Budget 2022 expectations: Will FM Nirmala Sitharaman provide much-needed booster shot to Ayurveda Industry? – Financial Express

Posted: January 29, 2022 at 11:55 pm

By Dr. Sanchit Sharma,

As Ayurveda takes over the world as an alternate system of treatment and medication, the Ayurveda sector in India eyes the Union Budget 2022 for a probable push towards better Research and Development of the ancient science of life. Ayurveda has been providing holistic solutions to ailments, physical and mental, for ages, but notable progress on the science has been made only in the last decade.

With the influence of biomedicine, Ayurveda has furthered itself towards medicalization. Standardization and professionalization of Ayurveda through practice and application at the community, individuals, and healthcare providers level has further contributed to enhancing the Ayurvedic sector. Despite the progress, leveraging the Herbal, AYUSH, and the Nutraceutical Industrys domestic and export potential is yet another thing. The industrial outcome pertaining to meeting such demands may not come without a generous consideration from the government.

Ayurveda as Alternative Medicine System

The understanding of health in Ayurveda is based on adaptive feedback, which each person establishes with the environment. It is more than a biological process involving mind and body fitness. Ayurveda today has prospered as an alternative medication even for people with critical illnesses. It has largely been helpful for people with chronic debilitating conditions to take medications under conditions of critical care.

Besides mentioned properties, with the intervention of Ayurveda in routine lives, people have subscribed to the notion of enhanced immunity with regular use. The science of from the plants to the plates has effectively changed the notion of health, which was seen as the absence of disease by healthcare providers. The emphasis is instead on the constant state of living, which Ayurveda continually expands on.

Ayurveda under Governments Push

In the face of the global health crisis, the NDA government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has propounded the idea of combating Covid-19 with the holistic human science, Ayurveda. It has commendable and wholesome therapeutic properties as a practicable alternative healthcare system. Now that we know the importance of natural immunity, the need for Ayurveda, its practice, and its application has been all the more lucid to us. In the fourth chapter of the Global Ayurveda Festival held last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated the goodness and impact of Ayurveda and traditional medication. Mr. Modi also emphasized the importance of integrating Ayurveda with evidence-based medical science at the Festival.

Previously, the Government has undertaken popular surveys on peoples familiarity with Ayurveda through the ministry of AYUSH. Moreover, the Government has been promoting the sale of Ayurvedic medicine through Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) at various outlets across the country.

Budget Estimates for Ayurveda 2022

Last year, the Ayurvedic Sector requested Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to announce a GST waiver on products with a license (a maximum of 5% on supplements and nil on Ayurvedic products), enabling customers to buy over-the-counter Ayurvedic medicines at lower prices. In the prior budget, the sector was anticipating that it would be focused on Research and Development and Innovation.

One of the agendas of the Association of Herbal and Nutraceutical Manufacturers of India (AHNMI) was the establishment of a cross-ministerial task force under a Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, which would also be a stepping stone to make nutraceuticals into $25 billion industry by 2030. A separate budget for the manufacture, procurement, and marketing of Ayurvedic medicine is expected in 2022. Boosting Ayurvedic medicine in line with the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision of PM Narendra Modi is also foreseen.

Conclusion

To ensure sustainability for the Ayurveda industries to compete with world leaders, the 2022 budget is a vital aspect of the sector. From the pioneers of Research in Ayurveda to healthcare providers, the 2022 budget would create a unique ecosystem that makes the science of Ayurveda more acceptable to the masses.

5 Herbal Teas That Interact With Drugs and Medications – Livestrong

Posted: at 11:55 pm

While most herbal teas are safe to drink, people with certain health conditions and those who take medication should check in with their doctor.

If you're craving a flavorful drink without added sugar or with less caffeine, or you just aren't a coffee fan (we see you), tea is a great alternative. Whether you want something fruity like hibiscus or citrusy and floral like Earl Grey, tea boasts plenty of health benefits.

But before you start swinging cup after cup, one crucial step many people often make when drinking herbal teas is not checking in with their doctor or dietitian before introducing them into their diets.

