After a night of celebrations and tension following the announcement of the constitutional coup of the President of the Republic Kais Saied. The Ennahdha militants led by their leader Rached Ghannouchi are still in front of the gates of the Assembly and clashed with pro Tunisian President Kais Saied activists under the control of the police outside and the army inside the parliament. At the end of the morning the slogan of the party will be to leave the sit-in, the parliament still held by the military regains its calm. Tunis, Tunisia, on July 26, 2021. On July 25, Tunisians experienced a peculiar day. In the morning, they were on social media, celebrating swimmer Ahmed Hafnaoui, who unexpectedly won gold in the 400-meter freestyle final at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Later that day, protests rocked the capital Tunis and several other cities across the countryMonastir, Sfax, El Kef, Sousse, and Touzeuras protestors called on the government to step down due to the poor handling of the latest COVID-19 breakout and economic collapse of the country. In the evening, Tunisian President Kais Saied invoked Article 80 of the 2014 constitution to prevent imminent dangerthreatening the integrity of the country. He then announced the freezing of the activities of parliament for thirty days, the suspension of parliamentary immunity for all members of parliament, and the dismissal of Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi. President Saied will assume all executive powers and subsequently choose a prime minister of his choice.
According to Article 80, in the event of imminent danger threatening the nations institutions or the security or independence of the country, and hampering the normal functioning of the state, the president may take any measures necessitated by the exceptional circumstances, after consultation with the prime minister and speaker of parliament and informing the president of the constitutional court. Unfortunately, Tunisia does not yet have a functioning constitutional court, so legal experts opinions on the legality of Saieds decision vary. Political parties were also divided. The Islamist party Ennahda and its leader, Rached Ghannouchi, who is also the speaker of parliament, called the decision a coup against the 2011 Jasmine Revolution, while other parties supported Saieds decision.
How did things get here?
This crisis is long in the making. After almost perfectly handling the first wave of COVID-19 in mid-2020, the country fell into a deep political, economic, and later health crisis. On July 15, 2020, former Prime Minister Elyes Fakhfakh resigned after days of mounting political tension between him and some coalition parties, primarily Ennahda.
Ten days later, on July 25, 2020, Saied nominated Mechichi as the head of the new government. Mechici, the interior minister in 2020 under Fakhfakh, had a technocratic profile as the former chief investigator in the national anti-corruption authority. He is from Jendouba, a town of the disadvantaged area of northwest Tunisia.
His government won the vote of confidence in September 2020 by 134 votes to sixty-seven. The heterogeneity of the groups supporting his executivethe Islamist Ennahda and Karama and the modernist Qalb Tounes and Tahya Tounesshowed that the modernist-Islamist cleavage is not particularly helpful in making sense of the current phase of Tunisian politics.
The current phase can be defined as an institutional conflict, pitting the presidency against the parliament, Saied against Ghannouchia conflict that has been brewing for a while now. Initially, Mechichi was perceived to be close to Saied, but soon after the formers appointment, the situation changed. As relations between him and the president soured, Mechichi got closer and closer to the parties supporting his executive. However, his executive struggled to address the problems adequately. Tunisia is facing a particularly deep socio-economic crisis which has been ongoing for several years.
Against this backdrop, the COVID-19 pandemic was also becoming unmanageable in Tunisia over the past few weeks. The country witnessed a rapid rise in infections due to the spread of the Delta variant. On July 13, Tunisia recorded 157 coronavirus deaths and almost 8500 new cases, the highest daily infection rate and death toll since the start of the pandemic. Hospitals were overwhelmed and the country faced shortages of oxygen supplies, vaccines, and medicines. After chaos erupted at the vaccination centers on the first day of the Muslim Eid al-Adha holiday on July 21, Mechichi sacked Health Minister Faouzi Mehdi. However, as the crisis deepened, many in Tunisia criticized the attitude of Mechichi not only for the lack of efficiency in dealing with the crisis, but also for some of his actions. A week earlier, on July 14, Mechichi had played tennis in front of cameras with Ons Jabeur, the rising star of Tunisian tennis, at the peak of the crisis. It was also later revealed that Mechichi and other members of the cabinet held a retreat in a luxury hotel and pool in Hammamet during the crisis, further exacerbating social tensions.
