Fighting for Abortion Rights All Over Again – The American Prospect

Posted: June 24, 2022 at 9:41 pm

The Supreme Court decision is outrageous, but not surprising. The Court has taken away the ability of people to control their own bodies and lives and turned that power over to politicians.

It is outrageous because it is against the popular will, against morality, against precedent, against the expansion of freedom.

This is an undermining of the most basic freedom and most intimate decision of a persons life: when or whether or with whom to have a child.

It is against the popular will. Eighty percent of people in this country believe that no politician should come between a woman and her doctor in this most intimate decision. Seventy-five percent of people do not think Roe should be overturned.

One in five people who can have a child will have an abortion in their lifetime. One in five. This means it could be your friend, your sister, your mother (and the majority of people who have abortions already have one childand so know what it means to bring a child into this world). It could be you.

It is not surprising because the right-wing/MAGA faction of the Republican Party has been chipping away state by state, rule by rule, law for law for decades. Especially impacting those without financial and family support, women of color, poor and younger women are the ones who will be left with no good alternatives to a forced and unwanted pregnancy.

This ruling will give rise to mob-run enterprises when something that is so needed is made illegal. It will help turn us into the kind of authoritarian country where neighbor reports on neighbor with these bounty laws (as in Texas and Oklahoma) where people are paid money$10,000 or even $100,000to report on someone they hear is searching for an abortion.

It may again create the septic abortion wards in hospitals for those who have harmed themselves or were harmed seeking to end an unwanted pregnancy. Many states will not allow exceptions for rape or incestthough it is not for others to determine what those who are pregnant decide, for whatever reason they decide, about their own health.

I have been involved with this issue for many years. In 1965, a friend was pregnant and nearly suicidalnot ready to have a child. Her brother asked if I could help her find someone to provide an abortion. I hadnt thought about the issue before, but approached this as a good deedas in the Golden Rule: treat others as we would want to be treated. I did find a doctor for herDr. T.R.M. Howard.

I didnt know it at the time, but he had been a civil rights champion in Mississippi until his name appeared on a Klan death list. The procedure was successful. Then word must have spread, and more women called for help. This led me to set up an underground abortion service before Roe; I told people to ask for Jane.

Over time, I recruited others to this Service. After Dr. Howard was not in touch (likely because he had been arrested), I found another provider whose name was Mike. The women of the Jane Collective learned how to do the procedures themselves and provided 11,000 abortions that were safe and accessible before Roe. But they were not legal.

When we organize, we have changed this worldwon voting rights, expanded participation in the society, and elected a Senate and president who made Roe the law of the land.

The Service (as we called it) had a Frontwhere the women came initially and had support and counseling, could bring their partners/support/kids and be welcomed into a caring space (often with food and diversions). A driver took them to the Place (initially a borrowed apartment) where the procedures were performed. After the women recovered, they were brought back to the Front.

There is a recent HBO documentary about this, The Janes. It has about 15 of the women who were in Jane, plus the policeman who was part of the team of homicide detectives who arrested seven of these women, the second providerMikeand others. It is a fascinating history and a great movie. There is another film coming out in September with Sigourney Weaver that is a somewhat fictional version of the story: Call Jane.

Reproductive freedom has become a partisan political issue, and that is reflected in this Supreme Court decision. While there are people who may join this from personal belief, there are also the cynical self-serving politicians who made this a partisan issue in a deal between some churches and the right wing of the Republican Party. In spite of public opinion and with enough money and media echoing their message, they are dominating political decisions in many states and much of the U.S. Senate and the Supreme Court.

Now we are on a knifes edge in this countrynot only about reproductive freedom, but about freedom to vote, freedom to marry who we love, freedom itself. But we do have the majority of the country on our side. We do have morality on our side. And now we need to organize to have the power to make these decisions to reflect the popular will.

But just imagine what two more senators and holding the House could do. We could overturn the filibuster and codify Roeand have sensible gun laws, and expand voting access, and address climate, and more. And the same is true at every levelincluding in the states and local areas.

We need to use every tool at our disposal.

We need to tell our stories, educate, activate, agitate, elect, and organize.

We need the 4 Ms: Members, Message, Money, Movement.

Members: Will we recruit the people we need to actwill we register, recruit volunteers, volunteer ourselves, vote and engage others to vote? We need to sign up for shifts, make the calls, the texts, go door-to-door and build the operations for those candidates who support our freedom.

Message: Will we tell the story, share the message, speak to the public, engage in language that will motivate people about what this means for their own lives in personal terms? And then send out that message in social media, in personal and group conversation and communication.

