You need to watch the most underrated apocalypse movie before it leaves HBO Max this week – Inverse
Posted: at 5:25 pm
In 1966, the U.S Army simulated a germ warfare attack on New York City. From June 6 to 10, Army agents released aerosol clouds of harmless agents that engulfed passengers in clouds of gas. Nobody paid much attention. Neither the state nor the city of New York knew about the trial run, and when a single police officer asked what they were doing, they produced false papers that satisfied any questions. The experiment was only publically detailed decades later.
In the meantime, Boris Sagals 1971 movie The Omega Man explored what those high casualties would look like while also analyzing a society coming out of the tremendous social shifts of the 1960s. Its just too bad that The Omega Man is leaving HBO Max on July 31, 2022.
Following the initial 1966 experiment, the Army concluded that germ warfare would be easy to accomplish with potentially devastating results. Under the right conditions, the subway could expose a large number of people to infection and cause high casualties among the population working in the area.
That proved totally true in The Omega Man.
Based on Richard Mathesons I Am Legend (like the Will Smith movie of the same name), The Omega Man remains one of the most fascinating sci-fi movies to come out of its era, raising provocative societal questions while never losing track of its action.
In 1977, Robert Neville (Charlton Heston) is the last man in Los Angeles. The movie starts with a long shot on Neville driving in his cherry-red 1970 Ford XL convertible with an automatic weapon, occasionally shooting at mysterious figures in hoods. Theres no traffic, no people, nobody out during the sunny day, just the detritus of a world without its denizens.
How does he keep the car so clean?Warner Bros.
Lacking anything better to do, Neville takes in a movie. He can set up the projector himself, but cant change the movie: the 1970 Woodstock documentary. Neville is an older, stoic, trigger-happy sort of fellow who doesnt seem like the type to take in the documentary about three days of peace and music. But in his isolation, Neville has come to memorize every word of the film, repeating a gleeful hippies words to himself about the need to create a better world.
Such a world seems very out of reach. Neville used to be a military scientist, but when America got caught in the midst of a war between the USSR and China, germ warfare was introduced, accidents happened, and the United States was devastated. By the time martial law was instituted, most of the populace was already dead or dying. Then the military failed, including the pilot who was supposed to take Nevilles experimental vaccine into production.
Neville has taken it himself, and it works, but what good is one person vaccinated?
While Neville essentially runs Los Angeles by himself during the day, at night he is on the defensive. The hooded figures that are part of a group known as The Family emerge. Instead of killing them, the germs mutated these people. Now they are a ghastly pale white, right down to their pupils. Their leader, Matthias (Anthony Zerbe), was a news anchor reporting on the last days of humanity. Now, he preaches against everything humanity once stood for, especially modern technology. Every night, they hold joyous book-burning sessions.
Things are not looking good for Neville here, folks.Warner Bros.
Nevilles life of solitude in his apartment seems to mock everything The Family stands for, hence the war between the two factions. While The Family clearly has the numbers, Matthias insists that Neville not be captured using the ways of man that is to say, guns.
The Family isnt zombies they dont eat people and are clearly intelligent and theyre not vampires either, although they hate any form of light. They more closely resemble the trend of communal cults that were taking hold at the time of the movies release, and Matthias leads them with an iron fist.
Eventually, The Family overpowers Neville, puts him in a dunce cap, and takes him to Dodger Stadium to make him pay for his crime by burning him alive. Matthias points out, correctly, that he has been murdering their members, although they are trying to murder him as well for the manly sin of science.
Lisa is no hallucination.Warner Bros.
Neville is rescued by Lisa (Rosalind Cash), a woman he saw earlier roaming the stores of Los Angeles but dismissed as a hallucination. But shes very real and doesnt have time for Nevilles crap. The two escape on a motorcycle and Neville is introduced to other non-cult survivors who have been looking for some hope. He just might be able to provide them some if he can get a cure from his blood.
The Omega Man was a huge hit at the time, although critics panned it as a shameless blockbuster. While its third act leaves some of its questions unresolved, it dares to ask big questions. Its visuals take care to make the viewer feel Nevilles isolation, and the challenges that The Family raises to Nevilles various plots dont have a clear resolution.
If its a summer movie, all summer movies should be more like this.
LEARN SOMETHING NEW EVERY DAY.

