How Caesars Created The Emperor’s Sports Betting Groove – Sports Handle
Posted: August 22, 2022 at 11:52 pm
Storytelling, when done right, sells.
In the sports wagering space, ad spend is scrutinized because, other than revenue, customer acquisition cost is the financial metric arguably most obsessed over by operators. If an operator keeps ad spend in check, it offers the chance to increase profit margin.
There is no tried and true method for mobile advertising campaigns. After all, the publics taste is as fickle as the weather. Todays great-tasting chocolate ice cream may be tomorrows bland vanilla.
Some operators have large ad budgets to saturate radio and TV airwaves for an impending launch market. Some opt for name recognition and put athletes and celebrities front and center. Some have substantial social media reach, providing an upstart feel that resonates with certain demographics.
Caesars Sportsbook launched its We are all Caesars ad campaign slightly more than a year ago Aug. 2 marked the first anniversary of the first 30-second spot following its rebrand from William Hill. With actor/comedian J.B. Smoove starring as Caesar, the ads provided instant and lasting brand recognition for Caesars Sportsbook. The Caesars universe has expanded in ensuing seasons to include Academy Award-winning actress Halle Barry as Cleopatra and the Manning family of quarterbacks, Archie, Peyton, and Eli and non-QB Cooper.
The ad campaign is firing on all cylinders in starting its second year, with Cooper taking center stage in the debut of Season 4 unveiled Friday. But getting to this point required a sprint to launch that Caesars CMO of Digital Sharon Otterman recounted at last months SBC Summit in New Jersey and elaborated on further during interviews with Sports Handle.
Otterman did not get the chance to directly interact with Caesars until April 2021, following the completion of its acquisition of William Hill, since rules do not permit American and British-owned companies in potential mergers to talk. Otterman was coming to Caesars from William Hill, which was still better known for being Englands top sportsbook than as an entrant in the nascent U.S. marketplace.
We had just launched the William Hill brand, so we were like, Whew, we launched a brand! and now were like, Great! she said sarcastically of the takeover timing.
During the SBC Summit, Otterman compared the compressed timetable of 99 days for the Caesars rebrand to her once-favorite television show 24, complete with the metallic clock-ticking sound that drove home the urgency of the situation. Lacking direct access to Caesars, Otterman focused her team on consumer interaction to gauge the strength of the Caesars brand.
We did spend a lot of the time prior doing the research without being able to talk to Caesars during that acquisition period, she explained. Its a blank slate. Were launching a new sportsbook, what are all the things we wanted to learn from the brand and the consumer so that when we did get acquired, the last piece of the puzzle internally was what was the mission and the vision, and how do we bridge all that together?
What they learned was sobering. Caesars casino brand and brick-and-mortar sportsbook were known; Caesars online sports wagering product was anything but. Surveys revealed a 2% unaided brand awareness, which caught Otterman off-guard.
It really is one of those moments of holy s**t,' she said. As a consumer that lives in New York, goes to Atlantic City, I love betting on sports and gambling, I always revered the Caesars brand, loved the days of Muhammad Ali and Evel Knievel. It was so jarring to see in this space that we werent considered.
That limited awareness, though, also brought a silver lining. Otterman noted her team went from, Oh my god, Im nauseous, to a sense of oh my god, I can get this goal, because all I have to do is make you aware. The data didnt come back and say We cant picture Caesars being there. It was we werent top of mind because we werent there.
Otterman leaned on Caesars history when it came to brand positioning. She recalled the days of founder Jay Sarno, who opened Caesars Palace in Las Vegas in 1966 and deliberately left the apostrophe off Caesars because he wanted the venue to be everyones palace.
The idea of We are all Caesars was born, and Otterman recounted staff high-fiving and deploying road shows to getting everyone aligned. They recruited Smoove, whom Otterman labeled the perfect person for our Caesar and one of the hardest-working guys in show business. The challenge then became finding an agency that could turn around the concept in 66 days.
Enter Ten6, a relatively small London-based ad agency. Otterman had known founder and CEO Spence Kramer from their ESPN days in the early 2000s. Otterman had concerns that the project could be too much for Ten6 on such a tight schedule, but Kramer put those fears to rest during an unconventional agency pitch, which came minutes after the ceremonial ribbon cutting for Caesars sportsbook at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., in late May.
We had the insane notion, considering that Caesars had virtually no time between the pitch and trying to launch, to actually bring the head of the production company to the pitches, as if to say, If you like our work, we can be in production by the end of this week,' Kramer said in a recorded segment shown at the SBC Summit. The combination of our hunger, a pretty good idea, and the idea that we were practically in production once the creative got greenlit made for a very interesting and, thankfully, successful pitch.
That was the story, and were thrilled to continue working with Caesars Sportsbook to this day.
There were other moves Otterman and her team made ahead of the initial ad launch to promote brand awareness. You might have seen them if your state has legal sports wagering: Uber cars wrapped with chariot skins, goblets for use at Caesars brick-and-mortar locations, re-skinning the mobile app to tie in the Caesars Rewards program, NFL jersey promotions. All of this came about, as Otterman noted, because of the power of having all the employees really understand the brand positioning because we could go parallel paths and help build the brand.
The We are all Caesars campaign launched successfully and did its job in raising brand awareness, with subsequent spots sustaining the created momentum. That proved crucial because Caesars aggressively went into New York with deep pockets for ad spend and the most audacious launch promotion of any sportsbook, matching initial deposits up to $3,000. That haymaker combination continues to have aftereffects, as Caesars Sportsbook is a clear No. 3 in the Empire State, behind only titans FanDuel and DraftKings.
With new ads there will be four for this season come new challenges. Caesars will be cutting back on national ad spend as the NFL season start looms, instead looking to target specific markets. One focus likely will be Ohio, which is expected to have a universal Jan. 1 launch.
Caesars Sportsbook has positioned itself to be a prime player, and its emperors tales have been a vital part of that positioning. Otterman does not expect that to change simply because the medium conveying the message may change from traditional media to newer forms of social media.
We know we can be very, very efficient about getting a clear narrative across, she said. And when youre spending less dollars in media and youre segmenting more and targeting more, you have to be more precise in your messaging. Now that weve built and introduced this story, its much easier to get a little bit more specific and deep down into the story line.

