Bishop Barron and His Bible – The American Conservative

Posted: December 15, 2021 at 10:12 am

Barron is Fulton Sheen's greatest living heir, and his Word on Fire Bible makes the perfect Christmas gift.

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 2015: Robert Barron prostrates before an altar during ordination mass as Auxiliary Bishop at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles, Calif., on Sept. 8, 2015. (Photo by Brian van der Brug / Los Angeles Times via Getty Images)

Every Advent, columnists and periodicals offer their picks for book of the year. My selection this year will be an unusual one: a book that was composed nearly two millennia ago, in an edition that hasnt been fully published. Im speaking of the Word on Fire Bible, the ongoing project by Bishop Robert Barron and his Word on Fire ministry to re-present the Good Book to a nation starved for moral and spiritual truthand for beauty.

Barron, the 62-year-old auxiliary bishop of Los Angeles, is the greatest living heir to Fulton Sheen, the pioneering televangelist who beamed the Christian idea into millions of American living rooms in the last century. Like Sheen, who dominated the chief media forms of his time (radio and television), Barron is a master of todays social platforms. Sheen aimed for maximal lucidity without compromising on intelligence or orthodoxy, and the same is true of Barron.

Like Sheen, Barron is possessed of a seemingly boundless energy. A bishop, even one encouraged by his superiors to carry out a media ministry, has many duties: duties of pastoral care, of administration, and of prayer. I happen to know that Bishop Barron spends a lot of time kneeling on his prie dieu. In between, he somehow finds time to produce an unimaginable volume of books, essays, columns, documentaries, YouTube videos, interviews and so on.

There is one difference. Sheen was eminently a figure of the postwar Protestant-Catholic-Jewish consensus; indeed, he helped build it. Barron, by contrast, finds himself preaching to a sharply polarized age. Some liberal Catholics see their role chiefly as carrying on liberalisms censuring mechanisms within the life of the Church, and they often reproach the bishop for engaging New York Times-certified Bad People like, well, yours truly.

He also gets heat from the other end of the ecclesial spectrum, from crankier traditionalists whose measure of faith is vituperation against the hierarchy and Pope Francis especially. The bishop might be leading many souls to the Church, and speaking especially to the atomized young men and women whose spirits are first kindled by the likes of Jordan Peterson. But because Barron doesnt state everything exactlyas the trads would prefer, they dismiss him.

This dual opposition doesnt make Barron a centrist (whatever that means in a Catholic context). It just means he is prepared to look beyond the cramped horizon of our partisan oppositions to propose a smart, robust, inviting Catholicism. Would that men like Barron benefited from material conditions that made evangelization easierstructures of assent, as my friend the theologian Chad Pecknold calls them.

Creating and maintaining such structures is the task of the Catholic laity, as the Vatican II decreeApostolicam Actuositatemmakes clear. But in the meanwhile, someonehas to evangelize a generation immiserated by neoliberalism, distracted by screens, addicted to porn and painkillers, alienated by divorce and de-natured by gender ideology. Earlier missionaries could take for granted that un-evangelized peoples knew the difference between men and women how much harder and more rewarding the work of a Barron, who must start by teaching American YouTubers about nature as a legible whole (let alone the supernatural).

And yet, Barron does this work, generally with an unflappable smile. A pair of messages unites his massive output. First, he teaches the contemporary gentiles that the legibility of nature points to a divine author. That much, of course, the adherents of various monotheistic faiths can agree on, and Barron the trained Thomist (gently) makes mincemeat of the new atheism.

Second, Barron insists that this author of creation took on human nature so as to elevate the human to the level of the divine. Again and again, Barron rails against attempts to domesticate the God-Man, to reduce him to a mere ethicist or spiritual guru. No, Jesus is too disconcerting for that, as Barron puts it in his acclaimed Catholicismseries: Either Christ really is God made flesh, or he is a mad or evil man, whom we would be right to reject.

But how can an age like ours get to know this Jesus, to test his claims that he is the Son of God?

One way Barron answers this yearning is through the Word on Fire Bible. Its a physically and visually delightful book, packed with commentary from the Church Fathers and more recent sages like Aquinas, Chesterton, Flannery OConnor, and Barron himself. Barrons own commentary on the calling of Saint Matthew reduced me to tears:

Notice how magnetic the converted Matthew has become. To the party flock all of his fellow tax collectors and other sinners. The call of Jesus has summoned Matthew and through him a whole host of others similarly excluded, by their own self-absorption, from the thrill of the divine life. We can only imagine how rowdy, impolite and socially questionable this gang of lowlifes is. But there they are, because of Matthew, around the shepherd of Israel.

