Skyryse to supply advanced flight automation to Robinson Helicopter – Vertical Magazine

Posted: at 7:25 am

Estimated reading time 4 minutes, 41 seconds.

Robinson Helicopter Company plans to integrate an advanced flight automation system from Skyryse into its R66 helicopter, making it possible for almost anyone to safely control the aircraft with touchscreen tablets and a joystick.

According to Skyryse, Robinson is one of five aircraft original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to establish partnerships with the Los Angeles-based technology company for itsFlightOS product, which will enable anyone to fly as safely as the best pilots on their best day.

Although Skyryse didnt reveal the others, it said that the OEMs collectively produce over half of the worlds new general aviation aircraft.

The general aviation industry is about to change forever, Skyryse founder and CEO Dr. Mark Groden declared in a press release. Were on a mission to empower anyone to fly anywhere in any aircraft as safely as the most experienced pilots in the world. Our technology will usher in a new era of mobility, from fighting fires in remote areas to relieving traffic in crowded cities.

Skyryse said its fly-by-wire hardware and software package can be integrated into any aircraft. It has been conducting flight testing in helicopters including a Robinson R44, which actor Jon Hamm is shown flying in the companyslatest video. Although Hamm is shown controlling the aircraft with Apple iPads, Skyryse toldTechCrunchthat its finished product will use aviation certified touchscreens.

According to Skyryse, its technology protects the pilot from exiting the flight envelope, is equipped with terrain and obstacle avoidance, and can safely manage the aircraft through emergencies, including power failures. Last month, the company said, a Skyryse-enabled helicopter autonomously entered an autorotation and controlled the descent while gliding to earth without engine power or pilot intervention.

This week, the companyannounced US$200 million in Series B funding, bringing its total capital raised to date to $250 million. The Series B round was led by Fidelity Management & Research Company and Monashee Investment Management, with participation by a number of new and existing investors.

Skyryse has also brought on two new advisors to help guide its Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification process, including former FAA head Michael Huerta and former National Transportation Safety Board chairman Chris Hart. Both highlighted the potential for Skyryses technology to achieve dramatic gains in aviation safety.

Said Hart: This is a breakthrough that the aviation industry has been waiting for to make air transportation accessible to everyone at safety levels that were previously attainable only on commercial airlines.

Treacle Walker by Alan Garner review the book of a lifetime – The Guardian

Posted: at 7:22 am

Alan Garners novels are usually separated into his wildly successful books aimed at children The Weirdstone of Brisingamen, Elidor, The Owl Service and The Moon of Gomrath and his adult writing The Stone Book Quartet, Thursbitch and Strandloper, which are more difficult and quixotic, at least thematically (Garner is always an author of supremely clear and readable prose). I was speaking at an event with Ruth Ozeki and Karen Joy Fowler recently and, having mentioned Garner in my talk, was surprised that neither of them had read or even heard of him. They asked me where to begin and I suggested the wonderful, time-collapsing Red Shift, largely because I feel like it contains the best of each of Garners worlds: the magic of his childrens fiction and the emotional and philosophical complexity of his adult work.

Garners latest novel, Treacle Walker, also belongs in this hybrid space. It, too, is concerned with time. Indeed, it seems as though the subject of time is the theme that underpins much of his later work how we experience it, how we might refigure or alter our relation to it. Time is ignorance, reads the books epigraph, from Carlo Rovelli, and the novel is essentially a response to this idea, seeking to ask how we would experience the world if we were able to step out of the straitjacket of time. Garner lives in a medieval medicine house on a site that has been inhabited for 10,000 years and is a stones throw from the Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire. It should perhaps not surprise us that, again, he takes time as his subject.

Joe, our hero, is a child living a strange and circumscribed existence. He has been poorly, he says, and wears a patch to correct a lazy eye. His parents are not in evidence, and he measures out the days by watching the passing of Noony, the train, through the valley below. One day a rag-and-bone man appears, named Treacle Walker, and offers Joe a cup and a stone in exchange for an old pair of pyjamas and a lambs shoulder bone. The cup has Joes name written upon it, the stone is inscribed with the picture of a horse. This is classic Garner territory: obscure but resonant objects, a present that feels wedded to a mythical past, a questioning child seeking to unravel the mysteries of an off-kilter world, a landscape freighted with meaning.

