Propelling Airmen to a higher level of readiness – keesler.af.mil
Posted: at 9:10 pm
KEESLER AIR FORCE BASE, Miss. --
The Human Performance Training Center started hosting its first 17 Airmen, July 11, for it's initial pilot program.
Keeslers Human Performance Initiative aims to develop healthy, resilient Airmen that are operational and maintain a high level of readiness.
As a part of the program, Airmen spend two hours a day, five days a week working with the HPI staff for individualized instruction, physical training, and treatment to address thepersonal needs and job requirements.
We want to help Airmen create and maintain healthy and sustainable habits to contribute to the preservation of their long term health and longevity as a warfighter, said Master Sgt. Steven Coon, 81st Diagnostic and Therapeutics Squadron HPI program manager.
The program is modeled after the Comprehensive Readiness for Aircrew Training and Integrated Resilience Optimization Network, but is uniquely tailored to support the development of the Airmen we need in all career fields.
The team supporting the 17 volunteersfor the 120-day program consists of a program manager, strength and conditioning coach, dietitian, physical therapist and physical therapy assistant.
We want to grow this program as much as possible, so every Airman can improve their overall quality of life and mission readiness, said Coon. In the future, wed love to add staff from other domains, such as mental health and research.
The HPI is looking to expand its resources and capabilities to support more Airmen.

Bear Grylls Says He’s Anti-Vegetable. Here’s What Science Says – The Beet
Posted: at 9:10 pm
Bear Grylls is known for his ability to survive inthe most harrowing of conditions. The Man vs. Wild star showedviewers how tolive in the wilderness for five years and seven seasons, so the legendary survivalists' latest enemy comes as a bit of a surprise. Turns out he's got a major aversion to... vegetables. During a recent interview with GQ, the former vegan revealed that he is anti-vegetable. In a shocking revelation, Grylls told GQ that hes abandoned his vegetable-exclusive diet for a carnivore one featuring red meat, dairy, and some fruit.
"Super against nuts. And against grains, wheat, and vegetables," Grylls said. "My lunch is meat, eggs and dairy, a lot of butter, and fruit. I have liver probably every other day."
Grylls revealed that he decided to drop his plant-based diet when he caught COVID-19 approximately two years ago. He claims that he got mega-sore kidneys when he primarily ate vegetables and drank raw juice. Associating this diet with his declining health, Grylls stated without evidence that raw vegetables are really not good for you. He justified this decision by asserting that the human body has evolved to eat meat.
Grylls claims that humans have evolved to eat red meatare debunked by a growing portfolio of research. Examining 1.4 million meat-eaters, one study published last July found that regularly eating red or processed meats increased the risk of heart disease by 18 percent. With heart disease affecting approximately 48 percent of the American population, concerns regarding meat consumption continue to rise nationwide.
Eating partially plant-based is proven to help consumers stay healthy for longer, rather than the carnivore diet championed by Grylls. Last August, one study found that the earlier you incorporate a plant-centered diet, the more likely you are to lower your risk of heart disease nearly 30 years later. Tracking the dietary habit of 5,000 people between 1985 and 2018 revealed how positive a predominantly plant-based diet is for longevity.
Despite Grylls reputation for survival instincts, the carnivore diet presents serious risks to longevity. This February, a study in the PLOS Medicine Journal found that a mostly plant-based diet can prolong life expectancy by over 10 years. This study emphasizedthat regular meat and dairy consumption can lead to fatal diseases including cancers, heart disease, diabetes, and more.
Controversial podcast hostJoe Rogan also advocates for a carnivore diet. Recently, Rogan revealed that he cut out vegetables from his diet in favor of an exclusive meat diet. This happened nearly three years after the host invited The Game Changers producer James Wilks on his show to debate Paleo advocate Chris Kresser. During the interview, Rogan admitted that he was impressed with Wilks evidence for the plant-based diet, stating that he considered taking down his original critical review of the film.
[James Wilks] one of the producers of The Game Changers came on to challenge some of the criticism that Chris Kresser presented about the movie, and to say he did well would be a tremendous understatement. Rogan wrote on Instagram at the time. James knocked it out of the park and defended himself and the film quite spectacularly. So much so that Im actually considering taking the original breakdown of the film offline.
Grylls and Rogans affinity for the carnivore diet potentially deprives them and other dieters of essential plant-based nutrients like polyphenols and fiber. Red meat consumption can also lead to inflammation, slow recovery times, and difficulty losing weight. Although a significant source of protein, the carnivore diet excludes a significant amount of important nutrients.
Check out these 9 surprising ways that eating meat is harmful to your health.

It seems that Elon Musk is the man of 2022 but not exactly all for good reasons. Recently, its been reported that the Tesla founder might have an extramarital affair with Google co-founder Sergey Brins wife, Nicole Shanahan. The news broke after The Wall Street Journal reported that his friendship with Brin had ended over the alleged affair.
Elon Musk has been accused of having an affair with Sergey Brins wife, Nicole Shanahan. Photos: AFP, @KaiseratCB/TwitterMusk has denied the allegations and wrote a reply on Twitter saying it was total BS, adding that hes still very much friends with the Google co-founder and was even at a party with him the night before. He said hes only seen Shanahan twice in three years and both times with many people around. Nothing romantic.
The Wall Street Journal, however, reported that Musk had an affair with Shanahan late last year that led to her divorce with Brin earlier this year which is still ongoing also supposedly ending Brin and Musks long friendship.

Photo: Xinhua/Zuma Press/TNSSo, what do we know about the mysterious Nicole Shanahan, the 33-year-old at the centre of the worlds richest man and his fellow multibillionaires would-be rift?
Nicole Shanahan and Sergey Brin got married in 2018. Photo: @MelaynaLokosky/TwitterShe is a lawyer and a tech guruAlthough she has links to billionaires, Shanahan is a woman of her own accord. She is a lawyer and founded ClearAccessIP in 2013 a firm based in Palo Alto that helps patent owners manage and monetise their intellectual property rights, reported The Straits Times. She sold the company in 2020 and its since been acquired by rival IPwe for an undisclosed amount.
Nicole Shanahan is a research fellow at CodeX. Photo: Stanford UniversityOn the legal front, the graduate of Santa Clara University School of Law is also a research fellow at CodeX, the Stanford Centre of Legal Informatics, a joint centre between Stanford Law School and Computer Science, per her LinkedIn page.
