Is golf gambling ready to explode? One PGA Tour rep says its a healthy bet. – Yahoo Sports
Posted: January 21, 2022 at 11:29 pm
Golf has found itself in a unique spot within the gambling world. Its currently one of the least bet on sports but possesses the upside to potentially ascend into the same category in which football and basketball reside.
Why?
Well, from a betting perspective, it has immense room to grow. As it stands, the lone options on most sportsbooks are to bet on the winner of the event, who will finish top 5, 10, 20, and matchups between players in the field. Over the course of a full PGA Tour schedule, wagering on the same ol bets can get tiresome.
Thats where live betting becomes interesting.
Imagine this scenario: Youre sitting on the couch, watching the Masters, and Justin Thomas reaches the 16th. With live betting, you can head to your choice of sportsbook app (we recommend our partner Tipico), and bet on what you think JT will make on the hole, as well as if hell hit the green in regulation or not. As you can see, the options quickly multiply when live betting is brought in.
Were not going to flip the switch to go from outright winner or FedExCup champion to Jon Rahm from 250 (yards), odds to get inside 15, 10, and 5 feet, Scott Warfield, the PGA Tours VP/Gaming said. There are steps that need to happen i.e., getting people familiar with what it would be like betting on a threesome getting the low score on a hole.
So, it may not be coming as quickly as gamblers around the world would like. However, this does tell us the Tour understands the product theyre able to put out would be fantastic.
Im not signing up for a 2022 goal, said Warfield. But a 2025 goal? I would like to believe we can be one of the top four or five bet-on sports if we do it right.
Another concept Warfield has mentioned is a BetCast. A television stream, separate from the main Golf Channel, CBS, or NBC broadcast, serving as a hub for all things gambling surrounding the tournament. Live odd changes, match-up tracking, and other graphics to keep the viewer plugged into whats happening on the betting side.
Story continues
Think of it as another option at your disposal when logging into ESPN+ to watch the event throughout the week.
Not only would this idea be unique in the golf world, but the sports space in general. A stream completely dedicated to covering a different angle with an opportunity to bring in new voices to host the broadcast. While the current voices of golf resonate with longtime viewers, the game could certainly use an influx of new personalities.
For golf betters across the country, its something to get excited about. For the Tour, its another revenue stream to tap into. Surely sportsbooks would be clawing tooth and nail to become the official book of the PGA Tour. In fact, some of them already have things in the works.
DraftKings will be live on-site at this years Waste Management Phoenix Open, BetMGM will provide odds on digital platforms, and FanDuel is expected to come in and provide their odds on the Tours social channels.
The LPGA continues to add options as well, as IMG Arena has secured that tours official sports betting data and live streaming distribution rights.
Only time will tell how golf betting grows in the next few seasons, but its impossible not to get excited about the potential.

Macau used to be China’s ‘good kid’, but as Beijing turns on its gambling industry, everything might change – ABC News
Posted: at 11:29 pm
Unlike Hong Kong, Macau has long been nicknamed"the good kid"by Beijing.
It was a playground for high rollers from the mainland, who turned this semi-autonomous port city into the world's richest gambling hub.
Macaulived under the same "one country, two systems"political model asHong Kong, just 62 kilometres away, allowing itto also operate a capitalist system in socialist China.
But the two cities were worlds apart.
While pro-democracy protests raged in Hong Kong in 2019, Macau was praised by Beijing authorities for its "patriotism".
But the arrest of one man signals everything might be about to change for this glittering hub of wealth and chance.
Last November, Macau police detained Alvin Chau, the city's so-called Junket King, aftermainland Chinese police ordered thearrest of the 47-year-old casino tycoon.
He was arrested by local authorities overallegations from China that he ran online gambling operations that involved more than 80,000 mainland gamblers.
The billionaire previously made huge investments in Australiancasinos until he was denied a travel visa to Australia in 2019 over money-laundering allegations.
The crackdown on Mr Chau has decimated Macau's gambling industry, which lost nearly $US5 billion ($6.94 billion) in Hong Kong stocks the day after his arrest.
His arrest also drew international attention to Macau's proposal toreformitscasino system, with all six casino operators to see their licences expirein June.
The proposal, released last Friday, aims atincreasinglocal ownership in casino firmswhile giving a maximum of six licences and banning licence transfers between casinos.
It hasalso sent a strong political message to the sector that, for years, dedicated itsloyalty to Beijing, according to Valarie Tan, a China studies analyst at the Mercator Institute for China Studies.
