BLUFFDALE, Utah, Oct. 1, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Med 7, LLC (www.Med 7cbd.com) and HempCo, Inc. announce the completion of a human clinical study to assess the effects of Med 7 on sleep. Med 7 is a full spectrum hemp product made with Purzorb technology, now trademarked as Hempzorb81. "Over 30 million Americans suffer from sleep issues affecting work productivity and quality of life" said Matt Smith, CEO of Med 7. "In our first Hempzorb81 safety and efficacy study, 91% of the patients on Med 7 reported better sleep and more active dreaming. We wanted to do a deep dive and see the effects of Hempzorb81 on sleep cycles and other health measurements." This study was done with support of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as part of their small business grant program.

In this placebo-controlled study, Hempzorb81 demonstrated an increase in deep sleep by over 54 minutes.

In this placebo-controlled study on 150 patients, Hempzorb81 demonstrated a significant effect on increasing deep sleep by over 54 minutes versus placebo. Patients on Hempzorb81 also had a decrease of more than 18 minutes of awake time over placebo. Patients were studied using the FitBitCharge 3 in this 3 month long study. Hempzorb81 also had a positive effect on other health and wellness measurements (www.hempzorb81.org).

Patients in this Hempzorb81 study did not report sedation or any serious side-effects. "Having a fast-acting, non-sedating, and safe product to support better sleep will have an enormous effect on the health and wellbeing of many lives, " said Derrick DeSilva, Jr. MD, director of the Med 7 Medical Advisory Board. "This study reinforces what I have seen for many years with patients in my practice." Cannabidiol (CBD) alone or in combination with other cannabinoids has had mixed results in sleep studies and has never been studied in a large placebo-controlled study. "One in every four Americans develop sleep issues every year. This study should give consumers and healthcare providers confidence that there is a hemp product containing CBD that is now backed by human clinical studies."

Mike Brown touts Amanda Nunes continued evolution ahead of UFC 269: I think people will be surprised – MMA Fighting

Posted: at 2:17 am

Amanda Nunes is widely considered one of the greatest fighters to ever compete in the sport of MMA. According to her head coach Mike Brown, shes actually getting event better.

The two-division champion will defend her bantamweight title against Julianna Pena in the co-main event of UFC 268 on Dec. 11.

The fight was originally scheduled to take place at UFC 265 in August but was postponed after Nunes tested positive for COVID-19. Now that shes back at American Top Team getting ready for another fight, Brown has noticed a more evolved version of the No. 1 ranked pound-for-pound womens fighter in MMA Fightings global rankings, which is a scary thing to think about.

Shes just getting better all the time, Brown told MMA Fighting during a visit to American Top Team. Its amazing. Shes the No. 1 fighter in the world and still improving all the time. Its pretty crazy how much shes still evolving and I think people will be surprised when they see her next fight, I think. For whatever reason, I dont know whats clicked with her, but in the last year, two years, shes accelerated.

Shes trying new things, managing thingsmaybe her trainingbetter. I dont know exactly what it is, but shes improving for now then [she has] in the past.

Theres just more techniques added to her arsenal. Shes more composed, more relaxed, better vision, better octagon awareness, the whole thing all combined. Theres a lot of pieces to it and I feel like shes really accelerated.

Nunes has been victorious in 12 straight, which includes winning and defendingmultiple timesthe bantamweight and featherweight titles. The Lioness will put her 135-pound title on the line for the first time in nearly two years against Pena. In her most recent defense of the bantamweight title, she defeated Germaine De Randamie via unanimous decision at UFC 245. She went on to defend her 145-pound title in her next two appearances, earning a dominant decision against Felicia Spencer at UFC 250, and a first-round submission win over Megan Anderson in March at UFC 259.

For Brown, seeing a fighter with such accolades, such a strong resume still not find her ceiling admittedly leaves him scratching his head.

Its impressive and it makes you wonder, Brown said. Thats what happens, sometimes. Maybe its confidence. With confidence, you grow. Your mentality changes, you do more, you can be more open-minded to a lot of different techniques, and maybe it just kind of snowballs from there. Thats my best guest.

