What is cirrhosis? what does it do? – The Daily Star

Posted: at 5:10 am

Cirrhosis is a prevalent disease worldwide. It is also known as liver cirrhosis or hepatic cirrhosis, and end-stage liver disease.

It is a late stage of scarring of the liver tissues caused by many forms of liver diseases and conditions.

The scar tissues are called fibrosis. Too much fibrosis causes impaired liver function and eventually liver failure.

It means, each time your liver is injured, it tries to repair itself by forming scar tissue or fibrosis. As more and more scar tissue forms, it becomes difficult for the liver to function.

There are many causes of cirrhosis, such as obesity, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, high alcohol consumption, hepatitis B or C infection, autoimmune diseases, cholestasis diseases, and iron or copper overload.

Its symptoms are usually slow to emerge. Early symptoms may include tiredness, weakness, loss of appetite, unexplained weight loss, nausea and sickness, and discomfort in one's upper right abdomen.

With declining liver function, cognitive impairments, confusion, memory loss, sleep disorders, and changes in personality may also develop.

The management of liver cirrhosis is centred on the treatment of the causes and complications. Liver transplantation can be required in some cases.

In order to reduce the risk of cirrhosis, you should eat a balanced diet and maintain a healthy weight. Excess body fat can damage the liver.

Reduction of risk of hepatitis B and C is necessary. Never share needles or engage in unprotected sex. Get hepatitis vaccinations.

You should speak to a doctor if any of the above mentioned symptoms is noticed. Detection in the early stages of the disease makes it easier to treat.

5:2 Intermittent Fasting Diet and Weight Loss – Healthline

Posted: at 5:10 am

Intermittent fasting is a diet plan that switches between fasting and regularly eating.

It works by prolonging the time between eating, so your body finishes burning calories and then begins to burn fat.

This type of eating not only helps you manage your weight but can prevent or even reverse some forms of disease. Experts say many people find intermittent eating more manageable and might stick with it longer than traditional dieting.

While some people use it to lose weight, the biggest benefit is that intermittent fasting seems to help stabilize insulin levels, said Dr. Mahmud Kara, the founder of KaraMD, a website promoting functional medicine.

When you dont eat, your body doesnt have carbohydrates to break down. If there are no carbohydrates, there is no glucose in your blood. And if there is no elevated blood glucose, there is no need for your pancreas to send out insulin, he said.

Intermittent fasting gives your pancreas a break and allows your body the opportunity to balance itself back out, Kara said. Make sure you consider how much you are eating. Its easy to eat too little (or too much).

One of the better-known intermittent fasting diets is the 5:2 plan.

Under this plan, you eat what you want for 5 days each week and then limit yourself to 500 calories on the other 2 days.

In a recent study conducted at Queen Mary University of London, researchers said the results of 5:2 intermittent fasting are similar in effectiveness to traditional dieting.

They also found, however, that people generally preferred intermittent fasting and were more willing to stick with it.

The study included 300 adults with obesity 100 received information on conventional dieting, 100 received information on intermittent fasting, and 100 received information on intermittent fasting along with 6 weeks of support.

The researchers followed participants for a year, noting weight loss. At the end of the study, they noted:

While weight loss was similar in the groups, the number of people who lost weight increased with intermittent fasting.

Researchers said the two groups who used the 5:2 diet had a more positive experience than people using the traditional diet.

This could be an essential factor for doctors recommending weight loss and weight management programs because they might be more likely to remain committed to the diet.

The best news is that there is no one-way to do it, Kara said. Depending on your schedule, personality, and lifestyle, you can pick a fasting protocol that best suits your needs.

No matter which type you choose, its important to remember to eat healthy foods during your chosen eating window, he said. These fasts wont work if you choose meals that are full of processed foods.

Besides the 5:2 plan, other types of intermittent fasting diets include:

There are numerous health benefits of intermittent fasting.

Intermittent fasting can lower cholesterol, reduce liver fat, enhance glucose management, and improve blood pressure, in addition to reducing body weight. Enhanced motor coordination, enhanced endurance, and better sleep have also been linked to intermittent fasting, Shauna Hatcher, MSPH, a certified nutritionist at The National Wellness and Public Health Network, told Healthline.

It can also lead to a longer life, a sharper mind, and protect against type 2 diabetes, heart disease, neurodegenerative disorders caused by age, inflammatory bowel disease, and some types of cancer.

It can take 2 to 4 weeks for your body to adjust to your new way of eating. During this time, you might experience headaches, said Hatcher.

Other possible side effects include digestive issues, such as nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and bloating. Low blood sugar caused by intermittent fasting might make you tired and weak. You might notice sleep disruptions, resulting in fatigue during the day, she said.