"The irony is that China is cracking down on the very industry which has been fundamental to sustain support in Macau for Beijing's rules,"she told ABC News.
"The arrest of Alvin Chau is a very, very strong signal to all the casino operators."
Mr Chau established his gambling empire by controlling the majority of VIP rooms in all Macau casinos.
His casino empire also extends to Japan and South-East Asia.
Mr Chau became known as the Junket King by providingVIP roomservices for high rollers, many of them government officials.
In 2013, almost 70 per cent of Macau's gambling revenues came from VIP room services, according to a report by investment consultancy Goldman Sachs.
But the gambling activities among officials concerned Chinese PresidentXi Jinping, who worried the capital outflow could interfere with his political goal ofcommon prosperity, according to Ms Tan.
"This idea of capital outflow has been defined by Beijing asan avenue for corrupt officials to export, save, cover and protect their illegal income,"said Ms Tan.
"This has been clearly defined in Xi Jinping's common prosperity, that he is coming down hard on officials' great income, illegal income, excessive income."
The General Association of Administrators and Promoters for Macau Gambling Industry has declined interview requests from ABC News.
But the association's president,Tony Kwok Chi-chung, told aHong Kong outlet that the arrest of Mr Chau would have "significant impacts"on the city's gambling industry, describing itsVIP services as "the leading sector".
Jasper Lio, sociologist and co-founder of Macaology, said Beijings crackdown on Mr Chau showed that like Hong Kong, Macau is now on a shorter leash.
"Since Xi Jinping took over, Beijing has placed national security at a higher place, and both Macau and Hong Kong are included in this consideration,"he said.
Macau depends on gambling for its survival.
In the first quarter of 2021, despite the impact of COVID-19, gambling contributed to 41.8 per cent of Macau's GDP, with every one in sevenresidents working in the sector, according to the Monetary Authority of Macau.
"We have a saying that there are only two types of jobs available to young people in Macau: Either work for the government or casinos,"Sunny Au Kam San, a veteran localpolitician, told ABC News.
The history of gambling can be traced back to the 19th centurywhen the colonial Portuguese rulers made it legal so that theycould collect taxes from casinos.
Mr Au said the lack of resources in Macau made gambling the city's primary source of income.
"When Macauwas handed over, Beijing also understood the reality and therefore allowed Macauto continue operating casinos."
Beijing also initially saw Macau's casinosas an opportunity to demonstrate its democratic system, according to Jasper Lio.
The core value of 'one country, two systems'is to remain within the existing system of the two cities,"said Mr Lio.
"In the case of Macao, it means the gambling sector will not only be maintainedbut also get better under Beijing's watch."
One way Beijing builds its connection to casinos is to open up the massive Chinese tourist market to them by making Macaothe only city where it islegal to gamble.
Today, like Australia, Macau's tourism heavily relies on the mainland Chinese market, with around 70 per cent of its 27.9 million visitors coming from the mainland in 2019.
When other countries shut their borders during the pandemic, mainland Chinese visitors consisted of 92 per cent of Macaus tourism market, according to Glenn McCartney, associate professor in integrated resorts and tourism management at the University of Macau.
"If you look at the numbers of half a million visitors per month, it's all from China,"saidMcCartney.
The heavy reliance on tourism specifically, gambling has put Macau into crisis during the pandemic, with its GDP dropping 56.3 per cent in 2020.
But for Beijing, the push forMacauto reduce its reliance on gambling is inevitable.
In 2021,Beijinglaunched a plan to diversify Macau's economy by asking both Macau and nearby Guangdongto invest in Hengqin, an area right between the two governance zones.
As Macau's reform on the casino system is on the way, that means new players may enter the market, and the three US resort companies and three Chinese-owned operators could lose their seats at the table.
Despite nerves within the industry, Dr McCartney said he was positive toward the potential reform of the casino licensing system.
"It will bring stability,"he said.
"One of the issues we've seen and also from Beijing authorities is that stability is very important in Macau."
As well as reigning in its economic reliance on a handful of high rollers,Beijing also undertook a political crackdown in Macau.
Last year, it banned the city'svigil assembly for the Tiananmen Massacre. It also forbid 21 pro-democracy candidates from running the legislative council election in September.
This coincided with China's implementation of a controversialnational security law in Hong Kong.
