‘Space centre’ coming to the north to train astronauts, inspire youth in STEM – CTV News Northern Ontario

Posted: February 24, 2022 at 2:44 am

Cochrane-based Stardust Technologies is developing what they hope will be a world-renowned space centre in northern Ontario, dedicated to training astronauts for space travel, inspiring youth to pursue careers in the sciences and attracting more tech companies to the region.

Dubbed the Stardust Space Centre, CEO Jason Michaud said the goal is to create a facility that brings international experts together with a common goal of improving astronauts' experiences as they venture into the cosmos.

"If we want to make space accessible for everyone, it starts with breaking the borders and just all collaborating as one big family and setting all of our differences aside," said Michaud, who has been experimenting with virtual reality technology as a way to improve astronauts' mental health during space missions.

"If humanity wants to thrive up there, we need empathy ... otherwise, we're not going to survive in space."

Stardust is partnering with unannounced government agencies, as well as aerospace companies and universities in Canada and abroad, to make the space centre possible.

Michaud invited around 20 collaborators and local officials to view the site of the planned facility Saturday, complete with a celebratory miniature rocket launch, snowshoeing and a tour of the community during its winter carnival weekend.

Michaud said the Stardust Space Centre will span more than 115 acres and include several inflatable domes.

Some domes will house training facilities to perform weeks or even months of isolation simulations that attempt to mimic the sensation of being on a space mission, perhaps on a short jaunt to the International Space Stationor even voyage to Mars.

Those Earth-bound simulations are called 'analog missions' and a journalist and filmmaker who participates in those missions as an 'analog astronaut' around the world told CTV there is exciting potential for this type of facility.

"One of the things that we're lacking is spaces where we can emulate the isolation conditions that we are actually going to be facing in those spacecrafts," said P.J. Marcelino, who worked with Stardust on a recent analog mission focusing on mental health during long-range space travel.

"There's a real potential to attract actual astronauts to train in this kind of station, for what they're going to be facing in the next coming years."

Marcelino said the Stardust Space Centre will allow for year-round missions in a climate that would be similar to what astronauts may face on Earth's nearest neighbour planet.

Michaud said other domes in the facility will house the Stardust Institute of Technology, which will give youth a chance to learn skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in their own communities.

The University of Waterloo, Western University and University of Technology Sydney in Australia are among the academic partners that will help train local youthplus local First Nations and Indigenous agencies will work with the centre to give Indigenous youth the chance to get into STEM.

"It's really about creating this future, where they can grow and learn and collaborate ... we really just want to inspire them," said Michaud.

"To show these kids that there are different opportunities ... and just show them that they can remain in the north and have these great experiences."

That's a mentality that fuelled Stardust's collaboration with Concordia University's student-run Space Concordia group in Montreal.

Two students who attended the announcement said they are working on the largest rocket launch in the country since the late 1990s and are working with Stardust on the project. They said exposing youth to the possibilities of careers in STEM is a passion of theirs that they hope to bring to northern Ontario.

"It's always great getting Canadians more and more involved with space, especially since we've clearly have a talent for it," said Concordia rocket science student Oleg Khalimonov.

"We're planning on doing a lot of outreach events with (Stardust) to do with rockets."

University partners brought model rockets and interactive robotics to Cochrane for a 'Rockets on Ice' event on Sunday, as an outreach initiative to get the community excited for the launch of the space centre sometime this year.

Michaud's other plan for his space centre is to house the Stardust Innovation Hub, an incubator for entrepreneurs to launch a STEM-related business, attract investment from existing companies and encourage innovation in the industry.

The goal is to develop a robust STEM industry in the north. Cochrane Mayor Denis Clement expressed his excitement for the economic potential the hub and the space centre as a whole can bring to the area.

The plan is to have some of the space centre's operations active by the summer and Michaud said he wants this to foster a stronger international community of space professionals.

"We need to collaborate with a lot of people to make stuff happen," Michaud said.

"We've got to stop thinking in our small mindset that we're in competition, we're not. We can all benefit each other and thrive together as humans."