Experts say there are some groups of people who should not participate in intermittent fasting:

As helpful as intermittent fasting is, its not for everyone, said Kara. If you have a history of eating disorders or are taking medication that cannot be taken on an empty stomach, be sure to talk with your doctor or nutritionist before starting. The type of food you eat is equally, if not more important, than the time of day or hours you consume the food.

NASA Plans to Retire the Space Station in 2030 and Replace it with Commercially Owned Destinations&#… – Universe Today

Posted: at 5:10 am

While it may seem like the International Space Station is just now fully hitting its stride as far as scientific output and the ability for crew rotations from several different spacecraft, the ISS has been operating with astronauts on board for over 21 years. Knowing the modules and entire physical structure cannot endure the long-term effects of the harsh space environment forever, NASAs Office of the Inspector General has issued a new report outlining the agencys plans to keep the space station in orbit until 2030, and to replace it with one or more commercial space stations.

Anticipating its retirement, NASA has committed to replacing the ISS with one or more commercially owned and operated space destinations, the report says, emphasizing that they hope at least one commercial station could be operational by 2028. This would provide a period of two years of overlap and handover to avoid a substantial gap in on-orbit science investigations. Such a gap would result in the delay of deep space human exploration missions, the report says.

Even though the retirement of the ISS is currently scheduled for 2024, NASA and the international partners have indicated that the ISSs operational life could be extended to 2030.

The Station was designed with a life expectancy of 15 years with a safety factor of two, meaning it could last 30 years after the 1998 launch of its first segments, the report says, adding that NASA is optimistic that the Stations life can be extended to 2030.

But structural wear and tear is becoming evident. NASA and Roscosmos are investigating the cause and long-term impacts of cracks and leaks that were recently discovered in the Stations Service Module Transfer Tunnel, which connects the Service Module to one of eight docking ports on the Station. Causes being explored include structural fatigue, internal damage, external damage, and material defects.

Notably, the report says an updated analysis of the structural longevity of other segments as well should be done because the leaks were caused by cracks that models suggest should not exist. This would suggest the possibility of an earlier-than-projected obsolescence for at least one element of the Station.

The ISS costs about $3 billion a year, roughly a third of NASAs annual human space flight budget. Commercial companies say they can provide brand new facilities for a better price, making for a better investment for NASA.

NASA says the Artemis program, aimed at returning humans to the Moon and ultimately landing astronauts on Mars, is not feasible without continued human health research and technology demonstrations being conducted on the ISS and its eventual replacement.

Therefore, in looking ahead, NASA announced today they have signed agreements with three U.S. companies to develop designs of space stations and other commercial destinations in space. They agency said they want to enable a robust, American-led commercial economy in low-Earth orbit.

The companies are Blue Origin for their Orbital Reef space station design, receiving $130 million, Nanoracks LLC, for $160 million, Northrop Grumman Systems Corporation for $125.6 million.

NASA seeks to maintain an uninterrupted U.S. presence in low-Earth orbit by transitioning from the International Space Station to other platforms, NASA said in a press release. These awards will stimulate U.S. private sector development of commercial, independent space stations that will be available to both government and private-sector customers.

In early 2020, NASA announced a Plan for Commercial LEO Development, which they hope will foster economic development in LEO and to drive innovation. At that time, they announced the selection of Axiom Space of Houston to provide a commercial habitation module for the ISS.

Its great that NASA and the other international partners are planning ahead to keep an operational space station in orbit for the long term. But ultimately, whether in response to an emergency or at the end of its useful service life, NASA acknowledged in the report that there needs to be a plan decommission and deorbit the ISS. This will be technically complex, as well as costly, requiring international participation and a critical decision on timing.

[Herald Interview] Do you have a best friend at the office? Human connection crucial for work efficiency, says behavioral scientist – The Investor

[Herald Interview] Do you have a best friend at the office? Human connection crucial for work efficiency, says behavioral scientist

Jon Levy, behavioral scientist and creator of the Influencers Dinner (Jon Levy)

After COVID-19 forced many aspects of our lives to become more isolated, the world is making a gradual move to return to how we used to be. Commuting to work has resumed and team lunches have been revived, although people still wear their masks and transparent acrylic panels have been erected between people at the tables.

Although South Korea kicked off its living with COVID-19 scheme with eased social distancing rules on Nov. 1, still today many are suffering from social isolation, less contact and a lack of physical touch. Adapting to the changing world, many are feeling lost on how to create more connectedness in their lives.

Jon Levy, a human behavioral scientist from New York, told The Korea Herald the ongoing pandemic has impacted well-being, happiness and longevity because people are missing out on meaningful relations.