Money: Will we raise and give the money that is needed to support these efforts? Will we counter the impact of the dark money with our contributions and the massive grassroots support that we can generate?

Movement: We need to show up. To protestbut the protest is part of a strategy to build long-term power, to build the organizations, dig deep into the state and locals, connect with people, engage them on their concerns. Really listen to people and connect them with others who have shared concerns.

We will need to continue the servicesthe access to medical abortions and support for providers above and underground. People can go to http://www.abortionfinder.org or http://www.ineedana.com for additional help. There are so many organizations in the fieldboth national and local, large and small. We will need legal defense funds. We will need to protest. We will need a movement. And most of all, we will need political power.

When we organize, we have changed this worldwon voting rights, expanded participation in the society, and elected a Senate and president who made Roe the law of the land. And we can do that again but for that we need to organize.

And if we organize, we can change the world.

How to Clean Strawberries – Best Ways to Wash Strawberries – The Pioneer Woman

Posted: at 9:41 pm

There's nothing like a bowl of sweet strawberries! The greatest thing about them is that they're such a versatile fruit: you can eat them whole, slice them up and have them over ice cream, turn them into jam, or even toss them right into a salad. And there are so many strawberry recipes worth trying! Keep things super simple and make some chocolate covered strawberries, or whip up some strawberry-goat cheese crostini and a strawberry margarita for cocktail hour. In need of a strawberry dessert on a hot summer day? Try this strawberry icebox cake. And don't forget about strawberries for breakfast! Make this decadent strawberry butter and slather it on toast, or bake a batch of strawberry muffins.

But whether you've picked up a fresh pint of strawberries at a farm stand, the grocery store, or even picked your own right from your backyardyou have to wash them before you dig in! Unwashed strawberries can contain dirt and residue from processing and packing, plus pesticide residue and other yucky stuff. Read on for tips on how to clean strawberries, so they're ready for you to enjoy them!

The golden rule of cleaning strawberries is to only clean the amount you are going to eat at that particular time. When you buy the berries, you should store them dry and unwashed in the fridge. Then, when you're ready to eat some pull them out and give them a wash. Here's how to do it: put the amount of strawberries you want to wash in a colander (try to keep them in a single layer, wash in batches if you need to) and run them under cold water for about 20 seconds, moving them around to make sure you get all sides rinsed off. Then, they're ready to eat!

You can wash strawberries with both, though neither are necessarywater works just fine! If you want to wash with salt though, you can dissolve 1 teaspoon in a couple of cups of warm water. Add some ice cubes to cool it down, then soak the strawberries in it for up to 5 minutes. Drain and thoroughly rinse the berries to avoid them taking on too much of a salty taste.

If you want to wash the strawberries with vinegar (this is a good choice if you're using non-organic strawberries because it will wash off pesticides more thoroughly) heres what to do: combine 2 cups water with 1/2 cup white vinegar or apple cider vinegar and submerge the strawberries for about 10 minutes (increase the vinegar and water for larger quantities of berries). Drain the berries and thoroughly rinse them to keep them from tasting pickled or acidic.

Soaking strawberries in salt water will help dislodge any hidden dirt or bugs. Though it is totally normal for there to be some residue still on the berries (and we eat them this way most of the time), but if you're particularly concerned about residue on your berries giving them a soak in salt water.

From Admission To Discipline And The Choices We Make In Between – Above the Law

Posted: at 9:41 pm

One of the biggest fears that 3Ls have, in addition to flunking the bar exam, is flunking the character and fitness assessment for admission to the bar. This requirement may well be a reason those in law school and who have already graduated are reluctant to seek mental health services for fear of being rejected for admission on those grounds. And if that is the case, for even one law student or law school graduate, it is one too many.

The Legal Profession Blog reports on two changes that the Supreme Court of Ohio is considering.

Presently included in the fitness evaluation is whether there is any evidence of mental or psychological disorder that in any way affects or, if untreated, could affect the applicants ability to practice law in a competent and professional manner. The proposed rule change would eliminate that from an extensive list of factors when considering character and fitness for admission. A good first step that hopefully other jurisdictions will follow. For way too long, getting help for whatever reasons at whatever point in time, mental health concerns have been seen as a sign of weakness, both pre-bar admission and post. Too many deaths by suicide, so many cases of depression and substance abuse, and other mental health concerns may be changing that view or, at least, raising long overdue awareness. Not a moment too soon.

Another change that the Ohio Supreme Court proposes is to add as prohibited criteria to consideration of fitness to practice gender, sexual orientation, and marital status. Existing prohibited criteria already include age, race, color, national origin, and religion. Good idea to expand the prohibitions since, since I didnt know that any of those listed have anything to do with the ability to practice law.

