Schoen: Playing high-stakes poker with Putin – Boston Herald

Posted: at 11:38 pm

This week, Russian President Vladimir Putin sent forces into Kazakhstan to provide support to President Kassym-Jomart Tokayevs autocratic government amid violent protests that erupted over energy prices.

At the same time, thousands of Russian troops are currently massed on the border with Ukraine an escalation that raises serious concerns about a military invasion on par with Russias annexation of Crimea in 2014.

The Biden administration met with Russian officials this week in an attempt to defuse the Ukraine standoff, but their efforts were to no avail. Moscow is unrelentingly seeking an agreement from NATO to not expand its reach eastward into Ukraine and to end security cooperation with Ukraine proposals that the lead U.S. diplomat called non-starters.

To be sure, Russias actions individually and collectively with regard to Kazakhstan and Ukraine are part of a wider effort by Putin to reassert Russias dominance over former Soviet states, and to undermine both the actual and perceived strength of NATO.

And make no mistake, Putin is gaining ground in his quest.

Putins advances have been made possible by the fact that the United States and NATO lack a uniform strategy for dealing with non-NATO states that were part of the former Soviet Republic including Ukraine and Kazakhstan which former national security adviser John Bolton aptly noted in a recent piece for the Wall Street Journal.

Indeed, the U.S. said earlier this week that it would not intervene in the crisis in Kazakhstan, and the State Department went no further than to call for restraint by both the authorities and protestors. At the same time, the true extent of militaristic and economic support that the U.S. and NATO are willing to provide to Ukraine either in the event of a full-on Russian invasion, or absent one is unclear.

President Joe Biden reportedly warned Putin last month that an invasion of Ukraine would result in harsh economic sanctions, the disruption of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline and Ukraine receiving defensive capabilities from the West.

Despite Biden ostensibly drawing a red line, Putin has held his ground and continues to demand a guarantee that NATO will not expand eastward into Ukraine perhaps because Putin is testing the president, or because he has little reason to believe that Biden would follow through fully on his threats.

The U.S. has not drastically increased military aid to Ukraine since Biden took office, and in May, the administration waived sanctions against Nord Stream 2. And up until this point, Moscow has clearly not been deterred by any economic sanctions imposed against them.

Furthermore, the chaotic withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan in August which weakened Americas standing on the world stage, and also signals that the Biden administration is reluctant to engaging in future foreign wars has clearly emboldened Putin to behave more aggressively.

Whether or not Putin will actually engage in Ukraine has yet to be determined. Some have argued that because Kazakhstan a neighboring autocracy was thrown into chaos, Putin may be more likely to take aggressive actions to weaken Ukraine, which has been striving for democracy and working on integrating itself with the West.

To that end, I mostly agree with the argument made by those like former national security official Fiona Hill, who have said that the situation in Kazakhstan could very well accelerate Putins desire to do something in Ukraine.

However, I do not see Russian involvement in Kazakhstan as a sign that Putins influence is waning. While the uprising in Kazakhstan against the Russian-allied government there was not an ideal scenario for Russia, Putin can as I anticipate he will use the situation in Kazakhstan to his advantage with Ukraine and with other non-NATO former Soviet states.

Specifically, Putin can point to Moscows decisive intervention in Kazakhstan as evidence that Russia is a more reliable militaristic partner than NATO and the United States.

Putin is clearly already working to achieve this end. On Thursday, the Russian president effectively declared success in Russias mission to stabilize Kazakhstan, announcing that Russian troops had accomplished their task, and were preparing to return home. Earlier in the week, he had promised other pro-Russia ex-Soviet states that they would receive decisive Russian support in similar circumstances.

Following the withdrawal of troops from Kazakhstan, we can reasonably expect that Putin will ramp up efforts to undermine and pressure the democratically elected government of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky which has received lukewarm support from NATO especially given the lack of success of Russias talks with the U.S. and NATO this week.