"Many people believe that 'natural' is safer and don't consider the possibility that natural herbal teas may interact with drugs or have negative side effects for certain medical conditions like pregnancy," says Amber Trejo, RDN, dietitian and founder of Naked Wellness. "It's also important to note that herbal teas aren't regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)."

Although most herbal teas are generally considered safe in modest amounts, people who live with certain health conditions should limit or avoid some herbal teas, says Tamar Samuels, RD, CDN, co-founder of Culina Health.

For example, if you have diabetes, are taking blood thinners for stroke prevention or are on antidepressants, drinking certain herbal teas may interact with your medications. We flagged some herbal teas you should limit or avoid drinking altogether if you live with these health conditions.

Samuels recommends taking medications 2 to 3 hours apart from drinking tea if you're concerned about potential interactions. Talk to your doctor if you're unsure about specific herb-drug interactions.

Medications that have a narrow therapeutic window meaning small changes in the blood concentration of the drug can cause adverse events have a greater chance of interacting with herbal teas, Samuels explains.

"If you're taking cyclosporine (immunosuppressant), anticoagulants (blood thinners), digoxin (medication for heart failure or irregular heart rhythm) or anticonvulsive drugs, it is best to work with a healthcare provider to determine which herbal teas are safest for you."

This nighttime favorite has been used to help with sleep because it helps reduce anxiety, thanks to its mild tranquilizing effects, according to a November 2010 article in Molecular Medicine Reports.

Chamomile may also help lower blood sugar levels in people with diabetes. According to a small January 2016 study in Nutrition, short-term intake of chamomile tea has beneficial effects on glycemic control in people with type 2 diabetes.

But drinking copious amounts may significantly lower your blood sugar.

"Lowering blood sugar too much can result in a hypoglycemic event. If you are a person with diabetes, you don't have to avoid chamomile tea but should monitor your blood sugar closely should you choose to drink it. Working with a registered dietitian can help determine if or how much chamomile tea is safe for you," Samuels says.

Green tea has also been shown to interact with some medications that are used to treat heart conditions, Samuels says, so it's best to limit green tea if you are taking these medications.

"Green tea leaves (dried) contain vitamin K, which can increase blood clotting. Large amounts of vitamin K may interfere with the activity of some blood thinners, like warfarin," Dunn says.

"Lisinopril is frequently prescribed for treating hypertension and heart failure, so people taking it should limit their consumption of green tea and green tea extracts because they can decrease the effectiveness of the drug."

"Gingko tea and green tea should be avoided if you have a health condition that requires the use of blood-thinning medications, including Coumadin (warfarin), Plavix (clopidogrel), aspirin and other anticoagulants," Samuels says.

This is because ginkgo biloba slows blood clotting, and taking it in conjunction with other drugs, such as ibuprofen, naproxen or aspirin, can increase your risk of bleeding, says Brittany Dunn, RD, a sports dietitian and performance chef.

People who have epilepsy or those taking antidepressants avoid drinking ginkgo tea, Trejo notes. Taking large amounts of ginkgo may cause seizures and reduce the effectiveness of anticonvulsant drugs, per the Mayo Clinic. It might also weaken certain antidepressants, such as fluoxetine (Prozac and Sarafem) and imipramine (Tonfranil).

4. Ginseng and Licorice Teas

Just like ginkgo biloba, ginseng and licorice teas can reduce the effectiveness of anticoagulant medications including warfarin, Samuels says. Avoid these teas if you experience blood clots and have deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or other health conditions that are treated with anticoagulants.

Ginseng can also reduce the effectiveness of certain chemotherapeutic and HIV agents, calcium channel blockers, some statin medications and certain antidepressants, Dunn says.

"Calcium channel blockers are used to treat high blood pressure and may also be prescribed to mitigate symptoms of coronary artery disease, arrhythmia, angina, high cholesterol and other risk factors for cardiovascular disease," Dunn says.