Maybe, just maybe, our profession needs to open our eyes to the possibility that good lawyers, those who make a positive difference in society, can come from all sorts of backgrounds and not just from the traditional go to college, go to law school, pass the bar, and start practicing wherever you can land a job. There are those who have been incarcerated, graduated law school, passed the bar, and are practicing.

Maureen Oyenlobi, who is serving a life sentence, starts at ABA-approved Mitchell Hamlines online law school this fall. Convicted under Minnesotas felony murder rule, her appeals have been repeatedly denied while the shooter was sentenced to only 40 years and is eligible for parole. Disparity in sentencing based on sex? Nope, the felony murder rule is apparently at play here. I would bet that Oyenlobi will have a better understanding of the Constitution than certain others.

Did anyone watch John Eastmans testimony, if you could call it that, before investigators of the House January 6 Committee? He invoked the Fifth Amendment scores of times and apparently asked Rudy Giuliani to see if the outgoing president would consider him for a pardon. Pardon me. The transformation of Eastman from an exuberant rah-rah lets go on January 6, 2021, to the schlubby-looking dude sitting next to his counsel during his testimony was a study in contrasts. Perhaps he realized when testifying that he now has a deck chair on the Titanic. Eastman has apparently been kicked to the curb by our former prez. Cheer up, you are not the first one to be so treated and undoubtedly not the last. Just ask other attorneys that Trump has treated similarly over time. Does the name Rudy Giuliani come to mind?

Didnt anyone ever tell Eastman that a lawyer should not get involved in the clients mishigas? You advocate for the clients position (if and only if its grounded in law or a reasonable extension thereof and always fret about the possibility of Rule 11 sanctions). Where has Eastman been for the past decade or so? Didnt he know or shouldnt he have surmised that the words the former prez lives by are whats in it for me?

I am always amused, if thats the right word (and I am not sure it is), that peeps who think they can trash the Constitution when it serves their purposes are the first in line to claim rights (such as the Fifth, and Im looking at you, Eastman) when needed. Its akin to the person who kills both parents and asks for mercy from the court because hes an orphan.

The State Bar of California is investigating Eastman. With any luck at all, he will be enshrined in the State Bar rogues gallery of bad boys, along with Tom Girardi and Michael Avenatti. And please dont tell me that its the water in SoCal that these guys drank. We dont have any.

Considering the emotional testimony of the disgusting and unwarranted harassment of the two Georgia election volunteer workers, there is no such thing as the Golden Rule in Trumpland, nor would I expect there to be, nor is there any shame there in using whatever tactics are available on the theory that the ends justify the means. As bad as the conduct of Girardi and Avenatti has been, I hope the State Bar disbars Eastman for his conduct in trying to overturn the Constitution to suit one mans rapacious needs. If not disbarred, then the oath we all have taken to support the Constitution will have been an empty one.

Jill Switzer has been an active member of the State Bar of California for over 40 years. She remembers practicing law in a kinder, gentler time. Shes had a diverse legal career, including stints as a deputy district attorney, a solo practice, and several senior in-house gigs. She now mediates full-time, which gives her the opportunity to see dinosaurs, millennials, and those in-between interact its not always civil. You can reach her by email at oldladylawyer@gmail.com.

‘Buckhead Shore’: Fans slam Parker and Pat for fighting with Adamo and asking him to leave – MEAWW

Posted: at 9:41 pm

There's a very fine line between loyalty and blind loyalty. When 'Buckhead Shore' star Adamo Giraldo felt that his co-star Pat Muresan was showing blind loyalty towards Parker Lipman and called him out for it, he was met with a lot of hostility from the duo. Parker, who was hosting the cast at his lakehouse got so angry that he demanded for Adamo leave the lakehouse.

While Parker and Pat weren't pleased with being questioned by Adamo, fans however sided with Adamo and lauded him for standing up for himself. It all began when Parker's girlfriend Savannah Gabriel began confronting him for two-timing her with his ex Katie Canham. While Savannah was busy going off on Parker for not taking any accountability for his actions, instead of letting him speak, his friends Pat and DJ stepped in for him and tried diffusing the situation by pointing out how their best friend wasn't at fault at all. Adamo got annoyed over the fact that Parker wasn't speaking up for himself and instead of letting his friends do his dirty work. So he called out Pat for being Parker's "body guard", leading to an explosive fight between them.

