What kind of impact will lottery gaming have on the gambling industry? – Times of Malta

Posted: July 29, 2021 at 8:50 pm

Lottery gaming and gambling are essentially the same thing at the moment. People pay money to take their chance, in the hope of winning big. However, not many people think of them as the same right now.

There will be many people out there who say they are not a gambler, but they play the lottery on a regular basis. That may all be about to change though, as the lottery gaming industry is seemingly moving on, taking big steps forward and moving more towards the gambling sector.

In the past, people have only been able to play on their local lottery, games that usually come around once a week, and offer a fun chance to change your life for a small stake. That is no longer the case though, the lottery industry has opened up to a worldwide audience, players are no longer limited and the choice on offer is as good as it has ever been.

For example, those looking to play online lottery in India can access a wide range of international draws, giving more options than ever before, opening up huge jackpot prizes, and giving pretty much daily gaming to anyone who wants it.

When you say it like that, the lottery gaming industry is sounding more and more like the online gambling industry. But will this have any effect on the gambling industry? Will we see players moving away from casino gaming in the hope of playing the lottery more often and giving themselves more chances of winning a big prize?

The shift in the lottery gaming world is certainly going to improve its appeal. The first, and perhaps most important reason for this, is because regular play is now available. In the past, people have had one lottery open to them, which they have played every weekend.

However, after the game is done, they have to wait seven days before the next time they can get involved. In this time, people will either lose interest and not come back, or they will move onto other things, such as sports betting or casino gaming.

Now the lottery industry has a chance of keeping these players, letting them play lottery games as often as they like, and no risk losing them to other parts of the gambling industry. This wont happen to every single player, as some will like the variety that comes with playing just one lottery, but if there are people out there who prefer lottery and want more, those customers should get that and leave everything else they do.

There is also the chance to attract brand new players, who come on board because of the bigger and better service. A look at the latest entertainment news will see that there are many kinds of options for those looking to try something new. A full lottery service, with games from all over the world on a daily basis, would try and tap into that market.

If you see how competitive the players in the gambling industry are with each other, between the various casinos and sportsbooks we have, then it makes complete sense that they will fight back against lottery gaming.

This could lead to a variety of different things, and both casinos and sportsbooks could get involved. They may set up some kind of lottery style jackpot game themselves, we could see big chances to win on sports, more slot jackpot games, and other things.

The key if this happens is to offer something that feels like a lottery, with a very small stake and the chance to win a huge amount of money. This would give an option for those who like to do all different types of gambling. If lottery sites offer them just one option, but sportsbooks and casinos offer them multiple options, including something like a lottery, the latter has a chance of winning.

Sportsbooks and casinos wont be able to offer prizes such as big Mega Millions jackpots, but if they can give the impression of a lottery game, with a big prize, then it may work.

However the fall out goes between lottery providers, casinos and sportsbooks, the fact is that when lottery gaming goes worldwide, the entire gambling industry is going to be better for it. If people want to play multiple lottery games per week, and chase the very biggest jackpots, then they can do that.

If sportsbooks and casinos want to try and create something to compete with that, then their service will be even better because of it. Therefore, the future, whichever path you take, will only likely be better than what we have at the moment.

There is one potential issue, which is that we need to ensure the smaller lotteries around the world still survive. These provide great help to local charities, and if the industry moves so much that these disappear then this will not be good overall.

People will chase the biggest jackpots and want to be involved in the biggest games, but at the same time, the smaller games will need support. Provided this comes, and these stay in play, the future of lottery gaming looks as though it is going to be in a very good place.

GB gambling participation and at-risk population both fall in 2021 | Problem gambling – iGaming Business

Posted: at 8:50 pm

Participation in gambling in Great Britain dropped to 41.6% in June 2021, while those at risk of gambling-related harm also declined, according to the Gambling Commissions latest participation and problem gambling survey.