Michigan Sports Betting Slows in July, but Books Reap More Revenue – Covers

Baseball alone just isnt cutting it for Michigan sportsbooks, although operators in the state are churning out a solid amount of revenue from a weaker level of wagering.
Numbers recently released by the Michigan Gaming Control Board show the state's retail books and online sports betting websites took almost $225 million in bets during July, down around 23% compared to Junes $292.4 million in wagering.
Online sports betting accounted for $206.1 million of Julys total, with about $18.9 million in wagering at Detroits three downtown casinos making up the remainder of the handle.
The weaker wagering for the month has been par for the course in July for every state with some form of legal sports betting. No NFL football and no more playoffs for the NBA and NHL left bettors with MLB and less-popular sports, which wasnt enough to drive an increase in handle.
Still, gross sports betting revenue last month in Michigan was about $22.9 million, giving operators a hold of almost 10.2% for July. Both figures were greater than Junes take for the books, when operators registered gross revenue of about $15.9 million and a win rate of 5.4%.
The leading online sportsbook for the month by handle was FanDuel, which took $60.1 million in bets. Second was DraftKings, with $57.5 million in wagering, and then BetMGM, with about $44.6 million in handle. The busiest retail sportsbook in the state last month was the Barstool Sportsbook at Greektown Casino, which took $9.6 million in wagers.
Fifteen online sportsbooks were licensed to do business in Michigan during July. After deducting around $7.6 million in free bets and other promotions, mobile operators owed $815,409 in taxes for the action they took during the month.

MLB Picks Tonight: Expert MLB Bets and Player Props for Monday, August 22 – RotoWire

This article is part of our MLB Picks series.
RotoWire.com's Kevin Payne has dug into thebest sports betting sitesacross the country to identify his MLB bets and MLB player props to target today.
Ugh, I'm coming off a 0-3 week and it was really unlucky taking a look at the numbers. I went over with Joe Musgrove at 5.5 strikeouts and of course, he got stuck on five. Josiah Gray went over 16.5 outs by one out and the game between the rookies saw 12 runs, just none of them were in the first inning. However, this happens and easily that week could be 3-0 and I'd be here beating my chest if that happened. But a loss is a loss and it's a new Monday. By the slimmest of margins I still have a winning record on the season so let's see if we can put some space between the wins and losses.