Parker stepped in and tried to calm both the men, but instead ended up siding with Pat and lost his cool at Adamo. Parker justified Pat's behavior by claiming that he was family and was just defending his family. The fight ended with Pat walking away as he didn't want to disrespect the host of their trip. After watching Parker blatantly picking Pat's side despite being a host, fans began slamming him while siding with Adamo.

A fan tweeted, "Siding with Adamo after the heated argument between him and Parker! #BuckheadShore." "Adamo is right. Parker messed up so why is DJ and Pat speaking for him? He's a grown man. #BuckheadShore," wrote a fan. Another fan added, "Come on Adamo, you know the golden rule. Men don't hold our friends accountable #BuckheadShore."

Some fans speculated that Pat was supporting Parker just because of his money. "The guys are sticking up for Parker because he has lots of money! #BuckheadShore," declared a fan. "I was just thinking, why do these guys cape for Parker so much? Then I was like oh yeah, he got money. Makes sense. #BuckheadShore," seconded a fan.

Science says Amber Heard has the most beautiful face – MyStateline.com

Posted: at 9:41 pm

(WTVO) According to scientific facial mapping software, Amber Heard has the most beautiful face in the world.

According to US Weekly, Dr. Julian De Silva, at the Centre for Advanced Facial Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery in London, used a program that calculates face shapes using the golden ratio of beauty, which represents aesthetically pleasing facial proportions.

The Greeks discovered that the ratio occurs everywhere in nature and for thousands of years it has been thought to hold the secret formula of the worlds most beautiful faces, De Silva said.

De Silva fed images of the worlds most notable faces into the program, and Heards eyes, eyebrows, nose, lips, chin, jaw and facial shape were measured and 12 key marker points were analyzed and found to be 91.85 percent of the Greek ratio of Phi, which is 1.618, he said.

The software calculated that Heard, Marilyn Monroe, Emily Ratajkowski, Helen Mirren and Scarlett Johansson had the most beautiful nose; Ratajkowski, Monroe, Kylie Jenner, Natalie Portman and Angelina Jolie has the most beautiful lips; and ScarJo, Rihanna, Monroe, Kate Moss, and Cara Delvingne had the most beautiful eyes.

Model Bella Hadid scored the highest overall, being crowned the most beautiful woman in the world, being 94.35% accurate to the Golden Rule. Beyonce (92.44%) came in 2nd, Heard (91.85%) in 3rd, and Ariana Grande (91.81%), in fourth.

Your Breath Could Be The Key To A Fitter You – Longevity LIVE – Longevity LIVE

Posted: at 9:41 pm

IN AND OUT, in and out breathing is a no-brainer, right? It just comes naturally without any conscious effort. But what if we told you that your breath could could be the key to a fitter new you? Because, in fact, you can train your breath just like you train your body, and it can send your results sky high. Boosted sports performance, a stronger heart and cardio system, reduced stress and anxiety.. The benefits of better breathing are endless for longevity.

It may seem obvious, but understanding the ins and outs (sorry) will help you reap rewards. Under normal circumstances, breathing takes place without thinking, thanks to the medulla oblongata the part of the brain that maintains automatic functions. However, you can initiate voluntary changes to your breathing pattern, using the brains cerebral cortex, which can override the auto system. This allows you to control how fast or how deeply you breathe, which can help to improve your performance in vigorous activities, such as sprints or heavy lifts.

Stress either from exercise or external pressures stimulates your sympathetic nervous system, which tightens your respiratory muscles. Your chest expansion becomes restricted and shallow, and you breathe more rapidly. This is an ineffective way to breathe, as only the upper parts of your chest are efficient at removing toxic carbon dioxide and absorbing oxygen.

Learning to use your breathing effectively can be well worth your while, particularly if youre spending loads of time in the gym or if youre under a lot of stress. Ready to give it a go? Follow these easy exercises, and youll soon be breathing your way to a better body and mind

Had a long day or tough training session? Lie on your back and let yourself relax so your body feels heavy, as if you could almost sink into the floor. Then close your eyes and breathe nasally, taking long, slow breaths, fully inflating the lungs. Maintain a slow, comfortable rhythm and focus on listening to your breathing.

Be aware that nasal breathing will warm the air as its inhaled, so try to push this warmth down into your centre and feel your body temp gently rising from the inside out.

With resistance training, the golden rule is to exhale on the effort. This will give extra dynamism to your movements, allowing you to perform at a higher level and get greater results. For example, during a squat, the hardest part of the movement is lifting up from the lowered position. So, inhale as you bend your knees, sit into the squat position, then actively blow out as you contract your thigh and bottom muscles to return to the standing position. This theory can be applied to any exercise just remember to exhale as you lift the weight (or your own body weight) against gravity.

