This Is the Ideal Amount of Time to Spend in the Shower – Lifehacker

Showering is one of the biggest uses of water in a typical residential home, according to the EPA. You dont want to use too much water in your shower, but you do need more than a few minutes to get fully clean. So where is the balance?
Dermatologists recommend keeping showers short. If you have skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis, hot water can be irritating, and so can soaps and other products you use in the shower. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends keeping showers under 10 minutes if you have itchy skin, and if you have psoriasis, you may want to go further and limit showers to just five minutes. (Lukewarm water is better than hot, which will also help you save energy.)
A five-minute shower doesnt mean you should stand under the showerhead for four minutes and then do a cursory lather in the last minute. Good hygiene is important; if youre getting into the shower, make sure youre washing what needs to be washed.
That may mean taking a lot more than five minutes. Those of us with long hair may need to be in there 10 to 20 minutes to wash and condition properly, and comb out the tangles (a job best done while conditioner is in wet hair), not to mention shaving our legs. Arguably some of these jobs can be done while the water is off, but if you arent willing to give up your long hot showers, perhaps you can counter the detrimental effects on your skin and the environment by taking fewer of them. One shower a week is hygienic enough for most of us, and better for our skin anyway.
A lot of shower advice out there seems to center around five minutes as the ideal shower time. But if dermatologists are okay with five to 10 minutes, and some of us need more time, perhaps we should aim for the middle of that range. Eight minutes turns out to be the average length of a shower for most of us, which means that if you can get through your next shower in seven minutes or less, you can feel like an overachiever. Five minutes? Great, Im proud of you.
When it comes to water usage, standard showerheads use 2.5 gallons per minute, but showerheads with the WaterSense label all use 2.0 gallons per minute or less. So you can shower for 6.2 minutes with a low-flow head and use as much water as someone showering for five minutes with a standard head. Since youre also using less hot water, youll also save energy.
So to benefit both your skin and the environment, get an efficient showerhead, turn down the heat, and dont spend any longer in there than you really need to.

One-on-one with priest leads Japanese atheist to baptism – UCA News
Posted: at 6:45 am
Kazuhiro Sasahara met the priest suggested by his Catholic wife, a member of Kitami Church on Japan's island of Hokkaido
Kazuhiro Sasaharawas born into a family of the Buddhist Jodo Shinshu sect but considered himself an atheist. Because his wife, whom he met as a student, was baptized as an infant, their wedding was held in a Catholic church and their three children were baptized as infants.
I went to church once a year at Christmas and I didn't say anything about the faith of my wife or children, leaving that to my wife. Besides going to church on Sundays, my wife doesn't say much about her faith. However, compared to the beginning of our marriage, statues of Mary and crosses have multiplied all over the house," said the 63-year-old Japanese man.
After his retirement from years as a principal of elementary and junior high schools, Sasahara engaged in after-school children's classroom activities with the board of education until April of last year.
At that time, I thought it might be better to have the same faith as my wife. He did not believe in God's existence, but as his remaining years "shortened" he wanted to go into the future "with the same attitude as my wife with whom Ive shared life for so many years."
His wife, a member ofKitami Church on Japans northern island of Hokkaido, suggested that he meet the parish priest, FatherMasahiro Uesugi of Sapporo Diocese. Since July of last year, they have met once a month.
"At the time, I didn't have any strong desire for baptism or to attend any study sessions, said Sasahara. I just wanted to talk with the priest. I talked about books I had read, movies I had seen, TV dramas, and the state of the world today, and the priest talked about his interests."
Based on the Bible, they also discussed whether or not God exists. At one point, Sasahara introduced a book that explained the low probability of life on the many planets in space.
He said that, according to the book, the odds are similar to throwing the parts of a watch into a 25-meter pool, stirring the water and drawing out the original watch."
Sasahara continued: As we talked about the miracle of life, I came to think that the miracles of Christ in the Bible could be real.
When Sasahara first heard about the Holy Spirit, he thought there was no such thing. But he realized that there are times when he desires the good and other times when he goes in the wrong direction.
Thinking about the desire to go for the good began to convince me of the existence of the Holy Spirit who leads the heart to the good, and that I could believe, he said.
Describing his desire to be baptized, Sasahara said: "I heard that even FatherUesugis faith can be shaken, but above all I think it's a big thing that I was able to talk with him one on one about issues that I wouldn't normally talk about with anyone else."
According to Sasahara, we "live behind a faade with others." However, when he shared his heart with FatherUesugi, "I didn't have to try to protect myself, I was able to look into my heart as I was."
