They may be the Aldi Olympics, but the Commonwealth Games breed champions – Sydney Morning Herald
Posted: August 6, 2022 at 8:29 pm
As sure as night follows day, the arrival of the Commonwealth Games every four years prompts its critics to belch forth the searing observation that it is not, in fact, the Olympics. The standard is just not as high, they cunningly point out, due to the lack of sporting giants like the USA and China.
Bravo to them, for they are correct, then, now and forever. Come the regional Victorian Games in 2026, they can be just as smug, safe in the knowledge that no Norwegian hurdlers or Iranian weightlifters will be robbing the host nation of gold medals that are rightfully ours to plunder.
Double world champion Kelsey-Lee Barber says the Commonwealth Games have been vital to her global success in javelin.Credit:Getty
Its a base-level take based on the relevance of the Games to the consumer, not the athletes or the sports they represent. The Aldi Olympics they may be in terms of wider appeal but the Commonwealth Games have been an invaluable breeding ground that continues to turn rising athletes into world and Olympic champions.
Sports federations dont look at the Commonwealth Games purely in terms of competitive output, although thats always the aim of the game. What they do offer is a pared-down Olympic experience, complete with all the trimmings that can be the undoing of some competitors when they finally land on the grand stage.
There is village life, in tiny beds, with shared dorms that have athletes coming and going at all hours of the day or night. There are late finishes, with early starts, punctuated by hours on buses or vans, some of which turn up on time, others which may take a scenic route to a venue or training facility.
There are media commitments, some of which take on a life of their own and turn their week inside-out (ask Kyle Chalmers), and dining halls and COVID protocols and doping tests. It adds up to a small version of a big picture that makes the transition to an Olympic experience that much smoother.

On the field of play, or in the pool, the results continue to speak for themselves. Before Emma McKeon was an Olympic record-breaker, she was a prolific Commonwealth champion, having eight gold medals to her name before she even dipped her toe in the water in Birmingham.
And at the 2018 Games on the Gold Coast, the breakout star was a prolific Tasmanian teenager called Ariarne Titmus. One year later, she would beat Katie Ledecky at the FINA world championships, then go on to win dual gold in an unforgettable outing in Tokyo.

Olympic Peninsula Or Vancouver Island: Which Has More To Offer Travelers? – TheTravel
Posted: at 8:29 pm
Perhaps this is a debate no one thought was necessary, but travelers who have crossed the strait of Juan de Fuca and looked south at the towering mountains of the Olympics or north to British Columbia's thriving little capital of Victoria on Vancouver Island might have tried to decide which truly offered travelers more.
Towering mountains, lush forests, coasts exposed to the Pacific, and aesthetic waterfalls are signature characteristics of the Olympic Peninsula. Vancouver Island also boasts high peaks and verdant temperate rainforest, as well as stunning coast and the addition of the islands in the Strait of Georgia. Vancouver Island has Victoria, while the Olympic Peninsula has Port Angeles. But which offers travelers more?
On the side of the Olympic Peninsula, travelers benefit from easy access to Seattle-Tacoma airport. There is no need to ferry a vehicle out to the Olympic Peninsula. This is incredible for road trippers who want to add the peninsula to their route. It offers all the high mountain vistas and stunning coastal views, waterfalls, and coastal wonders that Vancouver Island can, do while simply being more convenient.
Related: Road Tripping The Canadian Pacific Northwest In Two Weeks
Starting in Port Angeles, this out-and-back 6.6 km hike takes about three hours and 25 minutes to finish. This trail is popular from April to October, so travelers should expect others to be using them. Also, unfortunately, dogs arent allowed.
At just 2.7 km out and back, Marymere Falls Trail near Joyce is a great and fairly easy hike that allows travelers to experience the waterfalls of the area. Unfortunately, dogs are also not allowed on this trail.
Kalaloch Beach is generally considered one of the best Olympic Park beaches because of a combination of its size and ease of access off Highway 101. It offers sand shores, tons of trails, a campground, and a lodge. This beach is also famous for its Tree of Life and the Tree Root Cave beneath it.