Every few pages, readers are treated to a painting from the Churchs great repository of sacred art, so that the likes of Fra Angelico and Caravaggio may do their work of evangelization, too. So far, the four Gospels have been published (in one volume). At the risk of sounding like a door-to-door Bible salesman, I must say: It makes for a perfect Christmas gift. A second, equally glorious volume, which Ive had a chance to preview, includes Acts and the epistles. Thats forthcoming in early 2022.

Meanwhile, take a bow, Your Excellency.

WATCH: SNL mocks Fauci, Cuomo brothers, and COVID ‘conspiracy theories’ – Washington Examiner

Posted: at 10:12 am

Saturday Night Live blasted Dr. Anthony Fauci and Chris and Andrew Cuomo this weekend in a skit showing how the holidays will have to be different this year amid the omicron variant.

Fauci , played by Kate McKinnon, explains to the audience that members of the CDC will act out scenarios to demonstrate how to behave during holiday travel and events. The first scenario is a man who wishes to eat Christmas dinner at a restaurant but has lost his vaccination card.

JORDAN PETERSON SAYS HE WAS LIED TO: 'I'LL GET THE VACCINE IF YOU F***ING LEAVE ME ALONE. AND DID THAT WORK? NO'

"You mean you lost the little 1-inch piece of cardboard they gave you?" a waitress questions the man. "Then you are banished from society. Have fun living in the woods."

Another scenario is of a little girl who wants to sit on Santa's lap and ask him for Christmas presents, but Santa has had some strange side effects from the vaccine.

"Sorry, you can't sit on my lap anymore," Santa says to the girl. "Thanks to the vaccine, my testicles have ballooned in size ... they're as big as grapes now."

Fauci quickly cuts the scene, saying "that's just a conspiracy theory, and I am concerned about that particular man."

The next scenario features the Cuomo brothers, who say they are both unemployed due to COVID-19.

"Hello, I am disgraced New York Governor Andrew Cuomo," one of the comedians says.

"And I am disgraced former CNN host Chris Cuomo," the other says. "And we both lost our jobs, because of COVID."

The best smart thinking and self-improvement books to buy for Christmas 2021 – The Telegraph

Posted: at 10:12 am

Once upon a time three brothers, working together at New Yorks Creedmoor Psychiatric Hospital, discovered that a histamine pill worked better for the mentally ill than electroshock therapy, and so played their part in revolutionising post-war psychiatric medicine. Given his book is called Empire of Pain (Picador, 20), one may rightly guess that Patrick Keefe is setting this family up for a fall. And what a fall: the Sacklers, in learning how to turn drugs into money, seem to have forgotten their humanity. The aggressive over-prescription of oxycontin, made by their company, contributed to an opioid crisis which in total led to the deaths of over half a million Americans. This is a ghastly story, told with rigour and aplomb.

The corruption that attends vast wealth seems to have eluded Bill Gates: he might genuinely want to save the world. How to Avoid a Climate Disaster (Allen Lane, 20) finds him studying hard problems: marginal costs, global equity, steel, cement and (yes) IT. Like any techno-realist, Gates can be twitted over the detail. He underestimates how viral the vegan message has become in the West, and underplays the nuclear waste problem. Still, here is a man worth arguing with.

One things for certain: climate change on its own will not bring down our civilisation. Catastrophes are why we have civilisations in the first place, and when societies collapse, its their own silly fault for having grown sclerotic, knotted and ungovernable. Niall Fergusons Doom (Allen Lane, 25) attempts to relate this epic picture of rise and fall to the responses of governments across the world to the Covid pandemic. Its anecdotal, partisan and oddly touching in its exhortation to keep calm and carry on.

Jordan Peterson is the living exemplar of that advice. A practising Canadian psychologist, rendered dangerously frail by prescription medicine, he has become for some a demagogue, for others the imminent second coming of Christ. The advice in Beyond Order (Allen Lane, 25), a follow-up to his global bestseller 12 Rules for Life, reflects some new and painful awareness of mortality. But it was always Petersons intimate, self-revealing style that made his life advice so powerful, so energising, and so hard to reduce to politics (though God knows people tried).

