AI-driven Congruence Therapeutics gets $50M to stabilize misfolded proteins – MedCity News

Posted: at 2:07 am

For proteins to function properly, they must take on the right shape. Misfolded proteins are the root of many diseases. Congruence Therapeutics is using computational tools to discover and develop drugs that stabilize problem proteins and its now out of stealth with $50 million in funding.

The Series A round of funding announced Tuesday was led by Amplitude Ventures and Fonds de solidarit FTQ.

Montreal-based Congruence uses mathematical modeling, physics, and machine learning to characterize the defects of misfolded proteins. The companys platform technology, called Revenir, designs small molecules that can rescue these mutated proteinsresearch that is all done on computers. The biotech contends its approach can discover and design novel small molecule stabilizers faster and at scale compared to traditional drug discovery methods.

Congruence was founded last year by CEO Clarissa Desjardins, who was the founder and former chief executive of Montreal-based Clementia Pharmaceuticals. In 2019, Ipsen acquired Clementia and its lead program, a drug for a rare bone disease. Congruence has not disclosed the therapeutic areas it aims to address, other than to say it is pursuing indications with high unmet medical need. Concurrent with that research, Congruence said it is also building a database housing the biophysical properties of mutated proteins, which can be used to develop stabilizes for diseases caused by proteins that are outside of the companys focus.

Our industry faces a watershed moment where the application of novel computational tools, including machine learning, is poised to disrupt traditional drug discovery, Desjardins said in a prepared statement.

Congruence said it will use the new funding to build up its drug hunting team. In addition to the financing, Congruent announced that Kenneth Valenzano has been appointed chief scientific officer. Valenzano was most recently senior vice president of drug discovery at Amicus Therapeutics, a rare disease drug developer whose first commercialized product, Galafold, is a small molecule designed to stabilize a key enzyme as a way of treating Fabry disease, an inherited metabolic disorder. At Amicus, Valenzano was involved in the discovery and development of Galafold and other small molecules.

Other disclosed investors participating in the funding round include Lumira Ventures, Investissement Quebec, OrbiMed Advisors, Driehaus Capital Management.

Scaling Throughput with AI-driven Insurance Claim Processing – MarketScale

Posted: at 2:07 am

The successful use of AI for insurance claim processing depends on identifying and optimizing the performance of hardware and software tools that increase its efficiency, flexibility, and speed. Vasant Kearney, Ph.D., CTO of Retrace Labs, and Ravi Panchumarthy, Ph.D., Machine Learning Engineer at Intel Corporation spoke about the specific challenges faced by the dental industry when it uses cloud-based AI computing to process claims, and the creative innovations that Intel and Retrace have developed to address those challenges.

The thing that makes AI-driven insurance claim processing challenging is the throughput, Kearney says. If youre in a single hospital or small clinic, scalability isnt much of an issue. But once you move into the insurance world where the volume is much higher you have to manage spikes in throughput. The ability of the AI algorithms being used to manage these spikes (scaling performance up or down based on demand) is determined by how much compute has been allocated to solving the problem. This is where the choice of hardware and software becomes critical.

Most data scientists are familiar with GPUs and choose them when deploying models in production. But GPUs can be costly and create delays due to the way they handle memory and how they are deployed onto scalable tools. Its not trivial to share memory between GPUs, says Kearney. So, youre limited by the rather low-memory footprint of each GPU. In AWS, you have GPUs in the range of 12 gigabytes. But CPUs can get up into the terabytes. This means that many more models can be stored on each instance, making CPUs ideal for healthcare where many different models are often needed to make diagnoses.

Both Panchumarthy and Kearney are excited about the future of AI-driven cloud computing for the insurance industry. There is great synergy between cloud computing and cutting-edge hardware and software solutions from Retrace and Intel, says Panchumarthy. All of these are helping drive even more intelligent and robust medical AI solutions. Its an exciting place to be.

How one firm takes insurer’s AI to the next level – Insurance Business

Posted: at 2:07 am

It takes a couple of people and the process takes about two hours, Singer explained.