Nicole Shanahan graduated from Santa Clara University School of Law. Photo: @NicoleShanahan/TwitterHer profile also states that she specialises in the legal applications of neural networks, structured databases, APIs, UI/UX, automation and SaaS. Away from the tech world, Shanahan is also working on an economic theory called Coasean Mapping to predict the pace and nature of societys adoption of legal artificial intelligence. Take that, haters!
Nicole Shanahan is a tech whizz in her own right. Photo: Stanford UniversityShe is also a philanthropistAfter she sold her company, Shanahan founded Bia-Echo in 2019. The foundation focuses mainly on reproductive longevity and equality along with criminal justice reform and to preserve a healthy and liveable planet.
Her interest in reproductive longevity ties to her own personal struggle to get pregnant, according to The Chronicle of Philanthropys website. Her foundation partnered with the Buck Centre for Reproductive Longevity and Equality as well as with the National University of Singapores Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.
Nicole Shanahan has publicly opened up about her fertility struggles in the past. Photo: @ACRLE_NUS/TwitterLike many women who are not quite ready to start a family in their early 30s, I decided, or so I thought at the time, to take matters into my own hands and freeze embryos. However, after three failed attempts at embryo-making and three dozen visits to in vitro fertilisation clinics around the Bay Area, I learned that I was not nearly as unshakeable as I thought I was, she said in an interview, per the New York Post.
Meanwhile, her interests in social justice stem from her own belief that criminal justice reform will be this generations biggest topic. She told Modern Luxury that she donated to Measure J in Los Angeles County, which will divert its law enforcement budget towards mental and social support services.
Nicole Shanahan and Sergey Brin attended several events together. Photo: @WorldFishNews/TwitterI want to get the word out and assure everyone that I am committed as ever to dedicating my lifes work to social justice, climate solutions and a thoughtful, caring democracy, Shanahan said in an interview with Puck recently.
She told the same publication that she wants her legacy to be in the form of ideas and wants it to be about evolving the human experience on this planet with strength, love and compassion.
Nicole Shanahan and Sergey Brin share a child together. Photo: @drewaltizerphotography/InstagramShe reportedly seeks a US$1 billion divorce settlement Brin and Shanahan reportedly met for the first time at a yoga retreat in 2015, but didnt make their relationship official until 2016s Met Gala, according to The Wall Street Journal. They got married in 2018 and welcomed a daughter together the same year. They reportedly ended their marriage in late 2021, though the divorce terms are yet to be finalised.

Photo: Getty Images/TNSAccording to multiple reports, Shanahan and Brin are in the midst of negotiating the divorce settlements. She signed a prenuptial agreement and is reportedly seeking a settlement of more than US$1 billion, according to The WSJ. Brin cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for their divorce and is seeking joint custody of their daughter. He is not seeking spousal support for Shanahan, requesting she not be awarded any either.

Nicole Shanahan has Chinese roots. Photo: JoroShe had a rough childhoodShanahan might enjoy a high-profile life today, but it was not always easy for the techpreneur. Born to a Chinese immigrant mother and a father struggling with mental health issues, Shanahan had to mature faster than other kids.
My dad was diagnosed with bipolar [and] schizophrenia when I was nine, and my Chinese-born mom had only been in the US for two years when I was born. I had two unemployed parents for the majority of my childhood, so not only was there no money, there was almost no parental guidance, and as you can imagine with a mentally ill father, there was lots of chaos and fear, she told San Francisco magazine in 2021.
Nicole Shanahan grew up under difficult conditions. Photo: News UnzipShe also shared how public assistance got her through the hard times. When you lack access to resources, you really learn how to live with suboptimal infrastructure, she said. So, I learned how to compete in really creative ways by making broken objects perform at levels beyond their perceived capacity.
In the interview, she also opened up about how she bused tables when she was just 12 and loves the internet: Without the internet I would probably still be in Oakland doing the same thing I was doing at age 12.
Nicole Shanahan credits the internet for her career boost. Photo: Bia EchoShe had an unfortunate #MeToo experienceWhile working for a company called RPX Corporation in her mid-20s, Shanahan experienced sexual assault.
It wasnt until the #MeToo movement that I felt comfortable discussing this, but while I was at this job, a male co-worker sexually assaulted me one evening while we were working on a project, she said in the San Francisco magazine interview.
Because the company at the time was all male-led, and this co-worker was highly regarded by the management, he continued to advance more quickly than I did, even though I was the one doing most of the work on our projects, she added.
Nicole Shanahan experienced sexual assault in her mid-20s. Photo: KiddaanAfter the incident, Shanahan suffered from severe depression and had to quit her job to move in with an aunt in Berkeley. She revealed that her biggest regret today was that she didnt report what had happened, as the perpetrator had also assaulted other female employees at the company.
No one understood why I had left and I dont think that I even understood what was happening to me, she revealed.
Nicole Shanahan and Sergey Brin are a combination of two great tech minds. Photo: @KaiseratCB/TwitterHowever, as the strong and persistent woman she is, Shanahan managed to overcome her trauma and founded her AI-enabled patent management company afterwards.
The Silicon Valley entrepreneur has also pledged US$100 million to womens reproductive rights and criminal justice reform through her foundation.
And I actually think that as I move forward out of this separation, I feel very optimistic in how I might grow in this role, she told Puck News.

Can dogs eat raw meat? The risks and rewards of putting your pup on a raw food diet. – USA TODAY
Posted: at 9:10 pm
The raw food diet has gotten the attention of pet owners in recent years.
One of the most popular raw food diets for petsis called Biologically Appropriate Raw Food, or BARF for short. Created in the 1990s, BARF mimics the diet of a wild animal with meat, bones, vegetables and other raw foods. The diet claims to bring dogs back to their non-domesticated way of feeding and boasts benefits like growth, better health and longevity.
But is the diet for dogs? Can your furry friend maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating raw meat? Heres what you need to know.
Yes, technically, dogs can eat raw meatbut that doesnt mean they should.
According to Soma Technology, animals, particularly wild ones, have a stronger stomach acid, helping them digest food and kill off parasites and bacteria found in raw meat. Before dogs were domesticated, their diet contained raw meat like most animals.