La Push is one of the largest Olympic National Park beaches. It is actually divided into three different beaches named First, Second, and Third Beach. All three capture the stunning and occasionally stark coastal landscape of the Olympic Peninsula.
Port Angeles is a city and county seat of Clallam County, sitting on the northern coast of the Olympic Peninsula, looking straight at Victoria. With a population estimated to be around 20,000, Port Angeles qualifies as quite a large city for the area. With a great variety of go-to travel destinations in the city, like Harbinger Winery, as well as being surrounded by outdoor destinations, Port Angeles is the perfect Olympic Peninsula home base.
From the point of view of Vancouver Island, It isnt overly difficult to reach the island or to even bring a vehicle. Once travelers have reached the island, getting around it is fairly easy regardless of whether travelers brought a vehicle or not. Vancouver Island may have a waterway between it and Vancouver, but between Victoria and Port Hardy, there is plenty for travelers on the Island itself. Vancouver Island has taller mountains and a scattering of small islands to explore on its coast too. Travelers shouldnt hesitate about venturing to Vancouver Island as it does offer travelers quite a lot.

Starting near Port Hardy, this 12.7 km out-and-back hike is quite a challenging route. It usually takes just under four hours to complete. It is unlikely hikers will experience others as they trek through this stunning landscape. With stunning views of the water and dogs being 100% allowed, it's hard not to love this trail.
This 10 km out-and-back trail starts off near North Cowichan. It is considered a moderate hike, and it is a popular trail for birding, hiking, and walking. This being the case, hikers can expect to encounter others on the trail, but not too often. Dogs are welcome here, but they must be on a leash.
To the far north of Vancouver Island, travelers can discover Port Hardy. This town, as its name suggests, is located on a port with great access to the surrounding nature. Travelers can rent kayaks and venture into the water, or they can simply explore the area by land. Port Hardy also has access to ferries heading in a great many directions.
Victoria is a thriving city and popular travel destination. The city itself maintains its heritage architecture which gives it an old colonial feel. It also has easy access to much of the rest of the island. The city itself has much to explore and enjoy too.

London 2012: 10 years on, has the Olympics really built a legacy in east London? – LondonWorld
Posted: at 8:29 pm
Ten years on, questions remain over the impact that the London 2012 Olympics has had in Stratford and beyond.
The London 2012 Olympics was set against ambitious promises of lasting change, from inspire a generation to regenerate an entire community.
Stratford, one of the countrys most deprived areas, would become a model for social inclusion, while millions of kids would take up sport for life.
So, 10 years on, what legacy has the games really left?
The redevelopment doesnt reflect its community
Unlike previous Olympics in which host cities failed to reap long-term rewards, London 2012 vowed to be different.
Sebastian Coe, Great Britains four-time Olympic gold medallist, spearheaded the bid to bring the games to London, and then chaired the organising committee to deliver it.
He promised to regenerate Stratford and the surrounding areas around Newham, pledging in 2007 that it would bring between 30,000 to 40,000 new homes around the Olympic Park.
These homes were to be affordable and available to key workers, he said.
In 2011, a year before the Olympics, the definition of affordable housing was loosened to include properties up to 80% of the market rate.
This means residents in the area who on average earn around 30,00 would now likely need an annual income of between 60,000 to 90,000 to buy one.
Today, against the original target of 30,000 to 40,000 new homes, just 13,000 have been built.
Only 11% of these are genuinely affordable social homes, where prices are linked to local incomes.
Nearly 75,000 households in the boroughs of Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest are still waiting for council housing, while thousands of people have been rehoused outside of Newham to make way for redevelopment.
Luxury towers with penthouse flats now pierce the east London skyline.
Sian Berry, London Assembly member and former Green Party leader, has worked on monitoring the games impact on social housing and overcrowding.
People in surrounding areas are still living in overcrowded and over-expensive housing by and large, without the boost in social housing we should have had, the Highgate councillor told LondonWorld.
I think its clear that the area of the Olympic Park doesnt really reflect the surrounding area in the way it should have done.
It should have been planned and built far more with the community."
Once-in-a-generation opportunity
In the run-up to London 2012, the government proclaimed the games our best chance in a generation to encourage people to be more physically active.