Petersons war against the fogginess of convenient and avoidant thinking echoes throughout Oliver Burkemans Four Thousand Weeks (Bodley Head, 16.99), a plea to abandon middling priorities and embrace the difficult and the important in life. To do so means resigning oneself to what the Germans, in their genius, dub Eigenzeit that is, the time it takes to do something properly.

Stephen Walkers Beyond (William Collins, 20) celebrates the worlds first man in space, Yuri Gagarin, who had patience and fortitude in spades, not just to weather the Soviets early space programme, but his strange celebrity afterlife, too. In the US, celebrity dogged the Nasa astronauts even before their historic flights. Walker straddles public and private worlds to bring us intimate portraits of the Cold Wars most gentle warriors.

Tristan Gooleys fortitude is nothing to sneeze at, either. Years ago, even as the rest of us were following our new-fangled in-car GPS systems into fields or over the edges of cliffs, the writer was flying and sailing, solo, across the Atlantic, guided by the stars. In The Secret World of Weather (Sceptre, 20) the author of bestsellers The Natural Navigator and How to Read Water entices us to read and even predict the weather, simply by paying attention to the things (trees, buildings, surfaces) all around us.

Deflationary Forces to Help Bitcoins Price Reach $100K in 2022, Says Bloomberg Analyst – CryptoPotato

Posted: at 10:12 am

Mike McGlone Senior Commodity Strategist at Bloomberg expects 2022 to be a successful year for both bitcoin and gold. He believes the primary cryptocurrency will hit $100,000, while the precious metal will trade at $2,000.

The current global financial system is passing through tough times, to say the least. The COVID-19 pandemic, and the health concerns around it, caused many companies to temporarily cease operations or send their workers to work from home. This led to immediate disruptions, crippled productivity, and built a solid base for future monetary issues.

At the same time, numerous central banks started printing vast amounts of fiat currencies to alleviate some of the short-term pain. However, by doing so, the inflation rate surged to unseen levels in decades. In the USA it stands at over 6% the highest it has been in nearly 40 years.

And while national currencies, such as the American dollar, are slowly losing their purchasing power, bitcoin is considered by many as the exact opposite. As of the moment, it is an inflationary asset. Its fixed supply of 21 million coins ever to exist gives it a trustworthy scarcity, making it an attractive investment tool that many people got on board during the ongoing financial turbulence.

Nonetheless, Bloombergs Mike McGlone predicted that deflationary forces will prevail next year and inflation will stop spreading across the globe. This process could help the primary cryptocurrency to tap a significant milestone in its USD development of $100,000. According to the expert, the same factors will cause gold to climb to $2,000 and oil to hit $50.

Another recent statement from Bloomberg revealed that many investors currently protect themselves from the rising inflation by getting into bitcoin. The company even called the leading cryptocurrency the best inflation hedge around.

The theory of BTC being such an alternative is supported by many prominent names, including Anthony Scaramucci, Paul Tudor Jones, and Barry Sternlicht. Not long ago, Jordan Peterson a clinical psychologist and a famous YouTube personality also joined this club.

After having an educational conversation with Dr. Saifedean Ammous, who stated that bitcoin is essentially the most powerful defensive technology against inflation, Peterson said he bought more BTC.

Subsequently, John Authers journalist at Bloomberg determined that BTC has achieved 99.996% deflation over the last ten years, meaning that the price of a single coin in 2011 now costs just 0.004 of it today.

Go Behind The Lens With Travel Photographer Tyson Mayr | Urban List – The Urban List

Posted: at 10:08 am

Its been a hot minute but travel is finally back. The hypothetical sabbatical has turned into a reality and we are so ready to book those flights and plan our next wild adventure.

These days, travel goes hand in hand with capturing and sharing great photos and memories, so we asked photographer and avid adventurerTyson Mayr for his top tips.

Mayrs travel photography career has been a wild one. After quitting his corporate job, buying a one-way ticket and travelling to 28 countries across six continents on a budget of $25 a day, he then won The Best Job In The World competitiona $100,000 prize to travel the world for 12 months creating content for a travel company. Most recently, hes been travelling across Australia hosting National Geographic TV series, Only In Aus where he uncovers some of the most unique and bizarre natural phenomenons that occur, only in Aus.

