Focus on children first

Following the 2008 Heller Supreme Court ruling, a pro-gun family member agreed some gun controls were warranted, but if we give an inch, theyll take a mile. Unfortunately, we pro-choice Americans did not heed the warning. A recent conservative policy letter I received indicated 15-week abortion bans are the beginning; not the end.

If so, where is the conservative judicial support for children and mothers health care, preschool for all, and daycare standard in most civilized countries? How many young parents are imprisoned due to the death of a child they were unable to care for? How many children are raised by grandparents because their children are in prison, died of overdose, or unable to work because of a failed background / drug test? A recent trip to my home state of Indiana showed there are many.

Ranking near the bottom of 30 industrial nations in all categories of childhood well-being, we should focus on living children first.

Ridiculous use of taxpayer money

After reading about Gov. Doug Ducey sending undocumented people to Washington D.C., this is not only a waste of Arizona funds, it is a copycat move, and a really dumb one at that (in my opinion). The government has sent a large amount of money to help with undocumented people issues (including busing) but no, Ducey uses state funds, from taxpayers like you and me.

These funds could be used for schools and teachers, much better for future generations of Arizonans.

This is an embarrassing waste.

Federal government continues the escapade

We read of a baby formula shortage because Abbott, a large producer of formula, closed one of their plants in Michigan. The FDA brought about the decision for plant closure because of two infant deaths suspected to be caused by the formula. Tests have produced no causal relationship. Millions of babies are without formula due to the decision. Who is responsible the government or Abbott? President Biden urged other producing companies to produce more. This is reminiscent of the Energy Department telling the oil industry to curtail investment in drilling, and the president then urging the Saudis to increase oil production as prices skyrocketed at the pump because of the shortage, just like baby formula. And the president pouring money into the economy, while the Fed increases the interest rates to reduce the money trying to curb inflation. Maybe a good Independent will run in the next election.

Responsibility is critical

The abortion issue has sparked very strong opinions on both sides of the discussion. However, an immutable fact is that a woman cannot get pregnant if she does not have sex. A variety of birth control methods are widely available. Therefore, if a woman becomes unintentionally pregnant, barring rape or incest, the woman is either unlucky because the birth control method failed, is careless, is reckless, or has chosen to use abortion as the preferred method of birth control. Like many areas of our life, responsibility is still a critical value.

Protecting lives the priority

Re: the May 27 article Police taking heat over school shooting response.

I currently work at a Pima County retail store. We have automatic door locks that are engaged at the beginning and end of each shift. The doors are locked on the exterior side and can only be opened by pushing the push bar on the interior side of each door. Congress should pass legislation to install this technology on all school doors, except one main door. This entrance could be supervised by a security guard. Enacting this legislation might raise the abysmal approval rating of Congress. We all want to protect the lives of our children, school staff and their teachers, regardless of political persuasion.

Irony

Twenty-one years of age to buy alcohol in most states, 21 to buy cigarettes, 18 to join the military (supervised firearms training), 18 to vote (supposedly old enough to make wise decisions), 18 to buy firearms.

Lets change things

What is it going to take to make the changes that the majority of us want? Addressing gun safety, climate change, abortion rights and the ability to make a living wage.

We need the help of Independents. We need the help of young voters, there is a large army of young voters 18-and-up.

Now is the time to make changes in legislatures in Arizona and the U.S. Congress who are not addressing the issues or do not have the votes to get it done.

You young voters can and must make your presence felt.

Independents represent approximately one-third of voters. Step up, make your vote count. Lets all vote for candidates who have committed to addressing the above issues.

I am 75 years old, I will not see all of these changes happen in my lifetime. But I would love for it to happen for my children and grandchildren.

Congratulations

Marys Mission Development Center recognizes the achievement of young adults graduating from high school this year. The commitment and strength, both mental and physical, to complete high school will help you prepare for your future life endeavors.

Guns for protection

Re: the May 30 article Americas gun problem dates back to Founders.

Leonard Pitts tries to convince us that the Founders adopted the Second Amendment guaranteeing Americans the right to bear arms only to keep slaves suppressed, but any reading of the Founders discredits this claim. The Founders wanted to make sure that Americans could own guns in order to protect themselves from predatory individuals and from oppressive government. The Revolutionary War guaranteeing the freedom that Mr. Pitts enjoys today could not have been won without the use of firearms by the colonists.

