OSU study will provide insight into optimal nutrition for bees – Oregon State University
Posted: July 27, 2021 at 1:13 pm
CORVALLIS, Ore. A new grant will allow Oregon State University researchers to study the nutritional value of more than 100 bee-pollinated crops, native plants and commonly used ornamental plants, a project that could help scientists better understand the global decline of bee populations.
Certain plants attract bees more than others, but whether those flowers contain the optimal nutrition needed for the insects has yet to be determined. The grant will allow researchers in the Honey Bee Lab led by Ramesh Sagili, OSU associate professor of apiculture and OSU Extension specialist, and Priyadarshini Chakrabarti, former OSU research assistant and new assistant professor at Mississippi State University, to begin to fill that knowledge gap.
With the $500,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agricultures Agriculture and Food Research Initiative, the team hopes to improve bee nutrition by building a database of macro and micronutrients found in the flowering plants used in the study. Poor nutrition due to agricultural mono-cropping and loss of habitat is an important factor in bee declines and the researchers anticipate alleviating this problem by providing better forage choices for bees backed by science-based results.
In addition to beekeepers, land managers, conservation groups will benefit from the data base. The public also will be able to use the information to choose the most nutritious plants for both native and managed bees.
With global decline in both native and honey bee populations and given the importance of honey bees for commercial pollination of hundreds of crops, choosing the best supplemental forage can help mitigate poor nutrition in bees. Well-nourished bees can also better withstand things that plague them like Varroa mites, pesticides, parasites and loss of habitat.
If you look at it from the human side, the healthier you are, the better you can fight off diseases, parasites and other health issues, Sagili said. With a better immune system, youre stronger and more resilient. Its the same with bees. Nutrition is their first line of defense against stressors.
Optimal nutrition has been shown to enhance resistance to stressors and increase survival and longevity, according to Chakrabarti. Even though there has been much research done to determine the causes of honey bee decline, few studies have addressed the underlying problems of bee nutrition.
For the past few years there has been a significant movement to improve nutrition and increase habitat for bees and to provide better forage, Chakrabarti said. For farmers, its important to understand the nutrition contained in pollens from significant crops like almonds in California, a $7 billion industry that relies on honey bees for pollination.
There are efforts geared toward famers so that they can plant supplemental forage adjacent to their orchards or fields to provide the additional nutritional resources that bees need, Sagili said. Seventy-five percent of honey bee hives managed by beekeepers in the United States go to Californias Central Valley in February to pollinate the almonds and they need forage before the almonds come into bloom. Thats a big, big problem. There might be some wild mustard or dandelion, but its really meager and there is no other source of pollen for bees.
Beekeepers feed the honey bees with sugar syrup and protein supplements when natural forage is unavailable, which is not the optimal diet but can sustain bees for the short term.
The impacts of certain fungicides called sterol biosynthesis inhibitors or SBI will also be investigated to determine their effect on the availability of pollen sterol and bee health, Sagili said. Pollen sterols are a type of lipids that are required for development and growth of bees. Findings from examining the impacts of SBI fungicides on sterol availability in pollen will not only show how these widely used fungicides may affect bees, but also demonstrate for the first time if this group of fungicides could compromise the quality of pollen.
Sagili and Chakrabarti are looking for community scientists to help with the study. Those interested in participating can contact Sagili at 541-737-5460; or [emailprotected], and Priya Chakrabarti at [emailprotected]).

Silica: The Secret Skin Supplement We Should Be Taking – Longevity LIVE – Longevity LIVE
Posted: at 1:13 pm
With the beauty industry expanding at a rapid pace, we are often introduced to new supplements and ingredients. The most recent rising star is silica. Its said to have a radiant effect on your complexion. Its also claimed that it can leave you with a healthy glow from the inside out.
This is a beauty-boosting supplement that you have probably never heard of until now, but watch this space, in the months to come, silica is set to be the next big thing in skincare.
In science-speak, when the elements silicon and oxygen are combined, the result is silica, which is also known as silicon dioxide. This under-the-radar mineral naturally occurs in the human body but can be derived from several places, such as quartz dust and dark leafy vegetables.
