How to beat your squad at poker or blackjack – We Are The Mighty
Posted: September 16, 2021 at 6:42 am
When fighter jets are scrambled to intercept enemy or unidentified planes, they have a range of options, from immediate lethal fires to trying to contact the rogue plane via radio, depending on the situation. One of the options is to use their plane to conduct the headbutt of the other plane.
The maneuver is sweet, but not nearly as metal as it sounds.
A U.S. Navy F/A-18E Super Hornet, like the ones that headbutted and then attacked and destroyed Syrian ground attack aircraft in June, 2017.
(U.S. Navy Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class William Rosencrans)
There are a number of maneuvers which have been described under the umbrella of the term, headbutt, but none of them include physical contact between the two planes.
Last year, the headbutt maneuver got press coverage after F-18Es intercepted hostile ground attack jets over Syria in June. There, the U.S. fighters conducted one of the most aggressive forms of the maneuver. Two American jets flew close to one another, with one trailing behind. The jets wakes combine and become even stronger, and the two jets fly in front of the targeted jet in order to destabilize it with the violent wake. They also dropped flares.
Basically, the two American jets use the winds from their own passage to rock the targeted jet. When that failed to dissuade the Syrian Su-22 from bombing U.S. backed forces, the F/A-18E shot down the Syrian jet.
(AirWolfHound, CC BY-SA 2.0)
Another version of the headbutt, usually seen when the Air Force is trying to get the attention of a friendly or civilian aircraft, has the headbutting jet fly well underneath the target aircraft, then fly up nearly vertical about 500 feet ahead of the friendly planes nose, nearly guaranteeing that the pilot will see the U.S. fighter without forcing the pilot to fly though a violent or dangerous wake.
This is only done if ground controllers and the fighter pilots have been unable to establish radio communications with the aircraft, and the aircraft is flying into restricted airspace.
A third version of the maneuver is very similar to the first, but has only one jet flying ahead of the targeted aircraft. This has two advantages. First, less wake is created, meaning that the targeted aircraft is less likely to encounter trouble in flight as a result of the maneuver. Second, it allows the wingman of the headbutting aircraft to loiter either hidden or in a good attack position, ready to move in for a kill if necessary.
This version of the maneuver is often accompanied by the release of flares in order to drive home the point that the U.S. jet is trying to communicate with the targeted aircraft.
While these maneuvers have certainly existed for a long time, the American emphasis on them has grown since the attacks of September 11, 2001. Suddenly, an Air Force that had always been aimed at foreign enemies had to be prepared to assess threats in the domestic airspace much more often.
Like all U.S. military forces, especially when operating with and near civilians, the U.S. pilots wanted a clear escalation of force procedure with ways to assess whether a civilian aircraft was a threat before they were forced to shoot it down.
F-16s like this one can fly well over the speed of sound, but have to be prepared to slow down enough to communicate with civilian planes visually, whether its by headbutting them, rocking their wings, or flashing their lights.
(U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Kathryn R. C. Reaves)
This required the pilots to develop new skills, like additional levels of warning an aircraft that it was entering restricted airspace. It also led to pilots of fighter jets that could break the sound barrier suddenly being worried about how they could slow down enough to read a Cessnas tail number.
If that doesnt sound challenging, realize that many of the single-engine planes flying around U.S. skies are considered fast if they can clear 175 knots, roughly equal to 200 mph. Meanwhile, F-16s can fly 1,600 mph. If a fighter is checking on a slow-moving, single-engine plane, they may need to fly (at least) 100 mph faster than their target simply to prevent a stall.
Now imagine trying to get a phone number off of a yard sign while your friend is driving 100 mph.
Takes practice.
But if they cant get into radio contact with a plane and cant properly identify it from its tail number, they still need options to get its attention without shooting it down. Headbutting, making radio contact, flashing their landing lights, and dropping flares are among such techniques, but theyre not the only ones. In fact, in at least one tense situation over restricted airspace, a Coast Guard helicopter flew ahead of a civilian plane with a whiteboard telling it to change to a specific radio frequency.