Sasahara said that when he decided to receive baptism, I asked FatherUesugi, If I start a new life with baptism, how about doing it on my birthday?"
"It so happens that my birthday is April 16, this years Easter Vigil," he added.
From his involvement with children and families with various problems during his years as an educator, Sasahara feels that "the Church can be a place to welcome those who are troubled and seeking peace of mind. As a member of the Church, I want to be a person who can listen to them."
Kazuhiro Sasahara will be baptized atKitami Church during the Easter Vigil on April 16.

Zack Snyder’s Star Wars-Themed Movie Recruits The Princess Bride Star – Giant Freakin Robot
Posted: at 6:44 am
By Douglas Helm| 9 seconds ago
Zack Snyder has a new Netflix movie in the pipeline and it looks like he just landed an interesting new addition to the cast. Cary Elwes, known for his beloved character in the Princess Bride among other notable roles, is set to join the cast of Rebel Moon.
Rebel Moon is Zack Snyders stab at a Star Wars-esque sci-fi epic. The movie depicts a peaceful colony that is threatened by the armies of a despot names Regent Belisarius. The small planet sends out an emissary to seek out aid from neighboring planets to fight back against the invasion. This will be his next project following The Army of the Dead and his directors cut re-release of Justice League.
While we have a brief plot description for Zack Snyders Rebel Moon, along with the casting details, theres no information yet on who Cary Elwes will be playing. We do know that Sofia Boutella will be playing the young emissary sent to call on the help of other planets. We also know that Rupert Friend will be playing the tyrant Regent Belisarius. At this point, Elwes could be playing for the good side or for the bad guys. Well have to wait for more information about the cast or maybe a trailer to come out before that can be determined.
In addition to Cary Elwes, the cast for Zack Snyder in Rebel Moon seems pretty stacked. Sofia Boutella, Charlie Hunnam, Doona Bae, Rupert Friend, Ray Fisher, Stuart Martin, Corey Stoll, Michael Huisman, and Alfonso Herrera are all onboard as well. Shay Hatten and Kurt Johnstad handle the script.
Before Rebel Moon hits, well be getting another Zack Snyder project in 2022, with a TV series based on The Army of the Dead. The show is called Army of the Dead: Las Vegas and depicts the initial outbreak of the zombies in Vegas. That wont be the end of Snyders new zombie-focused cinematic universe, as a sequel to the first movie has been announced titled Planet of the Dead. He also has a movie announced called The Fountainhead which is based on an Ayn Rand novel.
In addition to starring in Zack Snyders Rebel Moon, Cary Elwes has plenty of upcoming projects as well. Hell have a role in the upcoming seventh entry to the Mission: Impossible series. That movie wont be hitting until July of next year, but it has a stacked cast as well. Elwes will be starring alongside heavy-hitters like Tom Cruise, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, Hayley Atwell, and more. Mission Impossible 7 will be directed by Christopher McQuarrie.
If youre looking forward to Zack Snyders Rebel Moon, you might have a little while to wait. The movie is just entering pre-production, so theres no news yet on a potential release date. Judging by how busy the cast and crew are, it might be a year or more before we can check out Zack Snyders latest take on the sci-fi genre. Stay tuned for more news and well keep you updated about Rebel Moon.

Debate sparked after University of Bristol students try to ‘cancel’ controversial speaker – Bristol Live
Posted: at 6:44 am
Debate has been sparked after activists at the University of Bristol held a protest against a speaker who was invited to attend a private event. Protesters barricaded the door of a university society's event at the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery, at which libertarian Yaron Brook was scheduled to appear.
Brook was asked to speak by the university's Liberty Society about the causes of war in relation to the conflict in Ukraine, and the event was also used as a fundraiser for the Ukranian war effort. But the door was barricaded by activists, who played loud music through speakers, banged on doors and chanted, which caused the event to be shortened slightly.
The protesters have accused Brook, who is the chairman of the Ayn Rand Institute, of having "hateful" and "sinister" politics due to his views on US imperialism, Islam and Palestine. Brook has previously advocated for a ban on Muslims immigrating into the United States of America and Europe on the basis that the western world is "at war with radical Islam". He also supports Israel in its conflict with Palestine, which lead to the deaths of 5,600 Palestinians and 250 Israelis between 2008 and 2020, according to data published by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
Read more: Police called as protesters 'blockade door' to Bristol University lecture
Student Action Bristol, who organised the protest, declined to be interviewed for this article. But in the aftermath of the event, they claimed they had "no choice" but to block Brook from speaking. In a statement posted on social media, they wrote: "Yaron Brook represents a sinister politics, one which harms the most vulnerable students in our university.
