Google contacts each MP over fast-tracking of online news bill through Commons – CP24 Toronto’s Breaking News

Posted: June 1, 2022 at 8:09 pm

OTTAWA - Google has taken the extraordinary step of writing to every MP and senator expressing fears that the online news bill is being rushed through Parliament without proper debate or consideration.

In its letter, Google warns that the bill needs more scrutiny because of its implications, including for the way the search engine ranks content and elevates information from trusted sources such as the government.

Bill C-18, as it is known in Parliament, is designed to support the Canadian news industry and would make online platforms such as Google and Meta compensate media organizations for reusing their journalism.

In its letter, Google says it agrees with the bill's aim to support Canadian journalism, including financially, but says there are multiple flaws in the proposed legislation that could have far-reaching consequences.

It lists a series of misconceptions about how the bill will work in practice, warning parliamentarians that, as worded, it could force Google to subsidize foreign state-owned news outlets.

It said the bill has a very broad definition of eligible news businesses and could mean that foreign state-owned outlets could be eligible even if they are known sources of misinformation and propaganda.

The letter also warns that, as currently worded, the bill's undue preference provision may prohibit features that elevate information from trusted sources (including government information) or reduce low quality information (including from eligible foreign state media outlets).

The breadth of this provision threatens potential liability for any type of ranking or moderation of news content or any action that might have a negative impact on any outlet, even if that outlet is known to produce propaganda or disinformation, the letter adds.

But Laura Scaffidi, a spokeswoman for Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez, said the Online News Act is critically important legislation to ensure that tech giants fairly pay Canadian publishers and journalists for their work.

The government has fast-tracked the bill through the Commons, reducing the amount of time it is debated on the floor of the House before going into committee for closer scrutiny.

Scaffidi said the bill has been referred to committee for further study and discussion from MPs, experts and other witnesses and will return to the House of Commons and Senate for further debate.

But Conservative House leader John Brassard accused the government of limiting and stifling debate of the bill by MPs.

I'm profoundly disappointed they moved a time allocation on such a highly contentious bill that needs significant work, he said. What they are doing is simply bypassing the House of Commons. We only had two hours of debate on C-18 and, as the official Opposition, we only had one speaker.

Google spokeswoman Lauren Skelly said: Getting this right is much more important than getting it done quickly.

She said Google wrote to MPs and senators because it was important for them to know where we stand and said the bill as currently written was deeply flawed.

She added, in a statement, that Google was strongly in favour of contributing financially to support a sustainable future for journalism and the news ecosystem in Canada.

Paul Deegan of News Media Canada, which represents the country's news media industry, said this is important legislation that should be studied by the heritage committee without delay.

It will benefit publishers large and small - as similar legislation has in Australia.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 1, 2022.

Meta funds a fellowship that supports journalism positions at The Canadian Press.

U.S. bill would bar Google, Apple from hosting apps that accept China’s digital yuan – Reuters

Posted: at 8:09 pm

WASHINGTON, May 26 (Reuters) - Republican senators want to bar U.S. app stores including Apple and Google from hosting apps that allow payments to be made with China's digital currency, amid fears the payment system could allow Beijing to spy on Americans.

The bill, unveiled Thursday and first reported by Reuters, states that companies that own or control app stores "shall not carry or support any app in [their] app store(s) within the United States that supports or enables transactions in e-CNY." It is sponsored by Senators Tom Cotton, Marco Rubio and Mike Braun.

According to Cotton's office, digital yuan could provide the Chinese government with "real-time visibility into all transactions on the network, posing privacy and security concerns for American persons who join this network."

Register

The Center for a New American Security, a Washington, D.C.-based think tank, said in a January 2021 report that China's digital currency and electronic payments system was "likely to be a boon for CCP surveillance in the economy and for government interference in the lives of Chinese citizens," noting that "transactions will contain precise data about users and their financial activity."

The move comes after WeChat, a messaging and payment application owned by China's Tencent with over 1.2 billion users, announced it would begin supporting the currency earlier this year. Alipay, the hugely popular payments app owned by Jack Ma's Ant Group, also accepts the digital currency. Both apps are available in the Apple and Google App stores.

Apple Inc (AAPL.O), Alphabet Inc's (GOOGL.O) Google, Ant Group (688688.SS) and Tencent (0700.HK) did not respond to requests for comment.

The Chinese Embassy in Washington called the legislation "another example of the United States wantonly bullying foreign companies by abusing state power on the untenable ground of national security."

While stopping potential national security threats related to China is a rare point of bipartisan agreement in the deeply divided U.S. Congress, prospects for the bill's passage ahead of midterm elections are uncertain.

