Surescripts webinar highlights: Interoperability progress depends on how you look at it – MedCity News

Posted: May 13, 2022 at 3:02 pm

The U.S. healthcare industry has marked several milestones as it pushes towards industry-wide interoperability. But the journey has not been without setbacks. Despite the progress made towards making it easier to share medical records between clinicians at hospitals and health systems, there are still significant gaps that inhibit how to measure and quantify how successful interoperability is around the country.

A webinar, sponsored by Surescripts, sought to highlight the findings of a report commissioned by the Healthcare Leadership Council Opportunities for Private Sector Measures to Inform and Advance Interoperability Policy. The conversation fleshed out progress made on interoperability, recommendations on how best to measure and quantify interoperability, and a near term outlook on next steps. It also addressed the legacy of the HITECH Act provisions and the impact of the 21st Century Cures Act.

Among the panelists are:

Stephanie Baum, Director of Special Projects at MedCity News, is the moderator.

Faulkner recommended a change in how we measure and quantify interoperability from the number of patient records shared to the number of patients for which information is successfully shared. That shift would not only offer a more practical approach to assessing how widespread and effective interoperability is, but could also offer insight into communities and patient populations where interoperability needs improvement.

One talking point sought to contextualize the impact of the HITECH Act and the Meaningful Use requirements contained within it. Although it led to a rapid transformation of paper-based patient medical records to digital, the consensus among panelists is that it also slowed interoperability. Holmgren highlighted some pros and cons of the Meaningful Use provisions of the Act, observing that it led to slower interoperability growth than had been hoped for.

I think if you had looked at the 2008 plan, do you expect in 2022 to be publishing papers that about 50% of hospitals report they regularly exchange data electronically? Im pretty sure that they would say no. Im pretty sure theyd hope to get a lot more broad interoperability and data exchange before that. So in one way, it was wildly successful. Just looking at the state of the U.S. healthcare system compared to other countries, we have digitized our system, which is necessary, but not sufficient. Where weve moved slower is moving that data across different silos.

Grealy, Healthcare Leadership Council President, highlighted the importance of the work of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT in advancing interoperability.

I think the Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement (TEFCA) certainly has really moved us in the right direction. I think we were finding that there were some good regional health information exchanges, but we really needed to ramp that up and expand it. Some of the Carequality and Commonwell initiatives are really important examples of private sector collaboration. I know both Tom and Judy are pretty active with those organizations. I think it really highlights the importance of the private sector stepping in, taking responsibility, trying to drive this change, but we really cant do it without a partner like the office of the Office of the National Coordinator.

Skelton, while highlighting some of the progress Surescripts has made with e-prescribing, also addressed the inherent challenges that interoperability has created. Making sensitive patient data more easily accessible has also increased the need to develop ways to better safeguard the data as well as easily correct that data when there are errors.

The most accurate data in any setting is data that is being used regularly and as a vital part of a workflow. As long as thats happening, then the data tends to get corrected quickly or noticed quickly. If a lot of data is moving around, then its being swept into a closet somewhere online. It could actually end up in a situation where the quality of that data doesnt really get the view it should get, and we could end up in a situation where [it is] proliferated across health systems. And so we do have to be careful about this. They are legitimate risks. Being an optimist, I believe that industry is being exceptionally diligent here and will continue to be, but I do think the risk is real and I think its something we need to recognize and accept.

Faulkner highlighted some of the interoperability efforts undertaken by Epic, including Care Everywhere and, more recently, Share Everywhere for patients who have access to its patient portal MyChart. She also offered a few takeaways from the discussion.

I think we need to celebrate our success, that has really changed the whole country and even the world because of interoperability, theres been a lot thats been accomplished. Secondly, I think we really have to focus on those left behind who cant afford it, and dont have the human power to do it. We have to figure out what we do with those institutions. My daughter was recently injured and had to go to two different hospitals. One had no interoperability and it felt like the light switch was turned off. The other had, and then the light switch got turned on and it was a striking comparison. Third, and this is just for those who use My Chart: learn about Share Everywhere you might have to use it sometime.

Target’s Progress on Investing $2 Billion in Black-owned Businesses – Target Corporate

Posted: at 3:02 pm

Rewind to April 2021: Wed just committed to spending $2 billion with Black-owned businesses by 2025. The goal: create more equitable and welcoming experiences for our Black guests, and use the full impact of our companys size, scale and resources to create economic opportunity for Black-owned businesses here at Target and beyond. We pledged to not only grow the number of Black-owned brands available in our stores and online, but also to spend more with Black-owned suppliers and build new resources for Black entrepreneurs. And we said wed do it while staying transparent about our progress along the way.