People are really stressed out. People are stuck at home, some people are liking it, some arent. And there are many people leaving the company. So companies ask how do we create a work culture that makes people want to be -- how do we develop their relationships -- at work? he said during an interview in Seoul. Levy has worked with global clients including Google, Microsoft and Samsung on work culture crises.

There was an interesting study that looked at (whether employees) have a best friend at work. If you do have a best friend at work, what is that impact on your stay? he said.

Levy said there is a concrete link between having a best friend at work and the amount of effort employees expand in their job, and thats why companies should foster deep and meaningful relationships at work.

According to Gallup, having a best friend at work can be key to engagement and happiness at work.

A 2018 Gallup study showed that women who strongly agree they have a best friend at work are more than twice as likely to be engaged with their work (63 percent) compared with women who say otherwise (29 percent), which leads to the production of higher quality work, better well-being and less likelihood of getting injured on the job.

Levy said working from home due to the pandemic has hurt the process of developing influence, gaining trust and building community.

He said working from home has left people with no transition time.

When I commute, I listen to podcasts, read a book, increase my knowledge and emotionally process my day. If I dont commute anymore, I go straight from frustrating meeting at the end of the day to talking to my family, and thats really tough, he said.

Also for brand new employees, working from home can be frustrating, he said.

Let say Im brand new to the company and the only people I would know is five people Im on calls with. Theres no mentorship, no understanding the company, no necessity to develop other skills, besides specific things Im being told, over the long term. That would leave a huge impact to ones career.

More than a decade ago, Levy created what he calls the Influencers Dinner. At first glance, this secret dining experience may sound like a typical social gathering, just without the names revealed.

Ive hosted 240 dinners across 10 cities in three countries inviting over 2,000 people. I spent most of my adult life convincing people to come to my home, cook me dinner, wash dishes and clean the floor for me, said Levy.

But he had one rule -- people were not allowed to share their names to make everything equal.

If I see a big companys CEO or famous celebrity or Nobel laureate, I may think that Im not so important. So I wanted to make everyone feel just as important so they can connect as a friend, said Levy.

Getting people to cook together is closely related to the Ikea effect, according to Levy.

There is a weird human behavior characteristic called Ikea effect. We care more about Ikea furniture because we had to assemble it. Anything we put more effort into, we care about it more. People cook together, they care about their food and people, he said.

The secret is, we give people a very limited amount of time and a project to do -- too hard to do one person by himself -- that both have to put in effort. What happens is you feel connected to each other.

According to Levy, the art and science of creating deep and meaningful connections with anyone, regardless of their stature or celebrity, lies in the power of community.

Joy shared is double, suffering shared is half -- each of us have different skill sets and expertise. Nobody is self-made anymore. Expecting us to do things alone doesnt work. People have to depend on others, said Levy. Their wisdoms, experience, skills and talents, have a profound impact on us.

Innokin’s Why Smoke? Vaping Campaign Hits the Streets of London – Business Wire

Posted: at 5:09 am

LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Innokin presents its "Why Smoke?" campaign in London, featuring branded buses, vans, and projection displays on buildings throughout the city.

Innokin is proud to create a vaping awareness campaign in the UK for the first time in two years. The "Why Smoke?" campaign is meant to make us think about our habits, even just for a moment. The campaign aims to inform smokers that there is an accessible, less harmful option to traditional cigarettes.

Advertising vaping products is a challenging task. There are many regulatory considerations, and this can make it very difficult to deliver a compelling message. Innokin is investing in vaping advocacy through a combination of traditional and innovation-led channels, intending to start an honest conversation about tobacco harm reduction.

Innokins "Why Smoke?" campaign began November 26th. Mobile billboards traveled throughout north and central London for four days, stopping in prominent areas to reach thousands of people each day. The mobile billboards introduce Innokins message to people all over the city.

On November 28th, large mobile projections displayed impactful messages on iconic London buildings over two days. The projection locations were selected based on high foot traffic in densely populated areas. The projections are a mix of vaping awareness messages and promotional displays for the MVP Pod, Innokins newest vaping device.

On November 29th, Innokins traditional media campaign began. The "Why Smoke?" message, along with promotional displays for the brand new MVP Pod, appear on five-hundred buses throughout the British capital for two weeks. Garnering the general public's attention is crucial to helping smokers transition to vaping.

Innokin has run promotional campaigns in the UK before. Previously, the vaping giant has partnered with the EFL to promote displays in football stadiums throughout the country and created two successful bus campaigns. Innokin is determined to help millions of smokers, not just in the UK but worldwide. Making cigarettes a thing of the past continues to be the firms priority. "Why Smoke?" is just the beginning of Innokins mission to create a smoke-free future.