St. John's wort interacts with a variety of medications, including antidepressants, birth control pills, cyclosporine, HIV drugs and blood thinners, Trejo says, so make sure to talk with your doctor before you drink teas with St. John's wort.

Although many people claim that St. John's wort can help treat depression in combination with antidepressants, the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health says that adding St. John's wort to your depression treatment plan can lead to dangerous levels of serotonin in the body.

Submission supported by data from a Phase 3 bridging study of oliceridine injection compared to IV morphine, conducted in China by Nhwa

Trevena is eligible to receive future success payments upon approval and commercialization milestones, as well as a 10% royalty on net sales in China

CHESTERBROOK, Pa., Jan. 27, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Trevena, Inc. (Nasdaq: TRVN), a biopharmaceutical company focused on the development and commercialization of novel medicines for patients with central nervous system (CNS) disorders, today announced that Chinas National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) has accepted submission of a New Drug Application (NDA) for oliceridine injection. The NDA was submitted by Trevenas partner, Jiangsu Nhwa Pharmaceutical, and follows completion by Nhwa of a Phase 3 bridging trial for OLINVYK (oliceridine) injection, a novel IV analgesic that has been approved in the United States by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in adults for the management of acute pain severe enough to require an intravenous opioid analgesic and for whom alternative treatments are inadequate.

"We are pleased to see the data presented in Nhwas NDA submission are consistent with data from our registration studies in the US, said Carrie Bourdow, President and CEO of Trevena. We are confident that Nhwa is the right strategic partner to advance OLINVYK in China and believe that this collaboration has the potential to create significant value for our stakeholders over the years ahead.

Trevena executed an exclusive License Agreement in 2018 with Nhwa to develop, manufacture, and commercialize OLINVYK in China and is eligible to receive regulatory and commercial milestone payments as well a 10% royalty on net sales in China.

Nhwas submission to the NMPA included data from two clinical bridging studies in Chinese patients, based on feedback from Chinas NMPA: a dose-escalation, open-label, single-dose study to evaluate the pharmacokinetics and safety profile; and a randomized, double-blind, positive-controlled Phase 3 bridging study in subjects with moderate to severe acute pain after abdominal surgery to evaluate the analgesic efficacy and safety of OLINVYK compared with IV morphine.

The results of the Phase 3 bridging study show that the safety and pharmacokinetic profile of oliceridine in Chinese patients is consistent with the data from global studies and demonstrates safety and tolerability in Chinese populations. The launch of OLINVYK in China, if approved by the NMPA, will help to address the significant unmet need in acute pain management.

AYUSH UG counselling: Registration begins; here’s the checklist – Onmanorama

Posted: at 11:55 pm

The registration for national-level counselling for undergraduate AYUSH courses for the academic year 202122 began on Saturday, 29 January.

Aspirants who have cleared the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (Undergraduate) or NEET (UG), 2021, can register on the website http://www.aaccc.gov.in and do choice filling from Sunday, 30 January, onwards. The website is of the Ayush Admissions Central Counseling Committee.

(AYUSH is an acronym for Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy. These are the six indigenous alternative medicine systems practised in India.)

No scope for changes or editsThe candidates must note that the information that you give during the registration would be final and wouldnt get another chance to change or edit it. Applicants who register more than once would be debarred.

Four rounds of counselling There are four rounds of counselling preceding the AYUSH course admissions. They are Round 1, 2, 3 ( (mopup) and the stray vacancy round.

Aspirants may register before the first three rounds within the stipulated dates. The number of seats that are up for grabs would be less from the second round onwards.

Candidates wouldnt be eligible for admission only because they got an allotment. They should meet all the eligibility criteria to secure admission to the courses.

They need to keep in mind the unique guidelines and fee structure of each institution before applying.