How Tor Is Fightingand BeatingRussian Censorship – WIRED
Posted: at 5:23 pm
For years, the anonymity service Tor has been the best way to stay private online and dodge web censorship. Much to the ire of governments and law enforcement agencies, Tor encrypts your web traffic and sends it through a chain of computers, making it very hard for people to track you online. Authoritarian governments see it as a particular threat to their longevity, and in recent months, Russia has stepped up its long-term ambition to block Toralthough not without a fight.
In December 2021, Russias media regulator, Roskomnadzor, enacted a 4-year-old court order that allows it to order internet service providers (ISPs) to block the Tor Project website, where the Tor Browser can be downloaded, and restrict access to its services. Since then, censors have been locked in a battle with Tors technical team and users in Russia, who are pushing to keep the Tor network online and allow people to access the uncensored web, which is otherwise heavily restricted in the country.
Russias efforts to block Tor come in two flavors: the technical and the political. So far, Tor has had some success on both fronts. It has found ways to avoid Russian blocking efforts, and this month, it was removed from Russias list of blocked websites following a legal challenge. (Although this doesnt mean blocking efforts will instantly end.)
We are being attacked by the Russian government, they are trying to block Tor, says Gustavo Gus, community team lead of the Tor Project. The past few months have seen Russian officials adapt their tactics, Gus says, while the Tor Projects anti-censorship engineers have successfully launched updates to stop its services from being blocked. The fight is not over, Gus says. People can connect to Tor. People can easily bypass censorship.
In Russia, the internet infrastructure is relatively decentralized: ISPs can receive blocking orders from Roskomnadzor, but its up to individual companies to implement them. (China is the only country to have effectively blocked Tor, which was possible due to more centralized internet control). While Russian authorities have been installing new equipment that uses deep packet inspection to monitor and block online services, the effectiveness of these blocks is mixed.
The censorship thats happening in Russia is not constant and uniform, Gus says. Gus explains that because of different ISPs, Tor may be blocked for some people but not others, even those in the same city. Both Tors metrics and external analysis appear to show the dwindling effectiveness of Russian censorship.
Tors data shows that since the end of 2021 there has been a big drop in the number of people directly connecting to Tor in Russia. However, people are able to connect to its services using volunteer-run bridgesentry points to the network that cant easily be blocked, as their details arent publicand Tors anti-censorship tool Snowflake. External data from the internet monitoring group Open Observatory of Network Interference shows a big rise in people in Russia accessing Tor using Snowflake.