Google working on built-in snore and cough detection for Pixel, Android – 9to5Google

Posted: at 8:09 pm

As seen by camera-based heart and respiratory rate tracking in Fit for Android, one aspect of Googles Health initiative is leveraging existing devices to collect health data. Google is now in the process of testing on-device snore and cough detection for Android and/or Pixel.

About APK Insight: In this APK Insight post, weve decompiled the latest version of an application that Google uploaded to the Play Store. When we decompile these files (called APKs, in the case of Android apps), were able to see various lines of code within that hint at possible future features. Keep in mind that Google may or may not ever ship these features, and our interpretation of what they are may be imperfect. Well try to enable those that are closer to being finished, however, to show you how theyll look in case that they do ship. With that in mind, read on.

Google Health Studies hit version 2.0 this week to support the launch of a new digital wellbeing study. Strings in that update reveal a Sleep Audio Collection study thats only available to Google employees.

You must be a Full Time Googler with an Android phone to participate in this study. Environmental conditions required for this study are to have no more than one adult sleeper in the same room who does not work for a competitor company.

Google explains that its Health Sensing team is actively working to bring an advanced suite of sensing capabilities and algorithms to Android devices with the goal of providing users with meaningful insight into their sleep. This audio collection supports this mission by providing data necessary to validate, tune, and develop such algorithms.

These Cough and Snore algorithms will translate into a bedside monitoring feature on Android devices that works in a privacy-preserving, on-device manner for nocturnal cough and snore monitoring.

Its unclear whether snore and cough detection will be a broader Android feature or a Pixel exclusive. At the very least, it might debut first on the Pixel. Its unclear what app this capability will live in, with Google Fit and Clock being obvious candidates.

Back in 2020, Google introduced a Bedtime hub in Google Clock that works with Digital Wellbeing to estimate time spent in bed. This involves granting the Clock app access to motion and light detection. Meanwhile, Fitbit offers Snore & Noise Detect on the Sense and Versa 3, while the second-generation Nest Hub has a similar capability.

Another theory to consider is that this capability is for the upcoming Nest Tablet in its presumed Smart Display/docked (via pogo pins) configuration. That said, Google would reach more users by making this available on all Android phones.

Releaf Paper awarded funding as part of Google initiative to support Ukrainian start-ups – Packaging Europe

Posted: at 8:09 pm

Releaf Paper, a Ukrainian company that extracts cellulose fibres from fallen leaves to make paper packaging, has been awarded $100,000 in funding and mentorship from Google as part of theGoogle for Startups Ukraine Support Fund.

In March, Google announced a $5 million Google for Startups Ukraine Support Fund with plans to award equity-free, non-dilutive funding to around 50 Ukraine-based start-ups on a rolling basis throughout 2022. The start-ups are also invited to use the Google for Startups Campus Warsaw as a temporary office space, and will receive mentorship, product support, and Cloud credits from Google.

Eligible start-ups must have been founded and based in Ukraine before February 24th, 2022. Start-ups must also have surpassed the minimum variable product (MVP) stage with proven traction, such as products being on the market and generating early revenue. Google says that companies with a social impact mission will be prioritised.

Google intends for founders to use the non-dilutive cash award to continue growth or resume business operations that have been impacted by the war in Ukraine following Russias invasion in February 2022. The company also expects recipients to pivot products to address new challenges.

Support for Ukrainian-led startups will help them succeed and build the tech that their country needs now. And as the region starts to recover, startups and tech companies will be key to rebuilding the Ukrainian economy, creating jobs, and positively impact the cities they make their homes, Google explained when announcing the Fund.

Google has today announced the initial recipients of the Google for Startups Ukraine Support Fund, with Releaf Paper being one of the first companies to be awarded the $100,000 in funding and other support measures.

Founded by Valentyn Frechka and Alexander Sobolenko, Releaf started as a secondary school project to extract high-quality cellulose from fallen leaves for Frechka, who was a member of the Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine at the time.

The Releaf concept has since evolved into a four-step process. Firstly, the fallen leaves are collected from urban environments where they would otherwise be considered waste; the leaves are then cleaned and processed in a chemical reactor to extract the fibres. Next, the fibres are washed and ground in a process that does not use sulphur or chlorine chemical components. Finally, the fibrous pulp is mixed with bio-based fillers to produce rolls of paper.

Releafs paper production process reportedly offers 33.22% lower CO2 emissions compared to the production of paper from wastepaper, as well as a 79.32% reduction compared to the production of paper from wood pulp.

Sobolenko, one of the co-founders of Releaf says: Customers in retail stores would like to see less plastic packaging but more natural and biosafe [products]. We promote an idea that paper must be woodless and people keeping our product are proud to feel contribution in forest conservation.

