The world today is experiencing an unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic. The world economic recovery is unstable and unbalanced, regional conflicts are frequent, and the process of human development has been severely impacted. The United Nations released a report on June 8 that the world is facing the most serious cost of living crisis since the 21st century due to factors such as the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. It is estimated that around 1.6 billion people globally are affected by this crisis, of which around 1.2 billion people are affected by all three dimensions of the crisis - food, energy and finance.

Globally, the cost of living is on the rise, and the world unemployment rate is also rising. According to data from the U.S. Department of Labor, in April 2020, due to the impact of the epidemic, the U.S. unemployment rate was as high as 14.7%. As a key employment group, the youth unemployment rate in the EU and the euro area also fell to 13.9% in April this year.

To help companies cope with the risks and challenges brought by the international environment and the domestic epidemic, since this year, governments around the world have launched electronic tax refund procedures in order to stimulate economic growth and reduce offline contact, providing online tax refund services for overseas tourists. This move, while relieving the financial pressure of enterprises, stabilizes production and expands exports, and promotes the stable development of global trade.

Faced with the current global cross-border trade dilemma, Singapore Holatrade digital marketing service company uses innovative technologies such as Web 3.0 and blockchain, and cooperates with professional teams to launch the HOLA Tax Refund program, aiming to provide 320,000 companies in 52 countries around the world. Roe v. Wade in the dustbin of history – The Spectator Australia

Posted: at 9:22 pm

Democrats havent been so mad since Lincoln freed their slaves. The US Supreme Court has finally put a stop to a veritable river of babies, over 61 million, going to the slaughterhouse, authorised by the illicit ruling in Roe v. Wade, (1973). Each year since, between one in three to one in five of all babies conceived in the US have perished.

Now, in Dobbs v. Jackson Womens Health Organization, the Court has finally done what it should have done in its partial retreat in Planned Parenthood v. Casey (1992).

This reversal has yet again confirmed Donald Trumps place high in the pantheon of great presidents, another addition to his great achievements, domestic and foreign. With all his eventually successful judicial nominations forming part of the 6:3 majority in this case, nominations which the Democrats tried to thwart by unjustified lies and calumnies, he has fulfilled yet another of the several campaign promises he made in 2016. The outrage now is that by refusing proper security measures for the judges, the Democrats are obviously inviting their assassination.

The horror of what was being done under Roe v. Wade was brought home like a parable to Americans, and as well to the world a few years ago, when they saw the controllers of the abortion industry.

Executives of the peak abortionist, Planned Parenthood, were caught in undercover videos joking while negotiating contracts for the sale of intact baby body parts. In one, senior executive Dr Mary Gatter chortled, I want a Lamborghini, when haggling over per-specimen pricing for livers, lungs and brains.

These videos created enormous outrage across the country, reminding people that this was the work of seven delinquent judges who had acted without the shallowest legal justification whatsoever.

We should pause for a moment to ask why mass abortion, justified under spurious constitutional grounds, was given legal effect by judges? Why was it not done by politicians, who after all alone have the role of designing and introducing legislation? And why was this judicial approach then followed in some other countries?

The answer is simple. It could not have been done otherwise.

Any politician who went to the electorate then with Roe v. Wade-like legislation as policy would have lost the election and probably the primary, the American equivalent of an Australian preselection, but far more democratic, especially in the Republican party. (It sounds like another world, but unlike Australia, Americans are actually allowed to choose who they and not the faceless men want as candidates.)

What is crucial to appreciate, is that the America of the time of Roe v. Wade was a country of believers, essentially Judeo-Christian. Not of course the elites who would set the fashion of abandoning religion.

One of the greatest explanations of the madness which exists today in the West is contained in what G.K. Chesterton never actually wrote but which I suspect, is consistent with his thoughts.

My formulation, David Flint Truth Number One, is in the following terms: When a man stops believing in God, its not that he will believe in nothing. He will believe in anything.

I see this everywhere. It explains much of the modern world. I would say that even if you dont believe in God, or what I suspect is more likely you dont know, it is good practice to concede that God might well exist.

This is because the only real alternative to religious belief or faith is not rationalism. Rationlism involves what could be called a different gear-shift.

If you clear your belief area completely of religious faith, other beliefs will come in. And the strongest dogma in the West today is modern Marxism. This is where the proletariat, which refused to cooperate with the Marxists, has been replaced with a moving feast of racial, sexual and so-called gender victims.

The enemy of Marxism, whether classical or the modern variant, is still the same. This is any institution or person which can command greater loyalty or attraction than the Marxists. This clearly includes, in the forefront, the family and private property.

