A year of Hope: How UAE’s Mars mission has crossed science’s frontiers – The National
Posted: July 21, 2021 at 12:43 am
The UAE is marking one year since it launched the Arab worlds first mission to Mars.
On July 20, 2020, the Hope probe was carried to space aboard the H-IIA rocket from Tanegashima Space Centre in Japan.
After a solo journey of 493 million kilometres in seven months, the spacecraft successfully entered the orbit of Mars on February 9.
Since then, fascinating images of the planet and scientific readings of the Martian atmosphere have been made public.
Weve had quite a lot of wiggle room in addition to our planned parameters, and our confidence in our spacecraft has gone from strength to strength, said Omran Sharaf, project director of the mission at the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre.
We were able to cut the number of trajectory correction manoeuvres, perform additional observations during our flight to Mars and now have added a whole area of scientific study to the mission that I can only describe as a bonus. It has been a very busy year indeed for Hope.
The spacecraft will spend two years capturing data that scientists can use to better understand the atmospheric conditions on Mars and how the Red Planet dried out.
The National highlights some milestones since the launch of the UAEs mission to Mars.
On February 14, the first image of Mars taken by Hope was released.
It marked the spacecrafts arrival at the Red Planet.

Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, shared the image on social media, describing its transmission as "a defining moment in our history".
He said that the image "marks the UAE joining advanced nations involved in space exploration. We hope this mission will lead to new discoveries about Mars which will benefit humanity."
The photo showed the solar systems largest volcano, Olympus Mons, at sunrise.
Hopes Emirates exploration imager a high-resolution camera took the image 24,700 kilometres above the Martian surface.
The mission began capturing scientific data before its science phase began.
Hope is using an infrared spectrometer, exploration imager and ultraviolet spectrometer to record data from the planets atmosphere.
On May 24, all three instruments observed the planet to provide a snapshot of the Arabia Terra region.
The infrared spectrometer mapped the temperature of the atmosphere and how it warmed up over the course of the morning.
The Hope probe's ultraviolet spectrometer captured the distribution of atomic oxygen in the atmosphere of Mars. Courtesy Emirates Mars Mission
The exploration imager captured many photos. One in ultraviolet showed bright dust on the planet's surface, and an image captured in red band highlighted the thin water-ice clouds.
The ultraviolet spectrometer captured scientific readings that showed distribution of oxygen atoms in the planets upper atmosphere.
Only Nasas Viking and Mariner missions in the 1970s, and more recently the Sofia and Maven missions, have captured presence of atomic oxygen in Martian atmosphere before.
By studying distribution of oxygen, scientists can learn more about atmospheric erosion and how other gases escape the planet.
On June 30, rare images of the discrete aurora on Mars night side atmosphere taken by the Hope probe were released.
The data would help scientists understand the interaction of the atmosphere with solar particles.
Mars aurorae are an area of intense interest to the global scientific community, and their study has tremendous potential to challenge, expand and deepen our understanding of Mars atmosphere and its interaction with the planet and with solar energies, said Hessa Al Matroushi, the missions science lead.
We were hopeful that Emus [ultraviolet spectrometer] could make a contribution in this area but we now know with absolute certainty that contribution is going to be ground-breaking.
On the Hope probe's way to Mars, an additional scientific objective was assigned to the mission.
The ultraviolet spectrometer was activated to cross-calibrate with the Phebus spectrometer aboard the European Space Agencys BepiColombo spacecraft, which was on its way to Mercury.
Hope captured data on interplanetary dust, which is believed to have played an important role in the formation of the solar system 4.6 billion years ago.
The findings will be combined with data collected by BepiColombo.
All data observed so far will be released to the public in October.
Researchers will be able to use the data to study the atmospheric dynamics of Mars and understand why gases are escaping from its atmosphere, making it impossible for the planet to host life.
The spacecraft will continue observing the planet's upper and lower atmosphere until 2023.
Mr Sharaf previously told The National that this mission has paved the way for more deep space exploration missions by the UAE.
This platform is definitely the foundation for UAEs future outer space exploration missions that will be developed, he said.
The main core of the spacecraft, system architecture, design and knowledge are some things that can definitely be re-used. Hopefully, there will be some innovation added to it but, basically, this is the foundation.

Live Events Are Back In Las Vegas. Bruno Mars, Garth Brooks, Dave Chappelle, Justin Beiber And UFC 264 All Sell Out On The Same July Weekend. – Forbes

