Solitaires enters the ‘Dreamfeed’ on second album – Columbus Alive
Posted: June 28, 2021 at 9:51 pm
In the earliest stage of life, an infants appetite can seem insatiable, especially when thebaby cries out for food every two hours in the middle of the night. Over time, groggy, fatigued parents look for ways to prolong the time between nighttime feedings. One strategy is to feed infants from a bottle while trying not to wake them, whichnourishes the baby while alsotrainingthem to sleep longer without interruption. Its known as the dreamfeed.
When Nate Gelinas began working on his second solo album as Solitaires, he and his wife were in the early throes of parenting twin boys, and that idea of a dreamfeed seemed to characterize much of his existence, so much so that the term became the title track of his sophomore record, which Gelinas released last month.
More: Staff Pick: Old Hundred spin-off Solitaires no longer going it alone
When you're living with kids, a lot of times I feel like I'm living in some dream or a trance state, said Gelinas, who also drew parallels to the social media feeds and news feeds in which he and everyone else seemed to be swimming. In the title track, Gelinas describes a hazy, idyllic summer day at the river near the Park of Roses, but he still cant escape the digital world. We put our days into the feed/They fade into the screen/Will they mean a little more if we share them with our friends? he sings.
Unlike the folk-indebted songs on 2016 album Southcoast, which Gelinas described as vehicles for the lyrics, Dreamfeeds tracks began sonically with a desire to avoid predictable chord progressions. I wanted the music this time to have more sharp turns ... [so] you didn't know where it was going to go, said Gelinas, who supplanted acoustic guitars with the big, electric guitar sounds employed by90s bands of his youth like Smashing Pumpkins and Weezer. He also recruited friend and former Old Hundred bandmate Jon Helm, who contributed guitar and helped Gelinas record in fits and starts over the past five years.
Gelinas took a different lyrical approach, as well. The first album was really a backlog of ruminations and thoughts about my life, my childhood, and just trying to make sense of 30 years, he said. For Dreamfeed, Gelinas zoomed in tighter, focusing on the mundanities of everyday life. On Pale Horse, a section of the first verse reads like a weekend checklist: Clean the bathroom, clean the basement/Check the chimney, then forget it/Is the water coming in again? Is the water coming in again?
Its the anxiety of that, worrying about, What if there's a storm? And what if the water comesin? And what if the tree falls on the bedroom? ... I've never heard somebody write a hard-rocking song about anxiety over water getting into the roof, but I feel like that's valid, he said. There's a lot of meaning that comes with all those mundane things, and a lot of fear. My wife and I often talk about that. We were both pretty anxious people, but not to the degree of when you have kids. The anxieties just go into overdrive: What kind of world are they living in? What is it going to be like? Are they OK? But then you have the day to day, and its just taking care of the basics.
Along with an awareness of the fragility of life amid the busy-ness of life, Gelinas also wrestles with his new identity as a dad on Dreamfeed. Sometimes I forget that Im more than a father, he sings on the title track. Then,on Staycation, Gelinas describes the split personalities that often come along with parenting: The kids will soon be home/And well turn back to the people that they know.
I don't know if anyone's ever ready to have kids. We weren't ready, and we didn't think we'd have twins, either. I felt like I lost connection with my normal identity … and it ran the risk of just erasing other parts of me, especially the first year or two. If Im honest, it wasnt until year four that I started to truly be more at peace with how much fatherhood has dominated and redefined me, Gelinas said. There was a tension with the identity of being a private, quieter person who likes a lot of time to read and write and make music. It was hard to still be that and be a dad. … But it's been good. I've grown into a different kind of self.
That sense of peace amid the struggle comes through on the title track. Even as Gelinas strains to remember the other parts of himself, he acknowledges the blissful moments and accepts the changes parenthood brings. I guess I wouldnt have it any other way, he sings.

Spookware takes classic horror movie tropes and turns them into wild, weird minigames – PC Gamer
Posted: at 9:51 pm
A masked axe murderer approaches your car, but it won't start. You frantically turn the key in the ignition, until the engine finally sputters to life and you make your escape with seconds to spare. You're jamming shells into a shotgun as a shambling zombie approaches, and you manage to load it and pull the trigger moments before your brain gets eaten. Your flashlight's batteries die suddenly in a dark and dangerous place, and you furiously whack it with your hand until the light flickers back on and you breathe a sigh of relief.