From Engels famous book, Marxists have always detested the family, which is why in communist states it is common to poison childrens minds about their parents. A long-term Marxist ambition has been to reduce the influence and longevity of families. Women in particular are encouraged to play down the role of motherhood as a mere occasional adjunct to their lives with much of the role of mother superficially taken over by the state. Only then, Marxists say, can women be free.

Hence the encouragement of abortion through the manipulation of the US Supreme Court, involving the killing of babies on a truly extraordinary industrial scale.

But the imposition of such an outrage as Roe v. Wade had another object, to take away or reduce the sense of decency the average American had in 1973 to any similar outrage.

If they were prepared to accept such a bloodletting of the innocents, more will be accepted. The sense of decency can become numb.

There are those who call for the introduction of infanticide as well as euthanasia without consent and/or for purposes other than terminal illness.

The delinquent judges not only presided over the slaughter of innocents on an industrial scale. They made accepting such outrage as a normal reaction. They turned people away from religion to accept evil. The damage has been enormous.

In the meantime there is a political and media determination to ensure first that Donald Trump cannot stand for the presidency and if he cannot, that no one else of his school of government can stand.

What is clear is that many right-thinking voters will see in this Supreme Court decision not only a correct application of the Constitution but more reason to hope for a Trumpian second term.

Reward to catch cable thieves as hundreds without internet – Kent Online

Posted: at 9:22 pm

Hundreds of homes and business have been left without broadband, TV and phone services after more than a dozen attacks on underground cables.

Openreach and Crimestoppers are offering a 1,000 reward in a bid to catch thieves who have stripped and damaged large sections of live wiring in a series of locations across Kent this month.

Horsmonden Road, Brenchley was the first location to be targeted, on June 2, having previously been attacked twice before in May.

This was followed by a network in Tonbridge Road, Wateringbury being hit a day later.

Next to be targeted was a network beneath Linton Road, Loose on June 7 with other locations in Bethersden and Deal being targeted around the same time.

The latest location to have its wires cut was in Gillingham on June 21.

Significant damage has also been caused to street furniture and farmland, where cables have been dragged through fields.

Now Crimestoppers are working with Openreach to uncover the culprits and have issued an appeal asking for anyone with information to come forward anonymously.

They have issued a reward of up to 1,000 to anyone with information that results in a conviction.

Openreach engineers are working as quickly as possible to restore services to those customers affected.

Mick Duthie from Crimestoppers, said: The people behind these crimes care little about the consequences or the fact that hundreds of residents and businesses have been badly affected with a loss of vital broadband, telephone and TV services. The impact and disruption cannot be underestimated.

This is not a victimless crime and we are urging anyone with information on those behind the thefts to speak up."

Richard Ginnaw, head of security services for Openreach, said: These incidents have severely impacted the day-to-day lives of people across these areas of Kent throughout June.

We are working closely with the police to catch those who are responsible and have deployed additional security enhancements across the area.

Please be vigilant, and if you saw anything suspicious on or around the time of the incidents, or know who is involved, please report it."

People with information are being encouraged to get in touch with Crimestoppers either by calling their number 0800 555 111 or filing out an online form on its website.

Claim fraud on the rise: insurance firms hard-hit – Bizcommunity.com

Posted: at 9:22 pm

Despite being in the business of risk mitigation, insurance firms themselves are often subject to risk in the form of insurance crime.

Source: Supplied. Dr Jerry Chetty, manager of the Business Integrity Unit at Santam.

This is a notable increase from the previous year when fewer than 3,500 cases of fraudulent and dishonest claims to a value of R587.3m were uncovered. Statistics for insurance crime in the short-term insurance industry is not readily available.

The Insurance Crime Bureau estimated that the short-term insurance industry lost about R7bn in 2019 due to insurance crime namely 20% of the R35bn worth of claims paid out. As the risk landscape changes, insurers must keep up to date with developments in fraud risk-mitigation strategies if they are to reverse this process.

Through their research, South Africas largest short-term insurer, Santam, has pinpointed some of the areas in which insurers are facing challenges and how they can be combatted.

For example, the claimant may inflate a genuine claim and falsify certain details for financial gain. Claims processes, which have been implemented by insurers to speedily assist policyholders in claims settlement, are being exploited by criminal syndicates.

Some see submitting fraudulent and dishonest claims as a quick and uncomplicated way to help alleviate that pressure.

