Christie invests in robotics and automation to increase MicroTiles LED manufacturing capacity – InAVate

Posted: at 9:57 pm

Christie has upgraded its production facility in its Center for Engineering Excellence to keep pace with increased demand for MicroTiles LED.

The new space includes an automation line with robotic handling, which has increased manufacturing capabilities by almost threefold.

The new area includes advanced robotics and assembly lines, capable of manufacturing Christies MicroTiles LED. In production and manufacturing, there is a tendency to outsource automation, says Shawn Mills, director of display engineering, Christie. By designing and building our new automation line using our in-house engineering experts, we've not only increased our manufacturing capabilities, but we've also ensured we are ready for the next stage of growth. As a result, the new space incorporates best-in-class practices, including vertical integration, which ensures we build the highest quality product for our customers.

Additionally, two new pick and place robots have been installed to perform repetitive, low-level tasks, including moving tiles from conveyors quickly and efficiently. This allows Christies manufacturing staff to focus on more advanced tasks.

Mills adds; We can now invest even more in what's called design for manufacturing (DFM), a process used in higher volume industries, like automotive. On the team we have people that build and design the product and then naturally shift to designing the automation as an extension of this process. This gives the company a huge advantage because we can control much more of the value-chain, and we can be innovative not only in the design of the product, but also the process of creating that product. Its as important how we make our products as what were making.

German robotics and automation sector experiencing ‘booming demand’ – Robotics and Automation News

Posted: at 9:57 pm

The robotics and automation industry in Germany is benefiting from a boom in demand, according to industry association VDMA.

In the first four months of 2022, order intake increased by 38 percent year-on-year. The dynamic market development had already been noticeable with the results for 2021, in which industry turnover rose by 13 percent more than expected.

Frank Konrad, chairman of the VDMA Robotics + Automation Association, says: The robotics and automation industry is booming.

However, suppliers will not be able to process the orders as quickly as usual. The challenge now is to manage bottlenecks in the supply chains.

With a predicted growth of 6 percent, the industry forecast for robotics and automation is also positive for 2022 but remains below previous expectations, reflecting the severely disrupted supply chains. In particular, a shortage of electrical and electronic components is extending delivery times.

The three sub-sectors developed differently in 2021. Machine vision gained 16 percent: industry sales reached 3.1 billion. Robotics sales rose by 13 percent to 3.5 billion.

Integrated assembly solutions recorded an 11 percent increase in sales to 7.1 billion. Overall, sales in robotics and automation rose by 13 percent to 13.6 billion more than originally expected.

VDMA Robotics + Automation forecasts a 7 percent increase in sales for integrated assembly solutions to 7.6 billion in 2022. In robotics, growth of 5 percent to 3.6 billion is expected. Machine vision is also set to grow by 5 percent, corresponding to sales of 3.2 billion.

Frank Konrad says: The overall robotics and automation forecast is plus 6 percent with an expected industry turnover of 14.4 billion. Robotics and automation in 2022 is thus almost headed for the strong pre-crisis level of 14.7 billion of 2019.

The VDMA R+A member says its network, consisting of 50,000 people in 350 companies, has important tasks to solve that are crucial for the future.

Experts believe that the increased use of robotics and automation is indispensable for achieving climate and environmental protection goals and for sustainable business.

In a recent trend survey conducted by automatica (Messe Mnchen), robots ensure quality standards for products in sustainable high-tech manufacturing, according to 88 percent of industry decision-makers.

Industry solutions are also helping the circular economy and renewable energies to achieve their breakthrough. Green tech products, such as photovoltaic modules, can be manufactured cost-effectively in Europe in large quantities using automation technology.

The demand for fuel cells or particularly powerful batteries for electric cars is opening up new market opportunities.

A good 80 percent of the experts who make decisions about robotics and automation in German industrial companies also believe that technological innovation will have a positive impact on jobs.

Human-robot collaboration and the use of assistance systems will create higher-quality employment and offer new opportunities for continuous education and training.

