Why we can’t tackle the environmental emergency without tackling racism – Greenpeace UK
Posted: July 25, 2022 at 2:59 am
Confronting injustice
For decades, Indigenous Peoples, people of colour and their allies have been fighting environmental racism, and highlighting its many injustices. Today, a new report from Greenpeace and the Runnymede Trust gathers these stories and struggles together. It should be a rallying point for those already working on racial justice issues, and a call for the wider environmental movement to join them.
The report cites examples of environmental racism from all over the world, but they all connect back to the UK. Its crucial to understand our countrys central role in these injustices. The UK is the birthplace of the industrial revolution, a global financial hub, and an imperial power that has invaded or colonised practically every country on earth. This ubiquity has left our fingerprints on all the overlapping crises of our age, and gives us a special responsibility for how they play out. The centuries of exploitation and discrimination is behind the environmental inequalities that split our world apart today.
People of colour across the globe are disproportionately losing their lives and livelihoods as a result of the environmental emergency. These impacts fall heaviest on those who did the least to cause them and have the least resources to be able to cope with it. Much of the carbon from fossil fuels in the atmosphere today came from Europe, the US and other wealthy countries in the global north, yet nearly all the countries most impacted by the climate crisis are in the global South.
Beating an indigo vat by hand, Allahabad, India, 1877, by French photographer Oscar Mallitte. In the early 19th century, British colonisers exploited people, land and resources, establishing indigo plantations across India to farm and process this highly profitable crop. The demand for the blue dye in Europe gave it a status similar to commodities like tea, coffee, silk, and gold. SSPL/Getty Images
These injustices, and the exploitative relationships that underpin them, are the legacy of colonialism. The British empire, and the corporations it sponsored, raked in enormous riches from slavery, cheap labour and the plunder of raw materials worth trillions of dollars. Thanks to technological advantages and colonial oppression, rich countries have squeezed huge profits out of the fossil fuel economy while setting the globe on a path of dependence on fossil fuels and causing much of the associated emissions, leaving the global South poorer and more exposed to the environmental emergency as a result.
The treatment of entire groups of people as inferior or less deserving of a decent life is still allowing governments and industry to dump environmental impacts on to the global South. Since the heaviest impacts of the climate crisis fall onto poorer, less powerful countries, fossil fuel giants and governments in the global North feel less pressure to get to grips with the problem. Since the UKs plastic waste is shipped off to some of these same countries, the plastic industry and our government can get away with not tackling our plastic problem at the source. And since its mostly Indigenous peoples and local in the global South that suffer from the destruction of the worlds rainforests to produce palm oil, meat or timber, companies and governments can carry on chopping down this climate-critical ecosystems with near impunity.
Fridays for the future MAPA (Most Affected People and Areas) activists, calling on the UK Government and world leaders to stop failing us on the climate crisis, outside the 26th UN Climate Change Conference, (COP26), in Glasgow, UK, November 2021. Activists (from left) are Farzana Faruck (Bangladesh), Maria Reyes (Mexico) Jakapita Faith Kandanda (Namibia), Edwin Moses Namakanga (Uganda). Their placards read Pay your climate debt, Climate reparations, Denial is not a policy! and You cant cheat nature. Jeremy Sutton-Hibbert / Greenpeace
As it will be clear by now, these are huge and complex issues. Theres no single magic bullet that will solve them all at one stroke. But recognising these inequalities and where they come from has to be the first step towards putting them right.
These are some of the things that need to happen if we are to tackle the fundamental injustice at the heart of the nature and climate crisis:
The fight for the environment is a fight for equality and justice. And the simple truth is that environmentalism that excludes people of colour and other marginalised groups can never win. It will miss out on a wealth of knowledge modern and traditional on how people can live well with nature. But just as importantly, it will miss out on the energy of those with the biggest stake in its success. The environment connects to everything. Its time environmentalism did too.

A NYT Article About Haiti Is Further Proof That Black History Only Matters When White People Tell It – Yahoo News
Posted: at 2:59 am
Recently, I got a barrage of the same text message. The New York Times wrote about Haiti and it was important because The New York Times wrote about it.