People filing dishonest or fraudulent claims often rationalise this fraudulent behaviour by tricking themselves into believing that filing fraudulent claims is a victimless crime as no-one gets hurt.

Attitude towards behaviour is related to the outcome and cost factor involved in continuing with a specific behaviour; subject norms are the views which peers or society have about the specific behaviour; and behaviour control refers to the ease or difficulty in continuing with the behaviour.

Theorical understanding is a useful component to include when developing an anti-fraud programme as it includes both transactional and behavioural aspects.

With that said, these crimes can be split into four broad categories, each with its unique characteristics:

One of the examples we uncovered at Santam was as follows. A policyholder claimed for items which were not stolen or which the policyholder did not own during a legitimate claim for a housebreaking incident. This was done so that the policyholder could receive a higher claims settlement amount.

Most correspondence is done by email and as soon as a field assessor is dispatched, the claim is often cancelled, and the claimant becomes unreachable.

Business-email compromise and ransomware attacks are prevalent to industries that are data dependent or that are regularly involved in processing payments.

An alert management system for the collection of both complainant and intelligence-driven information is a critical early-warning system in detecting insurance crime. Complainant-driven platforms include the various whistleblowing channels available for people to anonymously report suspicions of insurance crime.

There are various technology solutions which offer good early-detection capability in identifying patterns and behaviour. We have combined technology with sophisticated intelligence and analysis machinery that can help us detect emerging risks and neutralise them before they get out of hand.

Together, these solutions are able to track a change in behaviours from fraudsters which gives us the advantage of responding quickly. We have also learnt that low-value claims matter and should also be vigorously monitored. As we see with low-value claims where we send out field assessors, fraudsters follow the path of least resistance and when confronted with a robust defence are likely to abandon their plans.

Another way to discourage fraudulent claims is through the deterrence-letter theory. Research has found that the filing of fraudulent claims decreased when insurers advised policyholders about the negative impacts of insurance crime on society and the possible repercussions a person could face for filing inflated or false claims. Such initiatives are cost-effective methods for insurers to employ as part of their antif-raud programme.

Finally, by adequately training frontline staff, sharing information with fellow stakeholders in the industry, undertaking more research and conducting extensive consumer awareness, we can reverse the trajectory of these crimes.

Smash-and-Grab Hits Calif. Macy’s; NY Plans to Target Repeat Offenders – Sourcing Journal

Posted: at 9:22 pm

Police in California are investigating a Macys smash-and-grab robberySaturday morning after three suspects stole high-end watches before fleeing the scene.

The Walnut Creek Police Department (WCPD) outside San Francisco said three Black male adult suspects wearing hooded sweatshirts and masks entered the store located in the towns Broadway Plaza shopping center at approximately 10:48 a.m., when they began smashing jewelry display cases with hammers.

The suspects stole the valuables and fled the scene in a white four-door Honda sedan. The WCPD is still searching for the three men. No employees or shoppers were injured during the robbery.

WCPD PIO lieutenant Holley Connors said on Sunday that Macys was still inventorying the loss and estimated cost to repair the damages.

Macys did immediately responded to a request for comment.

The smash-and-grab occurred in the same mall where dozens of looters robbed a Nordstrom in late November last year. Between 50 and 80 looters entered the store just before 9 p.m. during last years incident when they grabbed merchandise and fled, police said. Bystander video showed thieves fleeing the scene and jumping into waiting cars with bags full of stolen merchandise just minutes after entering the store. The WCPD apprehended three suspects, including one carrying a firearm.

That Nordstrom had been a target of robberies earlier in 2021, forcing the store to team up with the WCPD to station a uniformed officer at the location.

Contra Costa County district attorney Diane Becton has instructed her own prosecutors to consider looters needs in theft cases.

As Becton and her team are seeking answers, Manhattan district attorney Alvin Bragg hopes his new plan alongside the Manhattan Small Business Alliance will slow down similar robberies and crimes throughout the New York City borough.

The plan specifically targets repeat offenders, as 18 percent of people arrested for shoplifting comprised nearly half of all shoplifting arrests in Manhattan between 2015 and 2021.

The first phase of the initiative focuses on top retail theft repeat offenders in Manhattan, all of whom are charged with at least one felony, and have either failed to appear at a scheduled court date or have multiple open pending cases.

We cannot accept a system where individuals who shoplift again and again cycle in and out of jail, just to shoplift again. Our society cant function that wayit doesnt help our shop owners, and it doesnt help those individuals, D.A. Bragg said in a statement. At the Manhattan D.A.s Office, we follow the data, and the data shows a small number of individuals are driving the retail theft crisis facing our borough.