What other foods can dogs eat?: The safest way for your pup to consume bananas
Why dogs can't eat grapes: What to do if your pet accidentally eats one
Common proteins in a raw meat diet include eggs, bones milk and these meats:
One type of meat dog owners should be aware of is denatured meat, sometimes called 3D or 4D meat. This meat typically comes from dying, dead or diseased animals, Rogue Pet Science writes. While being processed, this meat isoften deemed unfit for human consumption and ends up in pet food. It's a legalbut dangerous factbecause of the bacteria and chemicals used in manufacturing.
The American Veterinary Medical Associationcautions against feeding your dog raw meat because it doesnt provide the balanced nutrition your canine companion needs in their diet.
Eating raw meat regularly can increaserisk of nutritional deficiencies.A 2011 study from Cambridge University found 60% of dogs on a diet of bones and raw food had nutritional imbalances.
Common pet behavior explained: Why is my dog eating poop and how do I get them to stop?
Proportions are key: How much food you should be feeding your dog
Most veterinarians advise against giving dogs raw diets for the same reason humans dont eat raw meat there are health risks when it comes to the bacteria found in raw food. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns pet owners about raw diets because of bacteria, like salmonella and listeria, which can be found in raw pet food, even packaged meats in stores.
According to a study from the University of California, Davis, there is little to no scientific support in favor of the raw diet. Research suggests canned diets and kibble, as well as home-cooked meals, are beneficial to your pets nutritional intake. In this case, the risks far outweigh any potential benefits of a raw meat diet.
Raw food diets can also be potentially harmful for dog owners and their families. You could be subject to food poisoning or sickness by just handling raw food or taking care of your pet.
If you do decide to feed your dog raw meat, the CDC recommends keeping it frozen and thawing in the fridge until use. Make sure to disinfect all surfaces the raw meat touched, and avoid playing with your pet directly after they eat.
Your pet licking your face or mouth is a playful gesture of affection that can turn risky after theyve gobbled down raw meat. The CDC recommends exercising extra caution around young children and raw meat because their immune systems are not fully developed.

What’s behind the Vatican chief diplomat’s change of tune? – The Pillar
Posted: at 9:10 pm
In Vatican diplomacy, balancing the prophetic witness of the faith, the internal relationships of the local Church, and the realities of statecraft is a challenge.
Vatican diplomats often have to walk a fine line in what they say publicly, none more so than the Secretariat of States foreign minister, Archbishop Paul Gallagher, who has led the departments diplomatic section since 2014.
For much of the last eight years, Archbishop Gallagher has appeared to be a model of diplomatic restraint, limiting his public statements and choosing his words carefully. He has also been, at times, a dogged defender of Vatican diplomatic efforts, pushing back on public criticism on controversial issues like the Vatican-China deal, and stressing the Holy Sees reliance on private discussions, away from the public eye.
Yet, in recent days, Gallagher has appeared to strike a more frank tone, offering measured but pointed criticism on some of the most contentious topics in the Churchs internal and external relations. But what prompted this change in tone from the Vaticans chief diplomat, and what might it signal about the Holy Sees internal thinking?
Share
In an interview with the official outlet of the German bishops conference published on Wednesday, the normally circumspect Gallagher discussed the Vaticans relationship both with the German government and the German bishops conference.
The archbishop seemed clear that the Holy See enjoyed a far easier and more positive relationship with the civil government, led by a Catholic who publicly renounced the faith, than it did with the local bishops.
We are very concerned right now about the direction that the Church in Germany seems to be taking at the moment, Gallagher said. Of course, this also has an impact on our work. This has an impact on how the German state sees the Holy See and the Catholic Church - and vice versa.
The archbishop went on to suggest archly that the German Church should ask itself some tough questions about its considerable wealth, stemming from billions in state-collected tax revenues, and its effect on the local bishops.
The remarks were striking, even in the context of recent Vatican interventions against the German synodal process.
Gallaghers pointed comments about the influence of money on the German bishops were even more striking, given he went on to point out it wasnt an issue that related to the secretariats work. In June last year, the archbishop drew scrutiny for saying that the Holy Sees diplomatic department didnt talk about issues it didnt think it could affect by doing so even to the point of remaining silent on the human rights crisis in China and Hong Kong.
But on China, too, Gallagher has taken a suddenly more robust public stance.
Speaking about the controversial Vatican-Beijing deal, which the pope recently said he expects to see renewed in October, Gallagher candidly admitted in an interview last week that the balance sheet, I suppose, is not terribly impressive.
Despite his stance last year that Vatican diplomats didnt talk about human rights and Hong Kong, Gallagher also weighed in on the arrest of Cardinal Joseph Zen earlier this year, telling America magazine that the Vatican wanted to see Zens case resolved satisfactorily in the near future, and acknowledged Hong Kong Bishop Stephen Chows statements on civil liberties in the special administrative region.
The Holy See is committed to the defense of religious freedom, Gallagher affirmed, including in Hong Kong.
While these statements are hardly provocative in themselves, they all represent a noticeable sharpening of tone by the Vatican foreign minister and a real, if subtle, shift in the way he addresses the most sensitive issues facing the Vatican right now.
And they are not the only sensitive topics Gallagher has addressed with sudden candor.
For months, the Vatican, and Pope Francis personally, have beaten back against furious media speculation about his health and longevity, and insisting, pain in his knee notwithstanding, that the pope is otherwise in rude health and set to continue in office indefinitely.
But, speaking to the German bishops official outlet about the popes future plans, Gallagher noted that other proposed trips presented a great challenge, also for the health of the Holy Father.
Of course, the time he has left is limited, Gallagher observed when asked about the prospects of Francis visiting European countries like France or Germany.
The pope is, of course, 85 years old, and acknowledging that there are fewer days ahead than behind in his pontificate is just stating the obvious. Nevertheless, its an obvious truth the Vatican has been at pains to deflect from aknowledging in public.
Even if the shift is subtle, the Holy Sees senior diplomat suddenly becoming casually frank about Germany, China, and the limited time left to Pope Francis marks a real change. But what is driving it?
One possibility is that it is a calculated change in tone from the Secretariat of State itself.
Gallaghers interview with the German bishops own news service comes hot on the heels of an unsigned statement from Rome about their synodal way, interpreted by some German Catholics as the Vatican pulling the emergency brake.