Cincinnati Reds at Philadelphia Phillies
The Reds are going to give Luis Cessa a shot at starting and there's little chance he last more than four innings. This means the Phillies will get a shot at middle relief which should bode well for the hitters. I like Kyle Schwarber a lot in this spot and he's coming off a weekend with two singles, a double and a home run. He appears completely healthy from being a bit banged up earlier this month so I shopped around a few of his lines. The one I landed on is for him to record 2+ bases and I found it as low as -105 but as high as +110. By the time I was finished that +110 had moved to +105 but I'll take it there. On one site his anytime home run odds is only +210 so I think the safer move is to grab the +105 and be happy even if he hits a home run.

Atlanta Braves at Pittsburgh Pirates
While I barely have a winning record, I haven't incorporated the odds although I try and throw in something at plus-odds and today I'm going to have multiple wagers with those. One advantage I think bettors might have is that they're aware of the ability of players being called up or players who are suddenly getting playing time who weren't. I think in those cases it sometimes takes a bit for the books to catch up and there's an opportunity to take advantage of lines until they do. Vaughn Grissom is a good example of that considering the kid has done nothing but rake since being inserted into the lineup. Grissom has a 1.121 OPS since getting called up with three home runs, nine RBI, 12 runs and two stolen bases. Whenever I'm looking at betting a player to record an RBI, I usually head for DraftKings as they typically have the best odds. Today is no exception and I found that Grissom on some sites was +155 to record an RBI and +195 on DraftKings. He's got a good matchup against Roansy Contreras and hitting in the middle of the lineup he should get RBI opportunities. In case you're looking for some home run action on him, Grissom's anytime home run odds on Caesar's is +650.

Milwaukee Brewers at Los Angeles Dodgers
Julio Urias has been outstanding this season and he's gotten even stronger in the second half with a 0.87 ERA backed by a 0.84 WHIP. He's won six straight starts and 10 of 11 dating back to the middle of June. This is an outstanding home matchup against the Brewers who have a team .294 wOBA (sixth-worst) and strike out 25.7 percent of the time (third-worst) against left-handed pitching. I don't love the game odds of -255 to -270 but I do like the Dodgers -1.5 runs. That number can be found for -132 but on Caesars it can be found for only -115. I'm not worried about Eric Lauer taking the mound for the Brewers as Los Angeles has many capable right-handed bats in their lineup.