However, Sobolenko told Packaging Europe that it was too late to evacuate Releafs warehouses when Russia invaded Ukraine in February. With the focus being on protecting and supporting its employees, one of Releafs paper mills suspended its activities; the Releaf team also lost communication with another vendor based in Kharkiv. The company were unable to finalise projects with major cosmetic brands, NYX and Kiehls, in the aftermath of the invasion, but set out to sell some of its paper stock and donate the money to Ukrainian refugees.

Sobolenko highlights the importance of supporting Ukrainian businesses. The best thing the packaging industry can do to support its Ukrainian colleagues is to continue buying Made in Ukraine products, he explained in the same interview. Not a single entrepreneur is caring now about profits, but everyone is trying their best to save the countrys economy and provide other people with means for living.

So, by buying Ukrainian paper, packaging, or services, other companies contribute immensely to the survival of the Ukrainian economy and human lives.

The Google for Startups Ukraine Support Fund appears to share a similar goal. Overall, Google says that the funding and mentorship are intended to help Ukrainian entrepreneurs maintain and grow their businesses, strengthen their community, and build a foundation for post-war economic recovery.

In a LinkedIn post sharing the news, Frechka comments on the Google funding: Circumstances in Ukraine have put our project in a state of uncertainty for some time, but in order to be able to see the future, we continued to work. Therefore, we are pleased to share the first news about the first fruits of long work.

Our innovative project Re-Leaf Paper Technology was recognized by Google as one of the best startups in Ukraine and will receive funding from the Google for Startups Foundation.

It is gratifying and strange to receive such recognition as the only manufacturing company in the cohort of IT businesses. We are sure that Google cannot be wrong!

Eligible companies can continue to apply for the Google for Startups Ukraine Support Fund here.

Informatica eases data management with Oracle, Google, and Azure integrations – CIO

Posted: at 8:09 pm

New partnerships with Oracle, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud are highlighting Informaticas strategy to dominate the market for data management products by offering integrations that cut down the time and complexity of data migration, management and engineering tasks.

The partnerships, announced this week at the annual Informatica World conference, boost the capabilities of the companys Intelligent Data Management Cloud (IDMC) and are in sync with the companys recent data management product releases and previous partnerships with cloud software and service providers including AWS, Databricks and Snowflake.

At the conference, Informatica launched two new industry-focused IDMCs for financial services and healthcare firms, as well as new data engineering and MLOps tools.

Informatica has been slowly executing its plan to go beyond the ETL (extract, transform and load) tools it has been known for. Crucial to this strategy are moves to deepen its partnerships with major cloud service providers so that all Informatica customers, regardless of their cloud vendor, can take advantage of the range of its offerings for migrating, planning, analyzing, engineering and governing data.

The key focus seems to be to eliminate the need for multiple vendors or platforms for data management and analytics, at a time when siloed data and the complexity of managing modern applications are plaguing enterprises.

Among this weeks announcements, the company said that it was extending its relationship with Microsoft to include a private preview of a SaaS (software as a service) version of Informaticas Master Data Management (MDM) product on Azure, which will be available via the Azure Marketplace.

The SaaS service is part of Informaticas data management cloud, and the partnership is meant to enable joint customers to rapidly combine and rationalize hundreds of data sources for all their critical business operations, resulting in a repository of trusted data that can used to generate business insights, according to the company.

In addition, the company has added new governance capabilities to IDMC on Azure, to allow users to apply management and security rules to the flow of data from disparate sources to Microsofts Power BI analytics software.

This will enable Informatica to provide a complete view of data governance from data source to data consumption, the company said.

The new capabilities follow a partnership with Microsoft for a cloud analytics program launched in November 2021 that, according to the companies, enables almost 90% automated data migration to Azure.

Extending its partnership with Google Cloud, Informatica this week said that it was launching a new free cloud service, named Informatica Data Loader for Google BigQuery, in the form of a SaaS offering.

The SaaS service, which the company claims is a zero-code, zero-devops and zero-infrastructure offering, is designed to allow enterprise users to generate insights faster because of its ability to ingest data from multiple source connecters to the Google data warehouse.

The Data Loader can be accessed directly from the Google BigQuery console, providing access to all Google Cloud customers, Informatica and Google said in a joint statement.

In October 2021, Informatica partnered with Google to offer a joint data migration program.

Informatica has also added Oracle to its list of partners. The partnership between the two companies entails support for Informaticas IDMC platform on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), Oracle Autonomous Database, Oracle Exadata Database Service, Oracle Exadata Cloud@Customer, and Oracle Object Storage.

IDMC, which will be made available in the Oracle Cloud Marketplace, is expected to help facilitate data platform modernization by easing the move of on-premises workloads to OCI, Informatica said, adding that the partnership will enable enterprises to gain insights at scale while leveraging their existing investments.

