Former Hellmuth Rival Eric Persson Talks His Way to Big Wins on New High Stakes Poker – PokerNews.com

Posted: May 6, 2022 at 12:46 am

As we learned in his recent contentious heads-up match against Phil Hellmuth, Eric Persson sure does love to talk and isn't a fan of sleeves. Both seemed to work in his favor during Monday's High Stakes Poker episode much like it did versus the "Poker Brat" last month.

Episode 11 of the ninth season, which is available on the PokerGO app, didn't present many big pots, but there were some entertaining hands and table talk worth mentioning.

The newest episode featured the same players from last week's show: Persson, Tom Dwan, Bryn Kenney, Patrik Antonius, Krish Menon, Garrett Adelstein, Phil Ivey, and DoorDash founder Stanley Tang.

Ivey, as has been the case during the current High Stakes Poker season, wasn't very active at the table. He'll return next week with the same lineup, and perhaps we'll get to see him mix it up a bit more.

Persson, locked in a heated battle, extended his middle finger to Hellmuth after winning a pot last month in the $25,000 buy-in PokerGO Tour Heads-Up Showdown. For those who weren't familiar with his style of play, that sort of goofiness was on display during his first couple of High Stakes Poker sessions, albeit far less vulgar.

In the first hand, with the blinds throughout the night at $500/$1,000, Dwan opened to $3,000 from early position with the . Tang called with the in middle position, as did late position players Menon, holding the and Persson's . Kenney, who was recently accused of running an online poker cheating scheme, also came along in the big blind with the .

The flop came out , which hit a couple of players, including Menon, who flopped top pair, but surprisingly folded to Dwan's $6,000 bet. Persson, sitting on trips, raised it to $16,000 and it scared everyone away except "durrrr," who had nothing but queen-high. He made the call and then hit a horrible card for him .

"I'm going to give you this to look at and I want you to blink twice if you think I should continue on."

Both players checked and then action picked up on the river. Dwan fired out a wager of $31,000 and then Persson busted out some speech play.

"31? Oh, I thought it was 36. If it was 36, I was going to fold," a posturing Persson joked.

"I'm going to give you this to look at and I want you to blink twice if you think I should continue on," Persson told Menon before handing him his cards to look at.

After a giggling Menon returned the two cards to Persson, the owner of Maverick Gaming casino brand, then announced an all-in bet of $164,000.

"I could have deuce-seven," he told Dwan, who was in a tough spot facing a large bet. "He didn't snap-call, Patrik (Antonius). It's a good sign."

Dwan eventually made the correct fold and surrendered the $243,500 pot. Persson later used speech play to his advantage on multiple occasions, including in a flopped king-high flush hand against the flopped set of Kenney.

Two wealthy investors Krish Menon and Stanley Tang played a wild pot that might leave some curious as to what one of the players was thinking on the river.

Menon raised to $3,000 from an early position with the and received calls behind him from Person's , Antonius's , and Kenney's . Tang then came along from the big blind with the .

The flop was and everyone checked before the showed up on the river. Tang again checked his set to Menon, who bet out $9,000 with his sixes.

Action folded to Tang, and he went for a big check-raise to $31,000. Menon wasn't a believer and made the loose call. The river was a meaningless , and this time the DoorDash founder went for an over-bet of $120,000.

You're probably thinking that was the end of the hand and Menon quickly folded with so many potential superior hands out there, but you'd be wrong.

"That smells fishy," Menon said before making one of the loosest calls of the entire season. He lost the $326,500 pot and saw his stack drop well below $400,000.

There are three remaining episodes of High Stakes Poker Season 9 on PokerGO.

Check out our past recaps from Season 9 of High Stakes Poker on PokerGO:

Episode 12 will air at 5 p.m. PT next Monday on PokerGO. Fans can watch every episode, past and present, on-demand by purchasing a PokerGO subscription. We'll get to see next week if Adelstein was being too hard on himself or if his play wasn't up to the quality his fans are accustomed to seeing.

The American Legion Riders Chapter 9 host the Boots on the Ground Poker Run and Concert Sat, May, 5 – WOKV

Posted: at 12:46 am

Jacksonville The American Legion Riders Chapter 9 will host the 9th Annual Boots on the Ground Poker Run and Concert in Jacksonvilles Flamingo Lake RV Resort on Saturday, May 7, from 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Over 1,000 motorcycles and 200 jeeps will parade along roads within the RV Park lined with over 3000 authentic - but used - combat boots - to honor Americas fallen veterans from Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom and first responders from 9/11.

