Imagine this: the metaverse with Chinese characteristics. That's how the virtual world that everyone's talking about will likely look in the world's second-largest economy.

China's technology giants are beginning to invest in the metaverse the latest buzzword in internet technology. It's a term with no concrete definition, but largely taken to mean virtual worlds that people will be playing and living in.

Censorship will likely be rife and regulation tight as Beijing continues to keep a close check on the practices of its domestic technology firms.

U.S. firms like Facebook parent Meta are going all-in on the metaverse concept, while Microsoft has positioned its proposed acquisition of gaming company Activision as a play on this theme.

Chinese firms are taking a more cautious approach. So what are they up to and how will regulation play out?

In China, the total addressable market for the metaverse could be 52 trillion yuan, or around $8 trillion, Morgan Stanley said in a note published last month.

Companies like Tencent, NetEase, TikTok owner ByteDance and Alibaba could be the front-runners in this space among China's internet companies.

Metaverse is the future of social network. All China's tech giants have to embrace it to find new ways to engage the youngest generation of internet users...

Winston Ma

managing partner, CloudTree Ventures

That comes down to the type of applications that could be part of the metaverse. Analysts say that virtual reality, gaming and social media could be some of the early applications.

This may include things like buying virtual items in games or creating digital avatars of yourself to participate in meetings.

"Metaverse is the future of social network. All China's tech giants have to embrace it to find new ways to engage the youngest generation of internet users, which is critical at the time when their business models on smartphones and mobile internet are matured," Winston Ma, managing partner at CloudTree Ventures, told CNBC.

In an earnings call in November, Tencent CEO Pony Ma said the metaverse will be an opportunity to add growth to existing industries such as gaming. Tencent is the world's largest gaming company with a strong portfolio of PC and mobile games.

Tencent also owns WeChat, a messaging service with over a billion users that has social media aspects.

Ma said the company has "a lot of the technology and know-how building blocks" to explore and develop the metaverse.

Meanwhile, ByteDance has made an aggressive expansion into gaming over the last year. In August, the company acquired virtual reality headset maker Pico. ByteDance also owns TikTok, the short-form video app, and its Chinese equivalent Douyin. The Beijing-headquartered firm has laid foundations in VR, social media and gaming.

Alibaba this year said it plans to launch augmented reality glasses for virtual meetings. Augmented reality refers to virtual images overlaid on the real world. Again, this could be a play on the metaverse. The e-commerce giant launched a "virtual influencer" named Dong Dong for the Winter Olympics in Beijing. The digital avatar can be found on Alibaba's Taobao shopping app and provides facts about the Olympics and also promotes items related to the Games.

NetEase, another one of China's gaming giants, has set up a base in the southern province of Hainan focused on the development of metaverse applications, local media reported last year.

Search giant Baidu launched a metaverse app last year called XiRang, a sort of virtual world that can hold up to 100,000 people at once. Baidu executives, however, downplayed expectations of the app at its launch and said many aspects were not yet up to par. Ma Jie, a vice president at Baidu, said it could be another six years until a full launch.

Still, there are signs that China's biggest technology names are beginning to experiment and lay the groundwork for future applications.

"Similar to the pitch we've seen from Meta, the metaverse concept may at first involved VR/AR-supported games and social interactive environments," Charles Mok, the founder of Tech For Good Asia, told CNBC.

"These will obviously be the areas that China big tech players will follow first, with features that are advanced in China such as payment, and WeChat-like integrated online services that can be extended and built into the metaverse."

The metaverse push by Chinese tech firms comes after an intense year of regulatory scrutiny on the country's tech sector.

New anti-monopoly laws for internet platforms were proposed, while a landmark personal data protection law has been passed. Beijing has also cut the amount of time children under 18 years of age are allowed to play online games.

Analysts said these existing pieces of legislation will likely be used to regulate metaverse applications as well, even as new ones are developed.

"The sheer diversity of metaverse applications means developing a 'one-fits-all' set of policies will not be feasible for Beijing," Hanyu Liu, China market analyst at Daxue Consulting, told CNBC.

"Each specific application would receive its own unique set of regulations that builds upon existing legislature."

[China] knows just when and where it needs to stay its hand; close enough so that it can keep a careful watch, but not to the point where it would cause irreversible harm to the industry.

Hanyu Liu

China market analyst, Daxue Consulting

China also continues to censor content on its tightly controlled internet.

"We should also expect to see strict censorship, meaning there will most likely be an isolated, Chinese metaverse that is separate from the international," Liu said.

There are more specific pieces of regulation that analysts said could be used to manage the metaverse.

In January, authorities passed a set of regulations that governs how internet firms can use recommendation algorithms. That was followed by draft rules regarding so-called "deep synthesis" technology. This relates to software that could be used to generate or edit voices, video or images or virtual settings. The two rules overlap.

"This overlap with the recent algorithm rule as specifically required by the new rule would have important impact on Metaverse companies in China," Ma said.

