Drinking To The Future: Heres How Bella Hadid And Jen Batchelor Are Leading The Age Of Sober Curiosity With Kin Euphorics – Forbes

Posted: December 7, 2021 at 5:38 am

Cofounders Jen Batchelor and Bella Hadid

The earliest evidence of wine production dates back millennia, the use of alcohol as medicine was first mentioned in Sumerian and Egyptian texts from circa 2100 B.C. It is certainly no secret, humans across the globe have imbibed in different forms for centuries. Now, we are going through yet another evolution of alcohol consumption.

In the American social and often professional world, getting drinks among friends and colleagues has been understood as a means for maintaining relations, a way to further connect. But younger generations are becoming turned off by alcohol and the market tide is shifting.

Leading no-abv spirits brand, Kin Euphorics, is at the forefront of this cultural shift offering an empowering alternative for the Generation Dry. Kin first launched in 2018 as the first Euphoric to enter the market. By way of an expert combination of adaptogens, nootropics, and botanics, Kin cofounders, Jen Batchelor and Bella Hadid, have created a drink that not only elevates your mood but also supports brain health, something entirely new to the drink category.

I asked myself how can we give people that sense of relaxation through the mechanism, the parts of our body, the gut-brain access that affects mood rather than inducing it in a way that is very very detrimental to our body, says Batchelor.

We never seem to ask ourselves how alcohol is affecting our brains. And thats the big leap and the big bet that we made early on that still hasnt been connected in a mass way. But when I was surveying people to ask why they drink and why they want to moderate their drinking the number one reason everyone was talking about was for their liver. And Im like right, but whats being affected first? When you get drunk - it's the mind thats being affected. It's the adrenals, it's the hormone imbalance that is getting completely rocked to give you this sense of relaxation.

Between 2002 and 2018, the number of adults aged 18-22 in the U.S. who abstained from alcohol increased from 20% to 28% for those in college and from about 24% to 30% for those not in school, say researchers at the University of Michigan and Texas State University. Alcohol abuse among both groups decreased by roughly half according to the same study.

The market is also speaking: non-alcoholic beverage sales increased by 33% to $331 million over the last 52 weeks, according to data conducted by Nielsen. These products have done especially well in e-commerce, as Nielsen found a 315% increase in online non-alcoholic and low-alcoholic beverage dollar sales at the same time.

Cofounder Bella Hadid

But when Batchelor originally came up with the idea for Kin, it really came from me wanting to scratch my own itch. I share a lot of the same interests and the same pain points as the modern drinker today. Why are millennials drinking less? Its because theyve been there. Theyve had too much and now they are coming out the gate saying alcohol is kind of gauche and they say they dont want to be drunk, it's lame.

In researching to better understand the younger consumers desire for an alt drink, Batchelor found that what our research really shows is that so many people associate alcohol with poisoning yourself in the more extreme cases and then we have more people who consider themselves mindful drinkers. They dont want to be the drunk person at a party, they dont want to waste their time which is the ultimate currency today. They want to wake up and have full autonomy of their day and not be hungover.

Before developing Kin in 2018, Jen was living the NYC grind, I had a crazy schedule running a business, having a side hustle and I was studying Ayurveda at the same time I started noodling on this. I thought man, why isnt there a smart alternative that makes me feel like Im doing something great for myself? she said.

With the rising interest in wellness from slow food to beauty, fashion, and skincare, it is clear people are becoming increasingly mindful about what they put into their bodies. I think now we are getting too smart for a mocktail cocktail alone that has 40 grams of sugar, that you will pay 20 bucks for. People are learning more and more about wellness, said Batchelor.

Kin acts as a sort of social lubricant that wont get you drunk or hungover as it does not contain alcohol but still offers relaxation or energy and responsibly helps one let loose. Lightwave promotes relaxation while Kin Spritz promotes energy. Kin Spritz is infused with notes of ginger, bitters, and citrus to stimulate focus and energy. While the Lightwave flavor profile combines lavender- vanilla, birch, and smoked sea salts. The euphoric properties come from its active ingredients of Reishi Mushroom, saffron, L-Tryptophan. And although responses to Kin differ, many consumers report having a sense of calm, clearer thinking making the social connection more fluid.

