Amazon plans to accuse union victors of coercing voters – Protocol
Posted: April 9, 2022 at 3:58 am
Following the first successful union election in an Amazon warehouse, the company shared in a filing that it plans to file several objections to the conduct of both the union and the National Labor Relations Board in an effort to contest the results.
The Amazon Labor Union became the first group to successfully unionize a group of Amazon workers when it won an election at the JFK8 warehouse in Staten Island by more than 500 votes on April 1. Amazon immediately announced its objection to the result and also expressed its intention to challenge the conduct of the NLRB, the federal body that oversees the administration of U.S. labor laws and union elections.
Both parties have the right to file objections to union election conduct after the results are announced, and the NLRB must rule on those objections before it can officially certify the results of the election. While the company has not issued further public comment since the vote on April 1, Amazon's April 7 filing with the NLRB shows that the company plans to accuse the Amazon Labor Union of coercing people to vote in favor of the union, as well as accusing the NLRB of behavior that "interfered with employee free choice."
In the filing, the company asked the NLRB for more time to gather evidence of these accusations, and the NLRB granted the extension.
The employees have spoken and their voices have been heard, Eric Milner, an attorney for the Amazon Labor Union, said in a statement to the Associated Press. Amazon is choosing to ignore that, and instead engage in stalling tactics to avoid the inevitable."
A second union election with the ALU for a different Staten Island facility will begin on April 25. Amazon union organizers with the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union in Bessemer, Alabama, are also waiting on official election results, where just over 400 contested ballots will determine a victor there.

This is not a drill: Twitter is testing an edit button – Protocol
Posted: at 3:58 am
It's not an April Fool's joke after all. Twitter announced Tuesday that it actually is working on an edit button, days after tweeting about it seemingly in jest. In fact, the company said it has been looking into the feature since last year and will begin testing with Twitter Blue members "in the coming months."
Jay Sullivan, Twitter's head of consumer product, said an editing tool has been the most requested Twitter feature for years. "People want to be able to fix (sometimes embarrassing) mistakes, typos and hot takes in the moment," Sullivan tweeted, adding that people usually delete their tweet and try again if there's an error. Relatable!
The company tweeted from its official Twitter account on Friday April Fool's Day that it was toying with the long-requested tool. But it seemed too good to be true, and Twitter just couldn't stop joking about it, so how were we supposed to believe it? When Reuters asked Twitter to clarify whether it was a joke, the company responded: "We cannot confirm or deny but we may edit our statement later." The bit continued on Monday, when Elon Musk polled his followers about whether Twitter should add an edit button, and Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal weighed in too.
Sullivan said Twitter's work on the edit button is anything but a joke, and the platform is weighing rules like time limits and controls to ensure an edit button wouldn't "alter the record of the public conversation." Adding an edit tool has also been a controversial topic among Twitter employees, and former CEO Jack Dorsey has in the past said "we'll probably never do it."
Right now, the closest thing to an edit button is the undo feature, but it's limited to Twitter Blue subscribers, who pay for extra Twitter perks. Twitter is testing the edit button for Twitter Blue subscribers as well, but it's unclear if a widely rolled out editing tool would be available to only those subscribers or to everyone. Sullivan said an edit button is one feature Twitter is looking into to give users "more choice and control" on the platform.

Epic Games and Lego team up to build a ‘family-friendly’ metaverse – Protocol
Posted: at 3:57 am
Tech companies have spent months hyping the potential of the metaverse, a platform that isn't yet real. Even still, Epic and LEGO are already trying to make sure the concept is safe for kids or at least that's what they claim. The announcement was light on details.
The companies said Thursday that they're entering a "long-term" partnership to make a "family-friendly" metaverse. Lego Group CEO Niels Christiansen said in a statement that "there is huge potential to develop life-long skills such as creativity, collaboration and communication through digital experiences," and the partnership is aimed in that direction.
But the companies' metaverse for kids seems to be in very early stages. It's unclear when it will launch and what the platform will entail, exactly. The three principles driving the project, the companies said, are to prioritize childrens' safety and wellbeing, protect childrens privacy and give children and parents "tools that give them control over their digital experience."
"We are excited to come together to build a space in the metaverse thats fun, entertaining, and made for kids and families," said Epic CEO Tim Sweeney.
While this sounds heartwarming, a metaverse for kids isn't a new concept. The virtual worlds in games like World of Warcraft, Minecraft, Roblox and Epic's own Fortnite provide a glimpse of what the Lego/Epic co-branded metaverse could look like, and could even use existing games as building blocks for a virtual social platform where players can dress up their avatars, buy virtual goods with digital currency and hang out with friends similar to other metaverse concepts, just likely with more parental controls. Sweeney has been bullish on the concept for months, stating at a conference in Seoul in November that "over the coming decades, the metaverse has the potential to become a multi-trillion-dollar part of the world economy," Bloomberg reported.
Epic is also going up against other major gaming companies who have staked their claim in the metaverse, including Pokmon Go creator Niantic, which announced plans to build "real-world metaverse apps in November, and of course Meta, which has pivoted in the last year to make developing the metaverse its entire identity.

