Futuristic Belgian F2000 Rifles Have Been Spotted In Ukrainian Hands – The War Zone
Posted: May 28, 2022 at 8:32 pm
Photos have surfaced online reportedly showing F2000 assault rifles in the hands of Ukrainian armed forces. The photos also serve as yet another example of a somewhat rare small arm being put to use on the Ukrainian battlefield.
The two photos in question, both posted to Twitter, dont offer much context in terms of the details surrounding the F2000 delivery. In one photo, a Ukrainian soldier in a nondescript uniform and location reclines alone with the weapon in hand. In the other image, three Ukrainian soldiers are photographed in varying uniforms holding the polymer-clad rifles while standing in front of a pick-up truck. There are few common denominators shared between the photos, with the F2000 being one of them.
Belgian company FN Herstal is the manufacturer of the F2000, which was produced by the company to address a need for a modern and modular assault rifle and was first debuted in 2001. The weapon features a compact bullpup layout, which means that the action and the chamber are located behind the trigger parallel to the shooters face as opposed to in front of it, as is with most modern military rifle designs. This not only reduces the length of the rifle, but it makes it an ideal rifle choice for ambidextrous shooters.
The F2000 can also be tailored with various additions to better fit the intended mission. An M303 underbarrel module could be fitted to fire tear gas canisters for peace-keeping operations, or the rifle could be equipped with 40mm FN EGLM grenade launchers and a proprietary computerized fire control system for more lethality. Although, none of these add-ons can be seen on the rifles in the photos.
It should also be noted that the rifles appear to be F2000 models in their original configurations. More recent iterations of the weapon designed for customers like Slovenia possess visibly different characteristics, which could further support the claim that Belgium is the supplier of the F2000s in question. The rifles were used to an extent in Poland and Spain, as well, serving as additional potential sources for the delivery. The remaining known buyers of the F2000s are in the Middle East and Asia, which are not known to be among the countries that have donated weapons to supplement Ukrainian forces.
In the tweet posted by Ukraine Weapons Tracker, which is a Twitter account run by individuals that track publicly available information regarding weapons and other equipment used in the conflict, it is mentioned that Ukraine has received 10,000 rifles from Belgium, including SCAR-L and FNC. Although, it is unclear whether or not F2000 assault rifles were included in that donation.
While it is confirmed that Belgium has donated 5,000 FNC-type assault rifles, 200 anti-tank weapons, and 3,800 tons of fuel to the Ukrainian government, there has been no official mention of SCAR-L deliveries much less an F2000 shipment. However, both SCAR-L and F2000 rifles have been photographed on Ukrainian soil and shared on social media.
The FNC-type assault rifles that are confirmed by the Belgian Ministry of Defense to have been donated are also designed by FN Herstal, which could further support the claim that Belgium had a hand in the sudden appearance of the F2000s on Ukrainian battlefields. These weapons are in the process of being gradually replaced by the FN SCAR-L, making it a logical choice to send to Ukraine as Belgiums capability will not be hindered by the depletion of the stock.
Despite the quantity and means of delivery being up in the air, the sudden appearance of the F2000 rifles does underscore a strange sourcing trend that has become somewhat of a common occurrence. Prior to the conflict, members of Ukraine's volunteer territorial defense forces were seen using a varied array of guns that individuals had sourced themselves. This odd development was brought on in response to a straightforward need for small arms.
As volunteers flooded into Ukraine, and as Ukraine's militia ranks ballooned, the demand for rifles quickly began to outpace the supply. Thus, the guns sent over in foreign aid packages, like that of the FNC-type assault rifles mentioned earlier, have predictably begun to appear in these volunteer units. It will be interesting to see if the F2000s meet the same fate.
Ukraine's armed forces are already strong proponents of polymer-covered bullpup designs. They make their own rifle called the Malyuk which is popular among Ukrainian special operations forces and they also build a version of Israel's Tavor called the Fort-221 under license. You can read about both of those rifles in Ukrainian service here.
Needless to say, domestically supplied weapons are becoming harder to come by as the conflict rages on, reserves diminish, and demand increases. Otherwise rare, smaller arms are becoming less and less surprising to see on battleground, with Polands Grot C16A2 assault rifles having also made an appearance, for example.
There are also rumors of privately funded weapons buys occurring to equip volunteer forces.
While Ukrainian forces are surely making do with what they have, the sources through which they have acquired many of their weapons arent always clear. But that doesnt seem to matter to the Ukrainian volunteers and militia members in need of small arms, and likely wont anytime soon.

