The Many Faces of God – SpokaneFVS – spokanefavs.com

Posted: at 12:50 am

By Pete Haug

God created man in his own image. And man, being a gentleman, returned the favor.

The square/circle atop a human figure on the left evolves from the earliest oracle bones through early bronzeware, then through engraved seals, and finally to character of todays integrated semantic elements combining a line (one) on top and a man with outstretched arms. (great). Over time the character changes to emphasize man, with gradual anthropomorphizing of the Creator.

Images of God vary infinitely. No two are identical. Each human mind conceives its own image of God. Even atheists must create an image they can reject. Id never really considered these things until I taught English in China, where we studied references to Christianity in English literature.

The word for God in modern Chinese is Shangdi, which transliterates to supreme deity. Shangdi is used to represent the biblical God, specifically the God of Christianity. Perhaps because the Bible alludes to Jesus as God, many Chinese feel the Christian God is anthropomorphic.

A more traditional word used to represent God as an unknowable benevolent essence overseeing creation is Tian or Heaven. Tian predates modern, officially atheistic, Chinese culture by millennia. The world at large became aware of Tian on June 4, 1989, when Chinese troops, in an act of supreme irony, massacred student protesters in Beijings Tiananmen Square, just south of Tiananmen, Gate of Heavenly Peace.

A Chinese friend first made me aware of the distinction between Shangdi and Tian around 2000. My literature students confirmed that differentiation as we discussed God. Most students I encountered had qualities I would deem spiritual, characteristics perhaps influenced by the millennia-old cultural concept of tian.

The contemporary ideograph of Tian () evolved from Chinese antiquity. Its origin and evolution sheds light on how Chinese people perceive God, unknown and powerful, yet benevolent. Oracle-bone and bronzeware engravings of Tian, dating from the late second millennium BC, are composed of two parts: a stick-figure person topped by a circle or square head, which signifies the essence of tian above the person. During thousands of years, tian evolved to , which combines one (the top line representing the numeral 1) with great (a man with outstretched arms).

Over centuries, Chinese people have come to portray God anthropomorphically with rustic depictions of the relation between God and humans. In Chinese culture the broad concept of God, represented by all kinds of visual figures of gods, has been ubiquitous within and outside of religious contexts.

Because we live in a material world, its difficult to detach ourselves from surroundings we perceive with our senses. This is why we construct tangible idols. Yet religions encourage us to seek transcendency beyond our corporeal, sensate surroundings.

One of the earliest recorded examples is found in Exodus, when God revealed to Moses the Ten Commandments that would shape civilizations for thousands of years. The second commandment, Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image in Deuteronomy, makes clear that the commandments purpose is to protect Gods followers from idolatry.

Different religions understand idolatry differently. Although the Quran doesnt explicitly ban images, hadith (Islamic traditions) address the creation of images in various ways. Most Muslims avoid visual depictions of Muhammad or other prophets, and some take offense at such visual depictions. In other Abrahamic religions, idolatry connotes the worship of somethingother than God as if it were God. Its easier to relate to a material form than an unknowable Essence.

The Bahai Faith maintains similar traditions. Although photographs of Bahaullah exist, they are displayed only on rare occasions and with utmost respect.

As an agnostic I couldnt relate to theologies, but the natural world kept me from becoming an atheist. I wasnt a pantheist, but the beauty of nature provided spiritual sustenance that uplifted me. Similarly, the beauty of music created in praise of God, liturgical music, prevented my total denial.

Today Im comfortable believing that the unknowable Essence called God exists. God has always been there, much like the electromagnetic spectrum. Until a few centuries ago, humans were aware only of the visible portion of that spectrum. Science has since taught us to harness parts. I write this column on my computer, courtesy of that spectrum.

We dont fully understand many forces in the universe. Although we can harness gravitys force, we cant fathom what it is. Other forces exist that were not even aware of. Belief in God as a force generates miracles, occurrences we cant explain. History provides evidence of unnumbered martyrs willing to die for the God they worshipped, yet couldnt see.

Each mental image, understanding, of God is unique because each human is unique, shaped by interactions between genes and environment. But we all live together, depend on each other in myriad ways. Free choice allows us to choose how we interact. Teachings of the great religions provide guidance for those interactions.