Fast forward to today and were on track to meet our goals. Plus, were launching a new media fund initiative through our in-house media company, Roundel. (More on that below.) Compared to 2020, weve increased the amount of money weve spent with Black-owned companies and suppliers by more than 50%, and weve doubled the number of Black-owned brands across our assortment to more than 100. And our support extends beyond getting more Black brands on our shelves: We also launched Forward Founders, Targets new accelerator program designed to help early-stage Black-owned and diverse businesses increase their potential to be the next wave of wealth-building companies.

Heres a closer look at what weve accomplished, plus a peek at whats next:

As we look to the work ahead, were proud to introduce a new initiative to take our efforts even further: the Roundel Media Fund. Designed to offset the cost of marketing programs at Target, the new fund will award more than $25 million in media to Black, Indigenous and people of color (BIPOC) brands by 2025. The Fund will allow businesses to tap into paid media through Roundel at a fraction of the cost while receiving the same benefits and reach as a typical marketing program. Its yet another way were amplifying the reach of Black founders and creators in the media industry, as we work toward our commitment to invest 5% of Targets annual media budget with Black-owned media by the end of 2022.

While were proud of our impact so far, were not done yet. Check out Targets Racial Equity Action and Change page for more on our journey and to track our progress.

Evil Dead The Game review in progress hail to the king, baby – The Loadout

Posted: at 3:02 pm

As a relative late-comer to the Evil Dead fandom, I had a short but very intense period of excitement prior to the release of Saber Interactives asymmetrical action-horror: Evil Dead The Game. Its a game I have been keen to try for a little while, after falling in love with Sam Raimis direction of the movie trilogy and the development of Ash Williams character from mild-mannered college kid to heroic demon-slaying badass, and I am pleased to share that this game does not disappoint.

Evil Dead The Game really is a treat for fans of the Evil Dead franchise as well as being a treat for general fans of the horror genre or asymmetrical multiplayer games. It ticks all the boxes youd expect from a game like this, and then ticks a few more that you didnt know existed. Its clear that this was a game made by fans, for fans, as much as it was made for a wider audience. Its one of the few asymmetrical multiplayer games that has full single-player support too, in the form of a short Evil Dead The Game Missions list and AI-controlled Survivors and Demons.

But, of course, having AI companions is only part and parcel of what makes this a fantastic offering from Saber Interactive. I had the chance to review Evil Dead The Game on PS5 and, although I do have some concerns about certain aspects of the game, I am finding this to be a wholly enjoyable experience that I can see being a firm favourite for some time.

When I first jumped into the game, the first thing that struck me was just how good everything looked. I know Im playing it on a next-gen console, so the graphics were never going to look that bad, but the game is a feast for the eyes beyond its detailed textures and smooth frame rates.

The in-game artwork is truly exceptional

The in-game artwork is truly exceptional. Whether youre trawling through the menus looking at the games impressive array of unlockable skills and upgrades, or deciding which Mission to tackle next, youll find Ash Williams and his buddies beautifully illustrated. The artwork showcases the Survivors using in-game items, battling Deadites, or facing off against a terrifying Kandarian Demon.

Then, when you come to actually playing Evil Dead The Game, youre met with an intensely atmospheric action-horror experience that evokes the emotions brought about by Sam Raimis movies with unexpected accuracy. Its overly graphic, in a campy way, with its intense blood-splattering finishing moves and shotgun blasts that quite-literally blow the face off of the Deadites youre up against. And, more importantly, its isolating, despite the fact that youre playing within a team of four, with its sparsely-lit open spaces and impressive weather effects.

This feeling of isolation is only intensified by the absence of enemies from the games minimap and the interesting Fear system.

When youre running around in the darkness as Ash or one of his buddies you need to keep an eye on your Fear level. This increases whenever youre alone, under attack, or in the darkness adding an important survival game-like aspect to this already action-packed experience. There are ways for you to reduce this level, mainly by standing in the light and taking a breather, but Evil Dead The Game doesnt make that easy.

So, it ultimately feels inevitable that youll max out your Fear level at some point during a game sometimes, you just cant find the Matchsticks you need to start a campfire.