What Is Incognito Mode And Should You Be Using It? – Forbes
Posted: at 5:23 pm
Incognito mode is a setting for your web browser which doesnt keep a record of the web pages you visit. But that doesnt make it 100% private. Heres everything you need to know.
The majority of web browsers (which you use to access the internet) keep a record of the websites and pages you visit by default. By storing your history you can easily find and revisit content later on.
Most browsers have an option to temporarily suspend this record keeping, meaning the web pages you visit will be kept private at least to anyone else using that same browser.
Every browser has a different name for the setting. In Chrome its Incognito Mode, in Microsoft Edge its InPrivate Mode, in Safari its Private Browsing and in Firefox its Private mode.
They could be useful if you were planning a surprise for someone you share use of a computer or tablet with, for example.
Click or tap the button in your browser youd usually use to open a new tab (typically three vertical dots or lines in the top right-hand corner) and select open new private/incognito tab. Everything you do in that new tab(s) will go unrecorded by your browser.
No, private browsing modes dont save your browsing history, cached pages or cookies, so theres nothing to delete.
If you dont use a private browsing mode, deleting your history, cache and cookies has a similar effect to browsing privately, in that nobody else who uses your device will be able to see what youve been doing.
From anyone else using your device, yes but not from the wider world.
The browser wont keep a record of your activity, but this doesnt mean a record of the pages you visit wont exist. For example, if you visited BBC News using private browsing, its analytics would record your (relatively anonymised) on-site activity, even though your device wouldnt.
Any website you have an account with and sign in to Instagram, for example would keep records of where and when you accessed your account too.
Similarly, most search engines you use could keep records of the searches you make, unless you tell them not to. And If youre using a school or work network, the IT department can probably see records of your activity.
Finally, but fundamentally, your broadband provider will also likely keep records of what you do online. And if you were accused of pirating movies online, for example, a movie studio or distributor could take legal action to get your browser history from your broadband provider in order to seek damages from you.
Yes, but not by using a browsers incognito or private mode.
Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) conceal your IP address the unique identifier your computer, phone or tablet is assigned on the internet so that websites you visit dont know who or where you really are. They also encrypt the data you send and receive over the internet, making it unintelligible to anyone without a decryption key.
Any VPN worth its salt will also have a no-log policy that means even it wont keep a record of what you do online and so cant be compelled to hand it over to anyone. If you want to go even further, a VPN can protect you against state surveillance and international surveillance alliances such as Five Eyes.
Another way to browse the web privately and anonymously is the Tor Browser. The software blocks trackers, encrypts traffic, defends against surveillance and makes it harder for users to be identified via fingerprinting (a profile of you based on your browser and device information).
While VPNs have become a big, mainstream method for protecting your privacy online, the Tor Browser has long been associated with accessing the dark web and the cyber crime found there. The Tor Browser, while unlike the best VPN services is free of charge, is arguably more risky and less secure.