Robust is based in San Francisco and launched in 2019, founded by Harvard University academics Kojin Oshiba and Singer (pictured, left to right). The San Francisco-based insurtech describes itself as an AI security and reliability start-up. Translated, its AI-base helps sift out errors in other AI technology or related data models before they go into production and are used.

Customers come from industry areas including insurance, medical devices, cruise companies, genome analysis firms, travel industry outfits and neobanks (banks that operate online without traditional physical branch networks).

Approximately 50 people work for Robust, which has raised more than $45 million in venture capital financing to date.

Robust announced in May that it would partner with Tokio Marine with the idea of protecting its AI systems from unintentional data input/contamination that can lead to unexpected and incorrect results.

Masashi Namatame, Tokio Marine Groups chief digital officer, noted in prepared remarks that the company uses AI in various business areas including claims services, product recommendations and customer support. He said the company is committed to working with Robust to manage corresponding AI risks and vulnerabilities that are otherwise very hard to recognize.

Together, the companies are also focusing on jointly researching and developing products to boost AI security. The deal calls for a broader look at AI security in the Japanese market and the global insurance industry.

In terms of the initial software partnership, Singer said there were several months of discussions before an agreement. Then came the signing of a production license with Tokio Marine before a few Robust engineers installing the software, starting with Tokio Marine dR.

Engineers completed the initial process within about two hours, leaving the option to expand usage into other departments over time.

One can basically create more and more instances of that software within the company to serve more teams, Singer explained.

In the meanwhile, Robust offers customer support as needed.

Its completely out of the box, Singer said.

AI technology partnerships with big companies can often be more complex and time-consuming, Singer acknowledged.

A lot of times integration costs are very high there is a lot of back and forth, a lot of manual installation, Singer said. The product weve created is almost like zero integration. Its very easy to use and automates a lot of the processes that data scientists normally do and use.

As Singer explains it, organizations using AI technology typically have data scientists on staff, with some focused on debugging models - checking models before they go into production and regularly assessing whether edits are needed. Robusts software does that automatically.

One of the biggest selling points for any company is the fact that were able to reduce that overhead from the data science teams, Singer said. Were able to have the data science teams become 25% to 40% more effective because they no longer have to do these things.

Employee take-up of the software is immediate, Singer said.

Software for offices and personal devices alike needs period technology updates, and the same thing is true with Robust.

You always have to continue developing [and] look for more things, Singer said.

That means identifying new AI-related threats or errors to check for, and then updating the technology accordingly. Singer said the company issues a new release every six weeks.

Depending on the contract that we have with an organization, we make the updates available for customers if they wish, he said.

As insurers and other industries keep turning to AI for at least some parts of their operations, demand could rise for companies such as Robust to help sift out errors those systems can unintentionally generate, Singer said.

As more and more companies are relying on AI to help them automate decision-making, the risks increase, Singer said, there really needs to be testing as well as a safeguard right on these [AI] models, and thats exactly what Robust Intelligence provides.

NHS England works with Ada Lovelace Institute to tackle AI bias in healthcare – ComputerWeekly.com

Posted: at 2:07 am

NHS England is working with the Ada Lovelace Institute to pilot algorithmic impact assessments (AIAs) in healthcare. The Ada Lovelace Institute defines AIA as a tool for assessing possible societal impacts of an algorithmic system before the system is in use.

NHS England said the pilot, run by NHS AI lab, will be used as part of the data access process for the National Covid-19 Chest Imaging Database (NCCID) and the proposed National Medical Imaging Platform (NMIP).

While artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to support health and care workers to deliver better care for people, it could also exacerbate existing health inequalities if concerns such as algorithmic bias arent accounted for. In what is believed to be a world first for AI adoption in healthcare, the trials goal is to ensure potential risks such as algorithm biases are addressed before they can access NHS data.

Through the trial, NHS AI Lab said that it will support researchers and developers to engage patients and healthcare professionals at an early stage of AI development when there is greater flexibility to make adjustments and respond to concerns.

Brhmie Balaram, head of AI research and ethics at the NHS AI Lab, hopes that supporting patient and public involvement as part of the development process will lead to improvements in patient experience and the clinical integration of AI.