Sunny Au Kam San, the co-organiser of Macaus Tiananmen vigil and former council legislator, said that for years, Macau's pro-democracy group was so small that it posed little threat to the pro-Beijing camp.
"Allowing the pro-democracy group to run for elections at least could be symbolic and shows that Macau is undertaking 'one country, two systems',"said Mr Au.
"This move just makes people feel that even in Macau, the 'One Country, Two Systems'is fake."
Thearrest of Alvin Chau could just be the beginning for Macau, according to analyst Valarie Tan.
She said in the case of Hong Kong, Beijing overrantraditional pillars that heldup Hong Kong society, including press freedom and independent judiciary.
She said a similar crackdown could be implemented on the other side of the Pearl River mouth.
"We should pay attention to Macau to see how this will play out," she said.
"Macau has always been pro-Beijing and has always been a good boy. But will this trigger something else?"

Caesars Draws Ire of New York Gamblers After Weeks Of Glitches And Little Dialogue – Sports Handle
Posted: at 11:29 pm
For years, Dane Carroll would drive an hour or more from his Suffolk County home to New Jersey to make his NFL bets on the weekend. So like a lot of New York sports bettors, he was ready to pounce when online sports gambling went live in New York on Jan. 8.
Carroll wanted to take advantage of all the promotions operators were offering to round up customers at launch, so he downloaded the apps and signed up with FanDuel, DraftKings, BetRivers and Caesars, the first four companies to go live in New York.
One of those names had a particular appeal.
Id been to Vegas a few times. Caesars had the name recognition, so Im thinking, OK, I can capitalize on that. Carroll said.
Right away, however, Carroll began noticing issues with Caesars app. He saw that his telephone number was off by one digit in his profile, but when he went to change it, the app only gave him the option to change his e-mail address. He switched to the desktop version, but had the same problem. He tried different browsers, but again, there was no resolution.
These experiences sent Carroll down a frustrating rabbit hole of customer-service queries, none of which solved his problem. When he finally tracked down a customer-service number from New Jersey Caesars, of all places the voice on the line said the call center was closed, even though it was during listed business hours.
Then he heard a click. Every time he called, he got the same message and was hung up on.
But Carrolls greatest frustration came when he went to withdraw $300 of his initial $800 deposit plus winnings from a few football games. He requested a withdrawal on Jan. 16, but it stayed in the pending stage on his app for four days, with the money finally hitting his bank account Thursday. He said each of the three other apps he used got him his money in less than 24 hours.
Now, he said, hell drain his remaining balance with Caesars, however long that takes, then delete the app.
What theyre doing is borderline criminal, Carroll said.
Carrolls frustrating experience was among scores of complaints from New York bettors who have found Caesars betting app to be problematic. Among other problems, the app simply crashed for three hours on opening night, a glitch the company attributed to massive volume.
One bettor tried to use the apps live chat feature and found that his wait time was going to be considerable:
Matt Tonn, the New York City resident who emailed that screen shot to Jill Dorson after her initial Sports Handle story on the Caesars glitches, said he did eventually get his app working correctly and finally got an emailed response from Caesars.
Good news two weeks later :), Tonn said in an email.
Caesars early problems in the Empire State have reached the desks of elected officials. Sen. Joe Addabbo, the chairman of the committee on racing, gaming and wagering, said Caesars could simply watch the New York market pass it by like a freight train if it doesnt fix its technical issues soon.
I understand [bettors] frustration. What are they asking for? Answers. And the lack of response back, the lack of dialogue from Caesars, adds to the frustration, Addabbo said. We know this is not a small town were talking about. Its New York City and the state of New York. You know these are savvy sports betters with now this huge volume and youre Caesars. Youve got to be ready to handle that. I see all these commercials. Theyre not a rookie in the industry. What are you doing? I shake my head. Youve got to be kidding me.
As of publication time, Caesars had not responded to queries from Sports Handle about the snafus in New York. Caesars CEO Thomas Reeg told CNBCs Squawk Box that the sportsbook took 1 million bets in the first 39 hours of launch, which was nine times the volume of the previous state it opened in, Arizona.
When you have massive demand, thats when you see pinch points in your system, Reeg said before apologizing to New York bettors and adding, We will be better going forward and well improve with every weekend.
Without answers from Caesars, its impossible to know why their server crashed or why so many players have reported technical issues with the app. But one culprit could be the April acquisition of London-based William Hill, which included Hills Liberty Platform, the system that now powers all of Caesars various state wagering apps. Was the platform simply too small for the volume New York produced?