"He wears a suit and speaks the language of power - but his ideas are no different to those of Tommy Robinson or Nick Griffin. Should he or his kind attempt to speak at the university again, we will be back and in greater numbers."
But Brook told Bristol Live that he does not agree with the attempt to "silence" him, and says the students should have tried to engage him in a debate instead. He said: "I completely accept the fact that people have a right to protest, they don't like what I have to say.
"They don't like me, they don't like something I've said in the past, that's fine. What I don't think is acceptable, and what I don't think the university should allow, is the disruption of an event.
"Students have put a lot of time and effort into organising an event, I came out from London to do the event. To disrupt it, to attempt to stop an event from happening and to attempt to silence a speaker should be unacceptable and there should be ways to deal with it by security and police.
"We invited them in to ask questions but they didn't want to come in under those terms. Their whole goal was to silence me and I think that's unacceptable." Brook also denied having "hateful" views on Israel or on Islam, and said that the claims that the protesters have made about him are "ridiculous".
He said: "Is it out of the mainstream to be pro-Israeli? I guess it is in UK universities, but that's a little nuts and a little crazy. I'm pro-Israel and I think the Palestinians have been betrayed by their leadership, and have gone down a path that is not in their interest.
"I think it's sad what's happening in Israel and among the Palestinians and I think Israel is in the right in the conflict. I don't think my views on Islam are that out of the mainstream and I don't think my views on Islam are that radical.
"I'm not particularly fond of any religion, I'm hugely critical of Christianity and Judaism and Islam. And in the context of 9/11, I've said things about jihadism or totalitarian Islam that are pretty harsh, but they deserve it given their terrorist activities.
"But Islam? My views on Islam qua religion? They don't know what my views on Islam qua religion is."
And he added: "The fact is, my views are not mainstream, but if we only accept mainstream views I think we'll be doing a huge disservice to the culture in which we live, and I think particularly the universities where were supposed to be challenged, we're supposed to be thinking a bit outside of the box."
Following the event, Brook wrote on Twitter: "Tonight a group of Leftist students tries to Cancel me at Bristol University in the UK. In spite of their threats and the obnoxious noise they created my talk on the Roots of War proceeded as planned. I will not let thugs intimidate me into silence."
Some other students at the university have criticised the activists' decision to try and 'cancel' the event. Eshaan Badesha, who is the treasurer of the university's Labour Club society, says that he "despises" Brook's views but did not agree with the protest.
The 20-year-old said that, while he might have supported direct action if Brook had been invited to speak publicly, such as at a rally, he does not support trying to shut down debate at a private event.
He said: "If the SU thought it was acceptable to have then we don't think we should allow students not to have their right to have that speaker talk. The difference would have been if he was there to give off the views that he has before on things like American foreign policy, Islamic extremism.
"But in this sense he was there as a libertarian promoting his philosophy and promoting his view on the Ukraine crisis, and I feel like that was perhaps a step too far, to try and no-platform him. The issue we have as well is, the people attending that event might not necessarily know that much about him, and they might have gone in good faith to learn more about his views.
"When they see people on the so-called left perhaps trying to shut down the views of someone like that, it's only going to consolidate the views they already hold. Ideally our politics, as members of the Labour Club, our views are that we're trying to bring people on a journey and tell them, 'this is what we stand for'.
"When you go to places where there's a private event, and a small group of people tells them, 'we're going to no-platform your speaker' and they intimidate those members who aren't as aware, are you actually benefiting your cause there? Because now all the news is going to be not about Yaron Brook and his awful views, it's going to be about a bunch of students causing security problems, and it doesn't actually help the cause that you're fighting for either."
And, following the event, the Liberty Society wrote a lengthy statement on its Facebook page condemning the actions of the students. It said: "The UoB Liberty Society aims to provide an environment which facilitates the free exchange of ideas, and hosting external speakers is one way of doing so.
"The society does not necessarily endorse the views of our speakers and we encourage debate and discussion between students. We are saddened to write this statement but do so as attempted censorship on campus is no longer looming in the shadows but is vividly on display in one of the most prestigious universities in the world."
This is not the first time that a speaker at the university has been targeted by activists. The university is currently being sued by Raquel Rosario Sanchez over claims that the institution failed to protect her from harassment and bullying by activists.