The Timespublisheda lengthy article about the history of Haiti and its interaction (read: abuse) with the rest of the world on May 20, 2022. The article was long and interesting; It was well-researched. It was thoughtful, it was objective and it was careful.
It was also not new.
The article itself discusses the double debt and ransom placed upon post-colonial Haiti after their victory of freedom over the French. It covers Haitis dictators, the occupation by the United States and the democratic election of Jean Bertrand Aristide.
One of the authors, Catherine Porter, appeared on The Dailywhere she further explored the research and answered any questions that may have been lingering.
During her appearance on The Daily, one of the quotes that stood out the most is what she had to say about when you ask people about Haitis poverty.
The answer you normally get when you ask people this deeper why is corruption. Porter asserts.
I wonder if the people Ms. Porter was referring to included Haitians. Im almost certain it did not. Seemingly small, referring to the mainstream (read: white) as the normative is dangerous and it is violent. You seldom meet a Haitian person in the United States that does not know this. While anecdotal, Ive heard several times from strangers, often when I point out Haitians contribution to the world, that you never meet a Haitian that wont tell you about the history (and thereby present-day) of Haiti. Its commonplace. Perhaps this was Ms. Porters experience, but to position it as the norm is to emphasize ones own privilege and existence.
Suggesting theyve broken a case in the why of Haitis poverty is excruciatingly oblivious and purposely naive.
Its a fair point to make that many folks blame the poverty in Haiti on corruption amongst government officials. The reference in both the interview and the article requires more attention.
Story continues
The thing about corruption is it seldom lives in a silo. There is an assumption that the corruption that exists in Haiti is shouldered by the Haitian government. It is. Though, it is encouraged and perpetuated by world powers, including the United States. The Times does mention the external participation in the ousting of Aristide. But it does not discuss the decades and decades of U.S. participation in Haitian politics, their support of the Duvalier dictatorship, their creation of puppet governments and the overall perpetuation of the idea that Haiti just cant seem to get it together. The United States has groomed future leaders of Haiti and then wagged its finger at them once theyve completed their bidding.
This superficial mention of corruption with little to no background, foundation and analysis leaves the reader believing that corruption is an open and closed case that it is something that we can continue to blame.
Im not a hater. Im happy that the New York Times has presented this information to a different audience. I wrote my Masters thesis about traditional and neo-colonial relationships with Haiti, much of which included the information shared in the article. I dont believe many have two years to research and read about the history of Haiti, but I know that the information exists.
And this is the unfairness in their argument. The article perpetuates what people of color continue to fight against: white people saying something matters more than when Black people say it.
When it comes to international development work and its coverage, its an unfortunate commonplace. White privilege envelopes the researchers, writers and podcast hosts in a shroud of gold, their assertions are worthy of attention. And if they say its new information, then it must be.
The story is about access, white privilege and about the power to change a narrative when one feels like it. The article and the platform it appears on present a consistent, frightful juxtaposition: liberation can only be achieved should white people decide so. This information is deeply connected to liberation, as it can be monetized, celebrated and, in this case, believed. It disavows the homework assignments and the arguments over dinner and, what Haitians love the most, the political conversations over dominoes, fritay, at barbershops or during Sunday exchanges.
Pulitzer-prize winning journalist and Founder of The Haitian Times,Garry Pierre-Pierre,respondedto the article thoughtfully, suggesting it doesnt matter who gets the credit. I respectfully disagree. Though he did make me think twice.
The thing about The New York Times article is that it reinforces an uncomfortable truth: the only things that matter are the things that come out of the mouth of white people; Black history isnt interesting or titillating or oppressive until white people say so. And when white people take credit for work that has already been done many times over, it continues this narrative that they are the intellect, the bringer of truths, the ones worthy of trust.
The New York Times says that this work hadnt been done before, that the numbers were buried, that no one knows this history. The New York Times ignores the stories Haitians have been telling their children for generations; these sentences allude to an idea that the research hadnt been done previously. Its tacit erasure.
I wonder if the New York Times considered the Haitian academics. (A few contemporary ones were included in writing the article, while there were Haitians whose opinions were included.) Ms. Porter also made sure to point out that they used a number of Haitian and Haitian American translators on the ground in Haiti and Florida. TheHaitian Timeshosted the NYT authors on a panel on June 20, where I asked this question and another about the role of white privilege in their telling of Haitis story. Time ran out before it got to be answered.