Betting on these 5 stocks in realty and cement sectors: Siddhartha Khemka – Economic Times

Posted: at 2:44 am

Our preferred picks within the real estate space from our coverage stocks universe are Macrotech followed by Oberoi Realty, says Siddhartha Khemka, Head of Retail Research, MOFSL.Is there merit in a higher allocation to Kotak and HDFC Bank given their underperformance year to date and in the previous year as well? Do you think they have a higher chance at a better recovery? The private banking space in the December quarter has reported a strong growth in net profit of almost 35% with loan growth picking up on a quarter on quarter basis. That was driven by the corporate portfolios. In the private space, Kotak Mahindra Bank and HDFC Bank had underperformed the larger corporate banks like ICICI Bank, SBI and Axis Bank for quite a long time.

If you look at the overall market structure, there is some kind of rotation. We have seen some kind of fatigue coming into the stocks like ICICI and SBI which ran up sharply over the last one-one and a half years. Incrementally people are looking at Kotak and HDFC Bank with respect to improvement in growth, improvement in their financial numbers and comparing that with the valuation comfort that they are providing. Nonetheless, our view still remains that one should overall look at the large corporate banks like ICICI Bank and SBI, which would remain our top picks despite the kind of interest that we are seeing in HDFC and Kotak.

What is the outlook when it comes to the open up trade? Do you believe that after being plagued by the Covid crisis for quite some time, as things are returning to normalcy, there is quite a bit of potential be it hotel stocks, aviation, multiplex stocks, restaurants and the like?If you look at the reopening trade that we have seen last year as well post the pandemic getting over and the restrictions being gradually easing off, there is a rush towards these kinds of sectors as they have been badly hit at the times of the lockdowns and restrictions. But again, one cannot take a blanket approach towards these players sectors like aviation, although opening up of the international routes is positive.

On the other side, we have currency as well as the crude oil price headwinds and one needs to be selective. Multiplexes are definitely looking good. Some of the other leisure entertainment space, travel segments are definitely worth looking at at this current juncture, especially as globally, there are countries which are saying that now Covid is no longer a pandemic and is a normal course of disease which one needs to get through.

The restrictions of the tests are being removed from a lot of countries as well. In India also, domestic travel no longer needs to show test certificates and all those things. It is a positive development for the sectors which have been impacted pretty heavily in the last two years, if we do not see any return of the Covid restrictions, these companies will do well but one needs to be very selective in the broader unlocking theme.

Do you believe the time is right now for a lot of these real estate counters which had come under acute pressure now to see a decisive bounce back?On the overall real estate pack, we have been quite positive for the last couple of months. Last year, there has been a huge increase in demand especially on the residential side and that has helped the large real estate players to clear off the inventories, improve cash flows and some of them have even raised cash from the market to strengthen their balance sheet going forward.

Real estate stocks like Sobha, Oberoi Realty, Prestige Estates are still holding on to gains of around 4% to 5%. Would you like to play this theme with the real estate stocks itself or would you like to broaden it a bit to get into the building material or the plywoods or the pipes. of the world? If you look at the overall real estate space, the cycle is turning after almost 10-12 years and in the previous cycle, there were a lot of unorganised players. In the last 10 years, we have seen consolidation with smaller players getting out or getting merged with larger players. The regulatory environment has improved a lot be it RERA, be it the GST. , that has only helped the larger organised nationalised players to gain market share and finally post pandemic because of the lower interest rates and the resultant improvement in demand.

People are spending more time at home, requiring larger homes and we see that the overall real estate cycle is improving and just starting off. Our preferred players would be to play directly with the real estate companies. The balance sheets have improved over the last couple of years. The inventory levels have come down and that makes them pretty attractive at this current juncture.

Our preferred picks within the real estate space from our coverage stocks universe are Macrotech followed by Oberoi Realty. To play the real estate indirectly, we like the cement sector which is also a play on infrastructure spend. We recently had the Budget where the capex theme from the government continued for the second year in a row. We believe that cement is facing several headwinds in terms of a little bit of demand slowdown as well as higher raw material cost leading to margin pressure. But this space can benefit from the growth and increasing demand in the real estate and infra space. We like UltraTech among largecap names and JK Cement and Birla Corp within the midcap space.