The Olympics was seen as a way to motivate people to not just take up sport, but sustain it throughout their lives.
Around 1bn was invested by Whitehall into building a legacy of participation. Yet five years after the Games, virtually no increase in participation in England was recorded.
Recent statistics from Sport England show how during the last five years, the percentage of people categorised as active has fallen, while the number classed as inactive has increased.
Ali Oliver, chief executive of the Youth Sport Trust, said London 2012 was a fabulous advert that ignited the imagination of young people, creating a step change in opportunities.
However, in 2022, 10 years on we have more unhealthy and unhappy young people than ever, she said.
Childhood obesity saw its biggest increase last year with one in four Year 6 pupils now obese and one in six young people with a probable mental health condition.
These statistics coincide with 42,000 hours of physical education lost since London hosted the games.
While 77% of parents are concerned that children are not getting enough physical activity, only a quarter know the chief medical officers recommendation is 60 active minutes a day to support a healthy childhood.
So, while some programmes have shifted the opportunity for some, we are far from the societal change needed at all levels from policy to parenting, if we are to build an active nation.
'Massive feat of urban regeneration'
National and regional governments have hailed the legacy of London 2012.
They say the impact of the games and its investment is already being felt, and that there is more to come, as redevelopment continues.
I am incredibly proud of the legacy we have delivered in the last 10 years, the mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said.
The games helped to drive billions of pounds of additional investment in the area for new, truly affordable homes, transport links, business districts and entertainment.
The mayor continued: The Olympic legacy is not just about celebrating the success of the last ten years, but looking forward to the next ten and the years beyond that in order to build a better, fairer, more prosperous London for everyone.
A spokesperson for the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport said it had invested 1bn into sport and leisure during the coronavirus pandemic, while 320m was now being invested in school sport and 250m in grassroots facilities.
"Over the past decade, we have made the nation's health and fitness a priority, the spokesperson said.
Lyn Garner, chief executive of the London Legacy Development Corporation, said: The 2012 games provided the backdrop to a massive feat of urban regeneration that continues to have a huge impact on the city.
Thousands of new homes have already been built with thousands more still to come many of them affordable.
Ms Garner added: The park is delivering on the promises for local people and while we look back on 2012 with fondness, our eyes are firmly set on the future.

Dozens of fake news websites and social media accounts pushed pro-China talking points – CNBC

A Chinese marketing firm hosted a ring of at least 72 fake news sites in 11 languages with corresponding fake social media personas that pushed Chinese government talking points, according toresearchpublished Thursday.
NBC News has viewed the English-language sites, which obscure their ownership and authors. Their articles frequently criticized the U.S. and the West, and appeared to attempt to smooth over concerns in those countries, such as Chinalimiting democracy in Hong Kongandputting ethnic minority Uyghur citizens into detention camps.
According to Mandiant, the company that produced the report, the sites were hosted on internet infrastructure owned by a Chinese marketing company, Shanghai Haixun Technology.
It's unclear who would have organized the campaign, and neither a spokesperson for China's embassy in Washington nor Shanghai Haixun Technology responded to requests for comment. According to Shanghai Haixun'swebsite, the company offers clients in China the opportunity to get their talking points published on news sites in more than 40 languages and in more than 140 countries, and it boasts that it's gotten clients covered in English-language news outlets like The Associated Press and Reuters.
The report adds to a growing list ofexamplesofdisinformation operationsattributedto China, many of which have failed to gain much traction. Dakota Cary, a China analyst at the Krebs-Stamos Group, a cybersecurity company, said the ring of news sites appeared to be a clumsy attempt by a pro-China group to influence Western conversation.
"The campaign observed by Mandiant is another example of how China is unable to influence cultural narratives with inauthentic accounts and forged documents," said Cary, who was not involved in Mandiant's research.
In at least one case, the campaign appeared to have leveraged forged letters to smear an anthropologist, Adrian Zenz, who has publishedsignificant researchon China's treatment of Uyghurs.
The letters appear to have first surfaced online in December, when photographs of them were posted by the Twitter account of a persona named Jonas Drosten. That account has since been suspended, though Google has acached versionof theaccount that is still visible.