To be sure, NATO could effectively stop Putin in his tracks or at the very least, anticipate his next moves if they had a concrete plan outlining the extent of support that they would provide to non-NATO former-Soviet states like Ukraine.

If Putin does invade Ukraine, the U.S. and NATO need to be prepared to take two concrete steps. First, to seriously consider suspending Russia from SWIFT, the global interbank payment system; and second, to begin providing lethal aid to the Ukrainian military.

Absent these two steps and a broader strategy, NATO would be effectively ceding Putin ground in his quest to re-gain control of former Soviet states and weaken the Western alliance.

Android apps to improve your poker skills (Promoted) – AndroidGuys

Posted: at 11:38 pm

You can improve your poker skills and game in many ways. Playing casual or real money games at your favourite online casino can help you get a feel for the game and understand the structure. Once you understand the basics, many apps and websites analyse your games and help you make better decisions. Read on for reviews on a few of the best poker training apps available on Android devices.

As mentioned above, the structure of poker games and calculators can be very confusing, especially for beginners. SnapShove gets rid of all the clutter and only shows you the important stats from your games. The app also helps you make the right decision during a game and trains you on the best ways to react to certain plays.

You can get a free or paid version. The free version analyses six and nine-handed games and offers some training. SnapShove pro offers games for any number of players and access to all their training resources.

PokerGo is an online streaming service that shows almost every televised poker game all in one place. You can watch shows, tournaments, commentary, and even the World Series of Poker. Apart from watching games played by international champions, you can access hand histories and analyses on each game you watch.

ShareMyPair is a revolutionary app that allows players to share their hand histories, get analysis, and replay the hand easily. One of the biggest challenges with sharing hand histories is writing out the whole game to describe a hand accurately. This app allows you to convert this wall of text into a game that players worldwide can replay and analyse. This app aims to change how players share and analyse past hands and helps players get many differing opinions on how they could have done better.

PokerCruncher claims to be The App Stores Top Texas Hold em Odds/Equity Calculator, and it seems there might be some truth to that. The app costs $12.99 to install, but it seems worth it. Its more than a simple calculator app. PokerCruncher gives you information on key points of your game, such as flop texture analysis as well as calculations of your odds. The app is very well known, and even poker coaches and vloggers use and promote it.

One of the easiest and cheapest ways to improve your poker skills is to use training apps and calculators like the ones we recommended in this article. Watching games and analysing hand histories are also extremely useful. Apps like those above give an in-depth analysis of your hand, your odds of winning, and other stats and analyses that help you make a good decision.

Once youve spent some time training and watching other poker games, youre ready to try casual and real money games at a casino. These are very different from the training, and you might need to go back to analyse your games and why they turned out a certain way.

Winning Poker: 4 Predictable Moves Good Players Make and How to Exploit Them – CardsChat.com

Posted: at 11:38 pm

January 21, 2022Poker Strategy

Ive recently been playing in a $2/$5 game in a nearby poker room. Its a very profitable game for me, even though the players are, on average, better than those in the $1/$2 games I typically play. I plan to continue to play in the $2/$5 game since my hourly win rate is considerably higher than in the smaller game.

Ive written extensively about taking advantage of the poor play of others; thats chiefly how I win money in $1/$2 games. Those players tend to be too loose, undisciplined, not very observant, and too mechanical. There are bad players in the $2/$5 game as well and, while their weaknesses may be different than those of the $1/$2 players, the same skills useful in winning money in the lower-stakes game are useful in winning money against the poor $2/$5 players.

And, because of the higher stakes, there is also additional profit to be made by exploiting some of the observable behavior of the better $2/$5 players.

Good players are good for many reasons and, oftentimes, one of their skills is their ability to play consistently. They avoid emotional play; they play rationally all, or nearly all of the time. And they vary their play, typically increasing their aggressiveness based on their read of their opponents and the situations theyre in.