Activision Blizzard is giving its contract QA testers full-time jobs and pay raises – Protocol
Posted: at 3:57 am
Activision Blizzard will be moving its 1,000-plus quality assurance testers from contract roles to full-time jobs with additional pay raises, following months of activism and unionization from a group of workers (including QA testers) at Raven Studio, the gaming studio that produces Call of Duty.
The company announced that all of its temporary and contingent quality-assurance testers would be offered full-time contracts with a pay increase to a minimum of $20 per hour. Epic Games, the maker of Fortnite, converted many of its contract QA testers to full-time last month.
"As 'Call of Duty' evolves, we anticipate periods where the workload will fluctuate and exceed our expanded teams bandwidth. With this in mind, were adding extra support for our team from external partners," Josh Taub, Activision Publishing's chief operating officer, wrote in an email to employees.
A group of workers at Raven Software began the process of forming a union after Activision Blizzard laid off some contract QA testers and offered full-time roles to others in a similar move late last year. Those workers staged a walkout and strike and eventually formed one of the first game-workers unions in the U.S., called the Game Workers Alliance, with the Communications Workers of America in January 2022.
Those same unionized workers may not be given the new benefits and pay raises going to other QA testers, according to Communications Workers of America Secretary-Treasurer Sara Steffens. "The company's assertion that the National Labor Relations Act prevents them from including Raven workers is clearly an effort to divide workers and undermine their effort to form a union (Game Workers Alliance - CWA)," she wrote in a statement to Protocol.
Activision Blizzard has been embroiled in months of scandal following California and federal labor suits alleging the company fostered a work environment that led to a frat-house culture of sexual harassment. While the company reached a settlement agreement with the Equal Opportunity and Employment Commission in late March, it still must face ongoing investigations and suits from the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing and former employees and shareholders. The company most recently angered employees by ditching its COVID-19 vaccine mandate. After workers organized a digital walkout, Activision walked back its decision.
Correction: An earlier version of this story misstated when Epic converted QA testers to full-time. This story was updated on April 7, 2022.

In a major announcement, i-PRO APAC Oceania has recently announced a separation from Panasonic i-PRO in the Oceania region and will now trade as an independent entity.
As a new entity, the company looks to accelerate the development of high technology cameras with advanced capabilities built on a platform powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the edge.
They say they will move forward with a more agile, start-up mentality and bring a wider, more diverse range of products to the Oceania market.
Panasonic NZ will continue to be the leading NZ distributor for i-PRO technology and aims to provide continuity for existing customers and resellers with no significant changes.
Marius Van Der Merwe will step into the role of director for the Oceania region, building on his experience as national security solutions manager for Panasonic i-PRO. The move will also see more investment in the Oceania regions with increased reserve in all states.
This is an exciting time for i-PRO in our region. It is essentially a fresh start, and an opportunity to look objectively at the business and create a more effective model, says Van Der Merwe.
The goal is to provide high-level, reliable cameras for a wide array of scenarios at a competitive price and deliver them to the market quickly and effectively.
He also says that the move will create better opportunities for customer engagement and spread company resources around Oceania in a more efficient and effective way.
The new i-PRO APAC Oceania operation will also put more resources in place to better service customers, with pre-and-post sales engineers being added across all territories.
The new entity will also look to increase the number of key integrator partners operating and expand its presence in the channel.
Van Der Merwe also acknowledged the supply chain and customer service struggles relating to past business models and noted that the change will help streamline and simplify a variety of processes with new initiatives and innovations.
We acknowledge that the previous business model was sometimes cumbersome, and as such we are putting pieces in place that allow us to answer questions and deliver solutions in a timely manner, with local support, he says.
The planned opening of our own experience centre will add a lot of resources to our operations also. Customers will get the best of both worlds - the strength and reliability of our high-end cameras, now coupled with an agile local team that is responsive and flexible.
Panasonic NZ senior product sales manager for security Paul Grey says the companys role as NZ distributor will continue to help provide better solutions to customers.
Panasonic NZ Ltd is very excited to be announced as the New Zealand distributor for the i-PRO Brand. We believe that our in-house capabilities in CCTV, software development and network technologies complement the very exciting roadmap of products that I-PRO is producing, he says.