LAS VEGAS - : Exterior photo of the New York New York Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. ... [+] (Photo by Doubble Troubble/Getty Images)
Last weekend, Friday July 9thand Saturday 10th 2021 marked the full tilt resumption of ticketed entertainment in Las Vegas.High demand events were everywhere, but tickets were gone.I was in town for the World Ticket Conference, where ticket markets, suppliers, and vendors were all stunned to see the degree to which demand had reappeared after a Covid-19 shutdown which had lasted nearly sixteen months.
Normally, this is a pretty well connected group who knows how to get into an event. However, demand was so high that folks who run mega-million ticket dollar companies were scrambling to find any ticket for Chappelle, Garth, Bruno or even Cirque du Soleil. The town was full, and everyone wanted to be in one of the rooms where the party was going off.
Bruno Mars (Photo by Christopher Polk/Getty Images for NARAS)
Bruno Mars returned to the Park MGM theater with his full production show: lasers, fireworks, confetti, and a surprisingly tight production which emphasized the quality of his band, the ways in which they joined Bruno in alternately hyping the crowd, participating in the dancing or building the layers of sound behind Bruno who brought all of his many skills back to a public audience. This was a pop music concert with all the whistles and bells, and it was exactly what the audience had missed while sequestered at home during the pandemic.Bruno Mars was in top form, with multiple solo dancing sequences which were spotlight highlights of his show in addition to his journey through the deep playlist of hits he has created over the years.
Comedian Dave Chappelle (Photo by Sean Rayford/Getty Images)
Dave Chappelle and Joe Rogan played the MGM Grand Arena on both Thursday and Friday night. Here, more than 12,000 people showed up for a comedy show where tickets seemed to start at $250.00 and move quickly up from there. Both Bruno and Chappelle/Rogan used Yonder pouches to lock away fans telephones.Ive seen that before at smaller shows, but 12,000 people is a lot of folks to try to get into or out of an arena and the added time to lock and unlock pouches adds uncertainty to the timeline. However, it was refreshing to see people inside the venues interacting, rather spiraling every deeper into whichever siren calls flowed there way from deep inside some rabbit hole on the internet. It was also a credit to talent as an event which was insanely expensive had a production value that can be summed as this:a bare stage in the center of the floor with a stool and a microphone, some video screens so people on all sides of the stage could see and a DJ.Id be willing the bet the cost of the Las Vegas Metropolitan police shutting down all access points to the MGM Grand Arena with police cars and two trucks was at least as much as the entire production set used by Chappelle and Rogan.
It was Saturday night, the 10thof July which had me most curious. That night, Bruno played to his usual full house at the Park Theater. There were at least 6,300 in the room.Just across the access road at the T-Mobile arena was the UFC 264 McGregor-Poirier fight with Donald Trump among the 19,000 or so in attendance.Across the street the MGM Grand Arena held a viewing party for those who were unable to attend the UFC fight in person. And, diagonally across the 15 freeway Garth Brooks was playing to 67,000 at Allegiant stadium, new home to the Raiders football team.
As an experienced attendee at live events, this seemed like a disaster in the making.Even the freeway signs for the two days flashed plan your route because so many people were going to be moving about in such a small area, in addition to everything else which was taking place in a sold out Las Vegas. But, Las Vegas has one job, and thats keeping the people who frequent the strip area happy.Garth started at 7pm, Bruno started at 9 pm, and UFC was called for as early as 3:15pm with the early preliminary fights, then the preliminary fights set for 6:15pm prior to the main event which was to take place at 8pm.
I was then staying South of the main Strip area, with dinner reservations at a favorite sushi restaurant northwest of the Strip.I planned to take an eastern route avoiding the central section of the 15 freeway which ran alongside the core section of Strip casinos. As I left, I turned on Waze to see how it directed me to go.Unbelievably, at 7pm Waze directed me to travel the 15 freeway directly through the heart of the triangle of events, and it was right.Traffic flowed at normal speeds even as we saw lines of cars to the west of the freeway navigating the police presence to enter the Garth concert and traffic to the east of the freeway heading toward UFC and Bruno.
Those who planned traffic management did their job well.By staggering start times for the various major events, the city was able to absorb the movement of people in ways I rarely see.Typically, it only takes one major stadium event to lock up traffic in all directions.Las Vegas has to move people quickly, because time lost in the casinos is money lost.
The diversity of entertainment in the city has always been astonishing. This weekend it was amplified by the ways in which the various entertainers celebrated the return of full scale events.Justin Beiber played a show on Friday night at the Wynn hotels Encore theater. On Saturday he did a 10 song surprise drop-in at the Wynns new Delilah supper club. The night before Dave Chappelle did a drop-by comedy set at Delilah along with his performance to a full house at the MGM Grand Arena.
Hotels were sold out and the city was full. The city was teeming with visitors ready for fun. They didnt mind the hour long taxi lines. They didnt complain about the prices. You were hard pressed to get a dinner reservation anywhere. The laws of statistical probability continued to operate at all the gaming tables.Yet, everyone seemed to be elated to be out and ready for adventure. The world had reopened and everybody wanted to avoid that Dave Attell momentary realization of you shoulda been there.Barring a resurgence of Covid, this year is going to be spectacularly fun.