Thanks to all these efforts, the U.S. Air Force has never had to shoot down a civilian plane, and theyve gained experience using a valuable tool for deterring enemy planes near U.S. forces abroad. But, like the events in June 2017 demonstrated, the headbutt wont always scare the enemy away and American pilots still might have to get their hands dirty.

Common Poker Tells To Look For at the 2021 WSOP – PokerNews.com
Posted: at 6:42 am
September 13, 2021Matthew Pitt
The 2021 World Series of Poker (WSOP) commences on September 30, which marks the return of the world's longest-running live poker festival. Thousands of poker players from around the world will descend on Las Vegas, sharing a common goal: to win a coveted WSOP bracelet.
Those bracelet hopefuls will do everything in their power and within the rules of the game to get their hands on poker's most sought-after piece of poker jewelry. Picking up on their opponents' poker tells is one way of increasing their chances of WSOP glory.
Poker is a game played with incomplete information; that is, we only ever find out our opponents' holdings if the hand gets to showdown or our opponent decided to reveal their hole cards. As poker players, we base our decision-making on several factors, including bet sizes, our opponents' playing styles, stack sizes, and everyone's position at the table. The more advanced live poker players use tells as an additional source of information, but what is a poker tell?
Poker tells refer to physical or verbal actions that players make at the table, which often give away crucial information about their hands. Most physical tells are involuntary, and players are not aware they are making them; wilier opponents give off fake tells as a way of creating the outcome they want; more on that later.

Some say that people's eyes are a gateway into the soul. That is a little deep, but watching players' eyes when playing poker is definitely something you should incorporate into your game. The eyes give away much information; it is no coincidence that many poker players wear sunglasses when playing poker!
Players who look you directly in the eyes tend to have a strong hand. Them looking squarely into your hand conveys strength because they are confident in their hand. Conversely, those who are weak or even bluffing often struggle to maintain eye contact. This is because they are less comfortable in the current situations and are essentially lying to you. How often have you not told the truth and struggled to maintain eye contact? There you go.
WSOP 2021 Schedule Released: 88 Bracelet Events, Sept. 30 - Nov. 23
A player's hands and how they handle their chips can be a strong tell of how strong or weak their holding is. Watching an opponent handle their chips and cards sometimes reveals hands that are trembling. This tends to happen with the more inexperienced players than seasoned pros.
It is almost impossible to fake trembling hands convincingly, so it is a rather reliable poker tell. Shaking hands is a sign of nervousness in most people but can also show strength in the right circumstances. When deep into a large pot, someone with trembling hands is often holding an extremely strong hand. They are so excited about winning many chips that their hands shake due to the shot of adrenaline their body just gave them.
Furthermore, watch for when and how a player grabs their chips. Those players with stronger hands tend to reach and grab for their chips before the action reaches them. They simply cannot wait to commit more chips into the pot because of their strong holding. The opposite runs true, in that players with weaker holdings leave their stacks untouched.
Card protectors are common at the WSOP, so watch how your opponents use theirs. For example, they may immediately place their card protector on their hole cards after peaking at those cards or neglect to do sothe former hints at a playable hand, the latter not so much.
How long a player takes to act is one of the most common poker tells you will experience at the WSOP. Seasoned players try to take the same amount of time to act regardless of checking, calling, or raising; you should do the same because your quickness, or lack of it, gives away a ton of information.
Taking longer than usual to check usually means the player had an actual decision to make between checking or betting. This is an indication that they have some sort of playable hand. Typically, this is a drawing hand that they are contemplating semi-bluffing with or a medium-strength hand, such as an underpair or middle pair.
A quick check indicates a weak hand because they did not require much thinking time to conclude they were not putting more chips in the pot. Thinking players may check super-quick to lure you into a false sense of security before check-raising when you inevitably take the bait.
Anyone who calls a bet quickly usually has some sort of worthwhile hand, but not one they are too happy with. These tend to be mid-strength hands or drawing hands where they want to see the next street or get to showdown without bloating the pot.
