Health New Zealand and Mori Health Authority board members announced – Stuff.co.nz

Posted: September 24, 2021 at 11:26 am

The Government has announced the interim boards of Health New Zealand and the Mori Health Authority.

The Government announced it would abolish all 20 District Health Boards and create a single health organisation, in a sweeping plan to centralise New Zealands fragmented healthcare system and end the postcode lottery of care, in November.

The interim board members will help create the structure of the new entities with the new system to start on July. Legislation on the changes will be introduced next month.

There are eight interim board members for Health New Zealand, including former National MP Amy Adams. The board will be chaired by Rob Campbell, who Health Minister Andrew Little said is a professional director with extensive union, public and private sector governance experience.

Health minister Andrew Little.

Two of its members are medically trained.

The Mori Health Authority will be led by Sharon Shea, chair of the Bay of Plenty District Health Board, and Tipa Mahuta, the deputy chair of the Counties Manukau District Health Board. It has a total of eight board members. Shea will also sit on the Health New Zealand board.

Little said Thursdays announcement was another step towards a future health system where everyone has access to consistent, high quality health services when and where they need it.

Associate Health Minister Peeni Henare said the new Mori health authority would be a game changer for our people.

Its not about creating a separate system for Mori, he said.

Health New Zealand will bring together the countrys 20 DHBs, a workforce of about 80,000, an annual operating budget of $20 billion and an asset base of about $24 billion.

The Mori Health Authority will work alongside Health New Zealand with a joint role in developing system plans, commissioning for primary and community services, and will commission kaupapa Mori services.

It will also work alongside the Ministry of Health to develop strategies and policies that work for Mori.

Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield said the reforms gave the health system the opportunity to build on and amplify the changes it has undergone over the course of the Covid-19 pandemic.

It is an exciting time and I am looking forward to working with the new boards and new chairs, he said.

Stephen McKernan, the director of the reform's transition unit and the former Director-General of Health, said the reforms were a major undertaking but had widespread support.

The transition months ahead, and years beyond, will pose many challenges, he said.

MLB Best Bets: Baseball Picks, Predictions, Odds to Consider on DraftKings Sportsbook for September 23 – DraftKings Nation

Posted: at 11:20 am

Its Thursday, and that not only means the weekend is around the corner, it means weve got plenty of baseball on the docket. Ive taken a look at the entire card and I think Ive picked out three winners.

Here are my best MLB bets to consider on DraftKings Sportsbook.

All odds provided by DraftKings Sportsbook and all odds subject to change.

Okay, so this game doesnt technically fall on the night slate, but there arent very many options to choose from. The Giants have won 15 of their last 19 to fend off the Dodgers out in the NL West, and while it might feel like this hot streak will eventually come to an end, the matchup here couldnt be better.

Yu Darvishs numbers have been downright ugly ever since his spin rates took a hit with the leagues crackdown on foreign substances this summer, posting an ERA over six in each of the last three months. While he did shut down the Cardinals last time out, there are plenty of underlying numbers that would indicate St. Louis isnt very mighty offensively, throwing cold water on the outing. The Giants just touched up Darvish for eight runs a little over a week ago, and have the second-highest wRC+ in baseball over the last two weeks. This will be a tough test, and one Darvish should fail. We dont even have to get into how good Logan Webb has been, and how poor the Padres have hit lately.

With a short slate, were going to have to do things like bet on Connor Overton. Now, the Pirates opener has made it 11 23 innings without allowing a run this season, with solid strikeout numbers and very few hits allowed. Since coming over from the Blue Jays, hes been solid in limiting the damage every time out, and in his lone start he went three scoreless innings. Behind him, the Pirates bullpen has actually been decent of late, with a 3.88 ERA over the last two weeks.

The Phillies bats have been relatively cool with a 97 wRC+ over that same span, and have been particularly quiet in this series. I expect a low-scoring game given this matchup and given Aaron Nola is riding some great momentum into this start against a bad lineup.

Would you believe that over the last week, its been the Twins out-performing the Blue Jays at the plate? It hasnt been close, either, with Minnesota ranking inside the top 10 in wRC+ and the Jays finding themselves in 23rd.

Toronto just went through it trying to take down the Rays, and really struggled against their bevy of fastball-slider two-pitch guys. Its not going to be much easier against Michael Pineda who, while not great this year, does feature an effective fastball-slider combination. Those two pitches have been haunting Toronto and just may stymie these cooling bats once again.