From his most outrageous adventures like knocking on the door of a random Kyrgyzstan yurt to the tech he cant live withoutlike the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 5G available at Optusstrap in for all his inspiring travel tales and all the photography tips.

[Laughs] This is an answer that will change depending on when Im asked and perhaps what Im craving at the time. Brazil was the first country I fell in love with and one that I hope to still live in one day, even if just for sixmonths.

I also love the hidden underground subcultures you can find in Tokyo and South Korea.

The most life-changing moments for me have been on my trips through Ugandainstalling water filters with an NGO called RainCatcherbut also getting off the grid to trek with Gorillas and Chimpanzees.

Anywhere I havent been is generally what excites me the most though. I recently did a motorbike trip through The Stans, which finished with a 14-day trek through Afghanistan. There is something quite thrilling about being somewhere that so few tourists have visited. Theres something very pure about the locals you meet.

I have to say, Broome. Most know Broome for its white, sandy beaches that you can watch the sunset from the back of a cameltheir stretched shadows make for an interesting drone shotbut if you venture out of town a little you will find bright-red sand beaches that contrast beautifully with a turquoise ocean that surrounds it. Located at the mouth of the Kimberly, Broome is a landscape photographer's dream about and somewhere that really is unique to Australia.

Image taken onSamsung Galaxy Z Fold3 5G available atOptus

While riding my motorbike through Kyrgyzstan towards one of the highest altitude lakes in the world, I realised as the sun was setting that I was a long way from where I needed to sleep and the night time sky was quickly blanketing me with sub-zero temperatures. To make matters worse, I took a wrong turnyou have to remember the roads here are just a little more prominent than a cow trackand ended up several hours away from anywhere safe to sleep with a fuel tank that was flirting with empty. Suddenly I saw a yurt pitched a few hundred metres away from the road and even though it was 11pm, I pulled my bike in to see if the nomadic locals living there might be able to sell me a little fuel.I was greeted by a family of seven who quickly invited me in and shared a meal with me. They rolled a blanket out on the ground just next to themeveryone sleeps on the floor next to each otherand for the next day or so I lived with them and helped them with their livestock, sharing as much as we all could with each other without speaking the same language.

Its moments like thisthat make me love travel. Often I share images of well-known destinations or stunning locations, but the truth is it really is the journey and local experience you encounter that makes a region special. This is something I have to constantly remind myself of when shooting a destinationthe image is just a small part of my trip, dont forget to travel! This is why I also love to travel less prepared. The more prepared you are, the less chance you will encounter something completely unexpected.

Summiting Kilimanjaro is still one of the most surreal moments Ive ever had. I was robbed at gunpoint in a violent attack just days before this in a different part of the world so Im sure that adversity added to the entire experience. Being on the top of Africas highest peak was one of the only times Ive been emotional from a sight or experience.

Winning The Best Job In the World competition was also a very defining moment. I had been slaving away at photography and videography for two years before that, making many sacrifices to work on my craft and that competition truly fell right at the moment that I was most preparedI was announced as the winner on the TODAY show live in New York and it certainly was a moment that changed things for me mentally. You never know when a life-changing opportunity will present itself, but you better be prepared for when it does.

Make an effort to put yourself in new situations every single daystepping outside of your comfort zone is one of the most beneficial things you will get from travel and where you will truly discover who you are and what it is that excites you in life.

Couchsurfing.com is a game-changer. Staying with locals in a new part of the world is the best way to authentically experience it. Some of my best travel moments and friends have been made this way. It was also how I was able to travel to 50 countries on $25 a day.

Noise-cancelling headphones. This is important for video editing and working out, but a must-have when it comes to flights and working in busy cafes.

A camera in my pocket. They say the best camera you have is the one closest to you and I have found this to be true many times. Having a top-quality camera that travels with you everywhere like theFold3 means you never miss out on an unexpected moment. And trust me, when you are abroad, there are a lot! Before this phone, I have missed out on a lot of amazing moments, like a wolf running to the side of my car, simply because my big camera was packed in my car.

My laptop. From emails and research to editing photography and video for clients, this is a device that is crucial to everything I do. The only downside is its size and weight in my bagsomething you really do notice on seven-day treks, so using the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 5G as a replacement for this on longer trips will be a lifesaverit already is on smaller ones!

