WITH POLL | ‘The wife and I no longer go to places that don’t allow open carry’ – Texarkana Gazette
Posted: May 23, 2022 at 11:58 am
TEXARKANA -- The 10 people killed make the May 14 gun attack at an upstate New York supermarket the deadliest mass shooting to date in the U.S.
Yet, it's just one of the reported 209 mass shootings the nation has seen since the beginning of 2022, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

-- -- --
In the five days after 18-year-old Payton Gendron's alleged racist rampage at the Buffalo, New York, grocery, there were nine other mass shooting events in U.S. The Gun Violence Archive reports that those attacks killed 12 people and injured 59 others.
Closer to home, on May 12, one person was killed and four were injured when a gunman opened fire after a graduation ceremony in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Over Easter weekend a month ago, one person was killed and six others were hurt by gunfire at a pasture party north of Daingerfield, Texas.
As gun violence continues to mount across the nation, the Gazette was interested in learning what readers do to stay safe in public places. The responses vary, but there is a theme: being armed.
"I carry a Glock .26 everywhere," Jessie Morris said.
Reader Lewis Branan gave a two-prong plan for protection: "Remain vigilant; be armed. Self-preservation is the first law of nature."
The Second Amendment is a cornerstone of what Chris Loveall does to stay safe.
"Always be aware of my surroundings. I carry a concealed weapon everywhere unless it is prohibited," Loveall wrote. "I try not to frequent those places. Most mass shootings occur in places where guns are not allowed."
Daniel Sparks said while he practices concealed carry, it's not a show of bravado.
"(It's) for my family's protection. You never know what can happen one minute from the next," he wrote. "If I had only one piece of advice for those out there is to be aware of your surroundings. Don't walk with your head hung low and looking at the ground. Be aware."
The lengthiest response came from Tom Rainey, who builds his personal protection plan on being selective.
"The wife and I no longer go to places that don't allow open carry. We have also cut out establishments that are heavy on alcohol consumption. As a concealed handgun carrier, I still recognize guns and alcohol don't mix. Everyone needs to know strangers are strangers. We know nothing about them so why be around them always."
Above all, Rainey recommends that people put themselves in the safest situation possible, "even if it means cutting things out that were safe before."
"This world isn't safe," he said. "Don't be the one who was at the wrong place and wrong time. Your place to be is with your family."

SURVIVING AN ACTIVE SHOOTING SITUATION
Sgt. Kim Weaver of the Texarkana Texas Police Department offers three suggestions on how to survive during an active shooting.
RUN. If you can escape and have an exit, escape and evacuate the premises. After you have exited and are safely away, call 911. Warn others that might try to go into the building if you see someone going that direction.
HIDE. If you can't exit the building and cannot escape, you need to hide. Try to get into a room and secure it, turn off the lights, and stay quiet. Call 911 and silence the ringer on your phone. If you can't get into a room, try to conceal yourself behind an object.
FIGHT. If you can't run or hide, fighting is the last resort if your life is in danger. Commit to what action you are going to take and act with physical aggression in an attempt to incapacitate the shooter.
"Always be aware of your environment and always have an exit plan," Weaver said.

Well said. We must continue to speak out and then vote.

Ho hum. Another mass shooting by a man carrying a legal paramilitary weapon bought legally by the 18-year-old but then modified.
Officials say the motive wasracism, no doubt fed by those in conservative media (Foxs Tucker Carlson included), piggybacking on the fear of a non-existent Critical Race Theory, not satisfied with cancelling history.
More: Our view: Proposed laws open Ohio kids up to hateful ideology, racist conspiracies
These fearmongers, backed by a majority of Republican elected officials, through willful agreement or dead silence, have introduced a new fear tactic: the replacement theory, which implies that minorities are coming to replace us, the whites.
Blacks, whose descendants were brought here as slaves centuries before ourEuropean descendants arrived, and who were counted by our Framers as 3/5 of a person, are here to replace us?
Latinos are coming to take our jobs?
The jobs most of us dont want?
More: Greater Columbus schools lack teacher diversity, and some fear HB 616 could make it worse
Hatred and ignorance have caused Republicans toabandon their principles while also abandoning the Constitution, ignoring Supreme Court nominations and election results, and allowing the misinterpretation of The Second Amendment to destroy so many lives.
