WayRay Holograktor Concept First Look: Augmented Reality Car for the Metaverse – Motor Trend

The Facebook/Meta transformation has us all scrambling to understand the "metaverse," and how it might include/involve/affect vehicles. Well, this WayRay Holograktor concept car is pitched as the first car designed for the metaverse; more specifically, to allow occupants to experience the metaverse in motion without wearing clumsy goggles. Behold the augmented reality car, its interior reimagined as a giant Oculus headset. And lest you fret about distraction, everybody onboard can be a passenger, thanks to another novel concept: 5G remote driving.

The key party trick Swiss supplier WayRay is presenting here is its Deep Reality Display technology. Think of it as a head-up display on mega-steroids. DRD is comprised of four main elements: There's a compact laser unit capable of sending red, green, and blue light beams into a picture-generating unit (PGU) that incorporates a new type of optical transmitting system capable of projecting an image four times the size of today's biggest HUD images25 degrees wide by 8 degrees high, as measured from the viewer's eye.

Together, these components consume just 3 liters of spacedown from the 20 liters required by those biggest, brightest HUDs. When this laser light hits a special diffractive Holographic Optical Elementa photopolymer layer laminated into the windshield and side glassa holographic image is selectively reflected into the viewer's eyes. And unlike with systems that rely on reflecting a fraction of the generated light back to the viewer's eyes, these holographic images are not constrained to a fixed distance in front of the viewer. They can appear at any distance, they're not washed out by sunlight, and they appear much brighter (its luminance measures 12,000 candelas per square meter). The laminated material covers the entire glass, so the images can be projected anywhere, and the scrap rate in manufacturing is expected to be considerably less than with wedge films.

The fourth element is WayRay's AR Rendering Engine, which processes data from sensors, cameras, and map info to precisely overlay the holographic imagery onto and around the actual scenery that's visible out the windows.

Four laser/PGU units are required to render a 180-degree field of viewtwo fit in the dash and two for the side windows are located in the ceiling (this explains the appendage on the roof, which WayRay calls "the Shrimp"). The rendering engine continuously adjusts brightness to suit ambient light conditions. Power consumption is less than 50 watts. And while this 180-degree view system would obviously cost way more than a typical HUD, the price of a smaller display covering only the driver's field of view is expected to fall to near parity with today's systems.

5G Remote Driving Leverages Autonomy Sensor Suite

One of WayRay's big ideas is to pitch the Holograktor as a ride-hailing vehicle in which rides are subsidized by holographic advertising pitched at the passengers. This could be done to some extent with a live driver in the left front seat, but the experience could be more immersive (distracting) and "meta" if nobody onboard had to worry about driving. The idea here is to leverage the full suite of autonomy sensors and send that data to a remote driver via a robust, low latency 5G or satellite internet communications link. Such a driver would likely be sitting in a gaming-style cockpit (perhaps anywhere in the world) with 180-degree screens depicting the Holograktor's immediate surroundings. The car would largely drive itself, but with the remote driver constantly monitoring conditions and always ready to make a judgment call in one of those "edge cases" that are proving so difficult to program computers to handle.

The Four-Door Three-Seat Hatchback

The WayRay Holograktor's interior and exterior design were penned by Sasha Selipanov, whose design credits include work on the Lamborghini Huracn, the Genesis Essentia concept, the Bugatti Chiron, and the Koenigsegg Gemera. For this project, Selipanov and WayRay founder Vitaly Ponomarev aimed for "Russian constructivism form language," with triangular forms evocative of prisms. "It is a light-ray aesthetic that comes with the triangularity and the prism-like effect, which is just perfectly appropriate for a car built to highlight holography," adds Selipanov.

While the general hatchback shape is vaguely reminiscent of a Hyundai Ioniq 5, its proportions are unique. It's the length of a Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class SUV, but it's as wide as a Chrysler Pacifica minivan. This allows the front seats to be separated by almost 20 inches to afford the central rear "throne" occupant an unobstructed view of the virtual metaverse being holographically rendered out the windshield.

Note that the front doors open up and forward, butterfly style, while the rear-hinged rear doors open back and down, taking part of the roof with them to make it easier to walk in to that central rear seat. Another reason for the single rear seat is data suggesting 80 percent of Uber rides carry one person only.

Few mechanical details of the Holograktor have been shared, except that a single electric motor will propel it from 0 to 62 mph in 3.9 seconds, and its battery will provide 375 miles of range. There are no firm numbers yet for power, torque, or battery capacity.