Building trust in the use of AI technologies for screening and diagnosis is fundamental if the NHS is to realise the benefits of AI, said Balaram. Through this pilot, we hope to demonstrate the value of supporting developers to meaningfully engage with patients and healthcare professionals much earlier in the process of bringing an AI system to market.

NHS AI Lab commissioned The Ada Lovelace Institute to provide a guide on how to use an AIAs in the real-world. It is designed to help developers and researchers consider and account for the potential impacts of proposed technologies on people, society and the environment.

The sample version of the process guide, available to download from its website, provides step-by-step guidance for project teams seeking access to imaging data from the NMIP. It outlines how to conduct an algorithmic impact assessment (AIA) for their project.

The guide is aimed at designers, developers, data scientists and product or research managers working on products and data models that need to use NMIP imaging data. It covers accountability, transparency, record keeping and critical dialogue on how the design and development of the system might result in particular harms and benefits.

Octavia Reeve, interim lead at the Ada Lovelace Institute, said: Algorithmic impact assessments have the potential to create greater accountability for the design and deployment of AI systems in healthcare, which can in turn build public trust in the use of these systems, mitigate risks of harm to people and groups, and maximise their potential for benefit. We hope that this research will generate further considerations for the use of AIAs in other public and private-sector contexts.

Innovation minister Syed Kamall said: While AI has great potential to transform health and care services, we must tackle biases which have the potential to do further harm to some populations as part of our mission to eradicate health disparities.

This pilot once again demonstrates the UK is at the forefront of adopting new technologies in a way that is ethical and patient-centred.

Artist Hidreley Diao uses artificial intelligence to recreate real-life Disney characters, and more (hidreley, Instagram)

Estimated read time: 2-3 minutes

SPRINGFIELD The "Have You Seen This?" articles are usually reserved for great videos. But every once in a while there is something so cool, so interesting, that no video is needed but you still have to see it.

Today is one of those rare occasions.

Have you ever wondered what Ned Flanders or Moe Syslak would look like in real life? Did it ever cross your mind what Ariel or Rapunzel would look like if you saw them walking down the street? Or maybe you've been curious what it would be like to meet Carl Fredrickson in person? Wonder no more, because we now have a pretty strong idea thanks to artist Hidreley Diao.

According to Diao's Instagram bio, he is a contributor for the online art magazine, Bored Panda. The Brazilian artist started experimenting with artificial intelligence and found he could recreate lifelike images of cartoon characters and started to get to work.

On his Instagram page, Diao has portraits of everyone from Dash in "The Incredibles," to the Statue of Liberty. These portraits are mesmerizing, and it's far too easy to fall into a black hole of time-wasting as you scroll and click on every single image.

Some of my favorites include Milhouse from "the Simpsons," composer Frdric Chopin, and the female pharaoh Hatsheput.

Take a look at the portraits, but do yourself a favor: do it when you have some time and your boss won't catch you, because you'll be stuck browsing for awhile.

Transhumanism: The Plot to Control Your Life! Jonathan …

Posted: at 2:06 am

If our world is not on a direct path to the fulfillment of Revelation 13:16-18, the only alternative is to assume that something with a striking and most uncanny resemblance to the mark of the beast will appear in the not-too-distant future.

In other words, if what the transhumanist propose for our world is not the prelude to the mark of the beast, then I do not know what would be. Their plans for the future fit like a glove with what the apostle John wrote about the mark of the beast.

The words of Revelation 13:16-18 represent a specific, detailed prophecy and that cannot reach its full fruition until after the antichrist begins his reign of terror during the seven-year tribulation. Even so, we already see Satans evil and deadly end-of-days design for humanity at work in the plans of those who seek to impose transhumanism upon us.

Why do I say that this prophecy is already in play? Continue reading as I make my case in this post and those that follow.

Transhumanism is the combining of machines and human beings.