A Twitter spokesperson told NBC News it had suspended multiple accounts related to the campaign, but declined to share specifics.
The three letters all concern the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation, the Washington think tank where Zenz works. The first, purportedly from the desk of Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., thanks Zenz and appears to tie him to former Trump adviser Steve Bannon, referred to simply as "Bannon." The other two appeared to be evidence of the foundation paying Zenz more than half a million dollars for his research.
Read more of CNBC's politics coverage:
Spokespeople for Rubio's office and the foundation confirmed to NBC News that the letters are fake. However, they were treated as authentic in several articles about Zenz in the Shanghai Haixun news ring. China Daily, the country's primary state-sponsored English news outlet, alsowrote an articletreating them as authentic in May. Neither China Daily nor the author of that article, Mark Pinkstone, responded to requests for comment.
The use of forged U.S. government letters and fake social media profiles echoes a previous information operation that another cybersecurity firm, Recorded Future, hasattributed to Russia. In that campaign, the forged letters appeared designed to erode support for NATO, the U.S.-led military alliance.
Zenz is a common target for Chinese officials. Last year, the Chinese Communist Party's head of propaganda, Xu Guixiang, held anews conferencededicated to trying to discredit him.
Zenz told NBC News that while he is used togetting criticism from China for his work, this is the most elaborate effort to date.
"I've been subjected to lots of smear campaigns," Zenz said in a phone call. "This one seemed to be slightly more sophisticated because it tried to build a credible argument, with connections, using even fake documents, trying to build a narrative that some people could believe."

Fake news, not media glare on her life, irks Alia Bhatt – India New England
Posted: at 8:26 pm
BY AKSHAY ACHARYA
Mumbai Bollywood star Alia Bhatt, who is currently expecting her first bundle of joy with husband Ranbir Kapoor, is currently going through a very busy phase in her life. While she is expecting her first child post a dreamy wedding with the actor, on the professional front she has two big projects lined up for release first is the OTT movie Darlings and second is Brahmastra: Part One Shiva.
Both projects are very special to her. The Netflix movie Darlings where she co-stars with powerhouse performers like Shefali Shah and Vijay Varma, is her maiden production under Eternal Sunshine Productions banner. Brahmastra: Part One Shiva, which is set to debut on September 9 in cinemas, is her first film opposite her hubby Ranbir.
In a recent conversation with IANS, Alia spoke about the spotlight on her personal life more than professional, her experience as a debutante producer and working with the cast of Darlings.
The overwhelming coverage around her personal life in the media may give an impression that her work is not in the media focus but, Alia gracefully disagrees, I feel there is a lot of focus on my work. Unfortunately, the nature of showbiz is such that people are interested to know about your personal life and as an actor you sign up for that.
But, theres one thing that irks her and rightly so the fake news.
Alia says, The only thing that I get annoyed with is people making up fake news. But, again thats something thats difficult to control in the digital sphere.
She claims that venturing into production has had no effect on the actor in her. For a generous amount of time on the Darlings sets, she walked around like an actor hired to do a job and not the producer of the film.
She says in a matter of fact manner: The actor in me hasnt changed much because of the producer in me. In fact, when we were shooting the film I was majorly on the sets as an actor and not as a producer. Having said that, the producer in me majorly came into play after the film was finished.
As an actor, once the film is wrapped up, youre done. You get back into the action during the promotions or closer to the release of the project. But as a producer, you have to be with the film at every step planning and strategising, monitoring the post-production, checking the edit and the cut till its out for the audience.
I have always been involved in all my films as an actor but this project took me a step further.
The film features an interesting line-up of actors, in addition to Shefali and Vijay, it has another Vijay Vijay Maurya and Rajesh Sharma.
Casting for Alia is of prime importance, something that can make or break a film, When I watch a movie, I get impressed when the casting of the film is very detailed. You can see the hard work of the casting directors, their assistants and that of the entire team put together.
Finally, she talks about her camaraderie with fellow actress Shefali Shah, who plays her mother in the film, Shefali and I are not at all on the same page before a scene. Off the camera, theres something else going on in her mind and I am in my own zone.
