As Arkansas filing period nears, legislative candidates across the state air intentions to run – Arkansas Online

Posted: February 7, 2022 at 7:06 am

The latest wave of campaign announcements for the Arkansas Legislature sets up Republican primaries across the state and includes a GOP challenge to a Little Rock incumbent.

All 100 House districts and 35 Senate districts were redrawn during the state's redistricting process last year, and all seats are up for reelection in November.

The filing period begins Feb. 22 and ends March 1. The primary election is May 24, and the general election is set for Nov. 8.

LITTLE ROCK

In Little Rock, Republican Jon Wickliffe on Jan. 31 announced a challenge to Democratic Rep. Andrew Collins.

The seat, House District 73, stretches from the Riverdale neighborhood to west Little Rock.

Wickliffe, who is responsible for business development in Arkansas for a health plan company, said in his announcement that his bid for the seat isn't about partisan politics, but about effectively representing all residents of the district.

"We need an advocate for the entire district, someone who is willing to listen and put in the work to ensure that each and every voice is heard," he said.

Collins, who has served in the House since 2019, has announced that he will seek reelection.

"I want to continue to fight for Arkansas families and help build a Legislature worthy of our people," he said in a Facebook post in August.

Democrat Grant Smith has announced a bid for House District 77, which covers parts of west central and southwest Little Rock.

The incumbent, Rep. Fred Allen, D-Little Rock, has said he is considering a run for state Senate. Reached by phone Friday, Allen said he would announce what his plans are next week.

On his website, Smith said he is running "to amplify the voices of our beautifully diverse district."

Smith said he supports Medicare for all, improving educational opportunities, decriminalizing marijuana, raising the minimum wage, making it easier for people to vote and LGBTQ+ rights.

Another Democrat, Little Rock NAACP branch President Dianne Curry, said she is considering running in House District 77. Curry unsuccessfully challenged Republican U.S. Rep. French Hill for Arkansas' 2nd Congressional District seat in 2016.

NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

At least two Republicans are planning to run in the district covering the northeast corner of the state, a seat that will be vacated by Rep. Joe Jett, R-Success.

Jett, who has served in the House since 2013, announced last month that he would not seek reelection in House District 1 this year.

The district includes Clay County and parts of Randolph and Greene counties.

Jeremy Wooldridge, the CEO of Crowley's Ridge Development Council and a member of the Greene County Quorum Court, said in a Jan. 27 news release that he is running for the seat on a conservative platform that includes fiscal responsibility, opposing abortion, defending small businesses, protecting the Second Amendment and supporting workforce and economic development for northeast Arkansas.

"It is imperative that we continue to protect our constitutional rights, support our school systems, and make wise financial decisions for our state," Wooldridge said.

Steve Dixon, the mayor of Marmaduke in Greene County, said in a statement Wednesday that he intends to run for House District 1 because he has a desire to serve the citizens of the district in a larger capacity than just the city.

Dixon described himself as a moderate conservative and said he believes in local control for city governments. He said he wants to see jobs continue to come to Arkansas, continuous highway improvements in the area, improvements to the area's ability to hire and quality teachers in public schools. He added that he opposes abortion and supports the Second Amendment.

NORTHWEST ARKANSAS

In Northwest Arkansas, Bentonville City Council Member Aubrey Patterson has announced that she will seek the Republican nomination in the newly created District 13.

The district includes neighborhoods in south Bentonville and west Rogers.

Patterson said she wants to be a "voice for the people of Northwest Arkansas to help ensure the family values and conservative principles of our community are represented in Little Rock."

Two other Bentonville Republicans have also declared their candidacy for the seat: attorney Greg Payne and Scott Richardson, director of technology for CEI Engineering Associates.

A second Republican has announced a bid for House District 25, which runs through rural areas of eastern Washington and Crawford counties and a portion of Franklin County, where the incumbent is not seeking reelection.

Rep. Bruce Coleman, R-Mountainburg, confirmed to the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette on Jan. 24 that he would not seek reelection in the district.

Special-education teacher Chad Puryear announced Wednesday that he would run for the open seat. In a news release, he said he is a sixth-generation Arkansas farmer with conservative values and a desire to be a voice for the district.