David Tippett, a contributor to the World Economic Forum (WEF) website, described transhumanism in this way:

It is rooted in the belief that humans can and will be enhanced by the genetic engineering and information technology of today, as well as anticipated advances, such as bioengineering, artificial intelligence, and molecular nanotechnology. The result is an iteration of Homo sapiens enhanced or augmented, but still fundamentally human.

The central premise of transhumanism, then, is that biological evolution will eventually be overtaken by advances in genetic, wearable and implantable technologies that artificially expedite the evolutionary process.[i]

The globalists of our day propose to fundamentally change humanity through means that include the changing of the human DNA (i.e., nanotechnology). Contrary to what the WEF would have us believe, the end result of this artificial biological evolution will be something far different than what God created as well as what Jesus died on the cross to redeem.

Dr. Carrie Madej, in her April 19, 2021 video, defined transhumanism in a similar way as in the above quote, but also warned of its many dire consequences for our future as the elite of the world seek to exercise complete control of our behavior.[ii]

In November of 2017, an article appeared on the Forbes website with this title: Transhumanism and The Future of Humanity: 7 Ways the World Will Change By 2030. Here is a quote from the introduction of this article:

This transformation will be messy, complex, and sometimes scary, but signals already point to a future of humanity that will blur our identities into transhumanism.[iii]

Several disturbing statements regarding transhumanism emerge from this Forbes 2017 article. The assertion of the author that transhumanism will blur our identities, however, shocks me the most. It confirms the planned merging of machines with our bodies would remove what makes us human.

Lest you think that transhumanism is just the aspiration of a few mad scientists, please know that many of the most powerful and wealthy people in the world openly support the combining of humans and machines as the next step in the evolutionary process. This concept finds its most fervent and outspoken support in the WEF. Its website contains an abundance of information on the combining of humans with machines.

Please know that the WEF is not some obscure fringe group. President Biden ran for office under the theme of Build Back Better; a slogan he took directly from the WEF as an indication of his support for its agenda. John Kerry, a prominent member of Bidens administration, has pledged the full support of the Biden administration to the Great Reset championed by the WEF.

An article on the New American website ties together the Great Reset advocated by the WEF and the Biden administration with the push for transhumanism:

Under the new world order envisioned by the proponents of the United Nations-backed Great Reset, humans will be merged with machines and technology. Literally. Perhaps most incredibly, the Deep State globalists behind the efforts are coming out of the closet. These days, they are openly and literally proclaiming their intention to abolish private ownership of property and even fuse microchips into peoples brains that will be able to read and manipulate individuals thoughts.[iv]

Please read the preceding quote again. It aptly summarizes my research and correctly connects the Great Reset of the WEF with its push for transhumanism through which it will read and manipulate the thoughts of those under it domain.

Notice also the reference to the deep state in the United States in the preceding quote; this refers to those in the U.S. who put Biden in office and now control his presidency. These elite globalists in the U.S. and throughout the world talk openly about their plans for both transhumanism and the Great Reset.

Consider this quote from the WEF website regarding the changes they plan for our world under what the WEF calls the Fourth Industrial Revolutions, their term for transhumanism:

The Fourth Industrial Revolution represents a fundamental change in the way we live, work and relate to one another. It is a new chapter in human development, enabled by extraordinary technology advances commensurate with those of the first, second and third industrial revolutions. These advances are merging the physical, digital and biological worlds in ways that create both huge promise and potential peril. The speed, breadth and depth of this revolution is forcing us to rethink how countries develop, how organisations create value and even what it means to be human.[v]

Though it may sound benign on the surface, the purpose of the Fourth Industrial Revolution is not to benefit humanity, no, not at all. Its the vehicle through which the WEF, along with globalists at the United Nations and in America, hope to force people into accepting a tyrannical and Marxist government through which they intend to control the lives of everyone on the planet.

The Great Reset agenda necessitates augmenting humans in such a way that will allow those in power to monitor and control their behavior via external computer networks and artificial intelligence.

How will these powerbrokers augment the makeup of human beings so as to merge them with machines? To answer that question, we begin with the words of Klaus Schwab of the WEF. In a January 10, 2016 interview, he explained that human beings will soon receive a chip in their body in order to merge [them] with the digital world. Below is another excerpt from this interview:

Schwab: And at first, we will implant them in our clothes. And then we could imagine that we will implant them in our brains, or in our skin. And in the end, maybe, here will be a direct communication between our brain and the digital world. What we see is a kind of fusion of the physical, digital, and biological world.