Its only when the camera rolls, we spontaneously switch into our characters and thats how we build up the scene, she concludes. (IANS)

Totally Not Fake News: Did the Trade Deadline Actions Solve the Biggest Issue Facing the Astros? – The Crawfish Boxes
Posted: at 8:26 pm
Houston - The Aug 2nd trade deadline has come and gone. The Houston Astros, currently sitting atop the AL West by a double-digit margin and holding the #2 seed also by double digits, made a series of moves to shore up deficiencies in the outfield, catcher, and pitching positions. Made some quality moves, I think, noted Dusty Baker, sitting in his office sampling his latest summer Cabernet Sauvignon.
When the dust settled from all the activity, the Houston Astros picked up Trey Mancini, who can play at the First Base/Outfield/Designated Hitter Positions. Current Os GM and former Astros executive Mike Elias was reportedly happy with the prospects they picked up. He was also checking in from an undisclosed location, as there was some, uh, discontent from Baltimore about the move, and he made this decision out of caution. They also picked up Boston catcher Christian Vasquez, in an attempt to shore up the hitting, or lack thereof, from the catching position (update: Vasquez, in his first at-bat for the Astros, grounded out, so most would say he is fitting right in). To shore up the relief corps, Houston picked up Will Smith from Atlanta Cant beat em, steal em from the champs, opined an unnamed staffer from the Astros.
With all of these moves, the Astros would appear to be setting themselves up for another long post-season run. Yet, there was a sense of more immediate urgency from the Astros brain trust.
Well, ok, we are thinking about the post-season and all. Yes, there is the potential to try to maybe catch the Yankees for home field. Maybe, just maybe, we can win a few home games in a key playoff series or something like that, noted Astros GM James Click Yet, we werent sure we were going to make all that many moves. Coming into the the All-Star Break, we were sitting in a good position for the division and playoff seeding. Wed even run the gauntlet of the New York schedule and crushed it. Going with a 6-man starting rotation and possibly upping it to 7 with Lance [McCullers] coming back. A lineup that is starting to find the rangeyeah, life is good.
However, we saw a huge problem right as we came out of the All-Star Break. When we played the Yankees and the white-hot Mariners, we ran the table, going a nice 5-0. Then, we take a nice trip to Oakland, to play the dead-last As. Then we get swept. [Expletive Deleted] swept by those guys. After they took 2 out of 3 from us right before the break. Ok, maybe we were tired and just wanted to get to the off-time for that first one, but we lost to them. Good grief, [at the time of this interview] we are 0-5 against teams with a non-winning record since the break, 0-5!!!!! raged Click.
The Click diatribe continued: Unfortunately, this is not a new phenomenon for the Astros. We all remember last year when this squad simply could not get past those pesky, dangerous last-place squads. Detroit gave us so, so much trouble. Good grief, the Baltimore Orioles, whove held on to the #1 pick in the draft for at least the past half-decade, swept us at home. They were the worst team in baseball, and they up and swept us. At home. It wasnt even the World Series.
There were some signs that we were better about this in 22. Been handling the Rangers just fine, and the Angels. We even swept the As the first time we played them this year. Yet, since June, weve had some of those issues again. Lost a home series against Miami, then lost our last two series against the As...and we have a ton more games against them this year. Heck, the Red Sox, who are last in the AL East, have won the season series against us. Ok, if they are over .500, maybe, just maybe, we have a chance.
The unnamed exec continued Look, I dont want to panic, but while a 8-1 record against teams with a winning record after the All-Star Break is great, that 0-5 number is not looking so good. If we cant beat those last-place teams, especially with the acquisition of Mancini and Vasquez, we are in deep, deep trouble.
While some personnel remained worried, others took a more serene approach.
Look, I dont like the fact that we are struggling against the As, but in the bigger picture, I think we will be just fine. observed owner Jim Crane. Besides, Ive been enjoying life and rubbing it in every time I see [MLB Commissioner Rob]Manfred and [New York Yankees General Manager Brian] Cashman about how the all-mighty fightin Judges, er, the Yankees, struggled against us, a team that struggles against the As. I am not worried. Now, if we once against have home field in the World Series, then Ill show some concern. Until then, its all good.