According to Marc Pica, the events organizer, each boot contains a picture of a fallen military hero and /or first responder. This year, the Riders added 13 boots to represent the soldiers killed at the airport in Afghanistan. Although Pica admits, they have yet to collect enough boots to represent every fallen hero.

Pica describes the day as an emotional, humbling, and beautiful.

I am so proud to be a part of this event, he said. The day literally sits in my heart and brings tears to my eyes. Everyone - especially our volunteers - put their hearts and souls into celebrating our military by honoring its fallen.

Noted as the largest motorcycle event in Jacksonville, Julie Mixon-Bergeron launched the event in Fernandina Beach after her son, Kelly J. Mixon, an Army Specialist was KIA in Afghanistan in 2013. Determined to grow the event into a motorcycle poker run, she approached Pica and The American Legion Riders Chapter 9. Pica and his comrades were thrilled to accept the assignment.

We created the largest motorcycle poker run in the state of Florida, he said. The Boots on the Ground Poker Run and Concert is a two-day party that begins on Friday night with a kick off concert from The Remains.

Motorcycles rev up their engines at at 11 a.m. to coincide with a flyover from the Dreamland Squadron.

Well have the Side Project Band Pipe and Drum, the Paul Wayne Experience, Metal Mucil and the Duval County Line headlining our music lineup, continued Pica. Kick-off concert starts Friday night. And Saturday is an all day, kid-friendly event filled with vendors, food trucks and fun events including the states largest - 44 stop - poker run. Theres even a golf cart poker run.

Pica explained that the monies from sponsorships like Dicks Wings, donations, registration and vendor fees will be equally distributed to local veteran organizations that we can interact with those currently alive so we dont have to memorialize them later.

Although we take nothing away from memorializing them, he continued. In the words of Calvin Coolidge, A nation that forgets to defendants will soon itself be forgotten.

Monies will be equally distributed to K9s For Warriors, Veterans Village of Northeast Florida, K9 Line, Inc., Project Vet Relief, Mission 22, The Florida Fallen Hero Memorial Fund and Wreaths Across America.

Boots for the event come from yearly boot drives from local bases.

When military personnel get new combat boots, they bring us their old ones Pica said. As long as theyre in good condition as to not disrespect the fallen, we take them. The Boots are stored by Wayne Terry, a local veteran who owns Puro Clean, in a climate controlled warehouse as to maintain the rubber soles. Everyone who lends a hand is part of a really good thing.

Pica concluded by inviting everyone to come out and experience the event that will take you breath away.

The perception that poker is gambling needs to change: Poker Sports League CEO – Business Today

Posted: at 12:46 am

Dabur India Chairman Amit Burmans Poker Sports League (PSL)one of the biggest poker tournaments in terms of prize pool and participationwants to build awareness about poker in India which has roughly around 30-40,000 professional poker players. PSL, which recently concluded its fourth season, is banking on its next season to break even.

Season 5 is where were going to break even and season 6 (roughly in FY23) is when were hoping to start making a profit. We want to take PSL international and replicate this model in London, UK and Vietnam, said Pranav Bagai, CEO and co-founder, Poker Sports League. Bagai said that the company earned Rs 8 crore in revenue during the first two seasons while Rs 10 crore has already been invested in the league so far.

His foray into the poker industry began with The Shark in 2008 and since then has created multiple poker related IPs, published Indias first poker magazine (Card Player India) and provided consultancy to Indias top online poker operators.

PSLs parent company, Mind Sports League (MSL) is valued at close to Rs 40 crore. Bagai said that his main goal is to make people aware of poker as a mind sport instead of gambling.

MSL has three verticals. Our main goal is making poker accessible to all. How do we do that? One is the offline part which is PSL. The second vertical is Hashtag Poker which is our soon-to-be-launched video app which is based on non-real money gaming, he said. MSLs third vertical, Bagai said, is a streaming vertical thats going up on Voot. We want to move beyond streaming content on Voot and pitch to everybody. Were working on two reality shows and one fiction show, he added.

As far as the regulation is concerned, Section 12 of the Public Gambling Act, 1867 says that games of mere skill are exempt from the application of the Act. A game of skill, according to various High Courts, is one in which the element of skill dominates the element of chance. International Mind Sports Association (IMSA), which is an association of the world governing bodies for games like contract bridge, chess, draughts, go, xiangqi, and mahjong, recognises poker as a mind sport.

Poker experts and industry veterans have called for clarity on regulation so that the game can be given the status of a real industry.

Were launching the video app Hashtag Poker to make people aware that its a game of skill. Thats why theres no real money involved. We dont want people to be irresponsible and do what other RMG (real money gaming) players are doing. Were developing their entire user journey from being exposed to the game to learning it and playing it responsibly, Bagai said.