It also plays an important role in collagen synthesis. Since silica is required for building collagen, without it, we would literally fall apart.
Silica is a superstar in the beauty world. It supports your bodys ability to produce collagen and maintain healthy hair, skin, and nails. Were talking thicker hair with less breakage, firmer and smoother skin, and long, strong nails. The fact is that this wonder mineral is an overachiever. It also gives you a glow because it increases the transport of nutrients and oxygen to your skin. The result is hydrated skin.
If silica is a naturally occurring mineral in our body, why should we supplement it? The sad truth is that silica production slows from around the age of 25, just like collagen. I suggest that you look to start taking silica in your late 20s/early 30s, or when you see fine lines appearing.
Prevention is always better than cure. There are many ways that you could increase your silica intake, such as through your diet. These foods include green beans, bananas, leafy greens, brown rice, and lentils.
That said, the only way to get enough to see a marked difference is by taking a supplement. As a supplement, silica can be taken in gel, capsule, or liquid form. My recommended brand for adding silica to your daily routine is Alexia Rich. Be sure to only use Orgono Silica. Its a quartz derivative thats clinically proven to be 400% easier for your body to absorb than other types.
Remember, like any other supplement, it will take some time to see results. Over time, you should notice a difference. Your complexion might become brighter. Your skin will be firmer, glowing, and have improved elasticity with increased hydration. It also helps reduce pores, blemishes, and wrinkles. It can also rebuild joint cartilage, speed up recovery from exercise, improve digestion and detox your system.
Visit SkinMiles and sign up for a free Face2Face Assessment. You will receive personal recommendations from Dr. Nikolic for your skin type or skin concerns.

This Nutrition Method May Be The Key To Better Overall Health & Longevity – mindbodygreen.com

In the same family as functional medicine, functional nutrition is a personalized, systems-oriented approach that goes beyond managing the immediacy of symptoms and diseaseand rather looks at the whole person.
"With an emphasis on personalized food and lifestyle approaches to wellness and disease management, functional nutrition focuses on the patient (not just on their disease or condition) while taking a holistic approach to optimizing an individual's health based on their unique needs," says registered dietitianJess Cording, M.S., R.D., CDN.
Through the lens of this integrative, science-informed approach to well-being, functional nutrition reaffirms the dynamic interconnectedness of the body, by acknowledging how each organ and system operate together to achieve optimal function. It recognizes that food is not only a source of fuel but an exceptional device to address the underlying basis of disease while paving the way toward ultimate, everyday wellness.
As for the strategic nutrition itself, this method specifically emphasizes high-quality foods, phytonutrient diversity, plus their role in supporting physiological function and overall health.

OCEANIA/PAPUA NEW GUINEA – A Church with God as the epicenter among the challenges of evangelization – Agenzia Fides
Posted: at 1:13 pm
Port Moresby (Agenzia Fides) - "There is nothing impossible when God is by our side", says Mgr. Rozario Menezes, SMM, in relation to the challenges of evangelization faced by the diocese of Lae, of which he has been bishop since December 15, 2018. "If we really want to build the Church, we must build it with God at the center. Only by acting in this direction can we guide our people to reach the Kingdom of God", explains the prelate in the note from the Secretariat of the Bishops' Conference of Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands sent to Fides. The Bishop affirmed that, despite the many efforts, without the grace of God very little can be done, while "nothing is impossible for God when we put him at the center of our Church". Most of the parishes located in the cities are facilitated by the dissemination of their events via radio and social media, which is not the case for those parishes located in the rural areas of the province. "The privileges in the city of knowing what is happening in the Church should be the same in the villages which, unfortunately, do not have social media and the Internet", says Mgr. Rozario. "Our young people are very active, many have reached the 12th grade of education", he said, underlining the vital role played by young people in the local Church and inviting them to live according to God's standards in order to experience a true change of attitude and mentality that lead to becoming evangelizers in Lae. "Thanks to the dedication of Father Brian Nonde, Regional Secretary of the Mariannhill Missionaries of PNG and Director of the local Catholic radio station FM 103.7, many of our young people have received training courses to improve the dissemination of Church stories and events". Mgr. Rozario also assured that, to improve the approach to evangelization, a diocesan pastoral plan is currently being studied and will be announced shortly. (AP) (Agenzia Fides, 23/7/2021)

The changing map of economics – Brookings Institution
Posted: at 1:13 pm
The International Economic Associations triennial World Congress has long been one of the most important global gatherings of economists, owing to its success in bringing together researchers and policymakers from the poorest to the wealthiest corners of the world. The 19th edition of the event earlier this month, albeit held via Zoom instead of in person, was no exception.