Further, Mr. Pitts never mentions the fact that 620,000 soldiers, most of them white, died in the Civil War in order to end slavery in this country.

Finally, Mr. Pitts never addresses the problem of Black-on-Black crime today. In 2020, almost 10,000 Blacks died in homicides.

So, Mr. Pitts, what are your answers here?

Leftist extremists? The rabid right?

It sure seems every commercial the GOP is running on Arizona TV talks about leftist extremists. It sounds like every Democrat running is a communist who hates God and country. How sad that so many think so simplistically. I abhor these commercials and mute immediately. No substance offered, just slogans and hate.

Am I supposed to hate all who disagree with me? Are all members of the GOP monsters? Is every Republican a member of the rabid right? God, I hope not. Its gotten harder to really hear the voices of people when the level of vitriol we hear is repeated constantly. The next time a political ad comes on, stop and ask yourself are these things really true? For instance, how can Sen. Mark Kelly be a leftie, when he votes against things others in his party might want? Think! Engage your brain. Look for the truth.

Cannot trust Biden and Democrats on gun control

After recent mass shootings in New York and Texas, Biden and Democrats have come out demanding a ban on assault rifles (AR). Some Republicans in Congress have reportedly signaled a willingness to discuss some gun control measures. But then came President Biden over the weekend declaring that the Second Amendment is not absolute and that 9mm handguns and 9mm ammunition are high caliber and have no rational basis for self defense. Does Biden know that the 9mm ammo round is considered by many ballistic experts as the minimal for self defense with more potent pistol calibers being the .45 ACP, .357 magnum and .44 magnum? The most popular handgun in America is the 9mm, carried by millions of law-abiding citizens for home and self protection. Does Biden know that in D.C. v. Heller, SCOTUS ruled that states can place reasonable limitations on firearms? Bidens progressive protg Canadian PM Justin Trudeau just proposed a mandatory government buyback of citizens ARs and a halt to all future handgun sales and transfers.

Sports betting in Florida: Has it been legalized, how to bet online, where to find picks and best promos – CBS Sports

Posted: at 12:51 pm

Sports fans in Florida are waiting and wondering when legal online sportsbooks will return to their state. Florida online sports betting was briefly launched in November 2021 through a compact between the state and the Seminole Tribe, one of the tribes which oversees Indian Gaming in the state. But the tribe had concerns within a month of the launch and are now in the process of trying to get the compact appealed, saying Florida online sportsbooks violate the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. Seminole-run in-person casino gambling, such as card games and slot machines, and pari-mutuel horse racing are current legal forms of gambling in Florida, but Florida online sportsbooks can't resume operations until legal proceedings are finalized. Some sportsbooks are still hopeful, however, that Florida onlines sportsbooks will return in the near future.

If Florida online sports betting returns, Florida sports fans will surely be happy to take advantage of online sportsbook sign-up offers and online sportsbook promotion codes again. If you need a refresher on Florida online sports betting terminology in the meantime, here is a sports betting glossary from our friends at SportsLine.

When Florida online sports betting returns, there are multiple ways sports fans in the Sunshine State can wager on their favorite sports teams and leagues. Here are some examples:

Over-under: This betting method is perfect for when you think a game or match will have a very high or very low score, like in pro basketball. Sportsbooks will set a total number of points expected for a game and then bettors decide which side of that number the combined scores will land on. So, if the over-under for a pro basketball playoff game between Boston and Golden State is 210, you can bet on whether the total of the two scores will be more or less than that number.

Parlay: Parlays are popular because they offer sports bettors a chance to win big with a minimal investment, and they are exciting because the risk is higher. Parlays involve the selection of two or more propositions on a single wager, and all of the teams must win for the bet to become a winner. For example, if you pick five pro baseball teams on a money line parlay then all five teams have to win for the bet to be a winner. If only four teams win, the bet does not cash.

Teaser: This method pays lower odds than a parlay, but remains popular because handicappers still find them profitable. Teasers are a variation of point-spread betting in which they allow the bettor to increase the point value of their selected team. For example, let's say both of Florida's football teams are seven-point favorites and you think they will win their games but you are unsure if they will cover the spread. Using a six-point teaser will drop each team to a -1 favorite, meaning they only need to win by two points for your bet to be good.