‘Freedom Day’ Virus Surge Mars UK ‘Freedom Day’ DTN The Progressive Farmer – DTN The Progressive Farmer

Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who has dialed down talk of freedom in recent weeks, urged the public to exercise "prudence and respect for other people and the risks that the disease continues to present."
In a reminder of how volatile the situation is, the prime minister was spending "Freedom Day" in quarantine. Johnson and Treasury chief Rishi Sunak are both self-isolating for 10 days after contact with Health Secretary Sajid Javid, who tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday.
Johnson initially said he would take daily tests instead of self-isolating -- an option not offered to most people -- but U-turned amid widespread public outrage.
The prime minister is among hundreds of thousands of Britons who have been told to quarantine because they have been near someone who tested positive. The situation is causing staff shortages for businesses including restaurants, car manufacturers and public transport.
Globally, the World Health Organization says cases and deaths are climbing after a period of decline, spurred by the delta variant. Like the U.K., Israel and the Netherlands both opened up widely after vaccinating most of their people, but had to reimpose some restrictions after new infection surges. The Dutch prime minister admitted that lifting restrictions too early "was a mistake."
In the U.S., many areas abandoned face coverings when the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said fully vaccinated people didn't need to wear them in most settings. Some states and cities are now trying to decide what to do as cases rise again.
British officials have repeatedly expressed confidence that the U.K.'s country's vaccine rollout -- 68.3% of adults, or just over half of the total population, has received two doses -- will keep the threat to public health at bay. But leading international scientists described England's "Freedom Day" as a threat to the whole world, and 1,200 scientists backed a letter to British medical journal The Lancet that criticized the Conservative government's decision.
"I can't think of any realistic good scenario to come out of this strategy, I'm afraid," said Julian Tang, a clinical virologist at the University of Leicester. "I think it's really a degree of how bad it's going to be."
Tang said nightclubs in particular are potent spreading grounds, because they increase close physical contact among a core customer base -- people 18 to 25 -- that has not yet been fully vaccinated.
"That's the perfect mixing vessel for the virus to spread and to even generate new variants," he said.
The government wants nightclubs and other crowded venues to check whether customers have been vaccinated, have a negative test result or have recovered from the disease.
There is no legal requirement for them to do so, however, and most say they won't. Michael Kill, chief executive of the Night Time Industries Association, said many owners see the passes as a huge turn-off for customers and accuse the government of "passing the buck" to businesses.
"Either mandate it or don't mandate it," Kill said. "This is putting an inordinate amount of pressure on us."
Johnson's decision to scrap the legal requirement for face masks in indoor public spaces -- while recommending people keep them on -- has also sowed confusion.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has said they will remain mandatory on the capital's subways and buses, and some retailers said they would encourage customers to keep their masks on. But many believe implementing such policies will be tricky without the backing of the law.
Psychologist Robert West, who sits on a science panel that advises the government, said telling people to be careful without giving them thorough knowledge of risks was "like putting someone out on the road without having taught them to drive."
The end of restrictions in England is a critical moment in Britain's handling of the pandemic, which has killed more than 128,000 people nationwide, the highest death toll in Europe after Russia. Other parts of the U.K. -- Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland -- are taking slightly more cautious steps out of lockdown and keeping mask requirements for now.
At the Egg nightclub in London, clubber Alex Clark acknowledged feeling "a bit of apprehension and uncertainty."
Fellow clubgoer Kevin Ally felt no such qualms.
"There's zero concern," he said. "The only concern is why we haven't been here for a year and a half. It's been a very long time since we've been out.
"It's good to be back, and we're here to dance."

Proud Boys withdraw from sponsoring dance in Scotland, SD – Associated Press
Posted: at 12:42 am
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) A fraternity of the far-right extremist group Proud Boys has withdrawn its sponsorship of a street dance in the small town of Scotland in September.
David Finnell applied on behalf of the group to have the street dance from noon until midnight Sept. 18 in the Bon Homme County community of about 700 people. The City Council approved the request to close a section of the city street as required for alcohol consumption and food vendors.
Finnell, in a Facebook message to KELO-TV Monday, said that the Proud Boys were dropping sponsorship of the event out of concerns for safety. He did not elaborate.
The Southern Poverty Law Center identifies the Proud Boys as a hate group citing the groups views about women, Muslims and others, as well as appearing with other extremist groups.
Scotlands city attorney Kent Lehr said while the Proud Boys have gained some negative national attention, there have not been any problems locally. Its his understanding that several local or area residents are associated with the Proud Boys, Lehr said.
Im not saying the city is condoning or agreeing with what the group says, Lehr said. The council had to evaluate the street dance request from the Proud Boys as it evaluates any other request, he said.
It has to consider the benefit to the community, any potential disruption (to closing street and caused by the event), the benefit to businesses on Main Street, Lehr said.
Finnell said the Proud Boys planned to raise money for local non-profits before deciding on Monday to withdraw from the event.