Joe wanders out into the marshy wood behind his house where he meets Thin Amren, a naked man with copper-brown skin and a hood made of leather. This bog-man informs Joe that his lazy eye is the result of the glamourie a gift that enables him to see time collapsed, to perceive the eternal in the now. Joes adventures see him drawn into the mirror-world of a comic book, fighting alongside Kit the Ancient Brit against Whizzy Wizard and the Brit Bashers. Hes aided in these battles by the visits of the genial Treacle Walker, with his green violet eyes and face at once old and young, like them knacky postcards that change when you look.

The riotous energy of seemingly throwaway comics is shown to be in communion with the power of myth and both express truths found in the most cutting-edge science. This is a book about quantum physics as well as ancient lore. Garner has always suggested that there is essentially just one story, and this novel, published in his 87th year, contains all the exuberance and eccentricity, all the deep thought and resounding mythology of his best work. At the end of his life, Philip Roth wrote the extraordinary Nemesis, a book that felt like a conversation between the author and his younger self, an attempt to express in a single novel the concerns of a lifetime. Treacle Walker does something similar, cramming into its 150-odd pages more ideas and imagination than most authors manage in their whole careers.

Conscious reality: Seizing the future – The Himalayan Times

Posted: at 7:22 am

It is a fact that mind and matter, energy and human consciousness are intimately intertwined. Add to it the simple idea of vacuum, or empty space, as the real energy field, out of which all perceivable matter is formed, apart from various levels of manifestation, and you enter into the 'get-up-and-go' fields in which all human thought and instinct exist. The idea holds a remarkable premise for the unifying concept of the formative human mind as the universe's hidden creation mechanism a sublime strategy that links energy, mind and consciousness.

It goes without saying that Albert Einstein's landmark theory of relativity forms the two major branches of physics. However, the portrait of physical reality that they offer appears ironic, despite the fact that both modern physics and cosmology perceive physical reality and the universe in a frame as relevant and contextual as any that science espouses.

Picture this: the wave-particle duality, a paradox that is central to either fold. Besides, one could relate to experiments on neutrons aimed at a target via a 'pair of slits' in a screen. They show definitive interference patterns, even when individual neutrons are bombarded sparingly.

Some physicists have produced counter-interpretations, too the spacetime description of micro-events, including the possibility of a deeper understanding of physical reality.

In other words, the motion of a particle is affected, not only by the usual classical potential, but also by quantum potential having dramatic effects for extremely small particles.

Advances in cosmology now explain gravitation, for instance, in the context of time-space continuum.

They also provide for the possibility of a universe rapidly expanding from the initial big bang billions of years ago, to be followed by the big crunch. According to Einstein's theory of relativity, stars apparently disintegrate back into their own gravitational fields a black hole, or small area, of extremely high density, while incorporating a singularity with zero volume, where gravitation is so intense that no light can escape from a black hole. Today, there's definitive, or quantified, evidence for the existence of black holes.

Not long ago, it was fanciful to surmise what had precisely happened before the big bang. Today,

we are linking ideas from relativity and quantum theory.

This has led to a new possibility, too postulating theories like inflationary cosmology, which provide fairly plausible pictures of possible events that may have happened before the big bang. Yet, a huge challenge remains of finding the true unification of general relativity and quantum theory.

The celebrated thinker and philosopher Johann Wolfgang von Goethe put it aptly, "Everything factual is already theory". It is ditto for our scientific advances, including the emergence of the hologram, a laser-produced picture, in its all new avatar. All the same, we have got to keep our fingers crossed and look excitedly at 'science-in-waiting'.

This is simply because we are quickly moving into a different epoch the 'age of new technology', whose origins already exist. This is yet again not scientific dazzle, but a realistic metaphor that bids fair to a primal, also resourceful, embodiment of possibility.

It would be interesting to highlight that the hologram of the future may not be just about patterns though one which we perceive as the configuration of wholes, or elements, that compose them. "It will be recognised," as complexity specialists Howard Sherman and Ron Schultz explain, "that within every level of synthesis the patterns are the same."

In other words, the hologram will not be as composite with all its shades of commonplace essentialities.

Because, we are all aware of one inescapable fact. Anything that is new, in our rapidly changing world, is often thought to be immeasurable a 'fantasy' without well-defined constructs. Yet, the fact is you were, for instance, not a computer geek when you started using the gadget on your own. Now, you can't do without it.