When it comes to the cement basket, there are concerns regarding supply as well as cost. Do you think it has already been factored into the price? The overall cement space has faced major headwinds on the cost inflation side and that has impacted margins. The overall trend, the longer term view that we have is that some of these cost pressures as well as lower volumes are already there in the price. For this year, the Budget is capex friendly. We have got the first monsoon estimates from Skymet which is again positive.

The rural segment has been subdued and has impacted not only cement but a lot of other sectors like two-wheelers, tractors and FMCG space and is also having an impact on the cement sector. But with the kind of spending and now with the elections in some of these larger states getting over, the demand should recover and that should help the space come back on its feet.

They have been unable to take price hikes but that should follow with the construction season beginning and improving demand from the real estate and infra space. A lot is already there in the price and one should look selectively at some of the cement stocks like UltraTech which is our top pick in the large cap space and JK Cement and Birla Corp in the midcap space.

ANALYSIS | Ukraine crisis: Whats really behind Putins deployment of peacekeeping troops? – News24

Posted: at 2:42 am

Russia's President Vladimir Putin signed decrees to recognize independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk. Moscow ordered troops into these areas on Monday, escalating the prospect of outright war between Russia and Ukraine.

Alexei Nikolsky/TASS via Getty Images

No matter how desperately one might long for a silver lining in the current situation, the fact remains that Russias recognition of the two breakaway republics is yet another major violation of international law, writesStefan Wolff and Tatyana Malyarenko.

Vladimir Putins recognition of the independence of the two breakaway republics of Donetsk and Luhansk followed a surreal live broadcast of a security council meeting in the Kremlin. Sitting facing the 13-member council, Putin cajoled and argued as, one by one, his most senior officials including Dmitry Medvedev, a former president and prime minister, and the countrys foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov took to the lectern to provide their boss with "reasons" for the formal recognition of the two republics in the countrys east as independent states.

He followed this decision by authorising Russian troops to cross into the republics in a "peacekeeping" capacity. It was also reported that the recognition treaties give Russia the right to establish military camps there.

Blaming the decision entirely on Ukraine and those governments in the west above all the United States which "control" Ukraine, Putin questioned more than once the very legitimacy of the existence Ukraine as a nation-state. He put forward an argument that was very similar in language to an essay he published on the Kremlins website in July 2021, On the Historical Unity of Russians and Ukrainians.

Putin portrayed recognition as a decisive step by a true "great power" asserting its interests and protecting vulnerable "kin" communities. But the gambit raises more questions than it answers. The most obvious among them is whether this is the end of the current crisis, or at least the beginning of the end of it.

An optimistic reading would be that the recognition offers a way out for everyone. Putin saves face by humiliating Ukraine and the west but avoids full-scale war and the human and economic costs that would impose on Russia.

If you take this at face value that Putin is only interested in protecting the rights of the two pro-Russian republics then accepting recognition would spare Ukraine a major military confrontation with Russia. It would also mean that Kyiv would avoid the domestic political difficulties and socio-economic costs that an implementation of the deeply unpopular 2015 Minsk agreement would mean for the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyi and his government.

As in Georgia after the invasion of 2008 and with Crimea after its annexation by Russia in 2014 recognition could lead to a gradual stabilisation in the regions. Neither side has to argue about the implementation of the Minsk agreement anymore. The deadlock that had been reached in this process would no longer constitute a source of tension and mutual recrimination.

But this is a very optimistic assumption. It would be a mistaken reading of perhaps the most dangerous moment of European and global security since the end of the cold war.

No matter how desperately one might long for a silver lining in the current situation, the fact remains that Russias recognition of the two breakaway republics is yet another major violation of international law. Western sanctions are now being introduced and may include full and most punitive measures. Previous disagreements between the EU, US and UK on the scale of sanctions seem to have been overcome.

Russian actions have, if anything, strengthened western resolve, as is clear from the immediate responses from countries like the UK and Germany, which has announced it wont certify Russias Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

The current crisis is about more than the status of certain areas of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, as the territories are referred to in the Minsk agreement. It does not resolve the broader tensions between Russia and the west over the future European security order.

It is obvious that Putin has become convinced that the continuing status of Donetsk and Luhansk as de facto states within Ukraine and thus as an instrument of leverage over Ukraine and, by extension, over its western partners had ceased to serve Russias purposes. But his hour-long televised speech has given little cause for optimism that their recognition has put an end to the Ukrainian issue.

