Covid-19: How New Zealand’s vaccine restrictions compare to those overseas – Stuff.co.nz
Posted: November 23, 2021 at 5:06 pm
After months of restrictions, Aucklanders will be out of lockdown and able to travel outside the region in four weeks time but things will look vastly different for those who are vaccinated against Covid-19 and those who arent.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced that only fully vaccinated people or those who have had a negative test will be permitted to leave Auckland when the border lifts on December 15.
Before that happens, the country will have transitioned into the traffic light framework which introduces further restrictions for unvaccinated New Zealanders, following a Cabinet review on November 29.
MARK TAYLOR/Stuff
New Zealand has high vaccination coverage, but those who are unvaccinated will see their freedoms shrink in the coming weeks and months.
The introduction of vaccine passes will see unvaccinated people unable to visit bars, restaurants and many venues. Even at the lowest level in the framework, restrictions will apply if vaccine certificates are not used.
READ MORE:* Covid-19: Experts say vaccination push needed as virus 'will travel for summer'* Covid-19: Government to open Auckland border on December 15, allowing travel for Christmas* Covid-19: Freedoms shrinking for unvaccinated* Covid-19: A 'freedom day' for Auckland nears, the spread of Covid-19 elsewhere looms
New Zealand has high vaccination coverage: 91 per cent of eligible New Zealanders have had their first dose, and 82 per cent are fully vaccinated.
We know there are some still making the decision over when to be vaccinated but we need to make decisions now that will protect them and others, Ardern said on Wednesday.
When the country moves into the traffic light system, New Zealand will not be alone in restricting freedoms to those who have not been vaccinated.
Queensland, in Australia, will bar unvaccinated people from restaurants, cafes, pubs and sports stadiums from mid-December.
In Wales, an NHS Covid Pass which shows the person is either fully vaccinated or has had a negative test result within 48 hours is required to enter nightclubs, cinemas, theatres, and large indoor/outdoor events.
And in Singapore, those unvaccinated by choice will no longer be able to get free treatment for Covid-19.
Just this week, Austria placed about two million people who have not been fully vaccinated against Covid-19 in lockdown for at least 10 days, as the country faces a surge in cases.
Stuff
Vaccine passes were introduced in New Zealand on Wednesday, and will soon be instrumental in the way many of us live our lives.
Unvaccinated people (over the age of 12) are only allowed to leave home for limited reasons, such as working or buying food.
About 65 per cent of Austria's population is fully vaccinated one of the lowest rates in Western Europe, the BBC reported.
Parts of Germany are also introducing similar restrictions for unvaccinated people.
In Saxony, only people who can prove they have been vaccinated or have recovered from Covid will be allowed entry to non-essential shops and facilities; and in North Rhine-Westphalia unvaccinated people are excluded from all non-essential facilities and events, the Guardian reported on Tuesday.
Ross Giblin/Stuff
University of Otago (Wellington) professor Michael Baker said a person's choice not to be vaccinated affects the health of others, and supported restrictions to mitigate risk.
Epidemiologist and University of Otago (Wellington) professor Michael Baker said there were a number of positives with the traffic light system, not least that it sends an unequivocal message people must be vaccinated if they want to have certain freedoms.
He likened it to passive smoking: sitting next to someone in a restaurant, plane or movie theatre who lights up a cigar can put you at an increased risk. The same is true for sitting next to an unvaccinated person, even if you are vaccinated.
Baker said restrictions for unvaccinated people made sense from a public health and ethics perspective just like banning smoking indoors made sense.
Your choice not to be vaccinated affects other peoples health.
Restrictions for unvaccinated people under the impending traffic light system put a damper on that behaviour, while also nudging others to get vaccinated to be able to partake in greater freedoms.
Despite that, Baker believed the move to dissolve Auckland's border in a months time was premature.
The risk of Aucklanders to the rest of the country is higher than that posed by most people coming into managed isolation and quarantine (MIQ) from overseas, he said, but a different bar had been set for them.
