Fields Of Dreams: how the original festivals shaped the future of rock music – Louder

Posted: February 17, 2022 at 8:36 am

Almost by the time the flames had gone out on his mangled Stratocaster and the wreckage had stopped smouldering, Jimi Hendrixs performance at the Monterey festival in California in June 1967 had transformed his profile in the US from little more than an underground figure with a still-to-be proved reputation filtering over from Britain, into a full-blown supernova superstar.

With that one homecoming performance in which he pulled out all the stops (and a can of lighter fuel with which he anointed his sacrificial Strat), Hendrix had arrived. So too had the popular music festival and its ability to give artists unprecedented exposure for one show, and in some cases, give them their big break.

In the late 60s, music had not yet become the all-pervasive global entertainment that it is today, and had yet to be swallowed up by the dollar-driven industry behemoth. Apart from the music in the charts, the way music fans heard about bands/artists (and listened to music) was very different. Even The BBC's Radio One was still in the flush of youth. Only John Peels show, Mike Ravens Saturday evening R&B show and a handful of other radio shows provided an outlet for anything that wasnt strictly mass appeal.

There were three or four weekly music papers; monthly music-dedicated magazines were still years away, other magazines coverage of even mainstream music was perfunctory, and daily papers coverage would be either high-brow (the broadsheets) or hung on a scandal or a genuine hard-news angle. Unless you lived in London (and often even if you did), it wasnt unusual to have to order an album from your local record shop (usually the only one in town) and then wait weeks for it to arrive. Compared to today, non- commercial rock was an underground phenomenon.

The majority of these relatively unknown, underground bands in the UK who spent most of their lives on the road were blues/blues rock/R&B bands. Many of them routinely gigged for years before they even got a sniff of a record deal or saw inside a studio, traversing the country in van and regularly playing 200, 300 or more gigs a year, often to audiences of a few dozen.

No wonder, then, that the music festivals that sprang up in the 60s played such an important role in giving up-and-coming or even completely new bands the kind of exposure and resulting word-of-mouth seal of approval from playing one short set that they would otherwise have to gig around the country for months to get.

To the extent that a single festival appearance could tip the balance and lift a band out of cult following half-light into the glare of commercial and critical success. Of course, it helped that back then virtual unknowns were regularly invited on to festival bills (and without the big-bucks buy-on).

In Britain, the National Jazz & Blues Festival which ran throughout the 60s at a number of sites, then from 1970 became better known as the Reading Festival when it took up residence in the town was particularly important to British blues rock bands.

Over the years it hosted names artists like The Yardbirds, The Who, Cream, Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, Small Faces, Jethro Tull, The Nice, Family, Fleetwood Mac, John Mayall, Jeff Beck, Pink Floyd, Fairport Convention, Arthur Brown, Tyrannosaurus Rex and Joe Cocker, along with a whole host of smaller bands, many of which got their big breaks at these festivals. Audience acclaim often lead to a hugely important residency at the prestigious Marquee club in London; some even got a record deal as a direct result of their appearance.

One band that certainly felt the festival effect was Peter Greens Fleetwood Mac (as they were originally called). Having got a full line-up together only a month before, the bands first ever gig was in front of 30,000 people at the National Jazz & Blues Festival in 1967, held in Windsor.

From that brief, 20-minute set, word of mouth would certainly have boosted sales of their debut album, released less than six months later. It reached No.4 in the UK a remarkable achievement for a blues album, and a debut at that. Fleetwood Mac quickly established themselves as arguably the best British blues band of the era.

Also playing at the 1967 Windsor Festival (the final day headlined by Cream) and making their debut with a new line-up were Chicken Shack led by guitarist Stan Webb. From an acclaimed and profile-raising set, they were able to gig intensively and extensively for months afterwards, and became one of the bigger names on the UK blues circuit. They were soon signed to pioneering and hugely important British blues label Blue Horizon (also the home of Fleetwood Mac), and the following July released their first album (it reached No.12).

Ten Years After, already in the ascendancy due mainly to guitarist Alvin Lees lightning-fast licks, perhaps didnt establish themselves at that landmark festival in Windsor in 1967, but it was there that they consolidated their reputation as one of Britains premier blues rock bands. Cocked and loaded following a residency at the Marquee, they fairly stole the show, according to music weekly Record Mirror.