It is alleged she was targeted over her involvement with campaign group Womans Place UK after trans rights activists protested against a talk she was holding and labelled her a terf (trans-exclusionary radical feminist). A spokesperson for Bristol SU said: "As a charity we are bound to uphold the law and allow freedom of expression, even where our views may differ from the speakers invited."
A University of Bristol spokesperson said: We are aware that a protest took place at an event last week held by the Liberty Society. The University adheres to the principles of free speech and all views, including those that can be difficult to hear for some, should be able to be expressed and heard with tolerance and mutual respect.
The University respects the right to protest, however we recognise that we also have a duty to ensure this is carried out in a safe manner which doesn't endanger others. Our Security Team were in attendance to ensure that the event was conducted safely. They identified that around 12 protestors were sitting in front of a fire exit from the room where the event was taking place and that they had linked arms and wouldnt move.
This was carefully managed by our Security Team. Due to the health and safety issues associated with such actions the Police were called to attend and the protestors were escorted out of the building after the event.
"We understand that the event went ahead as planned. If any individuals felt personally threatened, or have concerns about any aspect of the event, we would encourage them to report this.

Rishi Sunak is a terrible bloke, regardless of his wife’s finances – JOE.co.uk
Posted: at 6:44 am
Rishi Sunak is the man most likely to be our next prime minister.
Just kidding.
While the rest of the country is weighing up if they can save on heating costs by putting their head in the oven, the chancellor has swanned off to his 5m house in Santa Monica.
The man responsible for tackling the cost of living crisis is taking a well-deserved break in a house with a pet spa. Whatever that is.
Sunak has had an almost unparalleled fall from grace, suffering a public wrath usually reserved for Love Island contestants and immigrants.
The BBC photoshopped him into superman for gods sake and now hes a byword for Tory cruelty.
His approval ratings have fallen a staggering 38 points since 2020, going from being one of the most popular chancellors in memory to radicalising money-saving expert Martin Lewis.
So, how did the Oxbridge-educated public schoolboy who worked for a hedge fund get so out of touch?
The story starts, like all good villain narrative arcs, in the City of London.
You wont find much about this on Sunaks website, dear reader, but after stints at 40,000 a year Winchester College, Oxford, and then Goldman Sachs, the chancellor worked at TCI.
TCI is a hedge fund that played a significant role in the collapse of RBS.
I wont get into the details, Ill just encourage you to revisit Margot Robbies bath scene in The Big Short.
Sunak and a TCI colleague went on to found their own hedge fund. That colleague was landed with an 8m tax avoidance bill.
The chancellor has denied any involvement in this matter, or the TCI scheme.
The point is, hes a born to rule Lord of the Manor.
And despite what you might have heard about the collapse of feudalism in your history lessons - we are all still very much living on his estate.
In fact, we never left.
You could see Sunaks mask slipping when he was challenged about his wifes continued involvement in Infosys, a company operating in Russia.
Sunak had called for investors to divest from Russia but said he was surprised he didnt go all Will Smith on the people criticising his wife for profiting from Putins regime.
And now he's overseeing a cost of living crisis that it's estimated will push 1.3m people into absolute poverty. Skyrocketing energy prices are about to make households 1,000 worse off a year.
And what is Sunak doing about this?Hes not taxing the energy companies that have recorded "bumper profits" and have "more money than they know what to do with" to offset the prices.
Hes loaning every household just 200 that theyre obliged to pay back in the next five years. It might actually be more cost-effective to burn the 200 instead of turning the radiator on.
The chancellor has also devised a cunning plan that essentially taxes people for voting Labour.
Sunak launched a scheme meaning that social care will be paid for by a rise in National Insurance.
National Insurance is a tax on workers' earnings. People who work pay National Insurance but dont need social care - and they largely voted for Labour in 2019.
Whereas old people, who do need social care but dont pay National Insurance, are more likely to vote Tory.
Tory voters are no longer the slick city boys of the 80s that would have caved their own skull in if Mrs Thatcher asked.
Theyve moved to the shires and will need their arses wiped for them in a few years.
And theyd still cave their skull in if it would bring back Thatcher from the dead.
Lets go back to how fishy Rishi became dishy. When he wasnt being fawned over for being conventionally attractive, the superhero chancellor sent the publics hearts a flutter by launching the furlough scheme, where the government paid 80 per cent of peoples wages who otherwise would have had to be laid off.
The government spent a huge 70 billion on this before it was abruptly ended in September 2021 to widespread concern.
This was a hugely generous package but there was a real oversight. Three million people were simply excluded from government support, by virtue of various self-employment quirks.