Both Batchelor and Hadids very different backgrounds lend to making a collaborative team for growing Kin. Batchelor used to live in Saudi Arabia, and among the expats, alcohol was often the connector, she grew up with the social drink acting as a connector which inspired the creation of Kin.

It was the thing that brought us, expats, all together. Whether you were Australian, American or Lebanese, we all sort of came around these traditions that were primitive to us. My father became this community gatherer as he would distill alcohol and make moonshine, he became known for this. So, I saw and experienced the disparity between the ritual that was preserved in this ancient type of community building and sharing a drink with someone versus what I saw when I moved to the States which was using alcohol to cope. It was less about enjoyment; I saw what was initially intended to be medicine, because if you go back to the history of alcohol you understand that. They were herbal wines for a reason, medicinal wines for a reason. They were seen as a balm to society, something that helps you connect with the divine, to help you digest your food, says Batchelor.

Kin cofounders, Jen Batchelor and Bella Hadid

I wanted to reconnect to what the original intent of these tonics was, she says.

Hadids initial introduction to Kin was as a lover and consumer of it. The drink was placed in her fridge by a friend who knew she loved all things wellness. The universe placed it there, she told Vogue. Especially when you think of her massive modeling career success which often means long workdays, a jet lag-ridden globe-trotting schedule, an incredibly exciting life that also tethers on burnout. Add that on top of her Lyme disease which Hadid has said on social media still leaves her with side effects like brain fog and exhaustion as well as her social anxiety. She says, Kin offered her a remedy.

The drink has ingredients like GABA, a naturally occurring nootropic chemical that helps with relaxation, and tyrosine a mood enhancer. She hoped that maybe, the drink could help mellow her anxiety, relax and help her to have fun.

She has so many amazing ideas on how to expand on that original concept, so it's been amazing. She is a true partner, a true co-conspirator day in and day out. And works her ass off, says Batchelor.

Hadid has a meaningful role with Kin, collaborating with Batchelor to run branding, social initiatives, and formulation. Kin drinks will soon contain lavender grown on the Hadid family farm in Pennsylvania.

Mackenzie Connelly, of Endeavor, who helped broker the deal between Kin and Hadid talks about the changing drinking culture and why this is the next frontier of drinking, In terms of the functional beverage market, rates of binge drinking are decreasing while the number of people identifying as non-drinkers is increasing especially among that 21-34-year-old age group. And we believe that beverages that are not only non-alcoholic but also those that provide tangible functional benefits, be it sleep aid or social anxiety or improved energy - will disrupt drinking culture.

The youth of today have spoken and Kin is listening.

Mind For Numbers? Try Out These Games – The Citizen

Posted: at 5:38 am

For some of us the mere memory of math class is enough to send shivers down our spine, but for others numbers are fascinating. They are a way for us to find order in a chaotic world, a way to tap into the logical side of our minds, numbers can be brilliant. If any of this resonates with you, then as you probably already know, you have a mind for numbers. There are lots of ways that you can exercise this part of your brain, but arguably the most fun way is through number games. These are some of those games that you might enjoy.

Blackjack

Blackjack requires quick mental math skills

The rules to this game are really simple and you only need two people to play, or if you're on your own then you can always play online. The game begins with each player being dealt two cards, you take a look at your cards and add them up. You want your cards to add up to as close to 21 as possible, without going over. If your cards are close then you can choose to stick and see what the dealer has in their hand. If your cards are further away then you can twist and get another card until you're close enough to 21, or you go bust. Blackjack is the perfect game for those who are lightning fast at mental maths. Algebra might not be your strong point, but if you can add up to 21 then you've got what's necessary to do well at this game. If you want to play online then looking for a bonus is a good way to make sure that your play money goes as far as possible. They're easy to find as long as you're happy to sign up to a new site to play.

2048

If you're after a mobile game that you can pull out in any dull moment then 2048 is a great one. The beauty of this game is in its simplicity, your numbers simply double until you can't anymore. You'll start with a selection of tiles with the number 2 on them. If you slide the tiles together they'll multiply to make 4. The same will happen with your tiles marked 4, they'll multiply together to make 16. Additional tiles will add every round, so it's up to you to make sure that you can always make a path for like tiles to meet one another. If you make it all the way to 2048 then you'll have beaten the game, but in all honesty, if you can make it to the tile before then you'll have done well!