Proud Boys representative says group plans to withdraw sponsorship of September event in Scotland, South Dakota – KELOLAND.com
Posted: at 12:42 am
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) The person who applied on behalf of the fraternity of Proud Boys to have a street dance in Scotland on September 18 told KELOLAND News on Monday that because of safety concerns for the Proud Boys and public, the group would no longer sponsor the event but would try to find a local sponsor.
David Finnell confirmed in a Facebook message that he is the man who asked the Scotland City Council for permission to have a street dance from noon until midnight on Sept. 18. The council approved the request to close a section of a city street with requirements for alcohol and food venders.
Proud Boys is a controversial group that has made the news frequently in the past several months including for its apparent ties to the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.
The council minutes from the July 12 meeting list David Finnells name and said he was making the request on behalf of the fraternity of Proud Boys.
KELOLAND News reached out to Finnell on Facebook for an interview about the request. He eventually declined and said Proud Boys would not sponsor the event.
The councils action to close a section of Main Street for the Sept. 18 event was similar to three other actions taken that night. Sections of Main Street will be closed for a Youth Center Corn Hole Tournament on August 13 and for two events on Aug. 14 in connection to the Scottie Stampede Rodeo celebration.
The request for the Sept. 18 is different because its associated with a national and international organization the FBI said has ties to the Jan. 6 events in Washington, D.C.
In the first presidential debate in September 2020, when asked if he would condemn white supremist groups, President Donald Trump replied that Proud Boys should,Stand back and stand by. Two days later, Trump condemned the Proud Boys.
The Government of Canada placed the Proud Boys on its list of terrorist entities and ideologically motivated violent extremist groups on February 3.
The Southern Poverty Law Center identifies the Proud Boys as a hate group and cites the groups views about women, Muslims and others as well as appearing with other extreme groups such as Neo-Nazis.
It has to consider the benefit to the community, any potential disruption (to closing street and caused by the event), the benefit to businesses on Main Street., Lehr said.
Lehr and city finance officer Tanya Bult said the Proud Boys representative indicated the group wanted to raise money for the community with its Sept. 18 event. Finnell confirmed in a Facebook message the Proud Boys planned to raise money for local non-profits before deciding on Monday to withdraw from the event.
Bon Homme County Sheriff Mark Maggs said the involvement of the Proud Boys in a public event does create an element of concern. Overall, the sheriffs office would treat the originally planned Sept. 18 event like it does the Scotties Stampede in the city or Czech Days in Tabor. The sheriffs office would provide security and increase the number of people working that day, Maggs said.
The July 12 council minutes said the Sept. 18 event was to have eight bands.
Lehr said if the event would have had adverse consequences such as assaults or damage to property its not going to happen again, Lehr said.
Bult said the council would have needed to review any licenses from vendors selling malt beverages or food on the street on Sept. 18. Those vendors would have brought their licenses to the Aug. 9 council meeting, Bult said.
The public has not raised any questions or concerns with her at the city office about the originally planned Sept. 18 event, Bult said.
Scotland Mayor Curt Hofer did not return messages left by KELOLAND News. Attempts to reach other city council members were not successful.

This Texas Democrat Doesn’t Want Proud Boys Standing Over His Grandmother as She Votes – The Nation
Posted: at 12:42 am
Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer meets with Texas House Democrats at the U.S. Capitol. More than 60 Texas House Democrats left the state overnight for Washington, D.C., in order to block a voting restrictions bill. (Win McNamee / Getty Images)
Thank you for signing up forThe Nations weekly newsletter.
Democratic Texas Representative James Talarico didnt come to Washington, D.C., to embarrass Foxs Pete Hegsuth, but thats what he did last week. The youngest member of the Texas delegation, now 32, Talarico violated a lot of Democrats precepts, including my own (Im a Never Foxer), to mix it up with the lightweight Trump-backing Fox prime-time host. He took him down.
You have made a lot of money personally and youve enriched a lot of corporations with advertising by getting on here and spewing lies and conspiracy theories to folks who trust you, Talarico told Hegseth. He challenged him: Tell your voters right now that Donald Trump lost the election. Hegseth sputtered; Talarico went viral.
Since then, hes been on MSNBC with Joy Reid and Jonathan Capehart and joined CNNs Jim Acosta; Im sure Im missing someone. Monday night the whole Texas delegation is doing an MSNBC voting rights town hall. Meanwhile, hes been meeting with congressional leaders and voting rights icons to try to push congressional Democrats to work harder to pass a voting rights bill that will make the rollback planned by the Texas GOP impossible.
Its hard work, whether in his diverse House District 52, the Austin Capitol, or Washington, D.C., where Democrats nominally run all three branches but President Joe Manchinoops, I mean West Virginia Senator Joe Manchinseems to have the last word on whats possible. In an interview, Talarico confirmed that Senate leaders told the Texas Democrats that the two pending infrastructure bills are their priority, but said their D.C. visit had raised the pressure to make sure some kind of voting rights legislation passes before the Senate goes into recess on August 6.
I appreciate Talaricos optimism, but retain my pessimism that any kind of voting rights legislation can follow closely on the heels of whatever infrastructure bill passesif any. If Talarico and Co. succeed in staying out of Texas through the special session, Governor Greg Abbott is promising to call another one ASAP. This is an uphill climb.
But I dont know uphill as intimately as Texas Democrats do. So if Talaricos at least somewhat optimistic, Im going to try to get there, too.