Significantly, Putins speech focused much more on the wider problems of Russian-Ukrainian relations than the problem of the two Donbas republics. The Russian president reiterated a much broader agenda that links the situation in Ukraine clearly to his overall challenge to the international order. Various snippets are worth looking at more closely in this regard.

According to Putin, Ukraine as a result of Soviet boundary drawing in the 1920s, 1940s and 1950s became an artificial territorial construct. After the collapse of the USSR, it ended up with "historically Russian territories" inhabited by ethnic Russians whose rights are violated in contemporary Ukraine.

Putin also asserted that these violations have in large part been due to Ukraine being a failed state in which decisions are being made by corrupt authorities that are under the control of "western capitals". But, perhaps most importantly, he repeated that Ukraine, by moving closer to Nato, has already created threats to Russia to which Russia must respond.

Taken together with the signing and immediate ratification of "friendship treaties"between Russia and the now recognised breakaway republics and the decision to move Russian troops into the newly recognised republics, Putins recognition speech and its tone make it much more likely, therefore, that this is at best a brief interlude in a continuing and deepening crisis.

More realistically, the recognition and the actions taken in its immediate aftermath signal a dramatic escalation on the part of Russia. Putins track record since 2008 should not leave anyone in doubt about the fact that this crisis is far from over.

The 10 Most Annoying, Overused Types Of Sportsbook Tweets – US Bets

Posted: at 2:41 am

Whatever the original hopes and dreams for social media might have been a place to connect, share, amuse, and perhaps distract from heavy issues it has all gone tragically awry. Disinformation, division, and disrespect will, unfortunately, be central to the legacy of Facebook, Twitter, and most of the other apps.

Every company trying to connect with the public needs to have a social media presence, however, and comparatively speaking, the online sportsbook accounts on Twitter are relatively harmless. Theyre not trying to sow discord or uproot democracy, as far as we can tell. Sometimes the tweets are funny, and for customers who use the sportsbooks, theyre often informative in terms of knowing what promos and boosts are available on a given day.

But they can also be incredibly annoying especially if you follow every major mobile sportsbook and begin to notice that there are certain Twitter tropes nearly all of them engage in. What follows is a countdown of the 10 most irksome types of sportsbook tweets, starting with the mildly irritating and overdone and building to the truly egregious and infuriating.

This is an all-but-necessary business practice and it can at times be informative, hence its appearance at the bottom of the top 10. Parlays are where the sportsbooks clean up. The hold percentage is three to four times as high as it is on straight bets. So it makes perfect sense that books want to promote winning parlays and encourage bettors to chase that (usually unattainable) dream. They all do it, from DraftKings to FanDuel to Caesars and the rest, and they often cant help but include the emoji described as money-mouth face:

Its fairly inoffensive, and sometimes a parlay hits thats so crazy that us journalists spin the tweets into an article, but at the same time, these tweets are a major jealousy trigger for the countless sports gamblers whove never seen one of their longshot parlays come in.

Every day, most of the sportsbooks offer a few odds boosts, and when one comes in, they celebrate it. Two problems: If you didnt bet it, you feel moderately bitter; if you did bet it, sure, you won money, but theres no pride in knowing you tailed a bet the sportsbook came up with. (And rarely do the sportsbooks tweet about it when their boost whiffs.)

Heres a recent example, complete with that money-mouth face again:

Yeah, it sucks when football season ends or when the NBA has a few days off for the all-star break. But its also OK to take a night off from betting every once in a while. In fact, its unhealthy not to step back on occasion. Anyway, this type of sportsbook tweet is innocent and amusing enough, but boy oh boy do all the social media managers seem to share a brain with these.

And lets acknowledge the bizarro cousin of the sad theres nothing to bet tweet, the uplifting happy theres something to bet post:

These take a few different forms, but what they all have in common is the risk of causing emotional distress for the bettor reading the tweet. Maybe youre on the other side of the bet and feeling bummed. Or youre on the right side of the bet, but it isnt over yet and your joy (and bankroll) could be fleeting.

Anyway, this is the classic sort of tweet thats playful and fun in theory, but carries a high likelihood of pissing people off.