Ricky Wilson/Stuff
Auckland's boundary will be lifted from December 15, with restrictions on who can leave the region.
He noted it was really tough to get this right, but said we wont have the vaccination barrier intact by the time this diaspora happens out of Auckland.
Baker expected Covid-19 would reach every corner of the North Island by the end of summer.
That created a moral quandary of sorts, given the worrying unevenness and holes in the countrys vaccination coverage.
Rates for Mori are 20 per cent lower than the national average, and as Mori made up the majority of cases, they would be the group getting sick and dying, Baker said.
Even with high vaccination coverage overall, we're seeing something we never wanted to see, a very uneven pandemic.

Transportation Strategies to Optimize Freight Spend | ARC Advisory – ARC Advisory Group
Posted: at 5:04 pm
Overview
Managing freight spend is crucial in todays volatile and COVID-constrained market. Freight spend covers the gamut from route optimization, rate negotiation, warehouse distribution, carrier, and vendor management, to tariffs and regulatory compliance. By evaluating these factors, shippers can gain insight into their freight operations, allowing them to establish accurate baselines, identify hidden costs, and spot areas where transportation spend could be reduced.
As freight transportation continues to change, service providers are using technology to improve and meet the dynamics of the supply chain. Thethree traditional methodsof freight transportation are the use of a transportation management system (TMS), transportation execution system (TES), and managed transportation services (MTS). Ultimately, it comes down to whether shippers want to manage their freight spend in-house or outsource it.
The most common application for in-house management is a TMS. A TMS offers optimization capabilities across multiple modes to improve service levels and reduce freight spend. The alternatives to TMS include TES and MTS. TES solutions are mode specific and lack optimization capabilities, but for shippers with simpler transportation requirements, it is often all they need.
Large shippers with complex needs may turn to managed transportation services providers to plan and execute their loads. These MTS providers may use an in-house developed TMS. Or, if they use an off-the-shelf TMS, they may get a volume discount. In some instances, they may not use a TMS at all in managed trans deals, although these providers lack a significant presence in the market.
For each of these options, software and service providers need to set a clear path for success. Below are some transportation strategies for success for suppliers of TMS, TES, and MTS.
Software-as-a-service (SaaS) solutions are becoming the norm in the industry, and this does not apply only to smaller companies that are targeting Tier 2 and Tier 3 customers.A robust SaaS solution offers the same features and functionality as an on-premise solution and can be deployed quickly and cost-efficiently. This is especially true during the pandemic when more employees are continuing to work remotely. This includes job functions that have historically been performed on premise; a SaaS solution enables rapid updates to be pushed out to all employees without the need for time-consuming upgrades and configurations.
The last mile is the most difficult and most expensive part of the supply chain journey. The growth of e-commerce and omni-channel should represent an opportunity for TMS suppliers. Currently, it does for only a few providers of fleet management. There are several reasons for this:
The pandemic has changed the outlook for direct-to-consumer commerce, and a TMS is now a critical component of this strategy. There is still room to compete in the last mile, but suppliers need to think creatively to capitalize on this opportunity.
For TES providers, the growth of e-commerce is only going to make the last mile more important. Better ETA and better visibility into when orders will arrive are a requirement.
Real-time visibility solutions are more important than ever.Electronic data interchange (EDI) solutions have proven deficient in providing robust visibility. TMS suppliers need to partner with transportation visibility companies or build their own solution.

What went wrong with The Morning Shows second season? – Yahoo Entertainment
Posted: at 5:04 pm
Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston in The Morning Show
Apple TV Plus The Morning Show, an ostensible prestige drama, has always been out of step with reality. The debut season struggled with its sprawling narrative about the #MeToo movement before finding its footing in the second half. The sophomore run, however, goes off the rails almost immediately, as the show opts to depict the pandemic through the lens of its characters unrelenting self-interest.