These are just a few of the classic horror movie cliches Spookware, a WarioWare-inspired collection of bizarre microgames, riffs on to hilarious, addictive effect. If you've never played WarioWare, it's a rapid-fire parade of tiny, surreal interactive vignettes you play against a strict time limit. And Spookware, which you can download for free right now on Itch (or name your own price if you're feeling generous), captures the breakneck pace and absurd humour of those games perfectlybut with a keenly observed horror twist.
You control Spookware with the arrow keys. In one microgame, a hand moves rapidly back and forth above a telephone, and you have to hit the down key when you're directly above it to call for help. In another, a ghoul crawls through a doorway and you have to repeatedly hit each key in a clockwise pattern to turn a valve and bring a shutter slamming down on it. At first, the fast pace is kinda relentless. But you soon adjust to the game's peculiar rhythm and enter a wide-eyed, trance-like state as you furiously tap the keys against the clock.
The presentation is superb too. It has a scrappy, hand-made, almost zine-like feel, with a touch of Terry Gilliam's Monty Python animations. This, combined with some delightfully lo-fi music and weird pitched-down voice samples, gives the game a compellingly chaotic energy. I really had to force myself to stop playing to come and write this. It's also clear the people who made it have a real passion for horror films. It's a tongue-in-cheek satire of the genre in some ways, but also a joyous celebration of what makes it great.
There are 10 microgames in this version of the game, so you will eventually wear them out. But I was overjoyed to discover that an expanded, fleshed out, paid-for version of the game is being released later this year, sometime in the fall. The Steam page is promising "hundreds of hand-crafted, fast-paced microgames", which is spooky music to my ears. And there appears to be a story too, about three skeletons going on a scary road trip, which should tie those microgames together nicely. I can't wait to play this.

COVERSTORY
Hina thought that the scene of her engagement was like a dolls tea party. Her mother took Hina out of her dollhouse, dressed her up in pretty clothes, and stuck her at the place of importance on one of the bigger sofas in their living room. It hardly resembled the living room she was used to seeing on a day-to-day basis, as it was decorated, lit up and filled with people. Amani and Gohar, who had dealt with her pre-event jitters from the beginning, had finished the process of bringing her safely from her room into the living room, and were now seated around her, talking excitedly.
Sometimes Gohar would pull on Hinas hand, and she would feel it as if it were from far away, and she would resurface from her trance long enough to hear the end of Gohars sentence. Amani was obsessed with taking selfies, and would tap Hinas shoulder every few minutes to take another one. The old feeling that she was supposed to be happier about her engagement beyond the thrill of wearing expensive clothes and jewellery came back. Another thought came sliding right on top of it. If this was dolls play, then where was her groom doll? Was she going to be a singular bride doll sitting on this sofa all evening? She twitched irritably.
Amani immediately pounced. Dont do that, youll spoil your makeup, she said. She took out her compact and patted the corners of Hinas mouth with a powder puff.
The lights made Hina feel hot. The number of people buzzing around made her head swim. She turned to catch the end of Gohars sentence yet another time.
Its like watching a movie of your life in front of your eyes, isnt it? Gohar had asked, but Hina, hearing only the isnt it?, merely nodded. It so happened that Hina had been thinking the very same thing, imagining herself to be the only member of an audience watching the scene before her on a cinema screen. She shook herself, but it didnt snap her out of it.
Someone slid into the empty sofa space next to her. It was strange, seeing someone pop out of the imaginary movie screen and appear next to her as if it were the most natural thing in the world. Hina squirmed in her seat. Who was this person? Another female doll? Why were there so many female dolls in this dollhouse?
The person patted Hinas shoulder firmly. Hina came back to reality and looked into the womans face.
My girl, my darling girl, you look radiant, said the woman. Now, here, show me your hand. She took Hinas left hand and slipped a sparkling item onto Hinas ring finger. This made Hina freeze. Why was this doll giving her the ring? That was all she could think about as the room erupted in applause and jokes, smiles and laughter. She felt two pairs of hands clench her body, one around her shoulders, and the other her arms. One felt like Rays, and the other felt like Ammis. It was the only solid land for her to hold onto in the middle of a buzz of congratulations and tears.