Old school Tory Sunak consistently claims that hes a low tax Conservative, despite the public facing the largest tax burden for close to 100 years.
While people confront the biggest fall in living standards since the 1950s, the UK is the only major economy actually increasing the tax burden on its citizens.
For years, Sunak got to play politics on easy mode.
He pursued massively popular schemes like furlough and eat out to help out. The country needed help and was welcome to receive it.
This exposes the hollowness at the heart of fishy Rishis brand.
Vulnerable people are making impossible choices between food and fuel, just so Sunak can role play Ayn Rand.
To paraphrase Lord Farquaad, some of you may freeze but thats a chance hes willing to take.
And whys he willing to take that chance?
I hear a mansion is a pretty easy place to stay warm.

Some never leave the picturesque shoreline, rotating between a lounge chair on the fine sand to a distant seat at the pools swim-up bar. But if sitting beside a quiet body of water for more than 15 minutes leaves a person antsy, adventurers can experience the thrills of Provo, too.
STAY
The Grace Bay Clubs three pools, its abundance of beach and pool lounge chairs, and its large selection of complimentary Hobie catamarans, stand-up paddleboards, and kayaks are just a few ways to spend the day. Some of the best places to break from the sun are on the expansive terraces attached to each gorgeous room, or at Just Tacos, the resorts on-the-beach taco shack, where a gregarious local named Garth plays country music and makes strong cocktails with recipes that he claims are secret.
Point Grace, with only 35 cottages and seaside suites, is much quieter. Its location on the point removes from view many resorts along Grace Bay Beach, creating a deep illusion of isolation on the island. The stand-alone treatment huts at the spa allow guests to experience massages with that added stroke from the island breeze.
If removing oneself from the already quiet collection of resorts is the goal, try the lovely Wymara, a boutique hotel at the far end of Grace Bay Beach. For even more isolation, the leeward side of the island is home to the Shore Club. Their property features beautiful rooms, Sui-Rena sushi grill that pairs Asian and Peruvian cuisineand more endless stretches of turquoise and blue.
FOOD & DRINK
After a day of adventure, or just extreme sun-tanning, sample the cuisine of the islands. Two top restaurants are around the corner from one another. Coyabas seafood is spectacular, and its pork bellycomplemented by cubes of watermelon and a mild fetais one of the tastiest bites on the island. Round out dinner with apple pie for two. Its baked right in the bowl and the top crust is so subtle and sweet that it mimics the caramelized sugar atop crme brulee. Coco Bistro sets its white tablecloth service in a gorgeous palm grove. From conch to tuna, the restaurant does everything with grace.
For breakfast or a midday snack, enjoy Lemon 2 Go, a lovely caf and flower shop on Grace Bays quiet, main thoroughfare. Besides fresh juices and good coffee, they serve spicy Trinidadian samosas and tasty Jamaican beef patties.
On the southside of the island sits Omars Beach Hut, where turquoise picnic tables meet the turquoise sea. Add to that an order of whole snapper and a Down Da RoadTurks Head Brewerys light-drinking IPAand life is sweet. Nearer to the airport is a local favorite: Sweet Ts, a pink-tiled, octagonal hut in a parking lot. The only thing on their menu is fried chicken and French fries. A bucket of that on the beach is a wonderful contrast to a week of resort dining.
Head to Graces Cottage for after-dinner drinks. The dark courtyard sits in wonderful juxtaposition to the well-lit bar where a floral mosaic behind the well-dressed Whiskeythe bartendermakes the room feel like an art gallery that pays tribute to a single work. But here, the true encomium is to Caribbean rum. Graces Cottages extensive Caribbean and Latin American rum menu features spirits from Appleton to Zacapa. On Tuesdays and Saturdays, a musician brings even more intimacy to the courtyard.
For a livelier scene, head to Infiniti, home of the longest bar in the entire Caribbean. The 2-sided black bar stretches 90 feet from a thatched-roof serving area and out toward the sand. Daily entertainment invites a sophisticated crowd and on weekends, hundreds of revelers.
EXPERIENCE
Providenciales is a difficult island to travel without a rental car. And taxis get pricey. But since the island can be driven around in a couple hours, one of the best ways to journey is with Marvelous Marvin and his sidekick, Niko Paliko. The pair runs Island Style Tours TCIs buggy adventures. Part comedy show and part driving tour, Marvelous Marvin narrates as guests, who possess moxie and a healthy dose of trust in the process, speed across the island in single file. It stops at Thomas Stubbs Cheshire Plantation, where cotton plants, ruins of the main house, former slave quarters and two-century-old artifacts tell a story of colonial rule, and then over to Da Conch Shack for delicious conch and fish served in a variety of fried forms.