Ultimately each of us exercises free choice throughout our lifetimes. One hopes a critical mass of us will choose wisely.

Pete would like to acknowledgethe invaluable input of a dear Chinese friend, who prefers to remain anonymous.

Meyer, Krauss, Nelson: UAPs, UFOs, and Panspermia – Discovery Institute

Posted: at 12:50 am

Photo credit: Dino Reichmuth on Unsplash.

Asnoted already, in aNew York Postop-ed over the weekend, Stephen Meyer put UAPs (Unidentified Aerial Phenomena, formerly known as UFOs) into a helpful perspective. See, Why God is still the best scientific theory to explain our life on Earth. He points out that scientists have been talking about aliens for decades in the context of so-called directed panspermia. But, says Meyer, this is all way of evading, unsatisfactorily, the mystery of lifes origin, whether that happened on Earth or on another planet.

Atheist Lawrence Krauss writes about the UAPs, not panspermia, over atQuillette. Hes quite sure: Whatever It Is, It Aint Aliens. Theres the usual sneering reference to little green men. But he offers five serious reasons for thinking the mysterious aerial phenomena cant be aliens. Those are topped by:

1. The Laws of Physics: Travel from another star in any reasonable time requires near-light speed travel. A ship propelled by onboard conventional rocket fuel would require more fuel than there is mass in the visible universe to accelerate to near light speed and slow down at the end of the voyage, so clearly some more advanced fuel would be required. But even using nuclear fusion one would use more than 2,000 times the mass of the ship in fuel for each acceleration and deceleration to and from near-light speed. Basic physics constraints imply that any on-board propulsion technology that could power a conventional ship-sized spacecraft to travel from one solar system to another at near light speed and decelerate it within our solar system would require using energy that is comparable to the entire amount of power used by all of humanity at the current time. Hard to imagine any civilization devoting such extensive resources to visit us only to hang around secretly spying on aircraft carriers, or abducting humans to perform kinky experiments.

Philosopher of science Paul Nelson isnt so sure. As he told me:

I dont take a position on the cause of the anomalies (who the heck knows), but I do argue that Krausss counterarguments all run afoul of his limited scientific imagination. The key is Clarkes 3rd Law (from the prescient science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke): Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. Krauss gives reasons, based on our current physics and technological limits, why UAPs cannot be advanced extraterrestrial technology.

But, like many skeptics, he lets his skepticism put shackles on his imagination. Skepticism should always come packaged with a hugeceteris paribus(all things being equal) clause. Problem is, if ETs exist, it is entirely likely that all things are NOT equal, especially with respect to the limits of THEIR physical knowledge.

Parallel: Krausss debunking is logically equivalent to Aristotle snorting with derision, or even David Hume, if we told them that in 2021 it will be routine to fly several miles above the surface of the Earth, close to the speed of sound, while drinking Cabernet and listening to Mozart on a pair of noise-cancelling headphones (whatever those are). Others have been eloquent on this point. If new and surprising physics remains to be discovered and why not? ETs may already have found and exploited it. Hence their technology may be as indistinguishable from magic, to us, as an iPhone or a jumbo jet would be to Aristotle. Clarkes 3rd Law.

And Aristotle was one smart dude.

Who can argue with that last observation? I also like Pauls point about Who the heck knows? The puzzling fact that we cant identify the UAPs, in light of our own limited scientific imagination, should not be permitted to manipulate us into a false dilemma of Its either aliens or it must be some familiar earthly phenomenon. It may well be in fact, probably is neither.

A biotech company Nootropics Frontline is aiming to advance the weapons of cognitive enhancement – Digital Journal

Posted: at 12:49 am

In this press release, Nootropics Frontline is aiming to define the long-term mission statement of the company, which is to advance the technologies of neuro-enhancement and their accessibility in the civilization

Nootropics Frontline, a biotechnology company, has been long involved in the nootropic compound manufacturing & distribution market for individual scientists, private research laboratories, and global research universities all over the world. The companys field of business is in the developing and selling of nootropic substances used in scientific research studies neuro-enhancement.