Bragg called for targeted interventions, tailored to individuals needs and challenges, combined with accountability to ensure engagement and compliance with programming that can end the cycle. He said this includes potential incarceration for those who repeatedly engage in commercial theft.

Senior leadership from the Manhattan D.A.s office and the New York Police Department (NYPD) will hold monthly meetings to analyze data and case outcomes for individuals with high rates of recidivism. The D.A.s crimes strategies unit is coordinating with the NYPD to ensure communication at the precinct level, allowing commanding officers to send the office information in real time.

The office is expanding resources dedicated to investigating retail theft and fencing operations, when criminals resell stolen merchandiseand says it will continue to convene retail security professionals, as well as small retailers, community members and the NYPD to build pattern cases and ultimately prosecute those most culpable for financing and facilitating fencing operations.

Small Business Alliance co-chair Ken Giddon, who is also president of Rothmans, a mens apparel retailer with multiple stores in New York City, said he was truly appreciative of Bragg and his teams work on this issue.

The task force was very effective in bringing the problem of shoplifting and violence against retail workers into focus. Too many people in public service believe it is a victimless crime that is covered by insurance, but in reality, it is a dangerous and debilitating situation, that tears at the very fabric of NYC, Giddon said in a statement. The D.A. has taken some crucial first steps here, and we look forward to working together to continue to make improvements. Thank you D.A. Bragg for bringing together so many different groups to push forward.

D.A. Bragg and the alliance will continue to advocate for the passage of S.8836, a pending New York State senate bill sponsored by Sen. Brad Hoylman, which would create penalties for online marketplaces and third-party sellers that foster the sale of stolen goods.

Creating these new penalties will push companies where stolen goods often end up, like Amazon or eBay, to take further steps to safeguard their platforms and allow law enforcement to target the ringleaders of these schemes. It will also create disincentivize sellers to put stolen goods up for sale online.

Retail theft crimes have negative and costly impacts on business owners and consumers alike, Hoylman said. I commend D.A. Bragg for bringing people together to develop strategies to hold accountable those who participate in these crimes, including focusing on repeat offenders, dismantling fencing operations, and getting services for those in need. This should make a positive difference for all of us.

Bragg also advocates for the passage of Senate/Assembly bill S8391/A10096, sponsored by New York State Sen. Kevin Thomas and Assemblymember Jeffrey Dinowitz, both Democrats, which aims to prevent crime by creating transparency and verification requirements on certain high-volume third-party sellers in the online marketplace. These requirements, which include providing names, contact information and business tax identification numbers, are designed to help ensure that consumers are purchasing from legitimate companies and not entities created to trick online shoppers.

Back on the West Coast, Washington state attorney general Bob Ferguson revealed Thursday that his office is creating a statewide Organized Retail Crime Theft Task Force in response to the elevated theft rates.

The task force will focus on sophisticated, organized crime rings like the 13-member operation rounded up in Seattle in April, and will be the tenth such state task force in the U.S. The teams purpose is to improve coordination and collaboration among law enforcement agencies to address multi-jurisdictional crimes that can endanger retail employees and cause significant economic harm to the state.

Ferguson cited an analysis from the Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA), which estimates that Washington retailers lost $2.7 billion to organized retail crime in 2021. The office also cited federal crime statistics indicating that the value of items stolen from Washington retailers increased by 151 percent from 2019 to 2020.

The first task force meeting will be held on July 7. The attorney general has committed to convening quarterly meetings for at least one year.

Coordination is key to combatting this growing, and sometimes dangerous problem, Ferguson said. These organized crimes cross jurisdictions and cause significant economic harm. Im committed to working together with law enforcement and retail partners to put help combat this significant and growing problem.

The task force will bring together prosecutors and retailers from across the state with local, state and federal law enforcement representatives, including the FBI and U.S. federa attorneys Nick Brown and Vanessa Waldref. The task force will also include the Port of Seattle, small business representatives and workers representatives.

Human trafficking probe in Winnipeg nets three-year sentence | CTV News – CTV News Winnipeg

Posted: at 9:21 pm

A Winnipeg man has been sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to recruiting and directing two women to provide sexual services for hire.

The charge stemmed from a lengthy investigation by the Winnipeg Police Services counter-exploitation unit dubbed Project Bluff. Work that involved covert and undercover operations.

At a sentencing hearing for Ferosh Tailor, 34, late last month court heard he made contact with one of the women in June 2020 through a website called Only Fans where people can pay for images and videos from the owner of the account, and later recruited the second woman.