Even Chinese cities and regions are looking at opportunities for the metaverse. Last year, the major city of Shanghai mentioned the metaverse in its five-year development plan for the information technology industry.

"China is extremely smart when it comes to this. It knows just when and where it needs to stay its hand; close enough so that it can keep a careful watch, but not to the point where it would cause irreversible harm to the industry," Liu said.

Joe Rogan and the freedom of speech | News, Sports, Jobs – Escanaba Daily Press

WASHINGTON If all mankind minus one, were of one opinion, and only one person were of the contrary opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing that one person, than he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind. John Stuart Mill (1806-1873)

For two and a half centuries, the concept of free speech has bedeviled the United States.

The Framers suffered under a British colonial regime that punished speech critical of the British monarch. Yet, shortly after the ratification of the Bill of Rights, in which the First Amendment expressly commands that Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech, Congress enacted the Alien and Sedition Acts, which criminalized speaking maliciously about the government.

During the War Between the States, President Abraham Lincoln used the military to arrest and incarcerate without trial thousands of newspaper editors and journalists in the North who were critical of his decisions during the war.

During World War I, President Woodrow Wilson used the precursor to the FBI to arrest those who read the Declaration of Independence aloud and sang German beer hall songs in front of draft registration offices. Wilson argued that the First Amendment only restrained Congress, not the president as commander in chief. His Department of Justice successfully prosecuted folks who spoke out against American involvement in the war.

In the 1950s, the government prosecuted free speech deemed to be a clear and present danger to national security. None of it was. In a famous California case, the defendant was convicted of plotting to overthrow the government by her mere presence at a Communist Party convention, even though she opposed the resolution advocating the overthrow.

It was not until 1969 that government prosecution of speech came to a grinding halt when the Supreme Court unanimously ruled that all innocuous speech is absolutely protected, and all speech is innocuous when there is time for more speech to rebut it.

Equally as dangerous as the prosecutions themselves was their popularity. The defendants were often unsympathetic, and their speech for the most part was shunned and hated. That made the governments job easier.

But the First Amendment only insulates speech from the governments reach. It does not insulate it from private reach. Stated differently, if your speech offends the government, today it cannot sue or prosecute you. But, if you work for a private entity, your boss can punish you for speech that transgresses regulations in the workplace.

All of this is background to the present public drama involving the podcaster Joe Rogan. Rogan is the king of the podcasting hill. He has far more viewers and listeners than anyone else in the business. And so, he is a target of those who hate his ideas.

Rogan has licensed his podcasts to Spotify. Spotify does not produce Rogans show. It does not create his work, choose his guests or write his scripts. It merely makes Rogans show available to its paying customers.

Some of its customers and some of its other licensees have announced that they are offended by Rogans tone, his choice of words and what some of his guests have said. This began a few weeks ago when Rogan, who is a champion of personal liberty, interviewed two physicians who argued against the prevailing attitudes of the government, Big Pharma and medical elites about vaccines and face masks.

Suddenly, because of what his guests have said, Rogan became anathema, and lefties wanted him removed from Spotify. Put aside the financial consequences of such a removal the Spotify/Rogan deal is worth more than $100 million the activists who want Rogan silenced prefer that there be no public dialogue on health care because they hate and fear the speech that liberates.

Stated differently, some entertainers who have also licensed their work to Spotify, and their fans who subscribe to Spotify, are offended when they hear Rogans guests with whom they disagree, and they want him silenced.

Is there a right not to be offended? Of course not.

The freedom of speech, however, is a natural right. It comes from within each of us. Its essence is that individuals have a natural right to think as we wish and say what we think and listen to whomever we choose, and we dont need the approval of the government or a consensus of the loudest.

To those who want to silence Rogan, just imagine what this mess of a country would be like if the loudest voices could silence all others. Freedom thrives on the clash and free flow of ideas. Since 1969, we have succeeded in keeping the government out of the business of censoring and punishing speech; now we must keep the mob out.

Do the Rogan haters really want those bad old days to return? I ask this because the folks who hate and fear Rogans ideas really hate and fear his freedom and their next step will be to use the government to silence him. It is short steps from hatred to silencing to punishing speech.

But Rogan has the natural right to say what he wants and to speak with whomever he pleases. For him, that is tempered only by his voluntary licensing agreement with Spotify. And listeners have a right to listen to Rogan or not to listen. The Natural Law insulates the exercise of our rights from all incursions, not just the government. Neither you nor the government can legally take down my Vote for Ron Paul lawn sign.

Stated differently, you can shout Fire! in a crowded theater if the owner of the theater permits it. Joe Rogan can say on Spotify whatever Spotify permits, and Rogan can give platforms to those who challenge the establishment, and if you dont like his show, dont watch or listen.

The moral and constitutional remedy for hated speech is more speech. Hang in there, Joe.

