The 15 Most-Divorced Cities in the US – Money Talks News

Editor's Note: This story originally appeared on ChamberOfCommerce.org.
Marriage and divorce in the U.S. today are starkly different than in earlier eras of the countrys history.
A series of economic, legal, and social shifts reshaped marriage in the second half of the 20th century. More women began working outside of the home in the post-World War II era, which provided avenues to financial security and independence outside of marriage. Greater emphasis on postsecondary educational attainment and career development have led young people to wait longer to enter marriage.
States began to adopt no-fault divorce laws throughout the 1960s and 1970s that made it easier to end a marriage. Meanwhile, changing social and cultural attitudes have made it more common for couples to cohabitate, combine finances, and raise children prior to getting married or without getting married at all.
These trends have contributed to a decline in the overall number of marriages and to delays in when people get married for the first time. In the U.S., there are currently only 6.5 marriages per 1,000 people each year, compared with 10.9 five decades ago.
These shifts have also affected how likely married couples are to stay together. As women entered the workforce in the mid-20th century and feminism and the sexual revolution took hold, rates of divorce rose quickly throughout the 1960s and 1970s. From 1960 to 1980, the divorce rate per 1,000 people in the U.S. more than doubled from 2.2 to 5.2. But the rate began to fall steadily after 1980, and as of 2018, the rate of divorce had dropped to 2.9 per 1,000 people.
To determine the most divorced locations, researchers at ChamberOfCommerce.org calculated the percentage of adults currently divorced. The data used in this analysis is from the U.S. Census Bureaus 2020 American Community Survey.
Here are the most-divorced cities in the U.S.

The data used in this analysis is from the U.S. Census Bureaus 2020 American Community Survey. To determine the most-divorced locations, researchers calculated the percentage of adults currently divorced.
In the event of a tie, the location with the higher percentage of adults currently separated was ranked higher. It is important to note that the category currently married excludes those married but currently separated, and that the percentages dont sum to 100% because the currently widowed percentage is omitted. To improve relevance, only cities with at least 100,000 residents were included.

