Nominations for 3rd Global Poker Awards Announced – PocketFives
Posted: January 19, 2022 at 11:51 am
After two rounds of voting by both a voting panel consisting of poker industry insiders, poker media and fans alike, the nominations for the 3rd Global Poker Awards have been finalized. The ceremony, which takes place at the PokerGO Studio in Las Vegas on Friday, February 18, will hand out 26 awards in a variety of categories, including three Peoples Choice awards determined solely by the fans.
The field of finalist includes plenty of pokers biggest stars including Doug Polk, Michael Addamo, Ali Imsirovic, Daniel Cates, Lex Veldhuis, and Brad Owen. Polk also leads the list of those with multiple nominations, a select group that features Imsirovic, Cates, Jeff Platt, Joe Stapleton, Jamie Kerstetter, and Johan YoH ViraL Guilbert.
Three of the winners have previously been announced with Imsirovic earning the 2021 GPI Player of the Year Awards, Nadya Magnus taking home the 2021 Female Player of the Year Awards, and David Mzareulov claiming the inaugural 2021 Mid-Major Player of the Year awards.
And the 2021 GPA nominees are
As usual, the World Series of Poker had an incredible impact on the poker world this year with some of the most gripping moments coming out of the series. Aldemirs domination of the WSOP Main Event, Cates epic comeback from on big blind in the $50K PPC, and Friedmans back-to-back-to-back $10K Dealers Choice titles are all history-making performances.
Four of the toughest high-roller players on the planet make this an intimidating category. Chidwick won this award at the last awards, Imsirovic is the 2021 GPI Player of the Year and PokerGO Tour 2021 Player of the Year, and David Peters is the 2021 U.S. Poker Open champ and sits fifth on the Hendon Mobs All-Time Money List.
That said, no one really came close to Michael Addamo in 2021 and all eyes will be on him as the favorite.
The poker world is in a golden era of online streaming where not only can someone learn the game quickly and cheaper than ever, but can become a part of a community helmed by one of their favorite poker personalities. The strength of these nominations is only bolstered by a long list of quality streamers who are not included.
The Wynn showing up twice on this list is a nod to how the Las Vegas poker room took a giant leap forward this year in stepping up for the tournament community in the face of the pandemic. But know that the Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood, Florida has also been making waves when it comes to must-play events. In order to win, one of them will have to usurp the event that many, year-in and year-out, capture the hearts of poker players from all over the world the WSOP Main Event.
Another cant miss category with Kerstetter as the emerging voice on the WSOP broadcast, Jeff Platt shining as the WSOPs sideline reporter, and commentary vets Ali Nejad and Joe Stapleton consistently delivering the goods whenever they are on the air.
Read all of the nominated stories including and especially Lance Bradleys piece on PokerStars founder Isai Scheinberg for PocketFives at the links above. (Except for Rabins piece which is behind a paywall.)
Watch all of the nominated videos at the links above.
There were a number of amazing hands captured live this year and which of the above (which you can view) you enjoy the most depends on if you like pleasure or pain. For those who enjoy being the hero, Polks hero fold and Rigbys bluff are the stuff poker dreams of are made of. On the opposite side, the pain inflicted on Leng and Chang Liu, is some of the most memorable of the year.
Fans have until Wednesday, January 26th to vote for their favorite Poker Personality, even if they voted in the first round.