International reactions to Tunisia
The international community reacted slowly to the events of July 25, with most political leaders publishing weak, largely insignificant statements. In the immediate aftermath of President Saieds decision to freeze parliament and sack the prime minister, neither the United States nor the European Union (EU) responded. Only by the end of the day, when the situation deteriorated and the protests seemed to become more violent, did the US issue an official statement siding with Tunisias democracy. The State Department published the statement after Secretary Antony Blinken called President Saied urging him to adhere to the principles of democracy and human rights. Meanwhile, the EU waited two full days before issuing an official declaration. Joseph Borrell, the EUs foreign policy chief, called for the restoration of institutional stability as soon as possible and, in particular, for the resumption of parliamentary activity.
Individual EU member states also showed discontent at the events in Tunisia, but none took a decisive stance against President Saieds actions. Germany said it was following the latest developments with concern while France called for a return to the normal functioning of the states institutions.
Turkeys foreign ministry expressed deep concern and called for the restoration of democratic legitimacy. As expected, Turkey is siding with its ally Ennahda. Turkeys position can be instrumentally used by some countries, such as the Emirates and Egypt, to emphasize the Islamist secularist divide as the main cleavage in Tunisia and potentially depict the Tunisian crisis as a repetition of the Egyptian coup of General al-Sisi of 2013, when democratically-elected Islamist President Mohamed Morsi was deposed. Saieds actions can be presented as the actions of a secular modernist leader that is intent on preserving the country from the backwardness of the Islamic movement.
Qatar took a more neutral position, despite the offices of its state-owned news channel Al Jazeera being stormed by Tunisian police and its journalists expelled. Only the foreign ministry issued an official statement, saying that Qatar hopes that Tunisian parties will adopt the path of dialogue to overcome the crisis. Qatar did not make any official announcement condemning the attack.
Both Russias and Saudi Arabias comments focus on maintaining the security and stability of the country and its people.
So far, it appears that most international actors are taking a bystander position and waiting to see how the situation in Tunisia evolves. They are particularly interested in knowing the official position of the powerful Tunisian General Labor Union (UGTT). Thus far, the UGTT seems somewhat supportive of President Saieds decisions, saying that his actions were in line with the constitution. Otherwise, the UGTT has not yet issued a strong statement. In any case, the main issue is not whether the actions of the president are legitimate or not according to the constitution, but the fact that these actions were taken at the worst possible moment for the country, one in which the fragile economy and political system may not survive the blow inflicted by this decision, thus, underscoring how President Saied does not have Tunisias best interests at heart.

Indias Landslide saga and why India needs to be concerned as these are surely not the lasts or worsts – The Indian Wire
Posted: at 8:53 pm
India, for some time, has been wearing a tiara of its vulnerabilities.
Revenge tourism is on every mind, including the ones who have been cautious all along the pandemic. Practicing restraint has been tough on human mind but a necessary evil to accomplish. Hence, an urge to spread ones wings in free air has become difficult to extinguish.
But there remains no point where a disaster could be confined to a particular part of India. If Northern Bihar is facing annual floods, Indias southern states, in particular, Maharashtra too, is facing the drift.
About 2,29,074 people were evacuated from the flood-hit areas from a total of 1,028 affected villages on the western coast and nearly 25,564 animals died in vain.
Landslides are pretty common in upper belts of Uttarakhand and a few calculated lower stretches. So, what is different this time? Uttarakhand has been reporting a succession of landslides ever since the month began.
Being a mountain baby, it becomes easy to decide where it is safer to go. But maybe, not anymore. Even the mountain stretches hard and emboldened enough to resist the downward movement, are facing the landslides.
Himachal Pradesh also reported a bridge collapse due to boulder-fall killing 9 and leaving many injured.
Like all the unexpected events taking hold of the human world, increasing intensity and frequency of natural disasters has grabbed its own place to make lives miserable and pathetic.
Not only lives are lost because of these disasters, additionally, misinformation and confusion prevails that leads to further chaos.
From being ranked 44 out of 191 countries in the World Bank Groups2019 Inform Risk Index (and 29 out of 191 in terms of high disaster risks) to constantly facing from all clouts and blows of Nature, India is attempting to recover.
According to the rankings, India has very high exposure to greater risks and this has even driven its social vulnerability ramping people under extreme poverty, accelerating unemployment and consequent trafficking. India has 420,000 sqkm, or 12.6% of its total land as landslide-prone.
With the climate change in picture, this is bound to worsen.
India has repeatedly faced some of the highest maximum temperatures around the world, with an average monthly maximum of around 30C.
Floods constitute one of the greatest sources of annual losses to Indian exchequer caused by disasters, a staggering $7 billion every year.
And nearly 86% of worldwide deaths caused from tropical cyclones are accounted for, in India and Bangladesh alone.