Opinion | America 2022: Where Everyone Has Rights and No One Has Responsibilities – The New York Times

Posted: at 5:21 am

The conflict between Neil Young and Joe Rogan over the anti-vaccine propaganda Rogan spreads through his podcast triggered a heated debate over the boundaries of free speech on platforms like Spotify and whether one entertainer Young had the right to tell Spotify to drop another Rogan or hed leave himself. But this clash was about something more than free speech.

As a journalist who relies on freedom of speech, I would never advocate tossing Rogan off Spotify. But as a citizen, I sure appreciated Young calling him out over the deeper issue: How is it that we have morphed into a country where people claim endless rights while fewer and fewer believe they have any responsibilities?

That was really Youngs message for Rogan and Spotify: Sure, you have the right to spread anti-vaccine misinformation, but wheres your sense of responsibility to your fellow citizens, and especially to the nurses and doctors who have to deal with the fallout for your words?

This pervasive claim that I have my rights but I dont have responsibilities is unraveling our country today.

We are losing what could be called our societal immunity, argued Dov Seidman, founder of the How Institute for Society. Societal immunity is the capacity for people to come together, do hard things and look out for one another in the face of existential threats, like a pandemic, or serious challenges to the cornerstones of their political and economic systems, like the legitimacy of elections or peaceful transfer of power.

But societal immunity is a function of trust, added Seidman. (Disclosure: Seidman is a donor to my wifes museum, Planet Word.) When trust in institutions, leaders and each other is high, people in a crisis are more willing to sublimate their cherished rights and demonstrate their sense of shared responsibilities toward others, even others they disagree with on important issues and even if it means making sacrifices.

When our trust in each other erodes, though, as is happening in America today, fewer people think they have responsibilities to the other only rights that protect them from being told by the other what to do.

When Rogan exercised his right to spread misinformation about vaccines, and when Spotify stood behind its biggest star, they were doing nothing illegal.

They were just doing something shameful.

Because the Rogan podcast episode that set off the controversy, an interview with Dr. Robert Malone, who has gained fame with discredited claims, completely ignored the four most important statistical facts about Covid-19 today that highlight our responsibilities to our fellow citizens and, even more so, to the nurses and doctors risking their lives to take care of us in a pandemic.

The first three statistics are from the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions latest surveys. First, unvaccinated adults 18 years and older are 16 times more likely to be hospitalized for Covid than fully vaccinated adults. Second: Adults 65 and older who are not vaccinated are around 50 times more likely to be hospitalized for Covid than those who have received a full vaccine course and a booster. Third: Unvaccinated people are 20 times more likely to die of Covid than people who are vaccinated and boosted.

The fourth statistic is from a survey from the staffing firm Cross Country Healthcare and Florida Atlantic Universitys College of Nursing, released in December. It found that the emotional toll and other work conditions brought on by the pandemic contributed to some two-thirds of nurses giving thought to leaving the profession.

A McKinsey study last month about the stress on nurses quoted Gretchen Berlin, a registered nurse and McKinsey partner, as saying: Many patients, especially at the start of this, had only the nurses with them for those final moments, and Im not sure that weve provided the decompression space for what that does to an individual who has to see that and support people through that over and over again. The level of stress that individuals are dealing with is going to have massive implications on everyones well-being.

My friend Dr. Steven Packer, president and C.E.O. of Montage Health and Community Hospital in Monterey, Calif., told me that many hospitals today are experiencing an unprecedented 20 percent annual turnover rate of nurses more than double the historical baseline. The more nurses leave, the more those left behind have had to work overtime.

We have hard-working frontline staff in critical care settings stretched thin caring for critically ill Covid patients with the overwhelming majority of those patients having a potentially avoidable illness had they only been vaccinated, explained Packer. It is disheartening and distressing.

Especially when so many dying unvaccinated patients tell their nurses, I wish I had gotten vaccinated, according to the American Hospital Association.

But as Wired magazine columnist Steve Levy wrote last week in a critique of Rogans three-hour Spotify interview with Malone, none of these statistics were mentioned during that podcast.

You can listen to the entire 186-minute lovefest between Rogan and Malone and have no idea that our hospitals are overloaded with Covid cases, wrote Levy, and that on the day their conversation transpired, 7,559 people worldwide died of Covid, 1,410 of which were in the United States. The vast majority of them were unvaccinated.

Instead, the entirety of the podcast makes it clear that Rogan and Malone are on the same team, Levy added. When Malone uncorks questionable allegations about disastrous vaccine effects and the global cabal of politicians and drugmakers pulling strings, Rogan responds with uh-huhs and wows. There is no mention of the numerous studies that unvaccinated people are many, many times more likely to be hospitalized or die.

That was Rogans right. That was Spotify C.E.O. Daniel Eks right. But who was looking out for the doctors and nurses on the pandemic front lines whose only ask is that the politicians and media influencers who are privileged enough to have public platforms especially one like Rogan with an average of 11 million listeners per episode use them to reinforce our responsibilities to one another, not just our rights.