Anxiety Issues in Pets: Does Your Dog/ Cat Feel Anxious? How to Find Out And What to do? – India.com

Anxiety Issues in Pets: Humans suffer from anxiety, so do pets! Anxiety affects a dogs mental and physical health & well-being and may lead to severe repercussions in their lifestyle. Stress, fear, or trauma in pets are the possible culprits. Anxiety in pets can result in a whole lot of reactions such as excessive barking, whining, restlessness, lack of appetite, and aggressive behavior in pets. The possible triggers could be a car trip, a new family member or a pet, change in residence or environment, separation anxiety from the pet parent, transition to a crate, thunderstorms, fireworks, trip to the park, crowded places, loud noises, or even a visit to a vet or groomer in certain cases. If these triggers are not taken care of through socialization or through medications, they may result in fear, anxiety, and possible aggression in pets. CBD Oil has been known to be a natural relaxant in pets and helps them to calm down all these triggers. Also Read - Delhi AIIMS Develops 2 Mobile Apps For Patients Dealing With Anxiety, Depression

Socialising pets at an early stage may help to tackle most of these situations along with training sessions that help to correct behavior with positive reinforcements. This helps to build trust between the owner and the pet and helps to reassure the pets that they are in safe and secure hands. Their mental well-being and anxiety can be taken care of with the help of CBD treats and supplements. Also Read - Regular Exercise May Lower the Risk of Developing of Anxiety by 60% Says Study

CBD or cannabidiol is a natural and non-intoxicating compound found in cannabis or hemp. It is made from extracting CBD from the cannabis plant and diluting it with a carrier oil like hemp seed oil or coconut oil. CBD is one of cannabiss non-psychoactive compounds and there has been clinical evidence that shows that it produces calming effects on pets suffering from anxiety, seizures, or chronic pain when used as pet medication as per the dosage prescribed by vets. CBD Oil-based products are used as dog medicine in cases of skin infection in dogs and are also used as painkillers for dogs to relieve itching and skin rashes when used topically. It has anti-inflammatory properties, soothes skin rashes, reduces arthritic pain, lubricates joints, and maintains healthy skin in dogs and cats when used as a topical measure.

CBD or Cannabidiol interacts with the endocannabinoid receptors located in the central and the peripheral nervous systems in pets which help to maintain the balance in the body and keep it in a normal and healthy state. In other words, CBD oil or supplements help to manage anxiety in pets by changing the brains receptor response to serotonin the key hormone that stabilizes the mood and enables the brain cells and other nervous system cells to respond to each other and regulate behavior, awareness of pain, heart & lungs, mobility, appetite, body temperature, anxiety, etc.

It is important to note that CBD oil does not contain THC, the compound that gives a high as most products are derived from hemp and not marijuana.

The right dose of CBD oil to treat anxiety is very important and its always better to consult a vet. Choose a broad spectrum CBD oil as it contains 100% natural plant compounds. Oils may vary as per their potency and effectiveness. Choose a product in a spray form as it can easily be added to their food or dipped in treats or even applied or sprayed on the skin to counter skin rashes or allergies which trigger anxiety spells in pets. The dosage will depend on the pets ailment, breed, and size as per the vets suggestion and the effect is mostly seen within an hour. It is advisable to administer dosage to your pet only upon a thorough understanding of the pets history and health condition by a qualified veterinarian.

Pets will appear calmer, relaxed, and less anxious once their dosage is set. A happy pet will in turn make their human calmer and stress-free to lead a healthy and long life. Introduce your pet to the wonders of CBD oil and watch your pet thrive in their environment.

Nicole Kidman, 54, Shares the CBD-Infused Face Oil She Swears by to Combat ‘Redness and Inflammation’ – Yahoo Lifestyle

"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through the links below."

Its no surprise that Nicole Kidman is serious about her skincare. Shes constantly attending red carpet events, starring in tv shows (run don't walk to see Nine Perfect Strangers), and gracing the covers of various magazines. The star has proven time and time again that she's not only a master of her craft, but that she's also great at maintaining flawless-looking skin.