Breathe for A CARDIO BOOST During cardio exercise, varying the timing of your breath can improve the performance of your lungs and allow your body to use oxygen more efficiently. If youre going for a run, start with a 2:2 ratio breathing in for two strides and out for two.

The aim is to build up to a 3:3 and then a 4:4 ratio. For swimming, count the number of breaths you take to complete one length of the pool, then challenge yourself to take fewer breaths on the next length. Cyclists should work on trying to increase the number of revolutions for each breath, particularly on uphill stretches.

To strengthen your respiratory muscles and boost your endurance, sit in a comfortable upright position with your mouth closed.

Breathe quickly in and out through your nose, at a rate of two to three breaths per second, for five minutes. To aid the process, picture a pump inflating a tyre. You should feel the effort at the base of your neck, in your chest and in your stomach muscles.

You can boost your nervous and digestive systems and even muster some extra courage with one easy exercise. With your mouth closed, inhale slowly through your nose. Close the glottis (your vocal cords and the space between them) by lifting the back of your tongue to the roof of your mouth, and exhale, again through your nose, but this time focus on the noise and vibration of the breath. Keep going for about two minutes. will improve your concentration.

Clearing your mind is as easy as inhaling and exhaling, thanks to a clever exercise you can do at your desk, in the gym, or any time you need to find your focus. First, choose an empowering word, such as succeed, overcome or achieve. Take a deep breath in and, on the exhale, silently say the word to yourself and make it last the whole length of the breath.

If other thoughts start to drift in and out of your head, let them creep in, but dont let them take over, then slowly return your focus to repeating your chosen word to yourself.

These professionals know a thing or two about breath control

Anna Netrebko This Russian operatic beauty has been hailed as Audrey Hepburn with a voice. Since debuting 10 years ago, she has won hordes of fans with her incredible soprano voice.

Herbert Nitsch The Austrian freedivers world record 214m freedive has landed him the title of deepest man on Earth. But leave it to the experts, as hes still recovering from a near-fatal diving accident in 2012.

In 2011, Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner the Austrian alpinist became the first woman to take on all 14 of the worlds 8,000m peaks without the assistance of extra oxygen or high-altitude porters.

DID YOU KNOW? We automatically change sides in our sleep about every half an hour, and this is mostly due to the balancing of the breath through each of our nostrils.

Keeping Your Fuzzy Friends Happy in Hot Weather – The Corvallis Advocate

Posted: at 9:41 pm

While it may not feel like it recently, summer is rolling in, and that means its going to get hot.

With that in mind, its important to know how to properly take care of your pets, know the signs of heat stroke, recognize when its too hot for your pets to be outside or in a car, and be mindful of their needs.

The golden rule of pet parenthood and for that matter, all parenthood is that if youre hungry, tired, too hot, or too cold, they probably are as well. But with pets, its also vital to remember that they cant communicate with us; sometimes we have to know whats best for them, even if they dont.

According to Heartland Humane, one of the most important things to remember is that a cracked window in your car on a hot day means very little to your pet. Within thirty minutes with or without an open window, the internal temperature of your car can rise as much as 30+ F.

Anything above 90 F is dangerous for your pets, and anything beyond 100 F is an immediate cause for concern.

But sometimes we cant control the heat, and it can get beyond any reasonable control. Thats why we need to know what heat stroke looks like, what to do about it, and when to avoid sunlight with your furry friend.

The symptoms of heat stroke include:

If its above 90 F, avoid walking in direct sunlight with your pets when possible, walk under shade whenever its available, and feel asphalt and concrete before allowing your pets to walk on it after all, would you want to walk on that hot, hard surface in bare feet?

Heated concrete and asphalt can severely burn your pets feet. The best way to test this is to place sensitive skin, such as that on your wrist, on the pavement if you get burnt, they will, too.

Always bring water and a small bowl on walks, and if you recognize the signs of heat stroke in your dog, give them water, get them to shade, and call your vet heatstroke can happen in as little as fifteen minutes.

If you see an animal in a dangerously hot vehicle, do your utmost to find the owner. If unsuccessful, call 911 or a non-emergency animal control number. For Corvallis, call 541-766-6924; for Benton County, call 541-766-6858.

After contacting the authorities and being instructed to do so, Oregon is one of several states that allows citizens and law enforcement to break a car window to remove [a] child or domestic animal in imminent danger of suffering harm.