What's Next for Holograktor?

Having made its debut at the IAA auto show in Munich in September, WayRay is now using the Holograktor concept to showcase its Deep Reality Display technology to prospective automakers, but founder Ponomarev notes that the car has been engineered and designed to be production feasible. We're not holding our breath for that happening, but we wouldn't be surprised to find virtual Holograktors for sale in the metaverse. Start saving your Bitcoin and Ethereum.

Elon Musk called Elizabeth Warren Senator Karen and said she reminded him of an angry Mom on Tuesday after the Massachusetts Senator said the Tesla CEO should pay more in taxes.

Lets change the rigged tax code so The Person of the Year will actually pay taxes and stop freeloading off everyone else, Warren tweeted with a link to a story about Musk being named Time Magazines 2021 person of the year.

Stop projecting! Musk replied with a link to a Fox News opinion article arguing that the Massachusetts Democrat lied about having Native American heritage in order to benefit from affirmative action polices.

You remind me of when I was a kid and my friends angry Mom would just randomly yell at everyone for no reason, Musk added.

The spat comes as Warren and other DC Democrats mull wealth taxes and other measures that could potentially put Musk, Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg on the hook for billions of dollars by taxing their unrealized gains.

Musk who is the worlds wealthiest man with a net worth of $252 billion, according to Forbes has routinely hit progressive politicians with crude insults on Twitter.

In November, Oregon Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden reiterated his support for a wealth tax for billionaires on Twitter.

Why does ur pp look like u just came? responded Musk in apparent reference to the senators profile photo.

Musk also attacked Sen. Bernie Sanders that same month after the Vermont independent expressed support for raising taxes on billionaires.

I keep forgetting that youre still alive,replied Musk.

Want me to sell more stock, Bernie? Just say the word the mogul added in reference to the billions of dollars of Tesla shares he has sold this year to cover tax bills.

There is no disputing that Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos are among the wealthiest people on the planet. However, because the personal fortunes of these two self-made billionaires are dependent on their stakes in their companies and other investments, their net worths can rise and fall with the stock market. However, here's what we know about who the richest person in the world is, as of December 2021.

Although Forbes named Jeff Bezos as the richest person in the world in October 2021 with an estimated net worth of $177 billion, by December 2021, just two months later, Elon Musk had surged ahead. Forbes estimated that the Tesla CEO had added another $110 billion to his personal wealth at the end of 2021, due to several factors, including increases in Tesla's stock price and SpaceX's valuation. This now makes Musk, not Bezos, the current richest person in the world, with a net worth that's thought to be somewhere around $266 billion.

While he might have been recently booted out of the top spot by Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos is currently the second-richest person in the world by several outlets' calculations. His personal net worth at the end of 2021 is thought to be around the $196 billion mark not too shabby for someone who stepped down from his role as Amazon CEO in July 2021 after 27 years of leading the company.

For a brief period of time in 2021, French businessman Bernard Arnault reportedly made the leap to the second-richest person position, and even had a few weeks in the number one position, before dropping back down to number three.

Elon Musk in flashback mode, recalls he came to the US with no money and graduated with over $100K debt – Economic Times

Elon Musk, the richest man in the world, took Twitter by surprise when he tweeted about his modest beginning. The Time Magazines Person of The Year, Musk, who is known for his online brawl with politicians who target him over taxes, tweeted about his humble beginnings.

The founder of Tesla and SpaceX was responding to a tweet that was acknowledging his efforts towards increasing American exports.

I came to the US with no money & graduated with over $100k in debt, despite scholarships & working 2 jobs while at school, Musk wrote in a response to the tweet.

The user went on to say, For some reason, its not really cool to appreciate it these days, but he has done more for this country than any of our moronic political leaders.

Musks tweet comes close on the heels with his recent Twitter brawl with US Senator Elizabeth Warren who accused him of freeloading. The exchange of incisive tweets between Musk and Warren went viral, with many supporting Musk.

Elon Musk says that Tesla plans to invest over $10 billion in Gigafactory Texas and will eventually employ 20,000 workers.

Tesla is expected to start Model Y production at Gigafactory Texas in Austin any day now.

The new factory is critical to Teslas expansion plans in the US.

Currently, Tesla sells every car it can make in the US, and it has delivery timelines of close to a year out for some of its most popular vehicles.

All Tesla vehicles currently sold in the US are made at its Fremont factory in California, which can produce about 500,000 electric vehicles per year.