When it comes to betting, someone beating you into the pot with a quick bet is often has a weaker hand. Their fast actions are designed to intimidate you and encourage you to fold. However, be wary of anyone taking their time before betting or raising because this can be a sign of significant strength. They are pondering the exact amount to bet to extract the most value from their hand.
Can You Know What Their Cards Are By the Way They Hold Their Eyes?
You need to be an observant person to pick up on poker tells. Furthermore, you need to use poker tells as part of your information gathering and not as the only component of it. Pay particular attention to the hands your opponents show down after acting a certain way. What did they do before and during a hand where they showed a strong holding. What about when they were caught bluffing? Build a mental database into your opponents' tendencies.
Also, be aware some players are incredibly clever and will act weak when strong and vice-versa.
Finally, do not only observe these tells in your opponents but be aware you may be giving off similar tells. Keep your actions uniform regardless of what you plan to do in the hand, and prevent opponents from picking up information about you and your holdings.
Continue your poker tells education with the selection of excellent strategy articles in the list below.

Live Poker in Europe Is Back and Poised to Boom – VegasSlotsOnline

The Cyprus lifehack
With the Europe/USA travel ban largely still in effect, this week large numbers of European players made their way to Mexico, Canada, Cuba, and Costa Rica. They are based there for two-week stays to meet the requirements to enter America in time for the upcoming World Series of Poker (WSOP).
For some high-stakes players, though, there is a curious life hack available. Despite higher COVID-19 case numbers, Cyprus is not on the US banned list. For that reason, the Merit Hotel, Casino and Spa in Cyprus has been their home for the past few weeks and likely the next few.
The Super High Roller Bowl drew some big names to the island, and most of those will also be in the mix for the Partypoker Millions North Cyprus Festival starting next week.
live poker is coming back with a vengeance
For the players who have decided to stay, there will be plenty of poker options in the coming months. With the vaccination rates steadily climbing, the restrictions all across Europe are loosening up. Casinos are reopening, and with that, live poker is coming back with a vengeance.
In Kings Casino, Rozvadov, the WSOPC just concluded with Italian pro Andrea Ricci taking down the 912-runner 1,700 ($2,010) Main Event for 236,489 ($279,673) and his first gold ring. Meanwhile, inBratislava, Germanys Maximilian Silz won the Pokercode Festival for 23,169 ($27,400).
In the UK, the Grosvenor Poker Tour (GUKPT) has been back for a while, having completed three of its eight legs.
In July, Euan McNicholas turned his very first GUKPT buy-in into the London title and a whopping 165,800 ($229,267). In August, Poker pro Rick Trigg outlasted 461 players to take down the GUKPT Manchester. Most recently, Steve Jelinek emerged from a record field of 607 to take down the GUKPT Coventry for 105,050 ($145,262). Leg 4 of the GUKPT will be in Leeds next week.
Kicking off this week is the much beloved Kings of Tallinn, billed as the biggest festival in Northern Europe. The Main Event starts tomorrow and runs until Sunday, September 19. The schedule is also jam-packed with mixed games and cash games running round the clock.
The Kings of Tallinn is a cant miss event, with something for everyone
VegasSlotsOnline News spoke with poker player and writer Jason Glatzer ahead of one of his favorite events in his hometown. The Kings of Tallinn is a cant miss event, with something for everyone and the juiciest cash games. Teresa (Nousiainen) does a fantastic job every year and the casino is easily the best venue in Northern Europe with amazing hospitality and action, Glatzer said.
The Olympic Park Casino and Hilton Tallinn Park is indeed a special venue, located right in the heart of the Estonian capital.
This week, Nick OHara took to the airwaves, announcing the International Poker Open (IPO) and, with that, the return of live poker to Ireland.
The popular TD and festival organizer went on Unibet Pokers topical poker web showThe Lock-Into discuss a whole host of subjects, not least of which was his excitement and anticipation for what is one of Europes longest-running and most popular poker events.