The fact that one white woman, two white men and a woman from East Africa got to tell the story of Haiti as the experts is an indication of a racism that may never cease. Again, this is not hate. This is an observation of the systems that maintain oppression.
And that is my issue. White supremacy isnt the authors fault, but they surely participate and benefit from it.

AMERICA/BRAZIL – "Fake news, religion and politics": online course to combat disinformation and strengthen the commitment to truth – Agenzia…
Posted: at 2:56 am
Brasilia (Agenzia Fides) - "Develop the ability to verify the news, exercise the Christian attitude of spreading the truth and form a network of news fact-checkers in the Church": This is the objective of the online course "Fake News, Religion and Politics" that will be held from August 8 to 12, from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., promoted by the Episcopal Commission for the Pastoral Care of Communication, by the Communication Department of the Episcopal Conference (CNBB) and by the Pastoral for Communication (Pascom-Brazil), in collaboration with other realities involved in this field. According to the note sent to Agenzia Fides, the free training course foresees 300 participants and will take place on the Zoom platform. It has been promoted taking into account the substantial increase in the dissemination of false news (fake news), in order to offer adequate training to communication pastoral agents and other pastoral movements and various Church bodies. The auxiliary bishop of Rio de Janeiro and general secretary of the CNBB, Monsignor Joel Portella Amado, underlines: "we are frightened by various situations of our time, present in the world and, of course, also in Brazil. Among these is the spread of so-called fake news". According to the Bishop, it is a phenomenon that, with the aim of weakening people and society, must be identified, understood and vehemently rejected. The commitment to the truth is, without a doubt, a Christian demand, but "it concerns all people, regardless of their faith, because when we renounce the truth, we also renounce our human condition". There are social groups that today use fake news to produce misinformation and build false narratives about history, human beings and the truth of the facts, with the clear objective of hurting people and destabilizing democracy, observes the auxiliary bishop of Belo Horizonte and president of the Episcopal Communication Commission of the CNBB, Monsignor Joaquim Giovani Mol. "As Christians, our duty is to always seek truth and correct information based on real data. Our pastoral duty is to fight and prevent the spread of disinformation and strengthen our commitment to the truth". Pascom-Brazil coordinator Marcus Tullius says that the desire is to move towards strengthening a network of Catholic pastoral agents capable of monitoring and addressing this complex phenomenon of fake news. "The partners in the realization of this initiative have embraced the cause, because we are convinced that it is necessary to fight against disinformation and this is done with well-trained people. It is a very difficult task, but, echoing Pope Francis, we reaffirm that we must believe in the 'contagious' power of kindness. It is a first step, but significant for the context in which we live". Among the topics that will be addressed by qualified speakers: Democracy and disinformation; Truth and Religion: Christian Commitment: Methods of Verification; Verification tools and techniques; Proposals to combat disinformation. ‘This is The Real Fake News’: DC Fans Lash Out After Henry Cavill Man of Steel 2 SDCC Announcement Rumours Turn Out To Be a Massive Dud – FandomWire
Posted: at 2:56 am
The San Diego Comic-Con or SDCC has been one of the most anticipated events for 2022 for every comic geek or nerd that exists. The impact of the information revealed in the comic con from different studios is so high that most fans cannot wait to gather it all up.
So you can just imagine how horrible DC fans must have felt when their all-time favorite Henry Cavill failed to show up, especially since they all expected news about the future projects involving Superman.
On Wednesday, a rumor regarding the alleged appearance of Henry Cavill at the then-upcoming, San Diego Comic-Con rose up high in the DCEU Fandom.
Most of the fans were more than excited to be able to discuss the return of Superman if announced and even held hopes to see their most beloved director Zack Snyder be there as well.
The report by Deadline stated that they had heard a buzz that Henry Cavil may be surprising the fans at SDCC this year with news about his DC character from Man Of Steel, Superman.
Like every rumor, this too began to spread through the Superman fandom like wildfire, burning every fan with third-degree burns.
