Groundhog Day and Embracing the Absurd – Paste – Paste Magazine

Posted: February 5, 2022 at 5:37 am

Often when we talk about stories, we question whether the stakes are high enough, or too high, or whether theyre even extant. In Groundhog Day, the classic 1993 comedy about a self-centered weatherman (Bill Murray) stuck in a time loop, tangible stakes quickly fly out of the window, with emotional and, more importantly, philosophical consequences being the only real stakes at play.

Pretty early on in the film, Murrays character, the obnoxiously narcissistic Phil, realizes that there are no consequences for his actions. He can steal, seduce, wreak havoc and even kill himself, and nothing about his circumstances will change. No matter what, he will still wake up with Sonny and Cher on the radio in the small Pennsylvania town of Punxsutawney.

His situation feels like the perfect recipe for nihilism, the philosophical idea promoted by Friedrich Nietzsche and others that life is pointless and the values that we hold dear have no root in actual fact. And who could blame him for being a nihilist when hes faced with a blank slate every day? Phil follows this philosophy to its logical conclusionshedonism and suicidemultiple times. No matter what, hes still under that homey quilt in the morning. Nihilism is not the answer.

From there, Phil works on his own personal growth and starts to help the townspeople he once rebuffed, partly because hes grown, but also because his development as a person endears him to his producer/love interest Rita (Andie McDowell, with glorious hair). At this stage, he seems to be subscribing to enlightened self-interest, the idea that in helping others, you in turn help yourself (basically the golden rule revisited).

It works for him most of the time, but he still has to start from scratch every day in terms of winning over Rita. Phil is painfully aware of how far hes come as a person towards the end of the movie, confessing to Rita that the worst part of his predicament is waking up every morning with her still thinking hes a jerk. So even though Phils change of heart serves him to some extent, hes hardly a man of enlightened self-interest, considering the effort he has to go through to prove himself to Rita day in and day out.

Phils actions do follow a philosophy, though: absurdism, particularly that championed by the French philosopher Albert Camus. Absurdism doesnt fall that far from nihilism, preoccupying itself with the inherent dissonance between our desire for meaning and the senselessness of the universe. Camus seminal work The Myth of Sisyphus invokes the Greek myth which isnt all that different from Phils circumstances: Sisyphus is tasked for eternity with pushing a boulder up a hill, only for it to roll back down to the bottom again, then he pushes it back up, and on and on.

Ultimately, though, Camus says that we can find happiness in the face of the absurd, as long as we both accept the absurdity of life and keep trying to create our own meaning. As he wrote in The Myth of Sisyphus, Happiness and the absurd are two sons of the same earth. They are inseparable.

Phil follows this doctrine by embracing the cycle in which hes trapped. He learns new skills like ice sculpting, saves a kid falling out of a tree, and preoccupies himself with general do-goodery. Phil also creates meaning by finding solace in his connection with Rita, despite him having to rekindle it every day. Only in embracing the absurd is Phil set free.

Our circumstances can feel so dire sometimes, between the greed of the upper classes, ignorance on climate change and any other number of issues that feel obvious in their solution, save for the inertia of world leaders. However, maybe by accepting the absurd we can find some of the peace that Phil has as he walks through the snow hand in hand with Rita.

Visions of Peace Initiative is Nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by the Indonesian Senate House – Digital Journal

Posted: at 5:37 am

AA LaNyalla Mattalitti, Chairman of the House of Regional Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia, also known as the Senate House, officially nominated the Visions of Peace Initiative for the Nobel Peace Prize.

I fully support the Visions of Peace Initiative (VOPI) to win the Nobel Peace Prize. To date, VOP has held more than 50 events throughout Indonesia and has inspired hundreds of thousands of young people.

VOPI events have been held throughout the Republic including areas that have experienced conflicts and natural disasters. Hopefully through the engagement of youth using art and other creative forms of expression the VOPI can continue to inspire the younger generations. With the positive results that the VOPI has achieved to date, I believe the VOPI is very deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize.

