Analyzing the stimulated instability in Pak-Afghan region (Part 4) – Global Village space

Posted: October 3, 2021 at 2:53 am

From 1990 till Sept 2001, Pakistan was under US sanctions and was put on the watch list of countries abetting terrorism. After 9/11, Pakistan breathed a sigh of relief when it was taken off the hit list, and its sanctions were removed and debts rescheduled by the US, but it was at the cost of betraying the friendly Taliban regime and earning the ire of Islamists in the country and also cause of great instability in Pak-Afghan region.

The US in concert with India put all the stage-managed terror attacks and false flag operations in India and IOK in the basket of Pakistan so as to isolate it and declare it a terrorist state. All the anti-Pakistan narratives of India based on falsehood were readily accepted and supported while Pakistans explanations were out rightly rejected and were penalized. Series of dangerous plans were hatched and executed to denuclearize and unravel Pakistan or to make it a compliant state.

The US tilted the conventional military balance heavily in favor of India and Indias nuclear program bolstered to disturb the nuclear parity achieved by Pakistan. Indian friendship with Israel was encouraged and no eyebrows were raised when Israel became the largest supplier of sophisticated arms to India. On the other hand, Pakistans friendship with China and procurement of arms caused consternation to the US.

Indias partnership with Iran and development of Chahbahar port to undermine Gwadar port, and to provide alternative trade routes to landlocked Afghanistan dependent upon Pakistan, to access Iranian and Central Asian markets were encouraged. However, Gwadar and CPEC chagrined the US. RAW-NDS guided by the CIA made vigorous efforts to scuttle the CPEC with the help of proxies.

The Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project which could have helped Pakistan in overcoming its energy crisis and in improving bilateral relations was sabotaged by the US.

In the war imposed by the US for the attainment of its geo-strategic and geo-economic goals, the US earned nothing except for ignominy. Pakistan suffered 80,000 human losses, double the number of injuries, and a financial loss of $ 150 billion as against the $ 20 billion US assistance, the bulk of which was under the head of CSF. Pakistan also earned nothing out of this senseless war, which crippled its economy and caused immeasurable trauma to the nation. However, it draws satisfaction of being the only country that defeated terrorism on its soil and rumpled innumerable conspiracies.

While Pakistan bore the pains of terrorism courageously and didnt wail, but the unbearable pain was the deceit and black ingratitude of the thankless USA. The dual-faced USA bloodying the Af-Pak region kept bawling during the war and is still howling after the war.

Islamophobic India is continuing to play dirty tricks to create trouble for Pakistan. The sudden loss of prized Afghanistan has sent the BJP regime into a state of shock and mourning. In an effort to spoil Taliban- Pakistan relations, Indian media tried to undermine the formers splendid victory by giving credit to Pak Army. The fall of Panjshir was also attributed to the support of PAF and Pak commandos, but its loss dashed Indias last hope of stimulating terrorism from the north.

Although Indias main base of terrorism in Afghanistan has collapsed after the closure of its terror emitting 70 training camps and RAW offices, it is exploring new techniques and avenues to export terrorism into Pakistan. India is frantically trying to regain ground in Iran so as to use its soil for cross-border terrorism in Pakistan. It is also poisoning the ears of Iranian leadership against the Taliban, with whom Tehran had developed an understanding. Fed by India, Iran also accused Pakistan of its hand in the capture of Panjshir by the Taliban.

Like the duplicitous USA, which has suddenly got worried over the plight of the women and minorities in Afghanistan, hypocritical India also took the same path of hypocrisy. Hindutva loving and Muslim hating Modi in his last address to the UNGA said that the international community should help the women, children and minorities of Afghanistan. He indirectly blamed Pakistan for exploiting the fluid situation of the war-ravaged country to serve its selfish interests.

Who doesnt know that his fascist regime has unleashed a reign of terror against 200 million Muslims in India and is breaking all records of state terrorism and human rights in J&K and rape is used as a tool to break the will of Kashmiris. India has become notorious for rapes.

In its bid to pose a twin threat to Pakistan and to isolate it, India is itself faced with a twin threat from China and Pakistan and is getting isolated.

Indian media is continuing to spin fake news and stories to vilify Pakistan. After a series of exposures including the latest of notorious lies peddler Indian anchor Goswami, he became a butt of mockery when he insisted that ISI officers were staying on the 5th floor of Kabuls Serena Hotel when the hotel has only two floors. Indias ugly face is getting uncovered before the world and it is becoming increasingly difficult for Modi and his RSS team to befool the world. Modi was received by angry protesters in Washington chanting slogans against his Hindutva and compared him to Hitler.