OHara was frank about the COVID-19 measures that would be in place. Vaccination certificates or negative PCR tests would be required at the door. Daily temperature checks would be administered and players with a high temperature would not be allowed in. Preventative measures would include closed dealer rotations (whereby each dealer will only alternate between four tables) and a requirement to hand-sanitize frequently. He also said he would have to wait and see what the governments position would be on mask-wearing at the time.
The IPO festival will be sponsored by Unibet Poker for the fourth time as it kicks off on October 20 and runs through October 25. The popular Unibet Open Tour will not be returning before 2022, but the Unibet DSO Tour is already on the road.
One of the earliest tours to go back on the road was the popular Unibet DeepStack Open (DSO). VegasSlotsOnline News spoke with the DSO creator, Alex Henry, who was very positive despite a tough couple of years. He said: It was a difficult period for sure, but one thing has not changed. The French absolutely love their poker and they come out in big numbers all over the country.
There have been three Unibet DSO events so far. In July, we had 696 players in Paris; in August, we had 400 in San Remo; and last week, we had 481 in Cannes, Henry added.
These are very promising numbers, but Henry is cognizant of the problems that can still arise. He explained: We had to cancel the event in Gujan Mestras, as the local rules meant that there could only be four players and the dealer on any table. That is obviously unworkable, but we hope to bring the DSO back there when the rules change.
While some regions are implementing stricter measures than others, there are some rules that apply to all of France. There is no plexiglass, but each player must present a sanitary pass and wear their mask at all times, Henry specified.
new players are injecting some new blood into the live poker scene
The DSO creator also noted how the pandemic has changed the demographics of who is playing live poker now. It seems like we have lost one category of recreational player the restaurant or small business owner. This is understandable as it has been a particularly painful time for them. What we didnt expect is how many new players would show up, having discovered poker for the first time during lockdown. It appears that, for now at least, these new players are injecting some new blood into the live poker scene.
The next DSO event on the schedule starts October 29 and runs until November 7 in Annecy.
Casino Sochi in Russia has been open for some time and in October, it will play host to the least talked about EPT on the schedule. Its no secret that PokerStars would prefer if this event didnt happen, but its contract with Casino Sochi which is imperative for its presence in the Russian online market allows the casino to call the shots on this one.
It is rumored that PokerStars may be making its return to the live circuit with EPT Prague, a staple of the European circuit for a decade. Nothing is confirmed as yet, but lets just say that booking a hotel in the Prague Hilton during the second week of December is nigh on impossible right now.
One iconic festival that is confirmed, however, is the Master Classics of Poker, which made the big announcement last week. The event will take place at the Holland Casino Amsterdam in November.
Every summer, the WSOP creates a Wimbledon effect, whereby casual players get the itch to play some poker. This years autumn WSOP is likely to have a similar effect, magnified by the fact that people have been cooped up, some are tanked up and, with the travel ban, a shorter WSOP trip from Europe is not possible.
For those reasons, it is reasonable to expect a boom time for live poker across Europe as poker players try to make up for lost time.

Willie Nelson Talks Playing Poker With Woody Harrelson and Owen Wilson – PokerTube

Willie Nelson, the 88-year-old country rock legend, was interviewed by Marren Morris for Jimmy Kimmel Live- the pair discussed his involvement with the cannabis industry, advice for raising kids on the road, and of course his famous weekly poker nights.
The On The Road Again singer was on the show to promote his new book- Letters To America. Speaking to the host over a video call from down in Texas, she asks how many years he and his close friend Woody Harrelson have been playing together.
Nelson and the host then took some time to discuss some non-poker topics- all of which reveal some greatly interesting aspects of the prolific activists life.
One such factoid, explained by the host, was one that she learned whilst opening for Nelson at the Santa Barbara Bowl a couple of years back.