A new generation of automation technology that can be used entirely without programming and is intuitive to apply is likely to lead the way here. 52 percent of decision-makers are firmly convinced that better-qualified employees will get better-paid jobs in the future.

Seamlessly interconnected machines, state-of-the-art AGVs (automated guided vehicles) and AMR (autonomous mobile robots) are revolutionizing factories. In combination with innovative software solutions, they close the last gaps and form truly integrated systems in the Smart Factory.

Robotics and automation companies are facing a labor and skills shortage that is accelerating as the baby boomer generation retires from the job market. Given the important tasks ahead, this is increasingly becoming a risk factor.

Konrad says: The labor shortage cannot be solved by robotics and automation alone. Companies are doing their best to address the shortage of young talent.

However, we need a stronger commitment from policymakers: Particularly in Germany, the shortage of personnel threatens to become the next major bottleneck factor, following the current disruptions in supply chains.

Enabling the Industrial Workforce for a Mobile Future – Automation World

Posted: at 9:57 pm

Because the digital transformation of industry is so clearly focused on data and technology, it can be easy to lose sight of the human aspect of this change. But enabling humansfrom frontline plant floor operators to corporate executivesto do their jobs better and make their businesses more efficient and profitable is, ultimately, why the digital transformation is taking place.

Thats why Dow Inc. partnered with Siemens and MxD (the Chicago-based center built in partnership with Department of Defense to advance U.S. manufacturing) to create a testbed for the optimization of tools for a more mobile industrial workforce. The testbed centers around a separation columncommonly used in the processing industries for multi-stage processes such as distillation, stripping, absorption, and extractionoutfitted with an array of Siemens technologies.

At the 2022 ARC Forum, representatives from Siemens, Dow, and MxD showcased this new testbed, which is open to all manufacturers looking to learn more about it and contribute to its ongoing development. (You can learn more about working with this system at http://www.mxdusa.org).

Sena Cooper, senior director of projects at MxD.Sena Cooper, senior director of projects at MxD, said, This project puts people at the center of digitalization journeywhich is what we have to do to make sure digitalization is successful. The testbed was built so that digital twins can be applied to it to create use cases for mobile worker technology in the field. Its about gaining knowledge as we build out the testbed and incorporate other modular digital solutions.

Doug Ortiz, Siemens DCS product management and marketing manager.Doug Ortiz, Siemens DCS (distributed control system) product management and marketing manager, noted that Siemens has been working with digital twins for more than a decade. This project is focused on capturing the knowledge of experienced workers and embedding that knowledge into technologies that can be used to train and advise new workers, as well as experienced workers moving to new positions, he said.

The changes weve seen in the workforce recently are important to recognize when youre focused on creating a system that enables a new worker to learn a system with the aid of technologies like augmented reality (AR), said Ortiz. Companies dont have time for new workers to come onboard and make mistakes, so the tools have to be there and accessible from anywhere to provide access to [components like] SCADA, HMIs, and controllers. Plus, younger engineers like having this access to data and dont understand why manufacturing technologies dont just work together.

Explaining Dows work with Siemens and MxD on this project, Katelyn Kelsey, mobile technology engineer at Dow Digital Operations Center, said, Digitalization is not new to Dow. We are aggregating cross-discipline teams to create digital centers that can be used to discover new technologies for a more sustainable plant architecture and understand what frontline worker support will look like in the future. We want to develop technologies for mobile fieldworkers so they can have access to all the information they need at all times to do their jobs.

She added that this shift in focus toward the human component of operations is important because the way we are learning is fundamentally changing. Were moving from reading manuals to watching YouTube videos and pulling up information on AR glasses. We have to have tools that match the way we learn and do work.

Laura Coates, vice president of process automation at Siemens Industry, said, This is a great example of partnering with one of our customers, Dow, and with MxD to bring real-world use cases provided by Dow into a place where customers can come in and see exactly how digitalization can work for them. We can provide a huge spectrum portfolio of technologiesfrom the instrumentation in the field to the networking that will connect it to the cloud, to the control system that can run their whole process operation.