Smarting under the pangs of humiliation and having no explanation to make as to why the US wasted $ 2.3 trillion in the known graveyard of empires, suffered a defeat and exited from Afghanistan in disgrace, the US civil and military leaders instead of introspection and learning lessons, are using the same old plot of putting the whole blame on Pakistan. Garbage to slander Pakistan is provided by India.

Instead of helping the struggling new regime in Kabul to overcome its teething problems, emphasis is on broad-based inclusive government, human and women rights. The Taliban are unjustly accused of not fulfilling the commitments.

What is the guarantee that the so-called inclusive government will succeed in achieving peace and stability, particularly when the detractors are bent upon destroying peace? Instead of putting frivolous demands and creating hurdles, why is the US reluctant to extend a helping hand? It is the biggest hindrance in the way of diplomatic recognition of the Taliban, which is now being painted as the biggest terrorist organization?

India and the US are jointly chalking out plans to throw the whole blame of the Taliban victory on Pakistan. Both have stepped up efforts to penalize Pakistan, prevent the Taliban from restoring peace, and create misgivings between the two neighbors.

After several inimical statements of the US senior officials, 22 Republican Senators moved a bill in the Senate Committee on Sept 28 to probe Pakistan States clandestine support to the Taliban between 2001 and 2020, allegedly providing sanctuaries, financial, intelligence, logistics, training & equipment to their fighters, and guiding them on tactical/operational/strategic techniques, which led to the collapse of the Kabul regime and fall of Panjshir Valley. Its a charge-sheet framed against Pakistan, aimed at imposing sanctions and preventing Pakistan from extending moral, diplomatic and socio-economic support to Afghanistan.

Ignoring the reality that the US had broken the pledges given in the Doha agreement (removing Taliban leaders from a blacklist, releasing Taliban 6000 prisoners, not attacking positions of the Taliban, and pulling out by May 1, 2021), the senators subscribed to the allegations of the US ground commanders that the Taliban didnt honor their commitments.

They overlooked the fact that there was no restriction imposed on the Taliban to desist from targeting ANA or to attack big cities before the cutout date. There was no clause in the Doha deal in which troop withdrawal was made conditional to a political settlement with the Afghan regime. The condition of intra-Afghan dialogue was fulfilled by the Taliban by starting talks in Sept 2020 irrespective of Ashraf Ghanis failure to release their prisoners. The senators baselessly accused the Taliban of not breaking ties with Al-Qaeda and being in collusion with Daesh-K, the two creations of the CIA.

The truth is that the Taliban didnt break a single commitment. Not only they refrained from attacking foreign troops between March 2020 and August 2021 but allowed them to exit safely. Hotheaded senators want to impose sanctions on the new regime just because they managed to floor the Goliath claiming to be invincible. They want the evolution of new strategies for the renewal of counterterrorism and have given six months time for implementation.

It is a clear indication that the US has not given up its imperialist and jingoistic policies and bullying tactics. These intimidating tactics are ploys to undermine the historic victory of the Taliban, to blame Pakistan that without its support victory was impossible, incapacitate Afghanistans economy, all in a bid to cover up the embarrassment of mortifying defeat.

Scapegoating Pakistan for the imperial hubris of an occupying force will not help in removing the stigma of defeat, or in restoring the lost glory. The fall of Kabul is being compared with the fall of Saigon. The scars of the rout will haunt the US for times to come.

The egoist USA is refusing to admit that without Pakistans support, it couldnt have occupied Afghanistan in 2001, couldnt have dragged the war for so long without logistic supply lines provided by Pakistan, and couldnt have pulled out safely without Pakistans cooperation.

Hypothetically, if the US irrational contention is accepted, how could Pakistans discreet support which itself was faced with an existential threat from the foreign paid proxies, faced with a highly discriminatory attitude of the US, engulfed in unstable economic and political conditions, and stung by swarms of snakes in the grass, could turn the dice in favor of the Taliban? After pushing out HN from North Waziristan to Khost in 2015, they were their baby to deal with. No proof of safe havens in Pakistan was furnished by the US since there were none.