A rental property in Osborne Village was one of three apartments court heard was used by Tailor for what a Manitoba judge described during the sentencing on May 30, 2022, as a sophisticated, well thought-out operation.

An operation court heard involved recruiting and directing a 21-year-old woman and a 19-year-old woman to provide massages and sexual services to clients through appointments Tailor would schedule before Winnipeg police arrested and charged him with multiple offences and seized around $42,000 from a safe in his home.

It was an unfair value for the work he did compared to what they had to do, Staff Sgt. Maria Koniuck told reporters Friday.

Tailor pleaded guilty to one count of material benefit from sexual services. He was sentenced to three years in prison.

That three years is very significant because you have an individual here who does not have a criminal record, Koniuck said.

In an agreed statement of facts, the Crown told court Tailor first started interacting with the 21-year-old on her Only Fans account.

Court heard he told the woman he had an opportunity for her and she agreed to the work.

The Crown told court Tailor started arranging appointments between the woman and clients that included massages and sexual services, excluding intercourse at three rental properties.

She would leave him a cut of her earnings in the apartments, which totalled $3000.

Court heard a second woman, a 19-year-old, started working for Tailor and agreed to split her income with him and that both women were fearful of Tailor.

We say that in the case of these two exploited individuals Mr. Tailor preyed on the complainants for his own profit, the Crown told court during sentencing.

We say this conduct is reprehensible and must be denounced which is why we say the three-year custodial sentence is appropriate.

Martin Glazer, Tailors lawyer, told the court his client believed he was helping the women and himself make money but is now ashamed and remorseful.

This was an illegal enterprise, Glazer told the judge. He went too far and for that decision hes going to pay a heavy price today and that price is a penitentiary sentence with all the safety risks.

Court heard Winnipeg police were granted warrants in the case to enter the apartments and observed Tailor picking up his cut of the money.

Officers also used money with pre-recorded serial numbers which were later found in Tailors safe.

Police said they want people to know officers are committed to protecting people from exploitation and perpetrators will be held accountable.

Ive seen where people who arent even in the sex trade are being asked to provide services, Koniuck said. Its happening to youth that are just walking down the street. Its not a victimless crime.

Police ask anyone with information or who wishes to speak to an investigator about crimes related to procuring sexual services or human trafficking to contact the counter exploitation unit at 204-986-3464 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477.

There are no humans on Mars, a NASA spokesperson confirmed yesterday, likely to no avail.

The problem, of course, is that the people who needed to be told this wont believe itbecauseits coming from an official NASA spokesperson and those folks already expect official denials of their claims. Official denials are part of their conspiracy theory involving a secret Martian colony so, for them, hearing a NASA official deny the colonys existence is received asconfirmationof the conspiracy.

This conspiracy, by the way, involves the abduction of children who are then shipped to Mars where they will serve as sex slaves for depraved plutocrats until they (the children) are slaughtered and their blood and body parts can be harvested and consumed by the plutocrats.

Yes, its Satanic baby-killers on Mars.

Ben Collins reports on this new, extraterrestrial twist on the archetypal immoral panic,NASA Denies That Its Running a Child Slave Colony on Mars.Collins first heard about this conspiracy theory on Alex Jones Infowars radio show a program admired and recommended by President Donald Trump. And so, as a good reporter, he called that poor NASA spokesperson for their response.

There are no humans on Mars. There are active rovers on Mars. There was a rumor going around last week that there werent. There are, Guy Webster, a spokesperson for Mars exploration at NASA, told theDaily Beast. But there are no humans.

Being part of NASAs Mars exploration team is a great gig, but Webster may have the worst job on that team. He sounds like a man who gets a lot of phone calls like this one and has to respond regularly to whatever the latest nonsense somebodys crazy uncle is posting on Facebook. Oh for goodness sake, what is itnow? he must think, every time his phone rings.

We can appreciate his exasperation. It must be exhausting, having to field so many inquiries about outlandish and impossible theories about whats really going on up there on Mars. When Collins asked him about this one rumor being spread on talk radio and the Internet, Webster replied, Theres only one stupid rumor on the Internet? Now thats news.

Its appropriate to see the humor in this particularly given the extreme incoherence and implausibility of this dead-earnest nonsense. After all, the same people who claim to believe that NASA has been smuggling abducted children to a secret Martian colony for 20 years also claim that NASA faked the Moon landing. And they also believe Pizzagate which posits that these same Satanic baby-killers are operating child-abduction-sex-slave-blood-harvesting rings in secret tunnels beneath their neighborhood pizza parlors. Why go through all the risk and expense of building a secret colony on Mars if youve already got all the pedophilia-and-human-sacrifice you need just down the block?