Which would have been no mean feat for a band still without a record deal, and on a day that also had Pink Floyd on the bill. Within months Ten Years After released their debut album. Two years later, following a string of US festival shows, the band floored half a million people with an incendiary display, crowned by a spun-out Goin Home, that was one of the highlights of the legendary Woodstock festival in 1969. With their Woodstock performance, Ten Years After effectively cracked America .

Woodstock was also the launch pad for the then virtually unknown Santana, whose intoxicating show-stopping performance went into orbit and certainly helped propel their Latin-rock fusion debut album to the dizzy heights of No.4 in the US five months later.

By the end of the 60s, in just three or four years and, poignantly, post- Woodstock the nature of festivals had changed dramatically. The 1969 Bath festival, with Led Zeppelin on the bill along with the likes of Deep Blues Band, Roy Harper, Chicken Shack, John Mayall and Fleetwood Mac (a very bluesy, very British affair), drew 12,000 people.

The 1970 Bath festivals big-name, American- loaded bill included The Byrds, Johnny Winter, Jefferson Airplane, Frank Zappa, Country Joe, Santana, Canned Heat, Pink Floyd and The Moody Blues. As the sun set behind the stage on the Sunday, show-stealers Led Zeppelin played to a crowd of 150,000. No one on this bill was looking for a big break or even a record deal.

Similarly, where the 1969 Isle Of Wight Festival bill was still packed with British blues-based bands for whom it could be their springboard to greater heights (Edgar Broughton Band, Free, Aynsley Dunbar, Blodwyn Pig, Mighty Baby) alongside stars The Who and Bob Dylan, the following years huge blockbuster (with Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, The Who, Joni Mitchell, John Sebastian) was a very different beast both musically and in terms of scale.

On the Monday morning of September 1, 1970, Ron Foulk, promoter of the Isle Of Wight festival, announced: This is the last festival. Enough is enough. It began as a beautiful dream but it has got out of control and become a monster.

He was actually talking about the serious crowd trouble that plagued the island that year. But he could just as easily have been talking about the dreams of so many small-time, unknown bands who were once able to look to the summer and think: This year maybe it will be our turn..."

UNIQ TMS aims to help ease supply chain woes – The Trucker

Posted: at 8:35 am

CHICAGO UNIQ TMS is helping freight and logistics companies ease supply chain woes by getting paid faster with their new driver-facing app, UNIQ Driver.

Until now, companies were using patch-work apps for document transfers, but they did not directly integrate with industry payment and processing systems, a news release stated. This meant that companies often waited weeks to get paid, rather than being able to invoice and collect payment efficiently. These communication delays between drivers on the road and their home office can add up to thousands of dollars in lost revenue annually, compounding the cash flow problems that some trucking companies face.

MIT researchers told Congress in November 2021 that trucking fleets are losing 40% of their driving, or earning, hours every day. Outdated modes of communication are one of the many hidden causes of trucking company revenue loss.

The UNIQ Driver App helps companies save time and accurately navigate hours of service within FMCSA guidelines, according to the news release.

Drivers shouldnt be waiting around for the next load and dispatchers shouldnt have to scroll through multiple windows to find an available driver to take a load, Logistics Technology AdvisorTerry Ivanovsaid. Our app makes the process happen in minutes, not hours.

With the UNIQ Driver App, dispatchers and drivers can get loads scheduled and planned in a fraction of the time.

Heres how:

The UNIQ Driver app is a free extension of the UNIQ TMS platform.

UNIQ TMS is a user-friendly transportation management system that helps companies make better decisions and manage their business in less time, the news release stated. UNIQ TMS allows trucking and logistics companies to manage everything all in one place, including load planning, accounting, safety, maintenance, and driver records with powerful, insightful reporting.

We believe that technology should make your life easier, saidTerry Ivanov. Thats why we help you along the way, simplifying the implementation process.

Algorithm marks the spot: making brain stimulation more reliable – Newswise

Posted: at 8:35 am

Newswise Medical practitioners have used transcranial magnetic brain stimulation (TMS) for years to treat brain disorders like chronic pain and depression, yet much of the treatments success has relied on the hands operating the manual device. To bring a better quality of life to more patients, a research team led by Aalto University in Finland has developed a way to quickly find the optimal stimulation for any individual. The results are now published online in Brain Stimulation, the leading journal in the field.