Pretty much self-explanatory here. These GIFs were amusing the first 14,000 times you saw them, but maybe its time for Peele and Denzel to give way to a new generation of anxiety-oriented visuals.

This is one that can be useful for gambling reporters who may be inclined to write about particularly noteworthy wagers, but that usefulness is overruled for most folks by the way it rubs in that there are people out there who have a lot more money available to risk than you do.

By the way, while the FanDuel and BetMGM social teams were paying close attention in class, it appears the DraftKings tweeters were dozing off and missed the lesson about using the phrase big bet alert.

For Scott Van Pelt, bad beats equal great content. But for a bettor, is there anything worse than having what appeared to be the right side of a wager, only for it turn into the wrong side at the last second and seeing the sportsbook where you just lost money leaning into your pain?

If you work in social media, youre incentivized to come up with ways to get people to not just view a tweet or like a tweet, but respond to it, quote-tweet it, etc. And in a sense, the open-ended question to stimulate carefree discussion is perhaps emblematic of the pure spirit with which social networks were conceived.

But its also kinda pathetic to be fishing this hard for a response.

This is the desperately seeking engagement category dragged through a river of sewage. If these tweets dont annoy you, you might just need a complete personality overhaul.

This is the absolute worst, the nut low of sportsbook Twitter. These tweets are a complete unforced error by the operators and their social media teams, as they act as a kick in the gonads to any bettor who had a losing night.

Negative bonus points for using the money-mouth face emoji, obviously.

Dave Portnoy: DraftKings And Penn National Should Merge Sportsbooks – US Bets

Posted: at 2:41 am

There has been a lot of chatter about consolidation in the sportsbook industry, but the chatter just put forward by Dave Portnoy, the face of Barstool Sportsbook well, it would shake the foundations of American sports betting.

In short: Portnoy believes Barstool Sportsbook, which is owned by Penn National Gaming, would be an ideal merger with DraftKings. (Penn National is also part-owner of Portnoys media site, Barstool Sports, with plans to become full owner.)

Like from and Im not involved in this I dont think there can be a more obvious synergy than between us and DraftKings, Portnoy said Tuesday on the latest edition of The Dave Portnoy Show with Eddie & Co. I think its game over if we merged. Honestly. I think that.

Im not involved in that, but if I looked around and my brains going, DraftKings, Barstool they have very good tech, they have the market share, they have to spend a ton, and theyre spending all this on marketing we could just erase that. All right, combine, were your marketing. I think its a total game changer. Who knows? Thats just me with no knowledge, no nothing, but to me its like, Oh my god, they have what we need, we have what they need, bang. Who knows?

Portnoys comments came during discussion of the gambling industry on his podcast with his co-host, Chicago Eddie.

It all started when Eddie asked Portnoy about DraftKings recent quarterly earnings report, a report that Wall Street didnt take kindly to.

You cant spend the money in this industry that is being spent on advertising and not get your f***ing ass kicked, Portnoy said. We dont do it, its a different model. DraftKings is saying, This is expected and just wait, because eventually companies will disappear and well have market share that is what theyre saying. They keep pushing the dates back [for achieving profitability].

Its just a brutal industry, and its hard to make money, and its hard to make money again, broken record when you have to spend so much to acquire your customers, Portnoy continued.

Notable: Before signing a deal to partner with Penn National, Portnoy had negotiations to team up with DraftKings, which he discussed during a Twitter Spaces conversation with Roundhill Investments last year. He did note, however, that Penn National was the only company to come forward with a solid offer.

DraftKings declined comment Wednesday on Portnoys comment/trial balloon/outrageous word salad, and emails to Penn National were not returned as of publication.

Could the reigning NFL MVP be on his way to Denver? The already strong odds are improving, according to one sportsbook.

Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers has +200 odds meaning a $100 bet would win $200 to be a part of the Broncos roster in Week 1, according to MaximBet. Denver is listed as the oddsmakers top landing spot if he leaves Green Bay.

The latest odds are an improvement over last week when MaximBet put Rodgers at +400 to go to the Broncos.

Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay (both at +600) have the next best odds, followed by San San Francisco (+700), Indianapolis (+1,000) and Minnesota (+1,200).

More speculation arose on Rodgers future Monday night after the 38-year-old Packers star posted a message on Instagram thanking teammates and coaches.