"My life has deep roots in rural Arkansas, and I am passionate about the way of life our small communities offer. I believe that we can support rural development in Arkansas while preserving the quality of life these communities provide," Puryear said.

Businesswoman Jody Harris is also seeking the GOP's nomination for the seat.

In Fort Smith, attorney Kelly Procter Pierce announced Wednesday that she would run as a Republican in Senate District 27.

Rep. Justin Boyd, R-Fort Smith, is also running for the seat. The incumbent, Sen. Mat Pitsch, R-Fort Smith, is running for state treasurer.

In her announcement, Pierce said she wants to be "a voice for parents against out-of-control school boards, stand up against government overreach whether it's mask or vaccine mandates and protect our traditional values of life and liberty."

Pierce narrowly lost the Republican primary for a state House seat in Fort Smith in 2018.

Bible importance just can’t be measured by surveys or box office – Tennessean

Posted: at 7:06 am

Ray Waddle| Special to Nashville Tennessean, USA TODAY NETWORK newsrooms in Tennessee

The closest Ive come to hearing a booming celebrity voice from the Bible was on the phone with Charlton Heston. He famously played Moses in the 1956 Ten Commandments movie. Some years before he died in 2008, he was in Nashville, and I interviewed him. We started with Second Amendment politics but ended on faith and films. As a bonus to me he recited some dialogue from Planet of the Apes (1969). He signed off that day with a nice bit of non-denominational wisdom: Do your best, and keep your promises.

Its a strange marvel how the Bible plays out in the imagination of modern entertainment media and how public tastes and technologies change. Ten Commandments was a 1950s blockbuster (using 14,000 extras and 15,000 animals). Then big-screen biblical epics fell flat in the 1960s. American spirituality was fragmenting. Religious attendance entered a decline. The cinematic sweep of the Exodus story gave way to narrower themes, notably apocalyptic speculations better suited to books like The Late Great Planet Earth. The last big Bible movie was Mel Gibsons The Passion of the Christ nearly 20 years ago.

Its tempting to regard a box office smash, or the absence of one, as an ethical index of biblical influence, or its eclipse. But this is elusive stuff. Bible interest today is dispersed, entrepreneurial, harder to gauge than ever, especially amid the traumatic disruptions of a pandemic.

Polls and surveys keep trying. Last year the American Bible Society reported increases in Bible reading during the COVIDcrisis. Fifty percent of Americans were Bible users meaningthey read it at least three or four times a year outside of congregational settings, according to the State of the Bible: USA 2021 study. That percentage has been steady for a decade. Last year, though, one in six adults reads scripture most days during the week, a 12% increase over 2020.

The survey identified sources of comfort during COVID. Family members topped the list, followed by prayer/meditation, food and exercise. Bible reading was ranked seventh, ahead of alcohol. Among Black Americans, Bible reading was in the top three.

The study warned that Gen Z youngsters inhabit a very different informational world from their elders, and new models of discipleship are needed to engage teens questions about the sacred. Surely this is always the case. Adults have worried about the Bibles cultural decline ever since the first generation of Mayflower Puritans, who fretted about their children going morally slack.

Unpredictable times dont change a daily truth: Even in group study or congregations, the Bible is pondered one reader at a time, usually under the radar, undetected. Scriptures social mandates and political consequences are real, but the words are first encountered by the individual open to its meanings, whether through crisis, gratitude, or a vision of public reform.

The Bible carries a secret, poet Richard Howard once said: It is addressed not to everyone but to each one. In every line, the Bible hints at something that it does not reveal but that tempts us, arrests us, fascinates us all the more, he said in a 1996 lecture.

When I read from Ecclesiastes or Jeremiah or the Gospels late at night, while the pandemic burns I think I see what he means. For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. (First Corinthians 13:12)

Encore Boston Harbor Poker Reopens with Massive Rake on Low-Stakes Games – PokerNews.com

Posted: at 7:04 am

Encore Boston Harbor has finally reopened its poker room for the first time since the pandemic, which you'd expect would bring about tears of joy from poker players in the area. However, limited hours and seating, along with rake that's going to be tough to beat, has put a damper on the reopening.