Typical advice for playing against good players like this, who add aggressive moves based on their position, their opponents, and the different situations they encounter, is to avoid them, if possible, or to tighten up your play to account for their unpredictability. Rather than engage in a battle of wits, my standard advice is to avoid battles with good players entirely by either avoiding pots they are in or to leave the game entirely if its populated by too many of these good players.

There is, however, another route Ive found that can allow one to profit from these good players.

Many good players, while mixing up their games, tend to vary their play predictably. While they may vary their play with identical hands they are not so unpredictable as to vary their play in the same situation. Identify the situation they are in, and their variations become predictable and thus exploitable. Here are four situations where good players tend to make predictable plays you can exploit.

Some good players are very position-oriented. They vary their play positionally, but they tend to play similarly from similar positions. They are good enough to recognize the relative value of being in late position, and they play more aggressively and with a broader range when they are. Accordingly, one can often assume they are playing a much wider range when they are aggressive in these positions than when they follow the same action in early or middle position.

As such, you can exploit these good players by being more aggressive against them when they are aggressive in those positions.

Lets say youre under the gun with 4-4. You call the blinds and everyone else folds to the hijack, who raises to 3BB. The cutoff, button, and the SB fold. The BB calls. Typically, you would either call with this hand, looking to set mine, or you would fold as the raiser and the BB are both very tight and aggressive players.

If you call, youll see the flop and, if you dont hit your set, youll likely check fold to any aggression from either player. But against these two good players, you might recognize the preflop raise as a positional one made with a very broad range, and take a different line, 3-betting to nine or 10BB here, representing your own unusual strength.

If the hijack is on the weaker end of his range, he might well fold rather than risk being up against a superior hand. Similarly, the BB might conclude that his wide calling range is insufficient to call your 3-betting range when hed be out of position for the rest of the hand.

By three-betting preflop here, you might pick up the pot or set up a steal on the flop with the chance to improve your hand to a set along the way.

Good players often seek to exploit players they see as overly tight by playing more hands aggressively against them. You can exploit this by showing uncharacteristic aggression of your own, demonstrating to your perceptive opponent that you are, in fact, in possession of one of those few hands that are strong enough for you to play aggressively. Considering your relative tightness, they may choose to fight another day and concede the pot to you.

Good players, who have been successful and are ahead, sometimes become bolder about their willingness to call raises in position, convinced of their superiority after the flop. You can exploit this observable tendency by inserting a timely bit of aggression when they make these in-position calls. Being good disciplined players, they are apt to rectify their atypical looseness and fold to your aggression.

Not all of your exploitation requires aggressiveness on your part. Sometimes, you can profit by saving money when you notice behavior that indicates true strength.

Good players often try to avoid playing marginal hands against other good, aggressive players. This is sometimes referred to as passive collusion. As such, you can sometimes save money by being even more cautious than usual when a strong regular calls another strong players hand. When two good, aggressive players are willing to mix things up, it often indicates that at least one of them must be holding a strong hand.

Heres a quick example. Youre on the button with K J when a strong regular raises in early position. Everyone folds to another strong regular in the cutoff to your immediate right. Though he seldom plays against the other regular, he calls. Youre tempted to call as well with your semi-strong hand and with the pot somewhat engorged by having two opponents.

Fold instead.

Youre likely dominated. Your strong opponents playing in the hand together should indicate that at least one of them is very strong (most likely the latter player). If you hit your hand in any way other than perfectly, you stand to lose a lot of money against a stronger hand.

Most of your profit in poker, especially in the lower-limit No-Limit games like $1/$2 and $2/$5 will come from the poor or mediocre players. Seek out games with lots of them, but realize you can also profit from the good players who may underestimate your ability to exploit their predictable play.

100% deposit bonus up to $600!

Now, poker players at GGPoker will have the unique opportunity to use GIPHY while playing poker, by browsing the library in real-time and sharing GIFs that best portray their emotions and reactions to the other competitors.