Overall participation in gambling during the four weeks prior to the survey in June fell to just 41.6%. This was a 3.5 percentage point decline from June 2020, when rates were low because of retail closures. The total was also slightly below the figure from the last time the survey was taken, in December 2020.

Gambling rates were down across all age and gender categories, though in some the declines were too small to be statistically significant.

When excluding the National Lottery, the total portion of people gambling during the four-week period was 28.3%, down from 30.5% in June 2020.

The decline was mostly due to a drop in retail gambling, as the portion gambling online increased year-on-year from 16.8% to 17.6%. Retail gambling plummeted from 31.8% to 24.1%, having been at 34.9% in 2019.

The regulator noted that a large portion of the increase in online gambling and the sharp drop in retail was due to a larger portion of lottery players moving online. The National Lottery was the only vertical to see a statistically significant growth in online play from 11.4% to 13.8% while the portion of the population who bought tickets in person fell from 19.9% to 14.7%.

The National Lottery remained by far the most popular form of gambling, with 26.3% of respondents reporting buying tickets. This was down from 2019 and 2020, but slightly ahead of 2018s levels. Levels of scratchcard play also declined, to 7.4%, while the portion of players playing charitable lotteries remained roughly stable at 12.1%.

Sports betting, at 5.5%, horse race betting, at 3.2% online slots at 3.7% and casino games at 1.1% also saw levels of play remain steady, while bingo play declined.

Looking only at in-person gambling though, declines occurred in every vertical where at least 0.5% of the population reported taking part. The amount of people taking part in in-person sports betting fell from 2.5% in 2019 to 0.8% in 2021.

The Gambling Commission also took further statistics about problem gambling rates. Much like December 2020s survey, the portion of problem gamblers recorded 0.4% was lower in this years survey than the previous edition, but the Commission said the change was too small to be statistically significant.

However, the portion of people who were assessed as being at medium risk of gambling harm did decline at a statistically significant level, from 1.4% to 0.7%, with the sharpest decline among young people.

The portion at low risk was also lower in 2021 than 2020, but again the regulator said the decline was not statistically significant.

As a result, the combined percentage assessed as being at some level of risk was down from 4.2% in 2020 to 3.1% in 2021.

Yankees ML (-129)

Ive said it before and Ill say it again. I usually dont like to bet the Yankees. They are generally over priced in the betting market as they are a very public team and usually pretty tough to find value. What I hate to do even more is bet the Yankees against the Rays. These two teams hate each other and Cash always seems to be a step ahead of Boone. But this series just feels like the Yankees series to sweep and they have their ace going today with Cole. I know Cole has seemed a bit shaky since the substance ban but if you look at the numbers hes actually pitched very well. I know the Rays have generally done well against Cole in years past but hes gotten the better of them in two out of three games this year and trust he will pitch well today. On the flip side the Rays counter with Patino who has been shelled all year. First 5 was my initial thought here (especially with the Yankees having to use a lot of the pen in this series) but it was just too juiced so didnt see the value. I do think there is enough value on the full game money line to pull the trigger with Cole against Pitino. Give me the Yankees to get the sweep.

White Sox/Padres ML parlay +111

I try to stay away from parlays as much as possible as they just arent smart long term, but there are times when it makes sense (IMO) to do a two teamer. If I really like two teams but the money lines are too juiced and dont fully trust the run lines, I will parlay both teams together. Thats what played out today with the White Sox and Padres. Lets start with the White Sox. They have been an extremely frustrating team for me to bet on this year as that lineup just hasnt been producing like last year. They did just get Eloy back so that should definitely help. The Royals have taken 2 out of the 3 games in this series but I dont think they make it 3 of 4. I think Rondon will quiet the Royals bats and get the W in this spot. Next is the Padres. I took them yesterday and Snell got blown the fuck up. But even when the score was 10-0 it just feels like the Padres arent out of it. Their lineup is so filthy, especially with the Frazier addition. The money line was outrageous due to Musgrove going and how bad the Rockies are on the road but I do see value in parlaying it with Rondon and the White Sox for some plus money.