The announcements this week follow similar moves last year. In September last year, Informatica announced an on-prem to cloud migration program with Snowflake, followed by a similar partnership with AWS in December. It also has a partnership with Databricks.

In addition to the data migration programs, a key part of Informaticas data management strategy for enterprises are features that allow disparate teams and departments within companies to share data sets. Last November, it released Cloud Data Marketplace, designed to allow employees within an organization to share ready-to-use data sets for use with AI and analytics models.

This week at its conference, Informatica said that its annual recurring revenue for cloud offerings has grown 43% year-over-year as of March 31, with IDMCs artificial intelligence engine, dubbed CLAIRE, processing over 32 trillion transactions on the cloud each month for the same period.

The company, which counts Pepsi, Volvo, ADT, Telus, FreddieMac, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas City and Hershey as its customers, expects CLAIRE to double the amount of transactions it processes over the next year.

What to Expect When You’re Expecting Nelson Velzquez: Waveland-Bound Power – bleachernation.com

Posted: at 8:08 pm

As the Cubs continue to be pushed to the limit on their depth, it appears Nelson Velzquez will be the latest Cubs prospect to join the team in Chicago. Hes up today for the double-header against the Brewers.

Velzquez is coming up, fittingly, with his last minor league game being his best since joining Triple-A Iowa. Hes held the top position in my Five Stars many, many times for the last year, and also won MVP in the Arizona Fall League with an incredible performance. I wrote at the time about the elite company his performance in that league put him in, and how that might suggest a brighter future than his presence in prospect rankings suggests. It led to him securing a 40-man roster spot in November.

Velzquez, 23, was my tenth-ranked prospect in the system in my latest rankings earlier this month.

A fifth-round pick in 2017 out of a PJ Education School in Puerto Rico, Velzquez was then a thin-but-strong player with a nice blend of power and speed. Signing scout Edwards Guzman talked about a fantastic batting practice he took as an amateur at Wrigley Field. His stock jumped in 2018 when he showed both skills with the short-season Eugene Emeralds, notching 11 home runs and 12 steals in 72 games with the club.

But when Velzquez returned in 2019, hed become so strong that it had seemed to sap a lot of his athleticism. The defense began to look fringy, stolen bases were no longer a threat, and oddly, his growing strength wasnt translating in the power department. Things were trending the wrong way.

The story of Nelsons rise since then is one of taking ownership of your career. During the 2020 shutdown, Velzquez really worked hard, getting more baseball reps than almost anyone in the organization, and re-discovering some of that lost athleticism. Velzquez is barrel-chested like few others, with big, strong arms and thighs.

When he came back in 2021, Velzquez could again be trusted in center field, though I think his best fit is in right field, where his fabulous throwing arm allows him to pile up assists (18 in 201 professional games in right). While his initial burst of speed isnt elite, Velzquez runs well once he gets going, and made numerous good plays going into the gaps last year.

But the big thing that occurred during 2021 was a swing change that Sahadev Sharma brilliantly outlined last winter at The Athletic. The Cubs have been careful to keep some of the specifics under the hood, but you can see the obvious parts here, as hes lowered his hands and simplified their pre-swing movement, and his bat path is now among the flattest in the entire organization:

With those swing changes in hand, Velzquez was near-instantly able to access the raw power hed hinted at for half-a-decade. In 202 games since the start of the 2021 season (High-A, Double-A, AFL, PRWL, Caribbean Series, Triple-A), Velzquez has hit 43 home runs (and 45 doubles-plus-triples). His max exit velocities were the best in the farm system last year.

There are few players Ive ever tracked in professional baseball that run more hot and cold than Velzquez does; its something that many in the organization Ive spoken with point out. While hes much more thoughtful about his plate approach in the past (and his rising BB% over the years tells you that), Velzquez is still somebody who sometimes sees beach balls at the plate, and sometimes sees marbles.

The question for Velzquezs viability in the Major Leagues is pretty much the same calculus as it is for Patrick Wisdom. Hell walk a little more than Wisdom, probably, and I think youd have to guess the HR/PA rate is at least a little lower. But, like Wisdom, so much is going to come down to whether the strikeout rate is closer to thirty than forty. That difference just might be the entire key.

Like with Christopher Morel, my expectation is that well just see Velzquez in Chicago for a short time. But, like with Morel, perhaps he can play his way into David Ross heart and future plans. He certainly has the raw skills to do so.

10 things we learned about the Cubs in May – Chicago Cubs News – Marquee Sports Network

Posted: at 8:08 pm

For a little while, it looked as if the Cubs might be able to follow the 2021 script and turn in a big month of May.