Experts have warned that we can no longer ignore the climate change dynamics, as it significantly engulfs our daily routine. The monsoon rains are bound to increase unprecedented with an increase in the global temperatures.
As per one of the latest studies Climate change is making the Indian monsoon seasons more chaotic: For every degree Celsius of warming, monsoon rains will likely increase by about 5 per cent. Global warming is increasing the monsoon rainfall in India even more than previously thought.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Changes (IPCC) fifth Assessment Report (AR5)has clarified the impact of humans on climate system and vice-versa.
It is dominating the monsoon dynamics of the 21st century. Climate change is leading to unpredictable weather extremes and their serious consequences. What is really on the line is the socio-economic well-being of the Indian subcontinent.
A more chaotic monsoon season poses a threat to the agriculture and economy in the region and should be a wake-up call for policymakers to drastically cut greenhouse gas emissions worldwide.
Western Ghats, according to Madhav Gadgil committee, have been termed as ecologically sensitive and any development in the zone attracts deep scrutiny yet the deforestation and rapid urbanization in these serene Ghats have led to the warming of atmosphere.
This has fueled the capacity of air to absorb and retain moisture, prospering the existence and formation of intense cumulus-nimbus clouds, the giant vertical clouds bearing rain, to trigger an incessant downpour over this region.
The same story is ruling the mountains where unbated construction of hydropower plants for increasing electricity demand of increasing population and roads, hotels or homes causes deforestation and alteration in land-use planning.
Removal of forest cover can lead to the loosening of soil and easy landslides even with the smallest amount of rainfall.
Hills or upper regions are more sensitive and susceptible to changes in weather system and even respond to these threats more quickly.
With the development of cumulonimbus clouds, paired with the absence of strong upper air currents can cause cloud bursts. As the clouds get trapped and could not travel afar, it tends to expend all its water over a certain area, taking the face of cloud bursts.
It is no longer a developing countrys problem alone, but it is now hitting the industrialized nations such as Germany, Belgium, and The Netherlands, explains a researcher from IPCC.
There is a grim picture in every country possible, be it the third wave in US, floods in China, heat waves in most of the countries or floods in Italy and nearby countries. The differentiation has ended ultimately.

Threat to small businesses after Cleveland Bridge collapse – The Northern Echo
Posted: at 8:53 pm
Calls are growing for Government action in the wake of the Cleveland Bridge crisis as supply chain firms face a bleak future.
The Federation of Small Businesses in the region warned that many SMEs in the supply chain would need help and Seema Malhotra MP, Labour's Shadow Minister for Business and Consumers, said urgent action need to be taken.
The FSB called for the right support in the right places.
Reshma Begum,Development Manager for the region said: "Small businesses dont have the luxury of significant cash reserves to offset the detrimental impact of losing a large contract, so it is essential that support is provided to both the employees and the businesses impacted by the crisis.
"The Cleveland Bridge crisis will undoubtedly cause serious concerns amongst the businesses across the country, operating within their supply chain.
"Small businesses are often required to dedicate significant proportions of their resource and capacity to service large scale contracts, and the threat of losing the same could be devastating for already hard-hit businesses navigating their way out of the Covid pandemic."
Seema Malhotra said: "This is extremely worrying news and my immediate thoughts are with every affected employee who may be feeling anxious about their livelihood."
"The Government must explain as a matter of urgency what it is doing to protect these jobs. And Ministers must also dig deeper and explain how it can be possible that an engineering company of this significance, a major employer in the North responsible for building landmarks across our country, can be in such a perilous position.
"This news underlines again that we need a long-term plan for oursteel industry which is vital for our economy and national security. The UK has a proud manufacturing history and it's crucial government backs Britain's manufacturers to secure their proud future."
Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng
The Business SecretaryKwasi Kwarteng is understood to have asked his team at theDepartment for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy to find out what happened in abid to understand how it could all have ended so badly so quickly.
The Northern Echo understands that Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen has been asked to helpthe investigation.
A BEIS spokesperson said: "We recognise that this will be distressing news for Cleveland Bridge employees and their families. Government officials are engaging with local partners in Tees Valley to understand the situation in more detail.
We are working hard to make sure that the sector has the best possible chance of competing for and winning public contracts. All Government departments and arms-length bodies are required to consider socio-economic factors when procuring steel.
The department has already established a new joint industry and BEIS Steel Procurement Taskforce with the aim of working with the sector to promote the unique selling points of UK steel and explore how best to support and position the industry for success in forthcoming major public contracts.