1 in 10 Swiss Citizens Live Abroad, 75% of Them Have Dual Nationality – SchengenVisaInfo.com – SchengenVisaInfo.com

The number of Swiss nationals living abroad increased in 2021 by 1.5 per cent compared to the previous year, recent figures unveiled by Switzerlands Federal Department of Foreign Affairs show.
In a press release issued on Thursday, April 7, the Department announced that about 788,000 Swiss citizens were registered with a Swiss diplomatic representation outside the country, the majority of them in Europe.
Regardless of the continent in which they lived, the majority were aged between 18 and 64. Reflecting Switzerlands multicultural nature, many of them also had more than one nationality, according to the results of the statistics on the Swiss abroad from the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), the press release reveals.
It also points out that the year-on-year increase recorded from 2020 to 2021 was similar to the increase marked from 2019 to 2020, which was 1.4 per cent. In 2021, the highest increase of Swiss citizens living abroad was marked in Europe by 2.2 per cent, followed by Asia with 0.7 per cent, Oceania with 0.6 per cent, and the Americas with 0.2 per cent.
The number of Swiss nationals living in Africa dropped by 0.6 per cent.
Whereas the number of citizens living in the continent of Europe was distributed as follows:
In spite of marking a low increase from 2020 to 2021, the Americas lead the remaining continents when it comes to the number of Swiss citizens living in their territory.
Data show that out of the remaining 286,300 Swiss citizens living abroad, 23 per cent lived in the Americas, 6.8 per cent in Asia, 4,2 per cent in Oceania and another 2.4 per cent in Asia.
The largest communities outside Europe were in the United States, which registered 81,800 people, ahead of Canada (40,800), Australia (25,800) and Israel (22,100). An increase was seen in all of these countries, but the greatest was observed in Israel with three per cent more than in 2020, the Swiss Department of Foreign Affairs reveals.
>> Switzerland Among Best European Countries for Its Living Conditions
Since 2017, the number of Swiss citizens holding more than one nationality has increased by 5.3 per cent, with the highest growth recorded in Asia, 6.7 per cent, followed by Europe with 6.5 per cent.
In 2021 alone, 590,500 Swiss citizens living outside the country had at least one other nationality, which accounts for 75 per cent of the total number of Swiss nationals living abroad.
The highest percentage of Swiss citizens with more than one nationality was found on the American continent (80 per cent). In over half of the American countries in which they lived, the percentage was 75 per cent or more. The highest percentages were seen in South America, particularly in Chile and Argentina, where they were 91.3 per cent and 94.2 per cent respectively, the Department note, adding that on the contrary, the lowest share of Swiss citizens abroad with more than one nationality was recorded in Asia.
The Department further notes that in 2021, 28,700 persons left Switzerland, and 22,300 arrived, which means that net migration was 6,431 persons.
According to the Swiss Federal Statistical Office, Switzerland has a permanent resident population of 8,670,300.

The Global Winners of the 2022 World Press Photo Competition – PetaPixel
Posted: at 3:56 am
The World Press Photo Foundation has announced the 2022 global contest winners that it has recognized as the best photojournalism and documentary photography taken in the last year.
This year, the World Press Photo competition took on a new format that is broken into regions. As explained along with those regional winners in March, the organization found that there was an imbalance in representation among entrants, stories, and winners with the previous contest system. In 2021, only 7% of entrants came from South America, 5% from Southeast Asia and Oceania, and 3% from Africa. The organization felt that this was not representative of the photojournalistic talent around the world, and sought to change its methods to reflect that.
The system was changed to a six-region format Africa, Asia, Europe, North and Central America, South America, and Southeast Asia and Oceania and of the winners from each division, the jury selected on the 24 overall regional winners and from there, selected its four global winners: World Press Photo of the Year, World Press Photo Story of the Year, World Press Photo Long-Term Project Award, and World Press Photo Open Format Award.
These four global winners were chosen from a total of 64,823 photographs and open format entries from 130 countries. Every regional winner of the Contest received a monetary prize of 1,000, inclusion in the annual worldwide exhibition, inclusion in the annual yearbook, publication and a personal profile on the World Press Photo website, promotion on World Press Photo platforms, an invitation to the Winners Program, and a physical award. In addition to their regional prizes, global winners will also receive an additional monetary prize of 5,000 and an additional physical award.
Kamloops Residential School, by Amber Bracken, Canada, for The New York Times

Indigenous Australians strategically burn land in a practice known as cool burning, in which fires move slowly, burn only the undergrowth, and remove the build-up of fuel that feeds bigger blazes. The Nawarddeken people of West Arnhem Land, Australia, have been practicing controlled cool burns for tens of thousands of years and see fire as a tool to manage their 1.39 million hectare homeland. Warddeken rangers combine traditional knowledge with contemporary technologies to prevent wildfires, thereby decreasing climate-heating CO2.
Amazonian Dystopia, Lalo de Almeida, Brazil, for Folha de So Paulo/Panos Pictures
The Amazon rainforest is under great threat, as deforestation, mining, infrastructural development and exploitation of other natural resources gain momentum under President Jair Bolsonaros environmentally regressive policies. Since 2019, devastation of the Brazilian Amazon has been running at its fastest pace in a decade. An area of extraordinary biodiversity, the Amazon is also home to more than 350 different Indigenous groups. The exploitation of the Amazon has a number of social impacts, particularly on Indigenous communities who are forced to deal with significant degradation of their environment, as well as their way of life.

In a journey to their ancestral village of Une, Cundinamarca, Colombia, Romero explores forgotten memories of the land and crops and learns about her grandfather and great-grandmother who were seed guardians and cultivated several potato varieties, only two of which still mainly exist.