This integration comes as part of the operators push to make the game more interactive, an objective which also led to the addition of SnapCam videos and dance emojis which have been around for a while.

While other sites have seen various improvements in recent months and years as well, few can boast the kind of interactive approach, combined with high traffic and a quality poker platform that GGPoker currently offers.

Regarding the integration, GGPoker posted the following Tweet, with a fitting reply coming right back from the team at GIPHY:

GIPHY is a GIF database that is used in a variety of apps that you may have used in the past, including the likes of Facebook, Instagram, and Viber.

The platform was founded in 2013 and in 2020, it was acquired in full by Facebook for a reported $400 million. Facebook was later ordered to divest the ownership of GIPHY due to concerns regarding monopoly practices, and the platform remained available through a massive variety of apps.

The integration into the GGPoker platform makes for an exciting addition for poker players who will now have yet another way to express their emotions and communicate with other players at their table.

Since the GIPHY library is so massive, there is nearly no end to the kind of GIFs one can find and display at the table in just seconds.

To use GIPHY, you will simply need to type in a keyword into the chatbox and pick one of the many GIFs from the options that appear below. Once selected, the GIF will appear on top of your name box for everyone at the table to see. It will also remain in the chatbox for future reference.

While this feature may not actually improve the gameplay itself, it gives players a chance to enjoy the overall experience even more and adds a fun spark to the competitive nature of the game.

For a long time now, GGPoker has been one of the leaders in the online poker industry, having become a serious competitor to the likes of PokerStars and partypoker.

The operator not only offers some of the biggest online poker tournaments in the world, but also a variety of valuable promotions and some of the best features found on any online poker platform.

In August 2020, GGPoker introduced its players to SnapCam videos, allowing players to record short 15 second videos of themselves, which could then be used to react to situations happening in the game. The operator soon after introduced dance emojis and animated GIFs as well. That earlier, more limited GIF library has now been upgraded to GIPHY for even more interactivity.

With all these amazing features and the kind of traffic GGPoker currently has, it is not hard to see why the site remains one of the top-rated online poker operators in iGaming today, with licenses in a number of valuable regions and markets.

Mars gives M&M’s a makeover to promote inclusivity – Long Island Business News

Posted: at 11:37 pm

Candy maker Mars is giving a makeover to its six M&Ms characters as a way to promote inclusivity.

The company said that it will provide a modern take on the appearances of the characters which Mars calls lentils and give them more nuanced personalities. The lentils, which are featured in red, green, orange, yellow, brown and blue, will also come in different shapes and sizes.

Some of the changes to the M&M characters include making two of them less stereotypically feminine. In the new version, the green M&M ditches the high-heeled boots in favor of sneakers and the brown candy no longer wears stilettos, opting instead for lower heels.

Our ambition is to upend the expected, break through barriers, and discover the little joys shared in everyday life. Imagine a world with less judgment & more connection & consistent laughter, the company said on its website.

Mars, whose brands also include Twix and Snickers, said that it will also put added emphasis on the ampersand in the M&Ms logo to demonstrate how the brand aims to bring people together.

The move toward inclusivity and embracing individual differences comes at a time when consumers are growing increasingly aware of how products are marketed to them. Mars is aware of this, having had to change the name of itsUncle Bensrice brand in 2020 due to criticism. Quaker OatsAunt Jemimabrand pancake mix and syrup part of PepsiCo rebranded last year because it said that Aunt Jemima was based on a racial stereotype.

But some marketers believe that Mars may be overthinking the marketing of its M&Ms.

Allen Adamson, co-founder of marketing consultancy Metaforce, says the move to overhaul the character of the M&Ms is a good idea but its just an example of how worried marketers are to offend consumers. And he believes this step is on the verge of potential overthink.

Marketing consultant Laura Ries agrees, though she praises Mars emphasis of the ampersand as a symbol of unity.