The Siemens SIMATIC PCS neo controlling the separation column in the testbed is the world's first completely web-based process control system, said Ortiz. That means you can use any device that supports a web browser to access either the engineering or the operations environment of the control system. And it has a lot of built-in functionalities to help an operator do their tasks. For example, the alarm system will help the operator understand what events are taking place in the plant so they can address the highest priority events first.

Ortiz added that hes been involved in many commissioning projects where the plant manager wants to know what devices in a system are currently interlocked or in bypass mode. With SIMATIC PCS neo, I can find all those with just two clicksit connects to anything using open standards that are available in industry today.

Katelyn Kelsey, mobile technology engineer at Dow Digital Operations Center.Addressing Dows focus on the future mobile workforce with this project, Ortiz said, [With PCS neo] you have easy access to the control system regardless of whether you're in the central control room, out in the plant using a mobile tablet, or in an engineering hub halfway around the world. But the concept of mobile working extends beyond the ability to access the control system anywhere with PCS neos web-based system architecture. SIMATIC PCS neo is tightly integrated with Siemens simulation platform called SIMIT, which can be used to develop a digital twin of the process. The digital twin can be used by the operator to practice different operating procedures or learn how to respond in emergency scenarios so that they know how to react to those different situations before they're facing it for the first time in a real plant.

In addition to the PCS neo hardware and software and SIMIT simulation software used in the separation column testbed at MxD, other Siemens technology used include:

Kelsey noted that, while ITs involvement in this project has been critical to understanding the long-term support needs of a system like this, we also have users at the table to help us understand whats realistic about what were creating. For example, how many clicks does it take for users to get to the information they need? We also realize the need for this system to be adaptable, as the technology were using today will likely change in the next two years, she said.

Dows ultimate vision for this testbed is for it to serve as a guidepost for the development of mobile worker technology so that operators will soon be able to walk into a facility and have access to the tools they need just by picking up a tablet and accessing the information via pervasive wireless in the plant, without needing to know about IT and networking, said Kelsey.

Send automated messages with this Azure Logic Apps tutorial – TechTarget

Posted: at 9:57 pm

While PowerShell can handle a seemingly unlimited number of administrative tasks, messaging isn't one of its strong suits.

It takes work to get the right modules configured and authenticated to set up notifications in PowerShell. If you want to get messages from scripts that run in multiple locations in your organization, then the setup process is even more complicated. For example, you might have scheduled scripts that run on the domain controllers and want the script to report any success or failure. Or, more simply, you may want an easier way to deploy scripts with a smaller footprint. One option that can help with these specialized automation jobs is to use Azure Logic Apps to accept an HTTP POST and send an email or message in Microsoft Teams.

First, log into the Azure portal, click the Create a Resource button, search for Logic App and click on the Create button.

In the Create Logic App pane, select your resource group or create a new one if needed, set your type appropriately -- use Consumption unless you need Standard -- and give it a name:

Add any tags and create it. Select Go to Resource.

The first page that opens when you create an Azure Logic App contains some common triggers. For this Azure Logic Apps tutorial, we will use the When a HTTP request is received request trigger for the configuration of both Microsoft Teams and email.

The power of Azure Logic Apps is its ease of use. To demonstrate, let's create an automated workflow with two steps. First, it will accept several parameters via the When a HTTP request is received action and then it will send an email. This tutorial will use the Office 365 email connector, but there are several other email connectors with a send-email action, such as the Gmail connector for Google's email service. Microsoft provides a full list of its Logic Apps connectors here.

For a more flexible workflow, this Azure Logic App should accept values for several email header fields, such as to, CC, BCC, subject and message. To tell the Azure Logic App how to pass the data, we format that object in JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) and input it as a sample payload.

The Azure Logic App uses the values you supply to determine what type the property is.

Click on Use sample payload to generate schema and paste the JSON payload.

Click Done and you should see that the JSON schema updates to a format that is compatible with the Azure Logic App.

Add the email action by clicking on New Step and search for your email provider. For the purposes of this tutorial, search for Office 365 Outlook and select the Send an email (V2) action. If you haven't set up authentication for this action, a dialog box will prompt you to sign into an account. If you don't want to use your email account, then either sign in with a service account, or use the From parameter or select the Send an email from a shared mailbox (V2) and use a shared mailbox.