Its too soon to tell where that pinch point was exactly, but with the NFL playoffs moving swiftly along, Caesars may have already missed its only opportunity to make a good first impression in New York.
UPDATE: Shortly after publication of our story, Caesars issued the following statement:
Our customers are of the utmost importance to us and we apologize for any inconvenience theyve experienced since our launch in the Empire State. New Yorkers have tremendous passion for sports and the state operates on an unprecedented scale all its own. That scale has exposed issues in our platform and weve made numerous updates every day since launch to improve the customer experience. Additionally, we are continuing to increase our customer service capacity to ensure we can respond more quickly. Were committed to the state of New York for the long haul and want to assure every customer that we appreciate their feedback and are working to rectify these issues as quickly as we can.

Revolut app to block credit card payments to gambling websites – Independent.ie
Posted: at 11:29 pm
Banking app Revolut is to block credit card payments to gambling sites in Ireland, the Irish Independent can reveal.
he move follows this newspapers investigation showing that betting firms here are profiting from credit card payments made through contactless apps such as Apple Pay, Google Pay and Revolut.
Direct credit card betting is banned in Ireland under industry rules.
Revolut is planning to block the use of credit card funds on gambling sites in Ireland, in the same way that we do in the UK, a spokesperson for the payments firm told the Irish Independent.
This is in addition to the 48-hour gambling block that all users can currently activate themselves.
Revolut, which has 1.5 million users in Ireland, can be funded through either a credit card, bank withdrawal or debit card.
It has developed technology that can identify Revolut payments drawn specifically from credit cards and stop them being used for gambling sites.
The company currently uses this system to separate debit and credit cards for gambling sites in the UK, where credit card payments are banned under penalty of fines.
Betting firms currently describe credit card payments through Revolut and Apple Pay in Ireland as a loophole that isnt available to them in the UK.
They say that betting companies have no visibility of the breakdown in debit or credit card payments from Revolut bets.
The Irish Bookmakers Association, which oversees Irelands voluntary Safer Gambling Code, told the Irish Independent that the betting firms had not technically broken the credit card gambling rules.
A spokesperson for Junior Justice Minister James Browne, who is overseeing the Governments plans to introduce a gambling regulator in Ireland, told the Irish Independent that credit card betting through apps is outside the remit of the minister.
He said that the matter was one for the Irish Bookmakers Association. The ministers spokesperson added that the proposed new gambling regulator will have discretion to prohibit the use of credit cards where it is of the opinion that the use of that form of payment contributes to problematic gambling and behaviours.
A spokesperson for Irelands largest bookmaker, Paddy Power, said it was unknown how much the firm would lose as a result of the move, as the company does not know which payments from Revolut come from credit cards.
Online gambling is now a central part of betting firms income, rising from 26pc to 39pc of the multi-billion euro industry here, according to a recent report into the sector. Almost half of online bets are made from phones, with the firms investing heavily in their apps.
The number of gamblers suffering from addiction is way higher than the 30,000 to 40,000 cited in official estimates, according to Barry Grant, the CEO and founder of Problem Gambling Ireland and a counsellor in the area.
Its possibly up to three times that figure, he said. Credit card betting is a massive issue.
Last week, the Irish Independent revealed that another betting app, LiveScore Bet, was refusing to delete betting accounts on request. The company now exclusively streams hundreds of European football matches within its app.

Beverages With Benefits: Do They Really Work? OR Are Beauty Drinks Too Good to Be True? – The New York Times
Posted: at 11:27 pm
Kin is part of a flourishing functional beverage category, often branded with gradient, pastel colors, 1970s nostalgia logos and no alcohol. Poppi, Ruby, Superfrau, Dune Glow Remedy, Droplet, Brighter, Evexia Kafe, Sunwink and De Soi, co-founded by Katy Perry, assert that their seltzers, juices and tonics can heal you from the inside out with prebiotics, mushrooms, apple cider vinegar, collagen, ginger, antioxidants, amino acids, nootropics and adaptogens, which is not an accepted scientific term, despite rampant use in the wellness and beverage industries. Some of these ingredients are longtime home remedies and supplements recommended by doctors; others, like adaptogens, are more dubious in their claims and may amount to little more than marketing.
In any case, the drinks are selling. What can they actually do for you?
Purported benefits include a balanced gut, a relaxed mind and brighter skin similar to the promises supplements and topical skin-care products have always made. The caveat: these drinks are not regulated by the F.D.A. and none of the effects have been backed up by regulatory or trade commissions.