TMS works by sending magnetic pulses to the brain with a coil placed on the head. These repeated pulses, which feel like light taps on the head, can alter how neurons communicateessentially augmenting or decreasing the efficacy of how they talk to one another. Many brain disorders, like stroke and depression, are associated with over- or underactivity of some parts of the brain.

The new method makes use of an algorithm that instantly assesses and adjusts the stimulation placementwith help of electroencephalography (EEG), which detects electrical activity in the brain. The researchers demonstrated how the method automatically finds the optimal stimulation parameters based on measured EEG responses.

Were basically measuring what happens in the brain immediately after each pulse. Based on the brains reaction that comes in the first tens of millisecondsor thousandths of a secondour algorithm will adjust, in real time, how the next stimulation pulse is given. Because we can find the optimal stimulation direction quickly, the method has real potential to improve the efficacy of TMS treatment, says Aino Tervo, a doctoral student at Aalto University and co-lead author on the paper.

Currently, TMS operators need to find the best stimulation location and orientation for each patients brain manually, a feat informed by training and experience but that brings variable outcomes and is slow. For example, with TMS, users can locate areas of the motor cortex or language network by observing immediate effects on patients hand movements or speech, a crucial function for surgeons preparing for brain surgery. To target other areas in the brain, like those associated with depression, operators rely on common understanding of where the target area is found in a typical brainan unreliable, and sometimes tedious, process.

Experiments detailed in the study show that the computer algorithm-powered TMSEEG feedback loop can find the optimal stimulation direction with a set of 3060 individual pulses in just 12 minutes. In comparison, it may take operators 1020 minutes to interpret the signals themselves; adding EEG feedback to the mix could stretch out manual assessment even longer.

The area that we initially assume might be the best to stimulate may not actually be the best. We need information to find the right spot, explains Aalto University Professor Risto Ilmoniemi, who leads the ERC-funded ConnectToBrain project carried out with researchers from the Universities of Tbingen and Chieti-Pescara.

What the algorithm is able to do is calculate where we can get the best information for finding the optimal stimulation for a particular patient, with the smallest possible number of pulses. Minimising the number of pulses makes the search faster and more comfortable, explains Ilmoniemi.

Rather than a single copper coil that administers the pulses, the prototype used in this study has two overlapping coils that make the orientation adjustments possible. This is the first step of larger efforts in the ConnectToBrain project to develop a comprehensive system capable of stimulating any part of the brain, or multiple areas simultaneously, in millisecond-scale time intervals.

The newest prototype device has five overlapping coils, which allows both the location and orientation to be adjusted in a specific brain region. Ultimately, these efforts could lead to the ability to instantly follow whether TMS treatment increases or decreases neural activity in key corners of the brain.

Why the Popularity of Online Gambling is on the Rise in India – APN News

Posted: at 8:34 am

Published on February 16, 2022

Gambling has been a part of Indian history and culture for a long time. Indians love to play card games and bet on sports and this is why today, online casinos and sportsbooks are gaining more popularity in the country.

Indians love to play games like poker and blackjack but now that online casinos know how big the market is in the country, theyve also tailor-fitted their services to the locals. Today, Indian gamblers can also play their favorite traditional or local card games like Teen Patti and Andar Bahar online.

The Legality of Online Gambling in India

There are a few reasons why the online gambling market in India is growing and most of it is because of legal online betting sites and apps in India. While gambling laws are quite strict on a national level, it has no mention of online gambling. This is why the locals are free to place their bets on online casinos that are based offshore.

The Public Gaming Act of 1867 is the basis of how gambling activities are regulated in India. It became a law when the internet was non-existent so theres no mention of online gambling at all. Theres also the Information Technology Act of 2000 that regulates all online activities in India. However, this too doesnt mention anything about online gambling. In short, its an activity thats not regulated and is still in the grey area in India.

As long as the online casino is not operating or based within the country, theyre free to offer their services in India. However, in some states, its required that these operators allow transactions with the local currencies. Aside from this, some states have imposed a ban on online gaming like Telangana and Karnataka.