TMS bumpy execution doesnt reflect the seriousness with which the show and and its protagonists hold themselves. This ongoing vanity problem is best embodied by morning news anchor Alex Levy (Jennifer Aniston). She contracts the COVID-19 virus in the unhinged season-two finale, titled Fever (released on November 19). As she deals with physical and emotional distress, Alex is wooed by the networks newly launched, but already failing streaming service to appear in a special about how shes coping with the diagnosis. And how is she coping? In her lavish and spacious skyscraper apartment, of course.
The writing is so tactless that Alex is touted as a relatable everywoman, the kind who can guide viewers coming to terms with a global lockdown, by her producer Chip Black (Mark Duplass). Yes, lets trust the judgment of a man whos just lied about testing positive to be in the same room as Alex when she goes live.
Mark Duplass and Jennifer Aniston in The Morning Show
Alexs million-dollar salary and easy access to healthcare make her the polar opposite of the general public, who dont have the same resources to fight a deadly disease. Of course, Alex and everyone in her orbit refuse to acknowledge that. To make matters worse, her streaming debut turns into an angry rant as she lectures viewers who may want to cancel her, assuming that takes precedence for the American people instead of worrying about job losses, medical costs, and you know, general survival during a pandemic. Alexs self-centeredness would be comical if it were at all self-aware and not just appalling.
Story continues
Season one was uneven but compelling, leading up to a finale in which Alex and new on-air partner Bradley Jackson (Reese Witherspoon) expose their network for being complicit in covering up the crimes of Mitch Kessler (Steve Carell), Alexs former co-host who sexually assaulted several women during his tenure on their show. Yet season two blatantly backtracks on this seemingly progressive story by focusing on Mitch striving to be a good person while quarantining in an opulent Italian villa. Who thought we needed a redemption arc for this Matt Lauer-inspired character?
Throughout season two, Alex is hailed as a feminist hero, but TMS undermines this development as she mourns her doomed relationship with Mitch. She spends much of season two worried the public will turn against her upon learning of an upcoming book that reveals her consensual affair with Mitch. She even travels all the way to Italy in episode seven, La Amara Vita, to make sure he signs a letter falsely claiming the two never had sex, though its hard to believe anyone would take his word. But later in the episode, Alex and Mitch get emotional reminiscing about their bond. She then goes on to defend his character after his death. Her inconsistent arc is the show torpedoing whatever commentary it tried to deliver in its first season.
TMS never painted Alex as a saint; shes always been a complex woman with her own demons. But the writing for her this time around is shockingly stupid, and involves her saying the word cancel multiple times per episode. Turn it into a drinking game, maybe itll make the show bearable.
Steve Carell and Jennifer Aniston in The Morning Show
Alexs vanity is endemic to the broader show; almost every other character treads down an equally pompous path. Network CEO Cory Ellison (Billy Crudup, delivering the only worthwhile performance) believes he is in a battle for the soul of the universe, when all hes doing is running a greedy corporation. By the end of Fever, hes tangled up in a mucky love triangle with Bradley, whom he purposely outed to the tabloids a few episodes earlier, and her girlfriend, Laura Peterson (Julianna Margulies). Chip has obviously lost his mind as he voluntarily puts himself in danger by lying to Alex about getting COVID just to be close to her and further prop up her ego.
TV shows about rich and egotistical characters who believe theyre the center of the universe can be entertaining and damning: Succession, Veep, and Arrested Development are prime examples. Unfortunately for TMS, the writers and performers havent figured out if the show is a weighty drama about the industry its depicting or a satirical takedown. By aimlessly wavering between both, the Apple TV+ series has become an unenjoyable farce.

‘The cup is half full at the moment’ for the travel industry: Moody’s SVP – Yahoo Finance
Posted: at 5:03 pm
Though the travel industry is seeing a steady recovery as the number of daily air travelers continues to rise, uncertainty looms with COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations seeing an uptick as well. According to Moody's (MCO) Senior Vice President Jonathan Root, however, things are still looking up for the sector going into the new year.