When looked at closely, the concept Asahi Kasei AKXY2 can be seen featuring a split body with a streamlined lower section and an upper glass canopy.
By : HT Auto Desk |Updated on: 26 May 2022, 03:55 PM
To mark its its centennial, Japans Asahi Kasei has unveiled the AKXY2 concept pod vehicle. The vehicle has been designed to reimagine values of sustainability, satisfaction and society and how these will influence the needs of future mobility on the road to automation and electrification. The new concept and futuristic pod shares some visual similarities with the Wienermobile.
When looked at closely, the concept AKXY2 can be seen featuring a split body with a streamlined lower section and an upper glass canopy. The latter can be lifted up vertically, while a door folds down to provide access to the cabin. The exterior of the vehicle features slender lighting units and aerodynamic wheel covers with transparent inserts. The model rides on S-SBR tyres, which are made from a bio-based butadiene and have a low rolling resistance.
(Also read | Mercedes-AMG introduces all-electric Vision AMG concept car)
The cabin also has a futuristic design language, featuring an ottoman as well as two individual seats with Cubit cushioning. It features a 3D mesh material made of PET and partially bio-based PTT. Other interior surroundings have Dinamica microfiber upholstery; there's a small wooden table, and a minimalist information display.
The model lacks a steering wheel and pedals, and one can safely assume that the concept is envisioned to be fully autonomous. The technology features on the vehicle extend beyond the driving system. The concept vehicle has been equipped with the company's Healthy Car Portfolio of products. Among the features, there are antimicrobial fabrics and a CO2 sensor that works to ensure optimal air quality."
The AKXY2 concept showcases the Japanese automaker's expertise as a trusted partner to OEMs and Tier-1s for both interior and exterior components and technology, said Asahi Kasei, America's Director of North American Mobility, Mike Franchy. He added that the company has come a long way in the past 100 years and he's looking forward to seeing these contributions continue to shape the automotive industry."

Astronaut Says the Ukraine War Is So Brutal He Could See It From Space – Futurism

Talk about shock and awe.War From Space
Russian forces are continuing their all-out assault on Ukraine a catastrophic and needless humanitarian crisis that isn't likely to end any time soon.
The extensive shelling of several Ukrainian cities has been so severe,in fact, that the invasion can literally be seen from space, in a shocking reminder of the devastating scale of the ongoing war.
"When you're in space, you feel so far away at first," European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Matthias Maurer, who recently completed his 177 day stint on board the space station, told German broadcaster ARD.
The invasion "was clearly visible to the naked eye from space," he recalled, adding that he could spot "huge black columns of smoke over cities like Mariupol," a port city that has been leveled by Russian forces.
Maurer recalls spotting the earliest signs of the conflict from the ISS.
"At the beginning of the war, the whole country went dark at night," he told ARD.
"People actually only recognized Kyiv," he added. "Then you could also see the impacts in the first days of the war. In Kyiv, you could see lightning at night," even when individual rockets made impact with their targets.
Despite Russia's ongoing presence on the International Space Station, Maurer argued that that all crew members agreed pretty quickly on the fact that "terrible things are happening in Ukraine."
It's hard to get a full grasp of what it must be like, cohabitating with Russian forces within the tight confines of the space station.
But according to other first hand accounts, things have remained civilized and peaceful so far, with the only notable difference being the occasional awkward conversation.
War, unsurprisingly,is hard to watch unfold, evenfrom hundreds of miles above the Earth.
"War seen from above is a hundred times more irrational than from the ground," Maurer told ARD. "Why don't we humans stick together?"