Steven Matz has been good since the All-Star break, but his 3.97 ERA in September is likely a result of poor peripherals like a .357 xwOBA on contact, which indicated a slight regression was coming.

Place your MLB bets at DraftKings Sportsbook and bet online by downloading the DraftKings Sportsbook app.

Put your knowledge to the test. Sign up for DraftKings and experience the game inside the game.

Opinion: Constant Sportsbook Advertising On TV Hard To Curb Legally – Legal Sports Report

Posted: at 11:20 am

After nearly eight long months without NFL football, we have once again been graced by Americas favorite gambling subject. If you live in a state with legal sports betting, there is no way you could not have known via sportsbook advertising that football is back.

Advertising dollars are flowing freely in states across the country as DraftKings and FanDuel try to keep their place on top of the sports betting universe, and everyone else is trying to win over customers.

The advertisements are so ubiquitous if you went to sleep in September 2015 and woke up last week, you might not have noticed a difference except that daily fantasy which seemingly was always a placeholder has been replaced by sportsbook.

The advertising is annoying, and it is everywhere: television, radio, buildings, and the subway. Its ubiquity recently drew the ire of the director of the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement, David Rebuck, on a webinar hosted by gaming supplier GeoComply.

Rebuck highlighted three areas of concern with regards to sportsbook advertising:

As LSR reported, Rebuck warned operators, stating:

Dont allow your marketing staff to operate unchecked. They can get you in a lot of trouble because they have different objectives to you. They are not thinking about compliance. We understand the business need. They want to attract people and be creative but they cannot be unchecked.

If they are, they will be checked by us and it will happen in a way you wont be happy with.

Rebuck even noted that promotions could be blocked until the DGE pre-approves them.

The big challenge for regulators is that the situation already made it to the point where it is. Daily fantasy advertising in 2015 only really came to a head after the then-New York Attorney General targeted DraftKings and FanDuel under a consumer protection legal theory.

But unlike in 2015 with a virtually unregulated product, sports betting is now a regulated product with a set of rules in place for operators. So tamping down what is already happening can be quite a challenge; justask the UK.

Limiting advertising in the United States is more challenging than in other legal gaming jurisdictions around the world because the First Amendment permits a wide variety of speech even if regulators might not like it. Yet despite the First Amendment, there are several potential avenues to reel in the out-of-control media blitz.

As wewrote (with a pretty solid prediction) that this issue would become a focal point less than a month after the Supreme Court struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, various jurisdictions around the world place heavy restrictions on gambling operators ability and means of advertising, But in the United States, that is harder.

The first threshold that the government has to meet mandates that to restrict commercial speech of the variety that sports betting advertising is, the government must show:

Regarding Rebucks complaints about confusing terms and conditions, regulators would generally be free to enact bans on false or misleading advertisements, as the Supreme Courts jurisprudence has declined to extend commercial speech protection to false and misleading advertising.

Two previous efforts to ban gambling advertising have been struck down at the Supreme Court: first in the 1993 case, the U.S. v. Edge Broadcasting, and then again in 1999, inGreater New Orleans Broadcasting Association v. U.S.

With that said, regulators might be able to craft restrictions in a way that satisfies the rational basis test that a court is likely to apply.

However, in order for a policy restricting advertising to satisfy constitutional scrutiny, it would likely need to be carefully tied to the governments objectives and be narrow in scope.

While an outright ban on sports betting advertising is unlikely to satisfy First Amendment scrutiny (nor was that what Rebuck mentioned,) various vice industries have curtailed their advertising voluntarily. Most notably, the tobacco industry ceased many types of advertising as part of their 1998 Master Settlement Agreement with 46 states.

Other industries, notably in alcohol, largely regulate advertising via self-regulatory organizations. As membership is voluntary, these self-regulatory bodies have the ability to regulate without the same constraints as the government. This is a dominant model of regulation in many professional industries including law, and securities dealers.

Indeed, self-regulation is likely the preferred means to address a maturing US sports betting industry, whether via the American Gaming Association or some other organization. However, until the industry can establish that it is competently able to self-govern, it will always face a threat of a policy being imposed.