Can you help our readers understand which aspects of the Texas bill will hit your constituents particularly hard?
Thats a tough question, because there are so many harmful provisions. One is the reduction of early voting hours. My district has a lot of working folks who cant take off in the middle of the day to go vote so they need extended hours. I have a lot of senior citizens in my district, and this bill will make the provision of mail-in ballots harder. I have a lot of my own family members in my district, this is where I was born and raised, and this bill would empower partisan poll watchers like the Proud Boys to stand over my grandmothers shoulder while she is trying to cast her ballot. Thats why this is not only political, but its very personal.
Were Democrats able to add amendments to soften the impact?
Well, the discussion is a little confusing because there have been different versions of this bill. As you know, we are in special session right now; we had regular session in the spring. The same basic voter suppression bill has had many forms. In the regular session, the Texas House Democrats watered down the bill to some extent, though it was still very harmful. But in the Senate, led by Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, his version was even more extreme: It eliminated Souls to the Polls, where mostly African American congregants go vote after church on Sundaythen it shortened the hours, and pushed them back to 1 pm, which is after people usually go vote. It also had a frightening provision that would have made it easier to overturn electionsand that was the bill we were able to defeat in the regular session with the walkout.
Readers like you make our independent journalism possible.
Now the bill is somewhere in between the watered-down version and that real extreme version, but it still has so many classic voter suppression methods. If you dig into the meat of this bill as I have, some of the hidden provisions make it really hard for voters who dont speak English to access an assistor. I used to teach in San Antonio, and a lot of times our parents would have their children go with them to vote, so they could read them the ballot or help explain
You dont have ballots in Spanish in Texas?
No, we do, but sometimes voters either cant read or need a little more help. Youd bring your son or your daughter, or another assistor, to help you through the process. Weve historically done that in Texas with no problem.
I know your delegation has been splitting up to meet with individual senators, although you all met with Vice President Kamala Harris. Whove you gotten to meet with?
Yes, I was in the meeting with the vice president. I was also in the meeting with Senator Elizabeth Warren. Others have met with Senators Cory Booker, Kirsten Gillibrand, majority leader Schumer, and of course Senator Manchin.
Has any member of your delegation met with President Biden yet?
Not yet. We have requested that meeting, and I hope well be able to meet with the president in some way while were here. But we have not gotten word thats been scheduled.
You didnt get to meet with Senator Manchin personally
No, that was mostly our leadership and senior members of our delegationand as you know Im the baby of the bunch
Get unlimited access: $9.50 for six months.
They had to keep you out!
Yes! But one of my colleagues, Representative Senfronia Thompson, who is the longest-serving woman and African American in Texas historyshes an iconshe met with Senator Manchin, and she shared how her parents in Houston had to save up money to pay the poll tax. An incredibly powerful story, to hear how previous generations struggled so mightily to access the franchise.
Yet he still says he wont support a so-called carve-out of the 60-vote rule to pass a voting rights bill. What do you think is going on therewhat did you hear from your colleagues?
Our colleagues walked away from the meeting feeling optimistic about what would be possible with Senator Manchin. Hes obviously a big supporter of voting rights. H was a secretary of state and he wants to be a leader on the issue, which is a great place to start fromwe cant say that for every senator, especially not on the Republican side of the aisle. Hes also, obviously, been very committed to the filibuster, which I disagree with. Its a Jim Crow relic that needs to be done away with if were going to let our democracy function. But it seems that there may be an opportunity to pass some core voting rights provisionssomething like the John Lewis Voting Rights Actwhich Senator Manchin believes could get significant Republican support. Now, whether or not thats true is something thats above my pay grade. But we in Texas are desperate for anything that could prevent this bill from becoming law in Texas.
Manchin did float a compromise voting rights proposal that was pretty good, even endorsed by Stacey Abrams, which McConnell trashed as the Stacey Abrams compromise, and you know what that means. But infrastructure seems like everybodys priority right now. What are you hearing?
What we were told at the meetingsthe Senator Manchin meeting and the Senator Schumer meetingis that they want to get past infrastructure before they go to voting rights. But they also said our presence here has put a lot of pressure on them to get to voting rights as quickly as possible. Which was our goal. We also wanted to galvanize the national media to be talking about voting rights and to be putting that pressure on leaders of Congress and on the president and the vice president. Im not a senator, but from what Ive been told, the Senate needs pressure and the Senate needs a deadline. And thankfully we have both of those things now because the Senates August recess is coming up, August 6 I believe, which is also when our special session ends in Texas.
The last thing Ill mention is that week is also the anniversary of another Texan, President Lyndon Baines Johnson, signing the Voting Rights Act
Also on August 6.
Seems like the universe is trying to tell us something about what needs to happen at the beginning of August
Lets hope we listen.