All of this was supposed to happen at Warner Bros. Saturday Hall-H Panel. This truly hyped up the DC fans who then proceeded to swarm the Hall-H Panel with expectations as high the Mount Everest.

Of course, just like on Mount Everest, an avalanche was upcoming and the fans were not, under any circumstances, prepared for it. It is no doubt that DC suffered huge losses in the trust of its fans as they all realized, with a broken heart, that the rumor of Henry Cavill showing up at SDCC was just that; a rumor.
No amount of consoling could calm down the fans when Warner Bros. only introduced their already announced Black Adam and Shazam! Fury Of The Gods movies.

According to sources, it was never even considered to bring Henry Cavill to SDCC this year. There was no arrangements to announce any upcoming Superman projects at all.
This blow to the fans was deepened when DC proceeded to decline any further notices about its other upcoming projects like The Flash and Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom
Black Adam will be released on HBO Max on October 21, 2022 and Shazam! Fury Of The Gods will premiere on the same platform on December 21, 2022.

How a Muslim teen bore the brunt of fake news spread by Hindutva – The Siasat Daily
Posted: at 2:56 am
Hyderabad: On July 7, 17-year-old Mohammad Ashfaq received a voice message on his Instagram profile. It was from an unknown account named @aksharadechamma02. What followed soon after was the start of an ordeal Aashfaq is still reeling from.
The voice message started with abuses accusing Asfhaq of posting comments about the Kodava community and its goddess Cauvery. Confused, Ashfaq tried to reason out with the unknown account user saying that he was innocent.
I told the account user I have no idea what he was talking about. I told him I am not involved in any such activity. After much convincing, that account sent me another voice note. This time he told me to make my Instagram account private and delete all my photos, Ashfaq told Siasat.com over a phone call.
The scared teenager quietly complied.
When Siasat.com checked @aksharadechamma02, the account was found to be private with no display picture. It had 0 posts and 39 followers.
On the same evening, a police complaint was lodged against another Instagram account named @ljvbkoggklvy at the Madikeri police station, Kodagu district. According to members of the Kodava community that lodged the complaint, the account @ljvbkoggklvy wrote derogatory and insulting comments about Goddess Cauvery and Kodava women.
It all started with an Instagram post by @kodavaholics, said Musthafa Siddapur, a local reporter, activist, and social worker in Kodagu district.
According to Mustafa, the issue began on June 30 when the page put up a post in which a girl from the Kodava community can be seen shooting a person chanting Tipu Sultans name. KODAVAHOLICS is an Instagram page that takes pride in Kodava culture.
One particular account, @ljvbkoggklvy, started posting comments insulting the local Gods and Goddess of Kodagu district as well as making derogatory remarks against Kodava women.
This created an uproar and soon other users started calling out @ljvbkoggklvy for its conduct. It soon gathered momentum and spread across the district.
Members from the Kodagu Samaj Virajpet community filed a police complaint asking the person behind the account to be identified and punished. However, Ashfaq and his family were unaware of these developments.
On July 7, even as Ashfaq made his Instagram account private, a sense of dread plagued him. The teenager was confused as to how his name got dragged into something he had no connection with whatsoever.
Soon after, Ashfaq received a series of phone calls on his mobile. He received calls from unknown numbers, with callers threatening to kill Ashfaq and his family. Some callers also called him a terrorist, and pointed fingers at Islam.
I laid down on the bed and stared at the ceiling for days, Ashfaq recalled.
Synuddeen, Ashfaqs 47-year-old father and his wife grew anxious. After much coaxing, Ashfaq opened up about the voice message and phone calls he had received since the morning of July 7.
Soon, the family started seeing Ashfaqs photo clubbed with @ljvbkoggklvys comments. The compilation was circulated everywhere on social media platforms.
Worried how this could be possible, Synuddeen contacted Mustafa Siddapur. Speaking to Siasat.com, the father said, I told Mustafa that my son cannot be involved in such things. He has no idea about the history of Kodagu and its Gods and Goddesses, let alone the importance of the Cauvery River. I knew my son was innocent. I just did not know how his name got dragged into this mess.
Mustafa started investigating the truth behind the photo. His first stop was Facebook. As he searched he came across many accounts that shared the same posts tagging senior police officials, and the Karnataka chief minister to arrest Ashfaq as soon as possible.