In a recent video for Harpers Bazaar, Kidman shared her must-have beauty products and steps for her nighttime skincare routineand it's incredibly simple. I think Im just very much about less is more now as I get older and also after having kids I cant be bothered, Kidman said.

So if youve been skipping out on your skincare routine because you dont have enough time, follow Kidmans quick and simple method for ageless-looking skin, just like hers.

I take off my makeup using this cleanser which smells amazing, said Kidman, who is a a SeraLabs ambassador and business partner. Its the SeraLabs Clarity Foaming Cleanser, packed with good-for-you skincare ingredients like jojoba seed oil which helps to hydrate the skin, fruit extracts that dissolve dead skin cell build-up, and a unique patented P3P complex that increases absorption in your skin. The formula is also designed to maintain the skins delicate moisture balance while breaking up dirt, oil, and other impurities.

To apply, Kidman pumps a generous amount of product into her hand and then rubs it across her face, gently massaging it into her forehead, cheeks, and nose. She then rinses it all off and uses a dry cloth to clean up excess water.

Story continues

Next, she follows up with a CBD-infused facial oil by SeraLabs, which she says helps with redness and inflammation. Kidman pours a tiny amount of oil into her palms and then smoothes it all over her face, including her ears. I like to have moist skin, she said as she massaged the product onto her cheeks.

The facial oil with CBD has a 4.8-star rating and great customer reviews. This product helps the area of my skin that was damaged by shingles in the past which was just an added bonus to the results of this product, wrote one satisfied user. I highly recommend it for regular use and people that have had shingles on their face and had to deal with residual nerve pain and itching in that area.

Formulated with marula oil, argan oil, and vitamin E, this oil helps to improve the appearance of the skin by reducing fine lines and wrinkles while creating a radiant, youthful glow.

Marula oil is great at reducing redness and hydrating dry and irritated skin, says Debra Jaliman, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist in New York City and the author of Skin Rules. Its rich in omega fatty acids, but its noncomedogenic and absorbs quickly, meaning it has a low risk of clogging your pores. The texture of the oil is also silky, lightweight, and absorbs quickly.

To keep her curly strands healthy and tangle-free, Kidman applies her favorite hair oil, the Philip B Rejuvenating Oil (an intensive hair and scalp treatment that moisturizes dry hair). She then gathers all of her hair to the back of her head, creating one large braid, and secures the bottom with a hair tie.

Made with nourishing oils like sesame seed and almond, this hair treatment helps to repair existing damage by strengthening the follicles. Plus, it says it helps prevent future breakage.

Sometimes I put on this beautiful heel souffle which is also by SeraLabs because my feet get really dry, Kidman said. This whipped moisturizer melts into dehydrated skin and works to improve the texture and feel of dry, bumpy, rough-feeling heels.

Its ingredients include shea butter, coconut oil, marula oil, and CBD extract. The brand says that the topical application of CBD body lotion and other topical CBD products can soothe areas such as joints that are affected by occasional discomforts. Who wouldn't want some relief, especially after a long day on their feet (or after a premier).

NZX-listed Rua Bioscience has won certification from Medsafe to start making its first medicinal cannabis product - a cannabinoid (CBD) oil.

Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) certification is the global standard for all pharmaceuticals and certifies that Rua can make a product that is consistently safe and of acceptable quality.

Certification is a pre-requisite for both domestic and export sales.

Chief executive Rob Mitchell said it was a significant milestone for Tairwhiti-based Rua.

"GMP certification means we've moved a long way down the path to being allowed to manufacture products," he said in a statement.

The next stage is to submit a new medicinal cannabis product application to the Medicinal Cannabis Agency.

Once that process is complete, Mitchell anticipates being able to supply product for the domestic market by early 2022.

Manufacturing will take place Rua's purpose-built facility in Gisborne and the compounded CBD oil will be available in New Zealand as a prescription-only medicine.

Rua's certification comes after a series of delays.

CBD oils are commonly prescribed in New Zealand for pain, epilepsy and anxiety.