It is also worth noting that the permissive (rather than right-based) nature of licensing could allow regulators some leeway to impose restrictions more easily than a new law with severe restrictions on advertising. However, attempting to impose restrictions after licenses have been issued would likely be met with challenges from operators who met the conditions of licensure at the time of application.

The best-case scenario is that the sports betting universe can come up with a plan to self-regulate, either under an existing apparatus or a new apparatus.

However, it is not clear, given what has happened with other governing bodies in related spaces, if everyone in the industry wants to play by the same rules at this time.

FanDuel Sportsbook has industry-leading odds that users have been loving ever since online sports betting opened in the United States. This FanDuel Colts vs Titans promo offers new users the chance to bet a maximum of $5 on either the Colts or Titans and cash $150 if the team they pick wins! Seems pretty simple right? Lets dive into the easy registration process at FanDuel, followed by how to claim this promo.

>> Bet $5 on Either the Colts or Titans, Win $150 if the Team you Pick Wins at FanDuel! <<

Lucky enough for Tennessee online sports bettors, they can get their home team at +3000 odds this weekend. After a big comeback win over the Seahawks in Week 2, can they take down their division foe at home?

Since the Titans are the favorite at -250, sports bettors would have to bet a lot more on their regular odds to profit $150. To be exact, bettors would have to bet about $377 at -250 to profit $150 on the Titans moneyline. The Colts, have a little bit more value at +205, however, it looks like Jacob Eason will bet getting the start at quarterback. However, sports bettors would have to bet, just $73 at +205 to profit $150 on the Colts moneyline.

There are two approaches on how to use this promo Colts vs Titans FanDuel promo. If youre looking to play it safe, take the Titans with this Bet $5, Win $150. However, keep in mind that the road team has covered the last five Colts vs Titans matchups. So, if you take the Titans with this promo, look into hedging on the Colts moneyline as well. This way, no matter what happens, bettors will end up with a profit regardless.

Ask Scary Mommy: My Childfree Friends Never Invite Me Out And I Have Major FOMO – Scary Mommy

Posted: at 11:19 am

Scary Mommy and Westend61/Getty

This week: What do you do when you resent your childfree friends because youre jealous of them? Email [emailprotected]

Dear Scary Mommy,

Im a 28-year-old mom to a super sweet one-year-old girl. Im also the first one in my friend group to have a baby. Im also a single mom and my parents live an hour away, so I dont have a ton of babysitting optionsespecially during a pandemic. My friends are all still single and go out every weekend like single people do. I know they love me and they love my daughter, but seeing their Instagram photos and seeing how much fun they all have without me really sucks. Obviously theres nothing I can do, I made the choice to become a mom and I wouldnt change a thing. I just miss my old life, and having carefree fun with my friends. They also never invite me to tag along, which I get, but manit hurts. How do I deal with this?

Learning how to be completely selfless for the first time is truly the hardest part of parenting, because it encompasses everything. Its absolutely understandable and valid that youre feeling left out and envious. Who wouldnt? Youve had to say goodbye to that part of your life, or at least youve had to put a pause on it. Adapting to a huge transition like the one youve undergone during the last year or two is incredibly challenging, and it only makes sense that youd feel wistful for the time in your life when you werent solely responsible for sustaining and protecting a tiny human life.

While I do not think that motherhood does not equal instant martyrdomwe were all whole ass people with interests, hobbies, and relationships before we had childrenyour child is still very, very little and very, very dependent on you. People who arent parents cant truly understand what that means, but your friends understand enough about your situation to know you cant go out with them every weekend.

That being said, Im a little bummed that you havent mentioned that any of your friends has offered to sit with your little one while you grab a drink or lunch with another friend. If youre willing (and you trust it), Id ask one of them to help. Chances are, they just havent considered it out of oblivion.

Aside from that, if there are any colleges or daycare centers nearby, check out the early childhood education majors/teachers in your area. I know thats a babysitter goldmine in my town. There are websites out there that conduct background searches and require clearances, etc., before they allow people to care for kids. Its also extremely within your bounds to require a sitter to be vaccinated.

You may not have a whole village, but we all need someone. I hope you find someone you can rely on so you can ease your FOMO and find some time for yourself.

We need to stop describing women based on their maternal status – The Independent

Posted: at 11:19 am

I was 27 when the status of my womb became fodder for casual comment. Unfortunately, I hadnt been copied into the announcement that my parental status was now a conversational free-for-all.