When I go to Sephora, its all of these products offering me moisture and anti-aging benefits, and its the same things you see going down these beverage aisles, said Andrea Hernndez, a food and beverage forecaster and the founder of Snaxshot, a newsletter about trendy seltzers, canned wines, dips, cereals and more. These drinks are literally labeling beauty as a function.
And people will pay up for anything perceived as a shortcut to beauty or better health.
Sales of functional beverages increased by almost 16 percent between November 2020 and November 2021, according to Spins, a data firm. Its one of the fastest growing, nonalcoholic drink categories in the United States. Brands like Poppi and Ruby are sold at mainstream supermarkets like Whole Foods; Erewhon, the California market chain, is an investor in Barcode.
In early January, Ms. Perry introduced De Soi, her sparkling aperitif made with mind mellowing adaptogens. Barcode, originally developed for N.B.A. players by Mubarak Malik, fancies itself a better-for-you Gatorade with adaptogens; and Ghia, aperitifs and spritzes with nervines (herbs that purport to boost energy and alleviate stress), became an influencer favorite on Instagram. Droplet sells a three-can sampler of its sparkling adaptogen drinks, Pretty Balanced, Pretty Happy and Pretty Bright, for $20.

3 Key Supplement and Wellness Trends to Watch in 2022 – Green Entrepreneur
Posted: at 11:27 pm
Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.
The coronavirus has fundamentally altered and elevated the health and wellness space in the last two years in ways that will continue to impact brands in 2022.
Faced with existential uncertainty and chronic stress, many people chose to focus on stabilizing their own health and wellness, taking active measures in order to reduce stress, improve sleep, and maintain both physical and mental health.
The demand for supplements skyrocketed, which makes sense. When reality feels out of control, consumers reach for products that help with mood, prevent illness and strengthen our systems for the challenges of uncertaintyand that demand is only predicted to grow.
Another by-product of the pandemic: Cannabis proved itself to be recession-proof, and millions of Americans found cannabinoids to be a key source of plant-derived stress relief. Mushrooms are having a moment as well (both psychedelic and otherwise), and their popularity further underscores the revived Western interest in ancient herbal medicine traditions and rising consumer appetite for plant-based alternatives to pharmaceutical drugs. Millennials and Gen Z are leading the charge in their openness to natural remedies and integrative healththeyre all about the ounce of prevention.
All of these developments are good news for consumers, brands, and investors in the supplement space as well as those in cannabis, hemp, and fungi. Here are the trends I see dominating markets in 2022.
Related:Here Are Some Smart Cannabis Predictions for 2022
Supplements that enhance cognitive performance are in higher demand than everafter all, who doesn't want a better brain? But increasingly, consumers are taking the long view, investing in supplements like pharmaceutical grade Omega-3s, CBD, herbs, and mushrooms with neuroprotective properties. Preserving brain function is top of mind for many older Americans; Gen Xers and millennials also want nootropics, but for different reasons. They seek natural brain boosters that will help them focus and increase their productivity without the unpleasant side effects of caffeine, sugar, or prescription medications.
Stress and upheaval of the pandemic have led people to place a higher priority on calm, clear thinking. The pandemic fundamentallyaltered our approach to mental healthmost of us found life tougher to navigate, and many people needed more support to cope with issues like fatigue and brain fog. No wonder nootropics that have been shown to reduce the impact of stress spiked in popularity.
The year 2022 may very well be fungis biggest year yet. Books like Michael Pollans How To Change Your Mind, the documentary Fantastic Fungi, and regular headlines on the genuinely thrilling new research emerging from the Johns Hopkins Psychedelic Research Unit have brought psychedelic exploration and therapeutics into the mainstream. Psychedelics are looking like the next big investor movementindeed, the psychedelic market is projected to reach $10.75 billion by 2027. At Fortune, investor Sean McClintock linked the rush to invest to the pandemic: In the context of a post-COVID world, psychedelic health care will become an essential tool in the treatment of worsening mental health issues.
Science is also revealing that even non-magic mushrooms have some pretty astounding qualities: from lion's mane and its impact on brain health, cordycepss immune system effects, and chagas anti-inflammatory properties, its no wonder a population newly interested in preventative health is seeking them out.