Ill tell you who was defending them: Neil Young.

Listen to the last line of Youngs statement when he pulled out of Spotify: I am happy and proud to stand in solidarity with the frontline health care workers who risk their lives every day to help others.

Rogan has vowed to do better at counterbalancing controversial guests. He could start by offering his listeners a 186-minute episode with intensive care nurses and doctors about what this pandemic of the unvaccinated has done to them.

That would be a teaching moment, not only about Covid, but also about putting our responsibilities to one another and especially to those who care for us at least on a par with our right to be as dumb and selfish as we want to be.

The revolution is coming: Playing Russian roulette with inequity – Stuff.co.nz

Posted: at 5:19 am

Ben Kepes is a Canterbury-based entrepreneur and professional board member.

OPINION: Recently I've written a few posts about the sociopolitical climate here in New Zealand. In my posts, I have posited that we don't live in a communist or socialist state but rather in a social democracy where community values (social safety net, public health, accessible education, etc) are woven into the fabric of society.

I naively assumed it would be a fairly benign position to take - more fool me.

It's been fascinating seeing the responses to my posts - one thing about having so many connections on social media platforms such as LinkedIn is that I get really good reach and get comments from people from all walks of life and many different geographies.

Part of that commentary group is a significant selection of fairly right-wing (and, yes, right-wing is a relative term) US commentators who have spent generations being brought up in sheer terror of some kind of descent into a socialistic morass.

Supplied

Ben Kepes says the poor are getting poorer, and the average working woman or man is increasingly, in relative terms, poorer than their parents.

An example of one of these comments goes like this: I don't want the government to keep me safe' I want them to assure my freedom, that is their job. I need the government to stay out of my way so I can run my business, provide for my family, etc. Anyone saying they are trying to keep you safe is out to control you.

READ MORE:* Time to cool it on criticism of socialist Covid-19 response* The fallacy of education as a fix for income disparities* Our future shouldn't be determined by our result in the lottery of life * The role of a public health system in treating causes, not symptoms

That's a fairly typical reaction from the libertarian demographic who have lived their entire lives in a country without the things we in New Zealand take for granted (those aforementioned social benefits) and who have grown accustomed to having to pay for a decent education and health service.

Some of my friends would suggest that the perspective articulated in those comments are those of an entitled class who haven't got any real lived experience from the "other side of the tracks". Those people can therefore afford decent healthcare and education and rail at the thought of having to "subsidise" those things for others.

Notably absent from the comments are the voices of the others. Those who, through an accident of birth or lack of opportunity, don't enjoy those same benefits and hence only dream of high-quality education and healthcare.

Breakfast

Commentator Bernard Hickey made the claim after analysing data from the last 21 months. (Published Jan 31, 2021)

I was thinking about this factor recently when I had a conversation with a friend of mine, someone who is a decent and genuine human being, way smarter than I will ever be and with experience living both here and in the US. That person was reflecting on the relative merits of the New Zealand and the US system, specifically as it related to healthcare.

As they wrote to me: When your kid is sick you dont give a s... about equity, you just care about fixing your kid. Whats very frustrating as a rich American is that even money does not fix it as the specialist services just dont exist in the first place. New Zealand, unfortunately, puts equity ahead of excellence in both education and healthcare. We are fair but mediocre. Not a cause for pride.

Now I absolutely accept that, as a parent, we are sometimes blinded by our love and care for our offspring. If my child is sick, I too want the very best medical care and attention for them. At that time, the fact that it is my wealth and privileged position that makes that care available to me matters not. My only concern is getting that care. It's not a selfish perspective (well, perhaps it is but not maliciously so) but it is very much a case of self-preservation.

But that's where my friend and I differ. I understand the imperative of education and healthcare here and how and why it drives actions within the context of self-preservation. But there is, in my view, a much broader perspective on self-preservation that we, the entitled demographic, ignore at our peril. As things currently stand, society has far greater inequity than at any time in the past few generations. An increasingly tiny proportion of a global elite hold an increasingly large proportion of global wealth.

Not only are the poor growing poorer, but the huge middle ground, those middle classes who fuelled the economic growth of the 1950s and 60s, see their spending power, their autonomy and their voice, rapidly losing ground. Not only are the poor getting poorer, but the average working woman or man is increasingly, in relative terms, poorer than their parents.

And this is where self-preservation comes in. While the elite can afford the very best for themselves and their progeny, to do so absent any thought to creating a more equitable society is dangerous. In a world where there are increasing income, wealth and value gaps in society, we run the risk of also eroding the values that withhold the rule of law and the respect for authority. If we go down that path, we invite the poor and newly poor to revolt - whether it is with force or by seizing the power structures ruled by those elites.

Of course, I can just hear my libertarian friends write me off as some kind of crazy left-wing agitator. But that's not what this is about. I fully recognise my own privilege and the fact that my fortunate position is, at least in part, the result of social and economic inequities. It would be stupid, indeed dangerous, of me to not give thought to those inequities. History is rife with once powerful people who mistakenly assumed that their power would be eternal.