Sports betting in Pennsylvania: Promo codes, promotions, best legal apps, how to bet online in PA – CBS Sports

Posted: at 12:51 pm

Pennsylvania online sports betting has grown in popularity since it first launched in May 2019. Online sportsbooks in Pennsylvania now bring in well over $7 million in handle, so clearly sports fans in the Keystone State are taking advantage of special deals at Pennsylvania online sportsbooks. With so many sports in season right now, it's the perfect time for Pennsylvania sports fans to take advantage of online sportsbook signup offers and unique online sportsbook promo codes. With pro basketball down to its final two teams, elite golf tournaments happening every weekend and baseball season heating up, it's the perfect time to see what Pennsylvania online sports betting has to offer.

If you are a first-time bettor at Pennsylvania online sportsbooks, learning all the best betting terms can be a little overwhelming. Here is a helpful guide to get you started so you can wager like a pro.

Here are several ways you can bet on sports in Pennsylvania from our friends at SportsLine:

Over-Under: This method is very popular in sports betting and best used if you are expecting a game to have a very high or very low score, like in pro basketball. Sportsbooks will set a total number of points expected for a game and then bettors decide which side of that number the combined scores will land on. If the over-under for a playoff basketball game between Boston and Golden State is 200, bettors at online sportsbooks in Pennsylvania can bet on whether the total of the two scores will be more or less than 200.

Parlay: Parlays are popular because they offer sports bettors a chance to win big with a minimal investment, and they are exciting because the risk is higher. Parlays involve the selection of two or more propositions on a single wager, and all of the teams must win for the bet to become a winner. For example, if you pick five pro baseball teams on a parlay then all five teams have to win for the bet to be a winner. If only four teams cover the spread, the bet is a loser. The baseball schedule is jam-packed with games this time of year, making it the perfect time to place your parlay bet.

Teaser: This method pays lower odds than a parlay, but remains popular because handicappers still find them profitable. Teasers are a variation of point-spread betting in which they allow the bettor to increase the point value of their selected team. For example, let's say both of Pennsylvania's football teams are seven-point favorites and you think they will win their games but you are unsure if they will cover the spread. Using a six-point teaser will drop each team to a -1 favorite, meaning they only need to win by two points for your bet to be good.

Sports betting in California: When it will be legalized, how to bet online, where to get picks, promos – CBS Sports

Posted: at 12:51 pm

Summer is a big time for sports, but sports fans in California are looking to the fall to see if online sports betting will be legalized. California has Indian gaming casinos and horse racetracks for some in-person betting, but a new bill to be voted on in November could make online sports betting in California a reality. The Golden State loves its professional sports teams, so California online sportsbook sign-offers and other California sports-betting promotions will be very popular if California online sports betting is legalized. If this new bill passes and California sports books get the green light, California sports fans will be able to use online sportsbook promo codes and place wagers from the comfort of their own homes.

Until California online sportsbooks become a reality, bettors can head to the race track and take part in the little bit of California sports betting the state has to offer. They can also brush up on their sports-betting terms with this quick guide from our friends at SportsLine.

There are several ways you can make sports wagers both online and in retail sportsbooks and plenty of bet types you'll want to familiarize yourself with.

Outright: An outright bet is one of the easiest and most popular bets to place. Simply, this is a wager on which team or athlete will win a game or event. So an outright bet in a golf tournament is on which golfer will win it all.

Parlay: Parlays are wagers that are combined with other wagers to multiply the payout. If you put together a three-leg parlay, all three bets you've strung together must win for the overall parlay to pay out. A three-leg basketball bet usually involves picking three teams to cover. If all of them do, you win.

Futures: A futures bet is typically popular in pro sports like football, which Californians will be able to bet on if the new bill passes. Until then, sports fans can place futures bets on horse races. Whether it is one of the big races happening this time of year or a smaller race at your local track, you can place a futures bet for a larger payout than you would betting on that horse on race day.

If you're looking for the best values on the board in California or elsewhere, be sure to check out SportsLine, which specializes in Vegas picks, DFS advice and season-long fantasy sports projections.