Egg Ride Then Poker Run To Benefit Pine Tree Camp Feb 5th – q1065.fm
Posted: at 11:51 am
Heres the definition of a Poker Run from Wikipedia.
Apoker runis an organized event in which participants, usually using motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles, boats, snowmobiles, horses, on foot or other means of transportation, must visit five to seven checkpoints, drawing aplaying card at each one. The object is to have the best poker handat the end of the run. Having the best hand and winning is purely a matter of chance. The event has a time limit, however the individual participants are not timed.
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the record for the largest event was set in 2009 with 2,136 motorcyclists benefiting the Fallen Firefighter Survivors Foundation (FFSF).
If a Poker run is something you would like to try, there will be a Poker Run to benefit the Pine Tree Camp.
And it will be held on the afternoon of The Q106.5 Egg Ride. Saturday, February 5.
Q-106.5 archives
The Pine Tree Camp Poker Run will start at Dysarts Truck Stop and Restaurant in Hermon, just like the Egg Ride. Egg Ride begins at 10:30 AM. Well be back at Dysarts for lunch.
At 1PM, the poker run begins. On your snowmobile or in your car. The Poker Run ends at 3:30 PM.
All the money raised goes towards Pine Tree Camps open-door policy. No camper is turned away regardless of their ability to pay the tuition.
Plan to make it a full day, with the 36th Egg Ride in the morning and the 1st Poker Run in the afternoon. And feel good about the funds raised that evening and may the good feeling last.
Everyone needs a little pick-me-up during the long Maine winter, so here are some suggestions of activities that might help make the cold weather and short days a little more bearable.

6 Celebrities Who Love to Play Poker – CelebMix
Posted: at 11:51 am
Are you the type who loves a good game of poker? Is it your casino game of choice whether you visit a brick-and-mortar casino or an online casino? Poker is not only a popular game for people to play, but its also popular to watch. Televised tournaments typically draw in huge audiences, and when possible, they also draw in live crowds to watch the action.
While there are plenty of professional poker players on the tournament circuit, what you may not know is that there are also celebrities who have created quite the name for themselves in the world of poker. Heres a look at six celebrities who are known to love playing poker.
Its hard to imagine Kevin Hart as anything but the comedian, but it seems he has a knack for poker. Not only does he enjoy playing poker, but it also seems hes pretty good at it and has won various amounts. He has even taken part in the High Rollers on the world circuit level.
Hart is of course known as a very successful actor who has appeared and starred in such movies as Get Hard, Central Intelligence, The Secret Life of Pets (1 and 2), Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, Jumanji (1 and 2), The Upside, Night School and more. He is also a popular stand-up comedian.
Perhaps best known for his foray as Spiderman (2002-2007, three movies), Tobey Maguire is a well-known successful actor. He has starred in a wide array of movies, taking on a variety of challenging roles. But it seems as though Maguire also likes to enjoy his free time and often includes poker as his activity of choice.
Maguire has been playing poker since he was just 15 years old, so hes gotten pretty good at the game, it seems. He has taken part in several online and live events and watching him is quite exciting as he has built a very tough-to-read demeanour, making him an excellent player. With that said, there are some rumours that he can be difficult to play with and doesnt take well to losing.
Another well-known player on the circuit is Matt Damon. It is rumoured that Damon became interested in poker while researching his role in Rounders. Rounders was released in 1998 and starred Edward Norton, who also took a liking to the game for the same reasons. The movie focused on the high-stakes world of underground poker, so it was only natural that Damon should learn the ins and outs.
Since then, he has kept up with playing and he has built an excellent reputation, not just as a good player, but he is often referred to as a gracious player that others enjoy being around. The classic likeable guy.
You cant mention Matt Damon without also mentioning his bestie Ben Affleck. Afflecks love of poker and gambling, in general, is no secret. He is one of the more obvious celebrities when it comes to his love of the game. He has played in many different cash poker tournaments, and hes made his rounds in the World Series of Poker, appearing more than once.
While he may not be as sleek as some of the professional players out there, he is still a very good player. He is also known throughout the circuit as being a very genuine and nice guy to be around. People want to hang out with him and enjoy a round of poker. Affleck is also said to love the game of blackjack and is rumoured to be better at blackjack than poker.
Its not just the guys who have a liking for poker; Jennifer Tilly has also carved out a spot for herself as a very formable player. Diehard poker fans may only know Tilly as a player and may not even realise she is a celebrity actress. As far as her poker stats go, Tilly has reportedly won almost $1 million (total wins), has a WPT (World Poker Tour) win and a WSOP (World Series of Poker) bracelet.
Just like with Damon, it was research for an acting role that got her interested in the game and since then she has stuck with it. Today its more common to find her at the poker table than in a studio, as it seems poker has captured her heart.
Another female celebrity who has made a name for herself in the world of poker is Shannon Elizabeth. Best known for her role in the American Pie film, Elizabeth has appeared in several championships and games. However, it seems as though, in the past decade, her love of poker has slowed, at least in terms of live and online events.
What if you want to play like a celebrity and build your skills in the game of poker? Although you may not have the same resources as A-listers, you can learn all the same. Its a matter of practice and researching the game as much as possible. You dont even have to visit the casino to practice and learn thanks to the many online casinos you can enjoy from the comfort of your home.
You can visit a site like http://www.onlinecasinos.co.uk to get information on the top UK casinos worth checking out. The site outlines the welcome bonus at each of the top casinos and gives it a score and rating so you know where to spend your time and money.
Just like with any new hobby, game or skill, practice makes perfect. Anytime you can fit in a quick game or two, it will add to your level of skill and knowledge.
Whats cool about the many celebrities that play poker is that it shows they are just like everyone else. They enjoy gaming in their free time, look at it as a fun activity and probably a way to de-stress and wind down, and many of them have become quite good at the game.