Theyre looking for some attention and trying to jump on the bandwagon of trying to be more inclusive, Ries said. I dont think there was an overall outcry of the overall sexualization of the M&M. Its just an M&M.

Purdue professor looks back to Perseverance’s first year on Mars – Newsbug.info

Posted: at 11:37 pm

WEST LAFAYETTE Almost one year into the Mars rover mission, accomplishing its goal is on the horizon for Purdue Universitys Briony Horgan and the Perseverance team.

Feb. 18 will mark one year since the rover landed on the red planet following a seven-month, 300-million-mile flight across space.

Horgan, associate professor of planetary science in the Purdue College of Sciences Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences, said anticipation is building as the team focuses on the mission goal: researching a now-dry large river delta.

When we chose the landing site, it was because of the delta; thats the reason were here, Horgan said. So, well be excited to finally get up close and study it.

Horgan has been involved with several aspects of this mission. She led mineralogy research using satellite data before landing, and her team produced one of the major results on the location that contributed to NASAs selection of Jezero Crater which once held a lake and the river delta as the landing site.

Well spend most of the next year on the delta, exploring this ancient lake and river environment and looking for signs of ancient life like organic material and signs of microbes, she said.

The mission is intended to last three years as the Mars rover collects rock and dust samples. Horgan said that after the three-year point, the hope is Perseverance will continue outside Jezero Crater for as long as possible.

Horgan is now the long-term planner as part of the science leadership for NASAs Perseverance Mars rover, helping guide the mission strategy and scientific investigations. She discusses the rover mission on an episode of the This Is Purdue podcast.

While the key objective for the rover is searching for signs of ancient microbial life by examining the planets geology, theres been a learning curve to the first year of work. Once the rover began to traverse the landscape, things were deliberate, with 12-15 hours of travel taking just as long to plan.

With the second year approaching, Horgan said the team is hoping to step away from that semi-autonomous travel.

With all the new technology on the rover, were working on how to drive on consecutive days and do longer and longer autonomous drives, she said. Then well make a beeline for the delta as fast as we can.

Horgan said the mission already has proved both fruitful and surprising with the Mars rock and atmosphere samples collected. A layered ridge spotted after landing was initially expected to be semimentary rock that could hold biosignatures from the planets past.

Closer inspection, Horgan said, found that it was an ancient lava flow, but one that could still provide answers with the sample drilled from it. The same rocks are believed to underlie the delta and can be eventually examined for dating.

By doing that, we can actually figure out when the delta was there and when there was water in the crater, Horgan said. Thats a really big question because we only have estimates for when we think Mars was wet and was habitable. We really dont know for sure.

Horgan said the mission remains on track and has already surpassed the work of the Mars rover Curiosity, which was launched in November 2011. Four unique rock and dust samples are expected to be collected by next months landing anniversary.

Its an incredibly ambitious mission, with goals that are leaps and bounds beyond any previous Mars rover and really any previous space mission had been supposed to do: how far and fast were supposed to drive, how many samples were supposed to drill , Horgan said. Were still learning a lot.

Chilly, damp Mars may have hosted an ancient ocean – Space.com

Posted: at 11:37 pm

A cold, wet Mars could have supported an ocean in the northern parts of the Red Planet three billion years ago, a new study finds.

New 3D climate simulations of the planet's ancient atmosphere and water suggest a liquid ocean once existed in the northern lowland basin of Mars. This ocean potentially persisted even when average global surface temperatures were below the freezing point of water, the peer-reviewed work suggests.

Although present-day Mars is cold and dry, decades of evidence suggests the ancient surface was covered with rivers, streams, ponds and lakes. Since water on Earth usually points to life, these old signs of water raise the possibility that the Red Planet was once home to life and might host it still.

Earth and Mars potentially had similar climates about three billion years ago, when life was spreading on our planet. However, scientists debate whether Mars was temperate enough then to host an ocean of water, a question that could strongly influence whether the Red Planet was habitable enough to support life. Indeed, NASA's Perseverance rover mission is one of many sent to Mars to assess the planet's suitability for hosting ancient life.