Ether is strong but Bitcoin drops below $24,000 – Fortune
Posted: at 11:51 pm
After attempting to maintain the $25,000 mark yesterday, Bitcoin (BTC) dropped to lows of $23,788 overnight. Perhaps this is an indication that the worlds largest cryptocurrency by market values two-month rally has come to an end.
Meme-token dogecoin was up 15% over the last 24 hours. One analystsaidthat the token is rallying ahead of its launch of Dogechain, which requires wrapped doge for trading.
Unlike BTC, Ether (ETH) was up slightly on the day, trading at around $1,900. According to areportfrom research firm FSInsight, Ether has a good chance of exceeding Bitcoin in market cap over the next 12 months because the Ethereum blockchains switch to a proof-of-stake (PoS) mechanism will reduce both the production of the tokens and selling pressure from miners.
Areportfrom CoinShares showed that crypto funds had $17 million in outflows in the seven days up to Aug. 12, ending six consecutive weeks of inflows. Bitcoin (BTC) investment products saw $21 million in outflows, and short Bitcoin positions, which bet on a price decline of the largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, had $2.6 million in inflows.
CryptocurrencyexchangeHuobi Global announced it will stop offering derivatives trading services to users in New Zealand starting next week, just a couple of months after expanding operations to the country. The Seychelles-based cryptocurrency exchange cited local compliance policies as the reason for withdrawing margin trading services, options and ETPs as of next week.
Celsius Network, the crypto lender that filed for bankruptcy in July, appears to be in even worse financial straits than previously signaled. A new court filing Monday from Kirkland & Ellis, a law firm the crypto lender hired to lead its restructuring efforts, included financial projections that Celsius will run out of cash by October.
In Latin America,Brazils largest brokerage, XP, launched Bitcoin and Ether trading. The company, which has 3.6 million customers, hopes to reach 200,000 active crypto users by the end of 2022.
Is This The Most Reliable BTC Bottom Signal?
Puell Multiple, a bottom signal for Bitcoin, currently sits at 0.54, and values under 0.50 have historically marked price bottoms and are considered to be good accumulation zones.
The indicator fell to 0.34 in July the lowest it has gone since 2019 according to data from Delphi Digital.
The Puell multiple is the daily issuance of BTC (in USD) divided by the 365-day moving average of the daily issuance of BTC (in USD). It compares the short-term revenue of BTC miners to its longer term trend. A lower score equates to lower revenue for miners.
Since 2014, the Puell multiple has gone below 0.50 only four times: during the previous market bottoms of 2015 and 2019, the Covid-induced crash of Spring 2020, and most recently in July 2022, according to Delphi Digital.
Delphi Digital notes that even as the Puell multiple seems to indicate a market bottom, other indicators must be used in tandem to conduct a meaningful analysis.

Homosexuality Is Still Illegal in These 67 U.N. Countries – Newsweek
Posted: at 11:51 pm
As Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced on Sunday that the country will repeal a colonial-era law criminalizing sex between men, LGBTQ+ rights activists in the country celebrated a long-sought victory.
The law, which did not apply to women, had not been enforced in over 15 years, but its long-standing presence contributed to stigmatizing and discriminating against gay men in Singapore, activists said.
"Sex between consenting men should not be criminalized. There is no justification to prosecute people for it, nor to make it a crime," the prime minister said.
A similar law criminalizing same-sex consensual relations dating back to the British colonial time was struck down in India in 2018 when the Supreme Court ruled the ban to be "irrational, indefensible and manifestly arbitrary."
But in both India and Singapore, the abolition of these laws didn't translate into a complete backing of LGBTQ+ rights, as same-sex marriage remains illegal in both countries.
"Let me reassure everyone that in handling the issue, the government will continue to uphold families as the basic building blocks of society," Singapore's prime minister said on Sunday. "We will keep our policies on family and marriage unchanged and maintain the prevailing norms and social values of our society."
Despite increased acceptance in the past two decades of LGBTQ+ rights around the world, there have also been backlashes and setbacks in many countriesand in 67 nations part of the United Nations, homosexuality is still persecuted as a crime.
A map produced by the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersexual Association (ILGA) in 2020, seen above, shows the countries where homosexuality is still criminalized.
Since the report was published, Bhutan and Antigua and Barbuda decriminalized consensual same-sex sexual relations between adults, respectively, in 2021 and 2022.
Nearly half of the countries where homosexuality is still criminalized are in Africa. These are the 67 U.N. countries with laws that prohibit same-sex relations (65 by explicit provisions of law, 2 de facto):
In these countries, the punishment for those having consensual same-sex relations ranges from a minimum of two years in prison to a life sentence (in countries including Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia in Africa and Barbados and Guyana in the Caribbean).
In six of the U.N. member states listed above Brunei, Iran, Mauritania, Nigeria (12 northern states only), Saudi Arabia and YemenILGA has full legal certainty that homosexuality carries the death penalty. In five more statesAfghanistan, Pakistan, Qatar, Somalia and the United Arab Emiratessources suggest the death penalty might be imposed for same-sex relations.
Despite these discouraging numbers, the countries listed above are in the minority. Over 64 percent of U.N. state members do not criminalize same-sex sexual acts.
There have also been steps forward in recent years in improving LGBTQ+ rights across the world.
In Mozambique, same-sex sexual acts became legal in 2015, followed a year later by the Seychelles, which outlawed a rule that made sex between two men illegal and punishable with up to 14 years in prison. The country also banned employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.
Trinidad and Tobago reversed laws criminalizing gay sex in 2018, while in 2019 Botswana's court of appeal voted to uphold a ruling that said that criminalizing homosexuality was unconstitutional.
In February 2021, Angola's President Joao Lourenco approved a revision of the penal code allowing same-sex relationships and banning discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.
Gabon repealed a law criminalizing homosexuality which made gay sex punishable with six months in prison and a large fine in June of that same year.
In December 2021, Chile approved a bill making same-sex marriage legal as well as allowing same-sex couples to adopt, while Switzerland introduced marriage equality in July 2022.