Dear, dont cry, came Ammis voice, then she added to the crowd, Shes just nervous, poor child. She turned to Gohar and Amani. Look after her, I must see to the guests, she said, and she was gone.
Hina saw the ring catch the light and sparkle through a haze of tears as different family members congratulated her. Some held up her ring finger hand and squeezed it with both hands and eyes as if it would relay concealed information. No hidden secrets appeared and soon everyone was finished with their due of greetings and congratulations. The ring still didnt come into focus as the tears swept what was left of her makeup down her face.
Thats it. The pair of hands at her shoulders squeezed her. You two need to take her back upstairs and get her cleaned up, Ray said to Gohar and Amani. They nodded. The walk upstairs was far less of a thrill than the walk downstairs had been. This was mostly because the walk downstairs was an approach to a party where Hina sought after the rest of the happiness about getting engaged. She thought she would find it there, when she got the ring. Now the ring sparkled in floating bits and pieces in her gaze. When Hina reached her own room, dried her eyes and got a good look at the ring, she felt her heart rise with emotion. It was a lovely ring, but it did not bridge the gap like she had thought it would. She was happy about clothes, now wrinkled, jewellery, now returned to its box, makeup, now cleaned up, and her engagement ring, now sparkling on her finger. Yet her reaction to sum it all up was, Thats it? She said as much to Amani and Gohar.
What else do you want? Gohar asked.
Amani glared at Gohar while Hina interrupted all further reactions by slamming her accelerator before she had time to think about it. I wanted to see Sameer! she said. Amani and Gohar were silenced. It was the first time she had taken his name.
To be continued...

Stun and dismay follow Wyoming political espionage revelations – Oil City News

Susan Gore of Cheyenne founded the Wyoming Liberty Group and Republic Free Choice. (Courtesy Wyoming Liberty Group)
June 26, 2021byNick Reynolds, WyoFile
Wealthy conservative donor Susan Gore was a key financier of a years-longeffort to spy on Wyoming Democrats and Republicans, an article published Friday by the New York Times revealed, shining a light on the lengths to which the Gore-Tex heiress and Wyoming Liberty Group founder has gone to influence the states politics.
Thereportalleges Gore helped finance the infiltration of numerous political organizations in the state by a pair of spies tied to the right-wing group Project Veritas. Their targets were varied, according to the investigation, ranging from liberal advocacy group Better Wyoming and advocates of medical marijuana. Democrats and moderate Republicans within the Wyoming Legislature were also singled out, as well as the executive leadership of the Wyoming Democratic Party.
Article continues below...
The activity even reached the office of Republican Gov. Mark Gordon, the New York Times reports.
The Gordon Administration is conservative and transparent, Gordons office said in response to the news. The Governors actions have demonstrated his commitment to fiscal conservatism, life, the Second Amendment, patriotism and always putting Wyoming first. The allegations, if corroborated, of the deceptive behavior of a few politically motivated individuals contained in the New York Times story reflect a sad situation and have no place in Wyoming.
The spies, a man and woman with alleged ties to Blackwater founder Erik Prince, along with Project Veritas, were largely unsuccessful in their efforts, according to several of the victims interviewed by WyoFile. However, observers say the botched incursion into the highest circles of Wyoming politics symbolize Gores escalating role as a puppeteer in Wyomings politics, and her role in the populist rights newfound traction in Cheyenne.
I think this was the logical progression, former Gov. Dave Freudenthal, a Democrat, said. People like Susan arrive with all this outside money that suddenly shows up, funded by people whose ties to the state are usually its tax climate. I dont know if theyre concerned at all about the agricultural community or coal miners, or the schools or any of the things that were traditionally issues that people in Wyoming tried to work on.
Wyoming Liberty Group did not respond to a request for comment.
Shock and confusion
News of the espionage operation stunned many in Wyoming politics, not only for the nature of the operation, but for its chief targets: The Wyoming Democratic Party, the high-powered liberal donor Liz Storer and the progressive advocacy group Better Wyoming and its director, Nate Martin. (Note: The Storer Foundation is a major donor to WyoFile.)