Are You a Nave Realist? – Nautilus | Science Connected – Nautilus

Posted: at 9:41 pm

When Lee Ross, a professor of psychology at Stanford, explained to his students what his term fundamental attribution error meant, he loved to quote George Carlin. Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac? The late comedian perfectly captured our tendency to attribute the worlds problems to other people and not ourselves. Im the only good driver on the road. Everybody else should drive like me.

Ross and his colleagues demonstrated that the fundamental attribution error was fed by the illusion of personal objectivity. In a 2016 Ted Talk, Ross joked that people believe that their take on the world is the objective one, and what has to be understood or explained is, What is it about those other people that seem to get it wrong? Ross came to call this nave realism, the tendency for people to think they see the world objectively, as it is, free from personal bias.1 Ross established three characteristics of the nave realist.

First, the nave realist believes that their perceptions are realistic and objective. Accordingly, other people (at least, reasonable other people) should share their beliefs, preferences, and convictions. Second, the nave realist expects that any reasonable, open-minded person will be persuaded to agree with the nave realist if there is disagreement between parties. If there is disagreement, and if the disagreeing party is a reasonable person, presenting the real facts should restore harmony. Third, anyone who disagrees with the nave realist after the presentation of real facts is unreasonable, biased, or irrational.

Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot?

Ross and his colleagues spent decades characterizing instances where the illusion of objectivity shaped how people think. In one of their studies, participants completed a questionnaire asking about their views on various hot button political issues such as abortion and capital punishment. The researchers collected and randomly redistributed the questionnaires among the participants. After reading a peers questionnaire, participants indicated the level of similarity between their views and the peers views. They also indicated the extent to which rational considerations (such as attention to facts) and sources of bias (such as wishful thinking, unreliable information sources, and peer-group pressures) influenced their peers views and their own views.

Ross found that people thought their own views were shaped by rational considerations more than biased thinking. They also found that participants evaluation of peers relied entirely on the perception of similarity between their views. When students read questionnaires of like-minded peers, they saw their peers as reason-driven, rather than bias-driven. Conversely, when they read questionnaires of peers whose views differed from their own, they attributed their views to sources of error rather than rational consideration.2,3

Weve been thinking a lot about Ross lately. For one of us (Erika), Ross was a favorite professor, and his death last year was a personal blow. What stood out for most people when they met Ross was his brilliance and readiness for humor. He was smart, attentive, and listened to his students. He cared deeply about growing the next generation of psychologists.

We also cant help thinking about Ross because of how accurately his theory of nave realism applies to our lives and culture today. America has fractured into separate camps because people are convinced their views are objective while those who disagree with them are deluded. The early days of the COVID-19 pandemic were characterized by something resembling a shared reality, but the country quickly devolved into factions over the effectiveness of mask-wearing and social-distancing. Despite evidence to the contrary, nearly one-third of Americans still believe the 2020 presidential election was stolen.

As Ross showed, the best inoculation against nave realismthe illusion of personal objectivityis a healthy dose of fact, aggregated from non-biased sources with no skin in the game. But against the backdrop of a highly polarized political landscape, and a media environment flush with disinformation, it is exceedingly difficult to even know where to begin in de-biasing oneself.

Recent studies from the field of social psychology offer some breadcrumbs. For example, it turns out that simply raising awareness of cognitive biases helps people identify instances of bias in their own judgments and correct their thinking accordingly. In 2014, psychologists Eran Halperin and Meytal Nasie led a series of studies examining whether merely making people aware of nave realism and its consequences could lay a foundation for compromise among Israelis and Palestinians. Participants were assigned to a control condition, or to an experimental condition in which they read a passage describing nave realism and its consequences, which included the following excerpt:

Nave Realism is the human tendency to form ones own worldview regarding various subjects, perceived by an individual as the only truth. Accordingly the individual believes that other peoples reluctance to share his or her views arises from ignorance, irrationality, an inability to draw reasonable conclusions from objective evidence, ideological biases, or self-interest. The psychological bias of nave realism causes people to see the world in a unilateral and simplistic manner. As a result of this bias, people tend to ignore or reject any information that does not fit their pre- existing worldview, which is perceived by them as the only truth. Consequently, they fail to see things from several points of view and may miss opportunities for change and progress.

Participants in the experimental conditionin particular, those who held more hawkish political ideologiesreported greater openness to learning about the point of view of the rival group following this short intervention. Remarkably, this was true of both Israelis and Palestinians, offering a simple and intuitive strategy to set the stage for dialogue between parties in conflict.4

In a 2022 paper, Halperin, psychologist Luca Lpez Rodrguez, and their colleagues built off this finding. They wondered whether a similar intervention might help Europeans become more accepting of immigrants cultural practices. In a series of experiments, European participants were randomly assigned to a control group or to an experimental group in which they read a passage similar to that used six years earlier by Nasie and colleagues. Then participants were given a battery of questions assessing their attitudes toward Moroccan immigrants; for instance, I feel irritated when Moroccans speak their language around me, and I do not understand why Moroccans keep their ethnic cultural traditions instead of trying to fit into the mainstream culture.

