A man holding a tenor saxophone stood in front of an excited and anxious small crowd. He felt the anticipation of the other musicians who were by his side electrify his nerves. The music began playing, and from the moment he lifted the wooden reed to his mouth, he was lost in the rhythm.

From playing piano at only three years old to jamming out in big house shows with several bands, Kevin King, recent graduate of FAA and a member of the band The Data Waves, is a musical protge.

I play saxophone obviously, I also play oboe, clarinet, flute, he said. I play like the whole entire woodwind family.

King explained that initially, he had a hard time maneuvering across the keys. But when he started playing saxophone at the age of six, everything changed for him. His love and appreciation of music blossomed.

Saxophone is really what bred my love for music; the rest is history, King said. So now, I just play music every day, you know, and cant stop.

He also explained that his musical ability does not necessarily come from his family. They do not consist of many musically inclined individuals. However, his household played a lot of music that influenced him to join the art.

They played a lot of different kinds of, what I call, Black-American music, King said. Hip-hop, gospel, funk, rock; all types of music. I remember listening to Curtis Mayfield and Aretha Franklin.

He added that he did not really get exposed to jazz music until he picked up the saxophone and began taking lessons. He also attributes much of his love and passion for music and the saxophone to the values his teacher instilled in him.

The person that introduced me to jazz music is this woman named Diane Ellis, he said. Shes still around, but she had a stroke. She was my first saxophone teacher.

He also emphasized the fact that he didnt perfect the saxophone overnight. His current success came from many years of practice.

King describes who he was in high school as being equal parts athlete and musician. However, after joining a jazz scholars program, he became an all-parts musician.

I was learning how to be a professional, you know, really make money with it and really take my musical ability to the next level, he said.

When it was time to pick an area to major in at the University, King considered his love for jazz and his musical talent. With that, he decided to major in jazz studies.

However, King explained that being in the academic program was not the most influential part of being in college but rather the experience he got working with other creatives.

My teachers very much helped me, he said. But the academic program didnt necessarily make me better. Just playing house shows, like every weekend. That gave me so much experience.

King joined The Data Waves when he was a freshman. He began translating his love for music into performances.

I wasnt an original member, he said. They (original members) were a band called The Apothecaries. Ive learned so much from being in that group.

Shravan Raghuram, recent graduate of the College of Business and the drummer of The Data Waves, described his relationship with King as a unique bond; the two were never short of compliments for each other. He also commented on Kings musical ability.

There is nobody I would rather share a stage or a recording session with, Raghuram said.

He also commented on Kings musical ability.

His ability as a musician goes without saying, he said. Hes always been the most dedicated and passionate musician I know. Watching him practice and gig and train for 10+ hours a day is a level of commitment I had never seen before. He makes everyone around him better in every sense of the word.

Joey Parker, another alumnus in FAA and keyboard player for The Data Waves, said King changed his life when he was at his lowest.

Even at the worst of my depression, Kevin remained an optimistic force and was so encouraging despite my difficulties, he said. No matter what, Kevin always prioritizes kindness above all else although music is a close second.

The current member, bassist Aditya Kashyap, agreed with Parker.

Kevin has a serious work ethic but such a goofy personality, he never fails to make me laugh, he said. I think that though Kevin has been playing for a long time and in many different musical settings, he still appreciates the opportunity to play with us.

Kevins personality is as loud as his playing, Parker said.

The North American Hockey League (NAHL) today announced the Divisional Stars of the Week presented by Bauer Hockey for the week ending January 16, 2022. The Divisional Stars of the Week is a weekly feature during the 2021-22 regular season that honors the top performing players in each of the four NAHL divisions. Only players that are nominated by their respective teams are considered for the Divisional Players of the Week award.

Central Division Star of the Week: Jake McLean, Forward, Bismarck Bobcats

McLean, 19, had a big weekend for the Bobcats as they picked up a sweep of a home-and-home series against the Aberdeen Wings. The 61/175 lbs. native of North Vancouver, BC, had four points in the two wins, which included 3 goals and an assist and a +4 rating. On Friday, McLean had two goals and an assist in a 5-2 road win, and then on Saturday, he had a goal in a 4-1 win. For the season, McLean currently leads the Bobcats in scoring with 30 points in 34 games played. Jake has been our most consistent player all year for us. He is an all-around 200-foot player and gets rewarded almost every night for it, and it's going to make him a very effective college player as well, said Bobcats head coach Layne Sedevie.