But while this latest Martian twist is ridiculous and hilariously bonkers, theres nothing funny about the way the underlying mythology here is actually shaping life in America. Our politics and our religion are shaped by precisely the same laughable silliness that were hearing from Alex Jones and his purportedly CIA insider guest.

Most of the 80 percent of white evangelicals who support Donald Trump would join us in laughing at this Martian conspiracy theory. They know that theres no secret colony on Mars harvesting the bodies of children because thats what they think Planned Parenthood is already doing. They believe with as much sincerity as theyre able to trick themselves into faking that Planned Parenthood sells baby parts.

Yes, theyve surely seen how those edited sting videos have been thoroughly debunked but, again, official denials were already factored in as part of the conspiracy theory, so they can receive that debunking as a kind of perverse confirmation. Medical professionals, courts, women and The Media are allin on it.

They believe in Satanic baby-killers. And given the nature of this superlative evil, they believe opposition to Satanic baby-killers must be our top priority at all times, eclipsing every other concern. And everything must be reshaped to conform to this priority our politics, our religion, our piety, our charity, our education, our parenting all must be repurposed toward this one priority. Only then will we achieve the one thing that can, at last, bring an end to the secret reign of terror of these Satanic baby-killers: a return to Lochner Era jurisprudence.

WeWork: Or the Making and Breaking of a $47 Billion UnicornThe fantasy of kibbutz capitalism – WSWS

Written and directed by Jed Rothstein

The documentaryWeWork:Or the Making and Breaking of a $47 Billion Unicorn, available on Hulu, concerns the meteoric rise and breathtaking six-week collapse of a real-estate start-up. A unicorn is a privately held company valued at over $1 billion.

Written and directed by Jed Rothstein, the film treats the period from 2008in the wake of the stock market crashto 2019, and chronicles the operations of Adam Neumanns WeWork, in essence, anoffice rental firm. Billing itself as a revolutionary high-tech company, the enterprisewould sign long-term leases on office space, subdivide the latter into smaller areas and then rent those out on a short-term basis. Israeli-born Neumann professed a desire to create a more communal corporate world, which he envisioned as a kind of capitalist kibbutz.

The years following the 2008 global financial crisis were marked by speculative parasitism soaring to stratospheric heights. Neumanns grotesque, New Age company, which he founded withMiguel McKelvey in Soho, New York in 2010,arose within these conditions.Neumann eventually walked away with a $1.7 billion severance package after a failed Initial Public Offering [IPO] in 2019, at which time the firms actual financial state of affairs came to light.

In retrospect, theNew Republicmagazine suggested in a November 2020 article, Neumanns knack for amassing billions of dollars in venture capital with no viable business model was one of the greatest scams of the twenty-first century.

WeWork went from two locations in New York City and 450 tenants in 2010 to 800 locations in 111 cities across 29 countries, with 527,000 tenants, by the second quarter of 2019. The workforce nearly quadrupled from 4,000 employees at the end of 2017 to 15,000.

Rothsteins documentary interviews a phalanx of former employees, journalists and customers, drawing as well on extensive video footage of Neumann. His pretentious, pie-in-the-sky marketing concepts were crucial for rebranding his company as a pioneering tech company as opposed to a mundane, but risky real estate venture. What stands out is how effectively Neumann was able to manipulate people who thought they were following a prophet, not a garden variety huckster.

He exploited the fact that millennials, many of them economically distressed, werent just looking for a job or a career, they wanted a calling. His overblown sale pitches were bound up with a self-indulgent, do what you love ethos that attracted not only potential employees and customers but also wealthy investors, such as Jamie Dimon of JPMorgan Chase. Other investors included Goldman Sachs, Benchmark Capital, Saudi Arabias Public Investment Fund (PIF), Harvard Management Co. (the company that manages Harvards endowment funds) and Legend Holdings (the Chinese holding company and controlling shareholder of Lenovo Group), among others.

TheWeWorkdocumentary contains footage of the firms annual summer camp, an alcohol- and rave-filled event, that was mandatory for employees, who were then monitored with wrist trackers. The company segued to WeLive, in which members were invited to live indorm-type accommodation. Plans were afoot for schools (WeGrow), gyms (WeWork Wellness) and even a colony on Mars.

Neumann even trademarked the word We. WeWork paid him $5.9 million to license it. TheWall Street Journal reported that he took $700 million out of the company before the failed IPO.