Similarly, while Pope Francis has remained bullish on reviewing the controversial Vatican-China deal, the Secretariat of State has quietly filled its vacant senior posts in Taiwan and Hong Kong in recent weeks, suggesting it has drawn a line under the idea of more formal diplomatic links to Beijing for the time being.
It could be that Archbishop Gallagher is deliberately tipping the Vaticans hand on German and China as a show of resolve, perhaps in an effort to forestall any further moves by the German bishops to upend their ecclesial structures or by the Chinese to tighten their grip on the Church in Hong Kong.
Together with a sudden frankness about Pope Francis longevity, it might even be meant to signal the institutional commitments of the Vatican, beyond the current pontificate.
It is equally possible that Gallagher is freelancing with his change of tone, perhaps in the expectation he is soon to change jobs. While Vatican officials normally work to five year appointment terms, many of the senior roles below prefect turn over on a different schedule.
The 68 year-old Englishman is approaching eight years in post, the same amount of time served by his predecessor, Dominique Mamberti, whom Pope Francis made a cardinal in 2014 and appointed to lead the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura. When Cardinal Angelo Becciu was made a cardinal by the pope and appointed to lead the then-Congregation for the Causes of Saints, he had served seven years as sostituto at the Secretariat of State, a term he has said was already longer than usual for the role.
At the end of August, Pope Francis is set to convene a consistory in Rome to formally elevate the most recent slate of newly named cardinals and discuss the principles of his new apostolic constitution for the Roman curia, Praedicate Evangelium.
There is widespread expectation in the Vatican that shortly afterwards, in the first weeks of September, Francis will announce a reshuffle in the leadership of several departments, including the dicasteries for bishops, Catholic education, and for Eastern Churches.
With new appointments expected, and new vacancies arising as a result, it is possible Gallagher expects to be moved from his current role and his recent interventions are signs of a kind of end-of-term relaxation on his part.
Whether calculated or casual, what is certain is that Archbishop Gallaghers change in tone isnt meaningless. And what he talks about in the coming weeks, and how he talks about it, should make for interesting reading.

Beyond Carlsen: the devaluation of the World Chess Championship – TheArticle
Posted: at 9:08 pm
For a number of reasons, the game of chess has become unprecedentedly popular, partly due to enthusiasts and serious players alike turning to online play on a plethora of websites that established themselves during the pandemic. In parallel, new players have also been drawn in, due to the instrumental and sensational success of Netflixs Queens Gambit series.
Another contributing element has been the creation of the AlphaZero chess-playing engine, with its amazing abilities, including an almost vertical learning curve, resulting in the strongest chess-playing entity the world has ever seen. The science has primarily been the work of Demis Hassabis, rewarded with the CBE for his efforts, and a $400 million sale to Google of his company, Deep Mind. The achievements of Demis, and the brilliantly quasi illogical strategies and tactics of AlphaZero, were likewise already covered in my column Arise Sir Demis . The games were contested against the most powerful available commercial chess programme, called Stockfish itself many times stronger than the IBM Deep Blue programme which defeated Garry Kasparov himself in 1997.
The 1993 World Title Challenger, the British Grandmaster Nigel Short, described the AlphaZero games as being of such beauty that he felt he was in the presence of God. Demis himself explained that his self-taught programme, which had already mastered the near infinite complexities of the oriental games of Shogi (Japanese Chess) and Go, was the key to understanding intelligence itself.
But the rise of the all-conquering thinking engines has been a double-edged sword, arguably undermining the prestige of the human world champion. Further recent developments have reinforced this perception and the aura of the human world chess championship has consistently declined.
This week I return to a further contributing development, the meteoricrise, lasting domination, but sudden abdication of the Norwegian World Chess Champion, Magnus Carlsen.
The culmination of a long line of champions, which stretches back into the 18th century, Carlsen is also a uniquely talented representative of the modern era. Magnus has attained the highest-ever chess rating recorded, outclassing even the mighty Kasparov.
Magnus wins virtually every competition which he enters, and has adapted seamlessly to the coronavirus crisis, which, as we have seen, has obliged chess to migrate online to a huge extent. Magnus has prudently avoided the damage to his reputation occasioned by suffering defeats against chess computers, a fate which overtook both Garry Kasparov and Vladimir Kramnik. Finally, Magnus has leveraged all the opportunities afforded by his title of World Chess Champion, adapting perfectly to the modern environment, even to the extent of floating his online chess company, Play Magnus, for $85 million dollars, while simultaneously earning a fortune as a trendy ambassador for the fashion line G-Star Raw, often appearing alongside the Hollywood superstar Liv Tyler.
The title of World Chess Champion dates to no later than 1886, when Wilhelm Steinitz defeated Johannes Zukertort in a gladiatorial contest, specifically designed to resolve the question of who was the strongest player in the world after Paul Morphys death in 1884, though Steinitz had claimed that status since 1866. Less clear is whether the great predecessors of Steinitz also merited that proud title. Part of the difficulty of authentication is lack of evidence of important contests and gaps in the record.
The story begins in the 18th century, when the French chess expertFranois-Andr Danican Philidorwon an important match in 1747 against the erudite Philip Stamma, translator of oriental languages to the court of King George II. Sadly, none of those games has survived. Following Philidor, who died in 1795, there comes a hiatus, until the brief flourishing of La Bourdonnais during the 1830s. After this, there is a further gap in the record until the 1840s, when the French heir to the Philidor tradition, Saint-Amant, was overthrown in Paris, the epicentre of European chess life at that time, by the English champion Howard Staunton.
Fortunately, from Staunton onwards, there is a relatively unbroken line of succession, with each champion being dethroned by the next in line. The exceptions are the trinity of Morphy, Fischer (both of whom simply downed tools), and Alekhine (who died in office), thus permanently preserving their hallowed nimbus of invincibility. Until the death of Alekhine, the title was in effect the personal property of the champion himself.
The first great player who could be considered a World Champion was Philidor, whodominatedthe chess scene of his day. The term World Champion was not used when describing him, with commentators preferring to employ such metaphors as wielding the sceptre. There is also the problem that very few of Philidors games on level terms have survived, his reputation largely being constructed on his blindfold simultaneous displays, which so electrified London chess enthusiasts. Philidor was able to conduct three games blindfold at once, a feat that led to a letter of admonishment from the French encyclopaedist, Denis Diderot, warning Philidor that such exploits might lead to brain damage.