She discovered that, surprisingly, Nelson and his band do not have any kind of setlist on stage with them. Instead, they opt simply to have a clock telling them how much time is left in the set. Nelson will just play whatever song he feels is right in a particular moment, and his well-rehearsed band will follow.
He explained that he has had kids on the bus his whole career. Most of them ended up picking up the music bug themselves and eventually went on to perform on stage with their star father.
Finally, the pair discussed his cannabis business Willies Reservewhich he started in 2015 after the plant became legal in a number of the states. The host thanked the company for supplying her with many goodies over the years- which was probably music to the ears of such a well know cannabis advocate.
If you are a fan of Nelsons music career, poker-playing, or wacky backy smoking then you are sure to enjoy his new book. For those itching to see the legend- he says he will be back with a brand new tour as soon as possible after finishing up his last couple of shows in Minnesota.

Radical Austria: Everything is Architecture – Announcements – E-Flux
Posted: at 6:41 am
In the exhibition Radical Austria Everything is Architecture, you will discover the mind-expanding, boundary-shifting and socially critical work of the Austrian avant garde in the 1960s and 70s. Members of this group did not allow themselves to be hemmed in by traditional design disciplines, preferring instead to create buildings, environments, objects, fashion, performances, furniture and even experiences. Radical Austria Everything is Architecture focuses on recent history with works that are even more topical and relevant today. The exhibition offers the first opportunity ever to experience the specific character of Austrias contribution to the international post-war avant garde in this way. It includes work by Coop Himmelb(l)au, Haus-Rucker-Co, Znd-Up, Walter Pichler, Valie Export, Hans Hollein, Angela Hareiter and Raimund Abraham. The exhibition is accompanied by a digital platform, The Third Floor.
Everything is architectureThe works, performances, installations, interventions, clothes, furniture, environments and architecture of groups like Coop Himmelb(l)au, Haus-Rucker-Co and Znd-Up, and of individual designers and artists such as Walter Pichler (19362012), Hans Hollein (19342014), Raimund Abraham (19332010) and Valie Export (1940), are responses to societal and technological developments. Whether optimistically and playfully or ominously and critically, they teased out the consequences of these developments for the futurethe one in which we now live. What makes the Austrian avant garde unique is its fascination for the body and the way its designs often extended beyond the drawing board: almost everything was actually executed and can be seen in the exhibition. The designer Hans Hollein argued that everything is architecture, and with that notion in mind the featured designers gave concrete shape to their world-view in every imaginable discipline, from inflatable habitations to performances, fashion to furniture.
The body: departure and destination pointThe human body plays a central role in Radical Austria Everything is Architecture: as the vehicle of self-expression in performances, the subject of uncompromising experimentation and, not least, the physical departure and destination point of social, technological and spatial developments. We find it, for instance, in the suits and helmets of Coop Himmelb(l)au, wearers of which are exposed to shocking images, smells and pressure. The helmets and furniture designed by Haus-Rucker-Co are an expression of psychedelic mind-expansion, while those of Walter Pichler highlight the chilling and alienating effects of technology. Fashion and design too become battlefields for shifting views of sexuality in the work of Raimund Abraham and Znd-Up, amongst others. The feminist artist Valie Export commented caustically on the same theme, having men in the street touch her breasts in Tapp-und-Tast Kino.
PrecursorsThe lack of inhibition combined with analysis made the Austrian avant garde not only one of the most radical of the 1960s and 70s, but also the forerunner of many of the developments playing out today in the area of internet and mediavirtual reality, for instanceand that of Posthumanism, in which human beings are no longer central but are being subsumed into a larger environment, shaped by different technologies. Radical Austria Everything is Architecture shows how these developments were already being thought about critically in Austria in the 1960s and 70s and how this came to be reflected in fashion, design and architecture.
Practical informationThe exhibition takes place in Design Museum Den Bosch, in the Netherlands. It is on show until October 3, 2021. Book your tickets here. The exhibition is accompanied by a digital platform, The Third Floor, containing articles, videos, podcasts and background information pertaining to themes of the exhibition.