Germany is the largest single market for pharmaceutical) grade cannabis globally.

Clinicians there can prescribe medicinal cannabis for a variety of conditions, many of which are covered by the statutory health insurers.

Shares in Rua Bioscience debuted on the NZX one year ago at 70c cents, a 20 cent, or 40 per cent premium to its 50 cent issue price.

The stock last traded at 41.5c, up 2.5c or 6.4 per cent.

Midwest Pharmaceutics NZ Limited, NZX-listed Cannasouth's wholly owned subsidiary, has GMP Certification for packing and wholesale supply of medicines.

Cannasouth said it is progressing with its GMP certification for own-manufactured cannabis-based products and would update the market with this timeline "in due course".

The company is also in the process of having three imported own-brand GMP medicinal cannabis products assessed by the Medicinal Cannabis Agency for distribution.

Unlisted medicinal cannabis company, Helius Therapeutics, was issued with the industry's first GMP certificate by MedSafe in July.

Encoding hierarchical assembly pathways of proteins with DNA – pnas.org

Posted: at 2:16 am

Significance

Structural sophistication in nature would not be possible without hierarchical assembly: the concept that an initial building block (e.g., polypeptide) contains all necessary structural and chemical information to determine its assembly along a multistep pathway to generate a complex architecture (e.g., viral capsid). Translating this concept to synthetic systems is an outstanding challenge. Here, we use DNAthe blueprint of lifeto direct the hierarchical assembly of proteins. Through DNA design, we can change the directionality of protein assembly and pathway by which proteinDNA conjugates will assemble as well as realize distinct structures by directing assembly along different pathways. These findings will facilitate the assembly of proteinDNA materials with structural complexity more closely approaching that observed in nature.

The structural and functional diversity of materials in nature depends on the controlled assembly of discrete building blocks into complex architectures via specific, multistep, hierarchical assembly pathways. Achieving similar complexity in synthetic materials through hierarchical assembly is challenging due to difficulties with defining multiple recognition areas on synthetic building blocks and controlling the sequence through which those recognition sites direct assembly. Here, we show that we can exploit the chemical anisotropy of proteins and the programmability of DNA ligands to deliberately control the hierarchical assembly of proteinDNA materials. Through DNA sequence design, we introduce orthogonal DNA interactions with disparate interaction strengths (strong and weak) onto specific geometric regions of a model protein, stable protein 1 (Sp1). We show that the spatial encoding of DNA ligands leads to highly directional assembly via strong interactions and that, by design, the first stage of assembly increases the multivalency of weak DNADNA interactions that give rise to an emergent second stage of assembly. Furthermore, we demonstrate that judicious DNA design not only directs assembly along a given pathway but can also direct distinct structural outcomes from a single pathway. This combination of protein surface and DNA sequence design allows us to encode the structural and chemical information necessary into building blocks to program their multistep hierarchical assembly. Our findings represent a strategy for controlling the hierarchical assembly of proteins to realize a diverse set of proteinDNA materials by design.

In Just 10 Years ‘The Book of Mormon’ Musical Has Gone From America’s Darling to America’s Latest Problem The Inverse of the Mormon Story – Religion…

Posted: at 2:16 am

This year marks the tenth anniversary of The Book of Mormon the musical on Broadway. If this show were an actual Mormon, a tenth is what would be given away as a tithe to God. Thanks to the pandemic, thats more or less whats happened. The Book of Mormon cast and crew closed its doors in March 2020 and will open them again this Novemberone year for an act of God plus eight months given to the devil in the details.

The details, in this case, have to do with race. During the course of the Broadway shutdown, Black actors from The Book of Mormon petitioned the shows creative team to rewrite parts of the hit musical they felt furthered harmful racial stereotypes of Africa and Africans. This is no small ask. Anyone familiar with The Book of Mormon is likely familiar with its capacity for rudeness. The cartoonish world of the shows creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone paints white Mormonism and Black Africa with brushes so broad they blend both the ludicrous and the actual. Broadway audiences have sometimes had a hard time telling these apart.