Catholic Board fails to provide equitable recreational funding to diverse Malton high school – The Pointer
Posted: at 5:22 pm
Cristina Verdoliva is more than an avid soccer playerthe game is in her blood.
For the 18-year-old, kicking a ball around, dribbling and running until her lungs burn is a favourite pastime, especially with her family. It started with her father, who has been a fanatic for as long as she can remember. The passion was then passed onto her and her older brother. Both of them spend countless hours perfecting their skills at their home in Malton.
In Grade 9, Cristina attended Ascension Of Our Lord Secondary School and was hoping to follow in her brothers footsteps after he played on the schools soccer team.
She made it on in her freshman year, but was surprised by the lack of support and poor facilities. Funding for outdoor recreation and competitive athletics could be seen at other Catholic schools. While students benefited socially, physically and psychologically, Ascension was falling further behind, much like other parts of Malton that have suffered for years due to neglect.
Ascension is the only Catholic high school in Mississauga without a proper sports facility nearby. Students who enjoy athletics at the school need to train for track and field competitions on pavement and inside the small gym. The schools sports teams do not have a home field nearbyas there is no joint-use agreement between the school and the City which owns the nearby field, which has been poorly maintainedstudents have to travel to compete. Practicing is difficult due to the lack of proper facilities.
In July the field was crunchy from heat and ignored by local kids walking through the area. In the distance CN Rail tracks carry rail cars hauling goods.
(Alexis Wright/The Pointer)
For years the community has been asking for equitable funding. Families have been calling on the Dufferin Peel Catholic District School Board (DPCDSB) and the City of Mississauga to replace the decaying, City-owned, soccer field in Anaka Park beside the school with a new facility that includes a proper track around it.
Critics say the Catholic Board is neglecting the school, largely because of the socio-economic profile of the area.
The Board says funding for the project has not flowed because stakeholders cant reach a decision. It also blamed the Province, but Queens Park told The Pointer the Board is responsible for greenlighting the needed money.
Details of closed door meetings between stakeholders, including the DPCDSB, City of Mississauga and community members have trickled out as they try to hash out how to pay for a new soccer field and surrounding track. Agreeing on a design has been part of the problem. Meanwhile, students like Cristina, who just graduated, wonder why other schools in Peel provide so many more opportunities compared to their Malton school.
Mounting concern over the perceived treatment by the Catholic Board toward students in a school that is predominantly non-white, comes as the church continues to receive widespread condemnation for its abhorrent treatment of indigenous communities going back almost 200 years.
In the spring, the City and DPCDSB reached a consensus on a future facility, but details have not been made public and its unclear whether any formal agreement has been signed between the City and the school board.
[D]ue to the limited size of Anaka Park, a consensus involving the City, DPCDSB, and the Ascension of Our Lord school community on an agreeable design for the proposed track and field amenities did not occur until this spring, Bruce Campbell, a DPCDSB spokesperson, wrote in an email. Until this occurred, any further consideration around funding could not be finalized.
Campbell did not share the details of what was agreed to, or what any future facility might look like.
Documents shared with The Pointer indicate there have been several options considered including an eight-lane track surrounding a tilted soccer field. Improvements also included new top soil, goal posts and a more expensive option with bleachers and benches.
The four iterations that were proposed range from about $300,000 to $5.3 million for a turf field with a dome overtop. Its unclear if any of these options were what the City and board settled on earlier this year.
The redevelopment of Anaka Park to construct a new track and field facility for Ascension of Our Lord SS students has been a top priority of DPCDSB for several years, Campbell said. That is why DPCDSB has collaborated with the City, the Ascension of Our Lord school community, members of the Malton community, and the local MPP to finalize the scope of the project and secure capital funding.
According to the Ward Councillor Carolyn Parrish, the Citys portion of the funding has been sitting and waiting for some time, but the Board has refused to put up its share.
Parrish says the City is prepared to provide the land and fund the extensive design work, at a cost of about $1.65 million (the money still needs to be approved by Council). According to her, DPCDSB has never provided a commitment to fund its portion of the project, which she says is about $1 million.
The School Board claims massive debt and an inability to put in $1 million for the only school in Mississauga without any outdoor recreation space of any kind, Parrish said. I have ensured the $1.65 million is available when the Board is able to contribute their shareall to no avail thus far.
Campbell says the Province needs to commit funding for the Boards share.
DPCDSB continues to work towards securing the funding as expeditiously as possible to construct this project. Once that occurs, the City of Mississauga, as owners of Anaka Park, would likely establish the timelines for the planning and construction of the field, he said. It is ultimately up to the Ministry of Education as to the funding and resulting timeline for the project to proceed.
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Education told The Pointer the Province does not get involved in this type of funding and the school board and municipality are responsible for reaching an agreement including a timeline for the project. Trustees, not the Province, have to make decisions about a Boards use of its capital budget, the ministry said.
Parrish says the Board is using the Province as an excuse, because Trustees simply dont want to fund Ascension equitably.
One wonders how many Ascension kids drop out of school because their Trustees and senior staff cannot or will not provide them with safe conditions under which they can achieve athletic success, Parrish said. It is an outrage that these students, tucked away in an isolated part of the city, have to practice high jump on the pavement of the teachers parking lot and running events in the terrazzo halls of the schooland yet they win ribbons at track meets.
Parrish says the way Ascension has been treated for decades by the board, which put a high school into the footprint of an old middle school, despite the lack of space, is a clear sign of neglect by the board, which prioritizes schools outside Malton and other diverse areas.
Councillor Carolyn Parrish has been working to find a way to create a new recreational facility for Ascension students for years.

Malton is often a forgotten part of Mississauga, she says.
Pearson International Airport creates a physical, and social, barrier between it and the rest of the city. The area is more connected to Rexdale in Toronto and southeastern Brampton culturally, economically and socially.
According to the 2016 Census almost 85 percent of Malton residents were visible minorities; the largest groups were South Asian-Canadians, Chinese-Canadians, Black-Canadians, Filipino-Canadians, Latino-Canadians and Arab-Canadians. Residents were, on average, more than two years younger than the city overall, and occupied some of the most demanding blue-collar jobs in manufacturing, transportation and logistics support and warehouse work.
Parrish and Mayor Bonnie Crombie before her, who represented Malton prior to becoming the head of Council, have highlighted the many inequities residents in the area struggle with.
Cristina considered switching schools due to the Catholic Boards failure to invest in sports facilities and clubs at Ascension.
I kind of was turned off by the fact that we didnt have all these facilities and resources, and I was kind of considering not going to Ascension.
Cristina agrees with Parrish: her school community is being left behind.
It's not only Ascension, it's Malton as a whole we're neglected and it's totally unfair and inequitable.
Cristina Verdoliva (bottom right) was on the Ascension soccer team in Grade 9.