Related: Water on Mars: Exploration & evidence

The new findings in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, published Monday (Jan. 17), contradict previous research suggesting Mars could not support such an ocean three billion years ago.

Relatively few branching river valleys that date to that time on Mars, for example, suggesting a lack of intense and widespread rainfall expected from a warm and wet climate.

But not all evidence points to a dry world; other evidence of contemporary tsunami debris argues against a Martian climate that was too cold and dry for an ocean.

The new study suggests a liquid northern ocean was possible because ocean circulation patterns may have warmed up the surface of that region up to 40.1 degrees Fahrenheit (4.5 degrees Celsius), well above water's freezing point.

More water was potentially in ample supply, too. The northern ocean could have experienced moderate rainfall within it, as well as near its shorelines. Another potential source was flowing glaciers from the southern highlands of the Red Planet, which hosted ice sheets.

An ocean-friendly Martian atmosphere looks somewhat like the carbon dioxide-filled version we see today, but with a twist: roughly 10% of the atmosphere was made up of 10% hydrogen gas, potentially getting released by volcanoes, cosmic impacts or chemical interactions between water and rock. (Today, by contrast, hydrogen is only present in trace amounts.)

This atmosphere combination of carbon dioxide and hydrogen could have trapped enough heat from the sun to keep surface temperatures warm enough for an ocean of liquid water, the study suggests.

It remains uncertain, however, whether this ocean could have supported life. "We are only studying the conditions where life could appear," study lead author Frdric Schmidt, a planetary scientist at the University of Paris-Saclay, told Space.com. "A large standing body of water stable for a long time is important, probably necessary, but maybe not sufficient for life to appear."

Scientists are also unsure where the water went, Schmidt noted. Much of it could be frozen as ice under the surface of Mars, or chemically locked away in minerals. Solar radiation may have also broken water molecules apart into hydrogen and oxygen gas, with the hydrogen gas ultimately escaping into space, he added; NASA is tracking present-day Red Planet gas emissions through missions such as MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution Mission).

In the future, China's Zhurong rover (currently on Mars) along with the planned ExoMars Rosalind Franklin rover from the European Space Agency and Russia's Roscosmos could analyze the proposed boundary of this ancient ocean to confirm whether there was a shoreline and tsunami deposits there, the scientists said.

In the longer term, the proposed international Mars Ice Mapper mission could uncover additional signs of ancient seas on Mars, the team said. Future research may also explore what exact paths glaciers took to reach this ocean, to assist scientists in mapping geological evidence of glacial routes.

"For the moment, our simulation cannot predict that," Schmidt said.

Mysterious Purple-Coated Rocks Found All Over The Place On Mars – IFLScience

Posted: at 11:37 pm

Red may well be the predominant color associated with the, er, Red Planet, but its purple that Perseverance keeps finding on Mars. Purple-coated rocks to be exact. And they're everywhere.

The plucky Mars rover has found these purple rocks at almost every site it's explored in Jezero Crater so far, ranging from large rocks to tiny pebbles, and yet NASA scientists aren't quite sure what this purple coating is or how it formed.

"I don't really have a good answer for you,"geochemist Ann Ollila, who presented an early analysis of the mysterious purple coating at the recent American Geophysical Union (AGU) conference, told National Geographic.

The purple appears as both a thin, smooth coating on some rocks and paint-like splodges on others. Deciphering its chemical make-up may offer insights into Mars's ancient environment.

This isn't actually the first time purple rocks or even green rocks, for that matter have been found on Mars. Curiosity discovered some near the base of Mount Sharp back in 2016. At the time, NASA noted that the variation in colors on Mars rocks hints at diversity of composition, and the purple-hued pebbles had been found where Curiosity's Chemical and Mineralogy (CheMin) instrument had detected hematite, an iron oxide crystal.