This ludicrous story is akin to the lie cooked up by late Mujibur Rahman that the marooned Pakistani military force in former East Pakistan, cut off from the world and engulfed in fighting lakhs of Indian aided Bengali rebels and faced with the threat of military intervention by India, had massacred 3 million Bengalis and raped 300,000 Bengali women in the nine-month period.

Why doesnt the US accept the defeat gracefully and admit that it was owing to providential help which enabled the Taliban to achieve the miracle? It should be thankful to Allah for managing to extricate itself from the quagmire with its military and economic power intact.

Does by any chance the power-crazy USA wish to challenge the will of Allah Almighty and invite His wrath? Its war-mongering and roguish partners in crime Israel, India, and UK as well as Pentagon, are goading Biden to re-ignite the embers of terrorism and stimulate instability in the Af-Pak region with the help of proxy war, airpower and drones.

Like Al-Qaeda, Daesh-K under Mahajir which is an offshoot of ISIS has an international agenda. After creating havoc in Iraq and Syria, it is now planning to create anarchy in the Af-Pak region as well as in China in league with TTP, BLA, ETIM and IMU.

You can only appreciate art when you’re not worried about putting food on your plate: Abhay Deol – Times of India

Posted: at 2:52 am

From reimagining retro burlesque posters to painting Albert Einstein in water colour, farmers protest and more, Abhay Deols social media posts have given us enough reasons to appreciate his inclination towards art. We caught the actor during a hurried trip to Kolkata to be part of his friend, artist Harshit Agarwals solo exhibition, EXO-Stential - AI Musings On The Posthuman, at a city art gallery. The exhibition that started on September 11, came to an end with a talk, The Arts They Are A-Changing, in which Abhay was one of the speakers. After the talk, CT had a quick chat with the actor. ExcerptsYour recent photograph with artist friend Shilo Shiv Suleiman broke a lot of fans' hearts.(Laughs out loud) Please dont take me seriously is what I would say.We noticed you were asked for autographs. Do you get autograph requests frequently in the time of selfies? Not that much. Mostly, it's selfies. You are right. It happens. Not that it doesn't. But not as often. I mean, I prefer autographs for sure. You dont always want to be photographed. But I generally tend to say yes rather than say no (laughs).

We see a lot of your paintings on your social media.

(Laughs) It is a hobby and I paint every now and then. Not as often as I would like to. I put it on my Instagram. I am not a professional though.

How conducive do you find our country to practice and perform arts of any form?

Honestly speaking, art is a luxury. Of course, there is a reason why richer nations tend to have a lot more invested in art than pooper nations. You can only appreciate the beauty when you are not worried about putting food on your plate. Thats the truth. But yes, we have the middle class who are doing well. There are people who are doing well. It's not like we dont have business that runs successfully, not like there isnt infrastructure. We have had a lot more success in the past couple of decades than before. That has led to people having money to spend. So, you do see a lot of art and appreciation for it today than before I think. How are you planning your festive season?

We are, as a family, not so ritualistic. From a very early age I've noticed that on Diwali days, we burst a lot of crackers that end up irritating in my throat and spreading a lot of smoke in the atmosphere. On Holi, a lot of colours have chemical ingredients harmful for the body. So, I have always questioned since my childhood that if it's not good for the environment, is it really good for god? I am very objective with festivals. In Indian culture, gods and goddesses represent the elements. It is one rare culture that worships nature. I think that is a beautiful part. We worship elements and our gods and goddesses represent those elements. I hope to see festivals that celebrate a clean environment and community.

TotalEnergies enters US offshore wind race, energy transition smart thinking, and go big or go home! | Recharge – Recharge

Posted: at 2:51 am

Another giant from Europe this week joined the dash to US wind at sea, as it becomes ever clearer that Americas coming offshore energy revolution will be dominated by power and fossil players from across the Atlantic.

French supermajor TotalEnergies unveiled plans for stateside alliances with EnBW and Simply Blue Energy as it joined fellow oil & gas players BP, Shell and Equinor, and power groups Orsted, EDPR, Engie, EDF and Iberdrola in a European carve up of the seabed opportunities off the US.

TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyann said the partnerships, and others the group has struck in offshore wind, are crucial to a company that is a latecomer to a sector that presents risks even to the largest players.

The supermajor will enter a US market that gathers pace by the week, with the Shell-EDF Atlantic Shores 1.5GW project now under review off New Jersey, and Vineyard Wind sweetening its bid for its recently unveiled Commonwealth Wind plan with an offer to redevelop Salem Harbor into the US state of Massachusetts second offshore wind port.