When your Survivor is scared, its like having tunnel vision

If youre unlucky enough to have your Fear level climb above your characters threshold, then youre in for a bad time but also the most exciting time when it comes to playing as a Survivor. When your Survivor is scared, its like having tunnel vision. Your in-game sound and the edge of your screen are both distorted, making it even harder to avoid attacks from the Deadites and Demons around you, and you quickly find yourself frantically running for your life. Like with all horror games, the thrill of the chase is the best part.

Without this mechanic, which might seem like a superficial addition to the game at first, I fear Evil Dead The Game would be more hack-and-slash than horror. It helps to keep you on your toes and forces you to think much more strategically about how you use the limited loot items you have. Healing items and Matchsticks used for lighting fires are few and far between in this game; you dont want to waste what little you have when youre fighting against a Kandarian Demon.

I have spent most of my time playing Evil Dead The Game, so far, as a Survivor. However, I did dip my toes into the horrors of the Necronomicon to play as a Demon a few times and thats a wholly different experience.

You really do feel like youre in a Sam Raimi movie in the best possible way

When youre playing as a Demon, youre primarily orchestrating the Army of Darkness in Spirit Form. The erratic movement controls do take a bit of getting used to compared to controlling a Survivor, but when youre playing in this mode you really do feel like youre in a Sam Raimi movie in the best possible way.

I will say that the lack of sensitivity options, and accessibility options as a whole, are troubling if youre struggling to play, there arent any concessions available. I hope these are features that will be available in the future, but it doesnt quite make sense why theyre not available now.

That being said, once you get your head around the controls, playing as a Demon is a fantastic and much more rewarding experience than other asymmetrical multiplayer games, like Dead By Daylight and Predator Hunting Grounds. Why? Because youre not just playing as one Kandarian Demon, really; youre playing as the whole Army of Darkness.

Boss units are by-far the most exciting way to play as a Demon

Using Infernal Energy, you can possess roaming Deadites and attack the Survivors yourself, summon powerful elite enemies to further disrupt their attempts at banishing you, and even set traps in supply boxes and evil trees (something which always takes you by surprise as a Survivor.)

With enough of this energy, you can even summon a boss unit, which takes the form of whichever Kandarian Demon youre playing as be that Evil Ash, Henrietta, or Eligos. These boss units are by-far the most exciting way to play as a Demon and, in the right hands, make short work of Ash Williams and his friends. With Evil Dead The Game, you get all the fun of playing as a killer in Dead By Daylight and the enjoyment of strategically dismantling your opponents plan of attack with well-placed traps and proximity-based portals (that, of course, spawn more enemies).

Whether youre playing with your friends against the forces of evil, or taking control of those forces of evil yourself, youre in for a fun time with Evil Dead The Game. I havent played enough of it yet to talk about the depth of its upgrade system and the decent variety of weaponry on offer, but my first impressions are that this game could, with the right post-launch support, be around for a long time. Its action-packed, frightening when it needs to be, and full of charm. Of course, the gameplay loop could get repetitive as with any asymmetrical multiplayer game but I dont see that happening for quite some time.

Junior starting pitcher Tyson Staheli went 5 innings allowing 7 runs on 8 hits and striking out 3. Freshman, Tyson Pettingill, had an impressive 3 hits with 2 doubles. Junior, Landon Wresinski, contributed 2 singles while sophomore, Tahj Totten, also had a single in the game.

Now the Seniors:

Gunnar Redd, left fielder, batting .323 on the season, had 2 singles and a walk, scoring 3 runs. Defensively, Redd made 2 impressive outs on fly balls hit to left field.

Austin Heizelbetz, center fielder, batting .357 on the season, hit an RBI triple. He ended the first inning by catching a fly ball hit to centerfield. Heizelbetz also got the save after pitching two innings allowing 1 hit, and striking out one, with no earned runs scored.

Rylan Evans, batting .557 on the season, hit 2 singles and 2 homers, over to left center and another no doubter to left for 5 RBIs. Evans made a vertical jumping catch on a line drive that drew gasps from the Pirate crowd. He also made a double play, assisted by Tyson Staheli and C. Evans to end the sixth.

The Moapa Valley Pirates took a 10-7 win over Boulder City Eagles, securing their spot in the state tournament. The win was a team effort but in their last home game ever, the seniors definitely left their mark in history.

Riley Herbst showing progress with Stewart-Haas: Momentum is everything – NASCAR

Posted: at 3:01 pm

Last season, all eyes were on Riley Herbst as he replaced Chase Briscoe in Stewart-Haas Racings No. 98 Xfinity Series car. The year before, Briscoe won a series-high nine races in that ride.

Out of necessity, Herbsts expectations skyrocketed, despite entering just his second year at the Xfinity level. And theres no sugarcoating it, 2021 was a struggle.