There's more to our whole, new world of thoughtful advance than what meets the eye. Because, we are on the verge of breaking major scientific stories howsoever clouded they may seem. We have zeroed-in onto a timeframe where information can be stored within and distributed by light. We call it the photon age, the charge of the information-bearing 'light brigade', to be precise.

As Sherman and Schultz, again, observe, there's yet another dimension to it one that can be simulated by waves of gravity, thanks to Einstein, who bequeathed to us explicitly decipherable components vis--vis the dispersal of electromagnetic waves.

The only deviation is that they have not as yet been 'strapped and buckled', because such waves have ironically not been used.

They have only been considered in 'relative' terms by quantum physicists who, however, can't do without them in their own calculations.

This, as you'd deduce, calls for nothing short of a 'quantum' leap in seizing our future. Of a future which is in conformity with the nature of an emergent universe and the laws of the cosmos. The inference is simple: Einstein's mighty theory reduces uncertainty and ambiguity. More importantly, its whole genesis makes new observations possible.

Now, you know its import how the philosophy of ideas and the technological essence of science have constituted what we take pride in calling our epoch the Information Age.Its net result has been more than remarkable, also incredible a reduction in uncertainty.

Yet, a logical fact of life hangs in balance, despite our glorious appointment with history. There are simply no shortcuts, or huge leaps, in the mind-boggling world of science, howsoever great our technological advance. Call it science's own limiting dynamics, or what you may.

The Top 10 Mobile Games List of October 2021 – mxdwn.com

Posted: at 7:22 am

Emma McCandless October 31st, 2021 - 2:47 PM

The best part about October is all of the new spooky games that are released. If the aesthetic of these games had to be summed up in just three words it would have to be dark, elegant, and ominous. Every game this month associated with Halloween had a really great art style that is breath of fresh air from the cheerful puzzle games of summer. Of course, not every game is apart of the spooky scary trend. There are still some light hearted colorful games as well as some very tactical and analytical ones. There is something for everyone on this list, so be sure to read until the end to find the perfect game to fulfil your mobile gaming fix.

#10. Me Is King

This game is a great way to pass time quickly as it keeps the player very engaged during gameplay that is simple yet incredibly addicting. It is a fast paced civilization builder where players must decide how to use resources in order to build up their civilization. There is almost no strategy involved and is not competitive. #1. Horror Brawl: Battle Royal

As the name implies, this is a battle royal game for ten players. Everyone chooses a character out of the four high schoolers available to play as. Each character has its own pros and cons. Then, the players are placed at random throughout the map where they must find sufficient weapons to attack and defend against other players. Either hunt or be hunted, but the end goal is to find the Nazrat portal and escape to safety. There are so many more features to this game that make it a true hidden gem. Turn yourself into a scary monster by finding specific items or complete quests outside of battles to upgrade your competitiveness. This game is light hearted and enjoyable, yet can also be spooky and challenging. There have been some reports of glitching and lagging from players, so it is recommended to play this game in a place with a strong internet connection.

Horror Brawl: Battle Royalis available on iOS and Android systems for free.

‘In This House’ Yard Signs, and Their Curious Power – The New York Times

Posted: at 7:18 am

Political yard signs are no longer just election-season events. Conservative counties are rife with signs expressing support for Trump, though he holds no office and is not currently running for anything. And the In This House sign has spawned many flattering imitations and absurdist parodies. There are versions for neoliberals, YIMBYs, conservatives, conspiracists, fans of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and people irked by the triteness of the original sign. In 2017, Garveys poster was acquired for the archives of the National Womans Party an organization which had, a century earlier, led the most militant fringe of the American suffrage movement. Its a remarkable outcome for an artifact born from such a humble tradition: mom-related dcor.

If you have visited a beach town bric-a-brac shop, browsed a farmhouse-style Pinterest board or stayed in a generic Airbnb rental, the In This House sign format may be familiar. In This House, the sign begins, followed by a list of aphoristic family rules, such as We Do Hugs, We Do Mistakes, We Do Loud Really Well or We Do Family. Often the messages are overtly sanctimonious (We Do Prayer). Sometimes they end with a saucy twist (We Cheer for Clemson). Like other incantations in the momcore canon, the sign is often printed on a purposefully distressed plank in a scramble of fonts perhaps a gloopy typewriter style punctuated with bursts of spindly cursive. The whole dcor category (see also: Thou Shalt Not Try Me and Mama Needs Her Wine) features a mother character who serves as the fun if beleaguered keeper of her familys moral compass. Though In This House, We is phrased like a disciplinary guide for children, the signs feel directed at the adults in the room, reminding them of their own mission amid the chaos of parenting.