OEM Siemens Gamesa added to its growing order haul in the US with an 800MW-plus confirmation of deals with the Orsted-Eversource alliance that could prove the trigger for a first American turbine manufacturing facility.

The energy transition is going nowhere without the type of technical innovation that featured in a spate of articles from Recharge this week, with floating wind as so often heavily represented.

Article continues below the advert

With floating turbine platforms already hitting the water, attention is turning to the floating substations that will be needed to gather and export the power from future megaprojects, as evidenced by a new heavyweight tie-up between Linxon and its parent companies Hitachi ABB Power Grids and SNC-Lavalin/Atkins fleshing out designs to help wind make the leap into floating.

Floating is also the target of a world first deployment by Equinor of a sea drone at its pioneering Hywind Scotland project to check how fish and biomass are thriving at an operational floating wind farm an issue that will become increasingly vital as giant new projects spring up around the world.

Back on dry land, researchers at the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) are looking at options to transport 100-metre-plus turbines blades by rail, potentially a game-changer for logistics but one that will require controlled flexing of the blades themselves.

And in another exclusive insight into the technologies that could transform the energy transition, Recharge talked to a start-up that claims it has developed an emissions-free process that will make hydrogen from natural gas at such a low price it could give away the H2 for free.

If innovation is helping renewables think smarter, there is also plenty of thinking bigger going on as the energy transition contemplates scaling up at a rate that can only be described as epic.

This week alone we reported on plans to connect 10GW of Moroccan wind and solar to the UK via a 3,000km-plus cable, a green hydrogen mega-project in Mauritania that could spur Africas first offshore wind farm, and the scoping in by Orsted of gargantuan 27MW turbines way beyond anything near the market so far in a future-proofing exercise for a Swedish offshore project.

However, this weeks prize for big numbers goes to consultancy DNV, whose CEO Ditlev Engel spoke exclusively to Recharge about the $60 trillion of finance redirection to the energy transition thats needed by 2050.

PREVIOUS, FRIDAY UPDATE, writethru:Full numbers for Wednesday and Thursday show MGM/Eon/Universals James Bond pic No Time To Die at a cumulative $22M through two days of early release at the international box office. That includes $20M from just yesterday in such markets as the UK, Brazil, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands. The figures put 007 on track to top pre-weekend projections of $90M through Sunday.

As a reminder, in like-for-like markets at todays exchange rates, 2015s Spectre did $123.5M; 2012s Skyfall came in at $109.2M; and, more recently, Universals latest Fast & Furious franchise entry F9 did $69.5M.

No Time To Die will overtake the latter, and if it gets close to either of the last two Bond pics, it will be a validation for the film, its partners and the theatrical business. Many believe that after all the stops and starts, if any movie can get people back into cinemas in the pandemic era, the latest in this decades-old franchise is the one. NTTD is still carrying an 83% Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes. It releases domestically on October 8.

In Bonds home market, the UK, No Time To Die grossed a confirmed $6.6M on Thursday, accounting for 94% of all box office there. This is the third-highest opening day of the Bond franchise, 14% above Spectre (Monday opening), and just 30% behind Skyfall (Friday opening). The Cary Joji Fukunaga-directed installment now holds UK records for thehighest single day gross in September, thehighest single day of the pandemic, and the highest single day since Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker opened during the holiday period of December 2019.

As noted in yesterdays update below, the Daniel Craig-starrer launched with the widest theatrical release of all time in the UK and Ireland. Its playing in 772 cinemas across 3,600 screens, and will have 9,000 daily shows over the weekend. Following the London world premiere on Tuesday, the film has continued generating big news in the UK. Bond is pretty much everywhere there, from busses to billboards and boutiques (ie, Orlebar Brown is touting a line of square-cut 007 swim shorts). Passing through Heathrow airport this afternoon, I spied a report on one of the major news channels about the secret life of secret agents which, natch, included footage from No Time To Die.

Early results fromJapan, which bowed today, indicate a Friday opening day of $1.7M, the biggest Friday opening day of the Bond franchise, and second-biggest MPA opening day of the pandemic. All major exhibitors are now operating at full capacity with no restrictions on show times.

Looking back at the other early openers from Wednesday and Thursday, Germanys opening gross was $2.8Mon Thursday from over 1,300 screens, and good for 84% of the total market and more than 10x second-placedDune (which is in its third frame). This is the biggest opening day of the pandemic, more than doublingFast 9, and the second-biggest September opening day ever behind local productionFack Ju Goehte 2.