I dont really understand why you would try and infiltrate the Democrats, said Sen. Cale Case (R-Lander), a longtime acquaintance of Gore and a former board member for her advocacy organization, the Wyoming Liberty Group. Theyre not driving the bus in this state, you know.
Others believe it was not the liberal groups activities that drew the interlopers attention, but a false perception of their influence by conservative groups that have grown to believe Wyomings Republican Party is rife with liberal politicians backed by special interest groups.
In 2018, one of the infiltrators, Sophia LaRocca, traveled to Cheyenne to meet with LGBTQ activist Sara Burlingame, then a Democratic candidate for the Wyoming House of Representatives. Burlingame told WyoFile LaRocca pitched her on the concept for an advocacy organization intended to flip Wyoming blue, an idea Burlingame told her was unrealistic.
Burlingame detected red flags about the woman, she said. LaRocca told Burlingame she wanted to spy on Republicans, Burlingame said. LaRocca had few ties to the state and hadnt resided here long. She also lacked a working understanding of Wyomings politics, Burlingame said.
The things that they themselves were guilty of, they projected onto us, and assumed that we would also be guilty of, Burlingame said. But every person they talked to agreed that not only was [spying] unethical, but it was also not strategic.
Living in the least-populated state in the union, you just couldnt afford to do that, Burlingame continued. You burn through all your bridges too rapidly. But I think they had an assumption that behind a closed door, wed drop the mask.
Members of the Wyoming Democratic Party encountered similar red flags, noticing an overeager quality from LaRocca and inconsistent details about her life, communications director Nina Hebert said. While the party offered LaRocca training, Hebert said she and the partys digital director limited her access to party infrastructure, leaving the party largely unexposed to her infiltration attempts.
LaRocca and her partner, Beau Maier, made inroads elsewhere, befriending Better Wyomings Martin and his wife, Wyoming Rep. Karlee Provenza (D-Laramie) through activist trainings. LaRocca even attempted to join Provenzas campaign, the lawmaker said in an interview, only to be rejected.
Through their relationship to Martin and Provenza, Meier and LaRocca became connected to individuals who were part of a multi-partisan coalition to lobby for the legalization of medical cannabis. Gore has been a vocal opponent. Several lawmakers said they believe the effort was intended to gather intelligence on Republican lawmakers who supported legalization.
I now look back on these conversations through a lens of rage, Provenza wrote in a letter to her legislative colleagues sent Friday morning. Rage because I now know that they came into my home under false pretenses to target me and my family. Rage because they attempted to bait me and my husband into saying or doing something shameful so they could use it to hurt us. Rage because they used the same tactics against some of our most honorable colleagues here in the Legislature.
The motivation behind the sting, some believe, stemmed from Gore.
I met with some people from the Liberty Group before running the [cannabis] bill. And what was really fascinating was that almost every person that I talked to who was previously affiliated or with the group all personally took a stance for the decriminalization of medical marijuana, consistent with what I would view as a libertarian position, said Rep. Jared Olsen (R-Cheyenne), the chairman of the Joint Judiciary Committee and the main sponsor of last sessions marijuana legalization bill. But they all said the same thing to me, which was that Susan Gore personally has such an issue with marijuana that the Liberty Group would not be taking a position on it.
Gore traveled to the Capitol to testify against the bill, which ultimately failed.
From Libertarian influencer to espionage
Some, like Freudenthal, believe Gores alleged activity was inevitable.
Gores ties to Wyomingdate back to the mid-1990s, when she first moved to Jackson after more than a decade living in a transcendental meditation community in Iowa. In 2008, Gore entered Wyomings political scene with the founding of the Libertarian-leaning Wyoming Liberty Group.
The mission, according to a former staffer who declined to be named, was smaller government, school choice and low taxes. As the group grew in influence, Freudenthal then in the final years of his second term began to take notice of Gores activities, he said. Freudenthal said he grew concerned over the influence a single, wealthy individual could have on Wyomings politics.