Titans forward Chris Carroll, 20, helped his club widen their lead in the East Division with a weekend home sweep of the Maine Nordiques. The 511/180 lbs. native of Islip, NY had four points (1 goal, 3 assists) in the two wins. On Friday, Carroll had two assists in a 3-1 win. On Saturday, he picked up a goal and an assist in a 3-0 win. For the season, Carroll is 3rd in team scoring with 39 points in 33 NAHL games played this season. Chris has been a consistent force for our club since being acquired shortly before Thanksgiving. He is a talented 200-foot hockey player, who had added veteran leadership to the dressing room as well. This past weekend he was able to contribute some big time points for us in two big home wins vs Maine. We look forward to Chris continuing his strong play as we continue to chase the Robertson Cup Playoffs, said Titans head coach Craig Doremus.

On Friday, the 62/192 lbs. native of Bjorklinge, Sweden had two goals, including the game-winner, and an assist in a 6-3 win. On Saturday, he had another goal and an assist in a 5-4 road win. For the season, Persson is 2nd in team scoring with 33 points in 30 games played to date. William is one of the most talented players in the league. His size strength and skill level are as good as we have ever had in our program. We are excited to see William get recognized for the outstanding play last weekend, said Wilderness head coach Dave Boitz.

New Mexico goalie Beni Halasz, 20, kept his MVP-caliber season going this past weekend, leading the 1st place Ice Wolves to a pair of wins in Amarillo against the Wranglers. The 60/180 lbs. native of Budapest, Hungary, faced 65 shots on the weekend and allowed just one goal in each game, making 63 total saves. On Friday, Halasz made 34 saves in a 4-1 win. On Saturday, he made 29 saves in a 3-1 win. Halasz currently leads the NAHL in goals against average with a 1.98 mark and he is tied for 2nd in save percentage (.929) and wins (17). Beni was huge for us last weekend. He made some big time saves at some big-time moments of the games. Hes been our rock all year and were happy to see him get recognized for his contributions, said Ice Wolves head coach Phil Fox.

Let me be clear: I am not a fan of the professional wrestling character John Cena. As a person, he's great. He has granted over 650 wishes for children with life-threatening illnesses through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which is the most in the organization's history. He donated $1 million to Black Lives Matter as part of BTS' #MatchAMillion initiative. Then there's his "We Are America" PSA for the Ad Council, the "Rise Above Hate" anti-bullying campaign, his work with breast cancer survivors through Susan G. Komen, and much, much more. Seriously, he's a great dude. He's also a great reality TV personality thanks to "Total Divas" and "Total Bellas," but that's another conversation for another time.

I'm also not denying the fact that Cena has been a cultural ambassador for professional wrestling in the wider scope of pop culture. Just like Hulk Hogan, The Rock, and "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, people outside of wrestling have been drawn in because of Cena's appearances outside of the ring. He's definitely earned his future WWE Hall of Fame induction for all of those reasons and more.

But I don't like John Cena as a wrestler for the same reasons that I didn't like Hogan (aside from the unapologetic racism) or DC Comics' Big Blue Boy Scout, Superman: After years and years of being the top guy, these characters are unstoppable and you never believe for a second that they're going to lose. For the most part, they never fail and they never change.

Whether it's saying your prayers and taking your vitamins, standing for truth, justice, and the American Way, or preaching hustle, loyalty, and respect, it's all just so boring. And it's not just for the present day me, the writer and critic that professionally analyzes media. Childhood me wasn't having it either. Watching these types of characters becomes a chore because they're not flawed, which makes them unrelatable. Ted Lasso and Captain America can be seen as a squeaky clean baby-faces too, but both of them are also complex characters with their own flaws that they're working through. They're not the pinnacle of perfection. On the other hand, Cena is now a 16-time World Champion. We didn't need to see him win that many titles because the story rarely changes, yet we've gotten it again and again and again. Unfortunately, this kind repetition has even been applied to superstars beyond Cena at this point. Vince McMahon picks his guys and girls, decides that they're the heroes of the story, and shoves them down the audience's throats whether they like them or not. That's just what WWE has become these days.