On his way to the top of the dung heap, Neumann had flopped with various money-making schemes, such as retractable heels for womens shoes and infant clothing with knee pads.(My generation will not accept our babies crawling on the floor with their knees hurting!)

Rebekah Neumann, Adams wife, a certified Jivamukti yoga instructor and a cousin of actress and professional confusionist Gwyneth Paltrow, guided the company into the mystical realm, claiming the mission was to elevate the worlds consciousness.

According to Equilar, Inc., an executive compensation analysis firm, the 200 highest-paid CEOs at public companies had a median salary of $18.6 million in 2018. Neumanns consulting fee alone was about ten times that amount.

While lavishing riches on Neumann, the company required cash infusions from SoftBank, a Japan-based conglomerate and WeWorks largest investor.According to the filmmakers, its founderMasayoshi Son encouraged Neumanns outlandish behavior. But in 2019, when the cultish real estate outfit filed an IPO, all the pixie dust vanished.

What emerged was one bizarre account after another of the executive-gurus extravagant spending on homes and jets, as well as his abuse of employees. One believer in Neumanns pabulum tearfully tells the filmmakers that she required therapy to unwarp her mind. More to the point, the S-1 filing, the paperwork required to go public, revealed massive losses and unethical business practices.

WeWorks unicorn valuation fell from $47 billion to just $8 billion, as the hot air balloon deflated.

But despite the job massacre, the Neumanns were given their golden parachute and, according to the documentary, planned to open a private school, Students Of Life For Life, or SOLFL (pronounced soulful), but with soul-destroying tuition of $42,000 a year. In addition to the layoff of some 3,000 employees, the company had to remove over 2,000 phone booths in North American locations that were tainted by formaldehyde.

The blame for this wreckage, says director Jed Rothstein in an interview, lies with this incentive structure where youre just signing as many deals as possible and growing as fast as possible, and its like building a rocket ship as its flying.

Unfortunately, Rothsteins documentary never looks behind this incentive structure, or more generally, into the character of the recent epoch.

The persistent tendency toward the creation of speculative bubbles arises out of deep-rooted contradictions in the development of the world capitalist system, especially bound up with the historical decline in the global position of American capitalism, commentedWSWS International Editorial Board Chairman David North in January 2008.

Trillions have been pumped into the financial system by the worlds central banks since 2008. The stock markets have climbed and climbed, and ever-more arcane forms of speculation (and swindling) have emerged. What has this apparently unlimited supply of cash produced? The result has been the almost unimaginable concentration of wealth, an explosion of imperialist militarism and violence, the re-emergence of fascism, ferocious attacks on democratic rights and a relentless increase in the exploitation of the working classin short, the opposite of the kinder, kibbutz capitalism promoted by Neumann and company.

The Ultimate Guide To An Adventurous Antarctica Vacation – Maxim – Maxim

From glamping in space-age sky pods to arctic off-roading in the White Desert.

The idea of wilderness plays a crucial and curious role in the ongoing evolution of travel. Conquering the wild was once central to our pioneer narratives of progress. Nowadays exploring the frontier can take on a myriad of meanings for different travelers. Whether the notion conjures remote lands, or the thrilling prospect of tracking apex predators, here are ways to get your wild onfrom the South Pole to the South Sandwich Islands.

An entirely 21st Century upgrade in travel to the White Continent is finally here, ready to quite literally rock your world and properly blow your mind. White Deserts newest camp, Echo, debuts this December. The new camp is located inland of Antarcticas north coast, three miles from Wolf s Fang, a sister camp that opened in December 2021 on a glacier in Queen Maud Land.

A power player in the sustainable polar travel arena, White Desert is the only luxury hospitality company in the world to fly business jets to Antarctica. Their 9,800-foot runway is exclusively for private jets, either the companys Gulfstream G550, a privately-chartered A340 or those of camp guests, which have included the likes of Prince Harry, Bear Grylls, and Buzz Aldrin.

Echo is the next best thing to a stag party on Mars. Intimately scaled, its ideal for exclusive use by affluent families, C-suite executives, and bachelors gone rogue. On arrival, a welcome cocktail chilled with 10,000-year-old ice awaits in the central lounge.

Accommodating up to 12 explorers in serious style, Echos high-end execution of deliriously thrilling expeditions raises the bar on next-gen pop up possibilities. As with all White Deserts camps on the 7th Continent, Echo is designed to be completely dismantled, leaving no trace on the environment.

