US farms on alert as several cases of bird flu found – Macau Business

Posted: February 15, 2022 at 5:17 am

The US Department of Agriculture said Monday it had detected bird flu in two more farms after a first case came to light last week, putting the industry on guard.

After having already detected the virus in wild birds on several occasions on the east coast in recent weeks, the department said on February 9 it had found the disease in birds on a farm in Indiana.

On Monday it reported that two more farms had been affected, in Kentucky and Virginia.

The authorities have placed the sites in quarantine and the birds will be slaughtered to avoid possible spread throughout the country, which according to the USDA is the largest producer of poultry in the world.

No cases have been detected in humans so far and the disease does not present an immediate public health threat, authorities said.

But the agricultural sector will remain vigilant to avoid a repeat of the 2015 avian flu outbreak, which affected 211 farms in 15 states, from California to Indiana.

During that flare-up, nearly 50 million birds were killed and their carcasses destroyed, and several countries suspended US imports. The department put total losses at about $3.3 billion.

After the first case was discovered in Indiana last week, Mexico and China moved quickly to limit imports from that state.

A spokesman for the National Chicken Council said in an email to AFP that any detection of the virus was worrying but said the control and monitoring program put in place by the authorities is the most robust in the world.

Tyson Foods, one of the largest chicken producers in the United States, said when it released its results on February 7 that it had already increased preventative measures, in particular on the east coast of the United States.

The group has limited the number of visits to its farms and increased cleaning time for vehicles traveling to them.

Europe is already experiencing an avian flu outbreak, with more than 18 million birds slaughtered in Italy and around three million in France since the first cases detected in farms at the end of November.

Spain arrests cousin over teen’s disappearance in Italy – Macau Business

Posted: at 5:17 am

Another relative of a teenage girl thought to have been murdered in Italy last year by her Pakistani family was arrested Monday in Spain, Spanish and Italian police said.

Spanish police arrested a cousin of 18-year-old Saman Abbas at an apartment near Barcelona in a joint operation carried out with Italian police, a spokesman for Spains National Police said.

He was detained this morning, he said.

Italian police identified him as 34-year-old Nomanulhaq Nomanulhaq, who is suspected of being jointly responsible for the kidnapping, murder and concealment of the body of Abbas.

Another cousin and the young womans uncle were both arrested in France and extradited to Italy last year over her death, while Samans parents are still fugitives in Pakistan.

The case has sparked outrage in Italy and has become front page news since police began investigating the teenagers disappearance in May. Her body has yet to be found.

Abbas, who lived in the northern Italian town of Novellara, in 2020 refused her familys plan to have her marry a cousin in their home country of Pakistan.

While still a minor, she turned to social services and in November 2020 was moved into a shelter home. She also reported her parents to police, but in April 2021 returned to them.

Police began searching for her on May 5, when officers visited her house and found nobody.

Officers then discovered that the girls parents had left for Pakistan without her, and found images from a nearby security camera that made them fear the worst.

Late on April 29, five people could be seen walking off from the house holding shovels, a crowbar and a bucket, and returning after about two-and-a-half hours.

Boeing reaches annual record of 2 bln USD e-commerce sales – Macau Business

Posted: at 5:17 am

Boeing announced Monday that it achieved an annual record for e-commerce parts sales in 2021 with more than 2 billion U.S. dollars in online orders.

Boeing Distribution Inc. (formerly Aviall) sold nearly 70,000 parts products through its e-commerce site to commercial and government customers, eclipsing pre-pandemic levels. Commercial orders accounted for 1.5 billion dollars in sales, reflecting the continued recovery in the airline industry, the company said.

Boeing Distribution Inc.s online revenue last year was 15 percent higher compared to pre-pandemic levels, while orders were 20 percent higher. The stronger sales came as the company rolled out new tools to improve the customer experience, including a new homepage, a live chat feature, and an online knowledge center, according to the announcement.

The refreshed e-commerce parts website, which features over 500,000 products, saw 5 million visits from 50 countries last year.