Nootropics Frontline company is known for its quality and premium nootropic compound reference materials catalog, which are either manufactured by 3rd parties, who are extensively vetted through 3rd party analysis procedures, or manufactured exclusively by Nootropics Frontline research lab division. This year, in 2021, Nootropics Frontline was the first company to manufacture a compound Tabernanthalog to be sold as a reference material, which was pre-ordered by a number of private research laboratories, that were aiming to expand on the in vitro and in vivo research behind it.

In this press release, Nootropics Frontline is aiming to define the long-term mission statement of the company, which is to advance the technologies of neuro-enhancement and their accessibility in the civilization. I believe the market for cognition enhancement will play an incredibly important role in our society as it progresses through the automation of low-skilled jobs, thus the demand for having peak intellectual capabilities by humans is inevitably going to only increase. says Gintas Z., the Managing Director of Nootropics Frontline.

The cognitive enhancement market is already booming, and the United States military has been already researching ways for a long time to prevent their soldiers from losing their peak intellectual capabilities during combat in a foreign land. While many of the nootropic compounds are not yet allowed to be marketed for human consumption, they are purchasable for purposes of laboratory analysis and testing in rodents, because the demand by scientists to do research on them is increasing rapidly, as neuro-enhancement is a hot topic at the moment.

Nootropics Frontline claims that the cognitive enhancement market will continue to grow and that the company is committed to bringing cutting-edge nootropic compound manufacturing & productions standards to the market of scientific reference materials.

Cycling Supplements: What Amateurs Can Learn From The Pros – Coach

Posted: at 12:49 am

It should go without saying that as long as you eat a well-balanced diet, you dont need supplements to support your training and racing, regardless of what exercise you like to do. However, theres also no doubt that supplements can make your life a lot easier in many situations, and if you use the right ones at the right times they can help to boost your performance.

The quickest way to assess which are the most effective supplements is to find out what pros with access to the best support teams and the latest science are using. From there you can pick out what might work for you as an amateur keen on improving without necessarily going to quite the same extent as the pros.

To get the inside scoop on the supplements strategies of the pros we spoke to Professor James Morton, who is director of performance solutions at sports nutrition brand Science in Sport and was previously head nutritionist at Team Sky, as part of the launch for a new range called Beta Fuel.

It depends on the team, and the culture and the philosophy of the team, but from my experience of the peloton and my knowledge of World Tour teams, cyclists use a variety of supplements almost daily. Supplements can be used before training, during training, after training, with main meals and before sleep.

Most teams now would probably have some form of protein supplementation before or during the ride, usually in the form of a whey protein drink. They might have some protein at breakfast, or they might have it in a bottle on the bike.

At breakfast, they may also use some vitamin and mineral supplements, and some electrolytes for hydration, and maybe even some caffeine supplements before the ride starts.

During the ride itself, it depends on the duration and the intensity, but they might have protein within the first 60 to 90 minutes. If it is a higher-intensity ride theres more emphasis on carbohydrates usually between 30g to 90g per hour in the form of drinks, gels and solid foods. Caffeine normally is used around 30 to 45 minutes before you need its desired effect, so it could be 30 to 45 minutes before a hard interval session or a hard climb.

The daily protein requirements are probably around 30g every three to four hours. A long ride could be six hours long. If you have your breakfast at 8am and start your training at 10am, then you might not be home until 4pm. Youve effectively gone the whole day under-consuming protein. Then you start to degrade your own muscle protein stores. Consuming protein during exercise protects against that.

It all depends on the ride and the goal of the ride, but usually riders start with solid foods for the first two or three hours things like homemade rice cakes, energy bars, bananas, small sandwiches or panini. They tend to be digested slightly more slowly.

Then as they reach the second half or final third of the ride when the intensity starts to pick up, riders will switch towards more gels. Sometimes the fuelling strategy might be entirely based on fluids, if we havent got time to physically unwrap food and want to have access to carbohydrate as quickly as possible, or if its a really hot race. Thats why we made the Beta Fuel drink, which is 80g of carbohydrate in a 500ml serving, equivalent to four rice cakes.