The seatsThe undergraduate seats for which the counselling is being held are in the following institutions:

1)Government/aided colleges in all the states and Union Territories except Jammu and Kashmir. (The AllIndia quota is 15%.)2)100% seats in Banaras Hindu University (Ayurveda), Delhi University (Ayurveda, Unani and Homeopathy) and deemed universities (all four branches)3)100% seats except those for nominated candidates in the Institute of Teaching and Research, Jamnagar (Ayurveda); National Institute of Ayurveda, Jaipur; and National Institute of Homoeopathy, Kolkata,4) 50% in Aligarh Muslim University (Unani) and North-Eastern Institute of Ayurveda & Homoeopathy (NEIAH), Shillong (Ayurveda and Homeopathy).

The seat allotment to 15% AllIndia quota at the private institutes that arent deemed universities would be done by the state governments. All the seats at minority institutions of Jain/ Muslim/ Hindi Linguistic communities are wholly reserved for these categories.

Share of reservationReservations are available as per the guidelines of the central government1) for 15% AllIndia quota seats and at central universities and national institutes2) 15% for Scheduled Castes3) 7.5% for Scheduled Tribes4) 27% for Other Backward Classes, and5) 10% for Economically Weaker Sections.

The remaining 40.5% seats are open for the General category.

Also, 5% seats in each category are reserved for persons with disabilities.

Thiruvananthapuram Medical College is included in the list of 15 approved institutes that could issue certificates of disability.

Fee structureDeemed universities: Rs 5,000 as registration fee and Rs 50,000 as security deposit. The candidates have to pay a total of Rs 55,000. There is no waiver for any categories.

All central seats including AllIndia quota (barring deemed universities): Rs 1,000 for registration. The security deposit would be Rs 10,000. That would be a total of Rs 11,000. Meanwhile, it is Rs 500 and Rs 10,000 for Scheduled Castes/Tribes and persons with disabilities, making for a total of Rs 10,500.

The payment page would be opened as soon as you complete the registration. Fee could be paid using net banking/card.

Other guidelinesThe mobile number and the email id that were given during the application for NEET should be used for registration. A new password should be created and kept for further use. It is better to use a computer/laptop for choice filling and not a mobile phone.

The applicants can submit any number of choices.

Do not forget to lock in the choices. The choices could be re-set or re-arranged until they are locked. In case the candidate doesnt lock the choices, it would be automatically locked at the stipulated time. Then follows the processing and allotment.

Those who didnt get seats despite registering for the first round need not register in the second round. Similarly, those who didnt get any seats allotted in the first and second rounds need not re-register for the mop-up round. However, they need to do the choice filling again.

Meanwhile, there is no registration for the stray vacancy round.

Even the MCC cannot unlock the choices once they are locked in. So, the applicants need to be careful and double check before locking the choices.

Upgradation and free exitUpgradation and free exit are possible only in the first round. However, the candidates have to reach the college and join in order to retain the seat that has been allotted in the first round. They can then request for upgradation. If the upgradation is allowed, then the aspirants should strictly get a relieving letter before giving up the first seat.

Those who got a seat in the first round but didnt get an upgradation in the second round can give up the first one without losing the security deposit (free exit). However, if they didnt give up the seat within five days after the second allotment is announced, the admission in the first round would be considered as retained. Besides, the candidate wouldnt get another chance at counselling.

Those who didnt join the seat that has been allotted in the second round can choose free exit. In case they join the college, the candidate can still leave the seat until three days before the mop-up round begins. They wouldnt lose their security deposit.

However, the applicant would be considered as disqualified if he/she doesnt choose such an exit option. Then they cannot attend the AYUSH counselling anywhere including the states. The security deposit would be lost if the candidate doesnt join the college after they receive seat in the mop-up or the stray vacancy round. They would be disqualified too.

If the aspirant gets an upgradation after securing a seat in the second or the mop-up rounds, the current seat would be lost.

Those candidates who join a college after securing seat in the mop-up allotment wouldnt be considered during the state counselling.

Documents neededThe list of documents that need to be submitted while joining the college are given in the counselling bulletin (pages 21,22). However, the candidates should go through the website of the respective college or contact them directly to enquire whether they require any additional documents.

Click on the Archives link in the News & Events section on the UG counselling web page to get an idea about the scope of admission based on your position in the rank list. The category-based list of the last ranks at which the candidates got admission in 202021 would be in the website.