The Recorder – Beacon Hill Roll Call: June 20 to June 24, 2022 – The Recorder
Posted: at 9:19 pm
Beacon Hill Roll Call records representatives votes on a roll call from the week of June 20 to June 24. There were no roll calls in the Senate last week.
The House, 155 to 0, approved and sent to the Senate a nearly $11 billion transportation and infrastructure package that includes $400 million for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) to address safety problems identified by the Federal Transit Administrations Safety Management Inspection and $250 million for initial steps toward a western Massachusetts rail extension.
Other provisions include $2.8 billion for projects on the interstate and non-interstate federal highway system, $82 million for rail improvements, $1 billion for transit system modernization and rail improvements, and $114 million for the Airport Improvement Program. Theres also $200 million to create an extensive electric vehicle charging infrastructure; fund programs that promote e-bikes, public transportation and car sharing; replace high-emissions vehicles; and acquire electric school buses.
House members filed more than 300 amendments, many dealing with local projects in legislators home districts, but there was little debate and not a single roll call vote on any individual amendment. Instead, members made their cases behind closed doors to the leadership and all the amendments that were given the green light ended up in one consolidated mega-amendment with a price tag estimated at $500 million.
Ensuring that the commonwealths transportation infrastructure is adequately funded is a top priority for the House, which is why Im proud of the legislation passed today, said House Speaker Ron Mariano, D-Quincy. In addition to significant funding for roadway and bridge projects, this bill also recognizes the importance of providing further support for the MBTA in their ongoing effort to address safety concerns and for the ever-important east-west rail project.
This legislation sets the table for the next administration to take full advantage of the additional billions of dollars, both state and federal, for critical transportation projects throughout the state, said Rep. Bill Straus, D-Mattapoisett, House chair of the Committee on Transportation. The House has wisely used the bill as an opportunity to again demonstrate its commitment to roads, bridges and public transit.
A Yes vote is for the package.
Rep. Natalie Blais Yes
Rep. Paul Mark Yes
Rep. Susannah Whipps Yes
Gov. Charlie Baker signed into law the bill making permanent the mail-in and early voting options used in Massachusetts in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. This version of the bill did not include the controversial section allowing same-day voter registration.
The measure requires the secretary of state to send out mail-in ballot applications, with return postage, to registered voters before each presidential primary, state primary and biennial state election. It also allows registered voters to request a mail-in ballot for all elections in a single calendar year.
Other provisions include reducing the registration blackout period from 20 days prior to an election to 10 days; electronic voting options for voters with disabilities and military service members; allowing a voter with disabilities to request accommodations including an accessible electronic ballot application, ballot and voter affidavit that can be submitted electronically; ensuring that non-felons who are incarcerated who are eligible to vote are provided with voting information and materials to exercise their right to vote; and requiring the secretary of state to conduct a comprehensive public awareness campaign to publicize the new voting and registration options.
My office has anticipated this new law and preparations are already well underway for the Sept. 6 state primaries, commented Secretary of State William Galvin. Every voter in Massachusetts can expect to receive a pre-addressed, postage pre-paid vote by mail application in just a few weeks. Voters who prefer to vote in person will be able to take advantage of expanded in-person early voting or vote at their polling place on election day.
This landmark election reform bill will empower voters and strengthen our democracy, said Sen. Barry Finegold, D-Andover, Senate chair of the Committee on Election Laws and co-sponsor of the measure. In 2020, mail-in and early voting options helped generate record-breaking turnout. (The new law) builds upon this progress and will help ensure that every voter can exercise their fundamental right to vote.
The most secure way to vote is in person and on election day, said Paul Craney, spokesperson for the Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance. Handing over your ballot to the United States Postal Service does not guarantee your vote will count. Its rather disappointing the governor and Democratic lawmakers are pursuing this new law (that) is less secure.
In the meantime, Massachusetts Republican Party Chair Jim Lyons filed a lawsuit aimed at overturning the Legislatures passage of the part of the new law that codifies universal no-fault mail-in voting. He said the Massachusetts Constitution lists only three instances whereby citizens can vote absentee during elections: If theyre out of town, physically disabled or have a religious-based conflict with election day.
Theres a reason why we have three branches of government, and were confident that the Supreme Judicial Court will strike down and expose the Democrats unconstitutional permanent expansion of mail-in voting, Lyons said.
The House gave initial approval to legislation that would change a current law that imposes a fine of between $500 and $1,000 on any all-terrain vehicle (ATV) or other recreational vehicle driver who leaves the scene, without giving information to the driver of the other vehicle, of a hit and run accident that does not result in death. The bill would impose the same fine but would also add the possibility of a one-year prison sentence. The bill also creates a new crime of leaving the scene of an accident that results in a death and imposes up to a $5,000 fine and/or 2.5 years in prison for that new crime.
The bill, dubbed the James Ward Act, was filed in response to the tragic death of a young man in the district of sponsor Rep. Kathy LaNatra, R-Kingston. According to LaNatras office, James Ward was riding ATVs with his father and his brother. He collided with another driver, who told James father that he would go get help, but he never returned to the scene. The young man later succumbed to his injuries.
I filed this legislation to prevent ATV riders from fleeing the scene of an accident and ensure that they are held accountable for their actions, LaNatra said. I want to ensure that what the Ward family went through on that tragic day doesnt happen again.
The House approved and sent to the Senate a bill that would expand current law and make more farmers eligible for a favorable valuation of property process that results in a tax break. Under current law, to be eligible for the favorable valuation and the resulting tax break, a farmer must own and be farming a minimum of five contiguous acres of land. The bill would reduce the required number to two and not require the acres to be contiguous.
Supporters said that farming practices have been modernized and farmers no longer need vast contiguous acreage to grow crops and manage their livestock. They noted that in eastern Massachusetts, contiguous land is getting harder to acquire.
Farming is changing and it is growing exceedingly difficult for new farmers to find land and for existing farmers to keep the land they have, said the measures sponsor, Rep. Paul Schmid, D-Westport. This bill would extend the benefits of a favorable valuation to small plots, effectively preserving farmland in Massachusetts.