In addition, the leader of the Peoples Consultative Assembly of the Republic of Indonesia and H. Muhammad Farhan, SE, member of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia have also nominated the VOPI to the Nobel Peace Prize Committee.

According to the founders of the Visions of Peace Initiative, Prince KPH Dr. Damien Dematra and Princess Cheryl Halpern, the recognition and nomination of the Visions of Peace Initiative from the Indonesian Senate House is unprecedented and incomparable honor. This extraordinary acknowledgment of a non-governmental organization has never happened before in the history of the Republic of Indonesia. This most meaningful tribute will inspire everyone who has already participated in the VOPI and those who are yet to participate, to continue to promote peace and tolerance.

Princess Halpern explained the perspective upon which she and Prince KPH Dr. Dematra founded the VOPI saying, The Visions of Peace Initiative embraces the Ethic of Reciprocity, also known as the Golden Rule, a universal value that is included within all faiths and traditions. This Ethic of Reciprocity teaches us to, Do Unto Others As You Would Want Done For Yourself and Do Not Do Unto Others As You Would Not Want Done To Yourself. It is a message that finds expression through the millennia in the teachings of all faiths. It is also a concept that is central to Indonesias motto, Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, Unity With Respect For Diversity since without respect for diversity within a family or community there can be no unity. However, this essential pillar of civil behavior is not effectively taught to the youth of today.

The Visions of Peace Initiative is committed to imparting a meaningful understanding of ethical behavior that can be achieved through an appreciation for the value of reciprocity. Every participant in the Visions of Peace Initiative becomes an advocate for tolerance as they bring their vision and understanding of the Golden Rule to their homes and community. They have learned that there is a nobler and more fulfilling alternative to intolerance and violence. By embracing the Golden Rule they are displaying behavior that promotes civility, dignity and respect.

Prince KPH Dr. Dematra expanded on his co-founders comments saying that, the mission of the VOPI is to inspire young Indonesians under the age of 18 to express their views about tolerance and peaceful coexistence through the broad spectrum of the arts: including drawing, poetry, song, dance and film. These arts modalities provide multifaceted platforms through which to bridge socio-economic, ethnic and religious divides. By using their artistic talents the participants channel their ideas and share their perspectives on tolerance, peace and respect for each other. The VOPI provides an important opportunity towards nurturing attitudes of respectful communication and acceptance.

Since its inception in 2017, the VOPI has been working together with schools, orphanages and religious organizations throughout Indonesia.

As of the start of 2022 the VOPI has already held 52 events in different Indonesian cities. In response to the Covid-19 pandemic the Visions of Peace Initiative went viral in order to continue to engage with young people throughout the Republic. To date, I am proud that the VOPI has touched and inspired hundreds of thousands of young Indonesians.

Youth today live in a time when much of the world is suffering from violence, hatred, intolerance, bigotry and abuse. These themes are present in most of the stories that are broadcast and shared on the global multi-media and social networking platforms that they access. As a result, all youth need to be taught, with and by example, that when individuals are persecuted because of their gender, race, religion or physical limitations, that they have a duty to protest and fight injustice before they too lose their human dignity.

With this is mind the Visions of Peace Initiative is honored to have also been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by Prof. Dr. Ir. Oktovian Berty Alexander Sompie, Rector of the Universitas Kristen Indonesia Tomohon and by Dr. Ephraim Isaac, Director of the Institute of Semitic Studies at Princeton University. Both of these respected academicians have prioritized the importance of the VOPIs teaching the young about civility.

Princess Cheryl Halpern and Prince KPH Dr. Dematra urge us all to appreciate Alfred Nobels comment that, Good wishes will not ensure peace. We must remember that civility and peace require a steadfast commitment to instill in every generation an understanding of the Ethic of Reciprocity.

Building Bridges of Inclusion in Metastatic Breast Cancer Care – Curetoday.com

Posted: at 5:37 am

Things change because people become tired of the same old, same old.

Stephanie L. Walker, B.S.N., spent her working career helping people as a nurse in the pediatric intensive care unit, emergency department and intensive care unit, as an instructor and as a hospice nurse. At every step of the way, she charged herself with ensuring the patients under her care were treated with care and compassion and in line with the Golden Rule. She worked to ensure that the students in her nursing classes understood the importance of following those tenets. When her health forced an early retirement, she struggled to find purpose in her life, for she had always been a giver.