April sports betting in Virginia was 70% higher than last year – The Center Square

Posted: at 12:51 pm

(The Center Square) Online sports betting in Virginia declined from March to April of this year, but Aprils numbers were nearly 70% higher than they were in April of last year, according to numbers released by the sports betting analysis website PlayVirginia.com.

Without football or a big betting event like the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament, sportsbooks traditionally lose steam heading into the summer, Eric Ramsey, an analyst with PlayVirginia parent company PlayUSA, said in a statement.

But the year-over-year gains remain consistently strong, showing that the industry has so far been mostly unaffected by struggles in the greater economy, Ramsey continued. But those headwinds do represent the most significant threat to the relentless growth Virginias sports betting industry has enjoyed since the beginning.

In April, people placed nearly $400 million worth of sports bets in Virginia sportsbooks, which is 69% higher than last Aprils $236.4 million of bets. It is, however, 15% lower than Marchs bets, which amounted to nearly $470 million. There were about $13.3 million bets per day in April, compared to $15.1 million per day in March.

Despite the lower betting numbers in April, sportsbooks made more money. By the end of the month, sportsbooks took in about $36.3 million in gross revenue, compared to $33.7 million in March. Aprils revenue was also 86% higher than it was last year, in which sportsbooks only took in $19.4 million in revenue.

Sportsbooks paid about $3 million in state taxes in April.

There was enough general interest in the NBA Playoffs, the Final Four, and the first month of baseball, among other attractions, to engage bettors in April, Ramsey said. Those opportunities will shrink in the coming months, until football season kicks off. But Virginias young market is well-positioned for another surge this fall.

Online sports betting is less than a year and a half old in the commonwealth. The bets became legal on Jan. 21, 2021 after former Gov. Ralph Northam signed legislation in 2020 to legalize the practice.

TheScore Bet Exiting US Sports Betting, Will Focus On Canada – Legal Sports Report

Posted: at 12:51 pm

TheScore Bet is leaving the United States with its sports betting product after struggling to make an impact in the market.

TheScore Bet is shutting down its US sportsbook operation July 1, a company spokesperson confirmed Wednesday to Legal Sports Report. The operator will shut down its sportsbook inNew Jersey, Colorado, Indiana and Iowa and will turn its focus toOntario sports betting.

Since Penns acquisition of theScore, the companys plan has been to lead with Barstool Sportsbook in the U.S. and theScore Bet in Canada, given our strong brand equity there, theScore President and COO Benjie Levy said in a statement. With theScore Bet launched and thriving in Ontario, and as we approach a major undertaking this summer with the launch of our proprietary risk and trading service, the timing is right to focus our U.S. efforts on marketing Barstool Sportsbook and our Canadian efforts on marketing theScore Bet.

This move enables us to maximize the value of both brands through our organic media and gaming approach. Key to our strategy is integrating theScore media app with Barstool Sportsbook in the U.S., which were currently working towards. Bringing together theScores powerful sports media platform with Barstool Sportsbook, supported by our in-house technology will strengthen the overall U.S. product offering and broaden its reach.

TheScore Bet will stop accepting wagers on June 15, according to an FAQ on itswebsite.

Bets on events completed before July 1 will remain active. For wagers beyond that date, the company will reach out to bettors directly.

If a user does not withdraw remaining funds before July 1, the company will mail a check or deposit money via another method on file.

The announcement to leave the US also includes a push to Barstool Sportsbook. Both brands are part of the Penn National Gaming portfolio.

Penn National bought36% of Barstool in 2020 for $136 million. The company acquired theScore last year for $2.1 billion.

Barstool Sportsbook is live in 12 states, including the four states theScore is leaving. Penn National plans to shift the Barstool to theScores in-house sports betting platform in the future.

Based in Toronto, the US sports betting exit will allow theScore to focus on sports betting in Canada.

While Ontario regulators have not released sports betting information since the April launch, there are indications the sportsbook is starting well in the province.

Before the commercial online gaming launch, the company already had Canadas most popular sports media app.

While the sportsbook sees success in Ontario, it has not made much of an impact in the US sports betting market.

In April, theScore secured less than 1% market share in Indiana sports betting. In Iowa, Barstool and theScore combined for a5.1% market share in April.

TheScore is the latest sportsbook to either shut down US operations or begin to scale back US sports betting investment.