Which Online Casino Games Are the Most Popular And Why? – Tech Guide

Posted: at 11:55 pm

Its no secret that the online casino industry is going from strength to strength right now. Already valued at around USD $54 billion in 2019, the sector is projected to enjoy compound annual growth of 11.5 per cent until the year 2027.

Thats no small chunk of change and attests to the widespread popularity that placing bets and laying wagers online holds at the present time.

Of course, not all online casino games are as lucrative or as widely played as others. Many people prefer simple rules and engaging graphics over other elements, while for some its more about strategy and outsmarting their opponents. With that in mind, heres a rundown of the most popular casino games and what makes them so irresistible to players.

Slots

Theres no doubt that online slot machines are the most popular form of internet gambling. With no complex rules to get your head around, themed offerings which riff on popular culture, bright, bouncy colours and stimulating sound effects, slots are simply a joy to play. Whats more, they offer some of the highest RTP (return to player) ratios of any online casino games and, if youre lucky enough to align the reels correctly, you can walk away with a substantial windfall.

Roulette

Another game of chance which attracts punters in their droves, the roulette wheel is invariably a hotbed of action and activity in a brick-and-mortar casino. The thrill of the spinning wheel and the thrum of the ball as it dances between segments is enough to set the heart racing, while the spirit of community and camaraderie that is shared between patrons is second to none. Thankfully, all of those elements translate into the cyberspace version of roulette, which is why its one of the most popular casino games out there.

Poker

Often considered an exquisite blend of luck and skill, poker gives you the opportunity to pit your wits against other players and try to best them using guile, strategy and subterfuge. Its one of the few facets of everyday life where deception is actively encouraged, which gives people an opportunity to exercise their darker arts. Whats more, its far more difficult for artificial intelligence to master poker than it is in chess or Go, for example, which is testament to the complexity of a game that seems so simple at first glance. Those nuanced layers of difficulty make it all the more enjoyable.

Blackjack

Given that both the dealer and the player rely on luck for a large part of the outcome of a blackjack hand, theres relatively little house edge in comparison to some other casino games. These favourable odds, alongside the straightforward nature of the games rules and the quickfire pace of its gameplay, make blackjack a firm favourite in the word of online gambling. Indeed, its popular with both courageous and cautious gamblers alike, since there are playing strategies which lend themselves well to both personalities.

Are your favourite casino games listed above? If not, let us know in the comments section below.

Game of Thrones Joffrey actor Jack Gleeson looks very different 10 years after hit drama… – The US Sun

Posted: at 11:54 pm

GAME Of Thrones star Jack Gleeson will forever be remembered as heartless tyrant Joffrey Baratheon in the fantasy epic.

But 10 years on from his debut in the show, the Irish actor, 29, looks very different with long hair and a moustache.

3

3

Having spent six years away from acting, Jack returned to work in 2020 on two very different projects: a stage version of novel To Be a Machine and TV comedy series Out of Her Mind.

The former explored the transhumanist movement - the belief and use of technology to further the capabilities of the human body, while the latter was a light-hearted six-parter with comedian Sarah Pascoe.

Jack temporarily 'retired' from the industry to focus on other passions but returned reinvigorated as the pandemic was taking hold of the world.

He was much maligned for his role of King Joffrey - a surefire sign he did a great job.

For three seasons fans of the show watched the character become increasingly unhinged and cruel before he died in a gloriously savage poisoning scene.

While the moment was one of the most memorable in its entire history, Jack didn't rate his performance.

He previously told Vulture: "I dont know if theres a scene where I did my best work, but the final scene I appear in is when Joffreys corpse is lying on a plinthin the set and I just got to sleep for the whole day. That was a fun experience.

"They put these ceremonial stones on my eyes. You know when youre dozing off, and then you wake up and you realize that you were asleep, but you shouldnt have been, and you kind of [jolts]?I got like that. That was the one I enjoyed the most. It was also the one I gave my worst performance."

Embracing the popularity the character has given him, Jack has attended numerous fan conventions over the years.