They willingly choose to cause fear for two reasons they have nothing positive to offer our country, and because of their own fears fear of Trump, and, mostly, fear that standing up against racism, hate and the NRA will end the cash gravy train that they are riding.

Opinion | The conservative foundation is laid and Alabama is ready to build back better – Alabama Political Reporter
Posted: at 11:58 am
The Alabama Legislatures 2022 regular session ended recently, marking the conclusion of a successful quadrennium that began in 2019. Throughout four regular sessions and numerous special sessions, I am proud to say that my colleagues defended Alabamas conservative values, fought for hardworking Alabamians in every corner of our great state, and took significant steps to strengthen Alabamas future and economy.
In this past session alone, lawmakers helped spearhead $160 million worth of annual tax cuts for Alabama families, small businesses, farmers, and retirees.
Thanks to conservative fiscal management by the legislature in recent years, we were able to deliver these much-needed tax cuts to ease the burden on Alabamians without negatively affecting vital government services, such as law enforcement, infrastructure, and education.
At the same time, weve made historic strides toward expanding affordable, high-speed internet access to all Alabamians, regardless of their zip code. Senate Majority Leader Clay Scofield, R-Guntersville, has been a stalwart leader in this critical effort, and the result has been not only unprecedented investments and public-private partnerships related to broadband expansion, but also innovative, comprehensive planning that will guarantee resources are allocated strategically, efficiently, and as expeditiously as possible.
On that note, innovation has been an overarching theme of this quadrennium for the legislature.
Along with Governor Kay Ivey, her administration, legislative colleagues, and private sector stakeholders, we concluded our work with the Alabama Innovation Commission and put legislation in motion that formed the Alabama Innovation Corporation. I am honored to serve as an ex-officio board member as well vice-chair of the Corporation, and Im thrilled at the progress we have made in a short time at cementing the Yellowhammer State as a burgeoning hub for 21stcentury entrepreneurship and technology.
From electric vehicles and modern automotive manufacturing to the aerospace and defense industry, biomedicine, cutting-edge scientific research, precision agriculture, and landmark developments at the Port of Mobile, the Alabama Legislature has proactively supported the growth of well-paying jobs and greater opportunity in all 67 of our counties.
My colleagues have also been laser-focused at guaranteeing our workforce is able to meet the demands of a 21st century economy. While we still have work to do, this quadrennium fashioned several pieces of legislation that compensate and treat our teachers like the professionals they are while striving to see all our students reach their full potential.
Its certainly notable that Alabama Republicans tackled all of this while not compromising on our values, core beliefs, or way of life.
We took steps to further secure our elections, including a ban on curbside voting and limiting the influence that private funds have on elections in Alabama, ultimately strengthening the integrity of our elections. Even though wed put our election system and processes up to anyone elses nationwide, we can never stop working to make it easy to vote and hard to cheat.
Additionally, Alabama Senate Republicans know that the Second Amendment codifies inalienable rights that we will never allow to be infringed. After years of work, my colleagues and I were elated to pass constitutional carry and the Second Amendment Preservation Act, pushing back on President Joe Bidens radical gun control agenda.
Finally, and most importantly, the Alabama Legislature has been a champion for the most critical right of all the sacred, God-given right to life. With the Supreme Court of the United States potentially on the cusp of overturning the disastrous Roe v. Wade decision, Alabama Republicans this quadrennium have prepared the people of our state for this very moment.
By passing a constitutional amendment declaring Alabama a pro-life state and passing the most pro-life law in the country, we are ready and willing for the State of Alabama to again have the power to protect the unborn. Nothing is more important than being a voice for the voiceless and protecting the most vulnerable among us.
In Fiscal Year 2022, the legislature made a $772 million investment in communities across the state with will impact Alabamians for generations. Lawmakers appropriated the first round of federal dollars from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) in January to assist with challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. It is imminent that we will be tasked with allocating a second round of federal dollars, and I am confident that we will again make fiscally sound investments for the future of all Alabamians
I am proud of the work the Alabama Legislature has accomplished these past four years, but Im also filled with hope for the future of our state knowing that the best is yet to come.