The traditional ratio is 2:1 of maltodextrin to fructose. Thats widely studied. But actually, if you change the ratio to 1:0.8 [as in Beta Fuel], it allows you to utilise more of the carbohydrate that youve ingested. So in other words, more of the carbohydrate is actually delivered to the muscles and used to produce energy. The phrase we use is oxidation efficiency.

More often than not theyll consume a recovery drink within minutes of finishing the ride. And then usually 45 to 60 minutes later they will have whole foods for recovery.

Id probably go back to basics and make sure that you have some form of protein supplementation available to help top off your daily protein requirements and aid recovery during your training schedule. Thats normally whey protein, but of course if you want to use plant proteins you can do so. Then on the carbohydrate side, its about having access to fluids, gels and energy bars.

Carbohydrates and protein are the key supplements for pro and amateur riders alike, but there are several others to consider. We asked Morton to give the details on some other commonly used supplements.

There are several electrolytes, but sodium is the most important one its the predominant one that we lose in our sweat. So electrolyte supplementation before and after exercise is especially important, especially on a hot day when your sweat rate has increased.

Nootropics is a term for compounds that can enhance cognitive function. Caffeine is essentially a nootropic, as are other ingredients like theanine and taurine. Its a broad term for anything that can improve cognitive function. That means reaction times, your ability to make decisions, memory, focus, alertness and so on.

Beta-alanine and sodium bicarbonate are designed to act as buffers against the metabolic acidosis that you get in high-intensity exercise. They effectively allow you to ride at a certain power output for longer.

You would take sodium bicarbonate around 70 to 90 minutes before a hard training session, especially if its an interval session. Professionals would also take it before time trials or even during the race itself, around 60 to 90 minutes before a hard climb or a hard stretch of the race.

Beta-alanine is a supplement that you take daily to load within the muscle. Take around 3-6g a day for at least four weeks before your event or consistently during training.

Creatine will help generate energy for high-intensity exercise and also improve recovery in between repeated sprints. Its traditionally thought of as something used to build muscle for strength or power sports, but it has been proven to help any time that you want to produce force quickly and repetitively. For example,on a 45-minute climb with repeated attacks, creatine could potentially help improve power output.

You normally load creatine and theres two ways to do that: 20g per day for five days, or 3g per day for 30 days.

We spoke to Professor James Morton as part of the launch of the new Beta Fuel range, which includes drinks, gels and chew bars with carbs in a 1:0.8 maltodextrin to fructose ratio

How much are Boston Celtics Marcus Smart, Robert Williams worth in contract extension talks? – masslive.com

Posted: at 12:48 am

Welcome to a new job, Brad Stevens. Now negotiate how much Robert Williams III is potentially worth.

Thats at least one of Stevens many duties in the coming weeks and months as he shapes the Celtics roster to a contender. Its all about shaping the Cs to success around Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum.

Williams, who was drafted in 2018, can sign an extension starting this offseason. Thats another challenge for Stevens. Williams holds seemingly all the potential in the world as Bostons center of the future, but his injury-prone career muddies up how much he can make an impact.

Of course, Williams isnt the only player whos looking for an extension. Marcus Smart is in a similar spot, entering the final year on his contract and searching for some long-term stability with the only franchise hes ever known.

Both players hold intriguing value, both on-court and in trade talks. Smarts an expiring contract while also being a valuable role player; that makes him a target from potentially interested executives.

Heres a look at Smart and Williams, along with how much they could be worth.

Marcus Smart

2021-22 salary: $14.3 million. Final year of a four-year, $52 million contract. Averaged a career-best 13.1 points and 5.7 assists per game last season.

One of the fortunate parts of Smarts future in Boston comes from Stevens promotion. Stevens is a big Smart advocate and sees his value beyond the on-court production, whether that be as a playmaker or defender. Newly-hired Celtics coach Ime Udoka appears to be in the same spot, adding Smart as one of the pillars of the team.

The Celtics are in a tricky spot with their salary cap. Overspending on Smart can hamstring their finances, just when they cleared it up with the Kemba Walker trade. Much of that future is dependent on if the Celtics re-sign Evan Fournier this summer, too. Bostons also looking to stay away from the repeater tax in the future.