Only time will tell if the recent acquisitions will pay off for the Astros. Will they help solve the biggest current crisis of the Astros struggling against their biggest foes: Last place teams? We will have to wait and watch. If they can get past that major roadblock, then we shall see what the Astros will do in the post-season. Until then, we shall wait and watch, just like the rest of the world.

Brazil’s STF Chief Justice insists there are legal instruments against fake news – MercoPress

Wednesday, August 3rd 2022 - 21:26 UTC Citizens need to be well informed before expressing their preference when voting, Fux argued
Brazil's Supreme Federal Court (STF) Chief Justice Luiz Fux said Wednesday that spreading information known to be false during the election period is a threat to the democratic system. For him, Brazil has instruments to combat head-on this risk.
The magistrate insisted during a seminar on the subject at the STF headquarters in Brasilia that a legal response to that matter is provided for in the current civil, criminal and electoral legislation. Brazil is a country that, watching over its democracy, of the government by the people and for the people, prohibits fake news, Fux explained.
He added there was also a need for informational smoothness and that citizens needed to be well informed before expressing their preference when voting.
STF Justice Lus Roberto Barroso also pointed out in his speech that Brazil was going through a delicate moment in democracy, and that authoritarian populism seeks to make use of disinformation, hate, offense, and conspiracy theories.
The STF took part in a seminar on fake news and freedom of speech, co-organized with the German Embassy. The Europan country's Constitutional Court Justice Sibylle Kessal-Wulf also delivered a speech.
Despite all announcements indicating otherwise, technicians from the Armed Forces went Wednesday to the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) in Brasilia to inspect the source codes of the electronic ballot box and electronic voting systems. They held meetings with technicians from the Electoral Justice Department, after which they were due to inspect the TSE's facilities in search of source code glitches.
The inspection came after Defense Minister Paulo Srgio Nogueira sent a note Monday to the TSE demanding to have very urgent access to the data. The TSE replied that access to all source codes used in Elections 2022 have been available since October last year for those overseeing the electoral process, including the Armed Forces. Since the 2020 municipal elections, the TSE has been expanding the list of entities that can have free access to the source codes of the electronic voting system, developed by the Electoral Justice's own programmers. Social media has a significant impact on how fans see players, support personnel, and athletes' families in the modern era and throughout the global era of cricket.
The best performances and memorable moments in cricket matches and even entire series are frequently spoken about, but there are times when the same players are criticised for their recent slump in play or even social media remarks.
In several instances, the wives of cricket players have defended them online in an effort to silence trolls who were trying to disparage the sportsmen.
Here are three examples of cricketers' wives criticising fans on social media:
Table of Contents
Mayanti Langer and Stuart Binnyhave experienced a lot of insults over the last several years due to the inconsistent career of the Indian all-rounder.
Mayanti reacted to a fan who had mocked Binny in February 2020, by saying that her husband was too busy enjoying life and playing cricket.
Actress Anushka Sharma, the wife of Indian cricketer Virat Kohli, was criticised online for the rumours of receiving tea during the 2019 ICC World Cupby former Indian cricketer Farokh Engineer. Anushka was also accused of participating in selection procedures and discussions behind closed doors, and on October 31st, she tweeted a lengthy response that addressed the aforementioned concerns.
In addition, Anushka said in her statement that she was requested to join the High Commissioner in the group photo that quickly became popular on social media.
Anushka Sharma spoke out once again when Sunil Gavaskar had mocked Virat Kohliby saying: During the recent lockdown he only practised to Anushkas bowling, I saw a video. But that is not going to be enough.
It was widely claimed that MS Dhoni had contributed Rs. 1 lakh through a Pune-based NGO to aid employees' families in Pune during the final week of March 2020, when the globe was experiencing the deadliest COVID-19 outbreak.
The former Indian captain received abuse and criticism for making such a "little amount" of money at the time. Sakshi Singh, however, attacked what she saw to be irresponsible journalism on that front on Twitter, accusing Indian media outlets of publishing misleading news.