A few years ago, the late Katherine OBrien reached out to her about advocacy and told Stephanie that she was going to put her out there. As Stephanies involvement as a metastatic breast cancer advocate continued to grow, it became obvious to her that there was an absence of color in a number of areas. She began to ask questions of organizations: How can you advocate for a person of color when you have no one in your leadership who reflects people of color? She pushed for inclusion on committees and boards and volunteered to participate in programs presented by organizations such as Susan G. Komen.

In medically underserved eastern North Carolina, Stephanie became the face and voice of the metastatic breast cancer community and she worked with civic groups, church groups and businesses to ensure that everyone understood that inclusion helps everyone when the battle with metastatic breast cancer is underway.

To that end, she chaired the MBC Alliances BECOME project in 2021 to ensure Black people are better represented in cancer research. Building on a 2019 project conducted by Marina Kaplan, an epidemiologist who lived with metastatic breast cancer, BECOME was a research initiative designed to find solutions within the Black community.

The data collected tells a disturbing story. In the United States, the mortality rate for non- Hispanic Black women with breast cancer is 40% higher than for non-Hispanic White women. And while clinical trials help improve outcomes and survival, Black people represent only 3% to 6% of patients in all cancer clinical trials.

The survey responses will help patients make more knowledgeable decisions, educate doctors on how to support patients in joining trials and help researchers understand and design clinical trials in a way that encourages Black participation.

Stephanie works every day to ensure that the voice of every person with metastatic breast cancer is heard equally. As a person of color, she understands the disparities faced by many in the waiting room, the doctors office, the board room of the pharma conducting the trial and, sadly enough, in the organizations that say they advocate equally for all. And just as she battles her cancer daily, she also fights daily to ensure that everyone with metastatic breast cancer has an equal opportunity.

Stephanie Walker never set out to become an advocate, but it is a role she has embraced and one in which she has grown as she works to ensure an inclusive and diverse treatment arena.

Joey Logano Reveals His Racing Moral Code and Just How Far He Is Willing to Go On Track to Achieve Victory – Sportscasting

Posted: at 5:37 am

Joey Logano has been extremely successful in the NASCAR Cup Series since his first full-time season back in 2009. And hes done it his way. Thats meant ruffling a few feathers along the way.

This week, just days before the Clash at the Coliseum, where many expect aggressive beating and banging action on the quarter-mile track, the 2018 champ talked about his plan of attack inside the iconic venue. And he interestingly discussed his moral racing code and just how far hes willing to go in order to achieve victory.

Last year, NASCAR President Steve Phelps, who worked 14 years with the NFL in its marketing department, appeared on theI Am Athlete-NASCARpodcast and discussed, among other topics, his time in the NFL and his experiences in NASCAR.

During the conversation, he named his top five NFL players he worked with based on marketing-athletic ability and then named a NASCAR driver equivalent. Emmitt Smith made his top five. Joey Logano was his match.

Im going to go Joey Logano, Phelps said. Ill give you just a quick why. Because I dont know Emmitt Smith well, but Ive met him a couple of times. Hes sharp. Hes obviously an incredible talent, Hall of Famer and all that. Think he does a really good with his own brand and I think he cares about that sport.

Joey Logano cares about this sport. Id say Joeys a little more when hes out of the car, phenomenal guy. Smart. Cares about the sport. When hes in the car, he doesnt give a s***, Phelps admitted. Couldnt be nicer. When you get in the arena, hes going to, I dont care who you are. Ill take you out.

With the start of the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series season beginning with an exhibition on a custom-built quarter-mile track inside the LA Coliseum, Joey Logano and all the drivers will be tested on multiple levels.

For starters, no drivers have ever raced a lap on this new bullring, which took just over a month to construct. In addition, its the first time any of them will be driving the Next Gen car in actual racing conditions.