Good wins nomination in battle for 5th District – YourGV.com
Posted: at 11:58 am
U.S. Rep. Bob Good handily defeated a challenge by Charlottesville native Dan Moy for the 5th District Republican nomination Saturday.
The GOP used a convention at Hampden-Sydney University for its selection process to pick a candidate for Novembers election.
Good will now face off with Charlottesville native Josh Throneburg, a Democrat, in a battle for a seat in Congress. Throneburg secured his partys nomination in April after Andy Parker failed to get an appropriate number of signatures needed to appear on a primary ballot.
I want to thank the delegates from across the 5th District who came to Farmville and took on the responsibility of electing their Republican nominee for Congress, Good said in a statement Saturday. I am humbled and honored that they have once again placed their trust in me to fight for their values in Washington.
Good secured his bid for reelection with 84% 1,488 to 271 of Saturdays votes. Among Halifax delegates, the vote was a bit closer at 52 for Good and 23 for Moy, according to the weighed calculations.
I want to congratulate Congressman Bob Good on his victory, Moy, who made a South Boston appearance in March to seek delegates for his campaign, said in a Saturday statement.
Now it is time to unite and focus on keeping the 5th District red, Moy said. I fully endorse him for his reelection and look forward to continuing to build the Republican committee in Charlottesville and support our nominee.
Good is running for his second term in the United States House of Representatives after winning the seat in 2020. He ousted then-U.S. Rep. Denver Riggleman in an unconventional GOP convention held drive-thru style amid the coronavirus pandemic.
While a majority of the sprawling 5th District remains the same and includes all of Halifax County newly redrawn maps added Goods hometown of Lynchburg as well as new counties in the east near Richmond.
Throneburg, who recently appeared at the TJM Community Center in Cluster Springs, said fewer than 2,000 of party faithful turned out for Saturdays convention, representing only 0.02% of the population Virginias 5th-District.
This district has lacked real representation for far too long, Throneburg said in a statement. The reality is that Bob Good failed the people he serves.
Throneburg said the sitting congressman hasnt passed notable legislation and failed to bring federal money to the district he serves.
On the other hand, Good in his Saturday statement after the convention pointed to 31 pieces of legislation hes introduced on issues from lockdowns to the Second Amendment.
From day one, I made serving my constituents a priority Good said. We didnt just wait for people to call us.
Good and his office have also helped more than 2,000 Virginians cut through bureaucratic red tape, his news release stated.
So far, we have helped our constituents recover over $9.5 million that was owed to them from the IRS, VA, Small Business Administration, Social Security and many more federal agencies, Good said.
Throneburg also attacked Goods endless culture wars in his release.
Ive been meeting with voters in this district for more than a year, and what I have heard over and over is that people here arent invested in partisan politics: what they want is a representative in DC who is looking out for them, not a person who is there to serve his own agenda and his own ambition. Thronburg said. Bob Goods two-year record demonstrates that his priorities dont lie with the district.
On the point of politics, Good blames the Democrats control of Washington for skyrocketing prices of gas, groceries and rent.
I believe voters are going to give Republicans a chance to control Congress and stop the Biden agenda in its tracks, Good said. We must rise to that challenge, and do what we say we are going to do.

‘Proof’ We’re Living In A Computer Simulation, According To TikTok And Elon Musk – YourTango
Posted: at 11:57 am
Conspiracy theories are nothing new on TikTok, and another one of them has gone viral, offering alleged proof we are all living in a simulated universe created and controlled by some unknown power we have no ability to grasp.
Many people get excited about this theory because it would mean there is something greater for us to discover beyond the universe we think we know. Others, however, are frightened because it would potentially mean we are all being watched 24/7, (which we already know is partially true considering our phones are listening to us much of the time).
But is it true?
Simulation theory, also known as the simulation hypothesis, is the theory that we're actually all living in a computer-simulated reality meaning the reality we think we think we know is entirely artificial, sort of like the concept behind the 1998 Jim Carrey film "The Truman Show" or Keanu Reeves infamous 1999 classic "The Matrix."
The theory recently caught on renewed fire after TikToker Heidi Wong shared the argument presented by Oxford University professor Nick Bostrom in a 2003 paper titled "Are You Living In A Computer Simulation?"
According to Bostrom, there's a roughly 50/50 chance that we're living in a simulation.