It is interesting to note that Philidor was the first great apostle of pawn power in chess. According to Philidor, pawns determined the structure of thegame;they were in fact the soul of chess, not mere cannon fodder, whose sole task was to make way for the power of the pieces. In this respect his chess teachings paralleled the rise of the masses embodied in the French Revolution of 1789.
France was the dominant chess nation at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, and the next player after Philidorwho couldbe considered an early world champion was the 19th-century French master Louis-Charles Mah de La Bourdonnais. His claim to fame rests primarily on his mammoth series of matches against Alexander McDonnell, contested in London in 1834. This represented the finest corpus of games ever created up to that time and numerous generations of chess devotees learned their basic chess strategies and tactics from these ingenious and well contested battles. Both protagonists appear to have become mentally exhausted by their efforts and died shortly after their epic series.
In the panoply of proto-champions, Howard Staunton, the Victorian polymath, Shakespearean scholar, and assiduous chronicler of the English schools system, is the only English player who could legitimately be considered as world champion. In a series of matches between 1843 and 1846, Staunton defeated the French master Pierre Charles Fournier de Saint-Amant, followed closely by victories against the German master Bernhard Horwitz and Daniel Harrwitz, originally from Poland. Stauntons match against Saint-Amant was the first contest at the highest level that closely resembled the template for modern World Championship competitions. The design of chess pieces in regular use for important competitions, including the2018 Londoncontest between Carlsen and his challenger, Fabiano Caruana, are named the Staunton pattern, after Howard Staunton.
The German master Adolf Anderssen seized the sceptre from Howard Staunton when he decisively defeated the English champion in the very first international tournament in London 1851. Anderssen was one of that select group, which includes Mikhail Botvinnik and Viswanathan Anand, who initially assumed the accolade of supreme chess master from a tournament rather than a match. The London event was in fact put together by Staunton, who thereby created a perfect pretext for losing out to Anderssen in their knockout match, it being notoriously difficult to compete in an event, whilst simultaneously organising it.
Paul Morphy was the American meteor who took the world by storm over thetwo momentous, whirlwind years of 1857 and 1858. His grand tour of Europe culminated in a match victory against Adolf Anderssen, after which Morphy was universally acknowledged as the worlds greatest player. Thereafter Morphy issued a challenge to anyone in the world to take him on at odds (Morphy starting the game with a pawn handicap) but no one accepted. At this point the meteor had burnt itself out and Morphy, tragically, retired from chess, a curious forerunner of Bobby Fischers behaviour following his famous 1972 World Championship victory against Boris Spassky.
Morphy understood the principles of chess better than anyone who came before him. Anderssens tactical brilliance sprang like Athene from the head of Zeus, without necessarily having grown from regular organic pre-conditions. Morphy, on the other hand, constructed his positions along sound strategic and positional lines, before unleashing his devastating arsenal of tactical weaponry. On Morphys retirement, Anderssen resumed the position of world leadership which had belonged so fleetingly to the first great genius of American chess.
Anderssen can claim to be one of the supreme tacticians of all time. Three of his wins are of imperishable beauty. On their own they would justify anyones devotion to chess. They are his Immortal Game against Kieseritsky (played at Simpsons-in-the-Strand, not the tournament) of London, 1851; his Evergreen game against the pseudonymous Dufresne (in reality the German player E. S. Freund) of Berlin 1856, and his majestic sacrificial masterpiece against Zukertort of Breslau,1869.
Anderssen lost a match in 1866 toWilhelm Steinitz, the first player who could definitively be describedas an official World Champion. The previous wielders of the sceptre, Philidor, La Bourdonnais,Staunton, Morphy and Anderssen himself, were all, at the time, acknowledged as the leading chess practitioners of their day, but it is less clear that the title world champion had been universally accepted. Steinitz, on the other hand, insisted on this description and he himself dated his tenure from his 1866 match victory, also in London, against Anderssen. Steinitzs pre-eminence wasconfirmed 20 years later when he demolished Johannes Zukertort in their 1886 match in the US, which was the first to be specifically described as a World Championship contest.
Thus if the 18th century laid the foundations for a world championship, it was the 19th century that grounded the roots. The 20th century maintained thevolcanic procession of greats with thecolossusEmanuel Lasker spanning thefin de sicle. Capablanca, Alekhine, Botvinnik, Karpov, and Kasparov dominated nearly all of this most modern epoch, with Anand bridging the 20th and 21st centuries. In this century, there has been one singleforceirrsistiblein the form of Magnus Carlsen.
From 1946 onwards the prestige of the world title was largely upheld by the world governing body FID and partly by my own organisations, which carried the torch in 1993 (Kasparov v Short) and 2000 (Kasparov v Kramnik).
However, in recent years, primarily during the reign of Carlsen, the length of the championship match has shrunk from its traditional 24 games to a mere 12 (plusrapid play offs). The most recent world championship match, staged in Dubai last year, was run entirely under the auspices of FID, the authority of which is now universally accepted under the Presidency of the Russian Arkady Dvorkovich.
The implication is thatchess at this exalted level is a sport, both mentalandphysical an appropriately termed Mind Sport. As the Championship was in process a wonderful flash of confirmatory news emerged from the media: Magnus Carlsen was nominated, in Norway, to win the Sports Personality of the Year. This Championship had emerged as a realBattle of the Titans. Magnus had now won five world title bouts, twice versus Anand, once each against Karjakin , Caruana and Nepomniachtchi. Two ended with the tie-breaks, at which Magnus excels. On the second such occasion, Magnus praised Fabiano, as being his most difficult opponent.
With victory in Dubai, Magnus had secured his tenure as World Champion until 2023. He would then have held the title for 10 years, thus moving into an equal category of championship longevity with such greats as Capablanca, Petrosian, Karpov , Kramnik and Anand, ahead of the short-lived tenures of Euwe, Smyslov, Tal, Spassky and Fischer. Only Steinitz, Lasker, Alekhine, Botvinnik, and Kasparov held the title for significantly longer periods. In the modern world, where everything has speeded up, could Carlsen go on to outperform all these titans?
The answer we now know to be: no.
In abdicating the title Carlsen has left ambiguity over whether he will return. Had he, with Boris Johnson, mimicked the Terminators popular quip (Hastala vista, Baby), wecould still wonder whether this was just goodbye or, alternatively, see you later. Carlsens farewell, though, seems a touch more final.