Whatever you play I hope we all cash today!

UFC Vegas 33 Predictions – The Sports Gambling Podcast

Posted: at 8:50 pm

Another winning week in this space at UFC Vegas 32 means Im on a bit of a heater. But do you know whats not hot? This weeks UFC offering. Its a weak, weak, weak card. But, as Ive said time and time again the quality of the card does not have any effect on the quality of our gambling earnings. So, lets get this party started with my UFC Vegas 33 predictions.

RELATEDThe 10 Commandments of MMA Betting8 UFC Stats That Will Win You Money

All odds courtesy of PointsBet

My MMA Gambling Podcast cohost and I disagree on the main event, but Im riding with the chalk in Sean Strickland over Uriah Hall. While Hall is a scary knockout artist, Strickland has only been KOd once in his 26-fight career. Plus hes the superior grappler in this matchup, which I think he can ride to victory if he chooses.

Another one we disagree on, but I promise Im not just picking Kyung Ho Kang because he is nicknamed Mr. Perfect like Curt Hennig was. Rani Yahya is a grappling wizard, but Kang is a strong grappler himself and has only lost one fight via submission. Kangs size and superior striking will carry the day here (I hope).

Ok, lets get some plus money now, shall we? Weve got two womens strawweights matched up here, both looking for their first UFC win. Im betting (literally) that Gloria de Paula will be the one with her hand raised, as her power striking (three knockouts out of five wins) could cause Cheyanne Buys issues.

Jared Gooden is taking this match on less than a weeks notice, which normally is bad news (short notice fighters only win 40% of the time over the past year and a half). Plus he doesnt seem to be on Niklas Stolzes level, so Stolze is the pick, at a decent price.

Two flyweights who struggle to make it down to the 125-pound weight limit match up here in Ryan Benoit and Zarrukh Adashev. These are also two flyweights in desperate need of a win. Adashev is a former pro kickboxer who surprisingly has lost to strikers in both his UFC career fights, but Benoit also has the grappling chops to ride that route to victory.

Bryan Bam Bam Barberena had a recent scary health issue where ruptured arteries were pouring blood into his stomach, but hes back and ready to go. All seven of Jason Witts career losses have come via finish (five knockouts and two submissions), so I think Bam Bam is going to knock him out here.

Bet you didnt know a former UFC champion is on this weak card? That would be the UFCs first Womens Flyweight Champion, Nicco Montano, who has had a snakebitten career since being crowned, with injuries and weight cutting issues causing her to only fight twice in the octagon since she debuted four years ago. Assuming she is still at a similar level she was last time in the cage (two years ago), she should take care of Yanan.

We have two debuting UFC fighters in this featherweight prelim fight. While Melsik Baghdasaryan is only 5-1 in MMA, he has extensive pro kickboxing (and some pro boxing) experience. Theres a good chance he lights up Collin Anglin on the feet in this one.

Rafa Garcia has won seven of his 11 pro fights via submission, while Chris Gruetzemacher has lost three times (out of four) via submission. So, it looks like we have a nice chance for a Garcia via submission prop bet here.

This pick em fight could be a slugfest, between The Colombian Warrior and The Fighting Hawaiian. Im backing the Colombian, Danny Chavez to win this war.

Time for some more plus money, in former Invicta FC Atomweight Champion Jinh Yu Frey, fresh off her first UFC win in three tries. She should be able to dictate where this fight takes place against Ashley Yoder as shes the better grappler.

Trevin Jones is taking this fight on short notice, so weve got to fade him here. Additionally, Ronnie Lawrence is no slouch, with a 7-1 pro record with four knockouts.

In the curtain jerker, Orion Cosce is my pick. While hell be at a significant size disadvantage here, heres the better all-around fighter and should be able to overcome it.