Forget vacuums! Dyson is developing futuristic robots that will live in your home – Express
Posted: at 8:32 pm
It might not be too long until robots are whizzing around your home picking up mess and doing the daily dishes. Dyson has just announced that it's investing heavily in this futuristic technology with plans to create a new robotics centre at Hullavington Airfield in Wiltshire plus a huge recruitment drive which will see almost 1,000 new staff being employed over the next five years.
This new breed of bots could help consumers with those tedious everyday chores such as cleaning, tidying and unpacking the dishwasher. To show the firm is serious about its plans it has released a video showing some of its upcoming inventions including a robot that vacuums the sofa and a hand that's capable of picking up objects without damaging them.
There's no word just yet on exactly what Dyson has planned for the homes of the future or when they will arrive in your kitchen the company is clearly serious about its ambitions.
This latest robotics makeover is the next stage in Dysons 2.75bn investment plan in new technologies, products and facilities; 600m of which is to be spent this year.
Speaking about the new venture, Jake Dyson, Chief Engineer at Dyson, said: Dyson employed its first roboticist 20 years ago and this year alone we are seeking 250 more experts for our team. This is a big bet on future robotic technology that will drive research across the whole of Dyson, in areas including mechanical engineering, vision systems, machine learning and energy storage. We need the very best people in the world to come and join us now.
Of course, it's not just about robotics with Dyson also about to launch its new Zone headphones.
These music-makers not only belt out your favourite playlists but also clean the air you are about to breathe in.
Fans and filters in each earcup suck in the polluted air around you with things then purified before being blown into your noise and mouth via a face shield.
They may look pretty whacky but with the latest figures from the World Health Organisation suggesting that billions of us are constantly breathing in highly polluted air, the famous vacuum might just be onto something.

Jason Silva, futurist and host of National Geographics Brain Games, recently published a mind-bending YouTube video combining the technological prowess of AI with the artistic creativity of someone who believes in the power of psychoactive experiences.
Its called Dreaming while awake: a journey into ourselves. The description on Silvas YouTube channel describes the video as:
The first art piece of the singularity: born from a human-AI collaboration by Jason Silva, Hueman Instrument and digital intelligence.
Personally, Id describe it as a surrealistic experience that seems equal parts Ted Talk and Burning Man. And, Id add, it makes me want to eat a bunch of psychedelic mushrooms and think about the future.
Subscribe now for a weekly recap of our favorite AI stories
Take a look:
The video comes to us from Silvas Shots of Awe channel which features inspirational videos. Most touch upon the human condition and how what we create ultimately shapes who we are.
Silvas bent, in general, seems to be that our brightest future will come from a dedication to developing human-centered technologies.
In the above video, Silva spends six minutes riffing on the nature of being human. At one point, he explains that were both gods and worms, creatures able to shape the world around us with the power of deity, yet destined for death regardless.
Its an existential trip (pun intended) into a place where Silvas words exist only for the purpose of inspiration. Its difficult to describe the exact point of the video, except to call it a meditation on perspective and what it means to be human.

A navigation glitch on NASA’s Mars orbiter MAVEN has stalled its science work – Space.com
Posted: at 8:30 pm
A navigation system glitch that struck NASA's MAVEN orbiter at Mars earlier this year has hobbled the spacecraft's ability to conduct science and study the Red Planet's atmosphere.
The MAVEN spacecraft, which has orbited Mars since 2014, went into a protective "safe mode" on Feb. 22 when its vital inertial measurement units "began exhibiting anomalous behavior," NASA officials wrote in a May 18 update. While in safe mode, a spacecraft shuts down all science and awaits instructions from its flight controllers on how to recover.
In the weeks that followed, NASA managed to revive MAVEN from safe mode, but in a limited capacity. The orbiter is in a stable orbit with its primary antenna pointed at Earth to maintain high-rate communications with its flight control team.
"In this configuration, however, MAVEN cannot perform communications relays for other spacecraft on Mars and is performing only limited science observations," NASA officials wrote in the update (opens in new tab). "The mission team began science instrument recovery on April 20." The orbiter normally serves as a communication relay for NASA's Curiosity rover and Perseverance rover on Mars to beam the latest images and research from the Martian surface to Earth.
Related: A brief history of Missions to Mars
MAVEN's inertial measurement unit (IMU) system relies on ring laser gryroscopes, that detect the spaceraft's inertial motion, and four reaction wheels arranged in a four-sided pyramid that can spin independently to position the orbiter in the proper orientation, according to a NASA press kit (opens in new tab). The orbiter is also equipped with two star tracker cameras that can take images of stars and feed them into a stellar detection algorithm to help the spacecraft determine its orientation in space.
NASA officials reported that MAVEN was in safe mode until April 19, when flight controllers switch the spacecraft from its IMUs to the star-tracking system in what is known as "all-stellar mode."
"All MAVEN's science instruments are currently online, but not all of them have been able to take data while the high gain antenna is restricted to pointing toward Earth," NASA officials wrote in the update. "The team is currently working to finish checkouts of 'all stellar' mode to enable the spacecraft to operate in other orientations prior to resuming nominal science and relay operations by the end of the month."
NASA launched the MAVEN mission (its name is short for Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN mission) in November 2013 and arrived at the Red Planet in October 2014. Its mission is to study how Mars lost its surface water to become the dusty red world we see today. Last month, NASA extended the MAVEN mission, which originally cost $671 million, by another three years to allow the orbiter to continue its science work.