The inequality is frustrating for Cristina and her fellow students. She says many felt the inferior treatment when they saw the Malton Youth Hub and the state-of-the-art turf field being built beside Lincoln M. Alexander Secondary School by the public board. It raises questions, she says.
Not being able to have your school support a home game where all your friends come, they're cheering your team on, not being able to experience that really does have an effect on us, she said.
Parrish was a driving force behind the youth hub, and is now pushing the Catholic Board to also create equitable opportunities for Malton students.
Ascension Catholic High School was built as a middle school, so space constraints have been a problem over the years.

There is nothing within close walking distance from Ascension that students can engage with to keep occupied, Cristina said. A small strip mall located across from the school recently closed leaving students with even fewer options.
I see them walking around the community on their lunch, it's so sad, Grazia, Cristinas mother says. They are walking around like zombies because they have nowhere to go. That time could be spent kicking a ball on the beautiful turf field or running around on the track.
Community advocates are concerned that students are turning away from the school. The DPCDSB as a whole has seen its enrolment decline 10.5 percent since the 2018/19 school year.
Parents have seen the lack of attention to sports and other activities at Ascension for more than a decade.
Flavienne Sagna-Layne has been on the Ascension Parents Committee for years, and says long before she joined, there was a demand for a new soccer field and track.
She says the Ascension community has been asking for an upgraded facility for 14 years.
Sagna-Layne has two sons in Grades 10 and 11 at Ascension, both avid athletes who have been impacted by the lack of facilities at the school. After the frustration with the board, she took her sons and three of their friends to Saint Marcellinus, another Catholic high school, located in Mississaugas Meadowvale neighbourhood, to see the outdoor track hoping it would spark something in them.
They were shocked, Sagna-Layne told The Pointer. The group of boys decided to create a petition and a video informing the student body of the unequal treatment by the Board.
They went and presented it to student council, and all of them were like, what, how come we don't have (what Saint Marcellinus has) and Lincoln is getting a hub and the field? They were all pumped up, the students absolutely are behind it, Sagna-Layne said.
The Malton Youth Hub will have direct access to PDSBs Lincoln M. Alexander Secondary School.

Cristina hopes she was one of the last graduates to pass through Ascension without a new soccer field and track.
I want to belong to a school that I know cares about their athleticsI personally didn't feel like I was part of a facility that kind of cared about athletics. I know our students did, but I can't say the same about the school board.

What is Artificial Intelligence? Guide to AI | eWEEK – eWeek
Posted: at 5:21 pm
By any measure, artificial intelligence (AI) has become big business.
According to Gartner, customers worldwide will spend $62.5 billion on AI software in 2022. And it notes that 48 percent of CIOs have either already deployed some sort of AI software or plan to do so within the next twelve months.
All that spending has attracted a huge crop of startups focused on AI-based products. CB Insights reported that AI funding hit $15.1 billion in the first quarter of 2022 alone. And that came right after a quarter that saw investors pour $17.1 billion into AI startups. Given that data drives AI, its no surprise that related fields like data analytics, machine learning and business intelligence are all seeing rapid growth.
But what exactly is artificial intelligence? And why has it become such an important and lucrative part of the technology industry?

In some ways, artificial intelligence is the opposite of natural intelligence. If living creatures can be said to be born with natural intelligence, man-made machines can be said to possess artificial intelligence. So from a certain point of view, any thinking machine has artificial intelligence.
And in fact, one of the early pioneers of AI, John McCarthy, defined artificial intelligence as the science and engineering of making intelligent machines.
In practice, however, computer scientists use the term artificial intelligence to refer to machines doing the kind of thinking that humans have taken to a very high level.
Computers are very good at making calculations at taking inputs, manipulating them, and generating outputs as a result. But in the past they have not been capable of other types of work that humans excel at, such as understanding and generating language, identifying objects by sight, creating art, or learning from past experience.
But thats all changing.
Today, many computer systems have the ability to communicate with humans using ordinary speech. They can recognize faces and other objects. They use machine learning techniques, especially deep learning, in ways that allow them to learn from the past and make predictions about the future.
So how did we get here?