One of the best ways to experience the waters around the Turks and Caicos is by boat. Voyages whisk visitors over to private islands. Other boats visit the second largest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere for snorkeling expeditions. Then there are those party boat tours. For a combination of all three, Island Vibes Tours runs half-day boat rides that comprise an hour at a reef teeming with fish and coral; an hour on the remote Half Moon Bay, empty, but for the myriad rock iguanas scampering between beaches; and an hour of strong rum punch and high diving from the roof of the boat.
For something stronger, swim over to the Tiki Bar, a no frills establishment built on the water and owned by a former Turks and Caicos prime minister.
To snorkel from the shores of Providenciales, walk to the Bight Reef, also known as the Coral Gardens, and swim with reef fish and turtles. The reef is one part of the greater Princess Alexandra National Park.

The Best Caribbean Island Destination For Your Perfect Golf Vacation – Forbes
Posted: at 6:43 am
Royal Isabela may just be the best golf course you can play in the Caribbean - but it is just one of ... [+] eighteen great choices around Puerto Rico.
When it comes to planning an island vacation in the Caribbean, there are tons of choices, big and small, with arguments to be made for just about every spot. But if you are a golfer, the options thin out dramatically. There are several smaller islands with one or two good courses, but when it comes to critical mass, the kind of assortment that makes places like Scottsdale or Pinehurst golf destinations, there are really only two contenders, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.
For the traveling golfer who likes variety and wants to play multiple courses rather than the same one over and over again, the win goes to Puerto Rico. I love the DR and it has some standout golf resorts, but they tend to be isolated as most Americans dont want to drive around, so the vast majority of golf travelers here just go to one place to stay and play. While there are multiple courses at different locales, this variety goes underutilized. But when you compare how easy it is to rent a car, drive around Puerto Rico and hit multiple spots, the appeal grows significantly, and in addition all, of Puerto Ricos courses are accessible to the public, while the single best golf course in the DR, Playa Grande, once a resort course, went totally private and no longer allows any non-members. Even famed golf resort Casa de Campo includes a private layout its hotel visitors cannot access.
The East Course at TPC Dorado beach is the island's most famous layout, known for hugging the ocean ... [+] at the start and finish.
Puerto Rico is easy to navigate and very easy to get to, with lots of non-stops to San Juan, whereas many travelers to other Caribbean destinations have to fly here anyway and then make another connection. That means many travelers can arrive in time to play golf the same afternoon, or play a final morning round before heading to the airport, a much more efficient way to vacation. It is especially user-friendly in the age of COVID as it requires no testing to go to or return home from (no risk of getting stuck there in quarantine, unlike every other Caribbean golf destination except the US Virgin Islands) and it has the highest vaccination rate of any place in the U.S.
Ive been to Puerto Rico several times and just visited again, and it was a stark reminder of how good and varied the lodging, entertainment and especially food is on top of the golf, with something for every taste and budget - there are more than 4,000 restaurants here and I didnt have a less than standout meal my entire trip. In addition, there are tons of non-golf attractions, from the historic to the worlds largest rum distillery (Bacardi) to the natural wonders, most notably the only rainforest within the U.S. Forest Service (El Yunque), rare bioluminescent bays, and of course, beaches.
Costa Caribe Golf & Country Club has 27-holes, but its signature island green is the most famous.
But when it comes to golf the island has a whopping 18 courses, many of them on the ocean, while El Yunque, the spectacular rain forest, can be seen from several top layouts. Designers read like a Whos Who of great golf architects, including Greg Norman, Robert Trent Jones Sr., Robert Trent Jones Jr., Chi Chi Rodriguez, Tom Fazio, Tom Kite, Rees Jones, and Gary Player. Here are some highlights:
Historically the biggest golf resort on the island used to be the Dorado Beach resort complex, originally built by Laurance Rockefeller as part of his Rockresorts brand, and for a long time it was home to two sibling Hyatt resorts and four 18-hole courses. It has been reborn in recent years as the only Ritz-Carlton Reserve property in the U.S., Reserve being the luxury brands highest tier with just five locations worldwide. Today the Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve is an exceptional luxury resort that is home to two courses comprising the 36-hole TPC Dorado Beach, the only member of the PGA Tours TPC network in the entire Caribbean. A radical growth in residents and members (including several Major League Baseball stars) has forced the resort to limit play to its overnight guests, so you have to stay here to play these. If you can swing that its worth doing, because the East Course, always the most famous of the original four, has one of the most memorable starts in all of golf with a long oceanfront drive in the cart to the first tee, and wonderful ocean vistas from the get-go, whereas many coastal designs wait three plus hours to reach the sea. It also returns to the same great views at the finish. TPC Dorado Beach is a first-rate operation with forecaddies and excellent conditions, and construction is under way on a third eighteen here, which will put it in a tie as the largest golf resort slate in the Caribbean.