KERNERSVILLE, N.C. (WGHP) A Kernersville man arrested for his involvement in the January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol building will appear in court.
Charles Donohoe will have a status conference Thursday at 2 p.m.
Donohoe, a Marine veteran, is charged with helping plan the attack on the Capitol.
Prosecutors have released videos they said show Donohoe, along with hundreds of others, pushing their way up the stairs of the Capitol and past the police.
Whats happening today? Get your daily news wrap-up with the FOX8 newsletter.
In the same video, you see New York Proud Boys member Dominic Pezzola carrying a police riot shield up the stairs.
Did you steal a riot shield? a man asks in another video released by prosecutors.
In that video, investigators said Donohoe and Pezzola are shown carrying the riot shield through the crowd, just minutes after they stole it from a Capitol Police Officer.
At 2:11 p.m. that afternoon, investigators said Pezzola used the shield to smash open the windows of the capitol and allowed a flood of rioters through the opening and into the Capitol building.
NEXT: Kernersville Proud Boy remains in federal custody
Lawyers for Donohoe said the feds havent provided ample evidence that Donohoe helped plan the attack.
They also argue theres no evidence that Donohoe ever even entered the building.
Prosecutors have argued that Donohoe, who is allegedly a high-ranking Lieutenant in the Proud Boys, could incite more violence in the future.

Pezzola’s attorneys argue Proud Boy should have access to laptop and be released pending trial – Democrat & Chronicle

First person sentenced in Capitol riot, no jail time
Anna Morgan-Lloyd is the first defendant to be sentenced in the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. She pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor and admitted to unlawfully entering the Capitol and will serve 3 years of probation, do 120 hours of community service and pay $500 in restitution.
Newsy, Newsy
Lawyers representing accused Capitol rioter Dominic Pezzola argue he should be freed from custody pending his trial because his constitutional rights are being violated and because he presents no flight risk.
AttorneysSteven Metcalf and Martin Tankleff filed a 230-page motion for bail to see Pezzola, 43, of Rochester let out on conditional release pending trial.
Pezzola, who has now been jailed for five months in a Washington, D.C., jail,is accusedwith assaulting a United States Capitol Police officer during the Jan. 6 riots andallegedly ripping away the officer's riot shield, which he then used to break open a Capitol window. That gavepeople unfettered access to the interior of the building, according to court documents.
He is charged with two counts of conspiracy to defraud the United States; two counts ofassaulting, resisting, or impeding a Capitol Police officer, and other charges. Pezzola pleaded not guilty in early May to an 11-count superseding indictment.
In a release, Pezzola's daughters, ages 16 and 20, said they miss their father and want him to come home, because "he is the rock of our family. When we see people charged with worse crimes than our father, we cant help but think of how our father remains incarcerated.
Pezzola's common-law wife Lisa Magee said her husband "participated in a social justice movement, just like so many other people have over the past two years. However, my husband is being treated differently because he was arrested in connection with incidents that happened on January 6, 2021.
USA Today reports that at least535people have been arrested in connection with the breach of the Capitol. Pezzola is charged under the same indictment with fellow Proud Boys Matthew Greene, of Syracuse, and William Pepe, of Beacon, Dutchess County.
Like Pezzola, Greene is being detained without bail, while Pepe is free on his own recognizance.
Pezzola's attorneys Tankleff and Metcalf said in a release The continued detention of Dominic is discriminatory and deprives him of his constitutional rights.
"Dominics human rights are being denied daily. Dominic is also being denied his right to aid in his own defense.
Metcalf and Tankleff outline three major arguments forPezzola's pre-trial release:
Prosecutors allege Pezzola and others conspired, planned and then participated in an effort to interfere with Congress counting the Electoral College votes to certify President Joe Biden's victory. The Proud Boys, a white supremacist extremist organizationlabeled as a hate group, used social media, text messaging, and encrypted applications to recruit and organize their efforts.
Assistant United States Attorney Erik Kenerson wrote in a February filing that Pezzola committed a crime of terrorism.
"Felony destruction of property ...is a federal crime of terrorism," Kenerson wrote. He said the law defines a "'federal crime of terrorismas an offense that 'is calculated to influence or affect the conduct of government by intimidation or coercion, or to retaliate against government conduct.'"

If a federal judge denies the motion to release Pezzola, his attorneys ask that he be released to the custody of a third party (most likely his wife) and placed into a pretrial services agency monitoring program that could include electronic monitoring, work release, and curfew.
A Des Moinesman, Douglas Jensen, 41, a QAnon adherent who was videotaped at the Capitol breach was freed by a federal judge Tuesday into house arrest and electronic monitoring, the Associated Press reported. Jensen was not accused of toppling any barricades, damaging any property or fighting with anybody at the Capitol, the judge said.