This week sfinal gameexemplifies the key ingredients of a Magnus triumph. The game was the decisive win which clinched Magnus World Title defence against the notorious Putin supporter Sergei Karjakin. Just as Karjakin seemed on the point of gaining counterplay, Magnus struck his rival down with a surprise Queen sacrifice.
Unlike Karjakin and Caruana, his two previous counterparts in contesting the crown, Ian Nepomniachtchi has maintained his challengers form into a second successive cycle. He has earned his right to lay down another challenge, but should this prove unsuccessful, we must wonder what transformation would await the world of Caissa if Ding Liren (the runner-up in the qualifying tournament, pictured above) were to prove victorious in the now mandatory ersatz championship against Nepomniachtchi. Could Ding be crowned the first Chinese World Champion in classical chess ?

Opinion | More Republican Women Than You Think Have Had Abortions. Here’s How I Know. – POLITICO
Posted: at 9:07 pm
Despite probably realizing it on some subconscious level, it took my own pregnancy for me to accept that I was in a controlling and unhealthy relationship. My boyfriend had broken down so much of my self-worth and confidence that I didnt have the courage to tell myself the truth about the relationship. But that pregnancy forced me to face it all. Having a child links you to their father for the rest of your life, and this link gives him control over that child in ways you cant predict or stop. For days after leaving the hospital, all I could see were the red flags I had been ignoring, including one harrowing incident I was so ashamed of I kept it hidden. Unlike Juno, I did not have a loving, nerdy best friend as the father, and unlike her, I did not want to go through parenting or a long adoption process with him.
I had an abortion despite the shame I felt about my circumstances. I had an abortion despite a high school friend writing baby killer on my Facebook wall. I had an abortion despite feeling so conflicted due to my Catholic education and confused about how this choice could turn me into a bad person. I had an abortion without a supportive partner or community. I wasnt Juno: I had an abortion.
At the time, I was scared and alone and confused. I certainly didnt recognize the privilege I had. The clinic was two miles away from my childhood home. The procedure was affordable. The staff was kind and professional. The abortion was legal and safe and regulated. And I left for my four-year college three months later.
My abortion story, and everything that happened afterward, is the kind of story that makes political strategists jobs very difficult. As an expert in political data, my job is to put people in boxes. Are you a young person with an electric vehicle that you drive around an urban area? Youre likely a Democrat, and I bet you care about climate change. Are you white, male and the owner of a pickup truck that bumps down country roads? Then you probably have a Donald Trump bumper sticker on that truck, and you probably arent happy about rising gas prices. We can even use the most sophisticated data to find unique cross-sections of voters, those hard-to-reach boxes, such as Republicans who are pro-gun control, or Democrats who dont believe in defunding the police. This is how my world works.
Republicans talk as if abortion is something only Democrats seek and undergo. Not in my home. Not in my church. Not in my community.
The problem with these boxes is that most people are actually far more complex than they appear in even the data. Abortions polls are notoriously inconsistent and vary wildly depending on how questions are asked. Most people hold a complex set of beliefs and ideologies across a spectrum, and I fear that we cant own this complexity out loud in general, but especially on abortion, because of how the abortion debate has become increasingly partisan in recent years. If youre a Republican, you show up in the surveys as being anti-abortion and in favor of fewer exceptions to abortion bans than Democrats. If youre a Democrat, youre probably in favor of abortion rights and more exceptions to abortion bans. If you, like many Americans, fall into the very wide gray space, we might see you show up across some of the more nuanced surveys, but we likely dont have much more specific knowledge about your views.
Republicans talk as if abortion is something only Democrats seek and undergo. Not in my home. Not in my church. Not in my community. The data tell us that at least 600,000 people get abortions annually. Statistics vary and only account for legal abortions. But some of the reddest states in the country states that struggle to even elect Democrats to public office still see significant numbers of abortions, even with very few clinics operating in these states. In 2019, here were some of the numbers of abortions coming out of the reddest states in America: 2,922 in Utah, just over 1,100 in North Dakota, 2,963 in Arkansas and 6,009 in Alabama. The faces and stories behind these abortions would likely surprise us. They shouldnt.
Beyond the statistics on who gets abortions, there is also some agreement across the two parties on who should have access to abortion. According to Pew, 61 percent of voters believe abortion should be legal in some or all cases. Only 8 percent of voters believe abortion should be illegal in all cases. Given these numbers, it should seem that Democrats and Republicans in red states and blue states alike should get to work on deciding what the restrictions and exceptions should be; a law that bans nearly all abortions is unlikely to align with popular opinion, no matter how red the state.
In the community Ive been a part of, I dont see people coming forward to share their personal stories with abortion. And why would they? Its clearly not safe to have had an abortion and its particularly not safe to say it out loud.
If we dont allow people access to this context about their lives and nuanced feelings on abortion, if we dont see people step outside of these boxes in a real way, then how can Republicans meaningfully engage on the issue of abortion access? If we cant even talk about it, how can we legislate on it? If you dont truly think you know someone who has had an abortion, how can you empathize?
In the years since my abortion, I havent felt safe to tell this story. Frankly, I still dont. I know there are many, many more people with stories like mine who dont have the privilege to speak out. I hope we make it safe for them to do so because yes, this is happening in your home. Yes, this is happening in your church. Yes, this is happening in your community.
Perhaps youll find empathy for me as I step outside of this box. Perhaps youll even consider whether your own box is serving you and the people around you. Im a married, white woman, who lives in the suburbs, has worked for many Republicans, and I believe in access to safe, legal abortion.

Could the G.O.P. Beat Whitmer in Michigan? Party Chaos Has Hurt Its Chances. – The New York Times
Posted: at 9:07 pm
PONTIAC, Mich. Dear Mr. President, the letter began.
Donald J. Trumps estranged former education secretary, Betsy DeVos last seen trying to remove him from office using the 25th Amendment after the Capitol riot took pen in hand the other day to plead with him to look past Michigans no-holds-barred Republican infighting and side with her powerful political familys choice for governor.
I hear that some have implied that my family and I are working against you in Michigan, Ms. DeVos wrote in looping cursive on personal stationery. That is fake news. Those telling you that are doing so for their own personal gain.
She added that her preferred candidate, Tudor Dixon, a former conservative media personality, was the only one who can stand toe to toe with that woman from Michigan Mr. Trumps sobriquet for Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat whom Republicans desperately want to topple.