The latest of which was scheduled for next month in Las Vegas, however, has now been delayed.

Away from the hubbub of those events, Jack keeps a low profile. He said in 2016: "Ive tried to live as normal a life as possible, almost to an extreme extent. My flat in London where I live alone is really not very lavish."

Top 7 of the Best Seinen Anime to Watch – UrbanMatter

Posted: at 11:54 pm

Darker and more mature-themed anime are called seinen. Beyond the loud, adrenaline-fueled action sequences of the more child-friendly shounen genre, seinen shows place greater emphasis on the viewers ability to contemplate and reflect, providing them an avenue to explore a shows conflicts with more gravitas, and in a grounded, realistic manner.

While it isnt a rule, seinen excels in the grimdark, the solemn, and the cynical. Most seinen anime are aimed towards the young adult demographic, although many enjoy broad appeal from both adolescents and old-timers interested in deep, philosophical discussions, character dramas, and more serious portrayals about society and human nature.

This article lists down some perennial favorites of the seinen genre. After bingeing a series, viewers should feel well-equipped to discuss quandaries such as morality in organized crime, the rise of artificial intelligence and transhumanism, the inevitability of death, or the thin line between humanity and monstrosity.

Dont let the catchy opening theme song lull you into thinking this show is about happy hour at some ordinary bar.

For starters, said bar caters to the souls of the dead. There, emotionless entities called Arbiters serve drinks and preside over Death Games, in which two souls compete over whimsical bar games such as twister, darts and billiards to earn a chance at resurrection or eternity consigned to the endless void.

The show explores the sordid scenarios that led to each players demise, depicting how different people would react to their deaths and the afterlife. Its story is a tear-jerking, existential ride thatll pair well with any alcoholic drink on the shelf.

For the adventuring type, Black Lagoon will let you explore the criminal underbelly of Southeast Asia with the help of the Lagoon Company mercenaries.

This show is a slick symphony of gun-running, diesel-burning, thug-torturing action, revolving around the mercs missions as modern-day pirates at sea. While Rock is ostensibly the main character, the real captain of this show is Revy, a rough, loudmouthed and lethal hitwoman.

The violence can get unapologetically insane, boasting such sights as an operative dressed as a nun assassinating criminals at a church, or a gunship launching its undersea torpedoes at a helicopter and winning. With swagger in spades, this show is a staple for any seinen spree.

Not all seinen series have to be violent, melodramatic and depressing.

As a romantic comedy, Kaguya-sama is a mostly light-hearted dive into the minds of two of the most intelligent but emotionally-stunted geniuses in an academy for the elites. It is, however, interwoven well with commentary on Japanese society.

The shows leads, Kaguya Shinomiya and Miyuki Shirogane, secretly like each other, but with their fragile egos on the line, neither is willing to make the first move and confess their feelings first. This has, quite logically, led to them pursuing a variety of strategies more complex than those used in the actual Cold War to get a confession out of the other.

With a lovable ensemble of side characters like the society-lamenting Ishigami, and a pink madwoman named Chika, Kaguya-sama has risen into one of the decades newest and most popular seinen so far.

When the Catholics go crusading, and the Nazis start invading, odds are that theyre both after animes premier vampire anti-hero, Alucard. Most horror anime series pit the main characters against all sorts of vile, nightmarish monsters. In Hellsing, the main character is the monster.

The Hellsing series is a maddeningly fun power fantasy, following Alucard as he goes on missions at the behest of the Hellsing Organization, an order of Protestant knights tasked with protecting the United Kingdom by exterminating the forces of the undead.

Both the original and OVA series are excellent escapades into a world where people explode into oceans of blood and firearms are as abundant as rosaries.

Early in the series, Alucard turns a dying policewoman named Seras Victoria, who tags along as another main character through whose perspective are concepts such as retaining ones humanity and embracing vampirism are explored.

What could be more aesthetically pleasing than being sad in space?