As we reported in December, the previously popular card room was slated to reopen on January 31, 2022. Players arrived at the casino to play poker on Monday for the first time since March 2020.

Right off the bat, the games filled up with lengthy waitlists. That was due to a couple of reasons, one of which being that players had been eagerly awaiting the poker room to reopen for nearly two years. The other reason is the result of the room reopening with just 12 tables, 60 fewer than pre-pandemic.

On Tuesday afternoon, eight $1/$3 no-limit hold'em games were running, plus two $2/$5 NLH games, a $5/$10 NLH, and a $2/$2 pot-limit Omaha table. Those games all had sizable wait lists and some of those players won't get in a game because the room closes at 8 p.m.

Don't expect the casino to add more poker tables in the near future. PokerNews reached out to the Encore in December and were told by a PR staff member: "Due to the current state of our operations, we do not have the real estate on our gaming floor to bring back poker at its pre-COVID capacity."

The limited hours and seating are disappointing to a number of area poker players who voiced their displeasure on social media, but the biggest concern appears to be the reopened room's unconventionally high cash game rake. Chase Bianchi, who reached the 2021 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event final table (ninth place for $1 million), made it clear his opinion on this issue.

Apparently, Encore Boston Harbor's poker room is charging 10% rake up to $10 per hand. That includes low-limit games, which will certainly make it difficult even for a skilled player to beat the rake consistently. The card room doesn't have any tournaments scheduled for the time being and it's unclear when they'll bring back tournaments.

So, why are players willing to pay the rake to play at Encore? Lack of nearby competition, mostly, it appears. Casinos such as Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun, two legendary card rooms in the area, are a two-hour drive away from Everett, MA, a suburb north of Boston where Encore is located.

Players in the Boston area have to decide if it's worth it to make the drive or to stay closer to home and pay higher rake. At Foxwoods, for example, rake is up to $5 in a $1/$2 or $2/$5 game, half the rake at Encore Boston Harbor. That's a significant difference that will eat into profits. Well, profits for the players, but certainly not the casino, unless the players stop showing up.

Why buying NFTs is the +EV play for poker pros – Coin Rivet

Posted: at 7:04 am

Poker players fascination for NFTs has hit record highs over the past few months, with several leading pro players like Bill Perkins, Jeff Gross and Mike McDonald all using NFTs as their profile pictures on social media.

The phenomenon coincides with a stage in online poker where the skill gap is tightening between professionals and amateurs.

An excess of online training and professional streamers means that casual players now have a level of poker knowledge that exceeds that of five or 10 years ago.

As a result, professional poker players are grinding harder than ever to extract a higher percentage of yearly ROI and expected value.

One way professionals have extended yearly profits is by purchasing NFTs like CryptoPunks and Bored Apes.

These two projects in particular are viewed as status symbols, with one Bored Ape being valued at well above $200,000 in Ethereum.

Digital collectibles are rapidly becoming the new Audemars Piguet or Rolex watches. They are known to increase in value due to limited supply while also showing others that the owner possesses a certain level of wealth.

Now, instead of multi-tabling 12 or 24 tournaments, professional poker players can reduce their game time and allocate more effort to finding the next Bored Ape or CryptoPunk.

A mere $5,000 investment in Bored Apes less than one year ago is now worth almost $500,000 as the gains reach astonishing heights. In poker, meanwhile, turning $5,000 into $500,000 is something that very few players could achieve let alone in less than 12 months.

The Caribbean: The Haven for The Wealthiest People In The World – PRNewswire

Posted: at 7:04 am

"Alternative citizenship gives you all the freedom of traveling visa-free to a lot more places. Apart from this, investing in real estate and setting up a business without much hassle acts as the extra icing, if Caribbeancitizenship by investment is their choice," says CEO CTrustGlobal.

"If you are someone who is not dependent on a Job and is Independently Wealthy with an interest in Travel and Business investments, "Investment migration" is Your best way out," says CTrustGlobal CEO.

Most countries have citizenship by investment Program - all that differs is the time and price to secure it. One must go through all the research and base their decision according to the requirements and budget.

Where are the wealthy moving these days?