Smarts likely looking for a modest raise while solidifying his near-future in Boston. Hes a bargain at his current salary, and a few more million on top should still mean a nice fit on the roster from a financial standpoint. If Smart creeps north of $19 million or so, then it could get costly.

But a slight overpay might still be worth it for the Celtics to retain Smart, their emotional leader. His tough, defensive-minded play should mesh well with Udoka, who earned his chops in the league with a similar style.

Smarts playmaking also becomes more valuable as the Celtics still search for some scoring and a point guard. He led Boston in assists last season and is a solid secondary playmaker, who can even slide in as the primary point guard. While the offseason is young and the Celtics do have some options Smart has some leverage there.

Robert Williams III

2021-22 salary: $3.6 million. Final year of a four-year, $9.3 million rookie contract. Averaged a career-best 8.0 points and 6.9 rebounds per game last season.

Williams had easily the best year of his young pro life, playing a career-high 52 games last season despite the shortened schedule. Of course, he was still hampered by injuries which is the main knock on him. He set a franchise-playoff record with nine blocks in Game 1 against the Nets in the playoffs, then couldnt make an impact the rest of the series because of injury.

The Celtics were cautious with Williams all season, limiting minutes despite fans clamoring for more of the 23-year-old big man. Williams showcased some impressive playmaking ability as a passing big, which coupled well with his athleticism as he soared for high-flying lobs.

So whats the best route and salary for Williams? When hes on the court, hes a difference-maker who fits well with Tatum and Browns timelines. But it doesnt seem like Williams can consistently play a full, 82-game season throughout his career. The Celtics are most likely going to be cautious once again, limiting his playing time as he rarely goes above the 25-minute mark.

Williams is worth more than a $10 million salary pending his health. Thats what murks up all of the uncertainty. Theres also the chance both sides agree to a long-term deal thats not worth much, but secures the financial future for Williams.

Its a risk for the Celtics, but if Williams pans out then hell be on a bargain. Its a similar principle to when Boston recently gave Brown his contract, which looks like a steal as Brown ascended to his All-Star self last season. There are differing factors with Williams, but the risk could be worth it for the Celtics as they need at least a few breaks to get back into championship form.

The Sims 4 UI Cheats Extension not working fix – Game Revolution

Posted: at 12:48 am

The Sims 4 is one of precious few PC games with a wide variety of mods and software-based customizations. Unfortunately, game mods can sometimes be fickle, either choosing when to work or being outright busted. In the case of The Sims 4 UI Cheats Extension, the mod will sometimes appear to work but not actually do anything. Heres what you can do to fix the problem.

If The Sims 4 UI Cheats Extension is not working, its probably because either the game or mod is out of date. To fix the problem, you need to make sure your copy of the UI Cheats Extension is compatible with your version of The Sims 4. Otherwise, it may be conflicting with another mod.

In most cases, this is a very simple fix. Each version of the UI Cheats Extension is designed to work with a specific version of The Sims 4. According to the UI Cheats Extension Patreon page, latest version 1.26 only works with The Sims 4 version 1.77.131. Maxis just released patch version 1.77.131.1030 earlier today, and while the update shouldnt break the extension, strange behavior may be possible.

To fix the problem, make sure your copy of The Sims 4 is completely up to date. Then, make sure youve installed the latest version of the UI Cheats Extension. Assuming you dont have any other mods or extensions causing interference, the mod should work as intended.

The extensions Patreon page also mentions this fix specifically, saying If you experience UI issues from this mod (such as missing interface, graphical or textual glitches on UI panels, freezing menus, etc.), it is always because there is a mismatch between your game version and the mod version.

In other words, the Sims 4 UI Cheats Extension wont work if the game and mod arent running compatible versions. Youll need the latest update to The Sims 4 and the UI Cheats Extension in order to fix the problem. Otherwise, you may be running into a conflict with one of your other game mods. For more help with Maxis popular life management game, check out our selection of The Sims 4 guides.

More than one kid has wrapped the leg of their understanding pet, pretending to be a veterinarian. But to help move this game of pretending to a profession in later years, theTexas A&M AgriLife Extension Servicecreated the 4-H Veterinary Science Camps.