See Mars and Jupiter shine super-close in the predawn sky this Memorial Day weekend – Space.com
Posted: at 8:30 pm
You can watch Mars and Jupiter appear to practically high-five each other in the early-morning sky this weekend with the bright planets reaching their closest on Monday (May 29).
Mars and Jupiter will appear only 0.6 degrees apart in the eastern-southeastern sky, in the constellation Pisces, about 45 minutes before dawn local time, according to NASA (opens in new tab). They will get at their closest at 4:57 a.m. EDT (0857 GMT) on Monday, although you can also see them relatively close on Tuesday (May 30). Venus and Saturn will also be visible near the super-close planets.
These close approaches "never fail to impress during observations, particularly when the gas giants are involved," Mitzi Adams, an astronomer and researcher at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, said in the agency statement Thursday (May 26).
Related:The brightest planets in the night sky: How to see them (and when)
Jupiter will be the brighter of the pair, shining at magnitude -2.2, while Mars will be at a still respectable 0.7. (By comparison, the faintest stars usually visible by the human eye are magnitude 6, and the full moon shines at magnitude -12.6. Magnitude is the scale astronomers use to measure an object's brightness in the sky.)
The two planets are appearing so close because they travel on the plane of the solar system, also known as the ecliptic. The moon, sun and major planets appear to therefore pass across the same pathway in Earth's sky, and sometimes produce eclipses when one world passes across another (or the moon moves into our planet's shadow during a lunar eclipse.)
But in reality, as NASA points out, both planets are millions of miles (or kilometers) away from us. Mars will be roughly 136 million miles (219 million km) from Earth, while Jupiter is four times further. By comparison, the Earth-sun distance is 93 million miles (150 km).
See Venus and the moon?
If you take a photograph of Mars and Jupiter let us know! You can send images and comments in to spacephotos@space.com.
Conjunctions are very common in Earth's sky and as summer approaches, you should be able to see as many as five naked-eye planets in the predawn sky all at once: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. (Strong telescopes may also show Uranus and Neptune.)

New Mars study traces erosion history on the Red Planet in search for water – Space.com
Posted: at 8:30 pm
Now we can factor erosion on the Red Planet into our search for life on Mars.
A new study attempts to find periods of more intense erosion on Mars in hopes of understanding when water flowed on the world's surface. Water can carry larger pieces of rock into collisions, breaking the rocks faster, so accelerated erosion might be a signal of watery, and in turn potentially habitable, conditions.
As rock eroded, the resulting dust blew into craters and settled down, providing a potential measurement point to assess erosion on Mars, according to the researchers.
Related: A brief history of Mars missions
The study probed the different types of rocks available on Mars and possible erosion rates. The planet is mainly covered with a fine layer of talcum-like dust, with elements including sodium, potassium, chloride and magnesium. Below the dust is a crust that is mostly made up of volcanic basalt rock, while a largely dormant mantle beneath contains silicon, oxygen, iron, and magnesium.
"Our study determines the timing and rates of sediment erosion and accumulation over Mars' geologic history in a completely novel way, and for the first time quantifies a measure of the erodibility of each of the types of rocks we see on Mars surface," lead author Andrew Gunn, a lecturer in the Monash University school of Earth, atmosphere and environment, said in a university statement (opens in new tab).
"We show that the abundance of sands blown by wind into craters on Mars' surface can be linked to the climate history of the planet, unlocking a new way to understand when in geologic time Mars may have been habitable," Gunn added.
One common proxy for assessing erosion rates is to use "crater counting", or estimating the number of craters on the surface and then assessing their age by how eroded they are. The complication, however, is that rates of erosion may change over time.
The new study used several datasets, including information from the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) that ran aboard the NASA Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) spacecraft that operated at the planet between 1997 and 2006. Scientists also gathered geology maps and climate simulations.
The aim was to estimate erosion through plotting the sedimentary cycle on Mars. Earth's plate tectonics "recycle" the surface, meaning that sediments are often buried over time. Mars, however, has no tectonics and should have a record of accumulations from ancient times to the present day.
Erosion tends to accelerate, the researchers noted, as rocks collide in liquid conditions. This collision process would then produce sediment, but the sediment often needs to be broken down by water before it is light enough for the wind to pick the dust up.
The implication is there was running water involved in the process, the study suggests. "Seeing high rates of accumulation in a certain period of Mars' history indicates that it was much more likely there was active rivers eroding material then," Gunn said.
A study based on the research was published (opens in new tab) in the journal Geology on May 12.