Interviewer: We call someone, we dont even have the reflex to take a device, its done naturally, the technique continues in the body. Schwab: Yes.

Interviewer: When will happen? Schwab: Certainly in the next ten years.[vi]

The following two points sum up the essence of transhumanism:

The process includes augmenting humans into something quite different than what God created as well as implanting a device inside them that will connect them to the digital world outside them.

The plan consists of connecting humans to the digital world, such as a supercomputer, that will monitor their behavior for the ultimate purpose of controlling it through the blending of people with machines.

At this point, however, it appears that these globalists might have a problem.

How do they put such a system in place? The vast majority of people would readily reject the changes that I have described in this post and rightly so. Some might desire the enhanced artificial intelligence that will come as the result of transhumanism, but not everything else that would come with it.

In part 2 of this series entitled Transhumanism: Is It Already Here? I will describe the deceitful plan of the transhumanists that they intend to use in augmenting human beings into something currently unrecognizable. Please keep reading as I continue to connect the dots.

What is Technocracy and why does it matter? Hint …

Posted: at 2:06 am

Note: Patrick Wood is the worlds foremost expert of technocracy, where it comes from, how it works, and where its leading us in 2022 and beyond. Patricks article below puts it all in perspective. He is also holding a livestream event Thursday, Jan. 13, at 8 p.m. ET. The topic isPROPAGANDA what it is, how you can recognize it and most importantly, what you can do about it. Presenting along with Patrick will be my friend and fellow journalist Alex Newman. A Q&A will follow. This is a perfect opportunity to host a small gathering in your home to bring others into the conversation and get them educated. Here are the details and the action button to RSVP.

By Patrick Wood of Technocracy.News

If society must be transformed into Technocracy, then the humans who live there must be transformed into Transhumans. In other words, a perfectly efficient, utopian society envisioned by Technocrats would be quickly soiled if it were inhabited by weak-minded and imperfect humans in their present form.

This is exactly why we see many Technocrats who also identify as Transhumans. Some well-known names that come to mind include Elon Musk (Tesla), Jeff Bezos (Amazon), Ray Kurzweil (Google) and Peter Thiel (PayPal).

To grasp this larger picture, it is necessary to address three questions:

In 1939,The Technocratmagazine wrote:

Technocracy is the science of social engineering, the scientific operation of the entire social mechanism to produce and distribute goods and services to the entire population.

The magazine went on to explain that Technocracy eschewed capitalism, free enterprise, elected politicians and that it sought to create a resource-based economic system where scientists, engineers and technicians would be the sole planners and controllers of society.

Many Technocrats today have no idea of the deeper goals of Technocracy but nevertheless use their expertise to run portions of society without any regard for Americas traditional political processes. Rule by experts isarule, but it is only one subservient part of the overarching goal of replacing our current economic system with Sustainable Development, aka Technocracy, Green Economy, Green New Deal, etc.

One modern champion of Transhumanism, Dr. Max More, wrote:

Transhumanism is a loosely defined movement that has developed gradually over the past two decades. Transhumanism is a class of philosophies of life that seek the continuation and acceleration of the evolution of intelligent life beyond its currently human form and human limitations by means of science and technology, guided by life-promoting principles and values.(Max More, 1990)

Transhumans seek to apply advanced technology to the condition of man in order to take over the evolutionary process and literally create Humans 2.0. The holy grail of Transhumanism is to achieve immortality, but in the process they intend to weed out the more negative characteristics of Humans 1.0: their warlike nature and their tendency to be argumentative, inconsistent, unreliable, etc. This is genetic cleansing on the largest possible scale.

Scientism is a religious proposition that was first presented by the French philosopher Henri De Saint-Simon (1760-1825). He wrote,

A scientist, my dear friends, is a man who foresees; it is because science provides the means to predict that it is useful, and the scientists are superior to all other men.

