time we have a significant sporting event in our state, Kansans will be able to bet on their hometown team.
The Kansas Lottery will outsource the sports gambling operations to the casinos in Kansas. Those casinos will be allowed to launch online and in-person betting operations.
Bettors will need to be within the state of Kansas to place a wager.
Sports teams and events may also allow for gambling at stadiums if they enter a marketing agreement with the casinos. Lawmakers specifically noted Sporting Kansas Citys Childrens Mercy Park and the Kansas Speedway which are both located near Hollywood Casino as candidates.
Kelly noted that even restaurants would be able to offer sports gambling.
The new venture will also bring in some money to the state government. The Kansas Lottery estimates taxes on legal sports betting would total up to $10 million a year by 2025.
But a sports betting expert said that figure may be low. Brandt Iden, a former Michigan state lawmaker who helped legalize sports gambling there, said that the Kansas estimate doesnt take out-of-state bets into account.
While Kansas passed a new law, its next door neighbor in Missouri failed to do the same. Iden said that means Kansas will still have a head start on Missouri.
Youre going to be able to have these folks that are just going to come over the border to place their wagers, Iden said. Weve seen that traditionally across the country.