When this genre of sign was translated into a symbol of the #resistance, it left the living room and entered the public sphere. The target audience expanded from the family unit to passing neighbors and total strangers. Now the sign suggested a culture-wide lesson plan, even as its framing (in this house) remained individualistic. It was attuned to meet a particular cultural moment for liberal white women, who were experiencing not just a political crisis but a reputational one.

The typical member of Pantsuit Nation may have felt personally attacked by Trumps win, but she was also made to feel responsible for it. One of the most memorable signs of the 2017 Womens March read, Dont forget: White women voted for Trump, punctuated by an ominous scrawl of red marker. Initial exit polls suggested that Trump won more than 50 percent of white women voters, and that figure formed a powerful narrative that implicated the whole demographic. Though it was the overwhelming support of white men that swept Trump into office, it was the ambivalent position of white women that became an object of public fascination. The allegation was that liberal white women had failed, metaphorically speaking, to clean their own house. In 2018, the Pew Research Center released a more solid analysis of the 2016 electorate which determined that 47 percent of white women voted for Trump, edging out the 45 percent for Clinton. However you sliced it, white women were split roughly down the middle, suggesting a tense battle for the soul of the demographic.

4 Reasons Why Liberal Politicians Should Abandon Federal Takeover of Paid Family Leave – Heritage.org

Posted: at 7:18 am

Paid family leave is somethingalmost everyone wants, and its important for workers to be able to take time off when a family or medical need arises. The great news is that paid family leave is on the rise, with the percentage of workers with access to paid family leave shooting upby 64%over the past five years.

But just as access to flexible and accommodating policies is rising, Democrats big-government socialism bill would halt that trend and impose a one-size-fits-all policy instead.

The problem is that liberal politicians propose a family leave policy that is unworkable and likely would be inaccessible to workers who need it most.

Here are four reasons why this new, unfunded entitlement shouldnt make the cut in the big-government socialism wish list.

1. Treasury says it cant implement the program. Even with an extra $80 billion for an army of IRS enforcement agents, Treasury Department officials say they are not equipped to run a paid family leave program.

According to a topline memo fromTreasury officialsto staff of the House Ways and Means Committee, Treasury has no responsibility for large, permanent benefit entitlement programs.

Treasury does not have the functional expertise nor the internal expertise, officials said, and is not staffed to administer large entitlement programs offering permanent benefits.

The memo goes on to detail what would be required of the Treasury Department to manage the proposed program. Treasury would have to create and staff an entirely new office (or division) to administer the paid leave benefit program, including determining individuals eligibility for the leave benefits and awarding grants to eligible States and employers that maintain leave programs.

Treasury also would be responsible for taking applications from individuals seeking the paid leave benefit, establishing a call center, and creating an appeals process for individuals to challenge denied benefits, among other administrative functions, the memo says. These are not Treasury functions.

2. The program would provide the highest benefits to those with the highest incomes. For the birth of a child, this proposal would provide up to $5,540 to a single mom who makes $30,000 a year, and up to $28,000 for a married couple with $500,000 of income.

And unlike past proposals, no payroll tax would fund the benefits, so this is a purely regressive program. Theres zero rational for enacting new entitlement programs that disproportionately help high-income earners who already receive these benefits from their employers or their own incomes.

3. The program would use taxpayer dollars to take control of employers plans.Paid family leave policies that are flexible and accommodating were already on the rise prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, and theyve only increased further because of the need for such leave policies as well as the need for employers to respond to workers desires amid the record labor shortage.

But if you like your paid family leave program, youre unlikely to be able to keep it. Instead of just letting those policies be, the proposed paid family leave program would use taxpayer dollars to buy control over private employers plans. The federal government would cut large checks to corporations to cover up to 90% of their workers paid leave costs, but only if employers follow the programs rules and regulations.

That means putting the Treasury Department in ultimate control over why, when, and for whom workers may take leaveincluding Treasurys determining what constitutes an affinity relationship or the equivalent of a family relationship.