If, through the creation of a more equitable society, I can avoid insurrection utterly destroying my quality of life, I'd be stupid not to. To put it another way I have two choices to give some of what I have to others and to enjoy a still-charmed, albeit slightly less so, life. The other option is to play Russian roulette with an increasingly large and increasingly angry part of society. Russian roulette doesn't appeal at all.

Ben Kepes has never been a gambler, and roulette, let alone Russian roulette, doesn't appeal at all.

Luckiest Roulette Winners of All Time: The Top 3 – Stratford Observer

Posted: at 5:19 am

There are some people who seem to have all the luck in the world. They always seem to be in the right place at the right time, and they always manage to come out on top. These people are often called lucky, but is there really such a thing as luck? Or is it just a matter of being in the right place at the right time? In this blog post, we will take a look at some of historys luckiest roulette winners that will make you wonder how to get the biggest wins in roulette.

1. Chris Boyd $440,000 (1994, Las Vegas)

Chris Boyd was simply an average guy who had won one of the most massive roulette payouts ever. He has a comparable tale to the individual below in that he too decided to go all out in Las Vegas but it wasnt quite like that.

Boyd wagered $220,000 that he was able to save over the course of three years. Most casinos refused to accept such a large single bet payment, but Binions Horseshoe Club accepted it. In typical situations, they would only take bets up to $100,000; however, this was no ordinary day. After all, who wouldnt be suspicious if your average guy showed up to a casino wanted to blow that kind of money in one night?

At the time of this roulette spin, Boyd had placed all $220,000 on red. Much to his surprise, the result of that spin was 7 red, meaning he had just doubled his bet! After such a successful 90s night out in Las Vegas, Boyd cashed out and went home with a whopping $440,000.

2. Sir Philip Green $3.6 million (2004, Mayfair, UK)

British billionaire Sir Philip Green is one of the wealthiest men in the United Kingdom, with a reported net worth of $2.4 billion as of 2021, as reported by Forbes. His fortune comes from multiple businesses that he owns or has an interest in, including Topshop and Arcadia Group. He also invests heavily in real estate around the world and is known as the King of Retail.

Greens massive wealth gives him enough money to buy anything he wants which explains why he was able to bet big when he visited the Mayfair Club in London for some roulette action. On one single spin, he wagered 500,000 (approximately $680,000 at the time) and walked away with a cool 2 million in profit within just a few hours!

While Green may have been celebrating his big win, the casino wasnt so happy about it. In fact, Greens big win hit the casino so hard that they issued a warning to all their customers that they would no longer be able to offer such high table limits. But wait, if you thought this roulette win was crazy, you are in for a surprise with the next one!

3. Charles Wells $11 million (1892, Monte Carlo)

Unlike other winners on this list, Wells was a criminal, known for being a smart conman.

Charles Wells first got his start as a small-time thief in London during the 1860s. After getting caught and doing some time in jail, he moved to France. While many people would be inclined to believe that Wells scammed his way into this big winning, the casino claimed otherwise.

However, what is made clear from the evidence is that Charles Wells was a serial scammer and gambler who often paid off his debts with counterfeit money or by pretending he didnt have any at all! He also had multiple aliases for different casinos throughout Europe so that when people saw him there would be no record of him playing before (or winning).

While Wells may have been lucky on this night, he found himself locked up in prison just 8 years later. Much like many big-time gamblers, Wells found himself broke before dying in poverty in 1922.

Although this story ends suddenly and in a less exciting way, there is no denying that Charles Wells is one of the biggest roulette winners ever recorded that deserves his place on our list.

Final Thoughts

As you can see, these three individuals have some pretty amazing stories (and luck) behind their big roulette payouts. Do any of them inspire you to try your hand at this exciting game? Who knows, we could be seeing your name in the Stratford news! But remember, play safe and know your limits!

Gambler stole 13k from employer and 9k from car garage to play roulette – Stoke-on-Trent Live

Posted: at 5:19 am

Gambling James Pemberton has been jailed after he stole more than 13,000 from his employer.

And while he was being investigated for that offence the 40-year-old pinched more than 9,000 from a family-owned car garage in Hanley.

He admitted he fritted the money away playing roulette.

Now Pemberton has been jailed for 20 months at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court.

More court news here

Prosecutor Danae Larham said the defendant worked at Staff Line employment agency as an account manager for their contract with Sainsbury's.

Miss Larham said: "As part of that he had access to employees' personal and banking details.

"Between September 2, 2018 and October 12, 2018 he amended the bank details of the staff who no longer worked for the agency. He changed the bank details to bank details in his name, either his own account or accounts he had control of.

"He amended the contact details and their time sheets to suggest that they had been working, triggering payments which were paid into his own bank accounts. He did this to 13 employees. He received 13,119.44 of payments into his bank accounts or accounts he had control of.