Last season, David Ross squad got out to an 11-15 start in April before getting hot in May (19-8) and shooting into first place to begin June.

In 2022, the Cubs were hoping to follow up an 8-13 April with another strong May but it didnt quite play out that way.

After a 5-game losing streak early in the month, the Cubs won back-to-back-to-back series and went 6-2 in a stretch before finishing the month 2-5.

Things dont get any easier in June, as the Cubs have to play 6 games in the first 5 days of the month against the top two teams in the NL Central (Brewers, Cardinals).

Here are 10 things we learned about the 2022 Cubs in May:

Midway through May, the Cubs were in a tight roster crunch and needed another position player in the big leagues.

So they promoted Christopher Morel from Double-A Tennessee. Morel was already on the 40-man roster but had only played 10 games above the Double-A level and didnt have the same hype as some of the other prospects in the Cubs system.

MLB.com ranked Morel as the teams 21st overall prospect and Lance Brozdowski ranked him 14th.

All Morel has done since his call-up is get on base in every game of his MLB career, setting a franchise record in the process.

His walk Tuesday to break the record was indicative of his impact early in his career Morel got down in the count 0-2 but battled back to lay off 4 straight pitches. Then when he was on base, he forced an errant pickoff throw that led to a run.

On top of all that hes done offensively, Morel has also swiped 5 bases and can play all over the field with starts at second base, center field, third base and shortstop so far in the big leagues.

Versatility is a bonus in our game and helps with roster construction and some of the things you look at when youre building a team, Ross said. Love him in center, love him at second. If hes on the field, hes a spark for us right now and Ill continue to take him where we can get him and try to fit the most offense possible in the lineup.

And Morel has done all this with a joyful exuberance:

He doesnt turn 23 until June 24. Two weeks is a small sample size, but at the very least, Morel looks like he could be a utility player for the Cubs long-term.

Here is the list of players who made their MLB debuts with the Cubs in May:

Christopher MorelBrandon HughesNelson VelzquezMatt SwarmerAnderson Espinoza

That list figures to grow as the season wears on, with top pitching prospect Caleb Kilian knocking at the door and Brennen Davis just one call away at Iowa.

The young pitching has been particularly impressive for the organization over the last two seasons.

After a sparkling April, Keegan Thompson threw well again in May (2.31 ERA) and made 3 solid spot starts.

Scott Effross has established himself as one of Ross most trusted options in the bullpen.

Justin Steele has had his moments in the rotation while Hughes, Swarmer and Espinoza impressed during their first foray into the majors.

The Cubs have also stuck with Nico Hoerner at shortstop to see what he can do at the position long-term, moving veteran Andrelton Simmons to second base when Hoerner returned from the IL last week.

The Cubs will begin June with an injured list that consists of:

1. Seiya Suzuki2. Yan Gomes3. Jonathan Villar4. Michael Hermosillo5. Jason Heyward6. David Bote7. Adbert Alzolay8. Wade Miley9. Alec Mills10. Codi Heuer11. Sean Newcomb12. Ethan Roberts13. Michael Rucker14. Brad Wieck

Bote, Alzolay, Mills, Heuer, Roberts and Wieck are all on the 60-day IL. Bote and Mills are currently rehabbing and eligible to return next week and Alzolay is meeting with the team soon to determine a throwing program.

On top of that, Drew Smyly is currently in limbo after leaving Mondays start with oblique soreness.

It has been a crazy couple weeks for us, said Nick Madrigal, who just returned from the IL Tuesday after three weeks on the shelf.

Its been a tough stretch for the Cubs and their depth has certainly been tested but with that has come with some silver linings, too.

As much as the bad news feels like its coming a lot lately, theres also a lot of energy from the young guys, Ross said. Swarmer threw phenomenal yesterday. When these guys get to put themselves on the map and continue to look at some pieces, its not a bad thing.

Ross also confirmed Tuesday that Swarmer will remain in the big leagues and make another start.

Speaking of the rotation

As Jed Hoyers front office set about addressing the pitching plan for the season, a big part of that picture was the rotation. The Cubs signed Marcus Stroman to a 3-year deal, claimed Wade Miley off waivers and inked Drew Smyly to a 1-year deal.

That trio of veterans combined with Kyle Hendricks and Steele to form the projected rotationbut that group has only been together twice through the order so far this season.

The healthy rotation coincided with the Cubs best stretch of the season in the middle of May as the starters turned in the NLs best ERA (2.68) in a 10-game span.

Miley is back on the IL this time with a shoulder injury and Smylys status is unknown.

But Stroman is coming off his best start of the year, Thompson has looked good in the rotation and Swarmer earned himself another outing.