Your support of Tudor can make the winning difference! Ms. DeVos closed her Wednesday letter. Very sincerely, Betsy.
The letter worked, to an extent: Late Friday, Mr. Trump issued an 11th-hour endorsement of Ms. Dixon ahead of Tuesdays primary. But it also highlighted what has been the fiercest, bitterest and potentially most consequential Republican infighting in the country.
For much of the spring and summer, Ms. DeVos and her billionaire relatives the most influential Republican family in Michigan have been at war with Mr. Trumps followers in the state, choosing different sides in consequential primaries for the state Legislature and endorsements at the state partys convention.
The former presidents late nod in the governors race only compounded the confusion and heightened the suspense about what his followers would do on Primary Day. Just the day before the endorsement, eight of his chosen down-ballot candidates sent him an open letter urging him not to do political business with the DeVos family.
The open hostilities have emboldened an ascendant grass roots wing of Michigan Republicans who are devoted to Mr. Trump and his agenda. And his endorsement will test the degree to which the former president has the wherewithal to lead them.
All told, Republicans are in danger of bungling what earlier this year appeared to be a promising opportunity to oust Ms. Whitmer. The partys strongest two candidates were jettisoned from the ballot because of a signature-forgery blunder. The resulting field, aside from the untested Ms. Dixon, includes one candidate facing misdemeanor charges related to the Capitol riot and another dogged by years-old lawsuits over allegations that he made racist and sexually explicit comments to employees.
The state of the midterms. We are now over halfway through this years midterm primary season, and some key ideas and questions have begun to emerge. Heres a look at what weve learned so far:
At the same time, Michigan Republicans have elevated two Trump-endorsed election deniers to run for attorney general and secretary of state key posts overseeing the election machinery in a vital 2024 presidential battleground state.
And the weak candidates and intraparty chaos have presented Democrats who are aided by a new state legislative map drawn for the first time by an independent commission with a real opportunity to win control of the State Senate for the first time in 40 years.
That Ms. DeVos felt compelled to appeal to Mr. Trump as if Jan. 6 had never happened was a measure of how bad things had gotten.
A major funder of Mr. Trumps two presidential campaigns, the family was cast out by the Republican base after Ms. DeVos committed the apostasy of seeking to remove Mr. Trump from office over the Capitol riot, arguing that he was no longer fit to serve. Ms. DeVos has said her entreaty was rejected by Vice President Mike Pence, and she resigned the day after the assault.
In Michigan, Mr. Trump and the DeVos family have backed opposing candidates in seven Republican primaries for state legislative seats. (Mr. Trump has endorsed 11 such candidates in all, more than in any other state.)
Endorsing Ms. Dixon on Friday night, he took credit for her campaigns success which he attributed to his shout-out to her during an April rally in Michigan, a moment she memorialized in her campaigns TV ads. Her campaign took off like a rocket ship, he said.
Jase Bolger, a former speaker of the Michigan House who is allied with the DeVos family, said the states Trump loyalists had tried to drive a wedge between Republicans, adding, They have to be careful because otherwise they could be helping Democrats.
The down-ballot G.O.P. primaries in Michigan are emblematic of skirmishes across the country, where Trump-inspired insurgents are vying to wrest control from Republican power brokers who have long controlled purse strings and nominations.
Candidates endorsed by Mr. Trump won primaries for governor in Pennsylvania, Illinois and Maryland, while the G.O.P. establishment prevailed in Georgia and Nebraska. Similar Republican showdowns will unfold in primaries for governor on Tuesday in Arizona and on Aug. 9 in Wisconsin.
In the state of Michigan, especially in the Republican Party, its fractured, said Garrett Soldano, a chiropractor and leading Republican candidate for governor who entered politics by organizing opposition to Ms. Whitmers pandemic mitigation efforts in 2020. We have the old guard, the establishment, the DeVos empire that are putting their thumb on the scale. And we have we the people, these grass roots folks that are standing up.
But the Republican strife has national Democrats newly optimistic about taking control of the State Senate for the first time in generations.
Theres no better state legislative opportunity in America than the Michigan Senate, said Daniel L. Squadron, a former New York state senator who leads the States Project, a Democratic group focused on winning state legislative chambers. What were seeing in the primaries is just how deeply Trumpism and the Big Lie has infected the Republican Party.
For decades, the DeVos family has been synonymous with Republican politics in Michigan. Ms. DeVos has twice been the chairwoman of the state Republican Party, and her husband, Dick DeVos, was the partys nominee for governor in 2006.
The family, which founded and still runs the Amway multilevel marketing company, has given at least $23 million to Republican candidates, political action committees and conservative causes in the state since 2015, according to an analysis by Progress Michigan, a liberal organization.
In almost any recent election, a Michigan Republican would use an endorsement from the DeVoses as a badge of honor and a catapult to fund-raising success. But Ms. Dixons rivals have attacked her for associating with the family, and she has found herself explaining that she does not agree with Ms. DeVos about Mr. Trumps actions on Jan. 6, 2021.
Ive come out publicly and said that in that case, we dont agree, Ms. Dixon said in an interview, adding of the family: Theyre supporting what I want to do for the state. Its not that Im supporting what theyve done in the past.
Her rivals have not found that explanation sufficient.
Recent debates have devolved into a DeVos family pile-on. This past week, Mr. Soldano turned to Ms. Dixon and said the DeVoses wanted to implement the 25th Amendment against President Trump they abandoned President Trump.
On Wednesday in Pontiac, Ms. Dixon came under fire from Kevin Rinke, a self-funding candidate and former car dealer who is running television ads saying that Ms. Dixon has taken millions from the same billionaires who tried to remove Trump from office.
The truth hurts, Mr. Rinke said. Fess up.
Gustavo Portela, a spokesman for the Michigan Republican Party, said in an interview that the party was not worried about the fractious nature of the primaries and that at the end of the day, folks are going to get together, and theyre going to do everything possible to elect a Republican this fall.
The four leading Republican candidates for governor, including Ms. Dixon, have all fostered doubts about the 2020 election outcome and say they are staunch allies of Mr. Trump. During a May debate, three said he was the real winner in Michigan (he lost by 154,000 votes), while Mr. Rinke said that fraud had occurred but that he wasnt sure if it was enough to tip the election. (There is no evidence of widespread fraud.)