There were many comments calling out Ashfaq as a terrorist from ISIS, calling out Islam to be the reason behind this behaviour. Others were saying that Ashfaq will join the Syrian army and that they will finish-off the whole family, and much more, said Mustafa.
Mustafa said that many were death threats. There was one such comment that said if 1 or 2 people beat up Ashfaq the police might catch us, but if more than 100 people beat him up, the police cannot do anything. It was upsetting to see a 17-year-old receive so much hate.
On July 8, Ashfaq and his father decided to lodge a complaint with the cyber police of Madikeri town in Karnataka. Though the police listened to the complaint, they did not register an FIR.
They took my phone and let us go, said Ashfaq.
By that time news had spread and more and more people started blaming the family. There were many complaints lodged in different stations of the district asking Ashfaq to be arrested with immediate effect.
It felt like the whole district was against us. Every Kodava was looking at us from an eye of suspicion, said Synuddeen.
The next day on July 9, Synuddeen and Ashfaq returned to the police station only to be greeted by a large number of police officials. From the circle inspector to the superintendent of police, all were present. They told me they wanted to question Ashfaq, said Synuddeen.
As Ashfaq was being grilled over his alleged involvement in posting derogatory remarks on the Kodava community, right-wing organisations Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Hindu Jagran Vedike released a press statement demanding the teenagers arrest in the next 24 hours. If the arrest did not happen, they threatened to call for a district bandh.
Ashfaqs inquiry carried on until the wee hours of the night. After many tense hours, the police found no evidence and released Ashfaq.
There was so much tension in the house. I and my wife were worried about our son, that he should not take any drastic step. I could not sleep thinking about his safety. The whole family was under a lot of trauma and could not celebrate Bakri Eid as well, said Synuddeen.
The ordeal did not end there. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad and other right-wing organisations called for protests. They demanded that those who insulted their Gods should be arrested and terrorist organisations should be banned.
On July 12, Karnataka chief minister Basavaraj Bommai visited the district to give monetary compensation to a family whose house was completely destroyed due to the heavy rains. Kodagu had been witnessing non-stop rains for many days.
Taking this as an opportunity, right-wing organisations visited the CM and submitted a memorandum requesting to arrest Ashfaq as soon as possible.
As days went by, the pressure was building up for the police to arrest Ashfaq. Continuous press meets and social media pleas, mainly on Facebook and Whatsapp, were made to arrest Ashfaq.
It was like our family versus the entire Kodagu community, said Synuddeen adding, When I would go to the market, people would look at me with suspicious eyes or ask me if my son was really involved.
When asked if there was any help from Muslim organisations, Synuddeen answered in negative. No one came to help us. We were fighting this battle alone.
For nearly a week Ashfaq and his family went through extreme mental pressure. The parents were worried about their childrens future. Apart from Ashfaq, they have two daughters -Shabna Shireen, 14, and ten-year-old Shiyana.
I wondered if I had to leave the town where would we go? Synuddeen said. On July 17, the cyber police of Madikeri had a major breakthrough when they arrested 29-year-old Divin Devaiah, a private employee working in Bengaluru.
Many papers carried the news. However, they got one thing wrong. It is not a Hindu versus a Muslim story. It is Kodava community versus Muslim story, pointed Mustafa.
He also said that a strange thing happened once Divin was caught. Everything came to a sudden stop. The protests by the Hindu groups, the sharing of Ashfaqs pictures on social media platforms, everything stopped. The police also shut the case, he added.
While the police were able to connect Divin to the derogatory comments, it is unclear if he was the reason Ashfaq was accused.
Incidentally, Divin is the son of K Ramesh Ponanna, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and a former Agricultural Produce and Livestock Market Committee (APMC) member.
Ramesh Ponanna is a close aid of BJP MLC Suja Kushalappa, Mustafa claimed.
There are many questions that have been left unanswered. How did Ashfaqs picture get viral? Who shared his picture? Why did the police close the case soon after Divins arrest? Did Divin and Ashfaq know each other? Was there any sort of connection between the two people?
We have never seen Divin. No one from our family has ever interacted with their family members, said Synuddin and Ashfaq.