Sudoku

One of the original fascinating numbers games, sudoku is easy to find anywhere. You can play online, on your mobile, in a dedicated sudoku book, or even in the back of most newspapers. For those who've never played before, the idea is simple. You start off with a 3x3 square, filled with 9 more individual 3x3 squares. Within each row and column, you can only place the numbers 1-9 once each. The same rule applies within each of the small 3x3 squares. In the beginning, there'll be some numbers already filled in for you to get you started. Depending on how much of a challenge you want your game to be, there'll be more numbers (easier) or fewer numbers (harder). You can pick up whole puzzle books of these games for just a couple of dollars which are usually pocket-sized so you can carry them around with you.

So, if you want to step right into the blackjack table, you need to know a few things from the very beginning.

It is played with several decks of cards on the table, the 6-Deck variant is the most popular (when the number of decks is more than four, a special shuffling device is used shoe). 21 is the value that relieves you of any worries, and the combination of Ace+10 gives you a win. You can stop at any close value, because the basic idea of the game is not to exceed 21. The ace is 1 or 11 (of your choice), cards up to 10 (inclusive) are worth their equivalent, and those over (excluding the Ace) are worth 10 points.

Andrew Zimmern Went To Charlize Theron’s Party And We Have FOMO – Mashed

Posted: at 5:38 am

A holiday party with gambling, famous guests, delicious food, and more? Yes, please. Andrew Zimmern, known as Chefaz on Instagram, raved about the FOMO-inducing holiday party hosted by Charlize Theron he went to over the weekend. The famous chef and food show host said, "And you throw the best parties, too! Insane food, blackjack, craps, roulette, best photo booth ever, shot luge, Michael Bolton, that cake...and your huge heart."

The picture in the post, which features Theron flashing a peace sign with her arm around a smirking Zimmern, seemed to be a particular point of either praise, jealousy, or some combination of both. The professional level lighting on display in the snap is on point, or maybe everyone just looks fantastic when basking in the glow of Charlize Theron. Author Dan Buettner even chimed in with a cheeky comment, seemingly aimed at Zimmern, that said what we're all thinking: "You're looking a little too smug."

Other commenters praised Zimmern's beard and applauded Theron's charity work and down-to-earth personality. Comments on Michael Bolton being thrown into the list of party favors show mixed reviews. Whether you like the flute-playing icon or not, there was a shot luge and cake, folks! It seems that all party-goers had a great time, and those who didn't attend at least got some hot tips for their own holiday festivities.

Movies to watch out for: The Card Counter (2021): but don’t bet on it – Pattaya Mail

Posted: at 5:38 am

Poker-face takes on a new meaning.

If you ever wanted to win in the casino, theres some useful advice here. Roulette is the game which offers you the best chance betting on red or black. If you win the first time, just walk away. If you lose, also walk away. The main character William, played by Oscar Isaac, also reminds you that you have to count the cards already played if you want to win at Blackjack.Strangely, William Tell (his actual surname is Tillich) isnt really interested in cards at all. He served a long prison sentence in the US for being a guard in Abu Ghraib, the infamous torture center in Iraq used by the Americans after the fall of Saddam Hussein. He learned the arts of cards to pass the time and, with nothing to do after his release, turned these skills into a career of sorts.

William is a low key gambler because he doesnt want to be thrown out of casinos for card counting. Hes a loner, always on the move, a man of habit. He stays in cheap motels where he assiduously covers all the furniture with white sheets and takes down any pictures on the wall. This oddity is never explained, but likely reflects his preference for bare rooms. Probably its a reminder of prison cells in the USA or torture chambers in Iraq.

Despite his under the radar approach, two people notice him. La Linda (Tiffany Haddish) sees his potential and attempts to recruit him to her stable of gamblers. Then theres Cirk (Tye Sheridan), a high school dropout who hopes to persuade him to seek revenge on a mutual enemy. Instead, William invites Cirk to join him on the casino circuit. The plot to kill the mutual enemy goes haywire.

But the plot isnt the point and writer and director Paul Schrader knows it. The film is about one mans struggle with his own demons and is strongly in the tradition of Martin Scorseses psychological movies. Just think of Taxi Driver (the cabbie), Light Sleeper (the coke slinger), First Reformed (the godless minister) or American Gigolo (the male prostitute). The Card Counter is about struggling with your own secrets rather than cashing in on the fact that three sevens can beat a Blackjack.