One candidate, Ryan Kelley, a real estate agent, has sought to parlay notoriety from being charged with four misdemeanors for his actions at the Capitol on Jan. 6 into momentum for his campaign. Voters, he argued in an interview, are sick of this insurrection charade.
A super PAC funded by the DeVos family and backing Ms. Dixon has also bashed Mr. Rinke, calling him simply unelectable in a TV ad. It recalls two lawsuits from the early 1990s in which he was accused of gender and age discrimination and of using sexually explicit and racist language toward his employees.
Mr. Rinke settled the cases and, in an interview, said the accusations were absolutely false.
The G.O.P. primary was never supposed to be this contentious.
Heading into this year, Republicans had made Ms. Whitmers office a prime target.
Party insiders looked to two top recruits James Craig, a former Detroit police chief, and Perry Johnson, a wealthy businessman to contend for the nomination. But both failed to qualify for the ballot after contractors for their campaigns submitted petitions with forged signatures.
The DeVos wing of the party took major losses in April when, at the Michigan G.O.P.s endorsement convention, delegates elevated two Trump-backed candidates, Matthew DePerno and Kristina Karamo, for attorney general and secretary of state. Both have said the 2020 election was stolen, and neither has received support from the DeVoses.
Ms. Whitmer appears to be more resilient than expected months ago. Her approval rating was 55 percent in a July survey conducted for The Detroit News. Among independent voters, 61 percent approved of Ms. Whitmer, compared with just 33 percent for President Biden, the poll found.
A similar uncertainty has settled over the State Senate. Though Republicans currently hold a 22-to-16 advantage in the chamber, new maps have upended the partys grip; Ms. Whitmer would have carried 23 of 38 districts in 2018.
In one district just south of Detroit, a Republican candidate named James Chapman attended election-denial protests at the State Capitol in 2020, including one where he held a brunette doll hanging by a noose.
After months of intense political conflict, some candidates showed no signs of dtente, even after Mr. Trump backed Ms. Dixon.
From what I know about President Trump, he likes winners, Mr. Soldano said in a statement late Friday in response to the former presidents endorsement. I look forward to his support on Aug. 3.

Letter To The Editor: What Is The Wyoming Republican Party Afraid Of – Cowboy State Daily
Posted: at 9:07 pm
Dear Editor:
What is the Republican Party in Wyoming afraid of? Why are they supporting those in the GOP leadership that dont want January 6 investigated? Whats to hide if you were not involved? Dont we want to know the facts?
What if in 2016 Vice President Biden said, No I certify that Hillary Clinton really won the election? We would be outraged and rightly so. Dont we want to know what or who triggered January 6? Oops sorry trigger like compromise are bad words.
Why are they afraid of Congressman Liz Cheney? If the party is as conservative as they say they are then why would they kick out a congressman who voted over 90% of the time with Trump? All the sudden she isnt conservative enough?
In fact, in the latest missive from the WY GOP Liz is called Woke. What is the new definition of conservative? Who changed the definition? All of this should make you wonder, is the Former President a man or a golden calf we now must worship because we got tired of waiting on Moses to bring the 10 commandments down from the mountain.
In this case Rudy Giuliani to bring actual evidence, not hearsay, actual evidence that showed there was voter fraud and Trump won. Believe me, I wanted there to be evidence. I could not believe a bumbling glad hander who campaigned from his basement won.
I streamed news on my computer at work all day then beat it home to watch the news with my dad. Many hoped for a News Alert that said, Major Smoking Gun; Biden concedes, and Trumps stay in WH. But it didnt happen. And after a few weeks it started getting old and embarrassing listening to we have the proof we have the proof only to find out the sky was not going to fall, and that Giuliani used a bad batch of Just for Men hair color.
Some still believe and blame the judicial system. Really? The emperor doesnt have any clothes on, there is not any evidence, and someone needs to tell him. Oh, wait that is what Liz is doing but she is being tarred and feathered for speaking and searching for the truth. Remember she was on the floor of the US House when rioters were trying to break down the doors of the Capitol and the House and Senate chamber.
We were not there. If you still believe the big lie look up a PBS Frontline interview with Frank Luntz the Republican Pollster. He told President Trump the polls are NOT in your favor; you are going to lose. But Trump mocked him and like the smarmy salesman he is convinced others to mock Luntz also. Its hard to hear but sometimes the truth is hard to hear.
Rally calls in Wyoming are, cross over voting is bad. There always is cross over voting. And why do you think that is? Because the GOP in the state is angry with a petite conservative blond who believes the brand, she rides for is the Constitution of the United States and it is her duty to protect it.
This small powerhouse is not afraid to speak truth to power and say, hey what Trump was asking Vice President Pence and others to do regarding the certification of the election was unconstitutional. This is not a controversial stance to take. Its the only stance to take.
The WY GOP is so afraid of Liz they have disavowed her. Yep friends, the State GOP are acting like Liz is a rouge CIA agent the Russians have caught, and the CIA is no longer recognizing her as a member of their gang. If you voted for Liz last election, the GOP is now disenfranchising you.
Again, what is the GOP afraid of? Why is Trump afraid of Cong Cheney? She is one member from a small population state, a fly over state. There is a bur under Trumps and the WY GOPs saddle over Liz. Could it be that what she has been saying is hitting too close to the mark, so they want to deflect and say, she isnt Republican enough?
When you go to the county clerk to register to vote there is no written test. You choose. It would be unconstitutional to do otherwise.
What made Liz a RINO? Ive heard she does nothing for Wyoming. Seriously? She introduced legislation to protect fire fighters, coal, guns, stop Executive orders that hinder oil and gas production without Congressional approval, protecting and strengthening rural healthcare, access to tele-health, working to stop the 30 by30 Biden land grab.
There is more but Im over my word limit. Republicans are in the minority. Getting anything passed is impossible. No new congressman from WY will do a quarter of what shes done. Besides that, anyone but Liz, will listen to a guy from New York City on how to vote. NEW YORK CITY?!
Please dont take the constitution for granted. If you choose to vote for someone other than Congressman Cheney, remember, she is working right now to keep your right to vote against her, she knows full well she could lose but defending the constitution is more important for her.
This Cowgirl is riding for the Constitution not a New Yorker that has weaponized the English language to con people into following him.
Sincerely,
Jackie Van MarkTorrington, Wyoming