With so many unknowns, some drivers might hang back and play it safe, trying to avoid an accident and the ensuing damage. Logano is not one of those drivers. This week in a call with reporters, the 31-year-old said in the type of aggressive racing everyone expects in the Coliseum, his mindset remains the same as it does in any race, and he tries to follow the Golden Rule.

You have to be consistent. Whats consistent? Im going to win. Im going out there to win the race, Logano said. Thats the goal. And we do what it takes to do that.

But you have to have your moral code and what is considered OK. Is straight-up dumping somebody OK to go win the race? I dont think so. Thats not really in my cards. Now, a bump-and-run, Ive proven thats OK. And the facts are you have to be OK with it happening to you. Am I OK with getting wrecked? No. Am I OK with getting moved out of the way? Yeah, Im not going to be happy about it, but Im going to have to be OK with it if Im going to do it. I feel like that should be the code. Whatever youre OK with happening to you, you should be alright with doing to somebody else. Thats only fair.

Joey Logano vocalizing what he deems as acceptable on-track behavior makes logical sense, but in the heat of the moment, emotions can get the best of the drivers. All of them remember how someone raced them.

For a number of drivers, theyre not fond of Loganos tactics. That became apparent in last yearsUSA Todayannual survey that features answers from NASCAR Cup Series drivers to unique questions about their fellow drivers.

Logano received votes for the most frustrating driver to race against, with one vote from his arch-rival Kyle Busch and an eyebrow-raising tally from his longtime Penske teammate Brad Keselowski.

However, that wasnt the only negative category Logano won. On the question of driver most likely to bump you out of the way to win a race, the Team Penske driver received votes from Keselowski, Matt DiBenedetto, and Christopher Bell.

Logano has earned a reputation as the guy that Steve Phelps correctly pointed out doesnt give a s*** on the race track. And hes OK with it.

Hey Pandas, What Are Some Rules You Follow In Your Life? – Bored Panda

Posted: at 5:37 am

Here's mine from my English class:

The 5 Rules In My Life:

1. Always Assume Disappointment. If you are always assuming that someone will let you down, youll never be disappointed. And if they dont you will be pleasantly surprised.

2.Always Respect Someone Until They Give You A Reason Not To.

When you meet someone new, you respect them. Until, they say/do something that makes it so you dont anymore.

3.Dont Assume Something Is True.

If you hear something about somebody that didnt come from the person themselves, always ask them if it is true.

4.Do What Makes You Comfortable.

Who cares what John in the deli thinks? If you like that shirt, f*****g rock it! Do whatever makes you happy, not what you think other people would like.

5.Put Yourself First.

If someone, (i.e, a friend, an S.O, a coworker) wants to do something you dont want to do, makes you uncomfortable, is pressuring you into something, dont listen. Listen to what you want first. You are the most important person in your life. You will always come first.

Follow these and live the best life!

Report

"You can't change the past. Haw Haw!" (Nelson from the Simpsons)What you do today will change your future. The now you live in is a product of your actions in the past.

Summary: You can act now to change your future. Don't regret the past.Try to live in the moment while making the best decisions you can for tomorrow.

Report

The Golden Rule. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. The older I get the more I see in that seemingly simple cluster of words. I should admit that I stray at times, because I am human. But when we raised our children, that was our guide. It gave us patience, and guidelines when we needed them, and made us better listeners. it also enabled us to comfortably admit when we had no idea what to do as parents. Instead of pretending (lying) we talked with them, listened, and ended up with a solution we could all accept.

Report

If youre going to complain to someone, complain to someone who can fix it. Otherwise, dont just complain to anyone. Everyone has there own problems, dont add to theirs.

Always put your keys back in the exact same place! On a hook, in your front left pocket, in your purse. Otherwise, they could end up in the fridge or inside the couch!

Always be polite to strangers especially where people serve or help you.

Report

Never get into car without using restroom first. Never leave the house without 'seeing' the cat. Don't want to leave her in a closed room without access to her litter box.