Inspired by the golden age of space exploration, the idyllic design of the Sky Pods is striking, to say the least, like superstructures from a parallel multiverse. Futuristic and nostalgic all at once, Echo is quite an aesthetic coup. Six heated pods were created using composite fiberglass with floor-to-ceiling windowslose yourself in the lunar-like landscape from the comfort of your bed. Waking up at Echo, encircled by otherworldly geological formations, feels like youve lifted off the planet without actually leaving Earth.

Each pod features original photography by Colonel Terry Virts, former International Space Station Commander, taken from the ISS. Virts was an early guest with White Desert, and the terrain spectacle clearly made a massive impression. Take it from one of the few astronauts who can legitimately boast this frame of comparative reference; says Virts of the Echo camp landscape, The mountains are the most beautiful I have seen across Earth, Venus and Mars.

Patrick Woodhead, White Desert founder and CEO, tips his hat to pop culture in his latest passion project. The inspiration behind the interiors of Echo Base comes from too many years of watching Star Wars as a kid, says Woodhead.

I loved the 1970s vision of what the future would hold. The real difficulty was trying to get the interior designers to fuse together the retro feel of the Millennium Falcon with the luxury of a boutique retreat! The polar explorercum-camp entrepreneur finds the greatest validation from those whove ventured into orbit, divulging, Weve hosted a couple of astronauts over the years, and hearing them speak about the beauty of the Antarctic landscape is quite something.

Fill your days with as much fat biking, skiing, and Ski-Dooing as you like. Or forge trails in a 44 arctic truck to ice-climbing and mountaineering sites. An expedition to the 28,000-strong Emperor Penguin colony is the peak bucket list moment for most guests. Be sure to avail yourself of the arctic-specific SPF100 on hand at camp or face the high-UV consequences, like the group of Saudi royals, who thought they were immune.

By nightfall, captains of industry sip snifters of Speyside Scotch served from a snow bar sculpted from Jurassic-era ice. A dining room serves up epicurean delights such as savory lamb shank, or velvety tagliatelle in a Parmigiano wheel, no small feat, considering youre carb-loading this close tothe South Pole. Beam us in a hologram of Wonderwall-era Jane Birkin, were hooked. This five-day fantasy can be yours from $780,000, for up to a dozen of your friends.

Nearly a century after the heroics of early Antarctic exploration, the elusive continent remains largely undiscovered. We cant think of a more thrilling frontier than the impassable Weddell Sea and imposing Larsen Ice Shelf. The big buzz on the high seas for the coming Antarctic cruising season? Ponant recently launched Le Commandant-Charcot, the worlds first luxury hybrid electric ice-class vessel, powered by LNG (currently the cleanest fuel on the market).

Le Commandant-Charcot is capable of sailing to parts of the Bellingshausen Sea that have been inaccessible until now. The volcanic Peter I Islandwhere fewer people have visited than have set foot on the moonis suddenly an option, to put this auspicious launch into rather wild perspective. Navigating the route first explored by Jean-Baptiste Charcot in 1909, National Geographic enthusiasts will surely be smitten by the oceanographic laboratory onboard. Far from a mere pleasure cruise, take part in what Ponant dubs participative science by helping to set up a station on an ice floe or taking water samples. Ponant polar itineraries also include the South Sandwich Islands and the Ross Sea.

Our continental frontier remains the Lamar Valleythe Serengeti of North Americain Yellowstone National Park. If wolves are your spirit animal (or just on your boos wish list), the Four Seasons Jackson Hole unveils a new encounter this summer designed to dive deeper into this connection. The resorts partnership with Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris allows for unrivaled access to view Greater Yellowstones apex predators in prime natural habitats. An expert naturalist guides you in safely tracking and photographing wolves, grizzlies and megafauna in a landscape right out of Jeremiah Johnson.

With Grand Teton and Yellowstone in their backyard, the Four Seasons Jackson Hole boasts a Swiss Army Knife of solutions when it comes to creative expeditions to Willow Flats, Pacific Creek, Hayden Valley within the parksall with an upscale spin. To disappear into the wild at dawn, revel in an emotional epiphany with wolves by dusk (or at least a certain awe), then feast on dry-aged Piedmontese ribeye slathered in black-truffle bone marrow butter is pretty priceless.

If you value lashings of personal attention and handcrafted, five-star meals, nirvana awaits at Westbank Grill, overlooking the resorts base camp. Many of this particular Four Seasons custom experiences are in some way geared towards physical and mental exploration, if not enlightenment. For those short on time, but big on rugged adventure with all the trappings of a posh holiday, this is as good as it gets.