Over $200 Million Paid Out Across the Two Winter Series on PokerStars and GGPoker – Pokerfuse
Posted: at 11:51 am
The two biggest brands in the global online poker industry locked horns once again as PokerStars and GGPoker held Winter-themed tournament series in the last two months. With both competitions in the virtual poker arena now concluded, the final figures reveal that more than $208 million in combined prize money was awarded.
GGPoker topped the market leader by more than two to one in terms of overall prize pools, but also hosted four times as many tournaments. Likewise, the duration of the second-ever WSOP Winter Online Circuit on the rising online poker giant was far longer than PokerStars Winter Series. Both brands comfortably surpassed their overall series guarantees along the way, kicking off the new year in style.
While featuring far fewer tournaments, the Winter Series on PokerStars attracted more than 1.4 million entries (443,837 of which were re-entries) and awarded over $61 million in prize money.
Its counterpart on the GGPoker network remained just below the seven-figure mark but eclipsed the 558,005 total entrants of the inaugural edition while featuring a lower average buy-in. It eventually paid out $146 million over thousand of tournaments.
A closer look at the overall numbers will be satisfying for both fierce contenders of the online poker throne.

OLG POKER LOTTO hand-created Christmas magic and financed a reno for Richard Sheppard – National Post

It took weeks for him to check his tickets but is he ever glad he did
Author of the article:
Publishing date:
Richard Sheppard, 47, is a Canadian Armed Forces veteran who likes to spend Friday nights in Elmira, Ont. playing a few lines of OLGs Watch N Win POKER LOTTO game and later smoking a fine cigar with his buddies. On one of those evenings in November 2018, he didnt collect an instant win prize but he still had a chance to win up to $100,000 on the nightly draw.

That night I dropped all of the tickets on the nightstand when I got home, he recalls. The next morning at 4 a.m., we were flying out to the Dominican for a vacation, so I didnt check them. We were gone for a week and after I got home they sat there for another two weeks.
We apologize, but this video has failed to load.
With Christmas approaching, Sheppard was heading out to buy a Christmas gift for his fiance when he decided to check his lottery tickets, to see if he had any winners.
At the mall, I ran them through the ticket checker and won some Free Plays, but when I got to the POKER LOTTO tickets, one of them came up as a Big Winner, he recalls. I thought it said $1,000 and my first thought was right on. But when I looked at the screen again, I noticed the extra zeroes, which meant I had matched all five cards in the draw and that this was a $100,000 prize ticket.

I thought it said $1,000 and my first thought was right on, Sheppard says. But when I looked at the screen again, I noticed the extra zeroes.
Sheppard took photos of the ticket and ticket checker screen with his phone and sent them to his brother. He then drove to see his fiance at her office a few minutes away and asked her to scan the ticket on her phone with the OLG Lottery App.
When she heard the winning music she screamed out loud that it was a $100,000 prize, Sheppard says. Everybody in the office heard her and they got excited, too. The next night we booked a hotel in Toronto so we could visit the OLG Prize Centre the following morning. By noon, I left with a massive cheque to deposit.
The bank tellers in Elmira joked that he must have won the lottery. He admitted that he actually had won the lottery and inspired some additional excitement at the branch.
Sheppard volunteers each year to play Santa Claus on board the Polar Express, a train ride event along the Waterloo Central Railway. He also played a very generous Santa at his household that year.