Netherlands’ Protests Highlighting The Importance of Vape Flavours – Vaping Post

Posted: at 5:09 am

Earlier this year, a public consultation about the proposal to ban flavours was meant to close on the 19th of January, but had been extended to the 2nd of February. A statement published on the Netherlands Government website, had revealed that the consultation was extended due to popular demand.

An overwhelming majority of the responses, 98.54%, opposed the ban.

The WVA had already organized two light installations to protest the ban. The Covid-friendly light shows were projected onto landmark buildings in the Hague, starting at 18.00 and ending before curfew.

Subsequently, on the morning that members of the Health Committee met to discuss the ban last Summer, the WVA held another protest outside the House of Representatives. Vapers and vape shop owners handed out samples of disgusting tasting ice creams, in a bid to remind MPs and the public the importance of flavours and how they are vital in encouraging smokers to switch.

When this proposal was put to public consultation it received one of the biggest ever responses, with 98% of respondents opposing the ban. The message to the State Secretary was clear vaping flavours help smokers quit, and there is huge opposition to his ridiculous plan. Vapers are outraged that a caretaker Government would continue pushing for this proposed ban after such a loud and clear message, said Director of the World Vapers Alliance, Michael Landl.

A flavour ban for vaping would be a public health disaster for the Netherlands. It is incredible that a caretaker government would try to introduce such deeply controversial legislation, that would have such negative consequences for so many, before a new Government is formed, WVA Director Michael Landl concluded.

Reflecting Landls comments, a recent study looking into the flavour ban set in the US city of San Francisco, reported alarming findings. Titled, The Impact of a Comprehensive Tobacco Flavour Ban in San Francisco Among Young Adults, the current study was conducted with the aim of determining the impact of the ban on tobacco use behavior. A sample of 247 San Francisco residents were surveyed about their e-cigarette and tobacco use, before and after the flavour ban.

The study found that while the ban did lead to a decline in e-cigarettes and cigars sales, it sadly also caused a spike in smoking rates. Additionally, the researchers found that the measure was not enforced properly and 65% of participants reported being able to obtain flavoured products in multiple ways.

These findings suggest that comprehensive local flavor bans, by themselves, cannot sharply reduce the availability or use of flavored tobacco products among residents. Nevertheless, local bans can still significantly reduce overall e-cigarette use and cigar smoking but may increase cigarette smoking, concluded the study.

FCTC COP9: WHO Reported Dropping Tobacco Use But Data Show Otherwise FCTC COP9: WHO Reported Dropping Tobacco Use But Data Show Otherwise – Vaping…

While the Climate-related COP26 allowed the attendance of 2,360 NGOs, the FCTC COP9 just allowed 21 handpicked NGOs.

The COP9 virtual conference was (as in previous years) closed off to the public and only accessible to a handful of selected media representatives. While the Climate-related COP26 allowed the attendance of 2,360 NGOs, the FCTC COP9 just allowed 21 handpicked NGOs. Sadly, none of these represented populations who will be affected by the decisions taken at the conference.

The WHO organizes the conference, and is renowned for remaining staunchly opposed to the use of safer nicotine products, despite the significant independent and international scientific evidence indicating their efficacy for smoking cessation. In its most recent report, Fighting The Last War: The WHO and International Tobacco Control, the Global State of Tobacco Harm Reduction argues that tragically, the WHOs tobacco control policy is frozen in time, costing millions their lives.

As the WHO publishes its latest Global tobacco trends report, it trumpets falling tobacco use. But the global health institution is celebrating failure. To see numbers reduce from 1.32 billion to 1.30 billion tobacco users over five years cannot be argued as evidence of a successful strategy. Eight million lives are lost every year due to smoking-related disease. What we are seeing is evidence of a dereliction of public health duty, says the report.

With modern safer nicotine products, these technological disruptors such as vaping devices, nicotine pouches, heated tobacco products, we have the means at our disposal to end smoking and to end it soon. Global State of Tobacco Harm Reduction estimates put the number of users of harm reduction products at 100 million worldwide. Many smokers are put off from switching though, as a direct consequence of the distortion of public health messaging from the WHO and other tobacco control organisations funded by US philanthropic interests that seem to care little for the health of current smokers.

Harm reduction is the third pillar of the tobacco control strategy named in the FCTC (1), along with supply and demand reduction. We urge the WHO to integrate harm reduction into its approach to tobacco control, as it already does for drug use and HIV/AIDS prevention, and to address current deficits in the WHOs MPOWER strategy by enabling it to become EMPOWERED adding Engage with affected communities, Encourage smokers to switch to safer nicotine products and Deliver accurate information about safer alternatives.'(2)