Gigafactory Texas is expected to more than double this output once its fully ramped up, but thats a few years away.

The automaker is going to start with Model Y, which is Teslas most popular vehicle, at the new factory.

Tesla has been guiding a start of production by the end of the year.

With the imminent start of production in the background, there have been talks about the ~$60 million in incentive that the local government gave Tesla to build the factory in Austin.

On Twitter, CEO Elon Musk responded by claiming that Tesla plans to invest as much as $10 billion in the factory over time and directly employ over 20,000 people:

Giga Texas is a $10B+ investment over time, generating at least 20k direct & 100k indirect jobs.

Recent filings revealed that Tesla was spending $1 billion on the project, but thats just for the phase of the new factory.

Once Tesla deploys Cybertruck and Tesla Semi production at the factory, the investment is expected to greatly expand.

Furthermore, the automaker recently officially moved its headquarters at the site, which is expected to expand beyond manufacturing operations over time.

Tesla had previously mentioned 10,000 employees, but now Musk suggests that Tesla will directly employ as many as 20,000 people. Worldwide, Tesla now has over 100,000 employees.

At the end of each year, the internet buzzes with speculationabout who Time magazine will pick as its much-anticipated Person of the Year.

A Dec. 16 Facebook postclaims the magazine made a somber choice this year.

The post seemingly shows the cover ofa Person of the Year issue depicting the caskets carrying 13 American service members killed in Afghanistan in August. Accompanying text says "the men and women Biden failed in Afghanistan" are the magazine's choice.

The post received more than 1,000 likes and400 shares in a day.

But it's not a real cover. Time chose billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk as its Person of the Year.

USA TODAY reached out to the Facebook user who shared the post for comment.

Thirteen U.S. service membersdied Aug. 26 in a suicide bombing attack outside Kabul'sHamid Karzai International Airport, where thousands attempted to flee after the Talibantook overAfghanistan.

Among those killedwere 11 Marines,one Navy hospital corpsman and one Army soldier, according to the Pentagon. The Biden administration was heavily criticizedfor its handling of the situation.

But Time didn't highlight that event with its Person of the Year selection.

Whats Moving? The meme cryptocurrency has fallen 0.83% over a seven-day trailing period.

Against major cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin and Ethereum, DOGE fell 1.55% and 0.18% over 24 hours, respectively.

Since the year began, DOGE has shot up 2804.75%. It has fallen 29.99% over a 90-day period and lost 35.68% of its value in the last 30 days.

Lately I spend more time watching Youtube than regular television. There wasnt much quality content on Youtube at first, but over the past few years some very experienced preppers have started some fantastic channels.

Since a lot of people I talk to arent aware of this, I decided to compile a list of the 100 best prepper and survivalist Youtube channels (in my opinion). It would take days, maybe even weeks to check all these out, so I encourage you to bookmark this page.

I could have included over 100, but I decided to exclude channels that havent been adding new videos lately (as of this writing). That means I had to leave out great channels such as Analytical Survival, P.A.W. Productions, and The Survival Doctor, to name a few. But if I had included every good survival channel the list would have been ridiculously long.

If youre a prepper and theres nothing on TV, subscribe to these channels and your Youtube feed will fill up with hours of great content everyday!

1. Armoured Cockroach A former soldier and paramedic who makes videos about wilderness and urban survival.

2. Babee Blue on the Town One of my favorites. Guns, knives, hunting, fishing, and shooting by a very attractive woman.

3. Bexar Prepper A homesteader with videos on canning, cooking, and general food storage.

4. Big Family Homestead Brad has a large homestead where he lives with his wife and 7 kids. He shares tips on all aspects of homesteading and is a very charismatic guy.

5. Black Scout Survival Another favorite of mine. This guy makes some high-quality tutorials on all sorts of survival skills along with some helpful reviews of survival gear.

6. Bland County Survivorman Videos on hunting, fishing, fire making, and other bushcraft skills.

7. Bohemian Hunting Club Tips on hunting, shooting, scopes, knives, gun maintenance, and more.

8. Bright Agrotech This is a businesses that focuses on vertical farming and gardening. If youre interested in aquaponics, you could learn a lot here.

9. Budget Bugout If you plan on bugging out after a disaster, this is the channel for you. It has gear reviews and tips on how to make the ultimate bug out bag.