This seeming pipe dream of national cannabis legalization could actually become a reality in 2022. The first-ever Republican-proposed federal bill to legalize marijuana was introduced this past November; nearly half of the Republican voters support decriminalization at the federal level. A whopping 91% of Americans support legalization in some form. The DEA has signaled that Delta 8 (a controversial cannabinoid similar to THC thats usually derived from hemp) is not federally prohibited, which puts even more pressure on the federal government to act on legalization. A recent report from the Economic Policy Institute states frankly that Federal legalization of the cannabis industry appears likely to happen within the next few years. We may actually reach the tipping point for legalizing cannabis nationwide in the coming yearwhich would unleash a flood of change. New tax revenue alone is estimated at $128.8 billion, and legalization could result in 1.6 million new jobs. Research on cannabis therapeutics will explode. The economic impact will create disruption the likes of which Silicon Valley technologists could only dream of. Im keeping a close eye on this spaceanyone adjacent to health and wellness should do the same.
If weve learned anything in the pandemic, it's the need for resilience and the ability to adapt in the face of disruption and change. But consumers growing interest in natural and preventative health measures is, in my view, a positive development. Seeing health as a long-term commitment that involves daily choices, proactivity and self-care wont just drive marketsit will result in better health outcomes for everyone.

How To Clear Your Frazzled Brain and Regain Your Focus – Intelligent Living
Posted: at 11:27 pm
If you find it more challenging to concentrate than usual, some simple exercises and foods can help regain your focus.
Researchers have estimated that the average person will have over 6,000 thoughts per day. We must filter out most of this data to get anything done. If you have a task you need to complete, you must focus on that task and ignore any of these incoming thoughts.
Many people are having a challenging time focusing during the ongoing pandemic. However, according to Dr. Amishi Jha, a cognitive and behavioral neuroscience professor at the University of Miami, we can learn to focus better by training our brain as a muscle. Specifically with 3 to 12-minute bursts of daily exercises.
Dr. Jha highlights that stress is one of the biggest obstacles to focusing. In a high-alert state, we often start pondering and get stuck in loops of doom or imagined scenarios. In addition, this mode affects our working memory: the amount of information that our minds can hold and use for a task. Working memory is like a mental whiteboard with disappearing ink, explained Dr. Jha.
Once that whiteboard is filled with thoughts, feelings, and images relating to the root of our stress, theres no room for new data. We might start zoning out, blanking, or snapping at our loved ones, then feel guilty, which doesnt make focusing any easier it just makes it more challenging. Another issue is that we now have far more sources of distraction, like new apps, smartphones, and video games.
Short bursts of daily mindfulness training can help us notice the traffic of thoughts and urges that continuously distract us. One of these exercises involves sitting upright, closing your eyes, and focusing on where your breathing feels most prominent, typically in the chest or diaphragm. Direct your focus there like a beam of light and recognize when thoughts or sensations pull it away: a memory arising; a reminder that you need to reply to an email; an itch. Do this for 3 to 12 minutes every day, for one week.
While training your brain with simple daily exercises is very effective, some foods and beverages can also rejuvenate and boost the brain.
A pair of researchers discovered that a bioflavonoid called quercetin, found in pickled capers, can modulate proteins needed for bodily functions, including the heartbeat, brain, muscular contraction, thyroid, pancreas, and gastrointestinal tract.
Humans have used capers as traditional medicine for hundreds if not thousands of years. Scientists are studying them for their anti-cancer, anti-helminthic, anti-diabetic, and anti-inflammatory properties. Capers are the highest known natural source of quercetin, with a maximum concentration of 520 mg/100 g for canned capers and 323 mg/100 g quercetin for raw capers.
In a study published on July 8, 2020, in the journal Communications Biology, researchers from the Irvine School of Medicine at the University of California found that quercetin regulates potassium ion channels in the KCNQ gene family.
Potassium ion channels are incredibly influential in human health, and their malfunction is linked to many human diseases, such as epilepsy, cardiac arrhythmia, and diabetes.
The study revealed that quercetin regulates the KCNQ channels by modulating how they perceive electrical activity in the cell, suggesting an unexpected mechanism for capers therapeutic properties. Other quercetin-rich foods and quercetin-based nutritional supplements may also hold this mechanism.
An international group of scientists was inspired by the idea that mammals brain structure and function are likely shaped by evolving with exposure to particular diets. So, they conducted a study that focused on whether bioactive factors (natural compounds) found in apples directly affect hippocampal neurogenesis (the production of new brain cells) in the adult mouse.