If poker winners are being charged 30 per cent TDS on their winning, he asks, then why cant it be recognised as a real sport?

Plus, there are so many ways to create jobs in the field of tech, streaming, etc. Its only going to grow. Depending on their stakes, professionals can earn anywhere between Rs 20 lakhs to a crore a year, he said.

Dubai on the Brain: NeuroVigil’s Philip Low Assembles …

Posted: at 12:45 am

Senior leaders in science, government, and industry recruited for international Manhattan Project for the Brain

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates & PALO ALTO, Calif. & MONTREAL(BUSINESS WIRE)March 22, 2022

Neurotechnology Powerhouse NeuroVigil (ranked Top 10 most innovative companies in health care by Washington Post and Fast Company) announced at the New Technology & Mental Health Conference keynote during Dubais World Expo that it has recruited senior captains of industry, government and academia to scale operations leading up to the launch of its newest non-invasive iBrain brain monitor, designated by the New York Times as an innovation which will change your tomorrow.

This press release features multimedia. View the full release here: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20220322005998/en/

iBrain is the worlds smallest non-invasive brain monitor. The device itself is no bigger than a car key. The first generation iBrain was released by NeuroVigil in 2009 and since then, the potential for the device has only grown. In 2011 the technology was adapted for use in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) research at the request of NeuroVigil Scientific Advisory Board member, the late Dr. Stephen Hawking. As early as 2013, an individual with ALS was able to spell with iBrain and without any implant of any kind. The new iBrain will be used to accelerate this communication and to collect data from asymptomatic individuals to expedite the hunt for predictive biomarkers of Parkinsons Disease, brain cancer and drug overmedication, as well as to track brain state, sleep and drug response in the ICU.

NeuroVigils growth team of superstar experts were handpicked by its Chairman, CEO, Founder, Dr. Philip Low.

The team is headlined by many seasoned veterans including Dr. Gabriel Vargas, the Berkeley and UCSF-trained former Head of Neuroscience Biomarkers at Roche and of Neuroscience, Early Development at Amgen; Noam Ziv, the Technion-trained Former Qualcomm VP of Technology; Hans-Peter Goertz, a former economist at Roche and Novartis; Devin Goodman, who led Technology Operations for Andrew Yangs Presidential Campaign; EEG specialist at a major US hospital, Cody Holland; European entrepreneur Boris Blatnik; and the former head of the Institute for Quantum Computing in Waterloo, Canada, Dr. David Fransen, who has also previously held the position of Consul General of Canada, in Los Angeles. Stanford and University of California luminaries and NeuroVigil advisory board members, Prof. Kwabena Boahen, a father of modern neuromorphic engineering, Prof. Utkan Demirci, an authority in the fields of cancer detection, synthetic biology and point-of-care diagnostics, Prof. Patrick Mercier, MIT-trained world-class bioengineer, and Dr. Michael Castro, a Columbia-trained internationally renowned medical and Neuro-oncologist have all joined the effort.

The team will help the company scale its Manhattan Project for the Brain, a growing international conglomerate designed to accelerate the development of neurotechnology innovations and assist elite universities in leveraging their intellectual capital and support companies built on peer-reviewed science and clinical data, rather than on promises by marketing gurus. Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati and Kilpatrick Townsend, premier Silicon Valley and intellectual property law firms, respectively, as well as the University of Waterloo, the largest international supplier of software talent to Silicon Valley, San Diegos Launch Factory accelerator, and Wyomings Health Innovation Living Laboratory (Wyoming is the projects Los Alamos where many new technologies are to be beta-tested) are strategic partners. Conversations are ongoing with Johns Hopkins, the University of California, as well as Stanford and MIT where Dr. Low has held dual positions as an Adjunct Professor and Research Affiliate, respectively. Following Dr. Lows keynote address, Montreal committed up to $10M in initial services to the conglomerate across medical partners, including the Health Innovation District, LeoMed, Inc. and CHUM, Montreals University Hospital, designated by the US News & World Report as Canadas Most Innovative Hospital.

The Salk Institute, as well as two of its presidents, including Nobel Laureate Roger Guillemin, and another international innovative hospital are shareholders. Elite venture capitalists Dr. Howard Morgan, co-founder of First Round Capital and Renaissance Technologies and the first investor in Uber, and Timothy C. Draper, co-founder of Draper Associates and DFJ, law firm DLA Piper, two co-founders of Qualcomm and a former chairman of Tesla also invested in the company, which has never accepted any federal support, and which went to the market as early as 2009 with a research contract with Roche followed by another one with Novartis the company is currently in discussions regarding a research contract with a third Swiss Pharma company regarding ALS, brain cancer and Parkinsons.