Decades after a catastrophic hyperspace incident ruined life on Earth, humans have settled into colonies based on the Solar Systems other planets and moons. Bounty hunters known as Cowboys are paid by the Inter Solar System Police to capture criminals, with the series main characters being said Cowboys operating aboard their spaceship Bebop.

The action and excitement of navigating space as the new Wild West only serves as a backdrop for the intensely melancholic and existential internal issues that plague the cast.

The recent Netflix adaptation was a ridiculous disaster, and this classic science-fiction seinen is best enjoyed in its original 1998 version, where its comedic elements shine and its cyberpunk space opera aspects are the most visually stunning.

Jojos Bizarre Adventure is violently fabulous. A persisting aspect of modern-day meme culture, this seemingly easy-going series is home to one of animes most malevolent entities DIO as well as a cadre of other unforgettable villains.

The series is split into different seasons, each set in various periods from the Victorian era to modern-day Japan. Members of the Joestar family and other gifted individuals have the power to wield Stands, psychic manifestations of their spirit that can meddle with the real world.

Chances are that youve heard Guts theme from this anime on several memes or videos before. The lamenting tone of that song may have become the background music for many hilarious shorts, but Berserk itself is a never-ending thrill ride of horrific tragedy, brutality and despair in a dark world of fantasy. You have been warned.

Centered on Guts, a drifting mercenary whose mother was a hanged corpse by the time he exited her womb, the show deals with his employment under a bandit guild known as the Band of the Hawk. Prominent characters include the guilds leader, Griffith, whose ambitions to start his own kingdom cause an astronomical amount of mind-shattering anguish to everyone throughout the series, and Casca, Guts unit commander turned lover.

Berserk has been praised for its realistic depictions of characters in various states of trauma, angst and depression, with its cerebral and thought-provoking themes complemented by a nice amount of exhilarating violence and vengeance.

Where will the world be in the next 300 years? – NIGERIAN TRIBUNE

Posted: at 11:54 pm

The world is a flux, ever-moving, ever-changing, we are not where we were 300 years ago. This week on WhatsApp Conversation, we imagine what the world would be in 300 years.

Adeola Adejuwon

300 Years!

My prediction is religion losing its hold on people or people becoming more aware of the absurdities of certain beliefs as science continues to expand the scope of whats possible.

Through transhumanism, there will be cures for most genetic disorders and diseases and people can live much longer.

However, if you think were not seeing eye-to-eye on certain sociopolitical discussions, itll probably be much worse then.

Stella Eberechukwu

The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households.

Thats a quote from about 2400 years ago. Not related to technology, but as different as things seem, the more they are the same. In 300 years, I can only imagine where the state of parenting will be. The discrepancy between good and bad would have been further blurred into almost a state of oblivion.

Tokunboh Aderopo

During the 2000s, I was wondering where the hell that future we were promised was, and wishing it would hurry up and get here. Now as we close out the 2020s, Im wishing it would slow down and stop trying to get here all at once.

Were going to have some interesting challenges coming up, and I believe the next few centuries are going to be a critical point in human history. What happens during our lifetime is going to do a lot to determine the path humanity takes far into the future. Hope we choose well.

Tomisin Salami

The ratio of intelligent people to non-intelligent people at the moment, there will most likely have been a war of the century at that time, and rather than focusing on the development of the planet, it will most likely be about rebuilding and surviving effects. With the course we are on, there will be great changes in respect to technology, climatic happenings. We are on a warpath with each other and with our planet.

The wealth of the world will be concentrated in the hands of a few, this has always been the case but it will become even more pronounced.

Amos Oni

We massively over-simplify the past because well never be able to fully comprehend or understand what it felt like to be alive at the time. The agricultural revolution, urbanization, and change from hunter-gatherer to a more sedentary lifestyle might seem like an improvement and slow change to us but it wouldve been a massive change that brought incredible uncertainty. There are suddenly several diseases, infections, dangers, side effects and more that come with this change that people were not prepared for and wouldnt necessarily understand.

The difference now is that, even though our technological and societal changes are happening more rapidly, we have the foresight to think about the changes and the knowledge to adapt to changes.