Korea tood a total $1.3Macross Wednesday and Thursday, opening with afternoon shows on Wednesday and setting the biggest Culture Day opening for a Hollywood film in 2021 (the last Wednesday of the month).

Denmarkgrossed $1M on opening day, more than 85% of the markets total box office; Sweden took $990K.

TheMiddle EastopenedNTTDon 985 screens across the region, this is the biggest release there this year. The cume for the region through Thursday is$1.7M.

Netherlands grossed$681Kon Thursday, taking 75% of the market and taking more than 10x second-placedDune(third weekend). This is the fifth biggest Thursday opening of all time, thebiggest ever for Universal, thetop for a September release, and thebiggest of the pandemic. The opening day is just 7% belowSpectre, and 48% aboveSkyfall. This result is despite mandatory health passes and capacity restrictions.

Elsewhere, Switzerlandmade$615K on Thursday (thebiggest opening day of the pandemic, and thebiggest September opening day of all time).

Mexicoopened to $588Kacross Wednesday and Thursday, 37% aboveSkyfalls opening Thursday. Italybowed with$573Kdespite strong Covid restrictions in the market and setting thebiggest opening Thursday of the pandemic, and sixth-biggest of the last 10 years of Thursday openings. There is reportedly exceptional performance in Matera where some scenes from the movie were shot.

Hong Kongscored$544Kon Thursday, capturing 77% of the market. This is thebiggest opening day of the entire Bond franchise, thebiggest September opening day of all time, and the biggest non-holiday opening day since the beginning of the pandemic.

Austria had a strong opening day with 79% market share across 326 screens, the widest release in digital times. The film delivered $397K on Thursday, the biggest MPA September opening day of all time (second biggest behind local title Fack Ju Goehte 2), and the third biggest opening day since January 2019. The total market increased 192% on Thursday vs last week.

India opened to $381K, the widest release since the second wave of the pandemic. The market remains impaired, but No Time To Die achieved the third-biggest September opening day of all-time.

Belgium opened to $325K on Thursday, the best September launch day of all time, and the biggest opening day of 2021. Thursdays result was 29% above Fast 9, and just 31% below Spectre which released during holidays.

Brazil kicked off with $207K on Thursday, 22% below Spectre, and accounting for 73% of the total market.

No Time to Die still has an additional 15 international markets to go, including France (Oct 6), Russia (Oct 7), China (Oct 29) and Australia (Nov 11).

Well continue updating No Time To Dies overseas rollout over the coming days.

PREVIOUSLY, THURSDAY: MGM/Eon/Universals highly-anticipated No Time To Die has clocked an estimated $6.2M-$6.8M (4.5M-5M) in the UK on its opening day today. Daniel Craigs final turn as legendary secret agent 007 came in about 13% above Spectre (Monday opening) and just 26% below Skyfall (Friday opening). The Cary Joji Fukunaga-directed pic is enjoying the widest theatrical release of all time in the market with 772 cinemas playing the film amid buzz and excitement aplenty.

More than 30,000 people attended midnight screenings in the UK and Ireland on Wednesday night. No Time To Die sold a spectacular 1.62M advance tickets for the opening four days, surpassing Spectres total advance bookings by over 12% and performing in line with Skyfall at the same time pre-release.

The 25th James Bond movie began international box office rollout on Wednesday in Korea, and added the UK today along with majors Germany, Brazil and Italy we will have updated figures from those markets tomorrow, when Japan, Mexico and Spain also officially start their engines. In total, over 50 offshore markets are going this frame; domestic and further overseas hubs open next weekend and China is dated October 29.

After several pandemic-induced release date changes, audiences are saying, Mr Bond, weve been expecting you. The UK in particular has been all aflutter with excitement. A lavish, jam-packed and royally-attended world premiere was held at Londons Royal Albert Hall on Tuesday night while Vue held an invite-only screening at its Leicester Square venue on Wednesday evening. The film set the record for highest advance sales of all time for the Everyman, Picturehouse and Curzon circuits.

The UK naturally is Bonds strongest performer and set a series of records on Spectre, which had a seven-day opening including previews; the No Time To Die rollout is different in that it began on a Thursday.

Elsewhere, Korea launched with afternoon shows on Wednesday, grossing a strong $665K from 2,167 screens, by far the widest release of the franchise. Thursday added another $590K for a total of $1.35M so far, and more than 60% of the market.