Though the case has been closed and life is slowly back to normal for Ashfaq, his family has still not healed. We are ok but we have still not come out from the trauma we suffered, said Synuddeen who has decided to lodge a complaint with the police regarding this.
This is not the first case in the country where a Muslim person is targeted through social media. On March 25 this year, a 31-year-old Hindu man was arrested for posing as a Muslim on Facebook. He used the name Mushtaq Ali and threatened BJP MLC D S Arun, son of former chairman of the state legislative council D H Shankarmurthy.
Karnataka has witnessed a searing increase in hate crimes and atrocities against minorities, especially after the Bharatiya Janata Party came to power in the state. According to recent reports, Dakshina Kannada has become a breeding ground for violence against minorities.
Shivamogga and Kodagu districts have long favored a BJP rule, claimed Mohammed Irshad, a local journalist from the state.

NYT writer praises Sri Lanka presidential palace takeover as much more peaceful compared to Jan. 6 riot – Fox News

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!
New York Times writer German Lopez interviewed colleague Emily Schmall about Sri Lanka protesters' takeover of their country's presidential palace in a newsletter published Sunday. During the interview, Lopez compared the Sri Lanka riot to the January 6 riot. The interview also highlighted root causes of the Sri Lanka protests, but neglected to mention the country banning chemical fertilizers.
"Sri Lankas recent upheaval offers an extreme example of the worlds recent problems. Covid disrupted the countrys major industries, particularly tourism, and then leaders failed to adapt setting off a chain of economic calamities, including food and fuel shortages," Lopez wrote.
"The crisis prompted protests, culminating in the presidents resignation and the installation of a new president on Wednesday," he continued.
"For the past six months or so, economic conditions for everyday Sri Lankans have grown increasingly difficult," Schmall said.

Schmall said that "fuel and cooking gas became increasingly expensive and hard to find" while "inflation soared" and "New government import bans" meant fewer "goods from overseas."
The New York Times newsletter did not mention that the Sri Lankan government had also banned chemical fertilizers which environmentalists had blamed for water pollution.
Myron Ebell, the director of the Competitive Enterprise Institute's Center for Energy and Environment, noted that because of this, "all the crop yields have collapsed, they don't have any tea to sell because the tea harvest is so low. So, they have no revenues to buy stuff from overseas and their own food production for people to eat in Sri Lanka is not there. They're starving to death."
"This is all the result of a government decision to limit the access to commercial fertilizer," Ebell told Fox News Digital.
RECESSION IS HERE AND WILL LAST FOR AWHILE,' FORMER WHITE HOUSE ECONOMIST SAYS
Schmall continued, "In Sri Lanka, theres a sizable middle class. People are not used to scarcity, so they noticed immediately when things started disappearing from shelves. People were upset about that. And the ability to carry on became all but impossible in the last month or so."

Because of this, Schmall argued, the protesters intruded the palace. "But the protesters didnt ransack the place. They started inviting the public to come in, but in an orderly fashion," she said. "After about 24 hours, a gleefulness overtook the place, and some people swam in the presidents pool."
"Theyd done it: They had forced this extremely powerful president who was accused of war crimes, who was feared to leave his own home and even the country. But they did it peacefully, without taking up arms," she said. She described these events as "a very Sri Lankan sort of revolution" that was "relatively low-key and polite."
"I cant help but compare this to the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. This seemed much more peaceful," Lopez remarked.
"Oh, yeah. I couldnt help thinking of it either," Schmall agreed. "There were several differences. For one, these people were not armed. It was also a bit spontaneous, and there was no clear leader. They did not do it in association with any politician or political party."

She continued, "But the big difference was that these protesters had widespread support. Ordinary Sri Lankans were applauding them and even participating. People who would otherwise never be involved in activism or protests were happily wandering around the properties, enjoying themselves and basking in the success of this movement."
Some, such as comedian Tim Young, slammed The Times for the comparison. "YOU CANT MAKE THIS UP! The New York Times says that Sri Lankans forcefully overthrowing their government was much more peaceful than January 6. And I bet they still wonder why they're called Fake News" he tweeted.