One recurring theme of this years Congress was that the global economy and capitalism are at a crossroads. While the COVID-19 crisis was the immediate impetus for this view, other major shiftsfrom climate change and the rise of digital technology to the changing nature of labor marketshave been increasingly salient. The pandemic has merely accelerated these shifts or thrown them into sharper relief.
COVID-19 has forced us into one kind of learning by doing, an idea that the Nobel laureate economistKenneth J. Arrow, who emphasized that much learning is the product of experience, developed in the abstract a long time ago. We have learned to give lectures and hold conferences by Zoom, and to make complex decisions in meetings conducted via Webex. People have suddenly realized that they had been spending more time than necessary in the office, and that they can do much of their work from home. And we have learned to shop at home, too, via digital platforms.
Economists and society as a whole must confront profound intellectual and moral challenges in order to come to grips with the changing world.
As a result, demand for office and retail space will fall, even after the pandemic. And because more people will have the freedom to work remotely, property prices will gradually rise where they were previously low and fall where they were high, leading to greater leveling.
On the other hand, salary disparities will increase, because the labor market will tend to be more of a common pool with heightened competition for talent. Most important, globalization, after some initial stumbles, will accelerate, with rapid growth in cross-country outsourcing. This is likely to have a significant effect on labor markets, national politics, and the nature of conflict.
Understanding this new world will require major breakthroughs in economic thinking. Economics normally proceeds by contesting the explicit assumptions and axioms on which theory is built. But all scientific disciplines also have hidden assumptions that are so deeply embedded that we do not state them explicitly and often forget they exist. In their celebratedresearchin the 1950s that provided a formal structure for understanding Adam Smiths idea of the invisible hand, for example, Arrow and fellow Nobel laureate Grard Debreu showed the many assumptions that were needed for Smiths conjecture to be valid.
There were other assumptions that were taken for grantedsimply part of the woodwork of economicsincluding the symmetry of knowledge among buyers and sellers. One of the biggest breakthroughs of modern economics was the insight that knowledge is often asymmetric, and that this asymmetry can shatter the invisible hand. This breakthrough earned Joseph E. Stiglitz, George Akerlof, and Michael Spence the 2001 Nobel prize in economics, and led to new forms of regulation that made the modern economy possible. We owe many of our regulations concerning quality control and product standards to this breakthrough, which showed definitively that the markets invisible hand cannot ensure standards when information is asymmetric.
It remains to be seen what form the economics professions new intellectual discoveries will take and what regulations we will need to apply them. What is clear is that the strain humanity has imposed on the environment means growth as we currently know it cannot be sustained. But that does not mean we have to learn to live with lower growth. In fact, I believe future growth will be faster than we have seen thus far.
The lower-growth camps mistake stems from a common misunderstanding of GDP or national income. A higher GDP is often taken to indicate more wasteful consumption and consumerism of the kind we are indulging in now. But that need notand now must notbe the case.
The consumption of more art, music, and learning, as well as better health and greater longevity, are all components of GDP, and are, or can be, environmentally friendly. Reforming our regulatory system can foster rapid GDP growthbut with the content of GDP changing dramatically, and with a disproportionate amount of human labor directed to creative activities. The nature of reform for the new world is a big topic, but policymakers will need to focus on curricula that nurture creativity, because routine work will increasingly be automated; shift consumption away from environmentally wasteful goods; and redistribute wealth radically to lessen inequalities.