Our 2 billion U.S. dollars closeout to 2021 was a great capstone as the market heads to a more stable recovery, said Ted Colbert, president and chief executive officer of Boeing Global Services. Our e-commerce capabilities are a great example of the digital solutions we provide to enable industry recovery and growth.

In addition to launching new digital tools, we are creating a more streamlined process for our customers by realigning strategy, program, and product line management with supply chain and customer support, said William Ampofo, vice president of Parts, Distribution Services, and Supply Chain at Boeing Global Services.

3M expects to sell fewer Covid-19 masks this year – Macau Business

Posted: at 5:17 am

After seeing sales of medical masks soar during the Covid-19 pandemic, US manufacturer 3M warned Monday that demand is expected to slow sharply this year.

The warning echoes that of other companies like vaccine-maker Pfizer and the CVS drugstore chain that have said pandemic-related sales are likely to soften.

After Covid-19 broke out in 2020, 3M, a conglomerate that makes a wide range of products from Post-it notes to air filters, quickly ramped up output of face masks, which became ubiquitous.

But in its quarterly earnings report Monday, 3M forecast a decline in Covid-related respirator demand which it said will weigh on overall sales growth and also dampen earnings.

Honeywell in early February said it sold fewer masks in the fourth quarter compared to the same period in 2020, and sees the slowdown continuing this year, hitting the companys overall sales.

Pfizer, whose vaccine developed with German company BioNTech was the first approved in the United States to counter the deadly virus, warned last week that sales of the jabs would slow in 2022.

But the US pharmaceutical group expects to see sales of its Covid-19 treatment pill to jump to at least $22 billion.

Meanwhile, CVS, which conducted 32 million Covid tests and administered more than 59 million vaccines in 2021, said last week it is expecting vaccinations to drop by 70 to 80 percent and testing to fall by as much as 50 percent.

CVS Chief financial officer Shawn Guertin told analysts the chain should see a modest uptick in sales of over-the-counter test kits.

‘He wins everything’ Friedrich on track in Beijing two-man bobsleigh – Macau Business

Posted: at 5:17 am

Francesco Friedrich was on course to retain his two-man bobsleigh Olympic title and add to his impressive collection of victories this winter as the German took a slender overnight lead after Mondays heats.

Friedrich set a new course record in the opening heat on his way to clocking a fastest combined time of 1min 58.38sec for Mondays two heats in Yanqing, north of Beijing.

However, his overnight lead is just 0.15sec after German team-mate Johannes Lochner was fastest on the second run.

Friedrich remains the favourite having won 14 of his 16 World Cup races this winter.

He (Friedrich) wins everything, right? So obviously people would consider him the one to beat, Canadian pilot Justin Krips, who sits tenth, said in training.

The 35-year-old shared two-man gold with Friedrich at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics after both clocked exactly the same time.

I think they also considered him the one to beat going into 2018, and hes even more dominant now, added Krips.

Friedrich is seeking to defend his two and four-man titles from four years ago.

If he takes two-man gold in Tuesdays final heats, it will mean German racers have won seven of the eight events at the Yanqing National Sliding Centre.

Germany urged to save citizen risking execution in Iran – Macau Business

Posted: at 5:17 am

Germany must act immediately to prevent the hanging of a national detained in Iran who risks the death penalty on charges vehemently denied by his supporters, his family and activists said on Monday.

Anti-regime activist Jamshid Sharmahd, 66, appeared in court in Tehran earlier this month charged with spreading corruption on earth over accusations of involvement in a bombing at a mosque in 2008.

If convicted on this charge, which campaigners say is often used against opponents of the government, he could face execution.

It is of the utmost importance that the German federal government act immediately to prevent the planned state assassination of Mr Sharmahd, his daughter Gazelle and more than two dozen other activists said in an open letter to German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.

We urge you to take immediate, serious and sustained action to save the life of the 66-year-old German citizen and his family from this horrific act, said the signatories, who included former detainees in Iran and family members of those still held.

Sharmahds family say that he was abducted by the Iranian security services in 2020 while in transit in Dubai and then brought under duress to Iran.

He is affiliated withan anti-regime group known as Kingdom Assembly of Iran and had been based in the United States.