Putin Is ‘Out of Ideas,’ Things in Ukraine Will Get Worse Rapidly: General – Newsweek
Posted: at 11:50 pm
Retired U.S. General Barry McCaffrey said Monday that Russian President Vladimir Putin is "out of ideas," and will see things get worse for himself rapidly in his ongoing war in Ukraine.
McCaffrey tweeted that Putin's military is "operationally in a box," while Russia as a whole is "showing signs of severe strain from growing military losses and economic isolation."
Ukraine has been reporting a series of successful strikes on Russian targets and groups in recent weeks using U.S.-supplied High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), which have been described as a "game changer" last month by retired U.S. Army General Mark Hertling. While Ukraine records these purported victories, Moscow is allegedly carrying out forced conscriptions to bolster its ranks while also offering cash incentives to its existing troops to motivate them to fight.
Putin has also had to contend with the economic fallout of the invasion that saw unprecedented Western sanctions take aim at Russian oil, oligarchs, and other entities.
Still, Russia has continued to express confidence in its ability to succeed in the conflict. Ivan Nechayev, the deputy director of Russia's Foreign Ministry Information and Press Department, asserted during a press briefing last Thursday that the country's goals of "demilitarizing and de-Nazifying Ukraine" will come to fruition.
"Only when [Russia's goals] are achieved, will it be possible to guarantee peace, stability and security in the region," he said.
However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is a native Russian speaker and is Jewish, who had family members die during the Holocaust that was perpetuated by the Nazis during World War II. He was elected with about three-quarters of the vote in 2019, when Ukraine's prime minister was also Jewish, which would counter Russia's claims that Ukrainians have adopted a "Nazi" ideology.
McCaffrey's Monday tweet also linked to an appearance he made on MSNBC in which he discussed the implications of a car explosion in Moscow on Saturday night that killed 29-year-old Daria Dugina, the daughter of one of Putin's allies, Alexander Dugin.
Russia's Federal Security Service has accused the Ukrainian secret services of organizing the attack, and alleged that a female Ukrainian citizen traveled to Moscow in July to carry it out. Ukraine's government has denied any involvement in the bombing.
"Ukraine definitely has nothing to do with this, because we are not a criminal state, which the Russian Federation is," Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Zelensky, said during a telethon on Sunday. "And even more so, we are not a terrorist state."
McCaffrey said on MSNBC that it seems "impossible" to believe that Ukrainians were behind Dugina's death, and wondered whether the deadly explosion could indicate that a rebellious faction is mounting against Putin. He added that he thinks the incident might represent a "growing desperation" among Russians as Ukraine continues to counter Putin's army.
Newsweek reached out to the Kremlin for comment.

Putin revives Soviet-era title of ‘Mothers Heroine’ – ABC News

Russian President Vladimir Putin recently reinstated a Soviet-era award, giving women who have ten or more children a single payment of a million rubles (worth $16,747 USD, as of publishing).
The honorary title and certification of "Mother Heroine" are given to the mother once their tenth living child turns 1 year old.
According to Putin's decree, mothers will still be eligible for the award if their child dies as a result of war or from an act of terrorism, or in an emergency situation.
The Mother Heroine award was initially established by Josef Stalin in 1944 to encourage repopulation in wake of the country's high casualty count from World War II. At the time, the award was described as a "badge of special distinction" but was stopped in 1991 alongside the fall of the Soviet Union.