"This paper argues that at least one of the following propositions is true," his abstract begins. "(1) the human species is very likely to go extinct before reaching a posthuman stage; (2) any posthuman civilization is extremely unlikely to run a significant number of simulations of their evolutionary history (or variations thereof); (3) we are almost certainly living in a computer simulation. It follows that the belief that there is a significant chance that we will one day become posthumans who run ancestor-simulations is false, unless we are currently living in a simulation."
The reasoning behind Bostrum's theory is what's known as a trilemma, a complex problem with three potential solutions.
As Anil Ananthaswamy explained in Scientific American, the simulation argument goes like this:
"Bostrom imagined a technologically adept civilization that possesses immense computing power and needs a fraction of that power to simulate new realities with conscious beings in them. Given this scenario ... at least one proposition in the following trilemma must be true: First, humans almost always go extinct before reaching the simulation-savvy stage. Second, even if humans make it to that stage, they are unlikely to be interested in simulating their own ancestral past. And third, the probability that we are living in a simulation is close to one."
Basically, if we believe that some advanced civilization is likely to be capable of creating a simulated reality that is like existence as we know it, chances are good that we are already living in one.
RELATED:According To TikTok, Einstein Thought We're Already Dead And It May Be True
TikTok videos regarding simulation theory have since garnered millions of views. And many of them contain at least somewhat believable theories and raise good questions about whether or not we may be in living in a simulation.
In 2020, astronomer David Kipping of Columbia University offered his own analysis of Bostrom's theory in which he agreed there is about a 50-50 chance we either live in a base reality where no simulations occur, or that we are living in a simulation.
Using a mathematical estimation and prediction method known as Bayesian model averaging, Kipping says "the probability that we are sims is in fact less than 50%."
However, he furthers the original argument by explaining that once humans create a simulation that harbors conscious beings, the chances shift so that "you are only left with the simulation hypothesis."
"The day we invent that technology, it flips the odds from a little bit better than 5050 that we are real to almost certainly we are not real, according to these calculations," Kipping says.
If you take a look at the quality of the video games humans have created over just the past couple of decades, it doesn't seem all that outrageous to believe these characters could someday soon be conscious beings.
Honestly, this does make sense if you think about how realistic video games are getting day by day and all the little glitches you see in the world that are unexplainable would make sense behind this theory, TikToker Nikki Jain says.
When TikTokers refer to glitches in the matrix they are referring to videos and pictures of captured things that are either unexplainable or that seem impossible.
This may mean cars hitting invisible objects, planes staying in one place in the sky, dogs randomly appearing, as referred to in Jains second simulation theory video.
RELATED:Why Some People Think We're Actually Living In The Year 1725
TikToker Scarlett Mills shared a series videos detailing the history of this theory, noting that notable scientific minds like Elon Musk and late physicist Stephen Hawking have spoken about their belief in the plausibility of simulation theory.
During a panel discussion at the 2016 Code Conference, SpaceX founder and Techno King of Tesla Musk stated that "the odds that we are in base reality is one in billions."
"And actually, I mean arguably we should hope that that's true," Musk continues, "because otherwise, if civilization stops advancing, then that may be due to some calamitous event that erases civilization. So maybe we should be hopeful that this is a simulation because otherwise ... either we're going to create simulations that are indistinguishable from reality or civilization will cease to exist. Those are the two options."
In 2021, Wade McKenzie, one of the metal artists behind the monolith that popped up in California back in December of 2020, coined the term "simulization," which he defines on Urban Dictionary under the handle McHiram as "Civilization existing within the realm of a simulated reality."
This label seems apt if used to describe our civilization as Musk refers to it if simulation theory is, indeed, correct.
RELATED:I Created An A.I. Chatbot Modeled After My Deceased Fiance What The News You Read Got Right & Wrong
TikToker Ashley Lanese agrees with Musk's assessment, comparing humans to Sims but asserting that even though the Sims are part of a game, they are able to make their own decisions.
If life is a simulation, then that means to me, that we have more choice, more chance to choose the life that we desire, she says.
According to philosopher David Chalmers, there is certainly a possibility that we're living in a simulation. But that shouldn't change anything.