The team led by Tara Louise Walker from the University of Queensland and Gerd Kempermann from the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases found that high concentrations of phytonutrients from apples could help boost brain function (learning and memory) by stimulating neurogenesis.
Phytonutrients are chemical substances in plants known to affect the body, including the brain, positively. Examples of phytonutrients include epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) in green tea and resveratrol in red grapes skin, which is linked to a reduced risk of age-related conditions such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.
The researchers found that its the quercetin (a flavonol in apple peel) and 3,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid found in apple flesh that does the work. The team used lab-grown stem cells from adult mouse brains. They added the phytonutrients commonly found in apples to the cell cultures. The brain cells were protected from death and generated more neurons when exposed to quercetin or dihydroxy benzoic acid (DHBA).
Further experiments with mice showed that stem cells multiplied and produced more neurons in distinct brain structures associated with memory and learning when the animals were given high doses of quercetin or DHBA. The effects were comparable to those experienced after physical exercise, an established stimulus for neurogenesis.
This studys takeaway is that natural compounds in the fruit, especially quercetin and DHBA, could promote better brain function when given high concentrations. However, further analysis is needed to prove if phytonutrients can enhance learning and cognitive function.
A 2019 study led by researchers from the National University of Singapore (NUS), in collaboration with researchers from the University of Essex and University of Cambridge, found that regular tea drinkers have better-organized brain regions than non-tea drinkers. Having the cells in your brain more organized is associated with healthy cognitive function. The team made this discovery by examining neuroimaging data of 36 older adults.

Transhumanism: The Most Dangerous Idea? – Reason.com
Posted: at 11:26 pm
"What ideas, if embraced, would pose the greatest threat to the welfare of humanity?" That question was posed to eight prominent policy intellectuals by the editors of Foreign Policy in its September/October issue (not yet available online). One of the eight savants consulted was Francis Fukuyama, professor of international political economy at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, author of Our Posthuman Future: Consequences of the Biotechnology Revolution, and a member of the President's Council on Bioethics. His choice for the world's most dangerous idea? Transhumanism.
In his Foreign Policy article, Fukuyama identifies transhumanism as "a strange liberation movement" that wants "nothing less than to liberate the human race from its biological constraints." Sounds ominous, no? But wait a minute, isn't human history (and prehistory) all about liberating more and more people from their biological constraints? After all, it's not as though most of us still live in our species' "natural state" as Pleistocene hunter-gatherers.
Human liberation from our biological constraints began when an ancestor first sharpened a stick and used it to kill an animal for food. Further liberation from biological constraints followed with fire, the wheel, domesticating animals, agriculture, metallurgy, city building, textiles, information storage by means of writing, the internal combustion engine, electric power generation, antibiotics, vaccines, transplants, and contraception. In a sense, the goal toward which humanity has been striving for millennia has been to liberate ourselves from more and more of our ancestors' biological constraints.
What is a human capacity anyway? Biologist Richard Dawkins has propounded the notion of an extended phenotype. Genes not only mold the bodies of organisms but also shape their behaviors. Some of those behaviors result in the creation of inanimate objects that help organisms to survive and reproduce, such as beaver dams and bird nests.
Our ancestors had no wings; now we fly. Our ancient forebears could not hear one another over 1,000 miles; now we phone. And our Stone Age progenitors averaged 25 years of life; now we live 75. Thanks to our knack for technological innovation, humanity has by far the largest extended phenotype of all creatures on planet Earth. Nothing could be more natural to human beings than striving to liberate ourselves from biological constraints.
But Fukuyama would undoubtedly respond that Pleistocene hunter-gatherers are still recognizably human, no different in their innate capacities than people living today. What transhumanists seek is very different. They want to go beyond current innate human capacities. They want to change human bodies and brains.
Of course, humans have been deliberately changing their bodies through athletic training and their brains through schooling. Nevertheless, Fukuyama has a point. Can one be so transformed by technology as to be no longer human? "Our good characteristics are intimately connected to our bad ones: If we weren't violent and aggressive, we wouldn't be able to defend ourselves; if we didn't have feelings of exclusivity, we wouldn't be loyal to those close to us; if we never felt jealousy, we would also never feel love," asserts Fukuyama. He seems to be arguing that to be a human being one must possess all of the emotional capacities characteristic of our species. If biotechnological manipulations removed our ability to feel emotions like anger, hate, or violence, we would in some sense not be human beings any more.