[Everyone] had a bar set for me, obviously, and I knew I wasnt going to hit that bar because Im not Chase Briscoe, Herbst recently told NASCAR.com. Hes in the Cup Series right now and Im in the Xfinity Series.

RELATED: Xfinity Series standings | 2022 schedule

Throughout Herbsts tenure at Stewart-Haas, he hasnt gotten caught up in the comparisons to previous Xfinity drivers in the teams young history. But it took the No. 98 team until the fifth race of 2021 to get its first top-10 finish of the season, with three of the first four races being results of 26th or worse with three DNFs.

The silver lining for the duration of the 2021 season was that Herbst showed flashes of speed. It was something to build on for 2022, his third full-time season in the Xfinity Series.

Sometimes, it beats you down, Herbst said of not getting consistent finishes. But then, you have to step back and think we were at X track and had good speed, we just didnt finish. I either made a mistake or wrecked. Its hard to go off the finishing order because that doesnt show the whole story most of the time.

Momentum is everything. It was tough last year, and we knew that if we did what we were supposed to do, we would finish OK.

Consistency is key, and something Herbst honed in on over the offseason. He entered the 2022 season with a new mentality of solidifying the No. 98 Ford as a weekly top-10 competitor. From there, its slowly been about getting into the top five. It also marked the first time in his racing career that hed have the same crew chief, full time, for the duration of a season in Richard Boswell II.

That familiarity and chemistry with Boswell is an understated part of Herbsts turnaround through the opening 11 races of the 2022 season.

The biggest thing is weve taken the day for what the car is going to give us and what the team is going to give us, Boswell said. If thats a solid seventh place, then its a solid seventh place and weve got a race car thats in one piece and something to work on.

Finishing races was a point of emphasis that Kevin Harvick and his Kevin Harvick Inc. management company helped instill in Herbst, who joined KHI as a client ahead of the 2022 season.

So far, so good.

The main thing with him is just making sure that we finish the races and get the things out of the day that theyre given you, Harvick added. Hes done a good job and [the team has] done exactly that. You have to finish ninth to finish fifth, you have to finish fifth to finish fourth and so on and so forth.

How good has it been? Through 11 races, Herbst already has four top-five finishes, one shy of his 2021 total. With eight top-10 finishes, hes tied with Noah Gragson for the second-most top-10 finishes thus far, only behind AJ Allmendinger who has yet to finish outside the top 10.

Not bad for Herbst, whos in his first Xfinity season with practice and qualifying for each race.

I dont really know what that is, maybe experience, Herbst said. Were way more consistent and being able to finish has been huge for us as a team and allows us to keep moving forward and progressing and ultimately move towards those goals of winning races.

Boswell, a perfectionist, knows the No. 98 team is much improved from 2021. But with just 34 stage points on the season, he says the team can still boost its performance.

Still a ways to go, he said. All of our goals are the same in wanting to win races; we want that for Riley and the guys on our team. But by all means, a big improvement thats attributed to finishing races.

MORE: NASCAR on TV this week

Boswell credits Herbsts improvement to having matured a significant amount over the past year and a half. In communicating with his team, Herbst understands what he needs out of his car more and understands when the No. 98 team is discussing different setups to run.

But dont think Herbst didnt try hard even when the success wasnt on paper.

Hes always worked hard and put his heart and soul into it, Boswell said. I think a lot of times he catches a bad rap because, quite frankly, his family has been successful. It drives me nuts because if people understood how hard he works and how badly he wants to run well then maybe theyd lay off him a little bit.

After a season-best third-place finish at Darlington last weekend, Herbst sits eighth in the championship standings (ninth in the playoff standings), 54 points above the cutline.

While 54 points is a solid margin in a stacked Xfinity field this season, Herbst plans to keep a steady approach as the year progresses, despite having two Kaulig Racing cars, including reigning series champ Daniel Hemric, and a Richard Childress Racing entry behind him in points. Should he get a win before Bristol Motor Speedway in September, hell be all but locked into the postseason.

Were worried about ourselves and progressing as a team, getting closer to our goals of winning races, he said. I think each week were taking a step forward.

It doesnt surprise me. I knew I could have done this last year if we could have achieved what we were supposed to achieve and do the things we were supposed to achieve. But we havent won, so Im not near satisfied. Its cool to finish well each week, and I think we need to keep doing that and not lose sight of the goal and have to keep laying the foundation. But I really want to win a race, and I have to win a race. This is my third full-time year and youve got to start winning some time.