The is also the 315m Industrial Energy Transformation Fund which aims to support businesses with high energy use to cut their bills and reduce carbon emissions. The department says it has also provided up to 66m through the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund to help steel and other foundation industries develop radical new technologies and establish innovation centres of excellence in these sectors.
And Kwasi Kwarteng has reformed and co-chaired the UK Steel Council for 2021. There have been three meetings so far, the latest only on Wednesday,to work in partnership on the shared objective of creating an achievable, long-term plan to support the sectors transition to a competitive, sustainable and low carbon future. The news broke just a few days ago thatCleveland Bridge - one of the great engineering icons of the North - had called in administrators, putting hundreds of jobs at risk.

That team of administrators then confirmed that it was the Covid pandemic that had pushed the company over the edge, and they warned: "No business is immune to the far-reaching impact of the pandemic, which has delayed major infrastructure projects around the world and put significant financial pressure on the teams behind them."

Cleveland Bridge on Yarm Road
Butit also thought that the Government may have to answer for more deep-rooted problems in the sector as firms face major problems in the global marketplace.
There is anger at the lack of a level playing field and concern in many quarters that Government support is not welded together.
Read more:Cleveland Bridge: The six questions we still need answering on Darlington firm's future
Alex Cunningham, MP for Stockton North, has already clearly blamed the Government, saying: Too often weve seen the Tories fail our industries and workers in the Tees Valley. When we needed help to save the Redcar SSI blast furnace they turned their backs and when the Sirius mine project needed a helping hand the Government and the Tees Mayor were content to see it taken over by a multi-national company leaving local investors, some of whom sunk their life savings into it, high and dry.
Too many jobs have been lost in the Tees Valley in recent years some 12000 since the start of the pandemic and we have one of the highest unemployment rates in the country. This time the Government, without the restrictions on aid they could have faced because of the EU, must ensure these jobs and this internationally renowned company are saved.

The Supreme Courts ruling last week on cooperatives restricts the operation of the 97th Amendment to the Constitution, passed by Parliament in 2011, to multi-State cooperative societies. This Amendment had sought to spell out a set of governance norms to be enforced by the Centre on cooperatives, the running of which is a State subject. The apex court has observed that for the amendment to hold, at least half the State assemblies should have passed it. Therefore, the newly formed Cooperation Ministry at the Centre can oversee the running of multi-State cooperatives (which form a fraction of the over 8.5 lakh such bodies in India). The Reserve Bank of India oversees the functioning of urban cooperative banks, following an amendment to the Banking Regulation Act last September. However, cooperatives that do not call themselves banks, do not issue cheques, and are restricted in their operations to a single State, will continue to be governed by the Registrar of Cooperative Societies (RoCS). Cooperative societies are set up either as quasi-banks (receiving term deposits and disbursing credit) or producing or marketing entities, such as in sugar, dairy and fertiliser sectors. A collapse of a credit cooperative can cause a serious contagion effect. The trouble here is that the district and State cooperative banks are under RBI and NABARD oversight, while primary agriculture credit societies (PACS) that accept lay deposits are under the RoCS. The unfolding of a cooperative bank scam in Kerala, where the primary agriculture credit societies (PACS) actually call themselves banks, underscores the need for cohesive regulation which the States should appreciate. The RoCS has failed to ensure professional governance. For PACS an independent body that comprises the RoCC and other professionals should be set up in the States.
Producer cooperatives have achieved impressive socio-economic gains in Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. However, their structure and access to resources financial, physical and human opens them to political misuse and patronage. Revenues from cooperatives finance elections, while jockeying for political control of cooperatives is commonplace in these States. As for credit cooperatives, it is true that some PACS have produced remarkable outcomes but are deprived of necessary funding from district cooperative banks for political reasons. The challenge is to improve transparency in the running of all cooperatives.
There can be no denying that the States, while fiercely defending their turf here, need to set cooperatives right and not merely blame the Centre for interference. Successes in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala should be replicated in the rest of the country. An independent oversight system for cooperatives could show the way forward. The Centre should operate with a light touch, recognising that decentralised governance works best.

Google Responded to Workplace Complaints With Counseling – The New York Times
Posted: at 8:52 pm
Another Google employee, who asked to remain anonymous because she still works at the company, recalled that when she complained about a racist and toxic manager, she was told that perhaps she needed resilience training. She was also offered the same options: counseling or paid medical leave. She chose the latter. A former Google employee based in London said she was also offered counseling when she came forward with sexual assault claims.