Gore eventually cemented a place amid Wyomings political class. She donated large sums of money over the years to the Wyoming Republican Party, according to campaign finance documents reviewed by WyoFile. After rebooting its image in 2015, the Liberty Groupgained influence. In its growing sway in the Legislature and with the public, Freudenthal said, Gores personal influence grew as well, with candidates eventually tailoring their messages to match her politics.
She played a role in the defeat of House Speaker heir apparent Rosie Bergerin the 2016 primary elections. In 2018, she donated handsomely to Republican gubernatorial candidate Sam Galeotos. Gore was instrumental in a populist wave in the 2020 Republican primaries, donatingtens of thousands of dollarsto hardline conservatives. Many of those candidates went on to win their elections.
What was transpiring was simply a matter of how do we gain power at any cost? Freudenthal said. And unfortunately, theyve been largely successful.
In 2019, then-Wyoming Liberty Group board member Case realized his political philosophy was no longer compatible with Gores, he said, due to his stance on social issues and taxation.
I was always trying to steer the Liberty Group more toward the Libertarian area in issues about economic reform and economic development issues, Case said. But I could never get a lot of traction on the big social issues.
He left the board in 2019.
In recent years, Case has watched Gore funnel thousands of dollars to defeat Democrats as well as conservatives he sees himself aligned with. He wonders when he will be targeted, Case said, particularly as donors like Gore seem bent on purging moderate Republicans in Name Only, or RINOs, from the party ranks.
Paranoia, Rep. Cyrus Western (R-Sheridan), said of the trend. Go figure.
Burlingame considers the rise of Gores influence culminating in espionage inevitable considering current trends, she said.
In a post-Trump world, you have all these hyper-wealthy donors who have been radicalized into a paranoia about the Deep State, Burlingame said. And you also have this small army of con artists who are just out looking for someone to fund them. And theyre a perfect match.

Meacham: Oklahoma has long exhibited the DNA of entrepreneurship – Oklahoman.com

By Scott Meacham| Oklahoman
Of the nearly 3 billion base pairs in the human genome, about 99% are the same in every human being however, it is the sequence of these DNA pairs that makes each of us who we are genetically.
Its like that with entrepreneurial DNA every state has it.
Our country was built by entrepreneurs. Its just that from state to state, our DNA is sequenced differently.
In Oklahoma, our entrepreneurial DNA isnt channeled from one dominant industry or from a particular type of entrepreneur. Our state heroes of innovation have impacted industries across the board from human flight to rock and roll. From changing the way that people drive to changing the way the way people exercise. From making it easier to shop to making it easier to park. From digging ditches to accessing the Internet.
Wiley Post, the aviator with the vision of moving people and freight faster over greater distances, envisioned space travel and, in 1934, invented the pressure suit and advanced innovation in airplane design and fuel forever linking our state to the moon and Mars.
While Wiley Post was pushing the limitations of flight, Oklahoma musician and electric guitar pioneer Bob Dunn was doing some soaring of his own. Dunn carved a place in the history of country swing, during a two-day recording session of 30 one-take cuts, making the first recording of music on an electric guitar, which was his self-engineered electric instrument.
Tulsa state patrol officer Clinton Riggs invented a funny-shaped sign with just the word yield that, without changing laws or the construction of intersections and access ramps, reduced accidents and saved lives.
Nautilus inventor Arthur A. Jones built his first exercise machine while living at the Tulsa YMCA.
Grocer Sylvan Goldman created the shopping cart so that his Oklahoma City customers could buy more on each trip to the grocery store the icon in the upper corner of your Amazon page is the icon of Sylvans legacy.
Another icon invention, Carl Magees parking meter, improved traffic flow and access to parking in Oklahoma City and in all other 49 states.
The Malzahn family, of Ditch Witch fame, gave the world a whole new way to install underground utilities safely and efficiently from gas, electric, and plumbing in the 1950s to telecommunications, CATV, and fiber options today.
Edward Roberts in 1974 invented the first personal computer that attractedPaul Allen and Bill Gates, who then wrote Altair BASIC, the first high-level coding language which became the first product of Microsoft, and the foundation upon which Gates and Allen eventually built the largest software company in the world.
DNA was discovered in 1869 when Swiss biologist Friedrich Miescher found an odd substance that didnt match the proteins he expected in his research of white blood cells. It took another 100+ years, extensive Nobel-caliber research, and groundbreaking advances in computer technology and nuclear medicine to gain the understanding we have today of DNA.