If employers denied requests for paid family leaveincluding instances when workers took leave without notifying employers and then applied for paid leave benefits a week latertheir employees could appeal those decisions to the Treasury Department. The employer could be liable for the cost of the appeal.

No wonder Treasury doesnt want to touch this program with a 10-foot pole. This is a whole lot of unnecessary costs and bureaucracy just for the federal government to gain control over paid family leave policies that already exist.

4. Low-income workers arent likely to benefit.Although in theory the program would expand access to paid family leave to almost all working Americans (and in some cases, even to those who arent working), the reality is that it would belargely inaccessibleto many low-income workers.

Across the globe, government paid leave programsconsistently failto provide meaningful benefits to low-income workers. Among women who took leave in California in 2016, for example, only 36% of those making less than $32,000 a year received paid leave benefits from the government, compared to 79% of those with annual earnings over $97,000.

And the proposal provides no job protection for the 45% of disproportionately low-income workers who dont qualify for job-protected family and medical leave.

As different factions of liberal lawmakers battle over what socialist policies to keep and which to abandon, spending $500 billion for a paid family leave program that barely would move the needle on low-income workers access to leave should be among the first to go.

Policymakers instead could expand access to paid family leave without spending a single dime more.

Congress could pass theWorking Families Flexibility Actso that lower-wage workers may choose to accumulate paid leave. Froma Harrop: The lefties, not liberals, are toxic to Democrats – Grand Forks Herald

Most every item on the Democrats' social wish list polls quite well.

Nevertheless, Democrats are deeply worried about the governor's race in Democratic-leaning Virginia and their ability to hold onto their bare majorities in the House and Senate. The reason is not honest disagreements over legislation. It's a small group on the left intent on slime-attacking Democratic moderates and scaring voters with their radical visions.

The bizarre part is that the lefties in the House number only about 17. Meanwhile, there are about 130 crazies in the Republican House caucus -- crazy defined by their January vote to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

Yet the right-wing media has succeeded in portraying the Democratic fringe as the party's leadership. This couldn't have been done without the help of the supposedly liberal media, always ready to quote, profile and invite on camera the most strident voices in the left. We're looking at you, MSNBC and The New York Times, whose journalists inhabit the same elite urban circles as the attention freaks.

The party's real political magicians get scant coverage. Abby Finkenauer managed to win a formerly Republican district in northeastern Iowa only to lose it in 2020 amid radical chatter about defunding police. Republicans were able to flip 15 hard-won Democratic seats, even as Democrat Joe Biden beat former President Donald Trump by 7 million popular votes.

Fox News and Newsmax will always find some obscure professor with a pointedly offensive critique of America to showcase as emblematic of Democratic thinking. Democrats can't control that. But they can impose penalties for their politicians who are too dense or don't care about messaging that scares the public.

Reps. Pramila Jayapal and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez represent districts so safe that Steve Bannon could win them if he had a "D" after his name. They do politically dumb things like attaching the term "people of color" to issues having nearly nothing to do with race, thereby confusing white voters who might want what they're proposing, like universal pre-K.

As for people of color, most aren't subscribing to the radical agenda, witnessed in the recent mayoral primary in New York City. Former police official Eric Adams won handily over the ultra-woke Maya Wiley, whom Ocasio-Cortez enthusiastically endorsed.

Guess what. Blacks and Latinos want public safety, especially at a time of rising crime. They also tend to be more socially conservative than white liberals, particularly members of the white liberal gentry.

That's a big reason, Democratic political analyst David Shor says, for Democrats having lost about 2% of support among African Americans. Hispanic support dropped by 8% to 9%.

Some of it was all that socialism talk by the radicals. Cubans, Colombians and Venezuelans don't care for socialism. But there was more.

"The (strikingly large) decline in Hispanic support for Democrats," Shor says, "was pretty broad. This isn't just about Cubans in south Florida. It happened in New York and California and Arizona and Texas."

Democrats can hope that Trump continues to favor candidates seriously accused of domestic violence. The estranged wife of Sean Parnell, one of Trump's endorsements, has two protection-from-abuse orders issued against him. Parnell is now running for the Senate in Pennsylvania.

Democratic voters really have to think strategically. That might include raising primary challenges to candidates more interested in their Twitter following than securing real power in Washington. The very democracy could depend on them.