When Timnit Gebru, a former co-leader of Googles Ethical A.I. team, raised concerns about bias in the technology giants artificial intelligence, she was also offered resources on mindfulness, she said in an email. She declined the offer, telling human resources that no amount of mindfulness fixes a hostile work environment.
One of my first questions when I have new clients is, Have you seen a therapist in the prior years? Ms. Mizrahi said. If someone had seen a therapist a long time ago for reasons unrelated to the current case and was otherwise mentally healthy until their work environment became challenging, lawyers can argue that those previous records are irrelevant and should not be handed over to the companys lawyers in litigation.
But when there are records of contemporaneous treatment, it becomes much harder to argue that they are irrelevant to the case at hand. (Of course, in some cases, that evidence might actually end up bolstering an employees case.)
When a counselor or therapist receives a subpoena, they can move to have that quashed or they may seek to turn over the minimal amount of information possible, said Dr. Lee, of Seattle University. However, when it comes to subpoenaing an E.A.P. counselor, I could see how there could be a potential conflict of interest, she added.
Where counselors are located might also suggest a breach of independence, said Ms. Hull, an employment attorney. I get really suspicious of E.A.P. counselors who are in the same building as human resources, sometimes in the same suite as human resources, she added.
She recounted that one of her clients, not affiliated with Google, told an employer-provided counselor that she was considering hiring an attorney with complaints about her work environment. The next day, according to Ms. Hull, human resources pulled the employee aside to ask her why she was looking to hire a lawyer a fact that she hadnt disclosed to anyone except her counselor.
In many cases, when plaintiffs realize that their counseling and medical records might be made public in emotional distress cases, they decide to either settle or drop their claims, Ms Mizrahi said.
Daisuke Wakabayashi contributed reporting.

Why Biden, Apple, Google And Others Are Changing Strategies To Combat Covid Crisis – Forbes
Posted: at 8:52 pm
WASHINGTON, DC - JULY 29: U.S. President Joe Biden gestures as he delivers remarks in the East Room ... [+] of the White House on July 29, 2021 in Washington, DC. President Biden spoke on his administration's effort to get more Americans vaccinated and plan to combat the spread of the Delta variant. (Photo by Anna Moneymaker/Getty Images)
President Joe Biden, Apple, Google and others are wisely following a basic best practice for responding to a crisis situation that all business leaders should keep in mind: Dont hesitate to change your strategies and tactics when a crisis worsens or takes unexpected turns, which is certainly the case with the rollercoaster ride that is the Covid-19 pandemic. From vaccine hesitancy to the Delta variant, the Covid crisis today is much different than it was a year ago.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Biden today called for state and local governments to make $100 payments to every newly vaccinated American to encourage them to get their Covid shots. In remarks at the White House, he announced all federal employees will be required to be vaccinated against thecoronavirusor face new testing, masking and distancing rules, according to the Washington Post.
Yesterday, Apple said anyone who enters their U.S. stores will have to wear a mask again and Facebook announced that all of their U.S. employees must be vaccinated before they can return to the companys offices.
Another important best crisis management practice Biden and the tech companies are following is to clearly explain what they are doing, why they are doing it, and how it will help address the worsening crisis.
On Wednesday, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, told employees they are now required to get their Covid vaccinations and that previously announced plans to return to the office were postponed until mid-October.
As the New York Times recently reported, When companies began announcing tentative return-to-office plans this spring, there was a sense of optimism behind the messages. Covid cases were dwindling in the United States as the vaccine rollout picked up pace. Employers largely hoped their workers would get shots on their own, motivated by raffle tickets, paid time off and other perks, if not by the consensus of the medical community.
In recent days, that tone has suddenly shifted. The Delta variant, a more contagious version of the coronavirus, is sweeping through the country. Fewer than half of Americans arefully vaccinated, exacerbating the situation.
According to a July 20 report by New York Times, Apple pushed back itsreturn-to-office plansby at least a month in response to the recent surge in coronavirus cases, which has been fueled by the spread of theDelta variant. The company told employees on Monday that they are now expected to return to the office as early as Oct. 1 instead of early September. [Apple] said that the date could shift further depending on the spread of the virus, and that it would give employees at least a months notice before they are expected to return, according to an email Apple sent to employees, which was viewed by The New York Times.
As the situation continues to evolve, were committed to the same measured approach that we have taken all along, the email said.
Of course, Apple, Facebook and Google are not the only companies who are apparently worried about the changing course of the pandemic or the urgent need to do some3thing about it.