"Without a doubt, it's the Caribbean islands -Caribbean passports that offer visa-free travel to nearly 140 to 160 countries," says the CEO, CTrustGlobal.

Let's look at the secrets that make this region so attractive.

A Strong Economic Bounce-Back

The Caribbean is a tourist-dependent region. It remains one of the most prominent destinations in the world. And yet, it's situated in the eye of the storm.

Hurricanes have passed through with high frequency and intensity. Some of them are utterly destructive for tourist operators. But many have adapted to the bitterness of rising again from the ashes.

COVID-19 impact may have been even greater to these regions. It struggled with border closures, flight cancellations, and a near-fall of the cruise-ship market. The human impact of the virus affected tens of thousands.

A report by the Caribbean Tourism Organization showsa drop in tourism arrivals in 2020 in comparison to 2019. The decline was estimated to be at 65%, the biggest in the region.

Despite these challenges, more and more HNWIs are eyeing the region. It makes one wonder what secret lies here. One of the reasons is the region's quick adjustment to situations.

Experts indicate that Caribbean countries were quicker to implement measures for the pandemic. Tourists returned faster compared to other destinations. It outperformed many other parts of the world, which experienced even steeper drops.

Such a strong economy would attract different investors. It's one of the reasons why HNWIs come here.

The Caribbean enjoys some of the highest levels of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) globally. Many of its economies have FDI to GDP ratios above 10%.

Although the 2008 financial crisis greatly reduced its FDI flow, the region has witnessed a considerable recovery recently. It's still one of the significant economic destinations around.

The Best CBI Programs

Citizen-by-Investment is the process of obtaining a second citizenship and passport through investment. One can buy a property in a host country to acquire citizenship. It's a much faster way of becoming a citizen than the traditional immigration method.

The investor does not need to visit or reside in the host country. CBI is the best way for HNWIs to invest in other opportunities globally.

An applicant can have approval roughly within three months. They will receive permanent citizenship, a valid passport, and visa-free travel, among other benefits.

This is what investors from third-world and developing countries look for. It's no longer just a luxury, but rather a necessity.

Let's look at the two countries that have the highest number of investments in the Caribbean:

India

A press release the Business Standard mentions a rise in the number of Indian HNWIs investing in the Caribbean. They are looking for a better way of diversifying their wealth.

This country faces uncertainties around the healthcare industry, primarily influenced by the pandemic. Also, essential tax rules are affecting their investments. Affluent Indians are therefore looking for a better life for their families and more stable financial assets.

CTrustGlobal reports a sharp increase in the Indian upper class investing in other countries. India has close to 7,000 ultra-high-net-worth individuals and over 100 billionaires.

The Global Wealth Migration Review report indicates that close to 5000 millionaires migrated abroad in 2020 alone. A larger percentage of them ended up in the Caribbean.

The Indian government has created flexible policies that allow HNWIs to invest abroad in the past few years. This has allowed them to get citizenship in these countries.

Caribbean countries offer the best CBI programs for Indians. It's no wonder the Indian community is growing steadily. More and more affluent Indians are coming here for business and wealth diversification and a better life for their families.

Nigeria

Despite having vast resources, the Nigerian HNWIs community faces too many global travel restrictions by the Nigerian passport. It grants visa-free access to only 54 destinations, which already includes other African nations.

This is a very small number compared to her neighbors like Ghana, Cameroon, and Cote d'Ivoire. Passports from these countries grant access to other high-end destinations like Europe and the USA.

Investing in Dominica citizenship is the best move. Pairing the Nigerian passport with a Caribbean passport opens doors to more than 150 more destinations globally. This includes the UK, the USA, Russia, and China, which are considered to be economic superpowers.

The CBI process is quick and straightforward. The process will take about three months to complete. Once done, the individual enjoys a wide range of benefits, including expanded visa-free travel to over 200 countries.

Also, investing in the Caribbean passport opens access to tax exemptions from different incomes, gifts, inheritance and wealth, and the best educational institutions. It's a great opportunity for any African investor looking for easy access to the global economy.