Decades of progress and promises squandered as rights begin to disappear – Reno Gazette Journal

Sheila Leslie| Reno Gazette Journal

This opinion column was submitted byRGJ columnist Sheila Leslie, who served in the Nevada Legislature from 1998 to 2012.

In 1973, I graduated from high school in California and the world seemed full of promise and opportunity. The Vietnam War was winding down and the compulsory draft had just ended. Title IX was being implemented and our girls basketball team would no longer be forced to practice outside in the fog on rough pitted asphalt while the boys used the cozy warm gym. And the Roe v. Wade decision meant women finally had autonomy over their own bodies. After graduation, most of us who grew up together in our one high school town would scatter across the state, choosing between free community colleges and an array of heavily subsidized, high-quality state colleges and universities.

Fast-forward 49 years to so many promises squandered. Our children cant afford to buy a house in a good neighborhood and are drowning in college debt. Our grandchildren are living on a doomed planet thanks to our greed and hubris about climate change. The separation of church and state is quickly disintegrating as politicians and jurists of a primarily white Christian religion push their values and views into politics, deciding for the rest of us if transgender children should have medical care, immigrant children should have education, and women should have full access to contraceptives and abortion.

These days, Republican candidates rail about taking back our country by promising to do even more to force their version of morality onto the rest of us. Theyre celebrating their likely abortion victory by talking about making criminals out of women who cross a state border to seek abortion in a friendlier state or try to access abortion drugs via the mail. Politicians in Mississippi and Louisiana are considering statutes to give constitutional rights to a person from the moment of fertilization, effectively denying women access to emergency contraception or even an IUD.

Some constitutional scholars and activists are warning that marriage equality, LGBTQ+ rightsand interracial marriage will be on the chopping block next and are practically begging us to wake up and smell the coffee as if the repeal of Roe v. Wade were not enough to activate us.

As the country reeled from the leak of the draft opinion by conservative justices last week, it was hard not to yell back at the TV when Chief Justice John Roberts seemed more worried about who leaked the draft opinion than about taking away a fundamental health care right from every woman in the country. He called the leaking of the confidential draft opinion a betrayal, oblivious to the much larger betrayal of denying a woman the right to make a major medical decision with her doctor, in private. Even more outlandish was Justice Clarence Thomas whining about the declining respect for institutions and the rule of law given he and his wifes well-documented unethical behavior, most recently around trying to overturn a valid election and supporting the Jan.6insurrection. Do these justices think were stupid out here beyond the Beltway and cant see what is happening?

Meanwhile, pro-life groups rejoiced in their presumed victory while noting their work would actually be increasing as there will be many unprepared pregnant women who will need help to carry their unwanted babies to term. These groups may be able to provide prenatal vitamins and even medical care during pregnancy, but how likely is it theyll be able to help these women access basic needs after the baby is born, like affordable housing and quality child care or a job with a living wage? If only they were concerned about life after birth instead of being obsessed with the moment of conception.

Nevada owes a big debt of gratitude to the women and men who were behind the brilliant design of Ballot Question 7 in 1990, which confirmed an abortion rights statute with an almost two-thirdsvote. That law can be changed only by another vote of the people and is the primary reason abortion isnt relitigated constantly in our state Legislature.

But after nearly 50years of insisting reproductive rights should be left to the states, the hypocrisy of the Republican Party is now on full display with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnells announcement that a national ban on abortion may be coming if Republicans regain control of Congress. And the same people who protest lifesaving vaccine mandates as a body autonomy issue seem perfectly content to impose abortion bans on women with little or no regard to circumstances such as rape or incest or an individuals right to privacy when it comes to personal medical decisions. And a COVIDvaccine that protects the community at large as well as the individual is hardly the same as a nine-month pregnancy and potential lifetime commitment to a child.

As a young adult in the early '70s, I took so much of the post-'60s progress for granted. Now, 49 years later, I find it horrifying that my granddaughter will likely have fewer rights than women of my generation.

You can refuse to vote and choose to silently stand by while our democracy collapses and our basic rights evaporate. Thats going to happen unless we make sure people like Nevadas U.S. SenatorCatherine Cortez Mastoare elected. Its clear that both of the leading Republicans in the race to replace her will not support a womans right to choose.

Or we can register legions of young women and men who want their rights back and take away the Republicans political power, although even that might not be enough in the short term thanks to the Supreme Court justices theyve managed to seat.

Either way, the country should get ready for tempestuous times ahead.