"If we discovered were in a simulation, that would change some things. We might want to escape the simulation and get beyond it. At the very least, maybe wed want to try and communicate with the simulators," he says in an interview.
"But I think that simulation or no simulation, life is still perfectly meaningful."

Secrets and Lies Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Ghosts of Illyria – Tor.com
Posted: at 11:55 am
Back in 1989, D.C. Fontanawho was the story editor for most of the original series first two seasons, the show-runner for the animated series, the uncredited co-creator of TNG, and who wrote for all those shows as well as one DS9 episode, many of which were excellent and influential episodeswrote a Trek novel called Vulcans Glory. It took place prior to The Cage (and retroactively, shortly after the Short Trek Q & A), and chronicled Spocks first mission on the Enterprise.
It also established that Number One was a genetically engineered human from the colony of Illyria, a backstory that was used in several other works of tie-in fiction (notably 2010s The Children of Kings by David Stern and 2016s Legacies trilogy by David Mack, Greg Cox, and Dayton Ward & Kevin Dilmore).
Said backstory has now been incorporated into the onscreen canon, with an interesting twist
One of my biggest issues with the first two episodes of SNW is the lack of focus on Number One. As I said back when SNW was formally announced as a thing that was happening, Number One is the one member of SNWs big three that is a totally blank slate, as prior to Discovery season two we had no idea what the characters fate was after The Cage.
The fleshing out of Number One had already taken one cue from the novelsthe first name Una, from Legacies, which means one and also a tribute to Trek novelist Una McCormackand this episode gives her the last name of Chin-Riley, and also establishes that shes Illyrian.
But theres one big difference between Trek now and Trek in 1989 when Fontana created that backstory for Number One: it wasnt yet established that the Federation had banned genetic engineering, a rather huge overreaction to the Eugenics Wars (and, out of the box, a reason for the lack of any kind of genetic engineering in a show populated by actors who are from contemporary Earth).
Ghosts of Illyria combines those two notions (and apparently ignores the Illyrians seen in Enterprises Damage) by establishing that Illyrians have been denied Federation membership because they genetically engineer themselves. Number One has kept her Illyrian heritage secret, but is forced to reveal it this week for reasons of plot.
That plot, ironically, involves an Illyrian colony that is on a planet regularly wracked by that original series standby, ion storms! Said colony was wiped out and Pike and the gang beam down during one break in the ion storms in an attempt to find out what happened. However, a stormfront moves in and everyone except Pike and Spock are able to beam backthe latter two are stuck because Spock was in a library reading, which is the most Spock thing ever, and by the time they made it to the beam-out point, the storm was too brutal.
Image: CBS
Unfortunately, the landing party brings a contagion back onto the Enterprise, one that causes people who have it to seek out light, often to the exclusion of common sense. It starts with one ensign shoving his head through glass to get closer to a light source, and ends with Hemmer trying to beam a piece of the planets mantle on board and Laan trying to make the warp core explode.
The key to stopping the contagion is in Numbers Ones genetically engineered immune system, which aggressively wipes out any disease or virus. The problem is, its so aggressive that theres nothing left for MBenga to work with by the time she admits her heritage. But Laans attempted warp-core breach results in radiation flooding engineering (something we also saw happening in The Wrath of Khan) and Number Ones hyper-immune system cures both her and Laan and its sufficiently complicated that her antibodies are still at it long enough for Chapel to get a sample and use it to cure the crew.
This is the third time in the last three weeks that a Secret Hideout Trek show has referenced the Eugenics Wars. There was Adam Soongs Project Khan folder in Picards Farewell and Pike referencing it as part of Earths ramp-up to nuclear armageddon shortly before first contact in Strange New Worlds. And given that its part of the backstory of both Number One and Laan, I suspect it may come up again, and Im wondering if theres an endgame to that
Yes, Laan, too. From the beginning, she was established as having the same family name as Khan Noonien Singh from the original series Space Seed and the movies The Wrath of Khan and Into Darkness. In this episode its established that she is a descendant of that tyrant, and it was a source of merciless teasing when she was a child, and on into adulthood where she was accused of being an Augment, even though she isnt one. (Why she didnt just change her name is left as an exercise for the viewer.)