In a spring surveyof more than 3,300 small employers,Reimagine Main Street found that 64% of small employers said that was very important for their employees to get vaccinated. The majority (63%) of respondents wee willing to encourage and incentivize employees to get their shots, with AAPI and Black small employers most likely to act.
To help businesses navigate changing public health guidance, surging rates of new Covid-19 infection and partially vaccinated workforces, the Health Action Alliance and National Safety Council experts developed aDecision Tool For Employers.
According to the Health Action Alliance, This interactive online resource is designed to help executives, human resource managers and operational leaders navigate the health, legal and other considerations that can inform their vaccination policy and other workplace safety decisions.
Professor Sharona Hoffman is a health law expert at Case Western Reserve UniversitysSchool of Law andSchool of Medicine. I think Google has made a sound decision, as long as they provide exceptions for medical and religious reasons.
Given the spike in Covid cases, it would be very reasonable for other companies to make the same [vaccination and office return] decision. We have seen that too many people refuse to take the vaccine if they are not required to do so.Establishing vaccine mandates appears to be a necessary step to combating this deadly pandemic, she observed.
David C. Miller, a labor and employment attorney with Bryant Miller Olive, said, My advice to leaders is to balance the benefits of vaccinations which are obviousagainst the downsides, the biggest of which is employee pushback.
My clients tell me that if they mandate vaccinations, there will be some number of employees who will quit rather than submit. If your company has a high public profile or its a consumer-driven business, you also have to guess at how much negative publicity youll get and how much it may hurt the brand and sales. I think there will certainly be a number of businesses that follow Googles example. How manyand especially how many outside the tech industryis an open question, he noted.
Miller advised that, If youre a public sector employer or if your employees are represented by a union, there are whole additional suites of hurdles you have to leap before you can require vaccinations. Ultimately, there are going to be major First Amendment suits against governmental vaccination requirements, whether aimed at employees or the general public. Weve begun to see them already.
He observed that, Google delayed its return to the office date in tandem with the vaccination requirement. [This] seems to have been done to allow employees time to get vaccinated, but also to give more time to adjust their work-from-home lives back to the brick-and-mortar model. Any employer choosing to have a mandate would do well to follow suit to try to minimize employee disruptions and, thus, pushback. Education, tangible incentives, and soft pressure have all been used to ease employees toward vaccination.

Heres what that Google Drive security update message means – Ars Technica
Posted: at 8:52 pm
"A security update will be applied to Drive," Google's weird new email reads.A whole bunch of us on the Ars Technica staff got blasted with this last night. If you visit drive.google.com, you'll also see a message saying, "On September 13, 2021, a security update will be applied to some of your files." You can even see a list of the affected files, which have all gotten an unspecified "security update." So what is this all about?
Google is changing the way content sharing works on Drive. Drive files have two sharing options: a single-person allow list (where you share a Google Doc with specific Google accounts) and a "get link" option (where anyone with the link can access the file). The "get link" option works the same way as unlisted YouTube videosit's not really private but, theoretically, not quite public, either, since the link needs to be publicized somewhere. The secret sharing links are really just security through obscurity, and it turns out the links are actually guessable.
Along with Drive, Google is also changing the way unlisted YouTube links work, and the YouTube support page actually describes this change better than Drive does:
In 2017, we rolled out an update to the system that generates new YouTube Unlisted links, which included security enhancements that make the links for your Unlisted videos even harder for someone to discover if you haven't shared the link with them.
Google knew about the problem of guessable secret links for a while and changed the way link generation works back in 2017 (presumably for Drive, too?). Of course, that doesn't affect links you've shared in the past, and soon Google is going to require your old links to change, which can break them. Google's new link scheme adds a "resourcekey" to the end of any shared Drive links, making them harder to guess. So a link that used to look like "https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxI1YpjkbX0OZ0prTHYyQ1U2djQ/" will now look like "https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxI1YpjkbX0OZ0prTHYyQ1U2djQ/view?resourcekey=0-OsOHHiQFk1QEw6vIyh8v_w." The resource key makes it harder to guess.
If you head todrive.google.com/drive/update-drivesin a browser, you should be able to see a list of your impacted files, and if you mouse over them you'll see a button on the right to remove or apply the security update. "Applied" means the resourcekey will be required after September 13, 2021, and will (mostly) break the old link, while "removed" means the resourcekey isn't required and any links out there should keep working.
Google's "impacted files" interface. Feel free to add or remove that security update.