Always shoot in RAW. The Fold3 is a photography beast and I love that it has a Pro Mode, which allows you to adjust all of your camera settings and shoot in RAW. I havent had a phone that allows me to do this before and shooting in RAW means you really have the data in your images to edit it the way it needs to be.

I was at Lamington National Park recently and with Pro Mode, I was able to slow the shutter speed right down and really smooth out the waterfall behind me. Not just that, I didnt need to set a timer to self-shoot myself, I could simply yell out Cheese and the camera would take my image for me.

Image taken onSamsung Galaxy Z Fold3 5G available atOptus

My first trip will be to LA for meetings, followed immediately by Rwanda to trek with the gorillas and possibly Antarctica after that. Both of these are for a project I am launching in 2022, where others will be able to join me on these tripssome of them as specialised photography adventures.

Right now, Im in conversations with a major streaming service for my own travel show in 2022 and Im also working on a new travel company that will launch in 2022 alsosomething which others will be able to join me on the adventures I partake in.

Capture epic travel memories with the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 5G available at Optus. With its exceptional camera quality and ability to shoot epic angles, there are so many reasons why its the must-have travel tech accessory.

And the best part is, you can buy it now and pay over a 12, 24 or 36 month period on a device payment plan with OptusPay completely interest-free.

The best ways to get around the Maldives: whether you island hop or fly and flop – Lonely Planet Travel News

Posted: at 10:06 am

The Maldives may be the smallest country in Asia, but its also the worlds most dispersed, with its 115 sq m (298 sq km) of land divided across 1200 islands that lie scattered across a whopping 90,000 sq m (233,100 sq km) of Indian Ocean. Its no surprise then that sea and air travel are the key modes of transport.

Many travelers come to "fly and flop", but if youre too itchy-footed to spend two weeks in one spot, its easier than you might think to travel throughout the country. From public buses to luxury yachts, heres how to get around in the Maldives.

There are 17 regional airports scattered throughout the Maldives, with regular domestic flights provided by FlyMe and Maldivian. If youre traveling to local islands, ask your guesthouse to book flights for you, as theyll be able to access discounted tickets. Flights do sell out, so try to book far in advance if you want to avoid an overnight stay in Mal (though theres plenty to see there if you do get stuck).

Get more travel inspiration, tips and exclusive offers sent straight to your inbox with our weekly newsletter.

No runway? No problem. Seaplanes run by Trans Maldivian Airways and Maldivian allow locals and tourists to reach almost any island in the country, and give passengers unbeatable views of the countrys key selling point: countless sandy islands ringed by aquamarine water. The endless blue is so alluring, sightseeing flights are a popular pastime for visitors with deep pockets.

Resorts often charter seaplanes or in some cases, own their own to transport guests from A to B as quickly and smoothly as possible. Flights only take place in daylight hours however, so youll want to book an international flight that lands in the morning to take advantage.

If you plan to see the Maldives independently and youre on a budget, traveling by public ferry is your best option. They connect all inhabited or "local" islands (not private resorts, which require speedboat or seaplane) and prices range from $5 to $30. But be warned: timetables can be complicated and services unreliable. If youre planning on island hopping, be prepared to spend lots of time waiting around you may even need to spend the night on interim islands to get to your destination. Check online timetables to see whats possible, but its worth contacting your guesthouse directly to get the most reliable information.

There are various types of speedboat journey in the Maldives. Many visitors take speedboats to their chosen resorts from Velana International Airport or Mal, which are arranged well in advance. They typically cost $100 to $400, but the fare is often absorbed into the price of the vacation package. Prefer to have your pick of the seats? Private transfers can cost anything from $65 to $1200, depending on the distance traveled. Local islands are served by scheduled speedboats too ($30 to $110 one-way) and are quicker and more convenient than ferries. Check Atoll Transferfor more details.

If you want to hop between uninhabited islands, stopping at empty beaches and off-the-radar sandbars, consider chartering a dhoni a Maldivian boat made of coconut timber traditionally used for fishing and ferrying cargo around the archipelago. Your chosen guesthouse or resort will be able to help you arrange a charter; local boats start from $70150 a day, while resort prices range from around $400800 a day exact costs depend on how far you want to travel, and for how long. You can arrange a group dhoni cruise in advance check out the tours from G Adventures or Responsible Travel for inspiration.