While these states have imposed a ban on online gaming including gambling, MyBetting released a report last year that these are the states that bet the most. Telangana has the most people who bet online with 18.7% and Karnataka is second with 13.2%. This means that even with the prohibitions in place, people are still betting anyway.

The state of Tamil Nadu has also imposed a ban on online gaming early in 2021. However, before the year ended, the Madras High Court struck down the Tamil Nadu Gaming and Police Laws Act of 2021 as they deemed it unconstitutional. Whether the other states will experience the same is something we still have to watch out for.

Still, the Madras High Court said that Tamil Nadu could still work on a constitutional prohibition, and based on recent reports, the state is going after it. Meanwhile, the state of Karnataka also seems unfazed by the criticisms that the ban on online gaming could negatively impact Indias growing game development industry.

There is still hope, however, that India will eventually regulate online gambling instead. Countries like the United Kingdom have been successful with doing so over the years. India could learn from this country and gain revenues from the industry instead of losing millions or even billions from offshore gambling companies.

Why is Online Gambling Now the Preferred Option?

There are a few reasons why more and more Indians are gambling online instead. The improved internet infrastructure of the country plays an important role as well as the rising population of mobile users. India is a mobile country with over 1.8 billion mobile users. More than 744 million of them are then going online with their mobile devices.

We can also expect that more people will get into online gaming and gambling including live casino gaming once 5G connection is more widespread in the country. It is expected that more places in India will have 5G connections available this year. With that, people will be more comfortable playing games with their mobile devices.

This is why many online gambling companies are starting to focus more on the mobile market. The most popular casino and betting companies in India now have apps that people can download. If they dont have an app yet, they make sure that their sites are optimized for mobile web browsers as well. Many online casinos are also offering hard to resist bonuses to mobile app users.

Online gambling will likely gain more popularity in India in the next few years. This is why there have been calls to regulate the industry instead. This way, local gamblers will also be protected by the government and local laws. While its generally safe to trust reputable online casinos today, there will always be risks that come with gaming on offshore casino sites. Surely, regulating the industry could help fix this.

A Slippery Slope: The Rise of Online Gambling During the Global Pandemic – Santa Clarita Valley Signal

Posted: at 8:34 am

Meta Description: The global pandemic and lockdown restrictions led to a surge in online gambling. The popularity of online gambling led to an increase in problem gambling.

During the Covid-19 lockdowns, people used their free time to explore the latest technological developments. Since they could no longer visit betting shops and hotel casino resorts, they started exploring gambling sites. The latest studies show how the pandemic led to a rise in online gambling and how this, in turn, led to an increase in problem gambling.

Online Gambling Grew Six-fold Study Shows

The global pandemic has turned our life as we know it upside down. In many ways it has been an enlightening couple of years both in understanding what we have, and also in recognising what we lack. Unfortunately, the need to self-isolate has opened a can of worms when it comes to compulsive habits. Recent research suggests there has been a rise in online gambling, some of which may tend to indicate addictive behavior and thus be problematic.

According to a University of Bristol study recently published in the Journal of Gambling Studies, male gamblers in the UK were more inclined to gamble online during the pandemic than they used to.

Both men and women could not gamble at land-based establishments during the lockdown, but they gambled online instead. Regular gamblers used online poker rooms, online bingo sites, online sportsbooks, and online casinos six times more than they used land-based gambling services before the pandemic. Occasional gamblers played online two times more than they used to play at land-based casinos. Moreover, those belonging to the low-income groups were more likely to gamble online during the lockdown.

Lead author Prof. Alan Emond says that the study gives a unique insight into how gambling patterns changed during the lockdown. Although the lockdown restricted several forms of land-based gambling, regular gamblers played more at online sportsbooks and online casinos. But easy access to online gambling services during the pandemic has harmed vulnerable groups.

Why Online Gambling Increased During the Lockdown

When people had to stay indoors, they increased their screen time to beat boredom and manage stress and got heavily exposed to online products and services, including online gambling. A few countries noticed that bookmakers advertised their products and services heavily on social networking sites and websites to attract potential customers.

People felt bored, restless, unproductive, depressed, and anxious because they could no longer engage in social activities. Signing up at online casinos and online sportsbooks became the perfect way to pass the time for most people who used to gamble occasionally or frequently before the pandemic.