Today it is widely believed that books are hopelessly outdated and there is no point in reading them. This is not entirely true: books will be a good starting point for most beginners. We also recommend reading less popular today but exciting books like Mollys Game by Molly Bloom or Casino Royale by Ian Fleming. They contain both interesting stories and tips on how to beat a casino.

The Most Famous Players in The NBA Who Are Fond of Gambling – Market Research Telecast

Posted: at 5:38 am

The connection between professional athletes is well established. The simple fact is that rich athletes are very fond of gambling. Whether it is because they have too much money, their competitive nature, their personality, or some combination of those factors, we often hear about some famous athletes that have lost a small fortune gambling. NBA players are no exception from this rule and over the years, the league has had its fair share of scandals involving its top stars and gambling.

Charles Barkley is known as perhaps the best basketball player that has never won an NBA championship. In terms of gambling, he is also regarded as the player that has lost the most money gambling. According to his own estimates, he lost between $10 and 15 million dollars in the last 30 years. These mind-boggling numbers prove two things. First, regardless of how much he enjoys gambling and betting, Barkley isnt very good at either. Second, he doesnt know when to quit. Interestingly, Barkley never denied that he is losing staggering amounts of money on his gambling activities, but always claimed that it isnt a problem, as he can easily afford it. His record is losing $2.5 million in a single sitting at a blackjack table. He was also on the receiving end of a lawsuit filed by Wynn Las Vegas casino for not paying a $400,000 marker in 2008.

The former 2001 NBA MVP, Alan Iverson, has made more than $200 million just from team contracts in his career. Thanks to his gambling escapades, he came perilously close to losing it all several times. Iverson enjoyed playing all sorts of gambling games, including poker, blackjack, and slots. He also had a passion for sports betting but was infamous for being a sore loser. His outbursts after losing have led him to be kicked out and even banned from several casinos. His most infamous incident happened in 2004 at Ballys Atlantic City casino, when he urinated in a trash can and was promptly banned from ever entering the casino ever again. In those days, online casinos were just getting started, so Iverson didnt have an option to easily compare and find a new casino like we have today. A ban was permanent and even served as a sort of a wake-up call for the former Philadelphia 76ers star player.

Antoine Walker is probably the most tragic cautionary tale in modern NBA. The former NCAA champion with Kentucky, Walker was drafted 6th by the Boston Celtics in the 1996 NBA Draft. His career was off to a great start. He led Boston in scoring in his rookie year and made the All-Rookie First Team. Two years later, Walker and Pierce led Boston to the teams first playoff appearance in seven years. They reached the Eastern Conference Finals before being eliminated by the New Jersey Nets in six games. Walker made it to the All-Star Team. However, his gambling addiction was already affecting his career and Boston traded him to Dallas, which promptly sent him to Atlanta. He changed teams several times and retired in 2012. Just two years later, he filed for bankruptcy, having blown through an estimated $108 million of his career earnings.

His Airness is perhaps the biggest gambler that has ever played in the NBA. His exploits are legendary and stories about his gambling still resurface today, decades after he stopped playing basketball. Jordan claimed that gambling never affected him adversely because he was rich and that it was simply a consequence of his competitive nature. Whether it is true or not, Jordans gambling issues have taken a toll on his personal wife and perhaps even his career.

Longevity Experts Predict These At-Home Resources Will Add Years To Your Life – mindbodygreen.com

Posted: at 5:37 am

"We are living through one of the greatest medical revolutions in human health, with medical wearables, home testing, and the ability to measure and control one's biological age," says Sinclair. "With over $20B being invested into longevity research and development, 2022 is set to be a turning point that ushers in an age in which we have much more control over the human body and an understanding about which lifestyles have the most impact on our present and future health."

In our 2021 Wellness Trends, we discussed the rise of wearables with health micro-tracking featuressuch as skin temperature variation, pulse oximetry, blood oxygen sensors, body composition, heart rate variability, respiratory rate, and advanced sleep metrics. Suddenly, data previously only available in advanced medical facilities was now accessible to the publicall from the convenience of a small wearable device.