We miscalculate the extent to which our opponents viewpoints differ from our own.

Rodrguez and Halperin foundonce againthat learning about nave realism could be enough to buffer people from some of its most harmful effects. Participants who read about nave realism reported greater acceptance of immigrants cultural differences as compared to participants in the control condition.5 And while it remains unclear exactly why this intervention works, Rodrguez and Halperin speculated that it has to do with the desire to maintain a positive self-view. Realizing that our perception does not exactly correspond to reality could make it difficult to maintain an enhanced view of oneself, they wrote. This reduction in self-enhancement, in turn, may lead to questioning our beliefs, including those about the superiority of the ingroup, which would pave the way to accept others culture.

While learning about nave realism might help us overcome some of our political animosity, it is nave to expect that alone is sufficient to repair the fractures in our democracy. A problem of this magnitude requires more than just a shift in individuals willingness to entertain others perspectives. But it is a place to start.

Whats more, theres reason to think that now might be a particularly important moment to venture past our own perspectives. Polls show that Americans have more in common than not. Research from YouGov and More in Common suggest that Americans miscalculate the extent to which their political opponents viewpoints differ from their own. Democrats, for example, underestimate the extent to which Republicans think that properly controlled immigration can be good for America. Republicans, for their part, overestimate the extent to which Democrats think police are bad people.

Rosss decades of scholarship show that people reliably misunderstand others, especially those most different from themselves. Remaining vigilant to the threats of nave realism, epistemic humility, open-mindedness, and patience might be the only remedy to what Ross and his colleagues called the illusion of asymmetric insight, the misperception that we know others better than they know us. And this, according to Ross and colleagues, leads us to talk when we would do well to listen.6

I would unite with anybody to do right; and with nobody to do wrong.

Ross spent years in the field bringing the lessons of social psychology to bear on some of the worlds most perilous conflicts. In work with Unionists and Nationalists in Northern Ireland, Ross and his colleagues developed an exercise that proved especially fruitful. Individuals from each side of the conflict were tasked with describing the other sides position back to them. And they were required to keep at it until the other side agreed that they represented it correctly. This procedure initially proves difficult for all concerned and inevitably produces false starts, Ross wrote in 2018.7 Yet when the two sides finally are satisfied with the efforts of their counterpart, they feel greater empathy for each other, avoid the caricaturing of each others views, and are on the road to a more thoughtful and less defensive exploration of future possibilities.

In one of his final papers, Ross reflected on the work of abolitionist Frederick Douglass, who, when asked about his willingness to discuss abolition with slaveholders, offered the following insight: I would unite with anybody to do right; and with nobody to do wrong.8 In the wake of ended friendships, fractured families, and with our democracy on the brink, Americans have a unique opportunity to ask themselves with whom they could partner to do good.

Most Americans also agree on one key issue: that democracy is imperiled, and America is at risk of failing.9 While Democrats and Republicans diverge on the exact nature of the threat and how it should be addressed, this rare instance of agreement presents an opportunity for cross-partisan collaboration. For Americans of diverse ideologies and beliefs to find their way to the negotiation table, they must recognize and examine their illusions of personal objectivity, armed with what social psychologists Jay Van Bavel and Dominic Packer referred to as Ross Golden Rule: Proceed from the nave but charitable assumption that when people respond in ways that are surprising or offensive, it is generally their perceptions, assumptions, and construals, rather than their basic values, that differ from our own.10

Qatar 2022: Thibaut Courtois’ Belgium and 9 other National Teams defying a lengthy World Cup tradition – msnNOW

Posted: at 9:41 pm

Since the first chapter of its updateable book was written, which consists of 21 stories so far, the FIFA World Cup has been respectful of a pact, of a tradition that has been in force for 92 years. However, in the run-up to Qatar 2022, 10 rebellious national teams are aiming to defy the golden rule of the nationality of the World Cup champion manager.

The 22nd edition of the FIFA World Cup has a trend that has been in place since its conception: it is the World Cup of firsts. Never before in the history of this tournament has the Middle East served as the host region. It will also be the first time it will be played at the end of the year rather than in May, June and July.