"As a result of that Staff Line suffered losses due to National Insurance payments having to be made."

Staff Line became aware of the offending when an ex employee struggled to obtain benefits as he was told he was still receiving a wage from them despite leaving in August.

Miss Larham said: "Investigations found the defendant responsible for the payments made to himself."

The defendant went on to commit a second theft between October 29, 2020 and December 10, 2020.

Miss Larham said: "The defendant used a company credit card and stole 9,029.03 from a family run car repair garage.

"On December 10, 2020 the owner received a bank statement which appeared suspicious showing amounts that were lower than expected. He contacted the bank who said transactions using the company's handheld card machines in the form of refunds.

"The owner had never made a refund and his son had not. The only other person who could have made these refunds was the defendant. Whilst not employed there he had been visiting there since October 2020 as he was friends with the owner's son. He told them he had lost his job and was asking to spend time there as his wife did not know about his employment.

"He was never given permission to use the card machine. He held the fort while the owner and son were away.

"There were 14 incidents when the card machine was used, totalling 9,029.03."

In his interview the defendant said he used the money to gamble.

Pemberton, of Trentley Road, Trentham, pleaded guilty to theft by employee and theft.

Paul Cliff, mitigating, said the defendant's mental health played a part in his offending. He said: "It is clear there is some background in relation to mental health problems. He was also engaged in gambling at the time.

"He has been in the Harplands Hospital in the last 12 months and continues to receive treatment."

Mr Cliff asked Judge Paul Glenn to consider suspending the sentence.

But the judge said the offending was too serious to be dealt with in any other way than an immediate jail sentence.

Judge Glenn said: "You were a trusted employee at Staff Line. As an account manager you had access to the personal and banking details of employees. Over a period of about six weeks you amended the details of some members of staff to a number of accounts in your name or controlled by you. Thirteen employees were involved. A little over 13,000 was paid over to you. The loss to Staff Line was approaching 15,000.

"You made admissions in interview. You said you were struggling with finances and you were gambling to try and make up some money.

"While on bail you committed the theft. You utilised the company's credit card machine to pay just over 9,000 into your account - a very significant sum for a family company.

"You had gone there because you had lost your job. In interview you said you gambled the money.

"You seem to have been driven by gambling. You were playing roulette. Your bank account is self-explanatory."

What Did The Gambling of Our Ancestors Look Like? – UrbanMatter

Posted: at 5:18 am

Gambling is one of the oldest recreational activities in the world. The evidence of the activity is seen in ancient writings and playing items have been found in tombs and other places. Gambling was not perceived as a recreational activity back then, it was so important that people had to be curtailed from randomly practicing it. Our ancestors had a good taste for their games and they passed it on to us. It is probably why we have such a vibrant community of gamers.

For casino lovers, a good online casino review will always answer the main questions and give you full information about all the peculiarities of the platform. You need to know critical details about a site, which include the game variety, software providers, customer care, payment options, licensing info, and more before you choose a casino. Once all these are fantastic, you can proceed to choose the ones with the best bonuses and promotions.

Gambling was considered divine by our ancestors. The main objects were marked sticks and other objects, which can be compared to the dice of recent times. They were thrown up and the outcome would be used to predict the future. It was also seen as a way of getting communication or the intentions of the gods. The Bible, for instance, has instances where lots were cast to divide the property. When Jesus was crucified, the guards cast lots for his clothes. This has been a source of castigation of gambling by Christians. It was not only a way of dividing property but also a way of predicting luck or fate. Therefore, the dictionary meaning of casino gambling would not befit the activity that our ancestors practiced. Studies show that gambling often took place among the spiritual communities that believed in the supremacy of certain gods.

This activity was so important that it was even used to pass judgment to people suspected of doing various crimes. The criminals would be paraded and lots would be cast to identify who made the crime. Once identified, punishment would be carried out without any other form of trial. This is how crucial gambling was to our ancestors.

Many societies regulated gambling in one way or another. They include the following:

The activity was curtailed by the law since it had a lot of meaning. Contrary to the modern times where gambling is considered a recreational activity, our ancestors perceived it as a divine activity. It was meant to obtain certain communications from the gods, hence, it needed to be reserved for the privileged in society.

Some of these communities had specific people who would cast the lots or the dice and interpret the message that the gods were trying to pass. These diviners would be the judges in criminal cases and were responsible for offering wise counsel to the leaders. However, some of our ancestors had a blanket ban on gambling. In Ancient Egypt, for instance, gamblers would be forced to work in the quarries as punishment. The ancient city of Rome had also banned the activity and the penalty was a fine of four times your bet. The European society of the past also had a lot of contempt for gambling. There are various texts, decrees, edicts, and encyclicals that condemn gambling. This could also be used to predict how popular the activity was. Society can only condemn an activity that is already taking place and was probably causing negative effects on the people.

There have been shreds of evidence of gambling through history that prove that our ancestors practiced it. The practice must have taken place throughout history but we are only limited to the events that we can prove. Farther in the article you will find the prooved shreds of evidence known nowadays.