In my informed opinion, the single best course on the island is the stunning Royal Isabela, part of a boutique resort on the less visited northwestern shore. This is wonderful resort with its own farm growing produce for the restaurant, and all lodging in standalone casitas with private plunge pools and terraces. The golf course is as close as you can get to a links in the region, exquisite with many dramatic clifftop holes hugging the ocean, you can walk it with caddies which is rare, and when it opened a decade ago I wrote about it in detail here at Forbes (which may be dated). I said then that is like Pebble Beach Golf Links transported to an even more scenic setting, and I stand by that assessment - no matter how much golf you have played around the globe, you will find this an exceptional course.
Major winner and former World Number One golfer Jason Day is one of many stars who have played in ... [+] the PGA TOUR's Puerto Rico Open. (Photo by Richard Heathcote/Getty Images)
The PGA Tours Puerto Rico Open (historically held in late February/early March) has brought superstars such as Jason Day, Bryson DeChambeau, Jordan Speith, and Tony Finau to the island, and is held on the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserves Championship Course. The Hyatt is a step down in price from the Ritz-Carlton and neighboring St. Regis Bahia Beach, but is an excellent full-service resort with great dining options, first rate lodging, a huge lagoon style pool complex with cabanas, and a stunning beach - so stunning that the new version of TV show Fantasy Island was filmed here. Ive stayed at the property and would be quite happy to return. The Hyatt has two of Puerto Ricos better golf courses, both designed by Tom Kite. These are a little more Florida-style with lots of water within the courses, sometimes on both sides of the fairway, in addition to ocean views.
The St. Regis Bahia Beach is the other top-tier luxury golf resort here, and like the Ritz-Carlton Reserve, part of Marriotts industry leading Bonvoy rewards programs. Many golfers are familiar with the Audubon International Sanctuary program that certifies eco-friendly golf courses that use less chemicals, protect wildlife and meet many other standards. But the group has expanded to certify entire communities and resorts as well, and Bahia Beach was one of the first to earn this, and it is evident in the lush greenery and tropical flowers at every turn through the attractive property. About 65% of the nearly 500 acres are preserved as green areas, sanctuaries or nature trails, and there is a very extensive trail network throughout. The golf course is much different from its neighbors, winding through thick jungle-like foliage with some tight fairways when it strays away from the two-mile long beach, set at the foothills of the 28,00-acre El Yunque National Rain Forest.
The Wyndham Grand Rio Mar's Tom Fazio-designed Ocean Course is aptly named.
I have not stayed myself, but another top pick for a Puerto Rico golf vacation is the more affordable Wyndham Grand Rio Mar, a very full-service resort with two standout courses. The Wyndham is big with about 400-rooms, multiple restaurants, a full casino, and is set on two-miles of uncrowded beach. It is has the most going on under one roof in Puerto Rico, and the golf is especially varied, featuring the Tom Fazio-designed Ocean Course with is famed coastal 16th hole, and the Greg Norman-designed River course, which has deceptively wide fairways, a plus given that the river is well utilized throughout, and it has stunning El Yunque views. I had one of my favorite meals on the island in the clubhouse here, and the Ocean Course also has a beloved open-air bar/eatery, Hole in One, in its center, overlooking one and ten.
There are many other options, and I havent gotten to all of them yet. El Conquistador is another well-known golf resort with an Arthur Hills course (and private island and waterpark). Punta Borinquen is Puerto Ricos oldest full-sized golf course, built by the Army in 1940 as part of a base and said to be a favorite of President Eisenhowers. When the base closed in 1973 it became an accessible public course and is perched atop dramatic seaside cliffs near Royal Isabela. There are many other standalone courses including the 27-hole Costa Caribe Golf & Country Club with its signature island green. While I regret not playing some of these, its nice to have reasons to go back to this tropical golf paradise again.
Discover Puerto Rico, the islands visitor bureau, has several helpful articles about golf grouped by subject such as near San Juan, most affordable and individual resort profiles, all of which can be found here.