After authentication setup, the action will appear on the workflow.

You might notice the workflow doesn't have all the email header fields. Add those by clicking on the Add new parameter drop-down and check the parameters to add.

To use our defined parameters, click on one of the boxes, such as To, and a pop-up will suggest values that are hidden until you click the See more to reveal the custom parameters.

For each parameter, select the matching value from the list. For Body, I used the name Message to avoid confusion with the other Body value.

Click Save to check the Azure Logic App.

To check the workflow, we need its HTTP POST URL that calls the Azure Logic App. Open the When a HTTP request is received action to find it.

If there is no value in the HTTP POST URL box, try saving the workflow.

Next, copy the value, open a PowerShell script editor and assign the URL to a variable. Next, create the parameters to send to the Azure Logic App by creating a hashtable and using ConvertTo-Json:

If you use Windows PowerShell v5.1, you need to specify the Content-Type of the message manually:

If you use PowerShell 7, you can do that with the ContentType parameter on the Invoke-RestMethod command.

Next, run the Invoke-RestMethod command by using a splat to collect the parameter values.

The finished script looks like the following:

Run a test by sending an email to yourself.

If the email doesn't arrive, check for errors in the run history on the Azure Logic App.

Microsoft Teams has grown to be one of the more popular communications platforms for enterprises, and it's adaptable enough for use with Azure Logic Apps for automated messaging.

To start with this example workflow, set up the When a HTTP request is received action with a sample JSON payload of:

For the first action, search for Microsoft Teams and select the List channels action. Then select a team name. This returns the channels associated with that team.

To find a channel by name and get the ID, click the plus sign to add an action and then scroll to the Choose an operation box. Click the Data Operations Built-in icon.

Locate Filter array from the list. From the dynamic fields, add Channel List in the From section and set the Channel Name as equal to the Channel value from the HTTP POST action.

Next, add a for-each loop by scrolling down in the Choose an operation box, then select Control.

Choose the For each action. For the Select an output from previous steps parameter, choose the Body option from filter array.

You can select Add an action inside the for-each loop that will run for each channel that matches the name that was passed. This should be either 1 or 0.

From there, select Microsoft Teams and the Post message in a chat or channel action.

For the Team parameter, select the same team used in the List channels action.

Then for the Channel, you'll want to select the Enter custom value option.

From the dynamic content, you should see Channel Id under filter array.

Select that value and then set the message to the Message property from the When a HTTP request is received trigger.

Save the workflow to keep your progress. Run a test with a slightly modified version of the script used in the email automated workflow.

If successful, a message will appear in the Microsoft Teams channel.

Microsoft Azure Logic Apps simplifies automated messaging to make it easier to deploy to various places in your infrastructure. You will no longer worry about configuring extra modules to handle authentication to Exchange Online or Microsoft Teams or enabling SMTP authentication and then having to explain yourself to the security team.

The added benefit is your script can scale to the capacity of Azure, so sending out hundreds of emails in a single run will not overwhelm the system. You will have one less concern about your infrastructure and more time to think about the work that matters.

Automate 2022 exceeds expectations with largest attendance and exhibitor count ever – Modern Materials Handling

Posted: at 9:57 pm

The Automate 2022 Show and Conference celebrated the most successful event in its history, setting new records for registrants, exhibit booths and online engagement during its four-day run June 6-9, 2022, in Detroit, Michigan. The show organizer, the Association for Advancing Automation (A3), expects next year to be even bigger with nearly three-quarters of an expanded show floor already booked for Automates return to Detroit, May 22-25, 2023.

Automate 2022 exceeded our most optimistic expectations, said Jeff Burnstein, president of A3. The excitement in the hall was like nothing Ive ever experienced. People loved being back in person and seeing all of the latest advances in robotics, machine vision, AI, motion control and more. This was the largest and best attended trade show weve ever had.