10. Bushcraft Bartons An associate pastor teaching bushcraft skills in the Canadian wilderness.

11. Camping Survival The official channel of CampingSurvival.com which sells all types of camping gear. Videos on survival food, wild edibles, water purification, and more.

12. Canadian Prepper This one updates frequently and has a lot of general survival videos, often with an emphasis on health.

13. City Prepping Preparedness and survival for people living in the city. High quality videos on a number of different topics.

14. Commsprepper Probably the best channel for emergency communications. Hes also working on a rainwater collection system.

15. Cr0cket20 Another personal favorite. Learn about backpacking, climbing, guns, knives, and even a little MMA.

16. Cutlery Lover If youre into knives, youll love this guy. He reviews all sorts of knives and also likes to talk about beer.

17. DEMCAD DEMCAD is a libertarian who adds several videos a week on everything from survivalism to politics.

18. Demolition Ranch As he says, this is not your average gun channel. Bullets, body armor, and all sorts of badass contraptions.

19. DrBones NurseAmy Survival medicine and gardening from a medical doctor and a registered nurse. Great advice from people who know what theyre talking about.

20. EconoChallenge How to hike and camp in the wilderness without leaving a trace. This man reveres nature and it shows.

21. Equip 2 Endure Survival gear reviews and podcasts covering a wide range of topics, and the occasional giveaway.

22. Everyday Tactical Vids Mostly videos on plants and knives, but he also talks about health and survival psychology.

23. Far North Bushcraft and Survival The name of the channel says it all. Lonnie lives in Alaska and builds shelters, eats wild edibles, and more.

24. Fun in the Woods Videos on how to building your own shelter, making your own survival tools, cooking food in the wilderness, etc.

25. Funky Prepper Bugging out, food storage, bushcraft, and more. This guy is quite a character.

26. Growing Your Greens The most watched gardening channel on Youtube. Learn how to grow food in your front or backyard.

27. Hickok45 Excellent channel on guns and gun safety. There are new videos several times a week.

28. Idaho Hillbilly A homesteader who is an expert at finding hidden treasures at flea markets and other places. Watch as he turns his property into a self-sufficient permaculture farm.

29. Im Still Workin A lot of videos on gardening, canning, cooking, and baking.

30. InnerBark Outdoors Not only does Andy have years of experience in outdoor living, he is also a cinematographer so his videos are very high quality.

31. IraqVeteran8888 One of the best gun channels on Youtube. Learn about shooting, gunsmithing, handloading, and more.

32. ITS Tactical Imminent Threat Solutions covers a wide range of topics, some of which Id never even considered.

33. Jack Spirko The official channel for Jack Spirko of The Survival Podcast. Learn all about his homestead.

34. James Yeager Discussion about guns and shooting from the guy behind TacticalResponse.com.

35. Jas. Townsend and Son, Inc. James loves to talk about life in the 18th century and he dresses the part. Lots of educational videos here, mostly about cooking.

36. Jnull0 Day to day life on a large homestead. Learn about butchering animals, cooking, canning, and more.

37. KGB Survivalist This guy covers all areas of prepping and reviews guns, knives, and survival gear.

38. Kirsten Dirksen Videos about self sufficiency, simple living, backyard gardening, and craftsmanship.

39. L.D.S. Prepper One of the older channels on this list. Hes a very experience survivalist, especially when it comes to gardening.

67. Survival Know How Survival hacks, tips, tricks, and more. Lots of great info, much of which is organized into top 10 lists.

70. Survival Mike Mike is a certified trainer who knows all about surviving in the wilderness.

71. Survival Skills 101 This covers a lot of common survival skills, but unlike most similar channels he also talks about personal self defense.

72. Survivalist Boards Lots of random homesteading videos from the owner of SurvivalistBoards.com.

73. Survivalist Gardener Videos based on the book, Secret Garden of Survival. Learn how to grow a secret survival garden in your backyard.

74. Survivalist Prepper The official video channel of one of my favorite sites. Lots of great tips and advice, especially for beginners.

75. Texas Prepper 2 If youre into homesteading, this is the channel for you. It covers gardening, raising chickens, fish, livestock, bees, food storage, and so much more.

76. The Daily Prep Watch Dan as he goes from total noob to experienced prepper.

77. The Modern Survivalist One of my very favorites. Fernando lived through the hyperinflationary collapse in Argentina. Hes smart, experienced, and has a lot of wisdom to share.

78. The Patriot Nurse Another one of my very favorites. I have learned a lot about first aid and medical survival from her.