Report

When I have to make a decision or a choice, I think about which action I might regret the most if it doesn't work out. I play all the alternatives to the end, and focus on which one feels the most bearable if it wasn't the best one. Which one can I back out of, or most easily undo, if necessary? Most advice I read is "go for what makes you happy", "maximize profits", positive stuff like that. Positive outcomes do not come often to me and cannot be counted on, so I stick with minimizing the emotional fallout from negative ones.A second rule I follow is to document everything and save as much as possible, and that often means on paper. You can't count on cloud storage to always be there. I am talking to you, Kodak EZ share, Verizon Pix Place, and Google Plus, where some of my photos vanished forever, and their warnings were either too late or the method they gave you to save them did not work. My most recent "thank you for saving all those boxes of crap, Mom" incident was the College Board trying to tell my 35 year old she had to take the SAT again, because they lost the record that she took it. Well I didn't lose it, they dug a bit harder and she did NOT have to relearn all that useless algebra and geometry to try and achieve her 1400 score again!

Everything I learnt about morality:

1. Morality is subjective and relative.2. There exist commonly held values.3. Morality requires authority.4. A rule is more enforceable if it has greater support and strength.5. Religion is mankinds first attempt at finding factual and moral truth.6. Humans generally value their own lives.7. More can be achieved through cooperation.8. War is the ultimate form of conflict resolution.9. Karma does not enforce itself, but rather your actions affect how others react towards you.10. One has to balance self interest with the interests of others.

72 hour rule. I tend to be very reactionary which has caused A LOT of trouble for me in the past. At one point I realized that when I calmed down and thought things thru I generally considered things from multiple perspectives and regretted my initial reaction. So I initiated the 72 hour rule. When something makes me VERY angry or upset I inform the person involved that I will not discuss it again for the next 3 days. In that time I consider the problem and follow up accordingly. Obviously there are times that 72 hours arent reasonable but by using this technique most of the time Ive become much better at responding more reasonably and less defensively. Its now to the point that the major players in my life know when I need my 3 days and several folks (including my mother.. oh the irony!!) have adopted this rule!

Don't ever think you're unique because you end up sometimes getting depressed or worried about not fitting in. Whatever you're worried about, most people are worried about, too.

4. If you really want to be differnt then be smart, push past the excuses people will allow you to give into to justify not pushing yourself and not succeeding. And don't give into mediocrity because it's easier.

1. We never harm women, whether that be physically or verbally.2. We never lie to our wives.3. We do what ever we can to protect our loved ones.4. We try to think of a plan for every situation that could endanger us or the ones we love (home invasion, natural disaster, etc.)5. If somebody insults you turn the other cheek. Learn how to say No to the people that only around when they need help and never reach your desperate call. It's easier and healthier to pursue a future dream than to change the past. It's ok to be different if you're comfortable with a small circle of friends and distance yourself from the potential trouble, that's your choice, and you're free to choose. Never engage with office drama, stay away from people who bad-mouthing colleagues. If you are traveling to a new place always learn the local wisdom and try your best to follow the guideline. Believe your guts. Try to stay within budget, never get a loan for unnecessary things. Sometimes in life being helpful to others keeps us alive, just remember not to burn ourselves out. Even if it's hard, live a healthy lifestyle, If exercise in the gym is too much hassle, static walking while watching TV is better than nothing. Do not litter. Stay away from drugs.

Report

1. Go with your gut.If something doesn't seem right it probably isn't.2. Better to be quiet and have a few good than loud and have many fake friends. 3. If someone can't accept you for you, they aren't worth your time. 4. NOBODY deserves to know anything about you.I used to come out to people because i thought they "deserved" to know instead of me wanting to tell them. This is how i was outted to my Catholic school.

Why everyone should be watching Mikaela Shiffrin this Olympics – Yahoo News

Posted: at 5:37 am

Mikaela Shiffrin, of the United States, races down the course during a training run for the World Cup downhill ski race, Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2021, in Lake Louise, Alberta. ((Frank Gunn/The Canadian Press via AP))

Mikaela Shiffrin, who at 26 is perhaps the best alpine skier in American history, already has a few lifetimes worth of memorable wins under her belt as she heads into the Winter Olympics. But it is a loss she witnessed when she was a child that still sticks with her.