Automate, North Americas largest robotics and automation tradeshow, featured more than 24,000 registrants, 600 exhibitor booths, over 250,000 square feet of exhibit space, and two million virtual views of its digital content. Exhibitors showcased the latest innovations in robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), machine vision, motion control and smart automation, and nearly 200 expert speakers from many of the biggest names in the industry offered insights on the trends and best practices behind the emerging technology in keynotes and conference sessions.

According to exhibitors, attendees at Automate came armed with a list of automation projects in need of solutions. Exhibitors told us that virtually everyone they met at the show has plans to automate, and some exhibitors reported selling robots right off the floor, Burnstein added.

Automate 2023 will be hosted in the same location, at the Huntington Place Convention Center in Detroit May 22-25. Exhibitor spots are filling fast, so interested companies should contact James Hamilton, A3s VP of sales, here to book a booth or explore sponsorship opportunities.

A3s virtual content for Automateboth leading up to the show and through Automate LIVE, produced in partnership with Jake Hall of The Manufacturing Millennial, Chris Luecke of the Manufacturing Happy Hour podcast, Tech B2B Marketing and other leading voices in the automation industryhas already been viewed two million times, with nearly half coming directly from A3s own social media. In the months ahead, A3 will feature this content in addition to important presentations from Automate 2022 to continue the remarkable engagement from the automation community leading up to the 2023 show.

Highlights at Automate, which returned to Detroit after nearly two decades in Chicago, included Covision Quality taking home a $10,000 grand prize as the Cowen Startup Challenge: Automate to Outperform winner for its software that automates and scales visual inspection with unsupervised machine learning technology.

We enjoyed our participation at Automate 2022, said Franz Tschimben, CEO, Covision Quality. The show fulfilled all of our expectations and goals. We got a chance to introduce our company Covision Quality to the US market and to manufacturing companies who want to automate and scale their visual inspection systems. We connected with potential partners - system integrators and hardware manufacturers and we got a chance to see competitive products. Winning the Cowen Startup Challenge is yet another signal that our AI -based visual inspection product is appealing to the manufacturing industry and holds strong growth potential. We will be back at Automate.

Raising the ceiling of code-free programming for robotics and industrial automation – PR Newswire

Posted: at 9:57 pm

MONTREAL, June 21, 2022 /PRNewswire/ - Vention, the cloud-based manufacturing automation platform (MAP), is pleased to announce the launch of MachineLogic V4.0. This is one of its biggest releases since the initial product launch in 2018. Offered on a freemium and subscription basis, new users can leverage the full feature set of MachineLogic in its cloud version, with subscriptions required for those seeking to deploy equipment on the factory floor.

MachineLogic is one of several core products of Vention's manufacturing automation platform (MAP). Focusing on code-free programming, the cloud and edge software provides a unified programming interface across robot brands (Universal Robots, Fanuc, and Doosan), actuators (linear axis, conveyors, and pneumatics) and I/Os (digital and analog). Expert and emerging automation practitioners can easily program robot cells and automated equipment using simple visual sequences from their web browser, or directly on a teach pendant connected to the equipment. The technology saves practitioners from having to learn several proprietary programming languages specific to each robot, PLC, and motor-drive manufacturer.

MachineLogic provides a plug-and-play software and hardware user experience with intuitive component detection and configuration, easy programming, and software-assisted deployment. It works in unison with Vention's motion controller, MachineMotion, and the full library of Vention modular components. MachineLogic V4.0 also has several new features, raising the ceiling of equipment that can be programmed code-free, including multi-MachineMotion compatibility, simultaneous robot and actuator programming, and JavaScript lambda functions. The subscription offering also includes team onboarding training and access to Vention's customer success team for ongoing support.

"MachineLogic is key to our mission of democratizing industrial automation, and subscribers can expect a series of additional features in Q3 and Q4 of 2022,"said Etienne Lacroix, CEO and founder of Vention. "We are only scratching the surface of the user experiences that are possible when you combine industrial automation hardware and engineering software."

MachineLogic V4.0 will be available as of July 25th, with online training and education webinar starting the same week. For more information, including various subscription options and pricing, visit Vention at vention.io/programming.