YouTube already went through this process earlier in the month, with all unlisted links before 2017 going dead, unless the owners of the videos are still active on YouTube and opted out. Drive is doing this with a bit more finesse than YouTube, though. Thanks to account-based sharing, anyone who accessed your unlisted Drive links in the past will still be granted access to them, even if you upgrade the security. No new people will be able to access the old, upgraded link, though. This way, if you have a stable community that uses an unlisted file, it should mostly be able to keep on trucking. Any new members, however, will be locked out and will need to request access. If you don't want this, at any point the owner of the file can hit the "share" button and change the settings to generate a new link or turn off the link altogether.
Not letting third parties create a list of all your unlisted files is a good thing, but don't confuse this link change with any actual security. You should never share anything over the "unlisted" or "get link" features on YouTube, Drive, or Google Photos if you actually want it to be private. Secret links are just security through obscurity, and even with Google's upgrades, they should not be considered secure or undiscoverable. This arrangement is totally fine for casual documents, but always assume that anyone in the world can read an "unlisted" file. If you're OK with that, fine. But if not, use Google's actually private account-based sharing options.

Google remembers Voice exists, adds new missed call and caller ID features – The Verge
Posted: at 8:52 pm
Google announced its adding new caller ID, missed call, and SMS message features to Google Voice on Wednesday. The otherwise minor update is notable because Google Voice has fallen to the wayside while Google focused on other messaging boondoggles.
From the missed calls or voicemail sections of the mobile Google Voice app, you can now learn why you might have missed a call (for example, Do Not Disturb was on), and receive directions on how to make sure that doesnt happen again (turning Do Not Disturb off). Google is also making it easier to redial dropped calls and switch to your mobile network if your Wi-Fi connection was the reason your call failed.
If you use Google Voice on iOS to forward calls to your personal number, now you can have the app display your Google Voice number on caller ID rather than the original linked number. SMS messages can now be deleted in bulk on the web version of Google Voice as well.
Googles various attempts to connect people outside of Gmail have long been somewhat confused weve even made a timeline of the journey so far but Voice, in particular, has felt forgotten in the wake of Google Fi offering a more traditional phone service. Voice received a redesign in 2018, and a dark mode in 2020, but as a business-oriented Workspace product, it hasnt really received as many dramatic evolutions as Googles wild stabs at text and video chats. For the committed Google Voice user not at risk of forgetting the service exists, that might be for the best.

How Gateway Pundit Used Vaccine And Election Misinformation To Earn $1.1 Million In Google Ad Revenue – Forbes
Posted: at 8:52 pm
Trump supporters gather outside the Capitol in Washington ahead of the Jan. 6 riot.
All of these things are true, at least according to the Gateway Pundit: Election officials lost or tampered with millions of Trump votes on election night last November. In Pennsylvania, an impossible number of mail-in ballots flowed into the state, leading to Joe Bidens victory there. (That storys headline blared with all the subtlety of a fire alarm: SHOCKING EXCLUSIVE: WE CAUGHT THEM!) Months later, Attorney General Bill Barr failed to follow up on legitimate claims of election fraud.
In reality, none of this is true. The Gateway Pundit, a far right news website which wouldnt comment for this story, pushes a daily deluge of false, misleading or fake stories to a conservative audience eager to believe themwith much of the misinformation focused on the election, Covid-19 and the vaccine rollout, according to a new analysis by the Center for Countering Digital Hate. Its been lucrative for Gateway Pundit: From November 2020 to June, the site brought in $1.1 million through Google Ad Sense, the search engines shared advertising revenue program, according to the centers study, even though Googles rules would seem to prohibit content like Gateway Pundits from being monetized.
A Google spokesperson says the company has already demonetized Gateway Pundits homepage and some of its stories, including a half dozen or so examples of Gateway Pundit pieces that the Center for Countering Digital Hate cited and were shared with Google. The spokesperson continued: We have strict publisher policies that prohibit content promoting anti-vaccine theories, COVID-19 misinformation, and false claims about the 2020 U.S. Presidential election and our enforcement can be as targeted as demonetizing a specific page. We already actioned the majority of pages shared from this report back in 2020 or early 2021 and similarly stopped serving ads on the sites homepage last year. We will continue to take appropriate action if new content is uploaded that violates our policies.
The internet is rife with misinformation, and much of the recent focus about it has centered on how it spreads on social media like Facebook, especially in the wake of President Bidens stark comments two weeks ago that Facebook is killing people by not better guarding against such content. But the Center for Countering Digital Hates researching into Gateway Pundit is a useful reminder that misinformation is not only a Facebook problem. Every major company on the web must contend with it in some way, and Google is certainly no exception.