Just as human development is built on the hereditary material of DNA, so is Oklahomas path of innovation and construction of the entrepreneurial DNA of our state. With pride and determination, we need to continue to build on our amazing history of commercializing great ideas that happen here.

How Drones And DNA Can Drill Down To The Past – WVXU
Posted: at 9:50 pm
Earlham College researchers have returned to Iceland with a variety of tech tools to help Icelanders learn more about their Nordic past.
Computer scientist Charlie Peck and biologist Emmett Smith have spent a month at the end of a long peninsula on the east coast of Iceland. Peck explains if you were to drop a stick in the ocean in Norway, the currents would likely bring that stick near the sites where they are working with Icelandic archaeologists.
Peck and Smith are doing what they call 21st century science. Examining the past not only requires archaeologists, but computer scientists using drones to locate where to dig and biologists to identify DNA found in the environment, particularly soil.
The National Geographic Society is funding the project looking at some of the earliest Viking settlements in Iceland in the year 875.
Peck, Smith and the archaeologists want to know what was there and what the people were doing there.
According to Smith, "If I take a soil sample, extract DNA, are we going to find things like particular whole species or fish species that we know they would be consuming? Are we going to see sheep we know they were husbanding? Do we have dogs, horses and cattle which are not in Iceland natively?"
Peck pulls up a picture during our Zoom interview that shows very dark soil. That's the fire pit his drone, guided by computer software, picked up in a giant field.
"You'll fly and pick out features through the change in surface plants that tells you to dig here," he says.
They are also creating a 3D map in a river valley to measure erosion. Climate change is more pronounced in Iceland than in the Midwest and the scientists, when comparing their map to a British-made one in 1942, can determine how nature moves in as the glacier recedes. Microbes in the soil are also useful in determining this.
Smith has dozens of soil samples but moving them across international borders isn't easy. They will use a series of techniques and specialized tools to extract the DNA from the soil samples and store it in tubes. "Then we just come back with a hundred 1.5 ml tubes on frozen vegetables - to keep them cold - and bring those back to Indiana to do the sequencing and the analysis on."
What Have They Found?
Archaeologists discovered a Roman coin which could mean the site was once a trading post.
Smith focuses on the DNA found in soil.
"The henbane and the cranberry in particular indicate that we are seeing ancient DNA that was brought to this location in the form of plant material by the settlers. We've not yet found any human DNA. That was our goal. But every year the technology (and) the analysis tools get better."

Man charged with sexual battery in 14-year-old cold case after entering his DNA into ancestry website – WRAL.com

Tampa, Fla. A Florida man was charged with sexual battery in relation to a cold case that happened in 2007. Police used genetic genealogy testing to find Jared Vaughn, 44, after he submitted his DNA to the genealogy website, FamilyTreeDNA.
In 2007, a woman was assaulted after a man offered to drive her home. At that time, a sexual assault kit was done to try and identify the woman's attacker, officials said.
A crime lab used GEDmatch and FamilyTree's DNA databases to identify Vaughn as a possible suspect, according to authorities. A warrant was obtained and officials gathered a swab from Vaughn, to confirm that his DNA matched what was in the kit.
Police have used DNA from online genealogy sites to solve dozens of cold cases, according to Pew Research.
According to a survey from June, 48% of people said they were OK with DNA testing companies sharing data with police. A third said it was unacceptable, and 18% were unsure.
The website officials say Vaughn used, FamilyTree, only allows law enforcement to use its site to solve homicides, sexual assault or abduction cases.
Experts say that even if someone did not use a genealogy website, their DNA could still be retrieved. Someone's third cousin's DNA profile on FamilyTree could be used by law enforcement in an investigation, according to Nia Bala, a senior attorney at the Policing Project at New York University Law School.
"I click the box and say, yes, law enforcement can use my information. That feels above board," she told Slate. "But what about my third cousin? Do they know that their information essentially is out there as well, because my DNA and their DNA are linked?

Sex, lies and DNA: why many ‘Bothas’ in South Africa have the wrong surname – The Conversation CA
Posted: at 9:50 pm
Headlines about molecular genetics being used to shed new light on old mysteries or even put criminals behind bars have become increasingly more common.