Overall Record: 468-382

2021Record: 159-124Earnings:-($2938.34)Return on Investment: -(10.4)%

Entain extends reach of safe play initiatives into video gaming | Responsible gambling – iGaming Business

Posted: at 8:50 pm

Industry giant Entain is to extend the scope of its work with external partners to provide more education and support across additional areas of entertainment such as video games, in order to further strengthen its customer protection measures.

Delivered through its not-for-profit organisation Entain Foundation, Entain will work with its US partners to help players at potential risk of harm both in the UK and Europe.

Early initiatives within the scheme will include the launch of Mind Your Game in the UK in partnership with Game Quitters, a support community for victims of gaming disorder, and Kindbridge, a teletherapy company focused on the treatment of gamblers and gamers suffering mental health issues.

Mind Your Game will provide players and their families with facts about the mental health challenges faced by gamers and advice on how to access support. The Entain Foundation also already sponsors a social media educational initiative to raise awareness of potential addiction among players in the UK.

Mind Your Game was developed with support from Kindbridge, a teletherapy company focused on the treatment of gamblers and gamers suffering mental health issues.

Meanwhile, the Entain Foundation will provide education and support for people at risk of online addiction and gaming disorder in the video gaming and interactive entertainment markets.

This will be delivered in partnership with EPIC Risk Management a consultancy specialising in the prevention of gambling harm and the Counter-Strike Professional Players Association, which represents professional esports players. Entain also works with EPIC on a number ofother responsible gambling initiatives.

Our business is all about understanding and meeting the needs of customers, which means offering the most entertaining experiences whilst doing everything we can to protect them, Entains director of safer gambling and regulation Grainne Hurst said.

At the core of our approach to sustainability is our belief that delivering the highest possible levels of player safety and protection is the best way to guarantee our long-term success.

The interactive entertainment launch comes after Entain last year launched a Sustainability Charter that included responsible gaming and investing in people and communities among its four cornerstones. Entain pledged to invest 100m (118m/$139m) in the Foundation by 2025 to support educational and support projects.

Entain develops its responsible gambling initiatives with support from a number of leading experts, includingDr Mark Griffiths, a professor of behavioural addiction and psychology, as well as academics fromHarvard Medical Faculty School of Addiction.

This includes working on EntainsAdvanced Responsibility and Care (ARC) project, which launched in November last year when the business rebranded from GVC.

A Complete Guide to Online Gambling in the Netherlands – Programming Insider

When you think about online gambling in the Netherlands, you expect to find one of the most liberal markets in the world. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Even for traditional brick-and-mortar casinos, only a state-sponsored casino, Holland Casino has a monopoly with various casinos across the country. Fortunately, things are currently looking up, and Dutch players have many reasons to be excited.

Currently, yes, but it has not always been so. The government had banned any form of remote gambling within its borders, leaving only international options for Dutch players. It would later extend this ban to offshore companies until 2014 when the countrys legislative body passed a law to allow foreign companies to enter the market.

Further legislation was passed in 2019 that came into effect in March 2021 that further opens up the online gambling space. It also gives the governments regulatory authority more power to oversee the market by granting licenses and ensuring the players interests are protected. With this in mind, here is all the information you need to know about online gambling in the Netherlands.

You can just about every other game in casinos that allow Dutch players thanks to their use of the premier casino games software. These casinos use software like NetEnt, Playtech, and Microgaming. As a result, you get to enjoy a wide range of game options and plenty of variations. They also update their libraries often, so you have just as much fun as players in other countries.