Local mental health clinic offers innovative depression treatment – The Oxford Eagle – Oxford Eagle

Right Tracks clinical team began researching manufacturers that offered the devices needed toprovide TMS treatment. They ultimately landed onBrainsWay, a global technology company that produces TMS magnets that Dr. Pannel said are more unique and specific to patients.
The treatment sessions with BrainsWay devices are also relatively short, clocking in at 18 minutes versus 40 or more minutes with other devices.
When we were first looking into TMS, I felt that time was very, very important for people, he said. Ifwe could save people time and make it more efficient for them, we definitely wantedto do that.
The ease of receiving TMS, Dr.Pannel said, is one of the treatment options advantages. Thesessions are completely outpatient and do not require anesthesia or having someone come along to drive before or after the appointment.
A common concern of potential patients is the procedure itself. Dr. Pannel acknowledged that the treatmentin which a padded helmet is fitted to the patients headlooks strange for those unfamiliar.
For most people, TMS is a very new and unique process. Its always interesting for people attheir first session, but people adjust to it very quickly, he said.
After deciding that the treatment is appropriate, a Right Track psychiatrist works with the patient to tailor the TMS to them and their needs. This is done during a half-hour brain mapping session, during which the provider uses the TMS machine to examine the patientsbrain like another doctor might use x-rays.
Regular 20-minute TMS appointments, which are overseen by one ofthe clinicspsychiatrists or nurse practitioners, begin the next day and typically last for about three to four months.
Once someone begins receiving TMS, family and friends often notice initial improvements. Then, from session five to 10, patients typically notice improvements in mood, sleep and depressive symptoms.
By the end of treatment, Dr. Pannel said, the frequency, severity and intensity of depressive symptoms decrease overall in most patients.
A majority of people Ive treated go into remission and really improve, he said. The success of TMS has even changed Dr.Pannels outlook as a psychiatrist.

The CDO Stack: How to Make the Most of Treasury Management Systems – Commercial Property Executive
Posted: at 9:18 pm
As a self-described lifelong learner, I consider the constant flow of conversations with clients and colleagues about their operational challenges to be one of the many great parts of my job.
Having done this for more than three decades, Ive dealt with enough challenges to offer an informed view about the right solution or best path forward. Interestingly, thats not the case with a treasury management system (TMS). Not that there hasnt been a need for what TMSs have to offer but my clients have tended to support treasury processes with brute-force effort and spreadsheets.
Whats happening with treasury management? During those three decades, I have almost never had a client ask about how to automate treasury processes. But in the past month, no fewer than than five clients have asked for an overview of the TMS landscape, the major offerings, what they do and how to differentiate them. Thankfully, I work with colleagues who specialize in such things and know the answers to these questions. And given my role, I get to listen and learn. Assuming that there are more companies out there with the same question, allow me to share what Ive learned.
First, as with so many solutions, understanding what you want the system to do, and in what priority, is important before you attempt to understand your options. As a quick primer, the major categories of functionality that TMSs provide are: cash and liquidity management, cash and hedge accounting, trade execution and controls, dealing (which includes foreign exchange (FX), money markets, debt facilities, derivatives and investments), management reporting and risk management.
Importantly, TMSs also typically manage interactions with banks, including statement receipt and recordation, payments, and foreign exchange/investment trades and transactions. These services also include bank relationship management, such as opening and closing accounts, changes in signatories and fee analytics.
There are a limited number of solutions in the market that can be stratified in three broad categoriesentry-level, mid-market and top-tier. For most in the real estate industry, entry-level and mid-market solutions will meet your needs. If youre wondering how to think about the different levels in the strata, heres a good rule of thumb: Top-tier solutions are generally aimed at Fortune 100 companies with complex financial operations, many integrations to manage, a complex enterprise resource planning (ERP) environment and where the benefits justify system and implementation complexity. This description fits relatively few companies in the commercial real estate industry.
Mid-market solutions are geared to companies that have complex financial requirements but dont have complexity in ERP systems. These companies are looking for strong end-to-end automation and reduced manual work. They likely have FX and corresponding heading requirements and need robust data visibility. This is perhaps the most competitive segment of the available TMS market and likely the sweet spot for most mid-size to large real estate companies.
Entry-level solutions are exactly what they sound like and are a viable option for many real estate companies that have only domestic operations and are looking to get treasury out of spreadsheets. These systems are generally SaaS, turn-key, and focused on helping with cash management, payment management and integrations with multiple banks. For many CRE organizations, the step from entry-level to mid-market systems is predicated on requirements to deal with FX and short-term investments.
I hope that primer is useful. If youre struggling with understanding your cash position or liquidity and find that your processes are highly manual, you might find that a TMS is a valuable investment.