I'm not confident in specific predictability, but I think the read through is positive, Root told Yahoo Finance Live. We're sticking with our positive outlook for the industry. We're looking at it as the cup is half full at the moment. And it's going to get fuller through the holidays and as we approach spring, notwithstanding that infection rate trends are up right now.
Indeed, the rising infection rate along with the highest Thanksgiving gas prices in eight years is not discouraging upcoming holiday travel. And gas for cars isnt the only fuel that is seeing surging prices jet fuel prices have recently risen past pre-pandemic levels as well, presenting a risk to airlines.
We think the airlines can be profitable with higher jet fuel and where the price of Brent oil (BZ=F) is today, Root said. You know, the challenge is we're coming through this is the recovery phase. So if we were beyond the pandemic normal activity levels, we'd be less concerned for sure.
All in all, Root believes that the threat of government lockdowns making it more difficult to travel still poses a risk for a slowdown in the travel. But as long as the U.S. allows non-citizens to arrive, he said, growth will likely continue. According to Root, domestic TSA screening numbers are currently at 80% of 2019 levels even with limited international travel, suggesting strength in the U.S. airline industry.
We think behavior is probably changing as well, he added. With more vaccinations and, you know, the medicines coming, that should be an influencing factor that maybe can keep the restrictions low enough to allow travel to happen.
Story continues
In the period since Nov. 8, Root said that a similar meaningful uptick in daily airport security screenings has not been seen internationally. However, he believes that this may come with the holiday season as people reconnect with family.
I can't predict which government may become more restrictive in what time frame. And that is the key for the international recovery, Root said. We do feel that there is still strong pent-up demand, not only for leisure, but for business travel and even in international long-haul travel.

What is Tor (Browser) & How does it work? | CyberNews
Posted: at 5:01 pm
Tor (formerly an acronym for The Onion Router) is often touted as a way to browse the web anonymously. From human rights activists evading oppressive governments to drug dealers selling through online marketplaces, Tor is a popular way to gain significantly more anonymity than you would normally have online. At the same time, Tor isnt perfect, so it can provide a false sense of security if used incorrectly.
In this article, well look at what Tor is and isnt. Then, well take a look at how it works, how it compares to VPN services, and how to stay safe. Youll learn all about Tor and be ready to use it with confidence, knowing that you wont make any beginner mistakes that would compromise your anonymity.
Using the Tor Browser is similar to using any other web browser. Although the process of starting up the browser differs slightly from Chrome or Firefox (Tor must configure a connection to the Tor network before the browser can start), actually browsing the web with Tor is pretty intuitive.
The main difference is that when you browse the web with Tor, your real IP address and other system information is obscured from the websites and services you're visiting. Additionally, it also hides what you're doing from your Internet Service Provider.
The primary uses of Tor are the following:
Using Tor offers a number of privacy and anonymity protections over directly connecting to a website. That said, it also presents some challenges.
The concepts underpinning Tor namely, onion routing were developed by the United States government in the 1990s. It was originally designed to protect the communications of US intelligence agencies across the Internet. The original code for Tor was released under a free and open-source software license by the United States Naval Research Laboratory, allowing other people and organizations to contribute to the project.
Since 2006, a nonprofit called The Tor Project has been responsible for maintaining Tor and the Tor Browser. Financial support comes from corporations like Google, organizations such as Human Rights Watch, and many others.
There are two things people may mean when they say Tor: the networking system and the Tor Browser.
To anonymize Internet usage, Tor routes traffic through multiple randomly-chosen relay servers before accessing the destination website. There are over 7,000 of these servers, which mostly belong to volunteers. The request is encrypted multiple times, so the relay servers only know the previous relay and the next relay, but not the request contents or the full circuit. The network request finally exits the Tor network at an exit node. From the websites perspective, you are browsing directly from the exit node.