A ‘doorway’ on Mars? How we see things in space that aren’t there – The Conversation
Posted: at 8:30 pm
Enthusiasts lit up social media recently with images of what appeared to be a doorway into a hillside on Mars. Was it, some wondered, evidence that the red planet could be, or have been, inhabited by aliens? The door was imaged by Nasas Curiosity rover on May 7 on the slopes of Mount Sharp, the central massif within Gale crater, where it landed in 2012. Described on one website as a pharaonic tomb door, because of its resemblance to some ancient Egyptian remains, it is in fact only about one foot high.
It is hard to spot on the panoramic image mosaic of the hillside above, but it leaps out at the eye if you see the individual frame where it occurs, seen below. It does look like a doorway until you realise how small it is. And if you boost the contrast in the dark parts of the image, the picture just about reveals a solid rock face at the back of the shadowed interior. So as a gateway into the hollow hills of Mars, it doesnt lead very far.
Nobody with even a little geological experience is likely to mistake the feature as a door. A geologist would note the thin and slightly sloping repeated layers of sandstone making up the whole of the rock face, and would immediately expect that they were looking at the eroded remains of hardened sand dunes. These once covered the stream and lake sediments that Curiosity examined earlier in its gradual climb up through the layers of sedimentary rock making up Mount Sharp.
A geologist would also spot the steep and fairly straight cracks running up the rock face, and recognise these as joints. These are fractures that typically open up when the weight of overlying rock layers is removed by erosion. There is a particularly obvious joint in the left of the door image, but several others can be made out including one that forms the smooth wall that lines up with the left side of the door itself. Theres another joint that forms the right side of the feature.
The whole hillside has been eroded back. The doorway is simply a place where the wind has been able to scour out the poorly consolidated sand and dust from the rock face a little more effectively, in an area bounded by the joints on either side. The base of an overlying bed of sandstone is the door lintel, and the sloping top of a bed of sandstone forms the gentle ramp that leads up to the door.
It doesnt take much searching on the internet to find images taken by Mars rovers that show rock formations that resemble other familiar objects, even though all are implausibly out of place. We should not be surprised that some of the innumerable rocks on Mars have weird shapes, because many have been sandblasted by wind erosion for billions of years.
Apart from doors and bits of hardware ranging from wrecked spaceships and a jet engine to individual items of cutlery, images have also captured pyramids, numerous humanoid heads, dinosaurs, various bones, and even a squirrel. Only a few of these strange objects are real, and those are all junk that humans put there. The others lose their visual distinctiveness if seen at closer range or from a different perspective.
Seeing the familiar even when it isnt there is a phenomenon called pareidolia. This denotes what happens when you see faces in the random pattern of your wallpaper, or peering out from the grain of wooden flooring, or in the clouds. The latter, for example, is whats causing Jupiter to look angry in the image below.
Seemingly mysterious objects dont occur solely on Mars. In December 2021, Chinas Chang'e 4 rover still doing great things on the on the lunar far side more than three years after landing spotted a hut shaped object 80 metres away. It duly trundled towards it, and revealed it to be just a boulder, presumably ejected from a nearby impact crater. Some say it looks like a crouching rabbit, but I doubt anyone is claiming that it was sculpted by aliens.
One of the most famous, and largest, examples of pareidolia is the Horsehead Nebula. This is a vast cosmic cloud of gas and dust, within which whole stellar systems are forming. An image collected in the right part of the spectrum and with an appropriate exposure time shows a shape that most people would recognise as a horses head. Shift wavelengths (which we can do) or look at it from a different direction (which we cant) and the recognisable shape will vanish.
Back on Earth, climbers high on Great Gable, a mountain in Cumbria, UK, often look out for Cat Rock, otherwise known as Sphinx Rock. Seen from below this looks like a sitting cat, and seen side-on it resembles the profile of the Sphinxs head. So far as I know, everyone accepts this as fluke and no one claims it as evidence that aliens have left landscape clues to their visits to Earth. It beats me why people persist in making such claims for flukey rock formations on Mars.
Ultimately, although you can generally believe your eyes, you should be cautious in believing your brains interpretation of what your eyes see.