Christmas was amazing, he says. I have two kids and my fiance has two, and there were great presents all around for them and their girlfriends. I also paid off all my bills. Other than my mortgage, I was debt-free.
Sheppard also had a 10-year plan for renovating his house that was quickly accelerated to mere months.
I installed a hot tub, replaced all major appliances, and put a new floor and granite countertops in the kitchen, he says. My fiance and I spent a week in Orlando, and I still had money left over to put into savings.
Sheppard still maintains the tradition of playing OLGs POKER LOTTO Watch N Win game on Friday nights.
The big prize can be won by anyone, he says.

Chris Eubank Jr signs a microwave for a fan
Chris Eubank Jr has boasted of his poker successes against retired fighters David Haye and Carl Froch.
The British star has been an avid player of the sport, competing in online tournaments and cash games alongside his boxing career.
And he is confident he is the cream of the crop among the fighting fraternity.
I played with Ryan Garcia in Vegas not too long ago, he was pretty good, still green but he did pretty well," Eubank Jr told Mirror Fighting after being named as ambassador for 888 Poker.
"David Haye I have played with him a bunch and I played in a charity tournament against Carl Froch.
There is always that extra bit of competition and we as fighters underestimate it as all we do is punch people for a living. A lot of guys will try to bluff me a lot and make moves on me as they underestimate me and dont think I will be that good.
Image:
Aside from being a far superior player to both David Haye and Carl Froch it is fresh and I think I am a great fit so I want to get out there and show what I am made of.
I like being under-estimated as it makes me play better the same as in boxing. All-action is the best way to describe my style in poker and the ring.
The plan is to travel to places and play in big poker tournaments and it is something I am really looking forward to."
Eubank Jr has now been named as an ambassador for 888 Poker as he looks to continue promotion of the sport.
The British star will immediately switch focus back to his upcoming domestic match-up against Liam Williams in Wales on February 5.
After boxing was shut down for January in the UK as uncertainty continues around the coronavirus pandemic, the date was rescheduled for the new event with fans hoping to be in attendance.
Who will win next month? Chris Eubank Jr or Liam Williams? Let us know your prediction in the comments section below.
Williams and Eubank Jr have exchanged on social media frequently in the build-up to this event with high stakes as the winner plans to move on to a world title shot.
It was a frustrating 2021 for Eubank Jr who only entered the ring once after his signature with new promoter BOXXER.
But the British star is confident of securing a huge victory and setting alight his middleweight ambitions.

We Found the One Group of Americans Who Are Most Likely to Spread Fake News – POLITICO