The family fears he risks a similar fate to France-based Ruhollah Zam, who was executed in December 2020 after leaving Paris in October 2020for Iraq, where supporters say he was detained by Iran.

The lettersaid the family was very concerned for the health of Sharmahd, who was now severely emaciated.

It noted that his trial is presided over by Abolqasem Salavati, the same judge who had sentenced Zam to death.

We urge that the matter be given top priority, that a crisis management team be set up, and that the German government exhaust all political and diplomatic avenues to put pressure on the Islamic Republic of Iran, said the letter.

A general condemnation of the death penalty and a call to respect human rights are not enough.

Sharmahd is one of over a dozen Western nationals including American, Austrian, British, French and German citizens still held in Iran as talks to revive the 2015 deal over Tehrans nuclear drive reach an acute phase.

Iran accuses Sharmahdof being involved in the April 12, 2008, bombing of a mosque in Shiraz in southern Iran, which killed 14 people.

Order of the Golden Sun – MicroWiki – micronations.wiki

Posted: at 5:16 am

The Order of the Golden Sun (Maltese: L-Ordni tax-Xemx tad-Deheb) is the only National Chivalric Decoration of the Democratic Christian Republic of Melite. It is awarded for special achievements in political, economic, cultural, intellectual or honorary fields and the recognition of services to the Republic and its citizens as a whole. This award can also be given to foreign dignitaries that help widen Melite's diplomacy as a way of gratitude. There is no limit whatsoever as to how many people can join a grade of the Order. The title 'Friend of the Nation' may also incorporated as part of the Order, though it is rarely awarded.

The idea of the Order originated on 29 December 2021, by Dhrubajyoti Roy, Rashtradhyaksh of Vishwamitra, who suggested to President Matthew Tonna to overhaul the awards system of Melite. Tonna agreed and as a result, the Order was established and is a replacement of the Order of the Holy Cross, the Friendship Ribbon of Melite, and the High Order of Melite, which are dormant as per Presidential Decree No. 5/2021,[1] which instituted this Order and put the old decorations to their current dormant state. The ribbons were designed by the Rashtradhyaksh of the State of Vishwamitra, Dhrubajyoti Roy himself. The award was given for the first time in the New Year of 2022[2] for the New Year Honours. No known privileges come with the Order of the Golden Sun, except for the post-nominals. The Order is similar to the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, as they both serve as the only national award of their nations, but divided in classes.

Ribbons given for the Order of the Golden Sun, from the highest grade to the lowest:

Full Title: Grand Cross Special Class of the Order of the Golden Sun of Melite

Only Grand Masters of the Order can receive the Order in this grade. The Grand Masters of the Order are the current or former Presidents of Melite, and the current or former Mayors of the YeLand Special Administrative Region of the Democratic Christian Republic of Melite. The President of Melite can induct members of the Order without consulting the YeLand Mayor, but Mayors of YeLand have to consult with the President of Melite before inducting new members in the Order's ranks.

Full Title: Grand Cross First Class of the Order of the Golden Sun of Melite

Foreign Heads of State and Special Allies of Melite can receive this grade of the Order. This grade is given for exceptionally notable contributions to the Democratic Christian Republic of Melite, whether in its politics, or even its national symbols. Two notable examples are Dhrubajyoti Roy, Rashtradhyaksh (King) of the State of Vishwamitra who designed the ribbons of this Order and tefan Marius Snagoveanu, who designed the new and current National Flag of Melite, which replaced the old one on the 30th of December, 2021.

Premiers of Melite and Supreme Judges of Melite (outgoing or current), can receive the Order in this grade for distinction in their tenures of office. The first awardees were Premier Arama Vella and Supreme Judge Matthew Vella who both were still serving their offices at the time of their awarding. Foreign Royalties may also receive the Order in this grade, with one example being Alexander I Constantine of Monmark, as reciprocation for the Order of the Crowned Lion which President Tonna received on Boxing Day of 2021.