Let's say that future genetic engineers discover a gene for suicidal depression, and learn how to suppress the gene, or adjust it. Would fixing it make subsequent generations non-human beings? After all, most people today do not fall into suicidal depressions, and those happy people are no less human than, say, Sylvia Plath.
Depression can already be fixed for many people by means of Prozac or Paxil. Surely, taking serotonin re-uptake inhibitors does not make people other or less than human. Sufferers of depression will tell you that the drugs restore them to their true selves. It seems unreasonable to claim that in order to qualify as human beings, we all must have the capacity to succumb to berserker rage or religious ecstasy.
"The first victim of transhumanism might be equality," writes Fukuyama. "If we start transforming ourselves into something superior, what rights will these enhanced creatures claim, and what rights will they possess when compared to those left behind?" Fukuyama seems to be entertaining an X-Men-like fantasy in which enhanced posthumans seek to destroy unenhanced naturals. But where Fukuyama is a bit coy, left-leaning bioethicists George Annas, Lori Andrews, and Rosario Isasi are brutally blunt:
The new species, or "posthuman," will likely view the old "normal" humans as inferior, even savages, and fit for slavery or slaughter. The normals, on the other hand, may see the posthumans as a threat and if they can, may engage in a preemptive strike by killing the posthumans before they themselves are killed or enslaved by them. It is ultimately this predictable potential for genocide that makes species-altering experiments potential weapons of mass destruction, and makes the unaccountable genetic engineer a potential bioterrorist.
Let's take their over-the-top scenario down a notch or two. The enhancements that are likely to be available in the relatively near term to people now living will be pharmacologicalpills and shots to increase strength, lighten moods, and improve memory. Consequently, such interventions could be distributed to nearly everybody who wanted them. Later in this century, when safe genetic engineering becomes possible, it will enable parents to give their children beneficial genes for improved health and intelligence that other children already get naturally. Thus, safe genetic engineering in the long run is more likely to ameliorate than to exacerbate human inequality.
In any case, political equality has never rested on the facts of human biology. In prior centuries, when humans were all "naturals," tyranny, slavery, and purdah were common social and political arrangements. In fact, political liberalism is already the answer to Fukuyama's question about human and posthuman rights. In liberal societies the law is meant to apply equally to all, no matter how rich or poor, powerful or powerless, brilliant or stupid, enhanced or unenhanced.
The crowning achievement of the Enlightenment is the principle of tolerance, of putting up with people who look differently, talk differently, worship differently, and live differently than we do. In the future, our descendants may not all be natural homo sapiens, but they will still be moral beings who can be held accountable for their actions. There is no reason to think that the same liberal political and moral principles that apply to diverse human beings today wouldn't apply to relations among future humans and posthumans.
But what if enhanced posthumans took the Nietzschean superman option? What if they really did see unenhanced people "as inferior, even savages, and fit for slavery or slaughter"?
Let's face it, plenty of unenhanced humans have been quite capable of believing that millions of their fellow unenhanced humans were inferiors who needed to be eradicated. However, as liberal political institutions have spread and strengthened, they have increasingly restrained technologically superior groups from automatically wiping out less advanced peoples (which was usual throughout most of history). I suspect that this dynamic will continue in the future as biotechnology, nanotechnology, and computational technologies progressively increase people's capabilities and widen their choices.
In his famous book The End of History and the Last Man, Fukuyama declared that we are witnessing "the end point of mankind's ideological evolution and the universalization of Western liberal democracy as the final form of human government." Fair enough. But for Fukuyama, the end of history is a "sad time" because "daring, courage, imagination, and idealism will be replaced by economic calculation." Also, he claims, "in the post-historical period there will be neither art nor philosophy, just the perpetual caretaking of the museum of human history." How ironic that Fukuyama now spends his time demonizing transhumanism, a nascent philosophical and political movement that epitomizes the most daring, courageous, imaginative, and idealistic aspirations of humanity.
"The environmental movement has taught us humility and respect for the integrity of nonhuman nature. We need a similar humility concerning our human nature. If we do not develop it soon, we may unwittingly invite the transhumanists to deface humanity with their genetic bulldozers and psychotropic shopping malls," concludes Fukuyama. I say, bring on those genetic bulldozers and psychotropic shopping malls that help people to live healthier, smarter, and happier lives.
I have my own nomination for an "idea [that], if embraced, would pose the greatest threat to the welfare of humanity": Banning technological progress in the name of "humility."