While true science explores the natural world using the time-tested scientific method of repeated experimentation and validation, Saint-Simons Scientism is a speculative, metaphysical worldview about the nature and reality of the universe and mans relation to it.

Saint-Simon proposed that the religious leadership of his day should literally be replaced by a priesthood of scientists and engineers, who would interpret the oracle of science in order to make declarations to society on the human actions necedssary to lead mankind to Utopia. Thus, science would be elevated to a state of immutable godhood, worshiped by its followers, who are led by its priests.

Technocracy and Transhumanism are both based on Scientism.

Both believe that advanced science, engineering and technology are the exclusive instruments of progress. Both are adept at promising benefits that are always just around the corner, but that never materialize. Both are expert at manipulating governments to supply taxpayer resources to fund their respective projects. Both believe they are hijacking evolutionary processes to create a future engineered by technologists.

An even more substantive connection between Technocracy and Transhumanism is that they both see no future for the world as it exists today. Radical environmentalists like Greta Thunberg believe the world has only 12 years left before a climate apocalypse destroys us all. Elon Musk uses his billions to escape Earth by funding his SpaceX rocket company with the ultimate intent of colonizing Mars. Jeff Bezos privately funds his Blue Origin for the same purpose to colonize Mars. They both have stated that the only future for mankind is in outer space, populating the cosmos because Earth is going to hit a dead end when its natural resources run out.

In short, Technocracy and Transhumanism are both anti-human. Technocracy, channeled by the United Nations as Sustainable Development, believes that the earth can only support one billion or so humans. Furthermore, all humans are considered as mere resources on a par with herd animals such as cattle. Transhumanism believes Humanity 1.0 is as good as dead and the only hope for the future of man is for Transhuman scientists to invent Humanity 2.0 and leave Earth altogether.

In one sense, Technocracys strict allocation of resources and energy only mark a containment pattern while they build and test space travel technology.

This is not new thinking. In 1872 Winwood Reade wroteThe Martyrdom of Manin which he stated as clearly as any modern Transhumanist or Technocrat could:

Disease will be extirpated; the causes of decay will be removed; immortality will be invented. And then, the earth being small, mankind will migrate into space, and will cross the airless Saharas which separate planet from planet, and sun from sun. The earth will become a Holy Land which will be visited by pilgrims from all the quarters of the universe. Finally, men will master the forces of Nature; they will become themselves architects of systems, manufacturers of worlds.

These bodies which now we wear belong to the lower animals; our minds have already outgrown them; already we look upon them with contempt. A time will come when Science will transform them by means which we cannot conjecture, and which, even if explained to us, we could not now understand, just as the savage cannot understand electricity, magnetism, steam.(p. 179)

In light of the above, I hope you realize that you simply cannot look at Technocrats and Transhumanists and pin labels on them like Marxist, Socialist, Communist or Fascist. Transhumanists and Technocrats represent a new type of radicalness that the world has never seen before.

It means nothing when people gather to discuss philosophical issues and new ways of doing things, unless they have the means to do what they claim. Jeff Bezos isnt waiting for NASA to colonize Mars; he is building his own spaceship with his own money. Likewise, Elon Musk is self-funding his own space fleet. The late global financier, David Rockefeller, didnt wait for governments to flesh out a new economic order, but rather used his own funds to create the Trilateral Commission with its own economic transformations.

Thanks to the United Nations adoption of Technocracy as Sustainable Development, its Agenda 21 policies have been spread to every corner of the planet, including every town and county in America. In total ignorance of the trap being laid for them, people are now demanding more, not less. Global warming is being used as the battering ram to break down the current economic system, paving the way for the only alternative being offered: Sustainable Development, aka Technocracy.

Lest you think that the scientific elite are benevolent pure-hearted idealists simply working for the betterment of mankind, I would caution you to remember the late Jeffrey Epstein, who plumbed the depths of depravity, debauchery, sex trafficking and blackmail and who was also a member of the elitist Trilateral Commission for several years. Epstein was a Technocrat and Transhumanist who hoped to achieve eternal life within his lifetime. Alas, he failed.