Tor hidden services, which will be covered below, are accessed in a slightly different way from standard websites they use .onion domain names and are inaccessible from the regular web.
To actually use Tor to anonymize your communications, you run the Tor Browser on your computer. The Tor Browser is a modified version of Mozilla Firefox that connects to the internet via the Tor network. In addition to the functionality necessary to use Tor, the Tor Browser also bundles a number of extensions that help users maintain their privacy. For example, the NoScript extension is bundled with Tor out of the box, meaning that users have to manually approve individual JavaScript files before they can runhelping to protect against fingerprinting and browser security exploits.
Although Tor is frequently used by privacy-conscious people and those looking to avoid surveillance, it isnt perfect. Simple mistakes can make hours of meticulous privacy protection useless, so it pays to be especially careful when browsing with Tor. Here are some things you should look out for:
Even though Tor encrypts data between the users computer and servers in the Tor network and within the Tor network, it does not encrypt the final part of the connection between the exit node and the destination server. As a result, it is possible for a government or internet service provider to eavesdrop on traffic between the exit node and destination servers. Since the full list of Tor exit nodes is publicly available, any unencrypted traffic leaving exit nodes is likely to be monitored closely.
Another security concern is when the entry relay and exit relay both exist on the same Internet autonomous system (AS) like if the same network operator owns both IP addresses. If this is the case, it is possible for that network operator to use timing-based statistical techniques to determine that a particular network request originated from a particular computer. This technique is difficult to execute, so its usually only possible for governments to pull off. Additionally, it can be expensive, so it is not usually a concern except for high-value targets.
Other signals may also be used to fingerprint users. If you happen to be browsing a compromised website using Tor with JavaScript enabled (or the website youre browsing uses compromised third-party JavaScript), its possible for the attacker to determine who you are based on your mouse movements. Most people move their mouse in a distinct way which can be used to correlate a Tor browsing session with a regular, non-Tor browsing session.
As with regular web browsing, it is always possible to have your web browser compromised as a result of a security bug. While modern browsers, including the Firefox-based Tor Browser, include very good exploit protection, the kinds of adversaries that target Tor users also stockpile browser exploits that browser vendors are completely unaware of (known as zero-day bugs).
Although most security considerations for Tor are only applicable to the most paranoid users, its still a good idea to follow some safety guidelines. Anyone using Tor is automatically enough of a surveillance target that protecting your security is important.
Tor hidden services, onion services, or Tor websites are websites that are only accessible from within the Tor network. All hidden service domain names end in .onion and consist of a very long of seemingly-random characters. Collectively, Tor hidden services are sometimes referred to as the dark web.
These websites are not indexed by and won't appear on search engines like Google. Instead, a number of user-created directories of hidden services allow you to find the sites youre looking for.
The term dark web generally evokes a mental image of criminals selling illegal services through sketchy Tor-based marketplaces. Although much of the news surrounding Tor and Tor hidden services makes it seem as though using them is like walking down a dark alley at night, there are plenty of perfectly legitimate uses for hidden services as well.
Sites like Facebook, DuckDuckGo, and The New York Times run versions of their sites with .onion addresses for journalists and activists living under oppressive regimes.
Some extremely privacy-conscious individuals make their blogs or websites exclusively accessible through Tor hidden services so that their real-life identity cannot be determined.
The US government has steadily improved its technologies for catching and prosecuting criminals who use Tor for illegal purposes. As mentioned above, Tor is vulnerable to timing attacks and other types of advanced compromises that require government-like resources. For that reason, a government with sufficient resources can deanonymize some Tor requests if they control the right internet service providers (which is almost always true of the American government).
While using Tor itself is perfectly legal, there is plenty of illegal activity involving Tor, so be sure to watch out when visiting hidden services so that you dont accidentally end up on a sketchy .onion site. If you decide to access the Dark or the Deep web, do it in a safe way.