Id got used to the better get a move on! half-jokes from acquaintances at awkward family events, but I was 35 when I realised the tone of remarks had shifted. Something unspoken had happened, some silent tide had turned and the sentiment around my expected motherhood transitioned from jolly but chastening encouragement to the mournful, pitying recognition of impossibility.

I was at a funeral when a family member informed me that I would regret not having children. It was an unsolicited remark that probably reflected the experiences of the speaker more than their understanding of my circumstances. They couldnt possibly have understood I hadnt told them anything. They knew I didnt have children and that was enough for them to pronounce on my future: one stained by absence and remorse. That week, I grieved not only for the person whod died but also for the fertility Id lost and the children I would never have.

I was in an accident and emergency waiting room, in the midst of miscarriage, when one of the strangers sitting next to me opened a conversation by asking if I had children. I knew she meant well and intended no harm by her question but it ached nonetheless. The baby that was still inside me had been my little mate. I loved them. Carrying them with me gave me a revelatory feeling of strength and power. While we were together, I felt fortified. At an antenatal appointment just a few weeks before, the midwife had beamed when she saw me: Dont you look the picture of health! For the first time in my life, I agreed with a compliment and felt it was true. I felt full of life. I was full of life. Until I wasnt.

Miscarriages are regular occurrences. So many women have experienced pregnancy loss that Ive felt almost embarrassed to be distressed the enormity of my grief felt self-indulgent in the vastness of loss. This week is World Childless Week an initiative that aims to raise awareness of the childless not by choice (CNBC) community.

According to World Childless Week organisers, one in five women at the age of 45 does not have children and 90 per cent of them are childless not by choice. I think the organisation is doing essential and much-needed work but the CNBC community is one to which I wish I didnt belong.

The labels assigned to those without children feel abrasive, chafing wounds Im desperately trying to heal. The term childless, for example, feels dark. For me, it not only reinforces the idea that motherhood is the norm, but also centres on a deficiency, a lack, an absence.

Childfree is a term generally considered to be a more positive alternative especially for those whove chosen not to have kids but it also feels difficult. It suggests liberation rather than loss but it also focuses on maternity even if the deficit is given an affirmative spin. So much of the discourse around motherhood assumes that maternity is the pinnacle of womanhood, the fulfilment of femininity that we cant seem to find language that doesnt bolster potentially damaging ideas about women.

In our pro-natalist culture, maternity is so entrenched in our cultural understanding of femininity that womens maternal status is constantly centred, questioned, criticised, and discussed. Dr Dawn Llewellyn at the University of Chester has researched motherhood and voluntary childlessness in Britain. She suggests theres a cultural maternal expectation that constructs women as maternal bodies, which silences and marginalises women from articulating their complex relationship with motherhood and childlessness. I think Dr Llewellyn summarises my issue: the expectation of motherhood can be as damaging as the loss of pregnancy.

Frankly, I dont want to be childless or childfree. I dont want to be viewed through the prism of mother-never-to-be with the sad smiles, hand-pats and pitying looks that come as part of an unwanted package. Perhaps its time to chuck the labels and stop describing women according to their maternal status.

Winless French rugby club on verge of unwanted sporting immortality – Telegraph.co.uk

Posted: at 11:18 am

It was a long time coming, but all bad things come to an end. The streak is over. Last Saturday, Worcester Warriors finally won a Premiership match.

By beating London Irish 36-24 at Sixways, Worcester ended a run of 18 straight league defeats, a sequence stretching back to the corresponding fixture last November. Amateurs. With the Premiership ringfenced now and for the foreseeable future, Worcester had the opportunity to do something incredible and set a losing run to last for the ages, but they threw it all away. And for what? To finish 10th or 11th when history was within their grasp? Pathetic.

If you want to see how it is really done then you should look over the Channel to Agen, the losers losers. According to some stats meticulously researched by (and shamelessly stolen from) my Francophile colleague, Charles Richardson, Agen's wait for the saccharine taste of a league victory will have stretched to 583 days by the time they play Mont de Marsan in ProD2, French rugbys second tier, on Saturday. For context, when they won won 30-16 away to Brive on February 22 2020, Covid-19 was firmly lodged in the foreign news section of the papers. Apparently there were fears that it could hit Primark and Asos supply chains. Thankfully nothing more came to pass...