Words matter. Liberals agree. Conservatives agree. Churchill observed short words are better than long ones, old words better than new ones with old, short words best of all. "Blood, sweat and tears"? In American politics Republicans have proven far more adept than Democrats in their use of words. Much of the credit goes to political consultant Frank Luntz, the man who employed focus groups to craft "death tax" as a replacement for inheritance tax. His verbal successes are too numerous to recount.
George Lakoff has attempted to provide a counterbalance on the left, but he lacks the killer phrasing captured by political correctness and cancel culture. Colorado has witnessed its own history of vocabulary wars. Forty years ago, Gov. Dick Lamm launched his Human Settlements Policy. If that appellation strikes you as slightly Orwellian, you arent the first to think so. Legislative Republicans threw a conniption fit over the notion that state government might attempt to rein in Front Range growth.
Perhaps the most perceptive jest was that of the "last man syndrome." Once across the border to Colorful Colorado, these incoming immigrants would squeal, Throw up the gates, we dont need more pressure on our roads, schools and infrastructure! The goal of the Human Settlements Policy was to distribute growth throughout the state, reducing fiscal pressure on existing communities. Lamm was, of course, the man who killed the 1976 Olympics at the ballot box and promised to drive a stake through the heart of C-470. His successor, Roy Romer, would recast Lamms environmental concerns as "Smart Growth." Who opposes smart growth? Words matter.
But, before this occurred, the House Republican caucus energized by the self-anointed "House Crazies" established an interim study committee to determine precisely what the Governors Human Settlements staff was attempting. Their investigative panel was chaired by Anne Gorsuch, whose son Neil now serves on the U. S. Supreme Court. At the time, Anne was perceived as just the whip smart ringmaster required to turn these hearings into a circus. I was appointed as a Democratic foil. Anne, a staff attorney at Mountain Bell, gave Joe McCarthy a run for his money as an assailant. You would have thought state employees who were laboring to assure adequate water, roads and schools were plotting a Marxist takeover of Colorado.
Early in the process, Gorsuch requested testimony from mid-level bureaucrats in the state Department of Local Affairs. The thrust of her interrogations was: how much of your time is devoted to Human Settlements work, what are your work products, who receives your reports and what is their value? You catch the drift. One afternoon a young woman with just a few years of service began to crumble beneath this badgering. Finally, she asked, why is this important its just part of my job. Anne retorted by threatening her, We need to know how much we should slash your budget how much to shrink your staff.
I had watched enough of Annes bullying and interrupted, challenging the chair, I refuse to continue attending these hearings if they are going to be conducted as a witch hunt. Bingo! The following days headline was something like, "Democrat accuses Gorsuch probe of a witch hunt." The tenor of succeeding meetings changed dramatically. The discussion was no longer whether Marxists were burrowing their way into state government, but what were Colorados civil servants actually doing and why? Words mattered. Our previous president hasnt had as much luck with "witch hunt" as I did, but I suspect this is primarily a matter of overuse. It works better when the accused witches are third parties. I was also an employee of Mountain Bell, which prompted Gorsuch to suggest I be fired. This brings us to Critical Race Theory (CRT), the latest words alleged to matter.
I must confess I didnt have the slightest idea what CRT was when it suddenly received media attention. Are these theorists critical of systemic racism (apparently true) or do they view racism as a critical issue (also true)? And why has a half century of arcane academic debate alarmed conservatives? Previously confined to law school articles, why has CRT emerged as a threat to social peace even though it isnt actually taught in our public schools. Its always wise to be suspicious of newly uncovered, yet previously unnoticed threats. This is usually "bloody shirt" politics.
White Americans have many other things to feel embarrassed about, in addition to their ugly treatment of Black Americans. Take a closer look at the genocidal treatment of Native Americans. When Lt. Silas Soule, then Denvers town Marshall, testified before Congress to the horror of the Sand Creek Massacre, he was assassinated upon his return. Recognizing Lt. Soule for his courage is a history Colorado should teach, whatever it is called. Truth matters. Words matter.
Miller Hudson is a public affairs consultant and a former Colorado legislator.