This roster isnt made up of a bunch of speedsters and the Cubs stole only 4 bases in April.

But May has been a completely different story.

No team in baseball had more swipes (30) than the Cubs in the month.

That included 2 more stolen bases in Tuesday nights contest, which marked the 11th straight game with a steal the first time a Cubs team has done that since April 1989.

Morel (5 stolen bases) has helped bump up that total a bit, but otherwise its the same roster as April.

So why the change?

A big part of it is Ross and his coaching staff trying to instill aggressiveness on the basepaths in the right way.

When we identify opportunities, areas where we can maybe exploit something here or there, we try to do that, Ross said. I feel like weve done a really nice job as of late, guys have learned when to take those opportunities. I wounldnt say the first two weeks of the season was our greatest baserunning moments and we had some learning opportunities in that. We talked about that and guys are growing.

Thats part of the season and us continuing to know what were looking for and how to take advantage of it. I would say the baseball IQ of the players and their instincts are starting to pick up and play right now and doing a really nice job of putting ourselves with runners in scoring position late in games and giving ourselves a chance to if we come up with the big hit to be able to tie or take the lead.

Ross also conceded that this is a Cubs lineup that hits the ball on the ground a lot, so it is a conscious effort to get runners in motion and try to put pressure on the opposing defense.

Trade rumors will continue to swirl around Contreras but for now, he looks like the Cubs best bet to head to L.A. for the 2022 All-Star Game.

Contreras got the nod behind home plate for the Midsummer Classic in both 2018-19 and looks poised to repeat this year.

The Cubs catcher had a huge May, hitting 6 homers and driving in 11 runs while slashing .290/.426/.592 (1.018 OPS). That included a homer and an RBI double Tuesday night to close out the month.

When Willy goes, we go, Steele said. When he has a big game, home runs, hitting the ball well, seeing the ball well, I feel like the whole team feeds off the energy and everybody goes at the same time.

Contreras has been the best offensive catcher in the game in 2022 pacing the position in OPS, on-base percentage and runs scored and ranks 2nd in WAR.

One of the main takeaways from April was Suzukis incredible start and how he looked like a budding star.

May was a different story, as he struck out 26 times in 79 plate appearances over the month and will start June on the IL with a sprained finger.

Suzuki batted .211/.279/.338 (.617 OPS) in May. With regards to the strikeouts, he has been the victim of some bad luck with quite a few balls out of the zone called strikes.

That has led to a high amount of strikeouts looking but Suzuki doesnt want to get away from who he is and what he does best when he returns from the injury.

I did give that some thought but I always want to make sure I dont swing at pitches out of the zone, Suzuki said. Obviously it hasnt been a really good way for me recently but hopefully I can get over this hump and start hitting.

Obviously you see in games, a lot of the balls are called strikes on me. I dont want to change my strike zone. Just keep on adjusting.

The Cubs third baseman homered in 4 straight games in May, becoming the first Cubs player to do so since Anthony Rizzo in 2015.

Wisdom punctuated the month with a blast to Waveland Tuesday night, an 8th-inning homer that lifted the Cubs to victory.

He enters June with a team-leading 11 homers and is tied with Ian Happ for the most RBI (26) on the Cubs.

It has been exactly 53 weeks since the Cubs first promoted Wisdom to the big leagues last season and in that time, he has mashed 39 homers and accrued 3.0 WAR.

Maybe a trip to the Home Run Derby is next for Wisdom?

Tuesday nights victory improved the Cubs record in 1-run games to 5-13 this season.

So nearly half of the teams losses in 2022 have been of the 1-run variety which Ross takes as a good sign and hopes Tuesday could be an inflection point for the Cubs.

The fact that were in a lot of the 1-run games tells you the teams good enough to compete with the best, Ross said. Thats a really good team over there and weve been in a lot of 1-run games with them and a lot of teams around the league.

You gotta make things happen. You gotta push over the hump. Youve gotta have some things go right for you and you also gotta fight, which I think this group has. Theyve proven that. Big swing tonight puts us ahead.

Obviously a big win with some tough losses the last 3 games. It hasnt been for lack of effort. We need to get over that hump. Weve just gotta figure out a way to win. These guys did tonight.

As May turns to June and the trade deadline comes closer into focus, Hoyer will continue to be asked how he plans to approach the deadline and prioritize the future while trying to still help the current team win right now.

There are going to be moments in time you have to make a decision, Hoyer said last weekend. Sometimes the current and the future are in conflict. Whether its trading prospects to get a now player. Whether its doing a really long deal on a free agent. When those things are in conflict, we are going to look towards the future.

Our goal is to build something really special just like it was last time and I think sometimes to do that, you have to take a long view. Do we want to compete right now? Absolutely. When the decisions avail themselves, do we want to make decisions that help this team right now? Absolutely.