My recent research on group morality, however, highlights a caveat that we must address. When discussing matters like climate change and current global inequities, we urge people to be other-regarding. In other words, they should not be concerned solely about their own well-being but also consider the welfare of the current poor and future generations who will be affected by our decisions.
But as moral philosophers have long known, group morality is a problematic concept. I have recently tried to address the Samaritans Curse, whereby a future generation can end up being hurt when all individuals today take its well-being into consideration. This problem, like the prisoners dilemma but in the moral domain, can potentially defeat our best intentions.
So, the road ahead will not be easy. Economists and society as a whole must confront profound intellectual and moral challenges in order to come to grips with the changing world. But humans have done it before. One can only hope that our intelligence and resolve enable us to do it again.

Golden Goals: Countries still in pursuit of an Olympic medal ahead of Tokyo – USA TODAY
Posted: at 1:13 pm
Besides Team USA, make sure to watch these international Olympians
Team USA has a lot of stars on their roster, but you should also cheer for these international athletes who are medal favorites.
Sandy Hooper, USA TODAY
The United States leads all countries in Olympic medals. Despite boycotting the 1980 Summer Games in Moscow, the U.S. has nearly 3,000 medals close to double that of Germany, who comes in second.
But while the United States has had no difficulty collecting gold, silver and bronze throughout the years, some countries havent been so fortunate in achieving their golden goals. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognizes 206 National Olympic Committees (NOC) in addition to the Refugee Olympic Team, but over 70 countries that currently compete in the Games have never won an medal.
CHASING GOLD:Everything you will need to follow Team USA's quest for gold in Tokyo
TEXT WITH US AT TOKYO OLYMPICS:Subscribe to texts, where well be your official guide to the Games
From Monaco, a veteran of the Games, to South Sudan, officially recognized by the IOC in August 2015, here are some of the nations still looking to bring home an medal.
Out of the 206 countries and territories with a NOC, there are 72 that have never won a medal at the Olympics. That includes both the Summer and Winter Games, and several of these records are impacted by when a countrys NOC was recognized by the IOC. For example, North Macedonia has officially never won a medal because they havent competed in any Olympics yet under the country's new name.
Broken down by continent, Africa has the most countries 28 without a medal in the Games. While many of those are small territories and island nations, some of the countries without a win are Libya, Madagascar, Rwanda, Sierra Leone and Somalia.
Behind Africa is Asia, home to 13 countries without an medal, followed by Oceania with 12. Bangladesh, Cambodia and Nepal are some of Asian countries that havent been able to break through at the Games, while Guam and Papua New Guinea are among the countries in Oceania still looking for a medal.
In Europe, Albania and Bosnia & Herzegovina are the only non-microstates without an medal. Sarajevo, the capital of B&H, was the host city for the 1984 Winter Olympics, but the country has never won a medal since its independence from Yugoslavia in 1992. B&H and Macedonia havent been able to replicate the success of their former Yugoslavian counterparts Croatia and Slovenia, both of which have over 40 medals.
Only one country in South America is still waiting for its first medal. Bolivia first competed in the 1936 Summer Games in Berlin and swimmer Alberto Conrad Machuca was the countrys only Olympian. This year, the country will only be sending five athletes to Tokyo to compete in athletics, swimming and tennis.
Well, technically, Monaco has one bronze medal. Julien Medecin came in third for architecture in the art competition at the 1924 Olympics, but those medals arent included in official tallies.
In athletic competition, Monaco has sent a small team to all but three Olympics since the NOC debuted in the 1920 Antwerp Games, making the southern European country between France and the Mediterranean Sea, medal-less for over one hundred years.
Its not for lack of trying, though. Monaco has sent several prolific athletes to the Games, including rifle shooter Fabienne Pasetti, who has appeared in six Olympics between 1988 and 2008. She was also the first woman to represent Monaco in the Games. The second female Olympian from Monaco was swimmer Angelique Trinquier, who competed in the 100m backstroke in London.