But theres more. Their wait for a home league victory goes back even farther 700 plus days to October 19 2019 when Stade Francais were thumped 27-19, at which point most people would have thought the Wuhan lab was a hip-hop tribute group. It is quite remarkable to trace their form over this near two-year period. They start the Top 14 season strongly. At the start of the 2019-20 season, they beat Brive and moneybags Montpellier, draw away at Racing 92 and claim a number of bonus points. At which point, not only do the wheels start to come off, but the whole vehicle goes through the central reservation and bursts into flames.

Yet, despite this downward spiral, Agen were saved from relegation, with the pandemic curtailing the 2019-20 campaign. Once sport resumed in France, their trajectory continued in a vertical descent. The final standings read: played 26, lost 26, scored 315, conceded 1101. The only blot on their copybook was two losing bonus points, which prevented from gaining a big fat zero in the points column, but still set all manner of ignominious Top 14 records (although it was still one point more than London Welshs 2014-15 Premiership campaign).

Relegation can often allow clubs to press the regroup and reset. Reconstruction work at their Stade Armandie began over the summer which provided a decent enough metaphor. However, their new campaign began in the exact same manner the last as finished. Four games, four defeats, including to newly promoted Bourg-en-Bresse. To make matters worse, Saturdays opponents Mont de Marsan are top of the table.

Located in Frances south-west rugby heartland, Agen have a proud history. They have won the French league eight times and reached the final as recently as 2002. French icon Philippe Sella represented them for 13 years.

Jeff Bezos Reverse Aging Mission: Chasing Immortality And Beating Death – ED Times

Posted: at 11:18 am

Rejuvenating life and defeating the natural process of death may have been heard of in Marvel movies, until now, when Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, after conquering space, is now planning to seek immortality.

As strange as it may sound, Jeff Bezos, following his retirement and space expedition, plans to invest in an anti-aging research start-up focused on reprogramming human cells. According to MIT Tech Review, Altos Labs, a research-based business formed in early 2021, claims to have Jeff Bezos as an investor.

The firm is committed to figuring out how to reverse the aging process. It has been recruiting scientists with yearly salaries of $1 million for this reason.

But how will the Altos Labs function in the process of reverse aging? Lets go through it in greater depth.

While many age-focused biotech firms aim to tackle disorders linked with aging, Altos Labs aspires to postpone death by renewing the whole human body on a cellular level.

Reprogramming of human cells would include injecting proteins into a cell that directs it to revert to a stem-cell-like condition. After demonstrating the approach in mice, scientist Shinya Yamanaka was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2012.

The firm, which has been established in the United States and the United Kingdom, intends to extend its research by establishing institutions in the Bay Area, San Diego, Cambridge, the United Kingdom, and Japan.

Altos Labs will also investigate Biological Clock technology, which was pioneered by aging expert Steve Horvath and allows for reliable measurement of the age of cells or whole organisms. The aging indicator would aid in determining the efficiency and impacts of any Altos Labs age-reversal medications.

While researchers believe that the encouraging outcomes shown in reprogrammed mice could someday be transferred to people, the anti-aging process is not that easy. It is probable that years of study will be required before age reversal in humans becomes a reality.

Only a few articles have been published on the subject so far, and the results arent all positive; while some mice did live longer following biological reprogramming, others acquired tumors known as teratomas as a result of the research.

Death, for those researching ways to extend human life, is not an inevitability; rather, it is a problem to be solved. If a victory is feasible in the next decades, it would undoubtedly herald a new frontier in human health as well as a new industry in life sciences with potentially unlimited possibilities.

How feasible is it for all of us to live longer? While wrinkles, grey hair, weak bones, and fine lines are natural, can million-dollar research beat this natural process of death?

If scientists are successful in their research, we could add 50 years to the human lifetime. The more the research progresses, the more years one may add to ones age.

This is just the beginning of the end.

Thinking economically, beating death will be the total annihilation of the planet. With a high birth rate and extremely low death rate, soon, the planet will be suffering from overpopulation.

It will be impossible to live freely owing to high population density, low population quality, and heavy use of natural resources for livelihood, which will result in Global Warming, climate change, and questions about sustainability.

The COVID-19 pandemic is the most visible illustration of how a small virus can cause havoc on our lives. And vast projects like anti-aging missions can simply lead to destruction, if not planned properly.