Fake news problem: Cases of fake news have been on the rise for the past few years. Sometimes fake news also becomes the reason for riots and violence. At the same time, religion also plays an important role in inciting hatred, but the question arises: why are the cases of fake news continuously increasing? This reason was revealed by a research report, according to which the mode of viewing and reading information is changing among young people.
Young people today watch news from social media platforms which is very dangerous because people on social media change the news according to their own and this gives rise to fake news.
UK research report revealed
According to a UK-based study, young Britons use social media platforms such as Instagram, Tiktok and YouTube to get their news. Social media is not the main source of information. In such situation, news is presented on these platforms as per their wish, it helps a lot to spread fake news.
People of this age read social media news
According to Ofcoms latest report from Bitrain, most young people read the news via Instagram. Instagram remains a major source of information among young people. Four Muslim youth arrested over namaz inside Lulu Mall: How the usual suspects in media spread fake news to malign Hindus – OpIndia
Posted: at 2:56 am
The Lucknow police on Tuesdayarrestedfour persons for performing Namaz at the newly opened Lulu mall in thestate capital, videos of which had gone viral on the internet and sparked a massive controversy. The arrested men were identified as Mohammad Rehan, Aatif Khan, Mohammad Lokman, and Mohammad Noman.
The suspects were arrested under sections 153A(1), 341, 505, and 295A of the Indian Penal Code.
The development came days after social media platforms were awash with videos from Lulu Mall in Lucknow, where a group of men were seen offering namaz. The videos triggered a raging controversy over the use of public places for religious purposes. Several Hindu organisations protested against turning the mall into a place of worship, with many announcing Hanuman Chalisa and Sundar Kand recitals inside the mall.
One such protest by Hindu organisations took place on July 15, three days after Muslim men performed namaz inside the Lulu Mall. However, police arrested three men, ostensibly Hindus, for gathering at the mall entrance and reciting Sundar Kand. Later on Twitter, the Lucknow police shared a press note informing about the arrest.
However, the usual suspects, forever on the prowl to shield Islamists, quickly pounced on the press note and twisted it to malign Hindus. Citing the Hindus arrested in the case, they weaved a warped narrative that involved painting apprehended Hindus as Muslims and accusing them of defaming the Muslim community by assuming their identity and performing namaz inside the mall.
Arfa Khanum Sherwani, a journalist with the leftist propaganda website The Wire and known for her penchant for spreading fake news, peddled disinformation that Sanghis were arrested for offering namaz inside the mall.
Her colleague, Rohini Singh, also joined her in the routine exercise of shielding Islamists. Without sharing evidence to substantiate her claims, Singh took to Twitter to declare that those offering namaz at Lulu Mall in Lucknow were actors who wanted to stir social unrest. Singh also pontificated that it does not behove good on the majority that actors knew that people would get triggered at the sight of namaz inside the mall.
In less than 24 hours since Singh posted her tweet, the Lucknow police revealed the names of youth arrested for offering namaz in the mall, all of whom turned out to be Muslims. Yet, Singh did not bother to delete her tweet or offer an apology for peddling disinformation on Twitter.
Radio Mirchis Sayema, who has often displayed little hesitation in promoting fake news that serves to bolster Islamist propaganda, also shared the misinformation being peddled about the arrest of Hindu men. Sayema quoted Khabeers tweet and promoted the misinformation that Hindu men posed as Muslims to offer namaz inside the mall.
Ahmed Khabeer, Editor of the Islamist propaganda portal The Jamia Times, shared a screenshot of a tweet posted by Lucknow Police to allege that Hindus posing as Muslims had offered namaz in the mall.
However, the arrest of four persons involved in namaz inside the Lulu Mall and their identities revealed has served as a body blow to the usual suspects who had desperately tried to implicate Hindus in the matter so as to cover up for the Islamists and their tendency to turn public spaces into places for communal prayers.
The Lulu mall in Lucknow, the largest in Uttar Pradesh, was embroiled in a conspiracy just days after it opened after a video of a few people offering Namaz inside the mall went viral on July 12. In reaction to the incident, the Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha announced that a Sundarkand recital will be held within the mall. The Hindu Mahasabha cancelled the Sundarkand recitalafter the malls management apologised for the Namaz incident.