To use the word radical to describe Technocracy and Transhumanism would be a gross understatement. They are both outside the bounds of objective reality. And worse, they are dragging the rest of us along with them.

Transitions Film Festival 2022 Using The Power Of Film For Positive Future Change – scenestr

Posted: at 2:06 am

Since 2012, Transitions Film Festival has showcased short, feature and VR documentaries addressing our world, and those helping to shape it and make it better through social, environmental and technological innovations. One of the ongoing missions of Transitions and its curated selection of films is to help us envision a better world, and think about what we can do to make that vision come true and this year, across its more than 20 virtual sessions available nationwide (and a small selection of Melbourne screenings), the festival continues that.

There are examples of the power of activism, food, technology and nature across the programme, and an emphasis on the greatest threats facing humanity. There's an intimate portrait of an environmental activist. . . A fictional narrative legal drama. . . An illumination of humans' relationship with water. . . And a warning about economic collapse with rising temperatures. That's just some of the 2022 Transitions offering.

Let's fight for the future we want.

Festival Director Daniel Simons gives us more information about the 2022 event.

Tell us a bit about the 2022 Transitions Film Festival. The Transitions Film Festival is a social and environmental impact festival that uses the power of film to highlight the biggest and most urgent issues of our time. We focus on showcasing solutions to society's greatest challenges, as well as the mind-blowing technological innovations that have the potential to change life as we know it. This years festival covers our usual themes of climate change, artificial intelligence, transhumanism, environmental activism, social enterprise, regenerative agriculture and the power of music to change the world. Due to COVID, we are mostly online, with all films available nationally, but were also hosting a handful of free screenings in Melbourne, including one at The Capitol Theatre on 20 February.

As Festival Director, what is it that you set out to achieve every year you present it? Festivals like ours can play a vital role in a number of ways. We curate a small selection of films from a huge number of entries, so the audience knows that the films we select deserve their attention. We focus on films that are about the most important issues of our time and we highlight content that is on the cutting-edge of science, innovation and social change. We also aim for the festival to create massive changes in peoples lives and to bring them into the environmental and changemaker eco-systems of Australia. Importantly, the festivals focus on solutions and the heroes creating change around the world gives people hope and a feeling of empowerment at a time when other news media is filled with narratives of doom and hopelessness. With so much entertainment out there, people can be hesitant to watch important documentaries like the ones we feature as part of our programme. Having the films featured in a festival is often an impetus for time-poor and overwhelmed people to watch films that they would not otherwise choose to watch. Then, like a cold shower, they dont want to get in at first, they come out feeling invigorated, alive and ready to take on the world.

And why do you think a festival like Transitions is important to witness? If you look at the recent reaction to Dont Look Up which was the second highest debut Netflix movie of all time getting 360 million hours of viewing in its first 28 days you know people are hungry for change. The problem with 'Dont Look Up' and other Hollywood films that deal with climate change and other social and environmental issues, is that they can be cynical and demoralising. Festivals like ours give hope and show the amazing range of solutions we have at our disposal and ready to deploy now. If enough people know about these ideas and are hungry enough to create change, we can solve all of our greatest problems within decades. And, as Obama said we are the first generation to feel the effects of climate change and the last who can do anything about it, so why wouldn't you want to spend all of your mental time and energy making sure that there is a future for the human race, and the rest of the inhabitants of the planet. But it's not just a festival about climate change, it's everything change.

How do you hope audiences respond to this years programme? Our festival logline is inspiration, empowerment, impact. So we hope that our audiences come away from the festival inspired, empowered and ready to create impact in the world. In our exit surveys we ask our audience what influence the festival had on their lives. The best answers are always from those who respond that, as a result of the festival, they decided to change their course of study or their career. Its not about people watching a 90-minute movie and starting to use a KeepCup, it's about people changing who they are and dedicating their entire lives to what is most important. We dont just want people to be entertained, we want them to connect to the changemaker communities of the world and help rewrite the future, while we still have time.

Transitions Film Festival takes place online (with some in-person Melbourne events) from 18 February-13 March.