Diplomats to Melite and Non-Royalty Heads of State may be awarded this grade of the Order for their distinction in their services to the Republic's foreign policy, and to allies of Melite. A notable Commander of the Order of the Golden Sun is the President of the Parliamentary Monarchy of Duckionary Arthur C. Woldan in his capacity as Ambassador of Duckionary for Melite and Malta.

This grade is exclusive only for citizens of the Democratic Christian Republic of Melite. This grade does not make discrimination of the awardee's District. Therefore this grade does not make distinction of whether the awardees' region is any of Melite's eight Districts, or the YeLand Special Administrative Region of the Democratic Christian Republic of Melite. The only inductee of this award is Raphael Cassar.

This grade can be awarded to anyone regardless of status, with no special criteria. None have been awarded as of yet.

'Friend of the Nation' is a title that can be given with the order to an individual, regardless of status in Melite or micronationalism ingeneral. It is given in gratitude to someone that has given immensely large help to the forming of Melite, helping it become what it is today, and also friendship with the President. The only current recipient of this title is currently Dhrubajyoti Roy of the State of Vishwamitra. The title holds no post-nominals and will only serve as an honorary prefix.

Opinion | The Rise in Book Bans and Censorship – The New York Times

Many thanks to those students who are speaking up at school boards for their right to have books that are important to them. Adults in the community need to take a page out of their book and stand against censorship.

Marilyn ElieCortlandt Manor, N.Y.The writer is a retired school librarian.

To the Editor:

Re Tennessee Board Bans Teaching of Holocaust Novel (news article, Jan. 29):

Im Jewish, from New York City, and I taught at a state university serving low-income Tennessee students for 25 years. So I need to set the record straight.

Every Tennessee fifth grader is required to learn about the Holocaust. My university, with its minuscule fraction of Jewish students, has a Holocaust studies minor. We host an international Holocaust conference every two years.

To convey the magnitude of six million lost, three decades ago teachers in Whitwell, Tenn., asked their eighth-grade class to collect that many paper clips. They ended up with 30 million, sent to the school from people around the world. These are on display in the schools Childrens Holocaust Memorial, housed in a boxcar from Germany, which may be the most riveting testament of young people working together to vow Never again.

People in the rural South have different cultural norms. After moving to Tennessee, I learned you dont swear in class. But painting a state as yahoos and Holocaust deniers for rejecting cursing or nudity in one book epitomizes the very stereotype we people who study the Holocaust should always abhor.

To the Editor:

Re A Disturbing Book Changed My Life, by Viet Thanh Nguyen (Sunday Review, Jan. 30):

One could argue that Art Spiegelmans Maus, which depicts the fascism and bigotry flourishing in Poland in the 1940s, mirrors a disturbingly similar political climate, albeit to a lesser degree, in America today. Maybe that is the real reason the Tennessee school board preferred to limit this information to its young scholars.

Books are inseparable from ideas, Mr. Nguyen notes.

For that reason alone the current book-banning trend in America is an abomination. It does not belong in an educated, open-minded and enlightened society. From the evidence of late, these attributes do not define America today, nor does their paucity offer much promise for the future. The dumbing down of America is no longer a joke.

Voice of the people: Censorship is parents’ right – The Ledger

Censorship is parents' right

The recent removal of 16 books from Polk County school libraries in response to complaints from a political group declaring the books to be obscene undermines parents rights to have a say in the education of their children.

The list of banned books includes highly acclaimed works by respected authors, including a recipient of the Nobel and Pulitzer prizes for literature. Presumably, these materials were placed in school libraries based on the judgment of professional educators who deemed them to be of value to students.

Provocative and challenging literary works are bound to offend the tastes and sensibilities of some. Parents have the right to prohibit their own childrens access to library materials they consider unsuitable. A group of self-appointed censors should not be able to intimidate school administrators to deny everyone access to materials that group finds offensive.

Although the complaining group calls itself County Citizens Defending Freedom, the preemptive removal of the books by timid school administrators denies freedom of choice to parents who may have different views. School officials say the current ban is not final, but reinstatement of the prohibited materials depends on a protracted multi-committee review process which they acknowledge has no timeline.

Social Media Should Censor Itself, Without Government Intervention, Most Americans Say – CNET

Posted: at 5:15 am

Bad behavior seems pervasive on the internet. Americans want Big Tech to deal with it.