There's an entire business model built off the back of Google ads with misinformation attached to clickbait headlines, says the centers CEO, Imran Ahmed. The Gateway Pundit is a habitual offender.
According to Ahmeds researchers, the Gateway Pundit published at least 127 articles containing false information about the election and another 155 about Dominion Voting Systems, the Denver, Colorado company shoved into the spotlight by conservative conspiracy theories that its technology used to count ballots helped sway the election in Bidens favor. (A Diminion executive, Eric Coomer, has since filed a libel lawsuit against Rudy Guiliani, the Trump Campaign, Gateway Pundit and other conservative media outlets that pushed conspiracy theories about the company.)
In the months after Bidens victory, Gateway Pundit saw enormous traffic, over 50 million visitors from November through January, far more then the 2.75 million the site reportedly saw back in 2018. The more people visit its site, the more Gateway Pundit earns through Google Ad Sense, almost $200,000 a month last fall and winter.
Traffic began to dip in the spring with nearly 50% fewer visitors to the site in March and April, according to the Center for Countering Digital Hates research. But those numbers spiked again in May and Junejust as the site switched gears, partly refocusing on Covid-19 and vaccine stories. On April 19, Gateway Pundit founder Jim Hoft penned a story with this headline: Study Results: Facemasks are Ineffective to Block Transmission of COVID-19 and Actually Can Cause Health Deterioration and Premature Death. Last week, Hoft followed up with another story, falsely accusing the federal governments VAERS website, a warehouse of vaccine data, of misreporting vaccine deaths. Traffic has picked back up: Gateway Pundit attracted 32 million visitors last month. Another Hoft piece falsely accused the CDC of mishandling Covid death data.
Gateway Pundit (its motto: We report the truth and leave the Russia-Collusion fairy tale to the Conspiracy Media) was founded in 2004 by Hoft. It rose to prominence during the 2016 election when it pushed false accusations about voter fraud and Hillary Clintons health, according to The New York Times. The Gateway Pundits support for Trump earned it White House press credentials, and in 2018, the site published a document purporting to show evidence of a sexual assault allegation against Special Counseul Robert Mueller, who was then leading the probe into Russias role during the 2016 electionbut the site was forced to take it down within hours. Earlier this year, Twitter banned Hoft, who had 375,000 followers on the platform, after sharing a story containing unsubstantiated allegations of election misconduct in Detroit.

Apparently David Chipman Isnt Crazy About the First Amendment, Either – National Review
Posted: at 8:52 pm
David Chipman testifies during a House Judiciary Committee hearing in Washington, September 25, 2019. (Leah Millis/Reuters)
So it turns out that Joe Bidens anti-gun nominee for the ATF, David Chipman, also has problems with the First Amendment, telling BBC in 2019 (hat-tip to The Federalist) that there is frustration in the United States over freedom of speech and the ability of people to say things is that largely cannot be regulated.
No, not, largely. Words cant be regulated, period.
Chipman, like most would-be censors, frames speech restrictions as a public-safety issue. The FBI, other federal agencies, have a tough job responding to these threats when they dont currently have the authority to remove weaponry just because people are saying hateful things, he explained.
First off, thousands of Americans have had their guns taken from them via red-flag and other laws usually after police and courts determine that the owners are putting themselves or others in danger. Just today, Floridas agriculture commissioner Nikki Fried strippedthe concealed-carry licenses of 22 people who have yet to be convicted of any crime. Authorities already have too much leeway in limiting Second Amendment rights.
Most mass shooters offer few, if any, clues about their plans. Most of them dont even have a criminal record. Even if they had, theres a big difference between threatening imminent violence and saying hateful things. Yet, Chipman seems to believe that cops, using their precrime clairvoyance, should be empowered to unilaterally determine what constitutes hate speech before seizing guns from people who have done nothing illegal an authoritarian twofer.
Theres of surplus of historical evidence demonstrating why such power should never be afforded the state. And one need only listen to Chipman conflate conservatism and white supremacy and exaggerate the prevalence of gun violence and domestic terrorism during his BBC interview to understand how quickly that power would be abused.
Maybe Im an outlier on this issue, but Ive gone my entire life without ever feeling frustrated about the right of others to publicly express opinions even reprehensible ones. Its not as if theyre going to stop believing or feeling stupid things simply because the ATF director threatens them. Of course, Chipman is free to believe whatever he likes, as well. Its appalling, however, that someone with such disdain for the Constitution has been nominated for a position that is charged with upholding the law.