The quality of the graphics, the user-friendly design, and other effects create an immersive and memorable experience. Some of the top games available are:

You can enjoy plenty of slot games, often with 20 paylines and both 3-reel and 5-reel variations. On top of that, you also have progressive jackpots that give you a chance to win life-changing sums of money. Be on the lookout for free spins opportunities as they allow you to enjoy more games and increase your chances of winning. Top slots games you may find in casinos include:

Tables games add excitement to any online casino as most give you a chance to try out some gambling strategies to boost your luck. Players in the Netherlands can enjoy table games like Roulette in all its top variations like American, French, and European. There are also various variations of blackjack, craps, and bingo. For video poker fans, you can practice your wit on popular titles like Aces or Faces, Jacks or Better and Deuces Wild.

Live dealer games add glitz to the online casino atmosphere. You will have to check the best online casino in Netherland 2021 that has a provision for live games where you get to play with live dealers and in real-time. You can also play against other players in rooms.

Your casino experience is heavily influenced by the payment options available to you. You want safe, fast, and acceptable methods in your region. For Dutch players, the following are the best payment options that are also available in casinos that accept them.

A good sign that the casino is best for Dutch players is if it provides iDEAL as one of its payment options. iDEAL is a tailormade option for Dutch consumers allowing them to access online banking services and immediately make payments anywhere. Dutch players can leverage this on their casino accounts. You do not need to register with iDEAL itself but rather have an account at any of the supported banks. It allows fasts and seamless banking.

Debit and Credit cards are one of the universal ways to make deposits and withdrawals from your casinos account. The two main ones are VISA and Mastercard, which are available to Dutch players as other international ones. The advantage of these two cards is their universality and also the fast convenience of topping up your account.

If you want to take extra safety measures, then you can use the Paysafecard. They are prepaid cards with a 16-digit PIN that can be accessed in most stores in the country. This card allows you to make your payments to the account anonymously without sharing your bank or credit card information. It is, however, not a guarantee that all the casinos accepting players from the Netherlands will have this option.

e-wallets offer plenty of convenience and security as a payment option. The three biggest ones are Neteller, Skrill, and PayPal. They are spread globally, meaning more casinos have adopted them as both withdrawal and deposit banking options. You will need to create an account with either of them and, for further security, set up a two-step factor authentication.

Some of the top casinos available to Dutch players are;

Luxury Casino holds licensing from two reputable jurisdictions, which are the Malta Gaming Authority and the UK Gambling Commission. It is powered by Microgaming and thus has a rich library of games. It also has multiple payment options and accepts EURO, USD, CAD, and GBP currencies.

There are many attractions to this casino, including extra bonuses, multiple software providers including NetEnt and Microgaming, and an immersive gambling environment. It has licenses from the UK Gambling Commission and the Jersey Gambling Commission. It also has multiple payment options, including iDEAL, and accepts the following currencies; USD, GBP, NOK, SEK, EUR, CAD.

Grand Mondial Casino is powered by Microgaming, and it is an international brand with a huge reputation. Its attractions include an extensive gaming library, fair gambling commissions, and wide payment options. It is licensed by the Kahnawake Gaming Commission and has industry-standard security measures.

The Zodiac Casino is another top casino running on Microgaming software. It has licenses from the UK Gambling Commission and the Maltese Gaming Authority. The accepted payment options include Neteller, Skrill, Visa, Mastercard, and iDEAL. The casino has excellent bonuses and an extensive game library, all of which create an exciting experience.

The Dutch gambling industry is opening to more players, and Dutch players can now enjoy the adventures they had been missing. It helps that their regulatory body is setting up proper industry standards and will play a strict oversight role to protect the players. Therefore even with the excitement, it helps to exercise due diligence to find the best and legal online casinos.

Retired NASA Engineers Return to Fix Hubble Telescope – Smithsonian Magazine

Posted: at 8:49 pm

When a 31-year-old space computer doesnt work as well as it used to, its time to call in the folks who built the system decades ago.

Thats exactly what scientists repairing NASAs Hubble Space Telescope did when it failed in June. Retired staff and others who helped build the orbiting telescope returned to assist the current team, some of whom were not even born in 1990 when the telescope was first launched into space.