Social media is getting under our skin, and new polling data shows that Americans want tech companies to fix it.

Surveys released by polling firm Ipsos on Monday show that a majority of Americans support content moderation on social networks, including putting warning labels on misinformation, deleting incitements to violence and suspending or banning offending accounts. Only 19% of Americans believe tech companies should do nothing and allow incitements to violence to be posted. Even fewer people, just 17%, believe social media companies should do nothing and allow posts containing misinformation or bullying.

Catch up on the biggest news stories in minutes. Delivered on weekdays.

"Basically, public opinion is giving license to tech companies to curate themselves," saidCliff Young, president of US Public Affairs at Ipsos. He added that another Ipsos poll found that Americans don't support government intervention with social media content. "What we see across the board is support for self-action" by tech companies, he said.

More than half of Americans support social media companies acting against bad behavior.

The Ipsos data, based on about 200 questions asked in eight polls over the past year and made available to the wider public Monday, offers an unusually clear indication of what Americans want social media companies to do about bad behavior on their platforms.

For much of the last decade, politicians, tech executives and people using the internet have argued about how much social media companies like Facebook, Twitter, Google's YouTube and TikTok should moderate their platforms. Companies that track hate groups say the companies aren't aggressively pulling down enough posts, while many politicians, including former President Donald Trump, say tech companies have gone too far.

In some cases, conservative politicians, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, have signed new laws aimed at punishing social media companies for "wrongful censorship" on their platforms. Though many of those efforts have struggled amid constitutional arguments in the courts, some of the loudest voices in American politics have made clear they believe big tech companies shouldn't moderate potentially hateful, bullying or incendiary political speech.

Polling shows that many Americans agree on most policy proposals around big tech, including antitrust, right to repair and net neutrality.

Shortly after the US Capitol riots on Jan. 6 last year, tech companies including Twitter, Facebook and YouTube removed Trump and some of his most vocal advocates from their platforms. They cited concerns that Trump's months long campaign of bullying, threats and lies about his election loss had sparked the carnage that left five people dead, including a Capitol Police officer. Trump has since released many statements denying his culpability, arguing instead that tech companies had acted wrongly. Trump's actions related to the Jan. 6 riot led to his second impeachment by the US House of Representatives, and they're a focal point for a bipartisan congressional commission investigating the event.

Young, at Ipsos, said the Capitol riots were a key moment when many Americans began to reexamine social media's role in their lives.

Indeed, older polls from the Pew Research Center showed that before the 2020 election and 2021 riot, Americans were much more split about how to treat tech. A 2019 study by Pew found that 77% of Democrats thought social media companies "have a responsibility to remove offensive content from their platforms." By comparison, about 52% of Republicans had the same view back then.

Fast-forward to 2021, when Ipsos polling performed in the months after the Capitol riots indicated that more Americans in both parties want tech companies to curb bad behavior online. "This was an inflection point for decision makers wanting to better understand the relationship between society and tech," Young said.

A mob of people carrying Trump flags attacked the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, erecting a hangman's noose, beating police officers and threatening lawmakers.

Tech companies are among the most profitable, most valuable and most powerful businesses in the world. They're also front of mind for many Americans, who rate disinformation, conspiracy theories, social media-driven radicalization and hacking above other big issues, like racism and the climate crisis. More than 79% of respondents to one Ipsos poll, in September, said they were concerned with at least one of those tech issues, roughly tying with "crime and public safety" and "the economy and jobs."

Ipsos data also found that Republicans, Democrats and independents largely agreed on the importance of these issues, with hacking, malware and data breaches scoring among the top three concerns from all three groups.

Additionally, Ipsos surveys found that Americans largely understand the difference between social media companies and other tech giants, with 88% saying search engines and the ability to find things on the internet improved their lives, while only 45% felt the same about social media. When discussing specific companies, respondents saying they're Republican or independent overall had a negative view of Facebook and Twitter, while less than 15% of Democrats viewed either company favorably. Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Apple were all viewed more favorably, Ipsos data showed.