Virtual private network (VPN) services are frequently marketed as a way to improve privacy or gain anonymity. In reality, VPN services can be hit-and-miss when it comes to privacy. Some are certainly better at protecting data than Tor, whereas others will compromise your privacy more than not using one at all.
VPNs are point-to-point tunnels. Network traffic travels in an encrypted tunnel from the users computer all the way to the VPN providers network and is forwarded onto the destination server. In that sense, they are similar to Tor.
The most problematic aspect of VPN service marketing is the no-logging policy." Most VPN providers advertise that they do not log how their services are used, so users can feel confident using the service with no legal ramifications. However, there are few ways this claim can be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. So if you do end up choosing a VPN for privacy, it's best to go with one that has had its no-logs policy tested in the wild due to some police investigation, or at least one that has had the infrastructure audited by a trustworthy, independent third-party.
The biggest advantages of VPNs over Tor include much better connection speeds for downloading videos and other large files. Also, with a VPN, you can choose the server your data is routed through, or at least the country in which that server is located. Finally, it is far easier to use a VPN systemwide than it is to use Tor outside of Tor Browser.
Whether youre using Tor or a VPN service, be careful not to leak your actual IP address through browser plugins or by logging into an account that would nullify your anonymity.

Yes. In most of the world, using Tor is perfectly legal. However, there are plenty of illegal activities that can be facilitated with Tor hidden services, so Tor usage may be seen as suspicious by many governments or internet service providers.
Tor Browser, the recommended way to use Tor, uses DuckDuckGo by default. That said, you can use any other search engine you choosebut note that DuckDuckGo uses the least tracking of any major search engine.
Yes. While Tor obscures your IP (so long as you dont accidentally reveal itsee the next section) and Tor Browser includes a variety of anonymizing features that make tracking harder, you still have to be very careful to avoid leaking information that could be used to track you. Dont log into accounts that you use with other browsers or do anything else that would make your browsing session personally identifiable.
Yes, assuming that you dont accidentally leak it. Websites you visit while using Tor will see the IP address of the Tor exit node you are using, not your actual IP. However, browser plugins and torrenting applications can easily leak your actual IP address if you arent careful. Additionally, there are a number of other ways to track users aside from IP addresses. Be sure not to reveal your identity in any other way, like signing into an account you use from another connection. Tor Browser includes a variety of tracking prevention features that help prevent unique browser and device characteristics from being used to fingerprint you across the web. No matter what, vigilance is always necessary to protect your anonymity.
Not reliably. The Chinese governments Great Firewall prevents connections to much of the outside world, including practically all parts of the Tor network. Using Tor in China is significantly more complicated than in most other parts of the world; it generally requires tunneling traffic to another country and then using Tor over that connection. If you already have a VPN that works for getting access to websites that are blocked in mainland China, you may be able to use Tor through that VPN, which can improve your privacy significantly.
If you want to protect your privacy and anonymity as much as possible while browsing the web, Tor and the Tor Browser may be a good choice. Tor is a widely used and well-studied way to avoid surveillance and censorship from internet service providers and government agencies. It also offers access to .onion hidden services, which are used for avoiding oppressive regimes (and, occasionally, less-noble activities as well).
To use Tor effectively, you must be mindful of a variety of security and privacy concerns, as laid out earlier in this article. Depending on your threat model which potential threats you want to protect against you may need to take aggressive measures to keep your browsing anonymous, some of which can make browsing inconvenient.
Virtual private network (VPN) services are marketed similarly to Tor. However, while they offer significantly higher speeds, their protection against surveillance depends on the specific service provider.
In conclusion, Tor is a powerful tool that must be wielded smartly. It can allow you to avoid all kinds of digital oppressionjust like journalists and human rights activists do around the world every day. If used incorrectly, it will only provide a false sense of security. By understanding and following the recommendations made in this article, youll be ready to make use of Tor correctly and in an effective manner.