On the heels of the influx of new health trackers, in 2021, we saw companies go one step further to help get a better picture of an individual's overall health. We're talking about the at-home testing boom.

Perhaps a response to the rise of telemedicine, the interest in personalized health, or mounting emphasis on well-being and longevity as a wholewhatever the catalyst, there have never been more accessible, at-home ways to get a detailed breakdown of your health.

Take Viome, for example, a testing service that analyzes your blood and stool, then produces health insights, personalized food recommendations, and even targeted supplements for your unique biology.

"Viome is dedicated to creating a disease-free world where people can take control of their health from the comfort of their own homes," says Viome Founder and CEO Naveen Jain. "This year, they reached the outstanding goal of helping over 300,000 individuals improve their overall health through health insights and actionable nutrition recommendations." As Jain shares with mbg, just 10 years ago, a test that sequenced complete gene expression (mRNA) of a biological sample could cost over $10,000now, Viome offers it for $99.

What's more, the data collection goes beyond individual benefit and may have far-reaching impacts. "Viome has published clinical trial results that showed more than 30% improvements in depression, diabetes, IBS, and anxiety after four months with people using Viome food and supplement recommendations," says Jain. "Using this data, they have developed predictive biomarkers for over 30 chronic diseases including metabolic diseases, autoimmune diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, mental health, and biological aging."

Of course, Viome is just one example of a company bringing advanced health testing to consumers' homes. Everlywell Health offers at-home blood tests for everything from metabolism to vitamin D and inflammation, to help capture a snapshot of various aspects of your health status.

Earlier this year, Lumen hit the market as the first handheld, portable device to accurately measure metabolism, using just your breathallowing consumers to better optimize blood sugar levels, improve metabolic flexibility, and help stave off metabolic disease.

Levelsa technology that gives you real-time biometric feedback about how your body reacts to food and exercise, through continuous glucose monitoringhas skyrocketed in popularity, with a current waitlist of over 100,000 people.

Sinclair personally uses InsideTracker, a blood test that looks at 43 biomarkers to measure health. He's also developed a test that measures biological age and provides recommendations. (You can sign up here to be one of the first to try it.)

All of that is just the tip of the iceberg. Just ask Sergey Young, a longevity expert and author of The Science and Technology of Growing Young, who started the Longevity Vision Fund three years ago. The fund currently works with 200-plus companies a year, to "accelerate longevity breakthroughs and to make them more accessible and affordable to everyone," he shares with mbg. His goal? Dick Allen wronged by Hall of Fame once again – White Cleat Beat

Posted: at 5:34 am

The Hall of Fame added six new members on Sunday.Gil Hodges, Jim Kaat, Minnie Mioso, Tony Oliva, Bud Fowler, and Buck ONeil were all voted to immortality, a fitting tribute to their careers and contributions to the game. However, one deserving player, Dick Allen, was again left on the outside.

Allen missed out by just a single vote, being named on 11 of the 16 ballots. This is the second time this has happened, as he had missed by just one vote during his previous time on the ballot.

It is hard to argue Allens credentials. A seven time All Star, he was the 1964 NL Rookie of the Year and the 1972 AL MVP. While known as a member of the Phillies, he played for five different teams in his 15 year career, ending his time with the Oakland As. In that time, he produced a .292/.378/.534 batting line, hitting 351 homers and 320 doubles.

But Allen was more than his statistics. He was a controversial player during his career, never afraid to speak his mind at a time when teams wanted their black players to remain quiet. He frequently lobbied for his black teammates, leading front offices to consider him cantankerous and someone that would fracture the roster along racial lines.

Allen had left the Phillies the first time as part of the infamous Curt Flood Trade, with Flood refusing to head to Philadelphia due to the racism that Allen had endured. Allen walked out on the White Sox in 1974, and spent a great deal of time at the horse track instead of practicing or working out. He refused to report to the Braves after being traded to Atlanta, eventually going back to the Phillies when they were the only team that would take him on.

But through it all, there is no question that Allen was a talented player. He was one of the best players of the 1960s, his numbers held down by the second Dead Ball Era. His peak, from 1964 through 1974, was incredible. His induction will come in time.

Once again, Dick Allen was snubbed by the Hall of Fame. He should have been inducted years ago as his resume stands the test of time.