When she was 6 years old, the US hosted the winter games in Salt Lake City, where all-time great mens skier Bode Miller already had two silver medals and was cruising towards a third in the slalom. All he needed was to complete a second attempt with a passable run to rack up a medal. Instead, the New Hampshire native went all guns blazing in an all-out play for gold, only to make an error on the course and lose his shot at a third podium. Miller hiked back up the mountain to finish out his run.

Even at a young age, Ms Shiffrin has said. I could relate to that.

Her career has shattered record after record, but she would need a whole lot of grit to keep going all the sameexperiences she will carry as she represents the US in Beijing.

The lightning fast alpine skier, who competes across all events rather than specialising like many of her competitors, made her debut on the World Cup stage at 15, and has been notching unprecedented feats ever since. In 2014, at 18, she became the youngest Olympic slalom champion in history. With three Olympic medals, six world championships, and 73 World Cup races, shes the most decorated American alpine skier in history, male or female. In 2015, she once won a World Cup race by more than 3 seconds, the largest margin of victory in nearly 50 years.

Mikaelas the best Ive ever seen, male or female, in a few different categories, Bode Miller himself told TIME. She can do whatever she wants.

Her success has been great, but it hasnt been without equally great challenges. Being a child prodigy on the world stage, and a natural introvert at that, came with alienation, with people viewing her as some sort of freak of nature, describing her skiing as cyborg-adjacent it was so precise and skilled.

Story continues

I feel like [they] look at me and are like, Do we speak to it? she told Sports Illustrated, who once dubbed her the worlds most dominant athlete.

Then there was the pressure that came from her outsized success. During the 2018 Olympics in South Korea, she won another two medals, including a gold in slalom, but still came in for criticism from some when she pulled out of the super-G and downhill categories, citing fatigue.

That alienation would only grow in 2020 when, her dominance atop the sport long since proven, her beloved father Jeff died in a freak accident at home in Edwards, Colorado. Mikaela wouldnt ski for nearly a year.

My family is heartbroken beyond comprehension about the unexpected passing of my kindhearted, loving, caring, patient, wonderful father, she said at the time. He taught us so many valuable lessons but above everything else, he taught us the golden rule: be nice, think firstThis is something I will carry with me forever. He was the firm foundation of our family and we miss him terribly.

Jeff Shiffrin, an anesthesiologist in Vail, Colorado, and former Dartmouth University skier himself, was a constant presence in the prodigys life in- and outside of skiing. He helped teach Shiffrin to ski in the driveway at age two, and was a constant presence at World Cup dates, known for trekking around the sidelines snapping photos of his wickedly talented daughter.

After spending weeks in mourning, she tried to return to competition in Sweden later that year, only to see the race canceled because of Covid. She was overtaken in the standings and lost the shortened 2019 - 2020 season.

She made her return to skiing that November, and embarked on a shaky comeback season, notching eight less World Cup podiums than the year before.

Still awash in grief, she pulled out of some events, citing the example of Olympic gymnast Simone Biles, who has withdrawn from some competitions to protect her mental health. That year, Shiffrin described feeling mentally vacant, blacking out while competing and forgetting what had just happened, wondering momentarily if she forgot how to ski. Perhaps most terrifying of all for a sport that involves whipping down a mountain at nearly 80 mph, she would get a sensation of darkness closing in around her field of view, obscuring the course before her.

Its not about settling scores, she told the Olympic channel at the time. I am angry that my dad died, I am angry how lonely I feel most days.

The 2021 season proved difficult as well, with a back injury stalling her training in October and a positive Covid test doing the same in December.

But the cyborg-adjacent skier is returning to form, and is now back to number one in the world alpine womens rankings.

She has credited embracing those complicated emotions that have accompanied her rise to the top of world sport. She has done everything from meditate, to read Sheryl Sandbergs book on grief Option B, to write music, to see a sports psychologist, to raise money for the Jeff Shiffrin Athlete Resiliency Fund, a programme to support athletes undergoing adversity.