I believe going back to 12, 13, 14, taking a long view is really important. The way our game is set up, you are forced often times to decide: Is this a move I want to make right now that is going to have a negative impact on our future? When those have come up, Ive leaned strongly towards the future and I feel strongly about that.

Hoyer also draws on his experiences from other organizations, like when he was the GM of the San Diego Padres in 2010.

We had a team in 2010 that everybody thought was gonna be a last place team, Hoyer said. And that team came together and everything clicked and we won 90 games. We got knocked out the last day of the season.

Thats gonna happen every several years. Everyone that wins a division title isnt projected to win 93 games.

He is hoping the 2022 Cubs could take a similar path.

Were trying to put together a team that has the pitching, has the pieces together that if everything goes right, can compete, Hoyer said. I think that is and was the goal. But being aware that I believe we have an incredibly bright future and were not gonna make moves that are gonna hurt that future that we want to build.

Unitary Republic of Bir Tawil – MicroWiki

Posted: at 8:06 pm

Bir Tawil, officialy the Unitary Republic of Bir Tawil or the Unitary Republic of Bi'r Tawl, is a nation in between Egypt and Sudan. It was founded on 27 January 2022. The Unitary Republic of Bir Tawil is an unrecognized self-declared state. The Bir Tawil region was previously left unclaimed. The reason the Bi'r Tawl region is unclaimed is due to both Egypt and Sudan claiming the Hala'ib Triangle, and claiming the Bir Tawil Triangle would negate their claim on the 'more valuable' Hala'ib Triangle. Bir Tawil attempts to stay neutral on the Hala'ib triangle dispute.

The Unitary Republic of Bir Tawil is a republic with elections every three years. Every three years the citizens vote for a Minister and a Vice-Minister. Also, every three years the citizens vote for the council members. There are nine roles in the council specializing in certain fields.

The name Bir Tawil (Arabic: , Romanized: Br awl) means tall water well in English. The Unitary Republic area of the name, shows our form of republic, a unitary republic.

Bir Tawil declared independence on 27 January 2022, however, Bir Tawil formed its government on 26 January and wrote its constitution on 28 January. On 27 January NURP (National Unitary Republican Party) was founded and was elected as the major party in the ministerial vote. Then on 2/3/22 the DSPBT (Democratic Socialist Party of Bir Tawil) was approved and formed. Bir Tawil's second Councillor was voted in unanimously after the DSPBT's formation. On March 10, 2022 a civil war was started by the Tawilian United Front. The Tawilian United Front (War) was started due to the election for Chief Councillor, the DSPBT and the CDLP lost the election and formed a rogue political movement and started a revolution that slowly is gaining support. On March 12 2022 the Russian Federation invaded Ukraine. This brought the nation to shock. The Minister stated this has brought our nation to shock. The Russian Federation will pay for their actions in Ukraine. Our nation will not stand with this threat to democracy, Slava Ukraini! After this invasion, Bir Tawil issued special postage stamps to support Ukraine and Democracy.

Bir Tawil's Ministry consists of a Minister and Vice-Minister which act as executives. The Minister's Job is to keep the laws constitutional and purposeful. The Minister also tends to the economy and makes sure the civilians are happy, healthy and makes sure they are safe. The Vice-Minister's job is to advise the Minister and keep the Council in check. The council is formed with eight Councillors and one Chief Councillor. Each Councillor has a special area of politics to make sure its needs are attended too. There are nine roles in the council:

Bir Tawil is a disarmed nation without active armed forces; however, Bir Tawil does have a border protection. The Bureau of Border Protection is split into three subdivisions, the Bir Tawil Border Security makes sure the nation is safe and protected from foreign invaders or external terroristic-like threats. The Customs and Border Protection Agency makes sure that foreign threats do not enter the nation. The Bir Tawil Domestic Threats Agency makes sure there are not threats inside Bir Tawil's borders.

Bir Tawil has no relations with any other nation of any sorts but is a member of a faction started and run by itself, named IUDSS (International United Democratic Sovereign States). The IUDSS has an election for the leading states every year (assuming there is more than a single state in the IUDSS). To get into the IUDSS the state must be:

1. Democratic 2. Have More than a one major political party3. Fill out an application to join the IUDSS where more requirements are stated (applications are not available for anything other than in person handouts as of now)

Bir Tawil is a small area located in the Sahara Desert. Bir Tawil consists of mostly sand and sandstone. The highest point is known as Jabal Tawil. The area is not claimed by either Egypt or Sudan making it unclaimed or, in other words "terra nullius".