All-inclusive resorts come in all shapes and sizes. How do you find the right one? – Travel Weekly
Posted: at 6:43 am
All-inclusive resorts have come a long way since Belgian entrepreneur Gerard Blitz introduced Club Med resorts to the world in the 1950s.
Today's all-inclusive resorts span the globe and offer more than ever before in terms of services, accommodations, culinary options, beverage choices, entertainment and activities geared to specific audiences.
Today, for instance, the Club Med brand has grown to include resorts from Florida to the Caribbean, from Mexico to Brazil, the Alps, Europe and the Mediterranean, Africa, Asia and the Indian Ocean.
Another pioneer in the category, Sandals Resorts International founder Butch Stewart, opened Sandals Montego Bay in 1981, the first of the Sandals brand and the first all-inclusive couples' resort in Jamaica.
As he opened more resorts, Stewart continued to raise the bar with new features: soaking tubs, overwater bungalows, butler service, free scuba and diving ... the list goes on and on.
Sandals now totals 15 adults-only resorts on six islands; three family-friendly Beaches resorts on two islands; and Fowl Cay, a private island resort in the Bahamas with six villas.

The all-inclusive model evolved over the years, and eventually most of the major hotel companies introduced properties of their own, attracted by the popularity and success of brands like Club Med and Sandals.
Independent hotels, too, have become part of the mix, including Elite Island Resorts' nine properties on four islands and in Panama; Ocean Hotels Group's O2 Beach Club & Spa and Sea Breeze Beach House in Barbados; Jumby Bay in Antigua and Barbuda; and Serenity at Coconut Bay in St. Lucia.
So how does a travel advisor sift through all these offerings to pick the perfect resort for a particular client? After all, what is a perfect fit for a couples getaway might not work for a destination wedding or a family reunion.
"All-inclusives are not one size fits all; you need to match the right brand and experience to the right client," said Helen Papa of Travel Boutique Hub Travel. "With the increase in travel requests, we're seeing many more requests across all options. For the all-inclusive brands, the increase is primarily for multiple families traveling together."
Nikki Miller of Travel With Nikki said, "I let my customers know that all-inclusives are great to sit and flop. I make it clear that not all resorts are the same, which is why there are so many and different price points. All-inclusives have increased in appeal to my clients who are not ready to cruise or are not vaccinated.
"Clients aren't ready for Europe or Asia but are tired of being trapped at home," she added. "They want to get away to recharge and be with others, but not too many others."

All-inclusive bookings are 75% of the business at Susan Peavey Travel.
"I'm getting more requests for all-inclusives, because they are a convenient and cost-effective way to travel, especially with Covid protocols," said the agency's owner, Susan Peavey, who encourages clients to leave the property and explore a bit.
"I suggest that the guest book excursions and tours," she said. "It's important to get out and see what the destination has to offer. Support the locals, shop local."
"The hardest part is choosing between so many fabulous resorts, so we work to narrow down the options to match clients with the resort that best fits their personality and preferences," said Becky Schulze, Accent Travel Agency. "Of the vacations we sell to Mexico and the Caribbean, all-inclusives account for 80% to 85% of those trips."
Schulze said that the agency never stopped getting requests for all-inclusives during the past two years.
"It was one of the consistent requests throughout the pandemic. People were comforted knowing they would have consistent quality of service, health and safety options," she said.

AwayBug Travel's Angie Fanning said, "I usually tell clients who are budget conscious that the top three [all-inclusive] destinations are the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Mexico. If a client has a bigger budget, wants something more off the beaten path or has already been to those destinations, we will explore others."
Close to 30% of her bookings are for all-inclusives. The agency is still getting requests, "but now they are ready to start planning their bigger bucket-list trips to places like Europe," Fanning said.
Avoya Network advisor Mary Smith said all-inclusive bookings make up 65% of her business.
"My clients like the ease of having everything booked under one vendor and that most everything is paid up front," she said. "It's very important to prequalify the customer, as each hotel brand has a different vibe."
Allison Amos of In the Know Experiences said, "My clients are looking to stay within a specific budget, want to relax without the fuss of planning or making decisions. My advice is geared to the clients' goals and budget."
Caryn Strayer Coomer of Calyco Travel said advisors need to do their homework before recommending an all-inclusive. But clients need to do their homework, as well, she added.
"Not only should agents qualify their clients, but clients should qualify their agent," Coomer said. "Make sure you choose an agent who travels frequently and continues to educate themselves, is able to compare and contrast destinations and resorts easily and communicates the difference between two or three resorts in the same budget range."