Mexicos first preview day came in at No. 1 with $300K from 2,625 screens. No Time To Die achieved 64% market share, grossing almost 7x the second-placed film. Attendance was strong across the country.

While industry projections factored a roughly $90M opening frame for No Time To Die, some think the Aston Martin could speed past that number. As a reminder, in like-for-like markets at todays exchange rates, 2015s Spectre did $123.5M; 2012s Skyfall came in at $109.2M; and, more recently, Universals latest Fast & Furious franchise entry F9 did $69.5M.

No Time To Die will overtake the latter, and if it gets close to either of the last two Bond pics, it will be a huge validation for the film, its partners and the theatrical business.

Many have indicated to us that if any movie can get folks back into cinemas in the pandemic era and recall that Bond skews slightly older, a demo that has been somewhat reticent to return the latest in this enduring franchise is the one. Reviews have been great with an 83% Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes. And even some of those who have complaints agree with the consensus that this is a very fitting and emotional farewell to Craig in his fifth go-round.

We will be back throughout the weekend with updates on No Time To Dies overseas rollout.

Salem slated to become second major port city in Mass. for offshore wind industry – BetaBoston

Posted: at 2:51 am

Crowley Maritime Corp., a transport ship operator based in Florida, said it plans to buy 42 waterfront acres from Footprint Power, which replaced the old coal plant with a gas-fired one and no longer needs as much room. Crowley would own and operate the terminal, and lease the space to the Vineyard Wind groups two investors, Avangrid Renewables and then Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, for up to 10 years.

Jeff Andreini, a vice president at Crowley, said he hopes his company can close on the land acquisition next year. Crowley does not manufacture turbine components, but Andreini said the company would eventually try to lease part of the site to a manufacturer to augment the construction and assembling work that would happen there.

Vineyard Wind chief executive Lars Pedersen said the entire deal hinges on Vineyard Wind succeeding with its Commonwealth Wind proposal in the states latest round of bidding for offshore wind contracts. Vineyard Wind already has plans for an 800-megawatt wind farm project south of the Vineyard, called Vineyard Wind 1, that would be served primarily by the port in New Bedford, to be financed with contracts won in an earlier round.

Vineyard Wind would need to win the rights to deliver at least another 800 megawatts of power, enough for more than 400,000 homes, for the investment in Salem to take place, Pedersen said.

Electric utilities National Grid and Eversource, working with the administration, will make that decision this fall. Its possible that 800-megawatt contracts could be awarded to both Vineyard Wind and its rival bidder, the Mayflower Wind consortium.

Salem Mayor Kim Driscoll said this deal is a huge step forward in replacing some of the tax revenue and job losses that have occurred since the old power plant shut down in 2014, and was replaced by the more efficient natural gas plant in 2018. Vineyard Winds work at the site would support, on average, at least 100 jobs a year over a five-year period once the terminal is operational, with several hundred more supported during the redevelopment itself. Those would be good-paying blue-collar jobs, Driscoll said, that could benefit the entire region.

Its really an opportunity for us to turn toward the sea ... to bring jobs and revenue to our communities, Driscoll said. Its an immense opportunity at a time when we need clean, affordable power to meet our climate-change goals.

Salem is much further from the federal offshore lease areas south of the Vineyard and Nantucket than New Bedford, but it also offers more space than the state-funded $113 million terminal in New Bedford, and more room to maneuver. There is a tight squeeze to enter and exit New Bedfords harbor because of a hurricane barrier.

We think this can work extremely well, Pedersen said of Salem. These vessels will have some extra streaming time, but nothing that will not make the projects viable.

Salems North Shore location does make it well-positioned if the Gulf of Maine is opened up to wind farm construction. That area has been slower to develop because it has deeper waters and would likely require floating turbines, instead of the traditional foundation-supported turbines that will go up south of the islands.

For Bob Blair, an independent ship pilot who used to help transport coal barges in the harbor, Vineyard Winds announcement represents a major victory. Blair helped rally the opposition to a previous proposal by Footprint Power to convert part of the site for residential use; such a conversion would need either approval by the state Legislature or state environmental regulators because the land sits in a designated port area that precludes housing construction.

Salem, which has the oldest commercial seaport in America, has a rich history, Blair said. Id be damned if I would let that go down on my watch. ... We saved a seaport and now the seaport will live on for another century.