Cinematographer Bianca Cline on Filming ‘Marcel the Shell With Shoes On’ – The Mary Sue
Posted: at 9:18 pm
They say that big things come in little packages, and thats especially true for Dean Fleischer Camp and Jenny Slates stop-motion character Marcel the Shell with Shoes On. The tender little anthropomorphic shell hit the internet in 2010 with a series of short films and quickly became a YouTube sensation. Now, more than a decade later, Marcel stars in his first feature film, directed by Fleischer Camp with Slate returning to voice the shell. The film is currently in theaters across the country.
But bringing Marcels miniature world to life was no easy feat. We talked to the films cinematographer, Bianca Cline, about the challenges of combining stop-motion with live-action filmmaking. As one of the few trans cinematographers working today, Cline considers it important to tell her story to a new generation of queer and trans filmmakers. She believes her trans identity is not incidental to her creativity, but fuels her practice as an artist. Clines credits include Murder Among the Mormons, Belly of the Beast, and Oreo Proud Parent, a short film for Oreos Pride campaign.
The Mary Sue: How did you get involved with Marcel the Shell with Shoes On? Were you a fan of the shorts or was it new to you?
Bianca Cline: It was totally new, Id never heard of Marcel before, and I got the script through my agent and as soon as I read it I was hooked. Although I will say, there actually wasnt a script when it came there was finished audio, all the dialogue, sound effects, music was all finished and then there were storyboards to go along with it, so I watched it that way. It was kind of like a mini movie, it was a very unique experience for coming to a film but a really lovely one.
TMS: what challenges do you face shooting a stop-motion film? The process itself seems so painstaking.
BC: The film is very, its quite unique, so the process was a blend of live-action mixed with stop-motion. We did it kind of like you would do with a film witha CGI character, where we filmed the movie at a house in Hollywood, where Marcel lives, and we filmed it with a stand-in Marcel. We would put him on a stick or wires and move him through the scene, and we would figure out what the lighting was supposed to be, where focus was going to be, and wed get a reference of what he should look like.
Then wed film it again without him, so we had a clean version, and then the stop-motion was done almost a year later, well it got extended because of Covid, and theres a guy named Eric Adkins (stop-motion director of photography) who was doing the stop motion of Marcel himself, with the same lighting that I created on set, hed match the lenses I used, and then insert Marcel back into the live-action film wed shot. So we were constantly trying to figure out how to make it feel real.
TMS: What drew you to cinematography? Was there a movie or TV series that really made you want to explore this craft?
BC: When I was a kid I used to put on plays, and I was always interested in telling stories that way, and as soon as my family had a camera I commandeered it and made it my own, and I filming whenever I could, and my mom said, you know you could do that as a living?, and it never crossed my mind, even though I grew up in LA. I just always thought, you know, doctor, lawyer, engineer, those are real jobs, and I was instantly like, yep, thats what Im going to do. When I was 16 I saw a movie called Immortal Beloved, and the photography was just gorgeous, and more than that it told the story about music and someone who cant hear, and it was, it was the first time I realized what cinematography can do, that it can make me feel. Like with music, you dont have to say it outright, you can just feel it, and I feel that its my job as cinematographer to make people feel things that they arent necessarily aware of. That movie changed my life.
TMS: Since were coming on the end of Pride Month, do you have a Pride Month must-watch movie?
BC: My favorite movie about queer people in general is either Beginners or a TV show called Veneno (HBO Max). Absolutely amazing, I love that show. Its the best thing Ive seen about being trans.
TMS: As one of the few trans cinematographers working today, what advice do you have for trans and non-binary folks who want to work in the industry and find community in this business?
BC: Its really a puzzle Im trying to figure out. Im very surprised by how few trans people there are in the film industry, at least in camera crew, where I know most of my trans people. It seems like, and I think it is a place that is very open to trans and queer people in general, so its surprising to me that theres not more trans people involved. I think that maybe thats just generational, because people my age didnt grow up in a time where it was more acceptable or that producers were looking for people like us. I think that those things are changing and hopefully will change more. I would say keep pushing. I think theres this strange thing of confidence begets confidence, and its difficult to get confidence without getting started, but I think that if you can fake the confidence for a little bit, it starts to snowball, and you go from there. And then it becomes real. Because you know who you are and you have stories to tell. And queer people in general do have stories to tell!