Other Reasons

There are several other reasons why the Caribbean has become a favorite destination for HNWIs. Consider the following:

A safe environment

The stable economic development of this region makes it an excellent place for investment. The entire region has been enjoying steady economic growth of about 5% per year, majorly from tourism.

Flexible tax policy

Caribbean countries like Grenada don't impose a foreign income tax, property tax, gift tax, wealth, or inheritance tax on investors. They offer corporate tax incentives to attract more investors, exempting all import taxes too. Also, there is no limit to the flow of capital and profits back home. These are attractive offers for HNWIs investors.

Excellent quality of life

The Caribbean CBI program allows investors to own dual nationality. With this comes the lowest-paid family costs in places like Grenada and Dominica. One can also migrate to the USA using the E2 visa, which allows them to establish, advance, and operate businesses. Besides, their spouse will have the rights to work, and the children can attend the school of their choice.

Final Thought

Investing in the Caribbean CBI is an excellent move for HNWIs who needs access to better business opportunities. The use of FDI promotion policies is more extensive and prevalent here than any other place. It's evidence of stable economic growth. With such a welcoming environment, there is no questions why it is so attractive to investors.

WATCH: Dominicans on what constitutes the ideal date | Loop Caribbean News – Loop Caribbean News

Posted: at 7:04 am

The dating stage in any relationship is critical as the experience usually determines the viability of the initial attraction between two people. Dating is a chance to engage each other in a social setting with the goal of learning as much as possible to decide whether you want to continue socializing and eventually possibly decide to start an exclusive relationship.

During that time mannerisms, behaviors, attitudes, likes, dislikes, standards, dreams and aspirations, to name a few, are all assessed. The dating period is ideally open to allow both parties the freedom to engage as many persons as they would like until a perfect match is found to move on to the next stage in the relationship.

But is this what dating means in Dominica or in the Caribbean for that matter? We took the streets of Dominica to ask persons about the dating experiences of both young and old and from the looks of things dating, quite often referred to as going out really means going steady. It seems to be what persons in an exclusive relationship do for fun. Fair enough!

Loop Caribbean reached out to a few people in the Nature Isle, to find out what to them, constitutes an ideal date.

Nothing Fancy

Responder 1: Something simple, you appreciate me, happy birthday KG; present a gift, make me feel special, something I like, something I want, nothing out of the ordinary very simple.

Sweet treats: Give the crowd-pleasing crumble a Caribbean twist – Press and Journal

Posted: at 7:04 am

The Food and Drink team just cant get enough of this mouth-watering crumble, and nor will you after whipping up the recipe for yourself.

Shaun and Craig McAnuff, the brothers behind Original Flava, have taken the humble crumble and given it a Caribbean twist and oh boy, does it taste good.

Crumble has to be one of our favourite desserts, so weve added in one of our favourite plant-based ingredients: plantain, said the siblings.

Plantain honestly makes everything a hundred times better, and its no different in this heavenly crumble. Chunks of it with apples, caramelised in a buttery spiced mixture

The riper the plantain, the sweeter the crumble will taste.

To make your plantains overripe, just pop them in the oven at 180C Fan/200C/400F/Gas 6 for about 15 minutes.

Natural Flava: Quick And Easy Plant-Based Caribbean Recipes by Craig and Shaun McAnuff is published by Bloomsbury, priced 22. Photography by Matt Russell. Available now.

Three weeks after Royal Caribbean was forced to cancel three sailings on Symphony of the Seas, the ship is back in service.

In early January, Royal Caribbean announced four of its cruise ships would either cancel cruises or remain out of service for a while longer due to a rise in Covid-19 cases, largely due to the Omicron variant.

On Saturday, the first of these ships returned to service without any further delays.

Symphony of the Seas departed PortMiami on a 7-night Western Caribbean itinerary that includes a stop at Perfect Day at CocoCay.

According to reports from onboard Symphony, there are2,937 passengers on this sailing.

The four ships included:

With Symphony back in service, the other three ships will also return to service in the next month or so.

Serenade of the Seas was already scheduled to go in for a short dry dock, so Royal Caribbean combined her cancelled cruises with the upcoming refurbishment.

Vision of the Seas had not yet returned to service when her debut was pushed back.