Officials in the Baker administration and in its quasi-public arm, the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center, have determined that Salem Harbor could be a viable location for an offshore wind port. Toward that end, Governor Charlie Baker is asking the state Legislature for $100 million in federal stimulus funds to buttress the port infrastructure in Salem as well as New Bedford and in the nearby South Coast town of Somerset, which was also once home to two coal plants, both now closed.

Offshore wind advocates say there will be more than enough demand to support at least two wind terminals in Massachusetts, if not more, if New England is to successfully be weaned off of fossil-fuel burning power plants by 2050. Offshore wind terminals also are being proposed in Providence, in Bridgeport and New London, Conn., and in Searsport, Maine.

Its pretty clear were going to need a constellation of ports, not just in Massachusetts but across the region, said Susannah Hatch, the clean energy coalition director at the Environmental League of Massachusetts.

The arrival of offshore wind has been a long time coming for the members of the Salem Alliance for the Environment. The group argued about a decade ago that the power plant site should be used to help the offshore wind industry, but state officials at the time chose to focus instead on New Bedford.

SAFE cochair Patricia Gozemba said she was disappointed by that turn of events. But she is elated now.

There were mountains of coal piled up for years, with coal dust blowing through our neighborhoods, Gozemba said. There is some ironic justice in having the offshore wind industry become the force that will revitalize that area.

Posted: at 2:51 am

On September 9, 2021, the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) presented the Offshore Tax Evasion Case Study training course to the Grenada Inland Revenue Division and Financial Intelligence Unit. The course incorporated multiple areas of transnational financial crimes specific to offshore banking schemes, tax evasion, and Klein conspiracy, while specifically focusing on an offshore tax evasion investigation involving a complex yet classic pyramid scheme. The course also highlighted how international efforts, such as the Offshore Voluntary Disclosure Initiative (OVDI) and the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA), aid in combating tax evasion and serve to dismantle and disrupt a criminal conspiracy built upon greed. The training session generated intense discussions about conducting investigations to secure the Grenada tax system and financial system.

At the opening of the event, Randy Boyke, Deputy Comptroller, Ministry of Finance Inland Revenue Division of Grenada and Leticia James, Deputy Constable, Financial Intelligence Unit Grenada welcomed training participants. Principal Officer U.S. Embassy Grenada, Karl Duckworth addressed the financial professionals, As international criminals develop more sophisticated techniques, everyone benefits from sharing information on how to detect, investigate, and ultimately bring to justice lawbreakers. Duckworth continued, As Grenada continues to grapple with the real challenges presented by COVID, it is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the revenue collection and financial professionals from the United States and Grenada that they were able to hold this important training safely online. We all look forward and pray for the day when it is safe to conduct international exchanges like this in person. Meanwhile, the United States will continue to be a friend to Grenada in these trying times.

Falck Renewables has partnered with BlueFloat Energy to develop floating offshore wind farms off the Italian coast, with the joint ventures first 1200MW project Kailia Energia off Puglia, Italy.

The equal partnership will look to contribute to the continued growth of renewable energy in Italy as the country works towards the achievement of its 2030 national decarbonization targets.

The development of the Kailia Energia project is estimated to create up to 4000 jobs within the local area.

The project developers will file the necessary documentation with the Ministry for Ecological Transition to start the authorization process for the Kailia Energia floating offshore wind farm, the joint venture have said.

A request for a maritime concession will also be submitted to the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Port Authority of the Southern Adriatic Sea.

The developers said they have embarked on a series of local stakeholder meetings to build a process of consultation and dialogue on the project proposals, that will continue throughout the entire process of project development.

Falck renewables and BlueFloat Energy have also said that preliminary analysis is underway for a second floating offshore project to be located in the same area.

Falck Renewables chief executive officer Toni Volpe said: "Today we are bringing the floating offshore wind technology to Italy, demonstrating our commitment to achieving sustainable goals through the implementation of innovative technologies.

This project is the result of an important work carried out in recent months by the partnership, and that has also involved local stakeholders in a process of dialogue and shared development with communities and territories."

BlueFloat Energy chief executive officer Carlos Martin said: As a global offshore wind developer with a unique floating wind expertise we are keen to contribute towards a development of this sector in Italy.

Our recent experience of developing a floating wind project in Spain with Parc Tramuntana provides us with valuable insights into the unique challenges of developing this type of projects in the Mediterranean region.