The goal of the 4-H Veterinary Science Camp is to provide experiential learning opportunities for students participating in theVeterinary Science Certificate Program, VSCP, where they can learn basic clinical skills for small animal and large animal veterinary medicine under the direction of a veterinarian.

More than 275 youth applied this year from 11 states and one territory for the opportunity to participate in one of the three-day camps, and only 75 spots were available, said Tyler Vogel, AgriLife Extensionprogram specialist in theDepartment of Animal Sciencewithin theCollege of Agriculture and Life Sciencesand one of the events facilitators.

These camps are an event that can provide hands-on veterinary experiences to those students who have said since they were 6 years old that they want to be a veterinarian when they grow up, said Susan Culp, DVM, AgriLife Extension veterinarian and event facilitator in the Department of Animal Science. These camps have given the kids, especially those from urban areas with little livestock experience, the opportunity to experience things that maybe they have never had the opportunity to experience. These kids desperately want the hands-on opportunities with animals.

Expanding the camp opportunities

The first camp was in 2014, when Joe Mask, Ph.D., the AgriLife Extension youth veterinary science specialist at the time, felt youth going through the certified veterinary assistant curriculum needed something more.

The first camp was hosted at Texas A&M University in conjunction with 4-H Roundup to allow the youth to go through the camp and then compete at the Skillathon. This path was followed for two years before a second camp was added at West Texas A&M University, WTAMU, in Canyon.

In 2018, Vogel was hired, allowing for the expansion and growth of the program. And in 2019, a third camp was planned in partnership with Christine Hoskinson, a licensed veterinary technician and assistant director for the Veterinary Technology Program at the Texas A&M University-Kingsville.

Christine hit the ground running, planning for the 2020 camp, but then COVID-19 happened, and the first camp that was scheduled there was canceled, Culp said. This year, we are holding all three camps for the first time: June 7-9 in Kingsville, June 14-16 at College Station and July 12-14 at WTAMU.

Camper selection

The camps are aimed at junior high and high school students, Vogel said. These students gain access to hands-on veterinary skills taught by industry leaders in education, animal science and veterinary medicine. Initially, they were only open to 4-Hers.

This year, though, he said they opened it to all students 13-18 years old and not just from Texas, as the camps are rapidly becoming a signature event and garnering far greater interest than camper spots available.

Because there is so much interest, weve developed a blind application process, and campers are selected and assigned to a camp, based on their answers to their questions, Vogel said. Its very objective to recognize the students who are very interested in the information and animal experience.

The camps are 90% veterinary science-focused, with the remainder being certifications in Beef Quality Assurance, BQA, and Pork Quality Assurance Plus, PQA Plus, he said.

We want these students to understand why we do the things we do. We also talk about animal welfare and animal rights; the goal is to make sure these kids know why these are important issues, what the truth is, and how they can help defend against misinformation.

Skills learned in the 4-H Veterinary Science CampStudents attending camp deal with a variety of animals, including livestock and smaller animals, Vogel said.

When studying cattle, they learn about chute safety, cattle handling, physical exams, dystocia, pulling calves, large animal instruments and when and how they are used. The equine portion discusses how to safely interact with horses, stalls, leg bandaging, physical exams, aging and injections.

When students move to the small animal side of things, the camp uses stuffed animals to allow them to learn how to interact with clients, ask the right questions, conduct physical exams, use small animal instrumentation, and discuss fecal examinations and why they are necessary.

In addition to the three-day overnight camps, two one-day camps were offered in El Paso on June 30 and July 1 that attracted another 59 youth.

This is the first time that we are expanding our footprint out to the El Paso area, Culp said. The one-day camps provide both large and small animal experience and veterinary skills lessons, but also offer a different keynote speaker each day, focusing on advocacy and leadership.

Culp said that the reception from the entire El Paso veterinary medical community has been overwhelmingly positive, and she hopes that they can return to El Paso every year, possibly even offering more opportunities in the future.

Determining a path forward

These camps can help youth make better-informed decisions about a career path in the veterinary profession, and it helps them make that decision sooner, Culp said.

These camps are so formative to the participants lives. We wish we had the staffing to offer 10 or more veterinary science camps every year, as the demand is certainly there.