79. The Peaceful Prepper A single gal prepping to survive in an urban environment. She only has a few hundred subscribers so far but I expect this channel to become much more popular.

80. The Sgt Fruitcake Awesome prepper videos with an emphasis on camping and outdoor living.

81. The Survival Channel This mans goal is to be prepared for absolutely anything. He talks a lot about the latest survival gear.

82. The Urban Prepper My favorite channel, probably because he reminds me of me (no, hes not actually me). If you live in a city, you should definitely subscribe to this channel.

83. The Yankee Marshal David is the kind of guy I would love to have a beer with. Hes smart, funny, and hell tell you everything there is to know about guns.

84. TheALOWens Videos about guns, knives, EDC gear, bug out bags, bug out vehicles, and even a little politics.

85. TheHossUSMC Guns, gear, ammunition, home defense, and a little bit of politics.

86. Tiborasaurus Rex Ballistics, shooting, weapons, self defense, and a little bit of religion.

87. Tin Hat Ranch This channel covers all types of prepping and has some great reviews and cool survival hacks.

88. Ultimate Survival Tips Very high quality how-to videos and reviews of survival gear, especially knives.

89. Ultimate Survivalist Mostly backpack and camping videos along with a lot of knife reviews.

90. Utah Prepper 1 Food storage, general survival tips, and several videos about gardening and taking care of chickens.

91. Van Prepper Short, awesome videos about freedom and preparedness. Very entertaining guy.

92. We All Juggle Knives Reviews of knives, flashlights, survival kits, and all sorts of gear.

SPOTY backlash erupts as Southgate and England team bag major awards Didnt win anything’ – Express

Emma Raducanu was crowned this years Sports Personality of the Year winner, seeing off the likes of Adam Peaty and Tom Daley to bag the prize. While BBC viewers were unanimous in their praise for the teenage tennis star, it was a pair of other awards earlier in the ceremony which sparked uproar online. The mens England football team bagged Team of the Year while managerGareth Southgate landed the Coach of the Year gong - but its safe to say many felt their loss in the Euro 2020 final didnt warrant the accolade.

It has been an incredible year for the England team and Southgate as together they took the country to its first major tournament final in over 50 years, in which they lost to Italy.

However, both parties faced fierce opposition in their respective categories - from Team GB Olympics winner to Thomas Tuchels Champions League victory.

So when it transpired Southgate and England had both won, many SPOTY viewers werent impressed.

Taking to Twitter following the wins, Twitter user @DMCI689908 expressed their dismay: Just turned on sports personality of the year saw England football team win team of the year. Just turned off #SPOTY.

While @DragonWales9 firmly put: What has happened to SPOTY?! Losing all credibility. Team of the yearreally! Coach of the yearreally! In an Olympic year a team that comes 2nd contributes to two of the main awards.

And Andy Rockall weighed in: Team of the Year, Coach of the year - Dreadful decision. Good coach, nice guy. P**s poor choice.#SPOTY."

Former Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan even got involved, tweeting: "The #SPOTY Team of the Year award going to a team that didnt win anything perfectly epitomises the absurd new fad of celebrating sporting losers. Theres more kudos/silverware to be had in failing or quitting than actually coming first."

The handing of the prizes came as Hannah Cockroft joined Alex Scott and Gary Lineker on stage to hand over the award for Team of the Year.

In the shortlist alongside the England team were Team GB Swimming, Chelsea FC Men, Chelsea FC Women, England Womens Rugby Union, GB Wheelchair Rugby, Gordon Reid and Alfie Hewitt, Manchester City Men, Team Europe (Golf), St Helens Womens Team and St Helens Mens Team.

After England were announced as winners, Southgate and was joined on stage with player Jude Bellingham and coach Steve Holland to accept the award.

Lineker then kept the trio on stage to announce the Coach of the Year Award, reeling off Southgates fellow nominees beforehand.

They included Catriona Matthew, Emma Hayes, Thomas Tuchel, Mel Marshall and Jane Figueiredo.

After winning both awards, Southgate praised his fellow nominees before paying tribute to those who with England behind the scenes.

"I know a lot of the coaches there who are outstanding, weve got some brilliant talent in this country," he told Lineker and Scott.

"I cant do that without Steve in particular, without all the staff that work with the team.

"Managing in football now is a very complex business and yeah, so Im very fortunate I work with very talented people and they make it easier for me."

The Sports Personality of the Years Awards are available to stream on BBC iPlayer now.