Another new feature of Qatar 2022 is the inclusion of women referees, something that has not happened in the 92-year history of the FIFA World Cup. Emboldened by this trend of innovation, ten national teams are seeking to break with an almost century-old tradition of this tournament: that of the nationality of the World Cup champion manager.

So simple and so lapidary that it banishes any possibility of coincidence: if a National Team wants to win the FIFA World Cup it has to compete in it under a manager of the same nationality. This is how things have gone in 21 editions so far.

It is worth noting that there have not been 21 champion coaches, but 20, as the first two-time champion in the history of this tournament, Italy, was coached by the same manager in both editions: Vittorio Pozzo in 1934 and 1938. After that, only 8 teams have shared the glory in 92 years of FIFA World Cup existence.

Thus, the golden group of the FIFA World Cup is reduced to coaches from Brazil, Italy, Germany, Uruguay, Argentina, France, England, Spain and France, the only countries that have been crowned champions of this tournament. Who are the bold ones who will try to put an end to this trend in Qatar 2022?

Although it may sound illusory, given the obvious differences in level and possibilities among the 32 National Teams that will compete in Qatar 2022, there are two undeniable truths: first, that everyone who participates in a tournament has the aspiration to win it, and second, that the only way not to have even a remote possibility of achieving it is by not participating in it. Under the above premise, the squads that will compete in the upcoming FIFA World Cup have a chance, albeit a slim one, of winning the tournament.

Of the 32 National Teams that have qualified for Qatar 2022, 22 comply with the nationality pact of the World Cup winning coach. Get to know the 10 teams that defy tradition and seek to win the tournament without being coached by a coach from the same nation.

El Tri is to some extent understandable. For the last 7 World Cups it has been eliminated in the Round of 16; five of those occasions have been with a Mexican at the helm. Thus, for the second consecutive World Cup (Juan Carlos Osorio, Colombian, Russia 2018) it has a foreign manager. Can Tata Martino not only break the curse but take Mexico to heights never before achieved?

Since July 2017, Felix Sanchez has coached the hosts of the upcoming FIFA World Cup and led them to achieve what they have never before in their history, to be Asian Cup champions in 2019. He has also led them to reach the Semifinals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2021. Will Qatar break the 24-year drought without a host being crowned champion of this tournament (France 1998)?

The Korean national team will try to surpass its fourth place finish at the 2002 World Cup. At that time, they were coached by Dutchman Guus Hiddink. Now, their hopes are pinned on Portuguese coach Bento to emulate what he did with Sporting Lisbon, a club he led to win several tournaments.

From the outset, whatever happens in Qatar 2022, John Herdman's work is historic, as he managed to bring Canada back to this tournament after 36 years of absence and after establishing himself as the best team in CONCACAF ahead of Mexico and the United States. In order to make history, they have to beat Belgium, Croatia and Morocco.

Saudi Arabia has usually sailed against the tide: more foreign coaches than nationals have led the country, and this seems to be more of a tradition than a trend. They continue to rely on an outsider, in this case Herve Renard, to take them beyond their best performance at the FIFA World Cup, when they reached the Round of 16 in 1994 with Argentine Jorge Solari as manager.

After being left out of Russia 2018, Ecuador bet on Argentine Gustavo Alfaro for Qatar 2022 and at least in the qualifiers he did not fail. In the tough Conmebol, they got the last direct ticket and now they will have to deal with Qatar, Senegal and Holland to think about advancing to the Round of 16 and thus equal their best participation, in Germany 2006.

The Croatian coach has the tough mission of at least leading Iran to achieve what they have never been able to do, qualify from the group stage of a FIFA World Cup. Qatar 2022 will be the third consecutive World Cup they have qualified for: will they make it?

A wise coach who already has the experience of having coached in two FIFA World Cups, in Germany 2006 and Brazil 2014, with Ecuador and Honduras, respectively. Costa Rica is excited about this, since its best performance, precisely in the 2014 edition, was with a Colombian at the helm, Jorge Luis Pinto.

Another success story, at least in terms of the expectations of teams that usually don't have it in the FIFA World Cup. The Bosnian was responsible for leading Algeria to their best World Cup performance at Brazil 2014, when they reached the Round of 16. After hiring him in 2019, Morocco had in mind that Halidhodzic would make them repeat, at the very least, their historic participation in Mexico 1986 when they advanced from the group stage.

The Spanish coach is clear about it. After taking third place at Russia 2018, there is no other option but to win the title at Qatar 2022. He has in his hands the most powerful Belgian generation in history, which has already left behind its youth phase to be in full maturity, which makes them the candidate with the most chances to break the tradition 92-year-old traditon of World Cup Champions managed only by countrymen manager.