She would return to mottos questions her dad used to her as she worked her way through ascending levels of competition as a kid: Are you happy? Is it fun? And shes making it a priority that the answer to those questions is yes.

I finally feel like myself again, she told The New York Times. When a devastating thing happens, its like coming back from a significant injury. I hadnt lost my ability or lost my fire, I was just healing, OK?

During the Beijing Games, shell be back to competing in all-five alpine ski races. If she continues on her current tear, she could easily surpass Julia Mancusos all-time, four-medal record for American womens skiers or even Swedish skier Ingemar Stenmarks record for 86 career victories. Another of her fathers mottos was process over results. Its about skiing your best in the moment, not chasing records or number-one finishes. When Mikaela Shiffrin hits the slopes in China, that process will now include a deep well of resilience.

Issued on: 04/02/2022 - 15:53

Is the United Kingdombetter off without Europe? Did the country make a risky choice by leaving the EU one year ago? Our reporters Jonathan Walsh and Clovis Casali crossed the Channel to understand the consequences of Brexit on the daily lives of citizens. From London to Belfast, via Boston the town with the highest pro-Brexit vote in 2016 they report on how the UK has changed.

On June 23, 2016, 51.89 percentof British voters chose to leave the European Union. The vote was followed byyears of tough negotiations to define the UK's future relationship with the bloc, while at home divisions ran deep over Brexit.

On January 31,2020, the UK officially left the EU and began an 11-monthtransition period to allow all parties to get accustomed to new rules. But today, talks are far from over.Brussels and London find themselves at loggerheads over severalissues, including fishing rights and the Northern Ireland protocol.

Our reporters Jonathan Walsh and Clovis Casali travelled aroundthe UKto understand the impact of Brexit on the lives of ordinary people. London, Belfast and Boston the townthat voted the most strongly in favour of leaving the EU are some of the places where they stopped. They met citizens hopeful that Brexit will stop immigration and others worried that their future outside of Europe will mean fewer opportunities.

Among those interviewed isNigel Farage, a former Member of the European Parliament who led the campaign to leave the EU. Heconfesses that "Brexit doesn't guarantee success"and says Prime MinisterBoris Johnson'sgovernment should doa lot better in dealing with the situation.

Brexit: 30% chance of new deal for Northern Ireland Johnson – The Guardian

Posted: at 5:36 am

Boris Johnson has privately conceded there is less than a 30% chance of negotiating a new Brexit deal for Northern Ireland this month, it has emerged.

Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, the leader of the Democratic Unionist party, said the prime minister made the admission during a private meeting last week.

Donaldson also said Johnson could not guarantee the UK would take unilateral action in the event the current Brexit negotiations with Brussels failed to result in a scrapping or radical reworking of the Northern Ireland protocol.

Donaldson told BBC Radio Ulsters Good Morning Ulster: I met with the prime minister last week, I asked the prime minister two straight questions. I asked him what he thought were the prospects of agreement being reached with the EU on the protocol within the next few weeks.

His answer was 20 to 30% chance of agreement.

I then asked the prime minister for a clear commitment that in the absence of an agreement with the EU, the UK government would do what they said in their command paper last July and take unilateral action the prime minister could not give me that commitment in those circumstances.

Donaldson also said on Friday he had warned the foreign secretary, Liz Truss, who took over negotiations from David Frost in December, that the clock was ticking. He said he needed to see progress in talks by 31 January, further extending deadlines he had set in September and October.

He also revealed Johnson had told him at the Tory party conference in October that there would be a new Brexit deal after a short sharp negotiation lasting just three weeks.

Donaldson was speaking after a day of political drama triggered by two DUP decisions. On Wednesday its agriculture minister, Edwin Poots, ordered a halt to Brexit checks on food and farm products at all Northern Ireland ports and airports setting it on a collision course with Westminster and Brussels.

And on Thursday the DUP carried out its threat to quit the executive in Stormont, announcing that the first minister, Paul Givan, was resigning.

Rival parties have rounded on the DUPs decision to quit Stormont in a row over the protocol, paralysing decision-making until after the local elections in May. One of the critical decisions now on hold is the approval of a three-year budget that would have enabled critical changes in the health service, which has one of the worst waiting lists in Europe.