Ancient China is home to the earliest evidence of gambling. Tiles were discovered and they are believed to have been used for a gambling game around 2300bc. The Chinese Book of Songs also mentions the drawing of wood, which could mean that the tiles were used for a certain lottery-like game. These pieces of evidence suggest that lotteries may have been used to fund huge state projects, possibly even the Great Wall of China. The same was further demonstrated in later times where great universities like Harvard were constructed using lotteries.

Dice are also believed to have existed in this era. Sophocles, a Greek poet, claimed that they were created by a mythological individual during the siege of Troy. The first mention of dice can be traced to around 500bc. However, it is wrong to claim that the dice were invented in this era because there is evidence that they existed much earlier, around 3000bc. Nevertheless, the love for gambling among the Romans and Greeks is obvious. As aforementioned, gambling has been banned, and violating this would lead to a fine. The Romans decided to circumvent this ban by inventing gambling chips. Hence, when they were caught, they would claim to be playing for chips and not real money.

The first sign of cards is believed to have appeared in this era. Studies show that they were seen in China but the rules of the game remain unknown. The cards appeared in China in the 9th Century even though they dont resemble the modern card games that we have now.

Our ancestors in Italy show the earliest signs of modern card games that are currently played. Baccarat, a 2-player game, had a version that was first seen around the 1400th. Its concept migrated from Italy to France. However, the rules of the game do not resemble the current game. It is believed that the standard version got its inspiration from Cuba and migrated to the US via Britain. Some of the modern variations of the game that are currently available include:

Nowadays you can easily find an amazing casino for the best experience. Reading reliable online gambling reviews will help you to join a fantastic casino that offers this game as well as many others. You can also check game reviews to learn about the games and the betting ranges. Even though this game is criticized for being a bit basic, it is quite popular among gamblers.

Blackjack was first mentioned in the 1600th by an author by name Don Quixote. The game is believed to have originated from Ventiuna, a Spanish game that was mentioned in the book. However, other games are also believed to be related to this game. The Ventiuna is not the version that inspires the modern version of the game. The modern version was obtained from vingt-et-un, which was played in France. It migrated to the US from France when the early settlers moved there. The Americans converted the name to Blackjack in the 1930th during a promotion.

The 1600th also witnessed the mushrooming of the first establishments that are comparable to the current casinos. The first casino appeared in Italy where Ridotto was built in Venice to provide a gambling hub for the people during the festivals. The rest of Europe had a lot of activity in the 19th Century. In the US also illegal gambling houses were springing up at around this time.

Roulette originated in this era. It began in the betting houses of Paris, France where the roulette wheel with double zero was prominent. Even though it was first seen in this era, the games popularity hit its peak when it was launched in the Monte Carlo casino. About fifty years after the invention of the roulette wheel, the European wheel with a single zero was invented. It spread across Europe and the entire world and became quite popular when it finally got into Monte Carlo.

The fascinating thing is that the American roulette wheel did not come from America. It was the first version that was made in France. However, the unique thing is that the Americans stuck with the earlier version even when the rest of the world preferred the later version. What are the differences between American and European roulette?

The last point explains why the world preferred the European version. Unfortunately, the Americans stuck with the wrong deal in their insatiable thirst for originality.

Our ancestors kept progressing as the years went by and the 1800th saw evidence of some of the most popular games that are played to date. Poker does not have an exact point of origin. However, in 1829, Joseph Crowell, an English actor, states that he had seen such a game in New Orleans. Hence, it is convenient to state that it was the first sign of poker.

Poker did not experience rapid growth in popularity until the 1970th when poker tournaments started taking place. Online poker further accelerated its growth and more people took interest. Currently, poker is among the most popular games across the continents.

Slots can also trace their origin to this era. Messrs Sittman and Pitt built the first game in New York that resembled a slot machine. Around the same time, Charles Fey created the Liberty Bell slot, which inspired the current slots. This explains why the bell symbol is popular in modern slots. However, Fey did not patent his innovation, hence, many people created similar machines. Slots became quite common in bars until various legislations influenced the way they are played. At some point, it was illegal to use real money, which forced the innovators to replace money with other prizes like candies or chips.

This era experienced tremendous growth in the gambling industry. The first video slot was created in the 1970th and other innovations followed suit. A breakthrough was the advent of online casinos in the 90th. It was the beginning of the growth of the gambling industry that has made it a multibillion-dollar industry.

The gambling of our ancestors was interesting. It transitioned from being a divine activity that is used to predict serious events to a fun activity meant for entertainment. The forms of gambling also changed gradually to what we have now. We should appreciate our ancestors for the amazing gambling activities we enjoy now.

Lets face it: Supplementsas common as they arecan be confusing. Even if you know your vitamin Cs from your Ds, you may benefit from a refresher course on which to take, and what they can do for you. To get up to speed, take a walk with us through the virtual vitamin aisle.