Boris Johnson Finds Himself in a Quandary Over Racism and Soccer – The New York Times
Posted: at 12:41 am
LONDON Prime Minister Boris Johnson of Britain has labored to distance himself from Donald J. Trump since the change of power in Washington, and not without success. His first face-to-face meeting with President Biden last month went smoothly: The two found common ground on climate change and Mr. Johnson labeled Mr. Trumps successor a big breath of fresh air.
But now Mr. Johnson finds himself back in crosswinds of the kind Mr. Trump used to stir up. His refusal to condemn crowds who booed Englands national soccer team for kneeling to protest racial injustice carries a distinct echo of Mr. Trumps targeting of N.F.L. players who knelt for the same cause in the United States.
One of his cabinet ministers criticized the players for engaging in gesture politics, while his spokesman said of the jeering spectators that the prime minister fully respects the right of those who choose to peacefully protest and make their feelings known.
In Mr. Johnsons case, it was less what he said than what he failed to say. But in England, as in the United States, the mix of sports, politics and racial justice has proved volatile, boomeranging on a prime minister whose populist instincts on cultural issues have often served him well.
Englands inspiring run in the European soccer championship captivated the nation. When three of its Black players were subjected to racist abuse after their crushing loss last weekend in the final, it put Mr. Johnsons silence, and the gibes of other Conservative politicians, under a harsh spotlight. Suddenly, they were on the wrong side of a team that symbolized Englands racial diversity.
This was the Trump playbook, and it worked for Trump until George Floyd, said Frank Luntz, an American pollster, referring to the killing of an unarmed man by the police last year in Minneapolis. That crime ignited enormous protests against racism and police violence, overwhelming Mr. Trumps campaign to fire football players who refused to stand during the national anthem.
Mr. Luntz, who has advised many Republican candidates, is now working with the Center for Policy Studies, a London research institute with historic ties to the Conservative Party, to survey voter attitudes in Britain. A classmate of Mr. Johnsons at Oxford University, Mr. Luntz rejects the comparisons of the prime minister to Mr. Trump. (The better analog, he says, is Ronald Reagan.)
But Mr. Luntz said there were other alarming parallels between Britain and the United States. The deep polarization of voters, he said, has led to an exploitation of some issues whether the populist appeals of Mr. Johnsons Conservatives or the political correctness of the left that threaten to corrode British politics as badly as they have American politics.
Weve crossed the Rubicon in the United States, he said. Theyre getting perilously close to crossing it here.
While Mr. Trump eventually dropped the N.F.L. campaign, Mr. Johnson is in full-fledged retreat. Under questioning by the Labour Party leader, Keir Starmer, this week in Parliament, a rattled prime minister insisted he wholeheartedly supported the England team. I support them in the way they show support with their friends who face racism, Mr. Johnson added.
That did not mollify Mr. Starmer, who declared: The government has been trying to stoke a culture war, and they have realized they are on the wrong side. And now they hope that nobody has noticed.
The bigger threat to Mr. Johnson comes not from politicians but the players, some of whom have struck back at the eruption of racist gibes on social media after the team lost to Italy in a penalty shootout. Bukayo Saka, one of three young Black players who missed their kicks, posted on Twitter that there is no place for racism or hate of any kind in football or in any area of society.
Tyrone Mings, a defender who is Black, drew a direct link between the abuse and the government, tweeting, You dont get to stoke the fire at the beginning of the tournament by labelling our anti-racism message as Gesture Politics & then pretend to be disgusted when the very thing were campaigning against, happens.
His reference was to Mr. Johnsons home secretary, Priti Patel, who said the teams practice of kneeling was gesture politics and refused to condemn fans for jeering it. Lee Anderson, a Conservative member of Parliament who was elected in 2019 in a surge of pro-Brexit support for Mr. Johnsons party, vowed not to watch England games as long as the players knelt.
Ms. Patel, who is one of the most hard-line cabinet ministers on immigration issues, played a supporting role in this drama not unlike that of Vice President Mike Pence in Mr. Trumps N.F.L. crusade. In October 2017, under orders from the president, Mr. Pence conspicuously walked out of a game in Indianapolis.
Mr. Johnson has been more subtle than was Mr. Trump, who once described a protesting player as a son of a bitch. The prime minister never openly criticized the team, leaving it to a spokesman to respond to questions about booing fans.
There are several reasons for Mr. Johnson to tread carefully. Englands team represents the nation, not the interests of wealthy private owners, like a typical N.F.L. franchise. Englands players sing God Save the Queen and kneel for only a few moments before kickoff. That makes them less vulnerable to charges of being unpatriotic than players sitting out the The Star-Spangled Banner.
Most important, under its manager, Gareth Southgate, the England team has found rare success on and off the field. It reached the first final of a major tournament in 55 years, vanquishing Germany and Denmark. And its players have used their fame effectively in pursuit of social justice completing a decades-long transformation in the teams image from the days in which some viewed it uncomfortably, as symbolizing a strain of English nationalism linked to the right.
Another of its Black players, Marcus Rashford, led a campaign that forced Mr. Johnson to reverse plans to end a free-lunch program for poor families during the pandemic. After Mr. Rashford also missed his penalty kick in the final, vandals defaced a mural of him in his native Manchester with racist graffiti. Within hours, the slurs had been covered with hearts, letters and English flags.
Mr. Southgate, in an eloquent Dear England letter, steadfastly supported his players rights to get involved in political issues. He said it was natural they would have different views of being English than people of his generation a distinct contrast to the messages that were delivered by the N.F.L. and its owners. The leagues commissioner, Roger Goodell, first required players to stand for the anthem before reversing himself amid the Black Lives Matter protests.
All of this left Mr. Johnson wrong-footed. Only a few months ago, he stridently opposed plans to form an elite European superleague, presenting himself as a champion of soccers working-class fans. Now, though, Mr. Johnsons gestures wearing an England Three Lions jersey or flying an English flag outside 10 Downing Street struck many as belated and inauthentic.
Its confused the Tories; they dont know how to run with this, said John M. Williams, a sports sociologist at the University of Leicester. They have their own right-wing constituency, so they feel they have to go after the taking of the knee. But theyre afraid that the England team is doing politics better than they are.
As in the United States, Mr. Williams said, social issues in Britain are part of a deeper debate between a liberal, inclusive, multiracial society and its opposite. Weirdly, he said, the England national team is at the heart of this debate.