Masafer Yatta – Wikipedia

Posted: at 8:06 pm

Local Development Committee in Hebron, State of Palestine

Masafer Yatta (Arabic: , also spelled Mosfaret Yatta) is a collection of 19 Palestinian hamlets in the Hebron Governorate of the southern West Bank located between 14 and 24kilometers south of the city of Hebron in the southern Hebron Hills. They are situated within the municipal boundary of Yatta. The name "Masafer" is believed to derive from the Arabic words for "traveling," in light of the distance needed to travel from Yatta, or "nothing" in light of the local belief that "nothing" would be able to live in the area.[1]

According to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, six of the localities that make up Masafer Yatta (Mantiqat Shi'b al-Batim, Khirbet Tawil ash-Shih, Khirbet al-Fakhit, Khirbet Bir al-Idd, Khirbet Asafi and Maghayir al-Abeed) had a population of 768 in 2007. Nearby at-Tuwani serves as a center for the Bedouin localities of Masafer Yatta.[2] Masafer Yatta is administered by a local development committee whose members are appointed by the Ministry of Local Affairs of the Palestinian National Authority.[1]

In 1881, the Palestine Exploration Fund (PEF) noted the following places: Shb el Butm, meaning "the spur of the terebinth",[3] Tuweil esh Shh, meaning "the peak or ridge of Artemisia",[3]Kh. el Fekht, meaning "the ruin of the fissure",[4] andKh. Br el 'Edd, meaning "the ruin of the perennial well".[5]

At Kh. Br el 'Edd PEF noted "traces of ruins, and a cistern",[6]while at Kh. el Fekht, they noted "traces of ruins, and a cave."[6]

Since the Six-Day War in 1967, Masafer Yatta has been under Israeli occupation.

The hamlet cluster is part of "Area C", meaning that Israel has full military and civil control over it.[1] The area is used by the army for military training and was denominated Firing Zone 918 by the Israeli army, after, according to aad cabinet minute of 1981, Ariel Sharon had explicitly stated that the purpose of such a redefinition would be to enable the expulsion of the local Palestinian residents.[7] More than one thousand Palestinians risk to be expelled from their homes and properties.[8]

Bir el-Eid, which is closest to the Israeli outpost Mitzpeh Yair, report having their cistern vandalized by having an animal carcass thrown into it. Palestinians claim that "the Israeli settlers were believed to be behind the vandalism".[9]

The Israeli authorities have been attempting to force the residents to relocate to Yatta, arguing that hamlets in this area only sprung up in the 1980s, when people from Yatta 'invaded' it after Israel's decision to declare it an IDF firing zone. The villagers appealed to the Israeli Supreme Court on the grounds that they have evidence of living in the area before the Israeli occupation. Their appeal is based on the fact that during the Israeli assault on Samu nearby, in 1966, the villagers of Jinba suffered damage, - the UN documented shortly after 15 houses that had been blown up by Israeli forces-and the damage was formally recognized soon after by the Jordanese government, which paid residents compensation for their losses in April and May 1967: 350dinars per each stone house destroyed; 100dinars for every killed camel, and seven for each sheep. It is argued to the contrary that what was blown up were Bedouin tents. Yet the Israeli geographer Natan Shalem, in his book Midbar Yehuda (Judean Desert) in 1931, stated that several villages there were not Bedouin nomadic encampments. Other evidence attests to the existence of inhabited sites outside Yatta-Jinba, Markaz, Al-Mafkara, Fakhit, Thaban, Al-Majaz, Sarura, Simra, Mughayer Al-Abid, Halawa, Sfei, Rakiz, Tuba, and Khalet a-Daba long before the occupation.[10]

In May 2022, the Israeli Supreme Court endorsed the IDF position regarding an area of 3,000 hectares in which 12 Palestinian villages are sited, paving the way for the expulsion of 1,000 residents, which would be the largest deportation since the 1970s.[7] One of the judges involved in the ruling, David Mintz, resides in the Israeli settlement of Dolev in the West Bank.[7] On 10 May, The European Union[11] said "Settlement expansion, demolitions, and evictions are illegal under international law," and that setting up a firing zone is not an imperative military reason for transfer of an occupied population.[12]

In September 2021, a mob of approximately 80 to 100 masked Israeli settlers invaded the village of Khirbat al-Mufkara, one of the hamlets that compose Masafer Yatta, throwing stones at houses and damaging cars; 12 Palestinians were injured, including a three-year-old Palestinian child who was hit in the head when an Israeli settler threw a stone at him while he was asleep inside his home.[13][14]

Foreign Minister Yair Lapid reacted by calling it a "violent incident", "horrific, and it is terror. This isnt the Israeli way, and it isnt the Jewish way. This is a violent and dangerous fringe, and we have a responsibility to bring them to justice."[14]