TrueYou Mighty Strong Plant-Based Calcium

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body and makes up the structure of your bones and teeth. This mineral helps with blood vessel dilation and contraction, blood clotting, muscle function, nerve transmission, and hormone secretion, says Brittany Michels, MS, RDN, LDN, registered dietitian at The Vitamin Shoppe. Women 50 and younger need 1000mg of calcium daily, while women over 50 require 1,200 mg of calcium daily. Consider supplementation if your dietary intake is low. Michels recommends TrueYou Mighty Strong Organic Calcium, which also includes vitamin D and magnesiumresearch has shown adequate levels of magnesium help your body absorb vitamin D and calcium.

TrueYou Head Over Heels Enhanced Collagen Powder

While calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body, collagen is the most abundant protein. You may know it for having hair and skin benefits, but the mineral actually makes up the structure of our hair, skin, nails, joints, bones, cartilage, tendons, and gut.

Since the amount of collagen in the body decreases as you age, supplements are an important option, according to Michels. Bone broth is a wonderful dietary source of collagen, and TrueYou Head Over Heels Enhanced Collagen Peptides is another good choice. The blend of collagen peptides and hyaluronic acid purports to maintain healthy and hydrated skin and nails. It may also help keep estrogen levels in balance, she says.

TrueYou Cool As a Cuke Stress & Mood Support

In addition to providing a calming effectmaking it a helpful before-bed additionmagnesium is a mineral thats needed in more than 300 processes in the body. They include helping with blood pressure and blood sugar management, nerve function, and immune support.

Stress and lack of sleep can deplete levels in your body, and low magnesium levels have been shown to lead to an increase in a C-reactive protein (an inflammatory marker).

Food sources of magnesium include leafy greens, almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, and black beans. Women who are unable to meet needs via their diet should consider supplementation, Michels says. The TrueYou Cool as a Cuke Stress & Mood Support includes magnesium as well as adaptogens (ashwagandha and lemon balm) that counteract the negative effects of stress on hormones.

Omega-3 Fish Oil with Vitamin D3

Omega 3s support heart, brain, mood, joint, and overall health. Not all omega 3s are the same, however. Active omega 3 dietary sources (EPA and DHA) include seafood and algae, Michels says. Inactive omega 3 dietary sources (ALAthese need to be converted into EPA and DHA by your body) include flax seed oil, flax seeds, chia seeds, hemp hearts and walnuts.

If youre not getting enough omega 3s in your diet, consider supplementing. To meet baseline needs, aim for one of the following or a combo of these: two to three servings of low-mercury seafood (like sardines or shrimp) weekly or a minimum of 1,200 to 2,000 mg daily of combined DHA and EPA in an omega 3 fish oil or algae omega supplement, Michels says.

Vitamin D

This fat-soluble vitamin is one of the most important for healthy bones. It's also commonly one that women are deficient in. Of its countless functions, Vitamin Dfound in fatty fish, egg yolks, mushrooms, and milkis responsible for turning on and off our immune system and powering the body. Low levels of vitamin D are also linked to anxiety, depression, decreased pancreatic function, and hormonal influences, Michels says.

Delayed Release Probiotics

Probiotics are the beneficial bacteria found in your gut. Specific probiotic strains are linked to the health of key areas in the body, such as our immune system, digestive health, respiratory health and mental health, Michels says.

Your guts bacteria balance can be thrown off by many factors, including, but not limited to, unmanaged stress, antibiotic usage, and digestive disorders, Michels says, which is why taking a probiotic may be helpful.

TrueYou Perfect Ensemble Once Daily Multivitamin

Made it through the virtual aisle and feeling overwhelmed? Multivitamins are your best friend. A multivitamin is the most comprehensive supplement option for those desiring full nutrient coverage, Michels says. They are designed to fulfill potential nutritional gaps in the diet.

Multivitamins have been traditionally used as supplements along with diet to improve nutritional qualities and lower health problems, like osteoporosis and arthritis. With the onset of COVID, there has been a public notion that vitamins could reduce the severity of symptoms (although it is not a cure) for COVID. Manufacturers of multivitamins are capitalizing on this and the demand for multivitamins has increased since 2020. Overall, thevitamins and dietary supplements marketis expected to expand at a CAGR of 4.9% from 2020 to 2025. However, as time progresses, these myths have been debunked by several studies. For example, NCBI has published articles stating that CBD-based supplements are not a cure for coronavirus or any other maladies caused due to the infection of coronavirus.

One of the recent trends witnessed in the market is the entrance of vitamin and dietary supplement manufacturers into the food and snacks business. For example, Chinese dietary supplement provider BY-HEALTH is investing in product diversity and is segregating its products between food and snacks with light functionalities and supplements with strong functionalities. Protein bars have become the choice of snack for such dietary supplement suppliers. The company, by the end of 2020, has received filing approvals for 112 health foods and registration approvals for over 140 health foods.