Many people trace the history of artificial intelligence back to 1950, when Alan Turing published Computing Machinery and Intelligence. Turings essay began, I propose to consider the question, Can machines think?' It then laid out a scenario that came to be known as a Turing Test. Turing proposed that a computer could be considered intelligent if a person could not distinguish the machine from a human being.
In 1956, John McCarthy and Marvin Minsky hosted the first artificial intelligence conference, the Dartmouth Summer Research Project on Artificial Intelligence (DSRPAI). It convinced computer scientists that artificial intelligence was an achievable goal, setting the foundation for several decades of further research. And early forays into AI technology developed bots that could play checkers and chess.
The 1960s saw the development of robots and several problem-solving programs. One notable highlight was the creation of ELIZA, a program that simulated psychotherapy and provided an early example of human-machine communication.
In the 1970s and 80s, AI development continued but at a slower pace. The field of robotics in particular saw significant advances, such as robots that could see and walk. And Mercedes-Benz introduced the first (extremely limited) autonomous vehicle. However, government funding for AI research decreased dramatically, leading to a period some refer to as the AI winter.
Interest in AI surged again in the 1990s. The Artificial Linguistic Internet Computer Entity (ALICE) chatbot demonstrated that natural language processing could lead to human-computer communication that felt far more natural than what had been possible with ELIZA. The decade also saw a surge in analytic techniques that would form the basis of later AI development, as well as the development of the first recurrent neural network architecture. This was also the decade when IBM rolled out its Deep Blue chess AI, the first to win against the current world champion.
The first decade of the 2000s saw rapid innovation in robotics. The first Roombas began vacuuming rugs, and robots launched by NASA explored Mars. Closer to home, Google was working on a driverless car.
The years since 2010 have been marked by unprecedented increases in AI technology. Both hardware and software developed to a point where object recognition, natural language processing, and voice assistants became possible. IBMs Watson won Jeopardy. Siri, Alexa, and Cortana came into being, and chatbots became a fixture of modern retail. Google DeepMinds AlphaGo beat human Go champions. And enterprises in all industries have begun deploying AI tools to help them analyze their data and become more successful.
Now AI is truly beginning to evolve past some of the narrow and limited types into more advanced implementations.

Different groups of computer scientists have proposed different ways of classifying the types of AI. One popular classification uses three categories:
Another popular classification uses four different categories:
While these classifications are interesting from a theoretical standpoint, most organizations are far more interested in what they can do with AI. And that brings us to the aspect of AI that is generating a lot of revenue the AI use cases.
Also see: Three Ways to Get Started with AI
The possible AI use cases and applications for artificial intelligence are limitless. Some of todays most common AI use cases include the following:
Of course, these are just some of the more widely known use cases for AI. The technology is seeping into daily life in so many ways that we often arent fully aware of them.

So where is the future of AI? Clearly it is reshaping consumer and business markets.
The technology that powers AI continues to progress at a steady rate. Future advances like quantum computing may eventually enable major new innovations, but for the near term, it seems likely that the technology itself will continue along a predictable path of constant improvement.
Whats less clear is how humans will adapt to AI. This question poses questions that loom large over human life in the decades ahead.
Many early AI implementations have run into major challenges. In some cases, the data used to train models has allowed bias to infect AI systems, rendering them unusable.
In many other cases, business have not seen the financial results they hoped for after deploying AI. The technology may be mature, but the business processes surrounding it are not.
The AI software market is picking up speed, but its long-term trajectory will depend on enterprises advancing their AI maturity, said Alys Woodward, senior research director at Gartner.
Successful AI business outcomes will depend on the careful selection of use cases, Woodware added. Use cases that deliver significant business value, yet can be scaled to reduce risk, are critical to demonstrate the impact of AI investment to business stakeholders.
Organizations are turning to approaches like AIOps to help them better manage their AI deployments. And they are increasingly looking for human-centered AI that harnesses artificial intelligence to augment rather than to replace human workers.
In a very real sense, the future of AI may be more about people than about machines.