Meanwhile, MaximBet also released odds as to who will take the Packers first snap in Week 1. Green Bay backup Jordan Love (+200) is the favorite, ahead of 49ers Jimmy Garoppolo (+500), Seahawks Russell Wilson (+600), any rookie quarterback (+800) and Titans Ryan Tannehill (+800). Wisconsin signs sports betting compact with Potawatomis; sportsbook to open by the end of 2022 – Yogonet International

Posted: at 2:41 am

Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers has signed a new compact allowing sports betting at the Forest County Potawatomis tribal casinos. The deal was announced by both the governors office and tribal Chairman Ned Daniels Jr. through press statements released on Friday.

The amendment to the already existing gaming deal, in addition to now allowing for event wagering, also extends the compact to 2061. It is, however, still subject to US Department of Interior approval, and is set to undergo a 45-day review.

We appreciate Governor Evers and his administration working with us in a government-to-government manner to provide our tribe the tools needed to compete in the marketplace and giving us the business certainty to continue our investments in Milwaukee and throughout the state, Daniels said in a statement.

The compact amendment allows sports betting at the tribes two casinos in the Menomonee Valley and Forest County. The tribal nation expects to open a sportsbook facility at its Potawatomi Hotel and Casino in Milwaukee by the end of the year.

The compact also allows event wagering on non-sports events. The new operation will be overseen by the state Department of Administrations Office of Indian Gaming and Regulatory Compliance. The agency, which is tasked with ensuring regulatory compliance and the integrity of event wagering, is set to conduct on-site audits to that end.

I am glad for the good work of Chairman Daniels, the Forest County Potawatomi, and the folks at the Department of Administration to get this done so folks can enjoy sports and other event wagering in our state while benefiting the Tribes economic growth, Gov. Evers said.

The introduction of this new profitable vertical could provide the tribe a much-needed help as revenue at the Potawatomi Hotel & Casino faced a steep decline amid the Covid-19 pandemic. The casino posted $293 million during the 12-month period ended June 30, 28% below 2019, according to Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

The new compact follows similar amendments signed with the Oneida Nation in July last year, and the St. Croix Chippewa in December. The new market launched in November 2021, at the Oneida Casino Main-Airport location, in Green Bay.

In addition to wagering on the states three pro sports teams -the Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Bucks and Milwaukee Brewers-, Wisconsin bettors can also gamble on other non-sporting events, such as the Oscars. College sports are included in the offering, except for Wisconsin college sports. Mobile wagering is not permitted under current compacts.

NBA predictions 2022: Western conference picks, betting odds, teams win totals at All-Star break – DraftKings Nation

Posted: at 2:41 am

With NBA All-Star Weekend in the rearview mirror, it is a good time to check out the latest Western Conference odds. Heading into this season, the Los Angeles Lakers were the odds-on favorite (+200) to win the Western Conference on DraftKings Sportsbook.

However, the market has changed a lot since October, as the Suns are the favorite (+170), despite them not having All-star point guard Chris Paul for 6-8 weeks. The Golden State Warriors have the second-best odds (+200), while the Utah Jazz have the third-best odds (+650). Below well look at how the current West odds and give our best bet on who will win the conference.

Phoenix Suns: +180Golden State Warriors: +185Utah Jazz: +650Memphis Grizzlies: +1100Denver Nuggets: +1500Los Angeles Lakers: +1800Dallas Mavericks: +1800Los Angeles Clippers: +3000Minnesota Timberwolves: +6000New Orleans Pelicans: +20000

The Suns have shown this season that their NBA Finals run last season was not a fluke and that they are serious contender for the title again. Phoenix has the best record in the NBA at 48-10. However, the Warriors, who just got Klay Thompson back in January, are still lurking and in striking distance to take that top spot in West.

But even if they cant get the top seed, Golden State will be a tough team to play in a seven-game series in the playoff. On the other end of the spectrum, the Lakers went from the odds on favorite to the conference to now having 18-1 odds. Los Angeles seemed like a lock to be to win the West with LeBron James, Russell Westbrook, and Anthony Davis. But Westbrook has struggled with the Lakers, while Davis has been battling injury. The only constant has been a 37-year-old James, who has not slowed down yet this season.