Thats one of the benefits of a program thats been running for over 30 years: the incredible amount of experience and expertise, says Nzinga Tull, Hubble systems anomaly response manager, in a NASA press release. Its been humbling and inspiring to engage with both the current team and those who have moved on to other projects. Theres so much dedication to their fellow Hubble teammates, the observatory and the science Hubble is famous for.

Their efforts paid off handsomely. Hubble went back online July 17 and has been relaying spectacular images back to Earth ever since. Two black-and-white photos in particular provide incredible detail of two distant galaxiesa rare view of ARP-MADORE2115-273, a system with interacting stars located 297 million light-years from Earth, and ARP-MADORE0002-503, an unusual three-tailed spiral cluster about 490 million light-years away, reports George Dvorsky for Gizmodo.

The photos were produced by a team led by astronomer Julianne Dalcanton of the University of Washington in Seattle. They are using the restored Hubble, which orbits Earth at 340 miles in altitude, to collect images of unusual galaxies.

Ill confess to having had a few nervous moments during Hubbles shutdown, but I also had faith in NASAs amazing engineers and technicians, she says in a news release posted on NASAs Hubble website.

Of course, the new images would not have been possible if older scientists had not been available to help service the telescope. The Hubble main computer shut down June 13, placing all instruments in safe mode. When that happened, NASA scrambled to contact team members who had worked on the telescope three and four decades earlier, reports Tariq Malik of Space.com.

While some of the retired staff connected remotely because of Covid-19 restrictions, others still working at NASAs Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland pored over old manuscripts and documents looking for clues to fix the problem.

After weeks of head scratching and problem solving, old and young engineers determined a glitch in the computers power control unit was the likely culprit. NASA did a work-around by switching to backup units and rebooting the system, writes Brandon Specktor for Space.com.

Im thrilled to see that Hubble has its eye back on the universe, once again capturing the kind of images that have intrigued and inspired us for decades, says NASA administrator Bill Nelson in the press release. This is a moment to celebrate the success of a team truly dedicated to the mission. Through their efforts, Hubble will continue its 32nd year of discovery, and we will continue to learn from the observatorys transformational vision.

Now that the repaired Hubble Space Telescope is running as normal, its expected to work in tandem with the new James Webb Space Telescope when its slated to launch later this yearunless the new telescope faces further delays, Specktor reports.

YSU professor has 2 projects with the Hubble Telescope – WKBN.com

Posted: at 8:49 pm

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) The Hubble Telescope is back online.

It was sidelined by a computer glitch for over a month and its camera eye was closed. And that put YSU professor Dr. Patrick Durrell in a bit of a panic.

When it had computer problems last month, I was sitting here, Im still hoping to get data, Durrell said.

Every year, Durrell routinely writes proposals to collaborate with colleagues and friends to apply for time with the telescope.

Durrell got notice last week that two projects he was on received time with Hubble from the thousands of ideas submitted.

He was just waiting for the telescope to be fixed, and it resumed operations last Saturday.

Its wonderful from a science point of view but also a personal point of view, Im like yes! he said.

Both projects will look at dwarf galaxies.

Durrell wants to understand them a little more. He says theyre close enough you can see some of the stars and star clusters in them, and you can see them in more detail with Hubble.

He believes its important to understand how galaxies formed in all sizes.

If we take a patch of sky, theres a few big, big galaxies, a few more Milky Way-sized galaxies and then lots of these little dwarf galaxies. So how do they fit in? Durrell asks.

Hubble has been orbiting Earth since 1990. Its the length of a bus and travels five miles every second.

Its been used to check out a galaxy 13 billion light years away.

Durrell will get 15 orbits to have Hubbles cameras point at the dwarf galaxies to take pictures.

We need to study, is this a new galaxy making stars now or has it always been there and its just been hanging around for 10 billion years? We dont know until we get the Hubble data, Durrell said.

The professor expects to get the data some time in the next year to 18 months.