Some sincere tenets of the shows Mormon missionaries often sound hilariously inflated to an outsider, while the war-torn and corrupt Uganda where theyre proselytizing remains flat, one-note, and unimaginative. To write out the shows insensitive portrayals of, well, everyone is in some ways to ask for a different show entirely. So be it, many say. The world has changed its tune about this one-time monster hit. Weve developed new languages to name indecencies and grown spines to say them out loud. A tithe seems appropriate. Ten years is a long time to be on top without giving something back.

The trajectory of The Book of Mormon from Americas Broadway darling to Americas latest problem traces an inverted path Mormonism itself took in this country. Born in 1830 in upstate New York, Mormonism spent much of the nineteenth century retreating further and further into Americas middle spaces in the face of rejection and violence. Mormons practiced polygamy and built communities of shared resourcesqualities that historian Paul Reeve has shown disqualified this almost totally white religion from the protections of whiteness.

Looking but not acting white in nineteenth-century America meant not being white. And, in twentieth-century America, the musical stage became one of the more important spaces where Mormonisms racialized identity was litigated in the court of public opinion. Operettas and vaudevilles marked Mormons the villains, often linked socially and racially with Muslims and other social pariahs at the time associated with China and Africa.

It wasnt until the middle of the twentieth century that Mormonism put forward a narrative of itself that flipped the script on its racial identity. The Church dropped polygamy and opened its arms wide to America. Mormons became linked with the highest favors of middle-class whitenessindustrious, capitalist, monogamous. Their social retribution even took shape through the very mechanism that had once set them apart: musical theater. Mormons developed a dynamic culture and practice of musical theater that persists today, which importantly set the stage for Broadways satirical, full-circle swing back to Mormons in 2011over 180 years and several iterations later, Mormonism was back in New York where it had started.

Mormons were something of an easy target in 2011, what with the Mormon Churchs opposition to marriage equality and Mitt Romneys seemingly picture perfect life running perpendicular to a nation paying increased attention to Americas imperfections. Contrary to the source of their ridicule in the nineteenth century, twenty-first-century Mormons were now too white, too American, too representational of values receding into a problematic past.

Mormons found few defenders when The Book of Mormon came out of Broadways gates swinging; left to its own devices, the Church made lemonade by taking out ads in the Playbill. Youve seen the play, boasted one, now read the book. Clever. But it might as well have been a postcard from the nineteenth century. Here we were again, Mormons back on stage, losing a battle of wills with a country unsure of the terms of its belonging.

America has found other villains in the intervening years. The #BlackLivesMatter and #MeToo movements trended in 2013 and 2017, bringing a new urgency to conversations about racial violence and sexual assault. How those topics are depicted on stage matters to a heightened degree. What no one could have predicted is just how much the musicals imagined Africa would in ten years look like todays very real America. Ugandans in The Book of Mormon are facing an epidemic (in the case of the show its AIDS). They bend to superstition and choose sexual assault as a remedy. In the real world, Americans suffering our own pandemic reject scientific reason and resort to eating horse de-wormer. This is the world The Book of Mormons curtains open out to in a few weeks. Its difficult to imagine a more glaring and deeply unfunny satire than the one were living through.

Which is to say that The Book of Mormon puts identity at the center of its humor in ways that are much riskier in 2021 than they were even ten years ago, its jokes presuming too much idealization for whiteness and what it represents. Like actual Mormons, then, the satirical musicals carefully constructed trajectory into Americas heart now seems miscalculated. In positioning Mormonisms exaggerated whiteness and bright-eyed Disney demeanor against an invented Africa, equally buffoonish and gullible, the musical took too much pleasure in punching down and now looks too much like the thing it tried to laugh off. Whiteness, once the musicals cause clbre, is now its liability. It took Mormons most of the twentieth century to chart an exponential path from problematically not white enough to problematically too white. The musical spoofing them took only ten years to do the exact opposite.