Land-based casinos, racetracks, and betting shops shut down to curb the spread of Coronavirus. Major sports events were suspended, cancelled, or postponed to later dates, creating a void in the lives of sports fans and bettors. They filled the void by using online sportsbooks and online casinos.

Problem Gambling Side Effect of Online Gambling Popularity

According to a UK Gambling Commission study, 1.2% of the gambling population develops an addiction to gambling. But this percentage increases to 2.5% when one considers only online sports betting and 9.2% when one considers online casinos.

People tend to gamble more online because online gambling is fast-paced. You can place bets continuously online, and chasing wins and losses becomes easier.

Online players use credit cards to fund their online gambling accounts instead of cash. If they lose control over their gambling activities, they can run into unmanageable credit card debts. Moreover, you can access online gambling sites at all hours on all devices. Players can easily access them, play irresponsibly, and experience gambling harm.

Since you can gamble online in the privacy of your home, it is difficult for someone to notice that you have become a problem gambler who needs help until it is too late.

A few countries have understood the dangers of the rise of online gambling during the pandemic and have restricted the activity to curb problem gambling. Still, online gambling sites are easy to access and use, putting vulnerable sections of society at risk of getting addicted.

Cambodia Shuts Another 15 Illegal Gambling Websites – GamblingNews.com

Posted: at 8:34 am

Cambodia continues to double down on its efforts of keeping the online gambling industry clean. To this end, the countrys telecommunications regulator has been able to suspend access to 15 illegal online lottery websites. Cambodia stopped issuing new online gambling licenses on January 1, 2020, making it clear that interactive gambling would have no place in the country.

Instead, Cambodia has focused on promoting its resorts to boost its tourism and appease China, an important regional partner who insisted on discontinuing certain forms of gambling in the country. Meanwhile, the telecommunications watchdog said that it would continue to cooperate with the National Police and other relevant authorities to strike down illegal online gambling and lottery services.

The U-turn on gambling in the industry also saw Cambodia start working closely with overseas partners in a bid to crackdown on international money laundering and scams based either inside or outside the country. The newest efforts target 15 new websites, but they are far from the only illegal operators.

In November last year, Cambodia shut down 79 illegal gambling websites, arguing that they posed dangers to public security. Since then, authorities have only intensified their bid to shut down such operations.

Meanwhile, police managed to free 60 people who had become victims of human trafficking in the country and were forced to work in illegal online gambling operations. Cambodia has faced some criticism, especially in the case of the NagaCorp worker protests.

Workers were laid off en masse, which prompted long protests. The government has decided to act in a manner that many alleged backed the integrated resort operator. Many protesters also face jail time now, which has led to international outrage. Both NagaCorp and Cambodia have denied any complicity in the manner.

Cambodia has also been criticized for the ongoing human trafficking in illegal casinos and the United States issued a warning to travelers and businesses.

Exclusive: Is Rivaldinho on His Way to the MLS? The Son of Former Ballon d’Or Winner Rivaldo is Talking to… – OnlineGambling.com

Posted: at 8:34 am

Brazilian striker Rivaldinho is eyeing a move to the MLS. According to Online Gambling sources, he is holding talks with two clubs after a transfer to Toronto FC collapsed recently.

The 26-year-old is under contract with Cracovia Krakow in the Polish top-flight but is on the lookout for a new challenge. A former player at Boavista in Portugal, as well as Dinamo Bucharest and Viitorul Constanta in Romania, Rivaldinho is the son of former Barcelona and AC Milan great and Ballon dOr winner Rivaldo.

This month, Rivaldinho turned down a loan move to Astana in Kazakhstan. His career in Poland never kicked off, as the talented attacker only scored once in 32 games for Krakow. This season, he started one game, also coming on from the bench on seven occasions. He told his representatives he would favor a move to the MLS over a comeback to his native Brazil, where clubs are also interested in him.

Online Gambling understands Toronto FC offered Rivaldinho a lucrative contract, but a deal could not be reached with Krakow over the transfer. Toronto then went for another player from the Polish league and signed Spanish forward Jesus Jimenez from Gornik Zabrze.

Ronaldinhos best season to date was 2019-20, when he netted 11 times for Viitorul in Romania. His most prestigious international goal was the beauty he scored against Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League while playing for Dinamo in 2017.