We can discuss AI, privacy, automation, universal wages, climate change, etc. and take precautions or make changes as its happening. We know these things are coming and, even though they might be uncertain and confusing, we are significantly more prepared than we ever were in the past.

Anyway, Im pretty hopeful for the future. Were much safer, healthier, and more educated than ever before. In 300 years, it will be incredible to see what the world will be like.

Tosin Awoniyi

In the next 300 years, I think the world would have advanced in technology, how? We shall probably find a cure for certain types of incurable diseases. There would be many new technologies and perhaps the government would hide the possibility of time travel. In short, everything would change.

Our genetic ambitions would outpace our safeguards. Artificial Intelligence should not surpass us, otherwise, It would be disastrous. We cannot stop the world which is moving at the speed of light, but we can try and work it out in different ways. We can save the surrounding environment by planting trees or by simply trying not to destroy them.

Mercy Kabawa

The change over the past 200-250 years has been qualitatively different. For thousands of years before the industrial revolution, settled society was primarily agricultural, and 80-90% of humanity was rural. Moreover, capital accumulation was much slower, by and large. Industrialization has created a world in which the primary systemic threat to the economy is under-consumption, not scarcity of supply. I think Adam Smith could scarcely imagine the preposterous productive capacity of modern industrial technologies when he implied a balanced relationship between supply and demand.

In the next 300 years, the dynamics are going to be even crazier, the world will become relatively smaller with depletion of natural resources and an explosion of human resources. It will be difficult but while many paint a picture of doom, I will put faith in the natural ability of humans to survive anything thrown at it. We will adapt and move forward. We always do.

Next week, the question is on drawing the line between what is real and what is not -What is something you cannot believe is a real thing but is actually real? To be part of the next edition, send your response to 08133601345 on WhatsApp.

Call for Papers: Theology, Religion, and Dune

Title: Theology, Religion, and Dune

Editor: Christopher A. Porter, Trinity College, University of Divinity

A mention of Frank Herberts Dune conjures up visions of warring houses, giant spice worms, mysterious Fremen, and the crucial spice melange. But within Herberts broad world building enterprise, his universe unashamedly embeds religious themes and theological frameworks in the narrative. From the obvious themes of messianism and jihad through to somewhat subtler engagements with gender, these themes often present strong contrasts between the culture of the 1965 publication and the variety of contextualised adaptations of the source material. Most recently the Dune universe has returned to prominence in Denis Villeneuves 2021 and 2023 two-part epic exploring the first book and has introduced many of these religious and theological themes to a broader audience. More broadly various adaptations such as the fated Alejandro Jodorowsky adaptation, the disavowed David Lynch filmcredited as Alan Smitheeand various small screen adaptions such as Children of Dune have all attempted to bring Frank Herberts vision to a media audience.

Therefore we are issuing a call for proposals to draw together a range of contributors to think through the theological and religious themes that make up the Dune universe, for an upcoming volume on Theology, Religion, and Dune in theTheology, Religion, and Pop Culture Series(Lexington Books: Fortress Press).Drawing on the source material in the Frank Herbert novels as well as the various adaptations for the silver and small screen this volume will examine how these aspects intersect with sci-fi and popular cultures broad religious and contextual engagement. From the richness of Herberts universe the reflections of this volume will advance our thinking on how religion and theology are adapted into the world and world-building of popular science fiction. A variety of methodological approaches is encouraged, especially those which intersect with science and philosophy of science.

This book will be part of theTheology, Religion, and Pop Culture Series, aimed at a wide, popular readership, especially those with an interest in the horror genre, as well as those academics interested in cultural studies in social power, violence, race, disability, queerness, and gender.

Possible themes include:

Possible chapter topics:

Timeframes:

Please send a 300-500 word abstract, along with a current CV tocporter@trinity.edu.au. Chapters length will be determined at a later date, based upon the number of accepted proposals. Proposals due by 14thMarch 2022, and response aimed to be by the 28thof March 2022. First submissions are anticipated for November 2022.