Monaco will try for a medal any medal again in Tokyo. The NOC has six athletes in five events (athletics, judo, rowing, swimming, table tennis) and have a 50/50 split between men and women on the roster.
South Sudan declared independence from Sudan in 2011. Five years later, at the Rio Games in 2016, the country made its Olympic debut, sending three runners to compete in South America.
Prior to the 2016 Games, South Sudanese marathon runner Guor Maker competed at the 2012 London Games as an Independent Olympic Athlete. He finished 47th in London, and then dropped to 81st as a representative for South Sudan in 2016.
South Sudan will compete in Tokyo in a few days, but they have been in Japan far longer than any of their other competitors. Four track athletes and a coach from the worlds newest country have been stranded in Maebashi, a city northwest of Tokyo, since November 2019, when they arrived for the 2020 Olympics, which were still set to start in a little over six months.
Instead of forcing the team to return to South Sudan, a country still dealing with the repercussions of a civil war, Maebashis citizens embraced the team as their own. They raised donations of nearly $300,000 to support the training of the South Sudan track team.
Now, athletes like 21-year-old Abraham Majok, who runs the 1500m, are competing to foster unity in his divided country.
North Korea announced it would not compete in the Tokyo Games, citing coronavirus concerns as the reason for pulling out. This marks the first Summer Olympics that North Korea will miss since 1988, when the Games were hosted by Seoul in South Korea. Missing out on medals is no problem for North Korea, which already has over 50 since the country first competed in the 1972 Games.

Exciting times ahead for soccer talents in PNG – POST-COURIER
Posted: at 1:12 pm
BY SIMON KESLEP
There is light at the end of the tunnel for soccer talents in PNG and the rest of the Oceania region.
Ticking the boxes step by step and working behind the scenes in terms of setting up the much anticipated Oceania League is what PNG Football Association (PNGFA) president John Kapi Natto is passionate about.
This is one of the events which is close to my heart and we must have a vision.
When I first got into Oceania Football Confederation, I told the president if you and I have no vision for our youths for tomorrow then I am wasting my time in OFC.
I fixed PNGFA; I have set the road map now we have to set the vision for the future generation, we got to create a OFC professional league somewhere, sometime.
2023 will be the launching of the first OFC Professional League, said Kapi Natto who is also the chairman of the interim taskforce working to establish this new league.
He said the task force team commenced two years ago with its preparation and is now into the stages of financial module to identify which format to be used in 2023.
We are not wasting our time but living our young peoples dreams to become professional players someday.
For PNG, we might have two professional clubs that will be based in Port Moresby and going on home and away matches that is a great exciting way for our football to attract more young people, he said.
With the commencement of the 16th PNGFA Mens NSL season over the weekend, young promising talents including senior representative players from the 14 participating franchises have now been given the added boost to play for something which Kapi Natto is keen to see come into fruition.
The women as well as those who will be taking part at this years Youth League will also look forward to taking part in some of the key events PNGFA is embarking on.
PNGFA is embarking on platforms of competitions.
Just about six months ago, we started the Womens NSL and the competition will come back this year around September and October.
Our Youth League will also kick off for the first time at the end of this year both in the Northern and Southern conferences.
We believe in creating a pathway for youth in this country.
PNGFA is also bidding for the Womens World Cup qualifier to be played here in Port Moresby in the early 2022 because other countries could not let teams to go into their country because of COVID-19 restrictions.
We hope to put a good proposal to the Pandemic Controller and win the bid to bring the 10 countries into Port Moresby.
Our women are just on the verge of going into the World Cup, thats a great news and we hope that it will come into reality.
Kapi Natto said the PNG Kapul team (mens) will also travel overseas in January and February 2022 after COVID-19 restrictions denied their entry to Fiji and New Zealand for the World Cup qualifier.