As for Mormons, they actually dont exist anymorenot in name anyway. In 2018 the Churchs leadership dropped the once derogatory moniker its nineteenth-century enemies gave them, emphasizing instead the mouthful of a name given them by God: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (or Latter-day Saints for short). In November when The Book of Mormons protagonist Elder Price belts the phrase I am a Mormonthe five note leitmotif itself taken from the now defunct Mormon musical drama The Hill Cumorah Pageanthe will be singing of ghosts. The Mormons are gone. They took account of the last ten years and tithed something of themselves away. A tithe is a sacrifice, after allan opportunity to move through the world with a little less baggage and a measure of greater intention.

Now we watch to see if the musical will follow suit. Its actors petitioned for a show that takes seriously the systemic and racial inequality in theatre. No one is going back on stage until they feel great about it, promised Matt Stone. Its been ten years a Mormon and now a tithe is on the table, a down payment on a more just and equitable world. What the musical chooses to give away will say a lot about the world it wants to hold onto.

3-D Reconstruction Reveals the Faces of Three Ancient Egyptian Mummies – Smithsonian

Scientists used DNA analysis of mummies from ancient Egypt to reconstruct the faces of three men buried more than 2,000 years ago. Parabon NanoLabs

In a feat seemingly straight out of The Mummy movies, DNA is helping researchers reanimate the faces of people who lived more than 2,000 years ago. As Mindy Weisberger reports for Live Science, scientists used genetic information taken from three ancient Egyptian mummies to produce digital images of what the men might have looked like at age 25.

Residents of Abusir el-Meleq, an ancient Egyptian city south of Cairo, the men died between 1380 B.C.E. and 450 C.E. A team from Parabon NanoLabs presented the trios facial reconstructions at the International Symposium on Human Identification in September.

[T]his is the first time comprehensive DNA phenotyping has been performed on human DNA of this age, says Parabon, a Virginia-based company that typically uses genetic analysis to help solve cold cases, in a statement.

To approximate the mens faces, researchers used DNA phenotyping, which predicts individuals physical appearance based on genetic markers. (Phenotyping can suggest subjects skin, hair and eye color, but as Caitlin Curtis and James Hereward wrote for the Conversationin 2018, the process has its limitations.) The team determined the mummies other characteristics through examination of their physical remains, reports Hannah Sparks for the New York Post.

Parabon used DNA taken from the mummies in 2017 to create the 3-D images. Thatearlier study, led by scientists at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History in Germany, marked the first time researchers successfully extracted DNA from ancient mummiesa tantalizing prospect long considered more myth than science, wrote Ben Panko for Smithsonian magazine at the time.

[Scholars] were generally skeptical about DNA preservation in Egyptian mummies, due to the hot climate, the high humidity levels in tombs and some of the chemicals used during mummification, which are all factors that make it hard for DNA to survive for such a long time, study co-author Stephan Schiffels told Tracy Staedter of Live Science in 2017.

The images released by Parabon show faces similar to modern Mediterranean and Middle Eastern individuals rather than modern Egyptians. Based on phenotyping, the team suggests that the mummies had light brown skin with dark hair and eyes.

According to the statement, Parabons 3-D facial reconstructions are highly consistent with the earlier genome analysis, which concluded that ancient Egyptians shared more ancestry with Near Easterners than present-day Egyptians, who received additional sub-Saharan admixture in more recent times.

In 2017, study co-author Johannes Krause, a paleogeneticist at the University of Tbingen in Germany, told the Washington Posts Ben Guarino that the assessment showed complete genetic continuity across 1,300 years. In other words, though their kingdom was conquered by a succession of outside powers, the ancient Egyptians included in the analysis didnt really intermix with invaders.

After predicting the three mens likely phenotypes, the Parabon team searched the companys database for people whose DNA closely aligned with the ancient Egyptians, reports Leslie Katz for CNET. Drawing on information pulled from the database, the researchers modeled the probable width, height and depth of the mummies heads and facial features. A forensic artist took over the process from there.

Its great to see how genome sequencing and advanced bioinformatics can be applied to ancient ... samples, says Parabons director of bioinformatics, Ellen Greytak, in the statement.

Speaking with CNET, Greytak adds, This study was an exciting proof-of-concept of how much we can learn about ancient people from their DNA.