Billions blown as Macau casino investors fold amid gambling review – Reuters
Posted: at 6:40 am
HONG KONG, Sept 15 (Reuters) - Shares of Macau casino operators on Wednesday shed as much as a third of their value, losing about $18 billion, as the government kicked off a regulatory overhaul that could see its officials supervising companies in the world's largest gambling hub.
With Macau's lucrative casino licences up for rebidding next year, the plan spooked a Hong Kong market already deep in the red after Beijing's regulatory crackdown on sectors from technology to education and property that sliced hundreds of billions of dollars off asset values.
Wynn Macau (1128.HK) led the plunge, falling as much as 34% to a record low, followed by a 28% tumble for Sands China (1928.HK). Peers MGM China (2282.HK), Galaxy Entertainment (0027.HK), SJM (0880.HK) and Melco Entertainment (0200.HK) all fell heavily, taking the drop to HK$143 billion ($18 billion).
U.S. casino companies also fell for the second straight day, losing as much as $4 billion in market capitalization on Wednesday, with Las Vegas Sands Corp (LVS.N) slumping to more than a year low, Wynn Resorts Ltd (WYNN.O) and MGM Resorts International (MGM.N), dropping 8% and 5%, respectively.
The slump came after Lei Wai Nong, Macau's secretary for economy and finance, gave notice on Tuesday of a 45-day consultation period on the gambling industry to begin from the following day, pointing to deficiencies in industry supervision.
Beijing, increasingly wary of Macau's acute reliance on gambling, has not yet said how the licence rebidding process will be judged.
"Margins will be crushed at the gambling capital of the world and that will drag down all the big casinos," said Edward Moya, senior market analyst at OANDA in New York.
Some Hong Kong stock analysts wasted little time in downgrading their view of near-term prospects for casino operators in the Chinese special administrative region, who must all rebid for licences when current permits expire in June 2022.
J.P. Morgan is downgrading to neutral or underweight all Macau gaming names from overweight, because of the tougher scrutiny on capital management and daily operations ahead of licence renewals, said analyst D.S. Kim.
"We admit it's only a 'directional' signal, while the level of actual regulation or execution still remains a moot point," he said, adding the news would have already put doubt in investors' minds.
Brokerage CFRA downgraded Wynn Resorts to "Strong Sell" from "Buy", citing heightened regulatory risks and said the review was a major overhang for the company as well as other operators.

At a news briefing on Tuesday, Lei detailed nine areas for the consultation, such as the number of licenses, better regulation and employee welfare, as well as having government representatives to supervise daily casino operations. read more
The government also plans to increase voting shares in gaming concessionaires for permanent residents of Macau, as well as more rules on transfer and distribution of profits to shareholders.
Discussions over the future of Macau's casino licences come amid rocky U.S.-China relations, leaving some investors fearing an edge for domestic players over U.S.-based casino operators.
The government has not singled out any U.S. players, but companies have moved to beef up the presence of Chinese or local executives as they position themselves more as Macau operators than foreign one.
Before licence expiry, operators have tried to strengthen corporate responsibility and diversify into non-gaming offerings to placate Beijing, which fears over-reliance on gambling.
Macau has boosted scrutiny of casinos in recent years, clamping down on illicit capital flows from mainland China and targeting underground lending and illegal cash transfers.
Beijing has also stepped up a war on cross-border flows of funds for gambling, hitting the funding of Macau's junket operators and their VIP customers.
In June, Macau more than doubled the number of gaming inspectors and restructured departments to boost supervision. read more
George Choi, a Citigroup analyst in Hong Kong, said while the public consultation document gave few details, the suggested changes benefit long-term sustainable growth, with "positive implications on the six casino operators".
However, he cautioned, "We will not be surprised if the market focuses only on the potentially negative implications, given the weak investor sentiment."
The consultation comes as Macau has struggled with a dearth of travellers because of coronavirus curbs since the start of 2020. While gambling revenues have picked up in recent months, they remain less than half of 2019 monthly figures.