How to protect your privacy online with Tor Browser …
Posted: at 1:12 pm
If you want to keep your web browsing private, you can use the Incognito mode in Chrome, Private Browsing in Firefox, InPrivate mode in Microsoft Edge, and so on. While this will prevent other people who use your computer from seeing your browsing history, it doesn't prevent your ISP from monitoring the sites you are visiting. You might well want to for any number of reason browse the internet completely anonymously, and this is precisely what Tor Browser offers.
Standing for The Onion Router, Tor offers multiple levels of protection to ensure that your online activities, location and identity are kept entirely private. Here are the steps you need to follow in order to install and use Tor Browser.
Start by downloading and installing Tor Browser. Click Finish once the installation is complete, and Tor will launch for the first time. You'll be greeted by a settings dialog that is used to control how you connect to the Tor network.
In most cases you should be able to just click the Connect button, but if you connect to the internet through a proxy you will need to click the Configure button to enter your settings.
There will be a slight delay while Tor establishes a connection to the network via relays the program warns that the initial connection could take as long as several minutes but once this connection has been made, the Tor browser will launch ready for use.
Tor is based on the same code as Firefox, so if you have used Mozilla's web browser everything should seem fairly familiar. Even if you haven't used Firefox before, it should not take you long before you start to feel at home it's not so different from the likes of Edge, Chrome and Safari.
Before you get started, it's worth noting that using Tor Browser is a balancing act between privacy/security and web usability. By default, security is set to Standard although this is still far more secure than any other web browser.
If you would like to increase this, click the onion icon to the left of the address bar and select Security Settings. Use the Security Level slider to choose your preferred level of protection, bearing in mind the warnings that appear about the features that may stop working on the sites you visit.
In order to get the most from Tor, you need to change a few of your browsing habits the first of these is the search engine you use.
Rather than opting for the likes of Google and Bing, the recommendation is that you instead turn to Disconnect.me. This is a site that prevents search engines from tracking you online, and you can use it in conjunction with Bing, Yahoo or DuckDuckGo.
While we're on the subject of changing habits, you also need to avoid installing browser extensions, as these can leak private information.
As you browse the internet, the Tor browser helps to keep you secure by avoiding directly connecting to websites. Instead, your connection is bounced around between multiple nodes on the Tor network, with each jump featuring anonymizing.
This not only makes it all but impossible for a website to track who and where you are, it is also responsible for the slightly slow performance you will notice while browsing with Tor.
If you feel performance is unusually low or a page is no longer responding, you can start a new Tor circuit by clicking the hamburger icon and selecting the 'New Tor Circuit for this Site' option, which will force Tor to find a new route to the site.
The new circuit option only applies to the current active tab, and it may be that you want a more drastic privacy safety net. Click the hamburger icon and select 'New Identity', bearing in mind that this will close and restart Tor in order to obtain a new IP address.
When you connect to a site using Tor, you may notice that a popup appears warning you that a particular site is trying to do something that could potentially be used to track you. Just how often these messages appear will depend not only on the sites you visit, but also the privacy settings you have in place.
An important part of staying safe and anonymous online is ensuring that you use the HTTPS rather than HTTP versions of websites. So you don't have to remember to do this for every site you visit, Tor Browser comes with the HTTPS Everywhere extension installed by default. This will try to redirect you to the secure version of any website if it is available, but you should keep an eye on the address bar as an extra safeguard.
If you are connected to a secure site, you will see a green padlock icon. If this isn't present, click the 'i' icon for more information.
The most secure way to connect to the internet through Tor, however, is to visit .onion sites. These are also known as hidden Tor services, and they are inaccessible to search engines; to find them, you have to visit them directly.
To help you to find such sites, there are a number of .onion directories out there. These sites can only be accessed using Tor, but you do need to take care it's quite common to come across sites with illegal content, selling illegal products or promoting illegal activities.
If you want to take your privacy to the next level, you can connect to a VPN before starting the Tor browser. The VPN will not be able to see what youre doing in the Tor browser, and youll get the added benefit that no Tor node will be able to see your IP address. It will also prevent your network operators from even knowing that you are using Tor, which is helpful if the Tor Network happens to be blocked where you are.