Russian President Vladimir Putins confidence appears to have grown as the war in Ukraine drags on for a sixth month. What could be some reasons for this change after the initial military failures of Russias invasion of Ukraine?
Russian military forces, after retreating from the north and consolidating in the eastern part of Ukraine, have made incremental gains in the Donbass region. In addition, through the use of the Wagner Group - Putins mercenary army Moscow was able to bolster its troops with experienced and ruthless soldiers who have left atrocities in their wake in Syria, Africa, and now in Ukraine. In the southern Russian occupied region of Kherson, Putin is planning to hold illegal annexation referendums to solidify his gains.
Putin has been able to get around his countrys isolation by the West through his counter diplomacy, increasing economic ties with the leaders of Turkey and Iran and participating in the BRICS summit. Many countries in the Global South are non-committal toward the conflict, seeing it more as a regional crisis. Sergei Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister, recently conducted a whirlwind tour of Africa to garner opposition towards Western sanctions. China is still standing by its friendship agreement without limits signed with Russia.
The Russian leader also calculates that divisions within NATO will eventually deepen. High global energy prices, inflation, and expected fuel shortages will, he believes, increase tensions between Western allies. High energy prices are also helping to fund Putins war. Countries, such as India, are buying Russian oil for favorable prices. In addition, Russia is able to raise revenue through the Wagner Groups financial dealings in various countries, allowing Moscow to access critical funding while evading sanctions.
Putin also appears to have completely suppressed domestic opposition to the "special military operation by using terror, imprisonment, and eliminating any free press in Russia. The oligarchs and other elites who have benefited financially by their association with Putin continue to toe the line.
But Putin should not necessarily be so confident as the situation may not be as favorable as he might think. The Ukrainians have continued to fight with limited resources despite Russias military advantages and gains in the east. The arrival of HIMARS have enabled Ukrainian soldiers to launch strikes further into Russian-held territory, targeting command posts, ammunition depots and disrupting supply lines. Kiev is also believed to be close to launching an offensive to reclaim Kherson. That has forced Russia to redeploy some of its troops from the east to protect its gains in the south.
Russia has also suffered significant casualties in the conflict, with British intelligence estimating the number at 80,000. Moscow is running low on troops and is recruiting more underqualified, underaged men, including prison inmates. Putin is resisting declaring a national mobilization because it would signify that the special military operation is not going well. In addition, export controls have impacted Russian arms manufacturers, forcing them to slow down production on advanced munitions. These manpower and equipment problems could stall Russian advances and offer Ukraine a better opportunity for a counteroffensive.
Putins efforts to sow division within NATO and its allies have not been successful. Suspected war crimes, bombing of civilian targets, kidnapping of Ukrainians into Russian territory, and using a nuclear power plant as a military base have actually galvanized Western unity. The European Union has made preparations for the expected energy shortages which Russia is likely to trigger. Sanctions have only been increasing on Russia, its elites, and Putins family members. While Putin claimed his invasion was to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO, he most likely did not imagine that it would prompt Sweden and Finland to join the alliance.
One of Putins primary goals of the invasion was to depose President Volodymyr Zelensky and his government. Not only did his attempt fail, but it actually strengthened the Ukrainian leaders domestic position and increased his standing in the global community. His recent approval rating is 97 percent, higher than what Putin reportedly enjoys at home. While Putin has cracked down on domestic opposition and the media within Russia, and as body bags of dead soldiers continue to arrive, public support might begin to fade much like it did during the Soviet war in Afghanistan.
Although the China-Russia alliance appears strong, Beijing has likely had some misgivings about its total allegiance, particularly in light of Russias poor performance in Ukraine. In addition, Putins invasion has inadvertently made Russia a junior partner by increasing its economic dependence on China. For now, China is abiding by the sanctions, understanding the importance of its trade with its Western partners.
Putin, therefore, has quite a bit to worry about. The Western allies must continue supporting Ukraine with weaponry, intelligence, financial assistance, while increasing sanctions on Russia. A victory for Putin would only encourage him to pursue further imperial dreams. Ukraine needs these tools to defend its sovereignty and push back on Russias territorial gains, making the price for continued military actions too costly for Putin. It would also put Kiev in a stronger position for eventual diplomatic negotiations. That would really give Putin something to worry about.