In South Africa DNA is being used to answer important questions about everything from a group of peoples origins to the biological paternity of a child.
But paternity tests arent just applicable to modern cases. Fellow researcher Christoff Erasmus and I considered DNA evidence to understand a divorce case dating back 321 years. The events before and after the divorce case of Maria Kickers had long-term consequences for a family with a surname that, for decades, appeared often among the countrys white leaders. That name is Botha.
The first prime minister of the Union of South Africa, established in 1910, was Louis Botha. There was also PW Botha, the last prime minister to hold that title, and the first to become executive state president of the Republic of South Africa.
Our research shows that Kickers lied in her 1700 divorce case at the Cape of Good Hope. Her lie about the paternity of her children led to a chain of events that affected the Botha lineage, resulting in 38 000 people carrying that name when in fact they were descendants of Ferdinandus Appel.
The genetic evidence, which we gathered using a DNA-based paternity test kit, in combination with the documented testimonies, suggests that Ferdinandus Appel was likely the father of Kickers first son and Frederik Botha the father of the other boys. When we genotyped a random sample of Botha males. We found that almost half of them have the Appel rather than the Botha Y chromosome.
The false paternity claim means that tens of thousands of Bothas more than 76 000 South Africans had this surname in 2013 should in fact be called Appel, a very uncommon name in the country.
If the Kickers divorce case was heard today, DNA evidence would have refuted the lie about paternity outright and the Botha family may well have shattered. Our findings provide another reminder that DNA evidence can clarify events that happened centuries ago, deepening and improving our understanding of history.
One of our sources was a set of records presented by Richard Ball, who is linked to the families at the heart of the divorce case. We also drew information from published genealogical records.
From these we pieced together the following events.
Kickers married Jan Cornelitz in 1683 at the Cape. They had seven children four boys and three girls. Christening records for six of these children have been located; all named Cornelitz as the father. In 1700 Jan filed for divorce, claiming that Maria cheated on him with Ferdinandus Appel as well as a tenant who farmed alongside him, Frederik Botha.
Maria denied any involvement with Ferdinandus Appel, but confessed that Frederik Botha was the biological father of all her children.
In her own defence, she claimed that Jan, her husband, encouraged her relationship with Frederik Botha because Jan was onbequaamd a Dutch word meaning incompetent.
Frederik Botha confirmed before the court Marias claim that all her children were his. While the court did not find Maria to be licentious, they did not give her permission to remarry. As a result, Maria and Frederik Botha had to wait until Jan died, 14 years later, before they could marry. The children then took on the name Botha.
Y chromosomes are inherited like surnames. So, any of Marias sons descendants along an unbroken line of males should carry identical Y chromosomes, bar a few mutations.
With the help of a genealogist we managed to contact and obtain DNA samples from all four of Marias sons along unbroken male lines. In three cases, more than one descendent was found. We genotyped these Bothas Y chromosomes with a kit that is used for paternity tests. The Y chromosomes clearly separated into two groups distinguished by too many mutations to have stemmed from the same Botha ancestor. Within each group, there were a few mutations between individuals, as one would expect for two Y chromosomes with 11 to 19 ancestors between them.
Interestingly, the one group linked to Marias first-born son, whereas the other sons descendants all shared virtually identical genetic profiles. This pattern piqued our curiosity as it suggested that the first sons profile may have stemmed from Ferdinandus Appel.
To test this idea, we genotyped two Appel men: one was a clear match to the first sons descendants. It is 130 times more likely that Marias first son was fathered by Ferdinandus Appel than by a random male that just happened to have the same Y chromosome profile
When we genotyped a random sample of Bothas we found that almost half of them have the Appel rather than the Botha profile. To understand why the first son seems to account for more than a quarter of modern Bothas, we looked at the male descendants as listed in the genealogical records published by the now-closed Genealogical Institute of South Africa.
Just counting the 62 males that were 30 years old or younger in 1780, 45% descended from the first brother while the other three Botha brothers accounted for the remaining 55%. The high number of the first brothers descendants in 1780 could thus explain why so many of our random sample grouped with the Appel profile.