In February, Churchill Downs announced it was shutting down its online sports betting and casino business. The company had replaced its BetAmerica brand with its TwinSpiresbrand last year.

WynnBet and Caesars Sportsbook also have scaled back their marketing spending in the past year.

Responsible gambling advocates keeping eye on increasing ‘normalization’ of sports betting – CBC.ca

Posted: at 12:51 pm

CBC Saskatchewan is looking at single-event sports betting in the province. This story is a part of a series examining its impact.

Read Part 1 here, which focuses on a Conservative MP whosays the Saskatchewangovernment has "dropped the ball" onsingle-event sports betting. Hisprivate member's bill paved the way for its legalization in Canada.

Shauna Altrogge says a few thoughts come to mind as she sees the recent proliferation of sports betting ads on television, especially as it relates to youth.

"I think one of them is how socially acceptable gambling has become in our culture, but also to a further extent, how socially acceptable sports gambling has become," she said.

As the director of the Gambling Awareness Program with the Canadian Mental Health Association's Saskatchewan division, it's part of Altrogge's job to educate the public about how to gamble responsibly.

Her organization has called Saskatchewan "a province where gambling is extremely common." It said roughly 75 per cent of Saskatchewan adults gamble and spend, on average, $855 on gambling each year.

Altrogge said when it comes to youth and sports gambling, there are things that concern her organization. She said it's almost seen as a different type of gambling activity thanlotteries, casinos and slot machines.

"There's almost a sense of it's more skill-based. And if I have good team knowledge, good stats on my players, those sorts of things, it will allow me to be successful at it," she said.

"I think what's missing in that piece is that we also have to remember that there is risk and chance involved."

Her other concerns centre around the "fairly robust advertising" for "heavily-promoted" sports betting apps and platforms, as well as the influence of celebrity endorsements.

"I mean, sitting down and watching the hockey game in the evening and you've got little kids consuming those same ads," she said.

"Over time, what effect could that possibly have on our younger folks? When you look at all of those things, it's a bit of a worry."

Elaine McDougall, the director of marketing and communications at the Responsible Gambling Council (RGC), agreed that there is concern about how much exposure children who are sports fans are getting to sports betting ads.

"There's this normalization of sports betting happening as you're seeing all of these ads come in," she said.

McDougall said that this year, as RGC develops its usual prevention programming for youth and schools in Ontario, it is increasing the messaging around sports betting for that exact reason.

RGC and thinktv, a marketing and research association dedicated to the advancement of commercial television, are working on a PSA broadcast campaign around harm prevention and gambling thatMcDougall said will hopefully launch in the fall first in Ontario, and then possibly in other jurisdictions.

"If this is meant to be entertainment, it's important that you know how to place that wager, how to do this in a safe way so that you're not spending money that's intended for rent or groceries," she said.

Sportsnet declined a request from CBC News to provide the number of complaints it has received from the public related to sports betting ads and content during this year's television broadcasts of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

But in an emailed statement, a Sportsnet spokesperson said, "We recognize that sports betting content and advertising represents a change for audiences and we are being thoughtful about the volume and content of the commercial inventory that we are allotting to sports betting partners to ensure we continue to offer a quality viewing experience."

The statement also said Sportsnet is committed to promoting and educating audiences about the importance of betting responsibly, adding a portion of its airtime is dedicated to PSAs and responsible gaming messaging.

When asked about single-event betting ads intended for Ontario audiences that appear on screens in other provinces, Sportsnet said all ads that air nationally include a disclaimer indicating that the products are not available outside of the province-of-origin of the ad.

Kevin Waugh, the MP for Saskatoon-Grasswood whose private member's bill paved the way for legal single-event sports betting in Canada last year, said "it's been a little excessive on the advertising."

"We don't get it in Saskatchewan, but when I come here to Ottawa, my Twitter feed is filled with all these ads," he said.

"Like every third posting. It's gone overboard."

Waugh said he was also "totally shocked" that active professional athletes would sign agreements with gambling companies.

Waugh has also noticed a shift in the way some sports broadcasters will describe game situations.

He said he was watching a baseball game on TV earlier this spring in which it was 6-1 in the late innings and the announcer said, "That's a very important run at second base."

It was a reference to the over/under for the game, he said.