Dream of sailing around the Maldives in a luxury yacht usually reserved for the likes of Hollywood A-listers? Planning a very fancy family reunion? Private crewed yacht and catamaran charters are widely available, but come at an eye-watering price: anything from $20,000 to $300,000 a week. Depending on your deal you can follow set routes or decide your own itinerary on the fly. Some luxury resorts offer day trips or overnight trips to give guests a taste of the billionaire lifestyle.

Road cyclists looking for long-distance rides and hill climbs wont find what theyre looking for on these low-lying islands. But if pedaling along palm-lined trails towards the breakfast buffet sounds like your kind of bike ride, youll want to choose a larger resort island such as Soneva Fushi, Anantara Kihavah and Six Senses Laamu, where each villa or bungalow comes with your own private bicycles. Many guesthouses also offer free bike rentals or cycling tours check out Beach Villa Ukulhas and Barefoot Eco Hotel for starters.

Buses in the Maldives are cheap and comfortable, but services are limited to Mal and Addu City. The handiest one for travelers is the shuttle between Velana International Airport and Hulhumal.

Besides the traffic-clogged capital city and a few inhabited islands, the Maldives is blissfully car-free. Pint-sized Mal is eminently walkable, and other large local islands are easy to traverse by bike though taxis are available if you need them.

The Maldives isnt the easiest place to travel if you have accessibility needs for example, there are no jet bridges at the airport, meaning youll need to embark and disembark via the aircraft stairs; guide dogs (all dogs in fact) are prohibited throughout the country; and getting on and off speedboats and public ferries can be a hassle if you use a wheelchair. But staff are unfazed by such challenges and are more than willing to offer manual assistance it also helps to let your resort or transfer operator know about your requirements in advance.

Four long years ago, America went into convulsions over revelations that Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein sexually preyed on women pursuing careers in show business. Thus was launched the #MeToo era in which women openly spoke of sexual violence at the hands of rich, powerful men.

Numerous cases have since come to the fore, many seemingly of merit but some colored by spite, mental disturbance or money. Not all accusations, even ones with substance, are equal.

Start with the extraordinary case of hedge funder Jeffrey Epstein, who lured underage girls to his palaces in Palm Beach, Florida, and the Virgin Islands. Epstein is said to have committed suicide by hanging, though many suspect he was murdered.

The real scandal was not his allegedly insatiable lust but his procuring of girls younger than 18. The girls, at least one as young as 14, could not legally give consent even if they verbally did.

But some of the injured parties were in their 20s, which makes the extent of their victimization less clear. A wealthy and handsome single man surrounded by vast luxury could have been seen as a conduit to a life of glamour.

Filthy Rich, a documentary about Epstein, spends a good amount of time with Sarah Ransome. She was young but in her early 20s when she flew to Epsteins private island on his private plane. There, she claimed, he raped her several times.

But when they got back to New York, Ransome moved into an apartment owned by Epstein and the sex continued. I still believed he would help me get to fashion school, she said. And he was giving her money.

And she has a book to sell.

What do you do with this? The documentary neglected to mention that Ransome had previously worked as an exotic dancer and escort. On camera, she played the ingenue, saying in a sing-song that when she arrived in New York, I didnt know anyone and I didnt have money. She cried unconvincingly.

Rape is a heinous crime, whether or not the victim is a woman of experience. But Ransome kept going back.

She tried to finesse this by writing that her mother was a severe alcoholic and she was raped twice in her early teens. She said that this traumatic history left her susceptible to abuse by the likes of Epstein. That would be undeniably true, but Epstein came later.

There is the ongoing case of E. Jean Carroll, a writer who accused Donald Trump of raping her, which he denies. Shes currently suing the former president for defamation for calling her a liar and saying shes not my type. Does making a crude remark constitute defamation? The Biden administration doesnt seem to think so.

The rape accusation is also problematic. Carroll waited 23 years before going public with it in a story for New York magazine and when Trump was president. She appeared on the cover modeling the dress she wore that day.

And she had a book to sell.

The former Elle magazine columnist wrote that she and Trump had recognized each other at the Bergdorf Goodman department store in New York, at which point she agreed to help him find a gift for an unidentified woman. Carroll ended up accompanying him into a dressing room in the lingerie department with a flimsy thing that Trump wanted her to model. She said she was simply joshing.

A very serious crime may have then occurred. But it has yet to be verified, and again, this wasnt a case of a young girl being plucked off the streets.

The details change the heat of these stories. They matter, even when they involve predators and creeps.