To be clear, existing research has found that conservatives have a greater tendency toward misinformation than liberals do. For example, during the 2016 election, individuals who leaned conservative were more likely to engage with and share disinformation on Twitter and Facebook. Likewise, in the early months of the pandemic, conservatives were more likely to believe Covid-19 was a hoax, and to downplay the virus severity.
However, given that conservatism historically has been associated with respect for tradition, authority and social institutions, we reasoned that ideology alone might not explain the spread of fake news. We decided to investigate the role personality traits might play, focusing our research on conscientiousness the tendency to regulate ones own behavior by being less impulsive and more orderly, diligent and prudent. Our presumption was that conservatives with lower levels of conscientiousness would be more inclined to spread fake news, and that there would be no difference between highly conscientious conservatives and their liberal counterparts.
We tested these hypotheses across eight experimental studies with a sample size of more than 4,600 participants in total. In each study, participants reported their political ideology and responded to several questions evaluating their tendency toward conscientious on a five-point scale. They then were exposed to a series of fake and real news headlines a mix of neutral, conservative or liberal-leaning in their news content and asked to indicate their willingness to share those news stories with other people.
We found that low-conscientiousness liberals, high-conscientiousness liberals and high-conscientiousness conservatives each expressed willingness to share fake news articles to a similar relatively small degree. LCCs stood out: On average, they were 2.5 times more likely to share misinformation than the combined averages of the other three groups. In other words, it was the combination of conservatism and low conscientiousness that resulted in the greatest likelihood to share misinformation.
We also wanted to understand what, exactly, drives LCCs to spread misinformation. So, in one of the studies, we asked participants to report their leanings on a range of potential influences: level of support for Trump, time spent on social media, distrust of the mainstream media, and endorsement of conservative social and economic values. To our surprise, none of these factors was a reliable predictor of LCCs elevated tendency to share false news stories.
Instead, using statistical analysis, we found that the only reliable explanation was a general desire for chaos that is, a motivation to disregard, disrupt, and take down existing social and political institutions as a means of asserting the dominance and superiority of ones own group. Participants indicated their appetite for chaos by using a scale to express how much they agreed with statements like, I think society should be burned to the ground. For LCCs, we concluded, sharing false information is a vehicle for propagating chaos.
Can LCCs be prevented from sharing falsities? One of the most common measures for combating misinformation is using accurate messaging or fact-checker interventions, which have been shown to reduce the sharing of misinformation. Unfortunately, in two studies, we found that fact-checking warnings were inadequate: LCCs continued to share fake news stories at a higher rate compared with liberals and high-conscientiousness conservatives, despite being told the news was inaccurate.
This is a concerning finding. At the same time, our research overall suggests a path forward. First, those seeking to combat false information online can now target their interventions toward a smaller subset of the population: LCCs. More targeted approaches have been shown to be effective in influencing individual behavior in the past.
Second, our research makes clear that anyone trying to reach LCCs needs to experiment with interventions that go beyond fact-checking. We believe the onus falls primarily on social media companies. There is plenty of evidence that a users personality and political ideology can be inferred based on their social media activity. If these companies can identify LCCs, that means they can also be proactive in making sure LCCs are presented with reliable information, and not with falsities.
Misinformation is a serious threat to American democracy that deserves serious attention. But we should be smart about how we go about combating the spread of fake news stories. While our research doesnt provide all the answers, it can help to narrow the focus of these efforts and, in the process, should divert blame away from those conservatives who arent sharing misinformation.

Fake news of the week: The Berlin power cut – EXBERLINER.com
Posted: at 11:50 am
Each week, in a partnership with Correctiv, Exberliner will bring some piece of fake news that has been circulating online - and the corresponding fact check.
For our first, we have some online misinformation about the power outage which hit on January 9 in East Berlin.
So what happened? It is true that a massive power cut left around 50,000 houses without electricity and hot water for 16 hours, starting on Sunday Jan 9, lasting through the night and into Monday - while temperatures outside were just 3 degrees.
However, shortly after news of this power outage spread, misinformation began to spread online, much of it seeking to blame the outages on a single cause: the closure of Germanys nuclear power plants and the move towards green energy.
Take this indicative tweet from Frank L which reads:
Power outages are increasing in Germany ... the beginning of a completely wrong energy policy. Which party understands this?
The reference point for these remarks is the closure of three nuclear power plants which were taken offline on New Year's Eve, representing half of Germanys nuclear energy production. The inference drawn by much of the online misinformation is that a move towards green energy and the closing of nuclear power plants is likely to cause chaos acrossGermanys power grid.
However, according to Correctivs investigations, in none of the power outages, either on January 9 or in other power outages around that time (in Hamburg on January 7, or the Hochtaunuskreis on January 8) did the lack of electricity play a role. All of the power cuts were due either to bad weather conditions or technical problems like outdated equipment.
But this hasnt stopped the fake news spreading. On January 9, Steffan Kotr, member of the Bundestag for the AfD, wrote that we should fear an increase in such incidents, again implying the cause was the planned transition to green energy. He did not provide any evidence for this.
Despite the noise online, there is no sign that a green energy transition will lead to more blackouts, and the number of power faults has fallen in the period from 2006 to 2020.
In other fake news this week: were sorry to report that no, Bill Gates and Boris Johnson will not be charged at the International Criminal Court. Fingers crossed fornext time.