I know of a no more driven, bright, focused and experienced collection of people, some whom I met across the table while negotiating, assembled towards a common cause since the original Manhattan Project, said Dr. Low during this keynote address. The upshot of our collective work, in my opinion, besides assisting people who need it the most, will be better health and, ultimately, the ushering of the Brain Age: billions of asymptomatic people and their physicians seamlessly accessing their brain health in real-time, without any surgery or hospitalization, thanks to a constellation of non-invasive, cruelty-free, wireless, affordable and precise brain technologies.

I first met Dr. Low over 10 years ago when I was head of CNS Biomarkers at Roche in Basel. At that time, I was already able to appreciate the enormous power and promise of NeuroVigils technology. Dr. Low has a grand ambitious vision to better humanity through a technology which enables us to monitor brain health non-invasively and also allows communication through thoughts alone. Although this sounds like an improbable vision, Philip has the right mix of strong scientific training, unusual intelligence and chutzpah to make this endeavor successful, said Dr. Gabriel Vargas, incoming Chief Medical Officer of NeuroVigil.

Dr. Lows bold dissertation thesis literally created a new paradigm for the study of brain waves. So far, the iBrain has proven to be an invaluable adjunct to pharmacological clinical trial research. Unintended adverse drug side effects involving the nervous system can now be identified sooner and at a significantly reduced cost to the developer. Yet, despite NeuroVigils success to date, I believe the most significant applications of this technology are yet to come. The future will see home-based biometrics becoming a central feature of modern medical practice as screening, monitoring and tracking of innovative health data evolve into standard components of the electronic medical record. Central to these assessments will be a brain health status measurement that has both diagnostic and prognostic validity, and given their prominence in this area, NeuroVigil will likely be the industry leader, predicted Dr. Mario Orlandi, Executive Director, Technology Assessment, Johnson & Johnson, as early as 2012. He was echoed in his comments at the time by Dr. Baltazar Gomez-Mancilla, Executive Director of Neuroscience and Translational Medicine at Novartis: NeuroVigil is now expanding quickly and attracting qualified personnel in the US and overseas The company has strong science, good leadership and a bold vision.

About Dr. Philip Low

Is an Austria-born Canadian mathematician and computational neuroscientist, inventor and industrialist. He started his research career at Harvard Medical School as a teenager and went on to write a 1- page PhD thesis, at the recommendation of Dr. Francis Crick, Nobel Laureate of DNA fame, which revolutionized dynamic brain activity mapping. He has 5 dozen international patents to his name and is also globally known as the author of the historic Cambridge Declaration on Consciousness, the first formal document ratified by professional neuroscientists to acknowledge the existence of non-human consciousness. Among many other honors, Dr. Low was recognized by The Scientist Magazine as a Scientist to Watch and by MIT Technology Review as one of the Top Young Innovators in the world, an honor shared with the founders of Google and Facebook.

Stocktake: Investors wary on Musk’s Twitter deal – The Irish Times

Posted: at 12:45 am

Elon Musk may be keen on buying Twitter, but investors are less excited. Last Tuesday the day after Twitter agreed to Musks $44 billion (41 billion) takeover offer Tesla shares tanked 12 per cent, with the electric car giant losing over $125 billion in market value.

Musks Twitter deal was not the sole reason for the sell-off growth stocks everywhere were slaughtered that day but its clear there is much scepticism about the wisdom of the move.

Back in 2015, Musk said he wouldnt recommend running two companies, saying it decreases your freedom quite a lot. If the Twitter deal goes ahead, however, he would be running five companies Tesla, Twitter, aerospace outfit SpaceX, engineering firm the Boring Company, and neurotechnology company Neuralink. Little wonder multiple Tesla analysts questioned whether Musk is spreading himself too thin.

Shareholders are also wary Musk may end up selling Tesla shares to get the deal done. Musk pledged Tesla shares in order to secure the necessary bank loans. According to Bloomberg calculations, he will need to add more money to meet margin requirements if Tesla shares, which traded around $880 last week, fall below $740.

Is Twitter really worth the hassle? Twitter is a slow-growing, money-losing, 16-year-old firm that couldnt find a rival bidder to Musk, even though his offer price was almost 30 per cent below last years high.

Dont be surprised if Musk ends up having second thoughts. Last week, Twitter shares were trading some 10 per cent below Musks offer price, indicating markets are sceptical as to whether this deal will ultimately get done.

About the Horae Gene Therapy Center at UMass Chan Medical School

The faculty of the Horae Gene Therapy Center is dedicated to developing therapeutic approaches for rare inherited disease for which there is no cure.