Upon finding out that Number One is an Illyrian, and while still under the influence of the virus, which makes everyone who gets it more than a little binky-bonkers, Laan says some pretty nasty things to her. After being made fun of for so much of her life, to find out that her mentor is in reality what she was accused of being is a bitter pill to swallow.
Number Ones response is to point out that genetic engineering doesnt have to lead to tyranny. What Illyrians do is adjust themselves to fit their environment betterrather than terraform planets they terraform themselves. They make themselves better, helping the evolutionary process along with less risk.

When Number One comes clean to Pike and offers her resignation, Pike refuses to accept it. When she reminds him that that makes him an accessory to her lying to Starfleet, his glorious response is, I welcome that conversation. Shes the best first officer in the fleet, and she just saved everyones asses. And the implication there is that he agrees with her that the genetic engineering ban is a silly goose. Though Number One does muse in a personal log (that she immediately deletes) that Pikes response might have been different if she hadnt just saved everyones asses, though I think thats not giving the captain enough credit.
Rebecca Romijn is superb in her long-awaited spotlight, as the characters cool confidence and no-nonsense leadership and easy professionalism is leavened nicely by her conflicted impulses with regard to revealing her heritage.
But shes not the only one with a secret, as we find out how the contagion got on board the Enterprise despite there being bio-filters in the transporters: the emergency medical transporter didnt get the same upgrades as the other transporters when the ship was upgraded prior to Strange New Worlds. And the reason why is also a potential explanation for why MBenga has a lower position in the sickbay hierarchy when we see him in the original series A Private Little War and That Which Survives, to wit, hes keeping his sick daughter in the medical transporters buffer. She has an incurable disease, so hes keeping her in the bufferrematerializing her periodically to prevent the pattern degradation that would happen if she spent too long in there, as established in TNGs Relics. Number One not only doesnt punish him for this, she promises to find a way to make it a more stable proposition. Earlier in the episode, Number One hesitated to do everything she could to save lives because of Starfleet regulations, and most of the crew got really sick and almost died. She wont make that hesitation again, and so she more aggressively chooses MBengas daughters life over regs.
The B-plot here is Pike and Spock down on the planet, and not only does it continue to solidify the Pike-Spock dynamic that would lead to Spock breaking dozens of regs to help Pike a decade hence in The Menagerie, but its also a master class by Ethan Peck in continuing the character of Spock. Every line of dialogue is delivered in a manner that is at once very Leonard Nimoy-like, and yet totally Peck as well. (Credit also to screenwriters co-executive producer Akela Cooper and supervising producer Bill Wolkoff for penning very Spock-y dialogue.)
This part of the story is also a poke in the eye to the Federations ban, as Spock learns from his reading that the Illyrians on this colony wanted to join the Federation, and as a good-faith gesture attempted to de-engineer themselves by removing their genetic modifications. It kinda failed, and resulted in them either dying from the same virus that nearly wipes out the Enterprise or turning into energy creatures.

The genetic engineering ban has been a bit of an odd duck since it was established in DS9s Dr. Bashir, I Presume? in 1997. I can see why they thought it would work for that episode and for the character of Julian Bashir in particular, but it doesnt make a lot of sense when you think about it in the larger context of the Trek universe, for the very reasons Number One enumerates to Laan. One wonders if the show is going to continue to challenge that twenty-five-year-old plot point
Points also to giving everyone something to do, even if its minorOrtegas only scene, for example, is discovering that one of the landing party has the virus, while Uhura only has two sceneswithout making it feel like theyre being sledgehammered in. Everyone has a role to play, and it works nicely.
Im still not entirely sold on Hemmer as a character. Hes still not much beyond arrogant genius, a character type that can wear out its welcome pretty quickly without something to ameliorate it. Hemmer hasnt really had much to do yet, and its mostly been the usual Im so brilliant, and Im just humoring the dummies around me stuff. Bruce Horak is playing the part very well, mind you, and the producers seem determined to give everyone a spotlight (Pike two weeks ago, Uhura last week, and Number One this week), so lets hope that Hemmer gets his day in the sun.
Weve also got now three crew members who are defying regulations in a manner that should probably have consequencesNumber One for hiding her heritage, MBenga for hiding his sick daughter, and Pike for not doing anything about either oneand one wonders when those chickens might come home to roost