It also helped that winds and windblown sand where Curiosity was exploring kept rocks dust-free, which might otherwise obscure the rocks' color.

The purple patches spotted by Perseverance have also been typically found in less dusty areas, according to another early analysis presented at the AGU conference, this time by a team, led by Bradley Garczynski of Purdue University, who are studying the coatings using images captured by Perseverance's "eye" cams, the Mastcam-Z cameras. They also may contain types of iron oxide, their findings suggest.

However,Garczynski told NatGeo we haven't seen this type of purple rock coating before, and certainly not in the frequency Perseverance seems to be coming across them.

Ollila's team has been using Perseverances' Supercam which can shoot a laser at rocks to vaporize them and study the rocks' properties to study the coating. Their early results seem to show the purple layer is softer and chemically distinct from the rock layer below, and maybe enriched in hydrogen and magnesium.

Hydrogen and iron oxide suggest water played a role in forming the purple patches.Perseverance has been exploring the Jezero Crater, a meteorite impact crater that once hosted an ancient lake, and there is plenty of evidence Mars once hosted water and was even a wet planet. However, the route Percy has been taking, and encountering these purple rocks, doesn't actually follow any lake sediments, but rather rocks that formed from cooling magma. So how these purple-hued rocks arrived at their location, and how or when they came into contact with water, remains a mystery.

Scientists have been looking into whether rock coatings found on Mars may help preserve evidence of ancient microbial life by preventing the Sun's intense radiation from degrading organic material. So chalk this new mystery up to potentially helping us discover the answer to theage-old question of whether there ever was, or could be, life on Mars.

‘The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill’: The abuses of a superstar pastor and megachurch ruins left behind – Here And Now

Posted: at 11:37 pm

"The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill" podcast tells a dramatic story about a controversial megachurch in Seattle and the charismatic pastor who built it.

The podcast is about fame, faith and power converging in Mark Driscoll one of the countrys first internet celebrity pastors. He built a church of more than 15,000 people.

As it turns out, the scandals that undermined the church are as compelling as a true-crime show. The story is told from inside the faith by the evangelical publication Christianity Today.

Part of Driscolls charisma came from his biting sense of humor. In one instance, Driscoll scolded men for not being good enough providers and protectors as he saw it to women and children. He doesnt care if a man buys a truck or plays video games, he argued, but its stupid to let those things dominate your life.

You work one part-time job so you could play more guitar. That's dumb. That's really, really dumb, Driscoll said. Some will say, Well it's not a sin. Neither is eating your lawnmower. It's just dumb.

Driscoll often told the story of growing up in a rough neighborhood in Seattle, reporter and host Mike Cosper says. Though he wasnt raised Christian, Driscoll joined the faith after meeting his wife Grace Driscoll, a pastors daughter.

By his early 20s, Driscoll started talking about founding a church despite that hed never been a member of one or received any seminary training, Cosper says.

He just had these instincts, Cosper says, particularly with how to connect to guys like him that he didn't think were interested in churches.

Driscolls charisma made him the star of Mars Hill Church. He wasnt accountable to any denominational hierarchy and could fire people at will.

In one instance, the churchs elders were asked to weigh in on a new governing document and a few of the men sent an email that raised concerns, Cosper says. In response, Driscoll walked off stage after giving a sermon and fired all of them the next day.

There is a pile of dead bodies behind the Mars Hill bus. By God's grace, it'll be a mountain by the time we're done, Driscoll said. Either get on the bus or you get run over by the bus, those are the options. But the bus ain't gonna stop.

One of the first stories told in the podcast was of an executive assistant who was fired for saying she hoped some of the older men in the church could confront Driscoll and help him mature, Cosper says.

Over the years, there were quite a few people who were either directly fired by him for what was often in his mind sort of insubordination, Cosper says, What was often in their mind just general confrontation.