"So it wasn't a very important run for the game, but it was for the bettors," he said.

"I'm a little disappointed in the announcing in North America. A 'very important run' 6-1 in the eighth inning. Are you kidding me? That should never be.

"But media outlets are hungry for extra revenue, extra eyeballs on TV."

Mia Danakas-Weinkauf, a co-owner of Mr. D's Stats Cocktails & Dreams sports bar in Regina, said she has noticed a "great increase" of their customers who ask for specific games to be shown on their TVs and then watch their online bets on their devices.

She said it's a new phenomenon that they didn't really see before the pandemic restrictions. It includes specific requests for matches or sports that never used to be requested, including soccer and tennis, she said.

Danakas-Weinkauf said the change has also prompted her to subscribe to a feed of NFL games.

"I've never actually had to do that before," she said. "Because a lot of the games that were just on, people were just watching. Which means there must be an increase of something that's going on because they ask for specific games."

Danakas-Weinkauf said she really wishes sports bars in Saskatchewan could get directly involved by being allowed to open sportsbooks.

"I'm hoping that something maybe comes up that our government could either enforce or come up with a plan that can help the businesses even more for the losses that we've had," she said.

CBC Saskatchewan wants to hear personal stories from people in the province about their experiences with single-event sports betting. If you are willing to share your perspective in a news story, please email sasknews@cbc.ca.

A series opener between the Oakland Athletics (20-33) and Boston Red Sox (24-27) is on deck Friday at 9:40 PM ET, at Oakland Coliseum.

As the favorite, the Red Sox (-135 on the moneyline to win) take the field at the Athletics (+115). The matchup on the mound for this contest is set with the Boston Red Sox looking to Nathan Eovaldi (2-2), and James Kaprielian (0-2) getting the nod for the Oakland Athletics.

In Maryland, Mayor Ray Morriss and the Cumberland City Council voted earlier this week to allow a sports gambling establishment within city limits. It appears Morriss is hopeful the city will add a retail betting location, and changes to zoning guidelines were adopted to make that a possibility.

Maryland legislation named 17 entities that would receive retail sports wagering licenses, but there are also an additional 30 retail licenses available for locations across the state through a competitive application process. Maryland also allows for the distribution of 60 mobile sports betting licenses.

Im very hopeful someone in Cumberland will be licensed, Morriss said. I hope the state spreads them out and puts one in Cumberland. I think it would be a great asset to have here. Any kind of entertainment offering that comes to the area can only bring more people and money into our community.

Cumberland is located on the east side of Maryland, near the West Virginia and Pennsylvania borders. Both West Virginia and Pennsylvania offer legal sports betting.

In the last week, theScore Bet rolled out a unique responsible gaming program in Ontario, the Mohegan Tribe in Connecticut donated $2 million to Yale University to combat problem gambling, and the Oregon Council on Problem Gambling opened an RFP for new research opportunities.

While problem and responsible gaming are intertwined, they are distinctly different initiatives addressing different populations. Problem gambling programs work with individuals who are already addicted, while responsible gambling programs provide tools to help consumers identify and prevent problems from developing before they take root. That education, according to advocates, is critical and should be ongoing.

When asked how long operators should advertise responsible gaming initiatives, Keith Whyte, the executive director of the National Council on Problem Gambling, told Sports Handle, Until its effective. How much do we need to make sure that every player in a jurisdiction has seen it and understood the message? You can figure that out by using focus groups and polling, but its probably like a lot of campaigns, like drunk driving you can always reinforce it. There is always a new generation that can hear the message. Its a public health issue.

In just its eighth month of sports wagering, South Dakota reported its first monthly loss, as bettors came out $13,735 ahead on nearly $370,000 wagered in April.

Retail sportsbooks in Deadwood continued to pay out winning NFL tickets, as operators posted a net loss of nearly $5,400. But where bettors pounded the book was in golf, which had been dominated by the house in the first seven months. Bettors collected close to $32,965 off only $14,295 wagered, resulting in a staggering -133.3% hold for the house.

Prior to April, operators posted an 89.9% win rate in golf, as they paid out only $648 on $6,435 wagered, and there was not a winning wager statewide until February for all of $9. It is the first monthly net revenue loss for a state with legal wagering since Delaware finished $969,519 under in December.