I know that the Suns have been the best team in the West and NBA this season. However, it seems like people have forgotten about how dominant the Warriors can be when they are healthy and clicking on all cylinders. Golden State in the playoffs with their core is a scary sight and something that nobody wants to see.

Are CBD Oil Benefits Too Good to be True? – We Heart

Posted: at 2:36 am

Its only been a few years since CBD became a household name. At the time, it faced three significant obstacles. The first was scepticism, and rightfully so. Many supplement vendors and enthusiasts made several health claims before preliminary research had a chance to address them. Complicating matters was the lack of quality control, which fortunately improved as companies became more competitive.

CBDs second barrier was its stigma. CBD comes from the cannabis plant (Cannabis sativa L.), often used interchangeably with marijuana (cannabis exceeding 0.3% THC). But with cannabidiol reaching mainstream use, most people now understand that hemp CBD (cannabis with less than 0.3% THC) isnt intoxicating.

Finally, there wasand still isa regulatory concern. While some states, like New York, will regulate the hemp CBD industry following legalisation, these supplements are still unregulated at a federal level. Consequently, the medical and scientific communities are hesitant to give CBD its due credit.

So are CBD oil benefits too good to be true, or are the naysayers right? The simple answer is yes and no. Lets see what the long answer tells us.

In most cases, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) frowns on CBD supplements. However, they broke new ground in 2018 when they approved Epidiolex the first prescription CBD drug.

The approval came on the heels of several studies showing promise that CBD can treat severe intractable childhood epilepsy.

Lennox Gastaut Syndrome and Dravet Syndrome are severe seizure disorders that affect very young children. In some cases, these patients suffer from dozens of seizures per day. Some report up to 100.

Having so many seizures in such a short time can cause brain damage over time. It also leaves patients virtually bedridden and unable to live normal lives.

However, patients who consumed CBD saw a dramatic reduction in seizure frequency, while a lucky few became seizure-free.

If you research CBDs benefits, you may notice epilepsy or seizures among a brief point-form list. Although we know CBD does treat certain types of epilepsy, we have no evidence suggesting it can help with the many other, more common, seizure disorders.

Its also important to mention that CBD may interact negatively with many medications, including those used to control epilepsy.

Many people who try CBD dont have a good experience. This could happen for several reasons, but most of them boil down to quality. Premium CBD oil should be third party tested, cleanly extracted, and full of beneficial compounds, like terpenes and other cannabinoids.

If youre looking for a good CBD product and dont know where to start, our 2022 review of the 10 best CBD oils will put you on the right track.

Anecdotal and some preliminary evidence suggestsoften stronglythat CBD may help alleviate several symptoms. However, these havent received the same clinical trials that gave us Epidiolex, so evidence is preliminary at best.

Nonetheless, cell, animal, and some small human trials paint a fairly positive picture. So far, we have reason to believe CBD can help with:

Pain Anxiety Inflammation Gastrointestinal issues Migraine Nausea Appetite

These are just a handful of reported CBD benefits. The list is much more extensive, which leads us to our next point.

When CBD first made a name for itself, users implied that it was essentially a cure-all. People claimed it could fix everything from acne to cancer.

Of course, such claims arent substantiated beyond preliminary studies. But back then, these alleged benefits were anecdotal. Still, it looked good from a marketing standpoint, so unscrupulous vendors didnt blink at cashing in.

The FDA isnt keen on these practices. After examining several CBD products, they found that the majority had serious discrepancies in CBD and THC content, among other concerns.

Between 2014 and 2019, the FDA checked 147 CBD products, noticing inaccuracies if not deliberate falsehoods for cannabinoid content. In some cases, THC levels werent even mentioned on the labels.

By this point, however, people everywhere thought CBD was the ultimate medicine. As a result, its difficult to determine even today what role the placebo effect plays in CBDs efficacy.

Yes, CBD works. In some cases. However, we have no proof that CBD conclusively works for other reported symptoms or conditions; severe epilepsy being the exception.

That being said, theres no harm in trying CBD under the guidance of a health professional. Its also no substitute for established medical treatment.

The safest way to approach CBD is with cautious optimism. In time, well have some definitive answers regarding CBDs other reported benefits.