The podcast showcases how Driscoll's teachings on masculinity were toxic for women. He would go into graphic detail about sexual submission.

Jen Smidt, a blogger for the Mars Hill website and wife of one of the pastors, was ostracized for supposedly grasping for power. In one meeting, Driscoll wouldn't speak directly to her.

He would not even look me in the eye and acknowledge my plea to him to have some sort of relational restoration, Smidt said on the podcast.

Smidt went on to explain that Driscoll turned to her husband and said, I reserve the right to speak to the heads of households, Cosper says.

On paper, Mars Hill was a cross between complementarianism where men and women have equal dignity but different roles in the home and at church and patriarchy, Cosper says. But in reality, the church was top-down and patriarchal.

Even when he would talk about sex and sexuality, the responsibility of wives was to please and care for their husbands sexually, Cosper says. Every other woman in the world was a temptress and a danger to men, and he would speak very graphically about that as well.

Many people on the podcast express that they cant believe how long they stayed with the church. Cosper compares it to why people stay in cults: community, friendships, relationships, family.

You'd roll your eyes at something Mark [Driscoll] said on Sunday, Cosper says. But you were actually there because of the experience of community.

From the outside, people wanted to align with the young and successful Driscoll because they agreed with him on biblical inerrancy, gender, salvation and spreading the gospel, Cosper says.

One pivotal moment in the fall of Mars Hill was when Driscoll got a book deal for Real Marriage: The Truth About Sex, Friendship, and Life Together.

As part of the marketing and promotion scheme for the book, they contracted with a company called Result Source, who has this elaborate method of gaming the New York Times bestseller list, Cosper says. So the whole thing cost about $250,000. And then about a year, year and a half later, it started to leak that it had happened.

Then in fall 2013, Driscoll did a radio interview with a woman named Janet Mefferd, who accused him of plagiarism, Cosper says. After that, several cases of plagiarism in his writing were exposed.

For the next nine months, nonstop coverage of the plagiarism and other controversies persisted, he says.

At some point, I think the church needs to have a reckoning with its relationship to power and weakness.

As the church folded, the people around Driscoll slowly left. And the dissenters became persona non grata when they left, like Jesse Bryan, who ran the media team for Mars Hill.

When you leave, you're dead, Bryan said. You're a dead person, not only inside of all of your community but also from a career standpoint, because now you worked for the Enron of churches.

After Driscoll left the church in 2014, he spent a year and a half making appearances at other churches across the West Coast and Southwest. People viewed him as a victim of angry, bitter staff members who were out to get him and gave him sympathy, Cosper says.

Driscoll maintained much of his online audience and relocated to Scottsdale, Arizona, where he started a new church and remains a pastor today, Cosper says.

At the same time, many former Mars Hill members in Seattle were so shattered by their experience they left Christianity altogether, while others found new churches. In the podcast, Diane Langberg, a Christian psychologist who works with trauma survivors and clergy, says that American Christians are forgetting to be like Christ and serve the least of these.

That's not what we've been doing. We've been garnering fame and numbers and money, she said. And it's ugly and it's divisive, and it's really not about Christ at all. And it breaks, breaks God's heart.

The story of Mars Hill speaks to a broader story about evangelical America and celebrity pastors. Part of Cospers interest in the story stemmed from that everything happened online.

But also a lot of us kind of agree that Mark said things very loudly that are said quietly in all kinds of churches related to power related to celebrity, Cosper says. At some point, I think the church needs to have a reckoning with its relationship to power and weakness.

Historically, the church has served the poor and the sick through sacrifice something places like Mars Hill invert by putting wealth in power in the hands of few individuals, Cosper says.

Driscoll didnt respond to the podcasts request for an interview but if he wanted to talk, Cosper says hed get on the next plane to Phoenix.

James Perkins Mastromarino produced and edited this interview for broadcast withTodd Mundt.Allison Haganadapted it for the web.