Donaldson said he had no choice but to act as the current protocol presented an existential threat to the union of the UK. He said rivals had already goaded him as the boy who cried wolf but he had shown patience and given the government and the EU time to deliver a new Brexit deal.

He said it was premature to set a three-year budget before the May elections when a fresh mandate could be set.

The DUPs decision to instruct port officials to stop conducting Brexit checks on food and farm products arriving from Great Britain is already being challenged in the courts. Two unnamed individuals lodged an emergency application for a judicial review of Pootss order on Thursday with a hearing expected on Friday.

During the initial hearing it emerged that the checks would not be stopped until Monday at the earliest.

French Champagne makers say they have no plans to sell UK governments Brexit pint bottles – The Independent

Posted: at 5:36 am

French Champagne producers have said they have no plans to sell their sparkling wine in pint measures any time soon, despite the hopes of Brexiteers.

The government has touted bringing back the pint measure for Champagne as a supposed "Brexit win" but practical difficulties mean the product is unlikely to actually hit shelves.

Even Pol Roger, the Champagne house famously favoured by Winston Churchill and the former producer of pint bottles, told The Independent the idea was a "non-story".

A relatively small number of pint bottles were sold in the UK before Britain entered the European Common Market until 1973 but their production ceased because they did not comply with EU weights and measures rules.

Liz Truss, the foreign secretary, is said to be keen on bringing the smaller bottles back as a way of highlighting the supposed benefits of Brexit. Brexit-supporting newspapers have repeatedly touted the idea, with encouragement from the Cabinet Office's "Brexit opportunities unit", which is desperately seeking to justify the break with Europe.

The bottles have a historic link with Winston Churchill, who claimed they were the perfect size.

But the idea would require French Champagne makers to actually choose to use the imperial measure, and a number of practical problems are preventing a comeback.

One is that the glass bottles needed are largely produced in France, but the last mould to produce pint-sized sparkling wine bottles was lost long ago.

Pol Roger, which once shipped pint bottles to the UK in cases of 16, says it would cost tens of thousands of pounds for glassmakers to create a new pint mould making it a risky business proposition with no obvious benefit.

"We tried to encourage our French [operation] to look at it and they've looked at it," James Simpson, managing director of Pol Roger Ltd in the UK, told The Independent.

And the requirement for Champagne to be aged in its bottle means that even if producers wanted to, and started producing pints this year, they would not be ready until 2026 at the very.earliest

"We can't just decant from the bottle in the pint bottle and say 'hey we've got it'. How do I put this gently? It's a non-story trying to be a story which we've sort of encouraged over the years because it amuses us, and it harks a bit back to the Churchill link," Mr Simpson said.

The government has also been dragging its feet on legalising the measure, and has not yet actually done so. It is understood that officials are debating whether to introduce actual imperial pints, or to opt for the easier 500ml measure.

The latter size would have the advantage of potentially being exportable to other countries, meaning the wine might one day be able to be sold outside the UK whereas a true imperial pint of 568ml unlikely to be useful anywhere except the UK.

Non-sparkling wine is already allowed to be sold in 500ml under both EU and UK rules, and bottle moulds already exist for the size but going with the decimal measure would undermine the government's claims that it can bring back imperial measures now Britain has left the European Union.

One English sparkling wine house, Rathfinny in Sussex, has already produced 800 of bottles of its drink in 500ml bottles in anticipation of a rule change for the decimal measure.

France's other champagne makers have also confirmed they have no plans to produce pints, or simply ignored the situation. Mot & Chandon, the largest of all the champagne houses, declined to commit to the measure when approached by The Independent, while a spokesperson for G.H. Mumm, another one of the big four producers, said: "We can indeed confirm that we have no plans to produce and sell champagne in pint bottles."

Industry insiders say English sparkling wine producers are keener on the rule change, but actual French Champagne houses have shown little to no interest in bringing anything to market.

"I think actually the English sparkling wine boys are pressing rather harder than we are at the moment," Mr Simpson said.
